Project CHESS empowers Latinx and minority students – The Echo

The Center for Hispanic Excellence and Student Success is a grant from the U.S. Department of Education that California Lutheran University received along with Moorpark College. The grant has turned into a program called Project CHESS, which aims to serve historically marginalized, Latinx students who want an opportunity to build leadership skills and connections.

According to the programs website, its goal is to make students feel academically capable and engaged in their classroom, while also focusing on their careers, and serving as a tool to help them connect to their peers and campus.

Part of the grant is for it to become a mentorship, Ruben Alcala, program counselor of Project CHESS said. We provide that mentorship guidance on them, and how to speak to the students, provide empathy, support, [and] check with them throughout the semester.

According to Silvia Neves, director of Project CHESS, there are two main programs, one that works with faculty training and another that works with male students of color. The Faculty Learning Community helps the professional development of faculty members, and their core mission is to learn and develop the Culturally Inclusive & Responsive Curricula for Learning Equity.

Neves said there are currently about 17 faculty members participating in this year-long program. In this part of the program, the faculty learns how to incorporate culturally relevant issues into their classes. This is done through a series of activities that they have to complete, one being revising one of the courses that they teach.

According to Neves, the program now not only focuses on Hispanic students, but also works to serve all students who are underserved, minorities, or first generation.

The other main program that Project CHESS runs is the Male Mentorship program, which Neves said helps connect minority men on campus seeking higher education. Alcala said students who are part of this program have the opportunity to experience a peer mentorship program.

Part of the program, you know, is for them to meet with their counselor two to three times per semester, Alcala said. The students also participate in weekly class sessions, learn about careers, and how to be a better leader.

Project CHESS had a Male Initiative Summer Retreat, where Alcala said participants had the opportunity to get to know each other and create a mentor-mentee relationship. In addition, Alcala said the summer retreat informed participants about how the program works, and how it creates a sense of belonging and brotherhood on campus.

Junior Diego Rosas, who has been a member of the Male Mentorship program for a year and a half, said that he wants to help new students from Cal Lutheran, Oxnard College and Moorpark transition to college from high school.

Rosas had the opportunity to attend this event, and said he had a fun time and learned to be a better leader of all sorts.

Project CHESS started the semester with events for each of their programs. On Tuesday, Sept. 19, the EDUCAL 2023 Annual Symposium was held featuring Tara Yosso, a professor in the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Riverside, as guest speaker.

The Male Mentorship program had their first meeting of the semester on Thursday, Sept. 14. CHESS mentors and mentees from the Oxnard Male Educational Goal Achievement Initiative met virtuallyto connect with each other before they get an opportunity to meet in person later in the semester.

Jordan Peterson Weighs In on Russell Brand Controversy – Newsweek

Conservative influencer Jordan Peterson has called out the BBC's investigation into allegations concerning Russell Brand and labeled it "convenient."

Comedian Brand has come under fire after the sister newspapers The Times and The Sunday Times, as well as Channel 4's Dispatches, released a collaborative expose over the weekend in Britain. It accused the 48-year-old of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse by four women between 2006 and 2013 in the U.K. and U.S.

In a video posted to X, formerly Twitter, Brand said his relationships have been "always consensual" and that he strongly denies "these very serious criminal allegations."

Brand added that he has been transparent about his previous relationships being consensual and wants to continue being transparent. He continued his response by also suggesting the two "mainstream media outlets are making a coordinated attack" against him.

"These allegations pertain to the time when I was working in the mainstream, when I was in the newspapers all the time, when I was in the movies, and as I've written about extensively in my books I was very, very promiscuous," Brand said.

Peterson, known for his outspokenness, has shared a CTV news article on X and captioned it: "It's a bit late for 'Urgently' But it sure is Convenient." The article's headline read: "BBC is 'urgently looking' into issues raised by Brand report." Peterson noted the timeliness of the broadcaster's investigation, seeing as the Channel 4 documentary lists events from as early as 2006.

The program in question, Russell Brand: In Plain Sight: Dispatches, described one instance where Brand assaulted a 16-year-old who was still in school while the comedian was in his early 30s.

Brand's comments about mainstream media outlets making a coordinated attack against him were echoed by similar statements from Peterson's followers.

One replied to his post and wrote: "I'm sure they are being Urgent about it, trying to dig up any dirt they can to stay in business."

Another shared: "They should substitute urgently with frantic. Frantic describes media coverage over issues more accurately, or what they induce in their readers/viewers."

One social-media user hit back at Peterson and posted: "I thought you were all about freedom of speech-which includes journalistic/media freedom."

Several celebrities have shared support for Brand, including former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, social-media influencer Andrew Tate, and X owner Elon Musk.

This is not the first time that the clinical psychologist Peterson has shared his controversial opinions.

He was among the many notable figures encouraging people to boycott the beer brand Bud Light over its collaboration with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. Peterson also criticized Disney CEO Bob Iger and the company's range of LGBTQ+ Pride and transgender flags.

Peterson also misgendered YouTube star Jazz Jennings online when sharing an article about the star.

Bloomingtons annexation attempts lead to legal chess … – Indiana Lawyer

Monroe County Courthouse (IL file photo)

The city of Bloomington is still attempting to expand its borders to the displeasure of a significant amount of the Monroe County residents who stand to be annexed.

Eight lawsuits on the matter are active in the states legal system at the moment. The chess match of motions and appeals could lead to years of litigation, momentum swinging in either direction and residents becoming more befuddled by the ever-growing and exceedingly denseMyCase pages. The court drama boils down to two matters: the constitutionality of a state law and signatures.

A recent development by the city looks to accelerate the annexations of two areas after a decision in early September slowing down the case.

How it started

In 2017, the city of Bloomington announced plans to annex several areas around the perimeter of the city as the city hoped to bring more land into the fold as the city grew. A2021 interaction mapshows the scale of the proposed annexation.

We are one community, and these annexations will make that official, Mayor John Hamilton said in a2017 news release. The property taxes from the annexations will support the neighborhoods and communities that we are committed to serving as we work to provide better and more efficient services to the areas affected.

The annexation was paused after the state intervened and suspended the process, and the Indiana Supreme Court later decided that intervention was unconstitutional. The city continued forward in the second half of 2021.

The Bloomington City Council later narrowed the annexation to seven areas, amounting to about 8,155 acres and around 15,000 residents. The city is still pursuing annexation in Areas 1A, 1B,1C, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

In several town halls and in the public comment of city meetings after the push continued, county residents expressed their outright anger, confusion and discontent at the attempt to annex their area. Many said they are elderly, on fixed incomes and moved outside the city for financial reasons. They said they are unsure if they will have to move again if the influx of taxes proves to be too much.

The city said those county residents will become a part of the city, meaning they will receive more services such as increased policing, sewer service and trash pickup.

It also means those new residents would be subject to city taxes a major reason for pushback. Property owners could see their property taxes increase by an average of $513 per year with a homestead deduction.

Many said that they dont think the life of their neighborhoods and rural roads reflect the city and that there could be difficulties assimilating into city code. They talked about how they dont want the citys services and would prefer to continue contracting their own.

The voracity and the number of county residents opposing the annexation were significant in number resulting in organization and leading to new legal challenges for the city. One leading group isCounty Residents Against Annexation, a not-for-profit, nonpartisan organization that says it is educating about involuntary annexation and fighting against the citys attempts in court. Its a group known for its lawn signs with a cartoon head of lettuce and a bumble bee, symbolizing Let us be.

This may be the largest grassroots movement that Monroe County has ever experienced, CRAA President Margaret Clements said. We have the supermajority of people signed, who were property owners signed against annexation in all of the annexation areas.

Clements said undergoing the cumbersome process, which required notarized petitions, was a testament to how opposed the remonstrators were to annexation. Indiana isone of three stateswhere a town or city can annex land into its borders without consent.

She said one woman in her 80s told her she stood to lose her home if her area was annexed because she would be responsible for an extra $2,000 per year in taxes. Clements brings up that other neighborhoods that are already paying city taxes dont have the services the city promises.

We feel that the people have spoken that they have demonstrated that they do not want to be annexed. Its their right to do that, she said. Their request should be honored.

In aFAQ last updated in April, the city said it has spent about $1.35 million on annexation with $800,000 of it focused on communications, surveying and externally-created fiscal plan development. The city said it would continue to spend more money on the matter if court matters are halted.

In the courts

The city of Bloomington filed a lawsuitin 2022 to challenge a 2019 Indiana law having bearing on the validity of its annexation attempts. The law says to void sewer contacts over 15 years old that allow non-municipal residents to connect to those systems in exchange for not protesting if their area was annexed in the future.

The county auditor, who is the defendant in the case, allowed for petition waivers to be signed and submitted by those covered under such contracts because she was following the current state law, which retroactively nullified those contracts. Why are those waivers important? Those landowners are remonstrators, meaning they oppose the annexation of the land they live on. If enough are received in a 90-day period, the annexation attempt could be squashed or hashed out in court.

If the state law holds up in court, Bloomington will fail to annex those areas. However, if the city wins its case and the law is declared unconstitutional, the annexation of those areas is back on.

The city then said Friday it would drop two areas from its court push in light of the potential years-long constitutional litigation involved and in order to facilitate a more timely resolution of that annexation. The city filed seven lawsuits against the state, one for each area they are attempting to annex; with this move, they are dropping two of those suits.

Uncertainty and delayed annexation is disruptive to all concerned. We have long sought a timely annexation to right-size our city, consistent with state law and despite repeated illegal interventions from the state government, Hamilton said ina Friday news release. Now is the time to get this major component resolved.

Beth Cate, who serves as corporation counsel for the city, told Inside INdiana Business the city plans to move forward with the other five areas, hoping this decision will allow the recently-paused case to continue.

We concluded that the best way to proceed with a timely annexation really its been much delayed, Cate said, but to go ahead and go forward on annexation was to then dismiss the claims.

That decision comes after a development in a different pending lawsuit one filed by CRAA and legally required based on the number of petition signatures collected.

In that case, which is separate but related to the constitutionality question, the court was heading to trial in November, athe outcome of which would be whether the areas would become part of the city. However, CRAA made a motion to hold off on trial until the constitutionality of the annexation is first decided meaning they want to wait until the seven other legal matters all dealing with that subject are settled because it could have an impact on this case. Special Judge Nathan Nikirk, who serves in Lawrence Circuit Court, ruled in their favor on Sept. 5 and handed down a ruling stalling the case.

I dont see that as a win at all, Clements said. In terms of steps toward a right decision, its a necessary component.

What makes Areas 1A and 1B different is the percentage of landowner signatures collected to oppose annexation. In those two areas, they sit in a purgatory of sorts: not enough signatures to outright vote down the annexation attempt and too many to be ignored. They sit between 50% and 65% opposition, meaning the matter heads before a judge to be decided.

The city filed an appeal last Wednesday to the decision with the move to drop the two constitutionality suits directly dealing with the two areas as a reason to move forward with the case. The judge has not yet released a decision.

Whats to come

Depending on whats likely the next decision to come out of either case, the issue could be elongated or expedited, with potentially the former if the judge shoots down the citys appeal.

Bloomingtons next mayor may also throw a wrench in the current, but soon-to-be-former, administrations plans. The de facto candidate is Kerry Thomson, the former CEO ofHabitat for Humanity of Monroe County, whotold the Herald-Timesin March she wants to halt annexation to allow for more communication but could continue the attempt without changing in scope and size.

Thompson won the Democratic primary in May and is on the ballot this November. At this time, there is no Republican challenger.

Clements said she feels strongly about the remonstrators legal challenges. The county is well-represented legally for the constitutionality cases, she said, and the Attorney Generals Office has had good arguments in her opinion.

Her organization, CRAA, is still raising money to pay for legal fees and other costs incurring from their lawsuit to avoid placing that burden on homeowners. Its important they continue to pursue this legal battle, she said.

Its the right to the property owners, Clements said. These residents have said, No, its not in their best interest. They do not want to be annexed, and we would like to have helped them have their voices heard.

However, she said those whose houses and properties are being fought over are stressed. They arent as connected because many are older and were disadvantaged when the pandemic had many key meetings and opportunities for speaking up moved to online venues. Many of them though have kept up with the updates.

Its a very stressful time for them because they see the very affordability of where they live in question, she said.

Inside Ralston College, Jordan Peterson’s Quiet New Weapon In The Culture Wars – Worldcrunch

SAVANNAH Savannah is almost unbelievably beautiful. Fountains splash and babble in the well-tended front gardens of its town houses, which are straight out of Gone with the Wind. As you wander through its historic center, on sidewalks encrusted with oyster shells, past its countless parks, under the shadows cast by palm trees, magnolias and ancient oaks, it's as if you are walking back in time through centuries past.

Hidden behind two magnificent faades here is a sanctuary for people who want to travel even further back: to ancient Europe.

In this city of 147,000 in the U.S. state of Georgia, most locals have no idea what's inside this building. There is no sign either on the wrought-iron gate to the front garden or on the entrance door to suggest that this is the headquarters of a unique experiment. The motto of Ralston College, which was founded around a year ago, is "Free Speech is Life Itself."

The founder and rector is one of the best-known figures in Americas culture wars: Jordan B. Peterson. Since 2016, the Canadian psychologist has made a name for himself with his sharp-worded attacks on feminism and gender politics, becoming public enemy No. 1 for those in the left-wing progressive camp.

Provocation and polemics, Peterson is a master of these arts, with a long list of controversies and 4.6 million followers on X (formerly Twitter), and whose YouTube videos have been viewed by millions. Last year on Twitter he commented on a photo of a plus-size swimsuit model that she was "not beautiful," adding that "no amount of authoritarian tolerance is going to change that."

A few years ago he sparked outrage with a tweet contesting the existence of "white privilege," the idea that all white people, whether they are aware of it or not, have unearned advantages. "There is nothing more racist," he said than this concept. He was even temporarily banned from the platform for an anti-trans tweet.

Over the years, Peterson has become like a red flag to a bull for left-wing progressives. In 2019, the University of Cambridge rescinded an invitation to him to received a visiting fellowship, though he did finally make an appearance in the university two years later. And in 2020, employees at the publisher Penguin Random House tried to stop the publication of his book Beyond Order: 12 More Rules for Life. The company went ahead with the book anyway.

The 60-year-old Peterson, who came to psychology from political science, describes himself as a "classic British liberal." The idea behind his new college is more in line with this self-description than with his penchant for making provocative statements. In Ralston College, where he serves as chancellor, the academic wants to offer a new kind of education and to do that, he is going back to the roots of free thought.

Students on the year-long postgraduate course in humanities spend three months on the Greek island of Samos. The idea is that, in the birthplace of ideological and philosophical debate, they will sharpen their analytical skills and learn to think independently, rather than relying on preconceived opinions and prejudices.

The college seems to be setting itself up as an alternative to what it views as a narrow left-wing progressive school of thought dominating other universities. But it is not loud and aggressive in this, not engaging directly in the culture wars. The college claims that it is neither left-wing nor right-wing but dedicated to freedom.

The long, flowery text on the universitys website does not feature words like cancel culture. There are no attacks on other universities, like those so often seen on Fox News, or in the New York Post and the Wall Street Journal.

These media outlets regularly come out in defense of professors whose jobs are at risk because of statements they made in seminars that were felt to be discriminatory towards certain minorities, or because they are against the use of gender-inclusive language. By contrast, Ralston College is trying to avoid the label of an anti-woke university.

Peterson does teach at the university, and in the first year he also taught seminars at ancient Greek sites. But on a day-to-day basis, the college is run by his compatriot Professor Stephen Blackwood. Much like the college itself, Blackwood eschews publicity. Requests for interview went unanswered for many months. After much persistence, he finally agreed to send written responses to our questions.

What does he think of the criticism in some U.S. media outlets, which compare the colleges advocacy of freedom of expression to current trends in right-wing conservative thought? Blackwood answered evasively: "We value the freedom of the press," he said. "Ralstons mission is more important in 2023 than ever before: offering funded courses in the humanities to create a free atmosphere in which free thought can flourish... Our institution is not affiliated with any political party and we do not receive any state funding."

In recent years, American students have increasingly been favoring more practical courses, as they offer better job prospects. The one-year masters program at Ralston College, by contrast, begins with an intensive course in Ancient and Modern Greek, then explores the Ancient world, the Middle Ages and the Modern Era.

The course costs $60,000, but the colleges homepage says that it offers a number of scholarships funded by donors. In fact the entire university, which currently has 24 students, is financed by private donors.

Anand Mangal is one of the students in the colleges first graduating batch. "I wanted a real change in my life, to leave behind my career as a software engineer and study classical philology," he said. "I liked the fact that Ralston placed great emphasis on studying the Greek language, as well as understanding classical cultures and reading texts in the original. I wanted a thorough understanding of the Western tradition. Ralston promised that, and that is what it gave me in every respect."

The differences between this course and those offered by typical American state colleges could hardly be greater, he said. "The emphasis on classical civilizations, the Middle Ages and the modern era this complete historical overview isnt found anywhere else, said Mangal. "And its even harder to find an intensive language course that allows you to read Ancient Greek and Modern Greek texts by Homer, Plato and John the Evangelist in the original."

As well as these ancient texts, the setting in which he studied was important for him. The summer program in Greece and living in the historical city center of Savannah were huge points of difference."

Looking at photos of students having a discussion with Peterson, sitting in a circle on a shady terrace with the Greek countryside in the background, you can see its appeal to his acolytes. Likewise when you scroll through photos of Peterson delivering lectures in a suit and tie standing in front of ancient Greek ruins.

And even more so when you stroll through the magnificent streets of Savannah in the evening light. "Savannah is one of the most beautiful cities in the world," declares Blackwood. "An ideal place for anyone who is seeking truth, freedom and beauty."

Jordan Peterson Rants About Emasculated Scarecrows Covered In Birds – The Onion

TORONTOWaxing poetic about shifting gender roles in contemporary society, professor and broadcaster Jordan Peterson took to his podcast Monday to rant about the state of emasculated scarecrows who have become covered in birds. The ongoing war on masculinity has spread beyond our cities to more rural areas, where wimpy, pathetic, emasculated scarecrowsonce pillars of intimidation and mightallow themselves to be shamelessly covered in ineffectual birds, the host of The Jordan B. Peterson Podcast said in a 42-minute segment addressing the outbreak of ostentatious weakness among North American men after seeing a photograph online of several crows perched atop a scarecrow in the middle of a field. Tell me, where have the alpha-scarecrows of ancient Rome gone, those who would never let a crow so much as set a talon upon them without putting those foul subordinate creatures in their place? Woke society has castrated this once-great protector and rendered him useless and soft, complete with long, feminine hair and a docile, expressionless face. The cultural Marxists have stripped male scarecrows of their inalienable rights as a dominant male entity to lead and be served, and I, for one, am sickened. At press time, a red-faced and teary-eyed Peterson revealed that his former colleagues at the University of Toronto had stripped him of his tenure status when he refused to let them cover him with crows.

Conspiracy Theorists Are Rushing To Defend Russell Brand Over … – VICE

PHOTO: Jon Kopaloff/Getty Images for Friendly House

Conspiracy theorists around the world have leapt to the defence of Russell Brand in the wake of serious sexual assault allegations against the comedian, claiming he is being targeted by the New World Order for challenging the mainstream narrative on COVID and other issues.

The 48 year old, who in recent years has rebranded himself as a wellness influencer who delivers conspiracist musings to an audience of millions online, was the first to attempt to frame the allegations against him as being the result of a serious and concerted agenda to silence him.

The investigation published on Saturday accused Brand of sexually assaulting four women, including a 16-year-old girl, between 2006 and 2013. Brand denied the allegations and said all relationships he had at the time were absolutely always consensual.

Even before UK news outlets The Times, The Sunday Times and Channel 4 published their joint investigation, Brand pre-emptively posted a video refuting the allegations and painting himself as the victim of a coordinated attack from the mainstream media.

Its been clear to me, or at least it feels to me, like theres a serious and concerted agenda to control these kind of spaces, and these kind of voices, and I mean my voice along with your voice, he said.

That line was soon echoed by a raft of high-profile conspiracy-theorist and right-wing figures, who argued that Brand had been cancelled by the establishment for challenging orthodox liberal narratives on issues like the pandemic, Russias invasion of Ukraine and other culture-war talking points. Brands video posts on Rumble have titles like A Great Reset Will Happen and Your Blood is Being Sucked and Sold to China, while another questions whether a global move towards digital currencies could lead to a social credit system to control your every move.

US conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, host of the website Infowars and infamous for a sustained campaign in which he called the Sandy Hook school shooting a hoax, posted in support of Brand, who he said he knew personally.

No one ever accused him for the last 15 years of assault because they say hes a big sweetheart, Jones said in a video.

And now because he comes out against Big Pharma, he comes out against the globalists, he comes out against the New World Order, suddenly the allegations are happening to him.

The misogynist influencer Andrew Tate was quick to draw comparisons between Brands situation and his own. Tate is facing human trafficking and rape charges in Romania, which he has emphatically denied. He has framed the charges as part of a plot against him by the establishment.

He tweeted to Brands account Welcome to the club, along with a meme showing a knight and the text: On my way to fight the crazy bitch allegations.

He then retweeted posts from other users circulating conspiracy theories around the Brand allegations, suggesting that Brand was being smeared by the liberal media establishment. They claimed he was being treated like other right-wing figures such as Donald Trump or Joe Rogan for having challenged prevailing narratives, or supposedly to distract from other matters such as revealing any VIPs who may have been involved in child sex abuse orchestrated by Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in jail after being charged with sex trafficking.

Russell Brand and Andrew Tate are supposed to distract you from this, read one post that Tate shared, showing Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell alongside former US president Bill Clinton. Evil elite pedos. Dont fall for it.

Right-wing influencer Ian Miles Cheong also leapt to Brands defence, comparing him to other heroes of the right who had supposedly been cancelled for speaking the truth.

They came for Tucker Carlson because he spoke the truth. They came for Joe Rogan because he had conversations about the truth. They came for Jordan Peterson because he challenged their lies, he wrote. Now theyve come for Russell Brand because hes showing others that its possible to engage with the truth by asking questions.

Tate retweeted another right-wing influencer, the poster known as @catturd2, who wrote that [w]hen you speak truth to power, and your voice gets big enough to change hearts and minds, this is what the New World Order does to you . Julian Assange prisoner for years. President Trump facing 800 years in prison. Andrew Tate jailed without charges for months. Russell Brand here we go again.

These people are pure evil.

Even the worlds richest man, Elon Musk, suggested that there was an ulterior motive to media outlets publishing the allegations, responding to Brands video statement: Of course. They dont like competition.

He replied to another tweet defending Brand: No more canceling. Enough is enough.

Right-wing, conspiracist media figures in both the US and UK also chimed in in Brands defence, with Tucker Carlson suggesting that the allegations were motivated by Brands views on issues such as drug companies and the war in Ukraine, and Beverley Turner, a host on right-wing UK news channel GB News, replying to Brands video post by hailing him as a hero.

Establishment media don't know what to do with the fact that you have 6 million subscribers & generate autonomous, knowing and original content, she wrote.

Keep going. This proves you are winning. You're a hero.

But more suspicious minds within the right-wing conspiracist scene were wary of embracing Brand as a martyr. While discussion of the allegations were widespread on Telegram, the favoured platform for far-right conspiracy theorists, some users were critical of the rush by right-wingers to defend Brand.

Mark Collett, founder of the white nationalist group Patriotic Alternative, lamented the push by both the truther community and mainstream conservative pundits to embrace Brand, saying that the comedian had a track record of pushing all kinds of vile and degenerate madness. Collett also highlighted the supposed sins of having cross dressed, and having dated Jemima Khan, a member of Goldsmith family, known for their prominent role in banking and finance.

But all of that is waved away as if it never happened by needy so-called truthers and conservatives because he has recently made a couple of comments about Big Pharma, he wrote.

Others on Telegram suggested the scandal engulfing the comedian-turned-influencer was itself a kind of psy-op to distract the masses from the real issues.

It serves as a distraction for the brainwashed, wrote one user on a UK forum for sovereign citizens. Hes controlled opposition, thats for sure.

Jordan Peterson Sparks Debate On How Bitcoin Can Solve Major Banking Problem – NewsBTC

The flagship cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, was created with the goal of disrupting the traditional financial system. In support of this, Best-selling Author and Clinical Psychologist Jordan Peterson has suggested that customers should abandon the banking system and probably adopt Bitcoin.

Peterson was making this suggestion in response to a news report that Macquarie Bank, Australias fifth largest bank, was planning to transition to a digital-only banking system by November 2024. In line with this, the bank will begin phasing out cash, cheque, and phone payment services as part of its offerings.

The psychologist quoted the report and stated, Maybe its time to scrap Banks, and further quizzed, Could Bitcoin fix this?

For one, Macquarie Banks decision has been widely criticized as it potentially excludes certain customer groups. Furthermore, this move also highlights one of the problems that cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin aim to solve by giving customers more control over their money.

It is believed that these financial institutions shouldnt be able to have so much control over peoples finances and decide how they spend their money as these banks could easily implement policies that do not favor or cause difficulties to certain customer groups.

Additionally, Macquarie, in a statement, described digital transactions as being a safer, quicker, and more convenient way to bank. However, crypto advocates beg to differ as, in response to Petersons tweet, some responded that networks like the Bitcoin Lightning Network, XRP Ledger, and Bitcoin Cash are a better alternative than the banks digital systems.

Many, including Republican presidential candidate Aaron Day, seem to be against the idea of Bitcoin replacing banks. In response to Petersons tweet, Day stated that the traditional banking system could do between 50,000 and 100,000 transactions per second (TPS), unlike Bitcoin, which has a TPS of seven. He also elaborated that the CBDC pilot in the US can do 1.7 million TPS.

Following this, crypto supporters quickly responded that the Bitcoin Lightning Network helps to solve this problem as it boasts a TPS of up to 1 million, making it faster than the traditional banking system, which Day argues for.

The network is able to provide a quicker alternative while enjoying the security that the Bitcoin blockchain provides. Blockchain technology (which cryptocurrencies run on) is said to be more secure and transparent than the traditional banking system.

Meanwhile, many in the Bitcoin community seemed to be happy about the idea of Jordan Peterson mentioning the foremost cryptocurrency on his platform, as that could suggest that Bitcoin is about to gain a major proponent. The Canadian psychologist boasts a huge follower base with 4.6 million followers on his X (formerly Twitter) platform.

Russell Brands wonderland: the online soapbox where the star pushes his free speech – The Guardian

Russell Brand

Amid the relentless conspiracy theorising on the comedians YouTube and Rumble video channels, there have been fleeting pauses for self-reflection

Tue 19 Sep 2023 01.00 EDT

In a video posted last year, sandwiched between episodes on what the Covid vaccine provider Pfizer isnt telling you and the bezerker qualities of Donald Trump as a consensus-breaking force familiar themes for the millions of subscribers to Russell Brands Stay Free channel there was a change of tone.

The subject of the daily episode was not the usual diet of conspiracy theories, critiques of the mainstream media and whimsical football chat but instead the US libel trial involving Johnny Depp and Amber Heard in which the veracity of the allegations of domestic abuse made by the Hollywood stars former wife were being examined.

Depp, who was found to have indeed beaten his wife in a UK court appearance relating to a similar claim of defamation, was said by Brand to have come across well in the court in Virginia where Heards evidence was rejected by a jury. Then Brand had a moment of introspection.

He said: Human beings are flawed and fallible and usually, personally speaking, again, from personal experience, in the places where there is the most intimacy, Im at most risk in some ways of behaving in a way thats ugly always, of course, within the confines of the law, I would hope, but in ways that are not in alignment with the kind of moral codes that I like to aspire to live by at least.

Speaking further from the converted pub in an Oxfordshire village that is his studio, Brand confessed to not always handling himself well in failing relationships, admitting to some unspecified shameful behaviour. However, I wouldnt like to have that be turned into entertainment, he said of the media dissection of the Depp-Heard relationship. It was a forlorn hope.

Last Friday, it was through his channel on the video platform Rumble that Brand first commented on the rumours that the Sunday Times and the Channel 4 Dispatches programme were about to publish very, very serious criminal allegations. They would include rape.

He has denied the allegations.

Since then, Brand has performed a comedy routine for 2,000 people at the Troubadour Wembley Park theatre during which he told the audience that there are obviously some things that I absolutely cannot talk about. Further scheduled gigs have been postponed and he has not filmed another video for the 6.5 million subscribers. It is a rare break.

Brand, 48, first launched his internet career back in 2014 with his own YouTube series, entitled The Trews: True News with Russell Brand. There were more than 200 episodes in the first year but the sharp spike in appetite for his views came after he started to suggest that the response of governments to the Covid pandemic along with that of the pharmaceutical industry and the mainstream media were part of a conspiracy.

If the response to the pandemic was about saving lives why did nothing happen until it affected the stock market? he asked in one video.

Those views have only hardened over time, his videos suggest, and only the first 15 minutes of them are now shown on YouTube due to regulations. Google has said it will remove content on the site that is found to be spreading medical misinformation.

YouTube viewers have instead been invited by Brand to switch over and enjoy free speech on Rumble. Being on YouTube we have to be cautious in what we say, he recently warned his supporters. On Tuesday, Youtube said they were now stopping Brand from being able to earn any money through his channel for violating our Creator Responsibility policy. Advertisers pay YouTube to show their adverts before, during or after videos.

There has been a troupe of regular Brand targets including Bill Gates, whose motives for investing in laboratory-grown meat have most recently been questioned, along with Barack Obama for falling under the Geneva conventions definition of a war criminal. Ukraines president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, has also been criticised for his apparent part in allowing his country to be turned into a colony for US corporate interests.

In the last year, Brand has been joined by a sidekick, Gareth Roy, a producer and stand-up director who has made content for C4, Sky, BBC Three, MTV, YouTube, FX and Comedy Central, according to his LinkedIn account. Roy echoes Brands views on all things conspiratorial and tees up his monologues. But the videos are carefully worded. Accusatory questions are more often asked rather than positions asserted, with the viewers, called awakening wonders, asked to join up the dots themselves.

There are celebrity guests such as the academic Jordan Peterson and former Fox news presenter Tucker Carlson, for whom Brand appears to have growing respect. Tucker has become an anti-establishment figure now, hasnt he? Brand said recently. He now exists in the same space as we do in independent media.

And all of it is interspersed with adverts voiced by Brand himself for a range of products from stickers to food supplements, along with repeated requests for those watching to become $60-a-year subscribers. Some of the shows revenues are said to go to Brands Stay Free Foundation, which aims to support addicts through recovery but is too new to have filed a set of accounts. One of the charities the foundation supports, Trevi, which helps women affected by substance misuse with children in their care, has already ended its association.

Does the ‘carnivore diet’ work? Here’s what eating only meat does to your body – Toronto Star

Yes, argue adherents of the carnivore diet, a controversial food trend that sees its members cut all food out of their diets that didnt come from an animal. But does the practice live up to the hype?

The diet was widely popularized years ago by American orthopedic surgeon, author and podcast host Dr. Shawn Baker. Later, voices like Joe Rogan and Jordan Peterson endorsed the practice, taking it mainstream. Today, the community boasts hundreds of thousands of practitioners, with over 50,000 members in the subreddit r/carnivore alone.

Yet nutritionists tell the Star they have doubts about the diets efficacy especially if it isnt followed exactly right, which can lead to nutrient deficiencies. As human-driven climate change continues to advance, critics also point to the immense carbon footprint left by the meat industry, which contributes 14.5 per cent of humanitys total greenhouse gas emissions.

Heres what experts say are the health impacts of a meat-only diet.

As the name suggests, the carnivore diet is a highly restrictive regimen that sees practitioners only consume animal products, namely meat and organs. Some people eat eggs, butter or other dairy products, but any fruits, vegetables, grains or other food categories are strictly forbidden.

They literally eat no vegetables, no fruit, said Kyle Byron, a nutrition coach and personal trainer who owns Torontos Kyle Byron Nutrition. No nuts, no seeds, no processed carbs, no grains. Just meat and organs.

Organs especially those of grass-fed animals are a key part of the diet, supplying some of the nutrients practitioners miss out on by skipping all other food groups, Byron elaborated. Its partly why the practice is so hard to follow, especially for those not taking supplements.

Kinga Balogh, a registered dietitian and health coach at Torontos JM Nutrition, added that all takeout and convenience foods are also off the menu. Carnivore purists might even eliminate all seasonings except salt, because (salt) is the only condiment that is not plant based, Balogh said, while avoiding tea and coffee for the same reason.

Enjoy a glass of wine with your steak? Think again, as a carnivore does not consume foods or beverages from plant sources, she said. Want to blow out your birthday candles on a delicious dessert? Think twice and see if your filet mignon can hold the candles.

Although adherents to the diet claim it can help you lose weight, improve mood, better regulate blood sugar and other benefits, nutritionists say studies have yet to show any evidence.

To date, no scientific studies back (the carnivore diets) purported benefits, said Alia Virjee, a registered dietitian and owner of Toronto Tangible Wellness. As health-care professionals, we cannot recommend dietary strategies lacking scientific backing.

Studies that looked into the diets of people who live in Arctic regions who subsist mainly on meat and blubber initially touted their health benefits. However, more recent studies found the traditional Inuit diet might not be as healthy as believed.

Virjee said some carnivores might experience a brief period of rapid weight loss upon starting the diet due to major changes in their eating habits. Yet, as with virtually all fad diets, most participants may find themselves regaining their shed pounds over time.

I firmly believe and there is lots of credible research to suggest that humans require variety and balance, Virjee said, adding she cant see herself ever recommending the diet to a client.

Thats not to discount all its reported benefits, however: our bodies all react to diets in their own ways, Byron said. While he is personally skeptical of the carnivore diet, he encourages people to try things as it might yield different results for different people.

Just be sure to do your research and ensure youre getting all the nutrients you need, or bad things can happen.

As one might expect, carnivores face a whole host of nutrient deficiencies from cutting out all other food groups. Two of the biggest issues are a lack of fibre and carbohydrates, Virjee explained, which can lead to constipation, a common side effect of the diet. Fibre also helps keep our immune systems strong by diversifying our gut microbiome, which can help with digestion.

Meanwhile, carbohydrates are the primary source of fuel in our body, where our brain and muscles rely on them for energy and to function optimally, Balogh said.

This also means carnivores wont get the antioxidants present in carb-rich foods, which help fight chemicals called free radicals in the body, Balogh added. If left unchecked, these molecules could contribute to cancer down the line.

According to Health Canada, adults should get 65 per cent of their nutrients from carbohydrates, 10 to 35 per cent from protein, and 20 to 35 per cent from fat. By contrast, carbs make up zero to five per cent of a strict carnivore diet, Balogh said, while 20 to 35 per cent of nutrients come from protein and 50 to 75 per cent from fat.

Byron said carnivores commonly have mineral and vitamin deficiencies, like vitamin D or C. Vitamin D is important in bone health, while you might recall a lack of vitamin C led sailors to develop scurvy.

While supplements can help make up for some of these losses, Balogh said these are often less nutritious than whole foods, which possess various other nutrients often missed by supplements.

According to Balogh, the carnivore diet might prove dangerous to certain people with prior health conditions. These include:
