Wyse to Launch Client Infrastructure Management Software as a Service, Enabling Simple and Secure Management of Any …

SAN JOSE, CA and BARCELONA, SPAIN--(Marketwire -02/27/12)- Wyse Technology, the global leader in cloud client computing, today announced an initiative to enable IT organizations to easily and confidently embrace the consumerization of IT with a holistic cloud-based device management service. This initiative, codenamed Project Stratus, provides IT administrators with an intelligent and dynamic cloud-based console to securely manage and enable corporate access to any device, including smartphones, tablets, thin clients, zero clients, and PC's -- regardless if that device is owned by the company or by the individual. Project Stratus is a secure, highly-available and scalable cloud-based service, allowing customers to have a fully deployed and configured environment in less than an hour, and even scale from tens to thousands of devices overnight, all without any complex or expensive on-premise servers to maintain and upgrade.

Project Stratus delivers a unified console that goes beyond standard device management solutions by providing a complete view of the IT infrastructure serving end-users. The console provides visibility not only into their devices, but also into all the IT assets accessed by these devices. This added visibility into the relationship between users, devices, and the IT ecosystem -- combined with a world-class analytics engine -- provides invaluable insight into usage models, trends, and helps to identify areas of investment to more securely and effectively provide corporate services to end users.

The first step in Project Stratus began with Wyse's acquisition of Trellia in November 2011. Trellia's expertise in mobile device management (MDM) is now being combined with Wyse's management expertise across a wide variety of end-point devices to deliver a truly breakthrough SaaS offering. Already, customers seeking to deploy a comprehensive cloud-based management solution for consumer devices such as iOS and Android can take advantage of Wyse's current Enterprise Cloud Hosted service named Wyse EMM (Enterprise Mobility Management). For more information on about Wyse EMM, please visit, http://www.wyse.com/products/software/management/EMM

In the report from Forrester Research entitled "Info Workers Using Mobile And Personal Devices For Work Will Transform Personal Tech Markets," (February 22, 2012) analysts examined the issues and habits of device users.

"The role of info workers choosing their own devices will quickly come out of the shadows as more employees adopt this behavior. The role of employees in tech selection is growing in part because of the growing use of mobile devices beyond just PCs. Inspired by the empowerment of choosing their own mobile devices, employees are increasingly choosing and using the PC devices they use for work as well," according to the report.

"Enabling IT organizations to provide users with simple, secure access to corporate assets has always been a core focus at Wyse; which is why customers trust us to manage over 200 million users daily from our cloud clients," said Hector Angulo, Product Manager at Wyse. "Project Stratus extends this secure provisioning and management to all the new devices flooding the enterprise, providing for the first time a one-stop shop for device management in the Post-PC era."

"Between IT challenges around employee-owned end point devices, advances in mobile computing, and the vast proliferation of thin, zero, cloud clients, PCs and more, the biggest challenge to IT today has to do with management," according to Bob O'Donnell, Vice President at IDC.

Key features of Project Stratus include:

Simplicity. Streamlined, discoverable interface with user-centric policy management to help automate user access regardless of what device they are using, including easy exception handling -- natural and intuitive management for today's dynamic IT world TCO Reduction. Cloud-hosted service eliminates costly on-premise servers and enables instant deployment and scaling -- drastically reduces the total cost of operations and ownership Real-time Analytics. Dynamic and instantly personalized data feeds always present admins with the most relevant insight to help expedite the task at hand -- powerful analytic engine exposes most important activities, events, and trends Actionable. Pro-active alerts notify admins about compliance violations and other potential issues with option to take contextual actions in-place (i.e. warn user, block, ignore) or automate future mitigation (i.e. automatically approve roaming exception request for all members of 'executive' group) Time-Saving. User and device pages that provide instant visibility into any managed asset, including who is using the device, what it is interacting with, and any potential performance or security issues in order to expedite issue identification and resolution Unified Console. Visibility and management of all devices used in the enterprise, with support for smartphones, tablets, thin clients, and zero clients -- one-stop shop for all devices, no more hassle of dealing with many consoles Security. Dell unveils new servers, says not a PC company

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Dell Inc launched a new line of servers for enterprise customers, boosting its corporate business unit and shifting its focus further away from consumers, who are increasingly choosing such devices as Apple Inc's iPad.

Chief Executive Michael Dell said his namesake company is no longer a personal computer company and has transformed itself into a business that sells services and products to corporations, a lucrative market that he said is worth $3 trillion.

Corporations have grappled with ever-smaller IT budgets as slow economic growth curtails spending. But many experts say tech spending will swell over the long term as companies upgrade systems, connect to the Internet cloud, or begin to make better use of user data.

Dell's so-called enterprise business has doubled in the past five to six years and now represents half of the company's profit, he added.

"It's not really a PC company; it's an end-to-end IT company," Michael Dell said at an event in San Francisco where the company launched a new line of PowerEdge servers aimed at businesses with remote computing needs.

The company's founder said the growth of Dell's enterprise business validates its strategy of diversifying away from personal computers as a new crop of devices such as the iPad captivates buyers.

Michael Dell said he wants to focus on the enterprise and public markets, rather than a drastically smaller $250 billion consumer market.

"The consumer market is not particularly healthy and the enterprise business is much more so," Dave Johnson, Dell's strategy chief, told Reuters.

Dell's storage and networking revenue grew 10 percent last year, while sales of its desktop PCs fell 4 percent.

The world's No. 3 personal computer maker fell short of Wall Street's estimate for fourth-quarter earnings, hurt by weakness in U.S. public spending and the lingering impact of the Thailand flood on its product mix. It has also forecast weak sales for the current quarter.

Sales at Hewlett Packard's, the No. 1 PC seller, declined 15 percent in its fiscal first quarter.

Round Rock, Texas-based Dell has been waging an uphill battle to diversify its revenue base from PCs to become a larger player in the data center equipment market and IT services. It faces stiff competition in those markets from the likes of International Business Machines Corp and HP.

To help that effort, it has been acquiring companies, including Force 10 Networks and Compellent Technologies, to boost its enterprise-related products and services.

Secure Cloud Computing Software manages IT resources.

New dashboard capability gives administrators a single, integrated view to better manage their cloud resources and control costs

BLUE BELL, Pa., -- Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) today announced release 2.1 of its Unisys Secure Private Cloud Solution. The new release addresses a key challenge facing IT management: lowering IT costs by managing resources more efficiently.

Release 2.1 includes a new dashboard capability that gives administrators a single, integrated view of all cloud resources: servers, networks, storage systems and more. They can use the dashboard to determine the operational status of specific resources and take necessary actions to respond to business changes in real time, deliver performance mandated by service-level agreements (SLAs) and increase infrastructure productivity.

For example, if the administrator of a retail website knows that a new promotion has increased hits on the customer-service application beyond expected levels, they can, within minutes, use the dashboard to increase network bandwidth, find idle servers and switch them to productive use and create new virtual machines on active servers to handle the temporary workload. When the requirement has passed, the administrator can decommission the added resources to eliminate associated overhead costs.

"This advanced dashboard capability gives organizations the visibility they need to better manage their cloud resources and expenditures," said Rod Sapp, vice president, Data Center Transformation and Outsourcing Products and Technology, Unisys. "As the adage goes, you can't manage what you don't measure. With Unisys Secure Private Cloud Solution, organizations can finally get their arms around all of their cloud investments so that they can realize the benefits in responsiveness and cost savings that cloud computing offers."

The Unisys Secure Private Cloud Solution streamlines provisioning and management of critical IT resources, helping clients reduce provisioning time from weeks to minutes.

Based on client feedback as well as Unisys' own experience in running its entire engineering development operation thorough this solution, Unisys estimates that the Secure Private Cloud Solution can yield a typical organization operational and cost avoidance savings of up to $6 million over five years. (1)

The enhanced dashboard capability in release 2.1 complements key features in release 2 of the Unisys Secure Private Cloud Solution, announced in November 2011:

-- An open software framework affording greater flexibility to integrate with widely used IT service management systems such as BMC Remedy and IBM Tivoli.

-- Software-based single-pane management. Separated from the physical platform and linked to the administrative console only by an IP connection, this facility enables IT administrators to connect to the management interface through a browser on an iPad or any other mobile device.

-- Role-based single sign-on security for simplified access to cloud operations.

-- Tight integration with Unisys remote infrastructure management services, which monitor and correlate events across all segments of a managed infrastructure to orchestrate preventive and pre-emptive action against potential IT faults.

-- Enhanced automated orchestration capabilities that enable faster policy-based allocation of resources to meet fluctuating business demands.

-- Metering that tracks resource usage and allocates charges back to business organizations, with each group paying only for the resources it uses.

ScaleXtreme Automates Cloud-Based Patch Management For Virtual, Physical Servers

Channel: Virtualization, Private Cloud, Cloud Computing, Security, Public Cloud, Data Center

ScaleXtreme, a provider of server automation products, has launched a cloud-based patch management automation product for use in public cloud, virtual and physical servers. The tool does automatic scanning and remediation for patch management, says Nand Mulchandani, CEO and co-founder of ScaleXtreme.

"You really don't have a lot of options for managing your Windows and Linux servers,'' he says. While patch management has been around for a long time, Mulchandani says it is difficult to do on a public cloud machine "in a clean, uniform way across multiple operating systems."

What is unique about ScaleXtreme's offering is the fact that it is designed for cloud environments and "at the same time treating the existing data center environments all with one tool,'' notes Peter Christy, co-founder and principal analyst at Internet Research Group. "I would guess that the fact that [ScaleXtreme] lets you manage multiple data center environments with one system is more valuable than the cost of changing a system you might already be using," assuming the latest version works the same as the previous one, he adds.

The system management task today is quite different from system management 10 years ago because of the introduction of virtualization and the impact it has had on data center IT, Christy says. Because it is using a SaaS application delivery model, ScaleXtreme provides much simpler deployment, support and cost, he says.

Interest in private cloud operations that can work in conjunction with the public cloud grew markedly in 2011, according to the second InformationWeek Reports State of Cloud Computing Survey. Microsoft and VMware in particular have turned their attention to enabling the higher-level services included in the build out of private cloud environments--making use of their virtualization products as a set of core cloud software that runs inside a company's own data center. Mulchandani says their customers have cited security as the top reason they're not moving from a private cloud to a public cloud, but that they can now set up on-demand or scheduled scans both on their enterprise physical servers and virtual machines, as well as public cloud servers. ScaleXtreme supports Windows and Linux servers, and patches can be deployed on the fly or on a specific schedule, he says.

"You as the customer really want the advantages of being able to buy capacity from different locations with a single view of all of your systems,'' Mulchandani says. "You want to log in and see all your servers, whether they are on Amazon or Rackspace, and have them show up in a single location and be able to manage them in the exact same way,'' he says. The company is able to do this, he maintains, with the platform technology it has built to manage servers through firewalls without having to open a single inbound port.

Traditional systems management products operating outside of the corporate firewall or on the cloud require that a port be opened to allow the product to communicate with the server. "Our product inverts that model, so instead of the product communicating to the server, the server communicates to the product,'' says Mulchandani, through the use of a software agent that communicates out to the cloud. That gives IT the ability to manage servers sitting behind the firewall or in the public cloud just as easily, he says, and both look the same.

Other competitors in the general management space include CA, BMC and IBM/Tivoli, among others, says Christy.

ScaleXtreme offers free patch scanning for public cloud machines, virtual servers and physical servers to select customers through its free ScaleXtreme Xpress product. Its Xpert product costs $15 per month.

The operation is part of the company’s Integrated Network Solutions segment.

“There is a large and growing market for cyber security and cloud-enabled solutions, and Harris is committed to continuing to be a significant player in this area,” said William M. Brown, president and chief executive officer. “These actions allow us to refocus our capital and efforts on the secure, cost-effective communications and IT solutions that our customers are demanding.”

The company expects to incur an after-tax charge of $70 million to $80 million during fiscal 2012 as a result of these actions.

Harris plans to stop offering remote cloud hosting

NEW YORK (AP) -- Harris Corp. plans to stop providing some cloud-computing hosting services and sell a Harrisburg, Va., data center facility, saying Monday that its government and commercial customers prefer keeping sensitive information themselves rather than storing it remotely.

The "cloud" offers customers computing power, software applications and data storage on servers located outside of their own properties.

Harris provides IT and communications services to the government and other customers. It said it still wants to provide customers advanced cyber security and cloud-enabled software applications and services.

The move means Harris will be ending its Cyber Integrated Solutions operations and will likely record a $70 million to $80 million after-tax charge in fiscal 2012.

Harris also said Monday that it is boosting its quarterly dividend by 18 percent to 33 cents per share from 28 cents per share. The dividend will be paid on March 16 to shareholders of record on March 7.

Shares of the company, based in Melbourne, Fla., rose 26 cents to $43.37 in afternoon trading.
