Oracle sets sights on an all-Oracle cloud

Summary: CEO Larry Ellison has unveiled an ambitious cloud strategy built around an all-Oracle IT stack, but has failed to give evidence at Oracle Open World of performance or cost advantages over rivals.

Oracle wants to build a cathedral of cloud services, while all around it its competitors are building slums.

The company's chief executive, Larry Ellison, outlined the database giant's cloud strategyon Sunday at Oracle OpenWorld. His vision was that Oracle customers will use both a public and private cloud entirely based around the company's software and hardware.

"We're adding a new line of business, cloud computing, to our traditional business of selling software and selling hardware... and we're going to sell it on the fastest computers in the world," Ellison said on Sunday. "It makes a lot of sense for Oracle to be in all three tiers of cloud services."

Those three tiers are software-as-a-service (SaaS), platform-as-a-service (PaaS) and infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS). In other words, Oracle wants to be the Salesforce, Heroku, and Google, Microsoft, Amazon and HP of the cloud.

"The infrastructure that we're offering isn't conventional infrastructure," Ellison said. "What we're offering is our OS, our VM, compute services and storage services on the fastest, most reliable machines in the world on our engineered systems all networked together with a modern Infiniband network."

In other words, Oracle's cloud is one that is built with its overarching 'software and hardware, engineered together' philosophy.

Different approach

The approach differs markedly from that of Oracle's competitors: Amazon Web Services (AWS) is known to use vast amounts of low-cost commodity servers to run its cloud, while Google has gone as far as to design and build its own stripped-down servers. Neither of these companies sell on-premise hardware.

HP, which via its significant hardware business is perhaps the closest company to Oracle in terms of form, has opted for a more open cloud strategy. Though the IT giant sells cloud-specific hardware, it uses the open-source OpenStack cloud software for its own cloud effort.

Oracle bulks up cloud computing services

Oracle Chief Executive Officer Larry Ellison unveiled a high-end server with more memory Sunday evening, and the tech company updated its flagship database to compete against SAP in meeting businesses' growing information needs.

Oracle will also sell computing power and storage, applications software and its database as a cloud service businesses can rent instead of buying outright, Ellison said in the opening address of the company's OpenWorld conference at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

"You can access all of these services across the network," said Ellison. "It makes sense for Oracle to be in all three tiers of cloud services."

Oracle, the world's largest supplier of database software, is jockeying with SAP, the top business applications maker, as well as Salesforce.com and Workday, for the edge in cloud computing for businesses. Its revamped 12c database, the first new version in five years, will let customers move their computing jobs from data centers to the Internet, Ellison said.

The company's addition to its Exadata line of servers, called the X3, will be able to house as much as 22 terabytes of flash computer memory and four terabytes of DRAM in a single server rack to greatly speed up business reports. That's four times as much flash storage per rack than a previous version of Exadata, Ellison said.

"If you thought the old Exadatas were fast, you ain't seen nothing yet," said Ellison.

He said Oracle is "ideally positioned" to deliver many components of hardware and software - including its database, application-connecting middleware and computer systems - as a cloud computing service delivered entirely through the Internet, or with some equipment sitting in customers' data centers.

"Oracle should be in this business," said Rick Sherlund, an analyst at Nomura Holdings Inc., who recommends buying the shares. "Oracle has to reposition for the cloud."

Ellison has said the 12c database will let Oracle serve multiple companies' data-processing needs from the same information storehouse and will arrive by early next year. The company's Exadata and Exalogic systems, plus its database, Java development tools and social-media analysis software, can be delivered to businesses as a service Oracle manages over the Internet, co-president Mark Hurd said in an interview last week.

International Business Machines, Microsoft and VMware are also vying to supply more of the platform software that can help companies move to cloud computing. SAP's High Performance Analytical Appliance uses hardware from IBM, Hewlett-Packard and others to store data in computer memory for faster analysis.

Oracle to launch cloud service to rival Amazon

Oracle announced Sunday the launch of a new cloud computing service to rival Amazon.

Oracle chief executive officer Larry Ellison unveiled plans for an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) called Oracle Public Cloud at the OpenWorld conference in San Francisco. The service will have two versions: public and private.

Oracle Public Cloud can be compared to Amazon Web Services, where servers will be stored, managed and maintained by Oracle. Business Insider reports that the hardware for the public cloud service will ne stored at Oracle data centers.

According to ZDNET, the Oracle Private Cloud will run both Oracle and customer software.

"The Oracle Private Cloud is quite literally an extension of the Oracle Cloud," Ellison said. "You can't tell the difference." The new service is meant to be "interchangeable" with other Oracle cloud solutions.

Security and efficiency were highlighted by Ellison. The New York Times speculates that Oracle will compete with companies like Amazon or Google by "promising better security, reliable industry standard practices, and a higher quality of services."

Ellison went on to stress that Oracle Cloud is a new service offered by Oracle and that its main competitor is Amazon not IBM.

Oracle specializes in enterprise hardware and software, like servers and database management software. Its main competitor has traditionally been IBM, which also offers hardware and software solutions for businesses.
