Pogoplug offering 100GB of cloud storage to UK users for just £19.99 a year

Remember Pogoplug, the company who built pink personal "cloud engines" that offered networked storage inside your house, accessible from anywhere around the world? Stateside, Pogoplug have been building a more familiar cloud storage solution, and they've now announced that they're brining that service to the UK too.

Using Amazon's Glacier cloud network, for just 19.99 a year Pogoplug are offering 100GB of storage for photos, documents and multimedia files, accessible from a tablet, smartphone, laptop or desktop machine anywhere there is an internet connection available.

An extra layer of security is offered through the Pogoplug Cloud Accelerator, which hooks up to your router and pushes your locally backed up content to Pogoplug's owncloud storage space.

"Amazon is revolutionising cloud storage with Glacier. Our new offering provides the missing link by eliminating the slow retrieval time intrinsic to Glacier and making all content instantly accessible," said Daniel Putterman, CEO of Pogoplug.

"By keeping data synchronised between Amazon Glacier and a Pogoplug cloud accelerator in the home or office, we are offering unprecedented pricing for safe, fast cloud storage."

Pogoplug also offer 300GB and 1TB packages for those with more demanding cloud storage needs.

It's a very competitive offering from Pogoplug, no doubt helped by using Amazon's infrastructure. Google Drive, Microsoft SkyDrive, Dropbox and Apple iCloud will have to dig deep to match Pogoplug's aggressive pricing and capacity options.

Welcome to Mashable! Sign in with or

Few words in tech have had more buzz over the past couple years than the omnipresent cloud. Cloud computing has ushered in a new era of technology, changed the way many companies do business and facilitated the age of mobile devices and social networking.

But not every organization has been so quick to flock to the cloud. A major outage to cloud computing servers used by Instagram this summer showed the potential pitfalls for businesses and brands.

The following infographic from CA Technologies CloudViews is based on a recent survey of IT leaders; it shows just how and why some companies have been slow to adapt.

Among its more interesting findings: While 80% of respondents say cloud computing drives innovation, more than 50% say they had no immediate plans to implement it. Why the disconnect? Job anxiety could be one reason. A shade under half of respondents say they believe companies will have to create entirely new IT jobs to accommodate a transition to the cloud, while 56% say cloud computing will require current employees to learn new skills.

For more, check out the full infographic below. Then, tell us in the comments: Do you think cloud computing is critical for all organizations today, or can some afford to sit out?

Brinkster Selects Radware's Attack Mitigation System to Protect its Cloud and Hosting Customers Against Cyber Attacks

MAHWAH, New Jersey, October 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

Radware(RDWR), a leading provider of application delivery and application security solutions for virtual and cloud data centers, today announced that global hosting and cloud service provider Brinkster has deployed Radware's Attack Mitigation System (AMS) to help protect Brinkster's customers worldwide against the new generation of sophisticated, multi-vectored cyber attacks.

Headquartered in Phoenix, AZ, Brinkster offers dedicated and managed hosting and cloud computing services to over 50,000 customers ranging from small start-ups to large corporations with the majority of its small and midsize customers using its shared hosting services. As Brinkster's business in this segment grew, it looked to Radware for a security solution to protect its infrastructure against not only incoming hacking attempts on its servers, but also attempts from hackers to use its shared servers to launch outbound attacks. What's more, the solution also had to meet Brinkster's rigorous demands for uninterrupted network uptime so it could deliver on its service level agreements (SLAs).

Radware's AMS gave Brinkster an advantage over the security offerings of its incumbent network security provider because of Radware's unique and evolved approach to providing converged perimeter security. Radware's use of behavioral analysis technology in detecting multi-vector cyber attacks set its technology apart from the standard signature-based techniques used by other intrusion prevention system vendors.

Also, because of the growing portion of Brinkster's data traffic that is secured and encrypted by the SSL protocol, Radware's AMS delivered a security solution that can detect and mitigate denial of service (DoS) and distributed DoS (DDoS) attacks that are SSL encrypted. Today's anti-DoS security solutions do not effectively mitigate HTTP-encrypted DoS and DDoS attacks. Through patent-pending technology, Radware's AMS is the first security solution of its kind that can protect against high-rate, SSL-based, Web-encrypted DoS and DDoS attacks.

"Radware is pleased to have been chosen to partner with Brinkster. Our technology is ideally suited to securing cloud and multi-tenant hosting environments, and we believe that with AMS protection, Brinkster can fulfill its network uptime guarantee to its customers, even if its data centers fall prey to attacks," said Amir Peles, Vice President, Technology, Radware. "Small businesses and enterprise customers that depend on Brinkster can rest assured that they are protected by the leading attack mitigation solution available."

With AMS now fully deployed, Brinkster is working with Radware on new business opportunities such as offering premium managed security services.

"Radware's Attack Mitigation System is the leading perimeter protection solution for safeguarding businesses against an increasingly complex landscape of multi-vector availability-based threats, - including zero-day attacks that would defeat traditional intrusion prevention technologies," said Nathaniel Kemberling, Brinkster's CTO. "The Radware system mitigates both known and new forms of attack while allowing legitimate business traffic to be handled as normal, so the business continuity of our hosted cloud customers is preserved even while under attack. Brinkster customers can be assured that their cloud-hosted data and their businesses that depend on it are secure and available."

About Radware AMS

Radware's AMS is a real-time network and application attack mitigation solution that protects the application infrastructure against network and application downtime, application vulnerability exploitation, malware spread, information theft, Web service attacks and Web defacement. It contains a protection layer with security modules including DoS protection, Network Behavioral Analysis (NBA), Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), Reputation Engine and Web Application Firewall (WAF) to fully safeguard networks, servers and applications against known and emerging network security threats.

Get a free 15GB cloud-storage account from 4Sync

What's the catch? There isn't one, save for a few small bugs here and there. Sync any file or folder to the cloud and all your devices.

Cloud-storage vendors are falling all over themselves to attract new customers.

Dropbox, by far the most popular, offers newcomers freebie accounts with 2GB of space. SugarSync raises the bar to 5GB, while Microsoft ponies up 7GB for its SkyDrive service.

If you're looking for even more cloud storage and want to keep your wallet closed, check out 4Sync. The company, just out of beta, currently offers 15GB of cloud storage free of charge.

True to its name, 4Sync promises to keep all your files in sync across all your devices: laptop, desktop, tablet, and smartphone. But unlike, say, Dropbox and SkyDrive, 4Sync lets you sync any file or folder, not just those deposited in designated buckets. SugarSync is one of the few competitors to match that enviable feature.

I took the service for a quick test-drive, and will admit to running into a few bumps. For starters, when you install the desktop client for Windows (it's also available for Mac and Linux), it attempts to slip in McAfee Security Scan -- harmless, but I really dislike this kind of sneakware. Fortunately, one click opts you out, so long as you don't blindly blow past it.

Next, after syncing a smattering of photos from my desktop to my new cloud account, I went to view them in my browser -- and discovered that a few thumbnails didn't display properly.

Meanwhile, although the Android version of 4Sync worked well enough (offering to automatically upload all existing photos and videos from my device), the iOS version fared poorly. The photos I selected (one at a time, the only option) from my Camera Roll refused to upload, and overall syncing seemed buggy. There's also a Files view I couldn't explain.

Those wrinkles aside, 4Sync offers a pretty pleasant cloud-storage experience. It uploaded very quickly from my desktop, and afforded all the usual browser-based options you could want: different views, easy file/folder sharing, photo slideshows, and so on.

If you decide you want more than 15GB of space, 4Sync offers a 100GB Premium account for $9.95 per month -- a competitive rate. But it gets even better if you prepay for a year: $75, which works out to $6.50 per month.
