ProfitBricks Hosting Neighborhood Pay Services Cloud-based Automated Payments

Oct. 15 BusinessWire BOSTON ProfitBricks, the infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) company that has completely reengineered the delivery of cloud computing, today announced that it has been selected by Neighborhood Pay Services (NPS), a financial service provider for the multifamily housing industry, to host the companys cloud-based applications. NPS chose ProfitBricks to improve network reliability and performance speeds while reducing hosting costs almost by half. NPS hosts two applications in the cloud, one for renters and one for property owners/managers. The company also performs back-end financial analysis, analytics research and product testing in ProfitBricks cloud environment.

Our network use spikes with payment cycles and during parts of the month when we are more research intensive, said Richard Calmas, CEO, Neighborhood Pay Services. The ability to scale processing power up and down with demand helps us build our data center around our business model, not around the technical limits of old servers, traditional data centers and month-to-month pricing policies. The added performance and reliability we receive are an unexpected bonus. We can now do more processing for less money, faster than we did with legacy cloud providers.

The need for by-the-minute scaling is common across most organizations that are transaction intensive, said ProfitBricks Chief Executive Officer, U.S., Bob Rizika. Financial services and retail are particularly vulnerable to the limitations of legacy cloud design and pricing models. We believe were bringing a new world of opportunity to those industries, and others, by rethinking and re-architecting cloud computing from the ground up.

InfiniBand: Bringing Supercomputing Technology to Cloud Computing

Among many new technology firsts, ProfitBricks introduced an InfiniBand backed network to cloud computing, the same technology used in high performance computing. InfiniBand offers up to 80 Gbit network speed for users of the ProfitBricks cloud, more than four times the available speed from any other cloud provider. The result is dramatically faster data transfer to and from each server and storage node. Faster throughput is perfect for big data intensive applications, ultimately reducing costs for customers who can provision fewer CPU cores, memory and storage. More information about the first use of InfiniBand high performance cloud technology in the cloud can be found at ProfitBricks.com.

Cloud Security Evolves in Wellington

MEDIA RELEASE

Cloud Security Evolves in Wellington

WELLINGTON, New Zealand, 14 October 2012. Cloud computing has become the number one priority for New Zealand IT managers, with security seen as the most important criteria for companies when selecting a cloud vendor.

These are just some of the findings from new research that will be presented at the EVOLVE.Cloud security conference to be held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Wellington on Tuesday, 16 October.

The event, hosted by Trend Micro and free for registered attendees, brings together local and global experts, analysts, and leaders across industry to examine the rapidly evolving area of cloud, mobility and the consumerisation of IT.

Designed for IT security professionals and executives, the conference also includes the key players in the cloud ecosystem, such as VMware, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, and Frost and Sullivan.

Sanjay Mehta, Managing Director, Trend Micro ANZ, said: The benefits of cloud computing have been proven for business and government, ranging from lower costs to increased innovation. As with any fast-growing technology, there are risks and challenges, but security should not be seen as a barrier to adoption.

Andre Clarke, Country Manager, NZ, Frost and Sullivan, will present new research analysing the current state of the cloud in New Zealand.

Cloud computing has been transforming businesses and industries for several years. This will continue, but at a faster rate than before, and IT managers in New Zealand are now saying the cloud is their first priority. 57% of organisations that are currently using cloud-based solutions plan to increase their budget over the next 12 months. Of organisations that plan to increase their cloud-based solutions budget, the planned budget increase is generally significant; 18% plan to increase it by more than 20%, said Mr Clarke.

Adrian Van Hest, Director, Risk, Compliance and Security, PricewaterhouseCoopers NZ, will discuss "Cloud - A Perspective for Government." This will leverage PwC's global experience and local knowledge to present a number of real world scenarios, and provide relevant context to assist agencies with their strategy and planning activities as they look to leverage the opportunity presented by the cloud.

Akitio Cloud Hybrid Review: Convenient NAS and USB Storage in One

Jon L. JacobiJon Jacobi, PCWorld

Jon L. Jacobi has worked with computers since you flipped switches and punched cards to program them, studied music at Julliard, and power mods his car for kicks. More by Jon L. Jacobi

It's nice to be versatile, and the $105 Akitio Cloud Hybrid is just that. You can use this single-bay drive box either for network-attached storage (NAS) via the unit's ethernet jack, or for direct-attached storage (DAS) on a PC or Mac via the box's USB 3.0 port.

You can also access the Cloud Hybrid across the Web by using FTP, WebDav, or Akitio's Web portal using either the device's ID or the MAC address listed on the bottom of the drive. Alternatively, you can use the iOS app.

The Cloud Hybrid is a basic black box. You remove three screws from the bottom of the unit to access the drive bay and install your hard drive. On the front you'll find power, status, and connection status lights, as well as four lights that tell you the approximate percentage of the unit's total storage space that's filled. There are no ports for connecting external devices, so you can't dedicate an attached drive for backup, expanding capacity, hosting printers, or the like.

The Cloud Hybrid offers a decent array of software features. In addition to the aforementioned access protocols, you get local iTunes serving and BitTorrent downloads, plus the usual admin functions for defining users and creating shared folders. The interface is a tad clunky, but it's easy enough to figure out after a few minutes at the Akitio Cloud Hybrid Wiki; the included setup sheet is a tad terse, however. Though network access could be a bit easier to configure, Akitio provides software utilities for finding the box for both Windows and OS X.

A few usage notes: You'll need to power down the Cloud Hybrid before switching interfaces. And you may need to plug the unit in twice the first time you attach it via USBonce for the driver to install, and a second time for the drive to show up. Also, be aware that all of the data on the drive will be visible when you attach the unit to a PC via USB, no matter what access rules you define for the unit as a NAS box. That's a security issue common to all dual-purpose NAS/DAS devices.

If you're looking for flexible single-bay storage that's equally at home attached to a PC or via ethernet, the Akitio Cloud Hybrid is an affordable, competent choice.

Competent NAS and DAS, both in the same affordable box.

Ubuntu's cloud storage service hits Mac in beta, with 5GB free

Canonical's Ubuntu One cloud storage service hit Mac OS X in a beta on Thursday, bringing Ubuntu's Dropbox competitor to all widely used platforms. The service already had applications for Windows, iOS, Android, and of course, Ubuntu.

"As this is a beta we are still working hard fixing bugs to make the Mac client even slicker," Canonical said in an announcement. "Please be patient whilst we iron out the kinks over the coming weeks." Users can report bugs at the Ubuntu One help site.

Just like Dropbox, SkyDrive, or Google Drive, Ubuntu One adds a folder to your file system for sharing files across devices. It also provides a management console from which you can add folders to sync, manage connected devices, share links, and configure settings on syncing, notifications, and limits on upload and download speed:

Beyond the desktop and mobile clients, there's a browser-based tool to access files from any device. I tested out syncing a file from a Mac to an Ubuntu PC this morning, and it worksquickly. In addition to 5GB storage, the free tier of the service provides file sync across all platforms, sharing folders and files, and mobile access. Canonical is in the money-making business, though, so there are subscription options and integration with the Ubuntu One Music Store in a manner similar to that used by Amazon's Cloud Drive.

For $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year, Ubuntu One users can add 20GB for a total of 25GB storage, and can continue to add 20GB blocks for the same price. For $3.99 a month or $39.99 a year, users get the additional 20GB plus music streaming on mobile, with a cache for offline listening. You can start off with six months of free music streaming and 20GB of storage by buying one track from Ubuntu One.

Ubuntu One hit the 1 million user mark last year, and offers adeveloperprogram for building applications on top of the service.

Jon Brodkin / Jon is Ars Technica's senior IT reporter, covering the latest in business technology and the intersection of consumer technology and IT. He also writes about technology policy, patent litigation, supercomputing, and wireless technology.

HP Adds Another Feather to its Cap: HP Cloud

By SiliconIndia| Thursday, 11 October 2012, 18:15 IST | 1 Comments

Bangalore: For years, Hewlett Packard was best known for its servers in the enterprise. But for now it seems the thought of cloud computing is taking over, as HP is the latest to join the cloud community, as enterprises are already satisfied with HPs cloud service.

HP cloud offers a long list of Linux distributions like Ubuntu, Debian, and CentOS, which certainly is a big-blow to major players like Amazon and Google.

HPs cloud is primarily built on OpenStack technology, which makes the service quite flexible when compared to other clouds. Another advantage is the price list. HP offers 1GB of RAM for 4 cents per hour which better when compared to Rackspaces 6 cents per hour for a 1GB machine.

But still with all these advantages, enterprises are a bit disappointed on the unavailability of operating systems such as Windows Server and Red Hat Enterprise Server. Marc Padovani, HP Cloud Services director of product management, has hinted that the Windows Server operating system will arrive sooner, rather than later.

HPs Persistent Storage:

From the traditional idea of having a separate storage of each web service, HP has introduced its version called HP Cloud Object Storage. Inspired from Amazon S3, the cloud object storage provides APIs for storing and retrieving files.

Another stand out quality is its web interface. Files can be uploaded directly as the browser handles the rest of computing process. Also there are network monitoring tools incorporated within the browser so that users can predetermine the ports to be opened on their respective machines. This saves the logging time into each machine to run a script.

The storage price is another big advantage in HPs cloud. While the uploading bandwidth comes free, the outgoing data has a price. After the first few free gigabytes, the cost per data downloaded is 12 cents.

This Week in the Cloud: OpenStack, Analytics and More

This week had a few notable updates, including one from Rackspace. The cloud hosting provider introduced something called OpenStack Fundamentals, a certification course thats based on material developed for internal use. The material has been around for a year or so, so Rackspace had a lot of time to polish it up before offering it to the community.

OpenStack Fundamentals is available for $2500 per seat, and organizations have the option of setting up an on-premise classroom for up to 18 engineers for a fee. Rackspace is justifying the premium price tag with the very valid claim that enterprises are looking to hire IT personnel with cloud expertise more than ever.

The second update comes from the VMworld Europe conference that was held this week in Spain. One of the clients at the event was a service provider named Colt, which shared its VCE and VMware View case studies on the showroom floor. The firm is leveraging Vblocks, Cisco UCS servers and management software from Atlantis to support 20,000 virtual desktops; it also operates the single largest vCloud 5.1 deployment in Europe.

In turn, Alteryx released version8.0of its analytics software. The main addition is Analytics Gallery, a hosted app marketplace that clients can use to distribute apps and info within their organization. Gallery features 30 different analytical apps and 5 native data visualization tools that allow decision makers to gain faster access to insight.

In the personal cloud space, Springpad rolled out a few new features to its web and Android apps. The productivity tool now has Board, a scrapbook interface that allows you to organize notes pictures via simple drag-n-drop. Springpad has become even more user friendly with the ability to reshuffle notebooks at any given time.
