Hybrid Backup Software addresses local and cloud-based needs.

LONGMONT, Colo. -- Rebit Inc., developers of award-winning, "ridiculously simple" backup software for consumers, professionals and small businesses, today announced its enhanced RebitPro hybrid backup software, which now backs up both clients and servers.

Developed for small businesses that require the speed and security of local backup but also want the redundancy and protection that offsite cloud backup provides, RebitPro seamlessly marries full system local backup and recovery with cloud backup to provide a comprehensive backup solution that is simple to use. Rebit's unique hybrid architecture leverages a single backup engine and user interface to back up both clients and servers, locally and in the cloud.

"Before RebitPro, backing up clients and servers both locally and in the cloud required multiple backup systems," commented Paul Guerin, CEO, Rebit Inc. "Running multiple independent backup systems results in duplication of effort, cost and unnecessary complexity. With RebitPro's innovative, hybrid architecture, businesses can now have simple, comprehensive, and cost-effective client and server backup and recovery in a single solution."

"Combining local and cloud backup for disaster recovery in one interface and backup package, Rebit has created what may be the missing link for solo attorneys and small law firms when it comes to an affordable, easy-to-use and comprehensive backup and disaster recovery solution," stated Nerino J. Petro Jr., technology editor, GPSolo magazine.

"I installed and tested RebitPro for a small police department requiring 24/7 operation," said Gerry Anthony, president, G-tech Solutions. "The installation went very smoothly, and took less than 30 minutes to complete and set up both a network and cloud backup schedule. RebitPro exceeded my expectations, allowing for multiple points of backup, local, network and cloud all at the same time. It is intuitive enough to keep both a local and network backup updated without any degradation in performance on the server."

"I plan to offer RebitPro to all of my clients with servers and small networks," added Mr. Anthony. "It will help them get away from multiple vendors - one for local backup and one for cloud backup - and will work in real time, giving a better point of recovery if something should happen. RebitPro will simplify the backup process for a significant number of my clients and remove the concerns they have about current backup processes with multiple vendors. For me, it provides a simple solution to a complex problem - server backup."

RebitPro is available through Rebit's network of authorized partners or online at http://www.rebit.com. For more information, visit the Rebit Pro product page. Rebit is also introducing major enhancements for its channel partner program. To become an authorized partner, visit http://www.rebit.com/partner.

Old-School Web Hosts Fight Back Against Amazon Cloud

Since its launch in 2006, Amazons Elastic Compute Cloud aka EC2 has changed the way companies and developers think about hosting software applications. In the past, you called up a web hosting outfit, negotiated a price, and signed contract, and they assigned you a certain number of servers sitting in a data center. But with EC2, you just opened a web browser and spun up a few virtual servers, paying only for what you needed.

But now, the traditional web hosts are fighting back.

This week, two of the biggest names in web hosting Dreamhost and Media Temple announced new cloud services based on OpenStack, an open source platform that seeks to mimic the Amazon way.

OpenStack has received tremendous hype since it was announced in 2010, but its only recently that the platform has been used in production. Rackspace officially switched its servers to OpenStack in August, offering a public cloud along the lines of Amazon, and HP rolled out its public cloud offering in May. Meanwhile, countless outfits are using OpenStack to help you set up a private cloud an Amazon-style service thats only available to your own employees.

Dreamhost is entering the public cloud fray with DreamCompute, while MediaTemple is adding private cloud services to its portfolio of offerings.

Dreamhosts entry into the public cloud market has been long anticipated. It joined the OpenStack Foundation in April and has not been quiet about its ambitions.

Central to Dreamhosts cloud computing strategy is Ceph, an open source storage system created by Dreamhost founder Sage Weil. DreamCompute is based on OpenStack with Ceph and network virtualization from VMwares recent acquisition Nicira.

Weil launched a separate company called Inktank in May to support Ceph, but Dreamhost does offer a Ceph-based storage service called DreamObjects that can integrate with DreamCompute.

Other companies looking to get into storage for OpenStack include Basho, which already has a partnership with Citrix to provide block storage for CloudStack, a competing open source cloud computing system.

Media Temples offering is based on an OpenStack appliance from Morphlabs called the mCloud Helix Solution. The appliance includes OpenStack running on Dell servers with solid-state disks, along with Dells open source deployment software Crowbar. The appliance will also include 24/7 remote support and maintenance.

Get an extra 25GB of storage in the Dropbox Great Space Race

Among the many cloud storage services available today, Dropbox has continued to stand out from the pack by providing lots of ways to earn extra free storage. They offer an additional 500MB for referrals, and 125MB for connecting a Facebook account, following Dropbox on Twitter, or just providing feedback. Today the company announced a new way to get an even bigger boost to your storage limit: The Great Dropbox Space Race.

By registering a college email address and installing the Dropbox client, youll earn points for your school. As the schools point total climbs, everyone who participates can earn extra free storage for the next two years. Each person gets an extra 3GB just for signing up for the Space Race, but if the school reaches the top tier, the total bonus space will hit 25GB.

If youve already got a Dropbox account thats registered with a non-school email account, you can still participate by verifying your school address on the Space Race page. By registering youll earn 1 point for your school, and you can then tack on an additional 2 points by going through the Dropbox Get Started guide. If you refer one of your classmates to the promotion, youll also earn 1 point when he or she registers, and 2 when he or she completes the guide. And all of those referrals will still earn you the usual 500MB bonus.

There are four reward levels of 3GB, 8GB, 15GB, and 25GB. The number of points needed to reach them are different for each school, and are normalized according to the schools total enrollment. So even if youre at a smaller school, youve still got a shot at hitting that 25GB mark.

Symform Hires Senior Sales Executive to Build Global Partnerships as Distributed Cloud Storage Network Surpasses 5.5 …

SEATTLE, WA--(Marketwire - Oct 15, 2012) - Symform, the world's first distributed, crowdsourced cloud backup and storage service, is experiencing record growth fueled by users of Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices. NAS customers from more than 80 countries now account for 20 percent of all devices on the Symform Global Storage Network, storing more than 1.1 billion data fragments. Symform recently announced integrated solutions with Synology and NETGEAR NAS devices, adding to an already successful partnership with QNAP. To further accelerate its partnership strategy and network growth, Symform has brought on a seasoned executive, Bob DeSantis, as senior vice president of global sales and business development.

With more than 25 years of technology industry leadership, DeSantis is an ideal candidate to drive Symform's sales and partnership initiatives. Prior to Symform, he served as vice president of sales at DocuSign, building the sales organization from an early-stage startup to the global brand leader. As the managing director of DocuSign EMEA, he established and built the company's European presence. DeSantis also previously served as the regional VP of sales for Procuri, and held numerous leadership roles at ImageX, the on-demand commercial document solutions division of FedEx Kinko's.

"Symform has created the most disruptive and innovative cloud storage business model I've ever seen," said DeSantis. "Accelerating the Symform Cloud Storage Network will be critical for long-term success, and I'm looking forward to playing a key role in a business that is changing the industry as we know it."

As of Q3 2012, the Symform Cloud Storage Network stored over 5.5 billion data fragments and 150 million files, with users backing up data and contributing local drive space to the network from 156 countries. This represents a growth rate of over 300 percent in the third quarter compared to the same period last year. In addition to its NAS strategy, the accelerated network growth is due to the company's recently announced "Bytes or Bucks" pricing model, where customers can pay for unlimited cloud backup by contributing local drive space to the crowdsourced network.

NAS users have especially embraced the Bytes model, extending local storage devices to the Symform Cloud for secure online data backup and disaster recovery. In partnering with the leading NAS vendors, Symform is tapping into a fast-growing market and millions of prospective customers worldwide. According to Gartner, the worldwide vendor revenue for network-attached storage grew 21.5 percent to $4.5 billion last year,* and the market is expected to continue growing by 22 percent through 2016.**

"A NAS device coupled with Symform's cloud storage offering is an all-in-one solution for data backup," said Denton Meier, founder, partner and CTO at Firefly Technologies. "The NAS gets to serve its purpose for local backup and can be seamlessly integrated with Symform to obtain the power and protection of cloud storage." Firefly uses QNAP devices for local backup and pays for Symform cloud backup with 'Bytes' by contributing unused drive space in its NAS devices.

Customers leveraging Symform with NAS appliances receive cost-effective, high performing and secure two-tier storage, with benefits including free cloud backup, fast appliance to cloud backup and restore, no file size limit, data synchronization, and data redundancy for disaster recovery. How to get your first cloud computing job

David Linthicum | Oct. 15, 2012

With the explosion of cloud computing jobs, now is the time to map your path to more money and more cloud

Cloud computing is expanding rapidly, with an accompanying need for for cloud computing "experts" to make this technology work. That translates into many new jobs chasing very few qualified candidates. At the same time, many IT professionals are attempting to figure out how they can cash in on the cloud.

Most of the cloud jobs to be found these days require deep knowledge around a particular technology, such as Amazon Web Services, OpenStack, Salesforce.com, or Azure. This is typically due to the fact that the company has standardized on a cloud technology. I call these jobs cloud technology specialists, in that they focus on a specific cloud technology: development, implementation, management, and so on.

Others jobs would be cloud planning or architecture positions, often around the configuration of new systems in the cloud or the migration of existing systems to the cloud. I call these cloud planners. While you'd think candidates for this position would also be in demand, in most instances the listings are filled by existing IT staffers who understand full well that having cloud computing experience on their CV translates into larger paychecks going forward. You can't blame them.

Those looking to break into cloud computing will have the best luck by learning a specific technology, then taking a cloud technology specialist job. The trick is getting the initial experience.

The most ambitious candidates will begin their own "shadow IT" projects using a hot cloud computing technology, then soon find their way to a formal and high-paying cloud gig. Cloud computing is littered with stories about self-taught successes, due to the lack of formal training offered.

Those seeking higher-level jobs such as cloud planners and architects won't entertain as many options, but they can be found. The best way to prepare for these jobs is to understand all you can about the technology, including use cases and existing architectural best practices and approaches.

If there's an upside to the emergence of cloud computing, it's the number of job opportunities it's creating, much like any hyped technology trend we've seen in the past. Cloud computing, however, is a further-reaching, more systemic change in the way we consume technology. Thus, the job growth around this change will last for many years. Perhaps it's time to take advantage.
