As Mobile Grows, So Does Cloud Computing

Analyst firm IHS published an important study last week. It predicts that, for the first time ever, PC shipments would drop year-over-year; for 2012, total shipments will drop 1.2 percent. IDC and Gartner agree, noting that third quarter PC shipments fell 8 percent. It's the steepest drop since 2001.

While it's clear that use of new form factors such as smartphones and tablets has been skyrocketing over the past few years, this study is the first that indicates that this growth, far from incremental, is taking share from the previously dominant form factor. Of course, some may not accept the study's findings, feeling that rumors of the death of the PC have been overstated. It may be the case, too, that the total number of PCs sold in 2012 won't really shrink but may, instead, end up showing modest growth.

Whether you accept the study's prediction or not, it's clear that the heady growth of PCs is over and this form factor now represents a mature market. Incremental growth in client use will shift to these new form factors.

Analysis: Windows 8 Given Tall Order of Saving the PC

What's crucial to understand, however, is that these form factors are just moving into their torrid growth phase, and the total client device market is going to explode well beyond common expectations. Put more simply, while PCs recently have been growing on the order of 5 percent or 10 percent per year, these new devices are growing at rates exceeding 100 percent; in a few years their growth will cause the overall client device market to be 500 percent or even 1,000 percent larger.

Mobile Users Compute 'With' Devices, Not 'On' Them

That growth is going to make the cloud computing phenomenon even bigger.

Why? It's simple. Smartphones and tablets are application consumption devices. People don't do computing on them, they do computing with them. While the data may emanate from the device (a digital photo taken with an iPhone app, for example), the computing for that app typically resides elsewhere-in the cloud.

I do far more computing with my iPad than I ever imagined, but the computing is of a different form than what I do with my laptop or desktop machine. I consume media (Netflix and Amazon Video), interact with apps (Feedly for RSS feeds, SlideShark to display presentations, and specialized apps to interact with different services like that from my local library system), and perform ongoing business functions such as reading email-but I am not, generally speaking, creating much data or content on the device.

The ultimate destination for my iPad apps is some cloud-based application. That's where the data and functionality reside. Every one of the apps I use drives remote computing in the cloud.

OKI and ISID to Provide Chemical Information System as Cloud Computing Services

TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

OKI (OKI Electric Industry)(TOKYO:6703) and ISID (Information Services International-Dentsu) today announced the launch of "PLEXUS CM" which incorporates part of OKI's "COINServ-COSMOS-R/R", system for managing information on chemicals found in products, as a new choice from the menu of features provided as part of ISID's "PLEXUS" enterprise product life-cycle management (PLM) cloud computing service. The two companies reached an agreement in the area of cloud computing services for manufacturers who are aiming for global deployment in May 2011 and had been developing and examining services jointly. The new service will be offered today to the global market.

The increasingly stringent environmental laws and regulations being enacted worldwide include the RoHS Directive and REACH Regulation in the European Union (EU). These measures impose upon electric, electronics, machinery, and other manufacturing industries a growing need to manage information on chemical substances throughout the supply chain, including parts procurement and assembly. The information on chemical substances contained in products to be managed ranges from electronic components and mechanical components to coatings and adhesives. Year after year, regulations cover an expanding range of materials. The task of accurately managing such information and reporting it to customers now poses significant burdens for companies active in manufacturing industries, particularly those active globally and operating both domestic and overseas design and production facilities.

"The new "PLEXUS CM" is a service that enhances communications on chemical substances. ISID has expanded OKI's "COINServ-COSMOS-R/R" system for managing information on chemicals found in products as cloud computing services which is provided as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) application," says Atsushi Yoshimoto, Managing Director at ISID. "It can be used standalone as well as be linked with other menus on "PLEXUS" such as "PLEXUS PDM" product data management service, allowing chemical substance information system along with product design information to be established in a short period of time while minimizing initial costs."

"Moving forward, ISID plans to provide "PLEXUS" to 150 companies over the next three years. The company will further enhance the service and support domestic and foreign manufacturers who seek to advance globalization," says Sei Yano, Senior Vice President, responsible for Solutions and Services at OKI. "OKI will continue to support corporate environmental activities by enhancing features on "COINServ-COSMOS-R/R" system for managing information on chemicals found in products."

Cloud computing: Top five tax considerations for your business

More and more start-ups, entrepreneurial and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are migrating to the cloud and grappling with new tax considerations and challenges. Ernst & Youngs latest Global information security survey reveals 45% of companies have already deployed or are evaluating cloud services. Whats more, cloud revenue growth is expected to experience a 26% compound annual growth rate from now until 2014. Thats five times faster than the IT industry as a whole.

Cloud computing has the potential to increase the effectiveness of IT initiatives, reduce the cost of in-house operations, increase operational flexibility and generate a competitive advantage in global markets. The cost efficiencies of cloud computing, in particular, can enable start-ups and SMEs to implement IT services without substantial upfront investment. But while the benefits may be clear, the risks are too often overlooked.

Cloud computing is borderless by nature but domestic and foreign tax regulations and compliance requirements are not. This simple-sounding difference can give rise to complex and potentially significant tax issues for businesses operating beyond their borders. Taxation can vary dramatically across jurisdictions, and international tax authorities have yet to issue definitive guidance for cloud computing models, leaving SMEs to make decisions based on current international and transfer pricing rules that could lead to significant tax controversy and potential double taxation.

With tax rules one step behind, business management and shareholders could be in for some unpleasant surprises. Businesses, whether cloud computing service providers or cloud business users, need to be aware of the taxation risks and challenges involved, including the following top five challenges:

Moving to the cloud isnt just another change program its nothing less than a complete transition of business processes. And it keeps evolving. Cloud computing business models are developing much more rapidly than the global taxing jurisdictions can respond with definitive and practical guidance.

As tax laws evolve and catch up with business models, SMEs will need to adapt their tax structures and compliance models and must ensure that they keep abreast of ever-evolving domestic and international tax laws and regulatory requirements in the countries where they conduct business. By being proactive, working closely with a trusted advisor, and creating a forward-thinking strategy that takes these factors into account, SMEs will gain a competitive advantage in this rapidly evolving area.

Cloud computing improves nurse call system

today's news

related articles

Bob Sodemann, co-founder of DataComm Plus, an information technology and telecommunications systems firm and data center based in Franklin, is combining existing technologies in innovative ways to help nurses reach patients requiring immediate attention quicker and more fluidly.

Sodemann developed the Ultimate Caregiver, which merges pull cord technology with the power of cloud computing and mobile devices to allow for wireless paging and generated staff response reports. The integration of these technologies is especially useful for nursing facilities and elderly care homes, where nursing staffs are constantly on the go, attending to a number of patients.

"We're applying these technologies in new and creative ways," Sodemann said.

The development behind the collaboration of these technologies has been an evolving process over the past five years with cloud computing introduced to the collaboration earlier this year.

The Ultimate Caregiver connects a pull cord system, either wired or wireless, in a nursing facility with a cloud hosted at a data center. When a patient pulls a pull cord, it triggers a light to turn on. A light sensor sees the automatic light and sends the pull cord information to the data center over the Internet. The data center then transmits the information to pagers and mobile devices to alert nursing staffs about where the pull cord call is coming from. Alerts can be sent through texts, e-mails, pages and phone calls.

The data center also tracks pull cord calls and generates reports detailing the amount of time staff takes to respond to a particular call.

According to Sodemann, the Ultimate Caregiver's most significant strengths are that all computing involved takes place in the cloud which is more reliable than other servers, and the cloud can be connected to existing nurse call systems so that facilities do not have to invest in costly new technology.

DataComm Plus has connected these capabilities using the cloud with four facilities, including two in the greater Milwaukee area, one in Nebraska and one in Iowa.

Open Text profit beats estimates on cloud services

By Ankur Banerjee

(Reuters) - Canadian business software company Open Text Corp's adjusted quarterly profit handily beat estimates, as its expansion into cloud computing services began to pay off, although revenue from licenses fell short of its expectations.

Open Text expanded its presence in cloud computing earlier this year when it bought EasyLink Services International Corp for $232 million.

Cloud computing services accounted for $44.9 million of the company's total revenue of $326.2 million in the first quarter ended September 30. Open Text did not report any revenue from cloud services in the year-earlier period.

"We are moving more and more services into the cloud this quarter," Chief Executive Mark Barrenechea told Reuters.

Open Text's products help companies and government agencies manage compliance and other information.

The company's net income fell to $19.4 million, or 33 cents per share, in the first quarter, from $35 million, or 60 cents per share, a year earlier, largely because of an income tax provision of $16.2 million.

The company, whose partners include Microsoft Corp and Oracle Corp, earned $1.31 per share on an adjusted basis. Revenue rose 13 percent.

Analysts on average had expected an adjusted profit of $1.17 per share on revenue of $334.3 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Licensing revenue, a measure of future demand, fell 14 percent to $55.7 million in the quarter.
