Towards a blue sky: How SMEs can avoid Cloud Computing confusion

Beginning a series of content in the lead up to the Business Cloud Summit in London on 27 November, Max Meiklejohn outlines how small businesses can cut through Cloud Computing jargon and find the best model for their business.

To register for a free ticket to Britain's biggest Cloud Computing event, click here.

Cloud Computing is a widely touted phrase and SMEs are often bombarded with the latest solutions and offerings. The benefits of cloud computing may be well documented at a top level, but with shrinking IT budgets, it is imperative that organisations know the ins and outs of the service they are about to buy in to.

All too often, that is interpreted as an even longer list of vague benefits with little tangible meaning, but how do SMEs know what the best service is for them? The answer isnt always simple, so to avoid cloud confusion, this article provides a breakdown of the various cloud models and their inherent challenges and benefits.

Public versus private clouds:The obvious choice?

The most common model for SMEs is a public cloud, located off-site and managed by a service provider, which relieves the IT department of having to manage storage and computing resources as well as reducing its liability in terms of maintenance and repair. In general, public clouds are more cost effective for smaller organisations when compared to a private cloud, simply because deploying a private cloud is typically hosted on the premises of the organisation and is managed and maintained by the IT department in-house.

Large enterprises with complex IT requirements may consider deploying their own private cloud, but for SMEs simply looking to streamline storage and communication, it is often overkill. Furthermore, if an organisation requires an application on a temporary basis, deploying through a public cloud negates the need to buy additional equipment that will only be used for a short period of time.

Eastday-Microsoft picks city for cloud computing

MICROSOFT Corp has chosen Shanghai as the first city in China for commercial and public cloud computing services, Microsoft and the Shanghai government said yesterday.

"It's a milestone agreement to show Microsoft's commitment to China," said Ralph Haupter, chairman and CEO of Microsoft China. "Microsoft will continue to expand and accelerate investment in China, driving the next era of innovation and opportunity."

The cloud agreement enables customers in China to access Microsoft's Office 365 and Windows Azure services operated by 21Vianet in China, the world's biggest personal computer and Internet market.

Microsoft's Office 365 provides customers services including secure access to e-mails and calendars, instant messaging, conference and file sharing anywhere. Windows Azure offers customers in China with public cloud computing platform services including computing, storage, database, integration and networking services.

The data centers and related infrastructure, which will be built in Pudong New Area, support cloud computing services that allow users to save, edit, share and process data and files through various devices, including laptops, computers and mobile phones, based on the online "cloud" platform.

Apple Inc, Amazon Inc and Google Inc have also invested heavily in cloud computing.

Cloud computing will create 4 million new jobs for China by 2015, IDC predicted.

Shanghai, Microsoft and 21Vianet Group Inc, Microsoft's cloud service partner and operator in China, signed the strategic partnership agreement yesterday.

Cloud adoption growing in India: study

Cloud computing in 2013: a conversation with Appcore's CEO

Summary: Many hold opinions about what is going to happen in the cloud computing market in the coming year. Brian Patrick Donaghy, CEO of Appcore, offered five things he believes are in store for us in 2013

Brian Patrick Donaghy, CEO of Appcore, reached out to me to discuss the five things he expected to see in the cloud computing market in 2013. Since his company is in the business of providing Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) tools, it appeared to be an excellent opportunity to discuss what Appcore has learned from its customers' experiences using cloud computing.

In the end, the conversation turned into a rambling discussion of the history of computing, how technology is adopted around the world, and was great fun. Thanks Brian!

Here's what Brian Donaghy had to say about what we're going to see in 2013

Solving issues of trust, proximity, and data sovereignty, Local Cloud Networks are public and private infrastructure clouds delivered by your nearby internet provider, telco, MSO, and datacenter.

Orchestrated private cloud gives IT Dept a generalized infrastructure where they can set policy, security, and charge back. Enterprise appstores with internal apps, virtual desktops, and servers give the business consumer access and ease of use.

Skipping the pure virtualization phase, enterprise and ISVs in Asia especially the ASEAN countries will move to private and public orchestrated infrastructure. Similar to the jumps in telecommunication technology where countries skipped landline build out and CDMA, companies will skip the virtualization stage the US and Europe experienced.

With all the publicity surrounding cloud, one would think everyone is already using it. However, we are still in the beginning of the migration. Similar to the adoption path of Linux in 90s, SaaS in the 00s, and now Cloud in the 10s we will cross Moores chasm into the Early Majority Stage.

A Community Cloud is a multi-tenant infrastructure that supports a specific group of users by industry or geography. Great examples are a private HIPAA compliant cloud hosted for a group of hospitals and clinics; or a cloud hosted on a fiber ring dedicated just to connected companies; or a Telco Community Cloud provided specifically for telco DR to meet specific FCC regulations.

Cloud computing offers much promise, but is not a panacea. Depending upon one's views on what cloud computing really is, Brian seems to have highlighted some key trends. Will everything he suggestions actually happen in the coming year? We'll all have to wait and see.

Web Host NetSource Adds Complete Line of Cloud Hosting Services

Leading datacenter and Web hosting provider NetSource, located in the Chicago suburbs (Naperville), offers a complete line of public and private cloud hosting services based out of their SSAE16 Type II datacenter.

Naperville, IL (PRWEB) November 02, 2012 NetSource Communications (http://www.ntsource.com), a leading Chicago and Western Suburbs data center, now offers a complete line of cloud hosting services. NetSource is focusing on two distinctively different types of cloud hosting services, public and private cloud hosting. According to Craig Neidel, a NetSource employee of 14 years, NetSource identified a need for private cloud hosting because not every company can host on a public cloud and still meet complex compliance requirements. NetSources sixteen years of enterprise hosting experience has helped create a hosting product that offers reliability, flexibility, and a simpler billing model than the competition.

NetSources public cloud hosting starts for as little as $49 month. Businesses can create both Linux and Windows virtual server configurations and easily upgrade resources as they grow. The public cloud is protected using Junipers SRX Series firewalls and NetSource fully manages this security layer for the customer. NetSources public cloud hosting services also include some of the highest resource levels (CPU, Ram, San Disk) in the industry versus the cost of the service. NetSource built the public cloud using Citrix XenServer to ensure a fully redundant environment and enterprise performance.

NetSource also identified a need to build highly custom private cloud offerings to ensure business can meet todays complicated compliance requirements. NetSource can build a business their own private cloud with highly custom security hardware and settings, said Craig Neidel of NetSource. The customer will work with NetSource to identify the correct level of security. The customer also picks the number of physical dedicated servers they want in the cloud and NetSource adds a dedicated dual-controller san and Citrix Xenserver to create their cloud. The customer can run virtual servers on the cloud in a full redundant environment and add additional physical servers as they grow. Each private cloud NetSource builds is fully custom for the client. This allows NetSource to work with the customer and architect the exact security solution (firewalls, IDS, VPN) that is required for the customer to do business. The end result is a fully scalable private cloud that was developed to meet the needs of individual businesses. All this starts for as little at $1,899 per month.

Both the private and public cloud offerings are hosted in NetSources state-of-the-art datacenter. NetSources facility was built with advanced methods for redundancy, security, cooling, connectivity, and compliance. NetSource is a leading provider of many hosting solutions and perform yearly SSAE16 Type 2 audits to maintain standards.
