Google One is hiding one of its best-value cloud storage plans is it winding down, or just making it difficult to … – TechRadar

Google may be about to make some significant changes to its cloud storage offering, if recent alterations to its website are anything to go by.

Reports have claimed that one of its most popular Google One plans has apparently disappeared from the company's website, with different default offerings appearing in its place.

This could be users are forced to compromise when signing up for Google One cloud storage, having to choose less (or more) capacity than they want or need, or facing paying more for extra storage that never gets used.

The change was first spotted by Google Watch Blog, which noted that when users visit the Google One signup page, they are now presented with three options, rather than the previous four.

Alongside the default 15GB storage package, potential customers are offered a choice between the "Basic" 100GB plan, costing $1.99 per month and the "Premium" 2TB offering, costing $9.99 per month.

Previously, there had been an option for 200GB, costing $2.99 per month - but this is no longer being shown.

We've replicated this change on our own devices - however, the 200GB option does still appear to be available, with users able to upgrade or downgrade to this package once they have signed up for any of the other tiers.

Google told 9to5Google that the 200GB plan is still available, and that it will still be provided as an option to those already subscribed to the 100GB plan, but its exact motivation in hiding the option is somewhat of a puzzle.

It could be that the company is looking to push signups to its Premium 2TB offering, which comes with Gemini Advanced - Google's latest flagship AI platform, which it is keen to promote to as many customers as possible.

Described by the company as the "most capable" version of its Gemini model, known as Ultra 1.0, Gemini Advanced offers "state-of-the-art performance" that's capable of handling "highly complex tasks" tasks that can involve text, images, and code.

A popular Google One plan might be going away but don’t panic just yet – PhoneArena

Google One is by no means the search giant's most popular or profitable product, but with over 100 million global subscribers as of just last week, the cloud storage service certainly deserves to make headlines... for good and for bad reasons. The latest story is likely to enrage some users, at least if it proves to be as bad as it looks at first glance. If you're not a paid Google One subscriber yet and want to become one, its official website currently gives you a choice between 100GB, 2TB, and 2TB AI Premium plans. That's all well and good, but while those options may feel like they cater to the needs of most prospective users (alongside the free 15GB tier), there was actually something in the middle there until recently that appears to have gone away.

We're talking about the 200GB "Standard" plan, which used to cost $2.99 a month in the US compared to the $1.99 and $9.99 fees of the 100 gig "Basic" and 2TB "Premium" options respectively. Curiously enough, existing users who already pay for the Basic plan (as is the case for this writer, for instance) can still see the 200 gig option, at least when they're logged into their accounts.

There's also a possibility that this is merely a mistake we're looking at and no Google One plan will be nixed after all, but that seems highly unlikely.

Given its low monthly cost and relatively generous cloud storage allotment, the 200GB option always felt like a very solid value proposition and we'd certainly feel sorry if Google asked those on this plan to either upgrade or downgrade to a different service tier. For the time being, however, you shouldn't panic and go there with your speculation (even though we literally just did exactly that), at least until you hear the official word from the company.

There are hundreds of home security cameras on the market, ranging drastically in price, functionality and quality. With all the options, it can be hard to not become overwhelmed fast, especially when you're considering something as important as your home's safety. After CNET's years of testing home security cameras, we have some tips if you're on the hunt for a new one. Here are a few parameters to consider:

This, of course, is a big one. You don't want anyone peeping on your property or hacking into your camera. Wireless home security cameras can be more susceptible to hacking due to their connectivity to Wi-Fi networks and remote access, especially if you have poor router security. Wired home security cameras that don't use Wi-Fi at all are generally more secure. (Read more about the pros and cons of wired vs. wireless systems here.) And as we mentioned above, data breaches and security vulnerabilities can also be dangerous for your privacy, so it's important to consider a company's recent reputation.

One of the first things you'll need to consider is where you want to place your home security cameras. If you want your camera to be located outside, recording your porch or yard, you'll likely want an outdoor camera that's also weather resistant or features night vision.

While many cameras can be used interchangeably for indoor or outdoor purposes, some cameras are solely made for indoor usage, like the Wyze Cam Pan v2, so make sure you're buying cameras that can handle the outdoor elements.

Video quality should be a major consideration when buying a home security camera. In simplest terms, your camera won't be effective if the only footage being recorded is grainy and unreadable.

The higher the resolution, the better the video quality. Most home security cameras on the market now have 1,080p resolution, but others even have 2K resolution (like the Arlo Pro 4) or 1,536x1,536 resolution (like the Arlo Video Doorbell). Just remember, the higher the video quality, the more bandwidth it takes up and the more likely your camera is to experience lag times or glitches.

Field of view (usually provided diagonally) refers to how broad the camera's view is. Broader is generally better because it captures more space and makes it easier to spot activity. The average security camera tends to top out around 130 degrees, although some go beyond that. Pan and tilt features make the field of view less important since the camera can move around.

Battery and wireless cameras versus wired options are a matter of taste, since both types have pros and cons.

Wireless options are usually easier to install and operate, and often use cloud storage, so you can access your footage from anywhere. Wireless security cameras have their own power supply, so even during an internet or power outage, they can still record and save footage. One of the biggest disadvantages, though, is you'll need to manually change the batteries or charge them every so often, unless you get a solar-powered home security camera.

Wired cameras are hardwired to a steady connection, so they don't need to be recharged and can often boost a high-quality video resolution. They tend to be more reliable, secure and consistent in video quality while not requiring monthly cloud storage fees. On the negative side, wired home security cameras often need to be professionally installed and don't integrate with smart home systems like Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa.

Some Wired home security cameras (like the Google Nest Cam Indoor) typically have better video and audio quality.

Not all video storage is equal. You have two main options and picking one is up to your personal preference. There's cloud storage, which sends your video footage to a remote server to be saved, and local storage, which relies on a separate accessory or piece of hardware, usually a microSD card, to hold any footage you'd like to save. Usually, cloud storage requires a monthly fee.

When you're installing wireless home security cameras, keep in mind that the smart home camera you buy (and your security system as a whole) will only be as good as the quality of your Wi-Fi connection at the location where you plan to install it. So check your Wi-Fi speed before you drill holes in the walls or otherwise mess up your door frame, brick or siding for your home security camera. If the connection is spotty on your wireless security camera, you'll notice significant lag times, pixelation in the live feed and other Wi-Fi delays that make the video quality poor and home security cameras a pain to use.

Android’s New Photo Picker Now Works Better With Google Photos – How-To Geek

Even though Google Photos doesn't have unlimited storage anymore, it still lets you backup and save your photos, videos, and memories, so you don't have to keep them on your smartphone's local storage. Since the photos are uploaded to the cloud, though, you usually can't see them on your phone unless you actually open the Google Photos application. That's about to change.

Now, Google has added the ability for the photo picker to actually see images that are stored on cloud apps such as Google Photos. You can access both local and backed-up photos without switching between apps, streamlining the process of selecting images and videos. With albums from cloud storage readily available within the photo picker, organizing and finding media can be a lot eaiser, especially if you offload images and videos to the cloud frequently.

This feature is not limited to Google Photos, at least in theory. It's open to any cloud media app that qualifies for the pilot program, which could mean OneDrive, Dropbox, and other cloud storage services with photo backup might support the same feature. Google Photos is first in line being a Google app, but the pilot program is opening up to other non-Google apps before, perhaps, making the APIs public for everyone. There are some more niche services that could benefit from this, like NextCloud, so hopefully the functionality won't be closed off for forever.

The one catch here is that applications have to be updated to use the modern photo picker, which will then enable the cloud storage integration and other features. There are a few applications that have already updated, such as Chrome and other Google applications, but many others have not made the switch. The new cloud photos integration could help push applications to use the new picker, but in the meantime, you might not see it in your favorite apps.

The new cloud storage integration is rolling out with the February Google System Update to all devices running Android 12 or above. The modern photo picker technically works on Android 4.4 and newer, if the application has switched to it, but the cloud integration doesn't work that far back.

Snohomish County on its way to becoming the ‘Quantum Valley’ of the West – Lynnwood Times

BOTHELLMaryland-based quantum computing company IonQ celebrated the grand opening of its new 105,000 square foot building in Bothell on Thursday, February 15. This is the very first known dedicated quantum computing manufacturing facility in the United States and the latest, and greatest, next chapter for Snohomish County innovation and industry.

The new facility will house IonQs growing R&D manufacturing teams where about 80 employees are currently working as of now. Bothell was the chosen location of the companys West Coast expansion due to its proximity to several software, aerospace, and tech companies that could utilize its services.

The Seattle area obviously has a huge history of leadership in classical computing, with companies like Microsoft, and Amazon, but also Boeing and many others. So, it has a great DNA for technology but also manufacturing, said Peter Champan, IonQ CEO. Thats really the two things that we pull into manufacturing quantum computers. Its great to have a highly skilled and highly educated work force to pull from.

The State of Washington has the highest state concentration of tech workers in the country with about 350,000 jobs as of 2023, according to Sen. Maria Cantwells Office. The state also employs the highest number of people in emerging technology jobs such as artificial intelligence and quantum. Just recently GeekWire reported that Seattle was found to be the top city in the country for hiring elite software engineers, and one of the top cities in the world for this level of talent.

IonQ is a leader in quantum computing with the mission statement to build the worlds best quantum computers to solve the worlds most complex problems. Quantum computers are a revolutionary technology that has the potential to change how many businesses including artificial intelligence, security, pharmaceutical companies, aerospace, and more conduct its operations.

Unlike a conventional computer, which uses binary bits (typically ones and zeros) as its unit of information, quantum computers operate at a subatomic level, trapping atoms out of the atmosphere and, with specialized lasers, manipulates particles (such as photons and electrons) to use whats called a quantum bit (or qubit) to allow the particles to exist in more than one state at one time. The quantum computing industry has the potential to add thousands of new jobs here in the Pacific Northwest jobs at all skill levels, from technicians to software developers, said Sen. Cantwell. Our region is already known worldwide for our innovation and leadership. And this facility will continue to build on that We are becoming the Quantum Valley, if you will, of the United States.

Sen. Cantwell has been working hard to help industry and academia translate ideas developed in a lab into products and solutions for the American people. She helped authorize $20 billion for a new Tech Directorate program at the National Science Foundation to focus on translational science in 10 key developing areas, including quantum technology.

Also in attendance at Thursdays event was Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers, members of the Swiss embassy, and officials representing Microsoft and Amazon.

IonQ has pumped in around $20 million to its Bothell facility to upgrade its infrastructure within the last year. As of now, half of the buildingits lower levelhas been fully completed and is already undergoing manufacturing with the other half still under construction. Once completed the company will have gone from 6,500 square feet, working with just a handful of employees, to over 100,000 square feet with eventual plans to bring its data center from Maryland to Bothell in Snohomish County.

Founded in 2015 by quantum physicists Chris Monroe and Jungsang Kim, after 25 years of academic research and $1 million in seed funds from New Enterprise Associate, IonQ was able to raise $20 million from GV, Amazon Web Services, and NEA to build two of the worlds most accurate quantum computers. In 2019 the company began offering their quantum computers available via the cloud, through a partnership with Microsoft and Amazon Web Services.

In 2020 and 2021, IonQ built additional generations of high-performance quantum hardware, added Google Cloud Marketplace to its cloud partner roster and announced a series of collaborations and business partnerships with leading academic and commercial institutions.

On October 1st, 2021, IonQ began trading as IONQ on the New York Stock Exchange, making it the worlds first public pure-play quantum computing company.

Its quantum computer products include the Forte Enterprise, the Forte, the IonQ Aria, the IonQ Harmony, and the still in development AQ 64 IonQ Tempo which will have faster gate speeds, mid-circuit measurement, and 99.9% fidelity, all helping to unlock larger and more complex problem classes and deliver a faster time-to-solution, the company says.

Six years ago I read that NC State had established the very first Q Hub, as it was called, which is quantum hardware sponsored or supported by IBM, meaning that we could actually work with real hardware. That drew my curiosity, and in 2019 I went to the first Q Network meetings organized by IBM in New York. Ironically, the pandemic helped in that we all took classes online while sitting home.

Encryption is based on algorithms and factorization problems that cannot be solved easily within a reasonable amount of time, and were talking about 70,000 years just inconceivable to break a code. Quantum computers will easily break those codes that underlie encryption. That means that all the traffic that we consider to be safe on the internet and all the transactions that we think are safe through encryption are jeopardized.

Most financial institutions know that and are getting quantum ready. Thats the most obvious thing, but thats not only for financial institutions. Thats true for all the other things that go through internet connections.

There are other things, of course: the speed at which we trade, the speed at which we can derive formulas for portfolio allocation, pricing of derivative securities all are going to be affected by the computational speedups.

This started around 2019. Initially, it was organized by the Rethinc Labs, of which I am the research director of at the Kenan Institute. This was parallel to a series that was joined between NC State and Duke. They were organizing quantum-related webinars, except they did not cover financial sector applications. We now have a joint Duke, NC State and UNC webinar.

Ill give you two projects Im working on. One is solving what we call asset-pricing problems. How do you price a particular asset that has a particular payoff profile? Thats a very foundational question in finance. You buy a security or real estate property how do you price it? Ive been working on research on the potential exponential speedup of computing solutions to asset-pricing problems.

The other project involves combinatorial optimization, which requires matching of bids and asks people who want to buy versus people who want to sell. You want to figure out how you combine these different sides of the market. Quantum computers are good at solving combinatorial optimization problems and are better than classical computers.
