Unlocking the Airwaves: Illinois Bill Seeks Media Access to Encrypted Police Scanners – WspyNews

SPRINGFIELDIllinois state Rep. LaShawn K. Ford (D-Chicago) has introduced legislation which would require any law enforcement agency in Illinois which encrypts police scanner transmissions to provide real time access to those transmissions to accredited media in the state.

House Bill 4339amends the Public Records Act to require that any law enforcement agency that encrypts radio transmissions provide, by license or otherwise, access to those transmissions to FCC licensed broadcasters and accredited newspapers as defined in the Act.

Under the administration of former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, the Chicago Police Department instituted a program designed to encrypt police scanner transmissions across all police districts in the city.

I understand the desire to prevent members of the public from using real time police scanner information to commit crimes or to evade law enforcement, Rep. Ford said. However, the media has an obligation to report on events in a timely manner and its use of real time information from police scanners is essential.Blocking accredited media from real time access is counter to governmental transparency and does not lend itself to the original stated purpose of the encryption program.

Rep. Ford noted that his proposed legislation would apply to jurisdictions across Illinois.Several downstate law enforcement departments have also instituted encryption programs.

The Illinois Press Association and Illinois Broadcasters Association support the passage of the bill.

Self-destructing USB flash drive set to go on sale and while it comes without encryption, at least there’s no finger … – TechRadar

If you're the sort of person who needs to carry sensitive data around with you and worry about it falling into the wrong hands, you might be interested in a new USB flash drive with a self-destruct feature which is set to go on sale later this year.

The Ovrdrive USB, developed by Ryan Walker of Interrupt Labs, is a unique device that heats its flash chip to over 212 degrees Fahrenheit (100 degrees Celsius) as a security measure.

The first version of the Ovrdrive USB required wet fingers to activate the drive, a feature that has thankfully since been removed. It now instead requires a secret three-insertion process to unlock the data safely. If this process is not followed, the drive's partition remains hidden, making it appear broken (the drive was originally designed to self-destruct instead, but this proved too challenging for mass production).

Ovrdrive USB's self-destruct mechanism reverses the voltage supplied to the device, heating it to around 100 degrees Celsius. While this may not be hot enough to destroy the flash chips, users can add a compound (not supplied for obvious reasons) to ensure complete self-destruction.

Unlike other security-focused flash drives, the Ovrdrive USB does not encrypt its contents by default, making it legal in countries where encryption is banned. If you need added protection, you can easily encrypt the USB drive yourself using Windows' BitLocker or the open-source VeraCrypt.

The Ovrdrive USB is currently being crowdfunded on Crowd Supply, with a release date set for August 2024. It is priced at $69 with free US domestic shipping (or $12 international shipping) and is currently 104% funded with 22 days of the campaign remaining.

While the Ovrdrive USB is not a replacement for the security offered by cryptographic encryption, it is undeniably very cool, with a unique physical security feature that wouldn't look out of place in a Mission Impossible movie.

"Illegal to break encryption," the European Court of Human Rights rules – TechRadar

The European Court of Human Rights banned all legal efforts of weakening encryption of secure communications in Europe.

Encryption ensures the enjoyment of fundamental rights such as privacy and freedom of expression, the judgment reads, while helping citizens and businesses to defend themselves against abuses of information technologies. Hence, the ruling to outlaw legislations that could open up backdoors for criminals to exploit.

The decision was welcomed with enthusiasm by privacy experts that have long called the EU Commission to withdraw their CSAM-scanning proposal, known as Chat Control, which planned to enable authorities to scan all citizens' private communications to halt the spread of dangerous content.

"With this outstanding landmark judgement, the 'client-side scanning' surveillance on all smartphones proposed by the EU Commission in its Chat Control bill is clearly illegal. It would destroy the protection of everyone instead of investigating suspects," commented European Parliament and digital freedom advocate Patrick Breyer from Pirate Party.

"EU governments will now have no choice but to remove the destruction of secure encryption from their position on this proposalas well as the indiscriminate surveillance of private communications of the entire population," he added.

In October last year, the EU Parliament already reached ahistorical agreement which asked for the removal of the dangerous provision from theEU Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM)Scanning Proposal. Reiterating privacy as a fundamental right, also in that occasion the decision came to safeguard online security and encryption.

However, the Chat Control was still on the tableuntil now, at least.

Right from the start, tech companies using encryption to build softwareincluding VPN services and messaging apps providersargued that weakening encryption in order to catch criminals was a terrible idea.

VPN provider Mullvad VPN got pretty vocal last year to raise awareness of these risks. It sent hundreds of emails to both journalists and politicians, while even putting giant banners across airports and the streets of some European cities. "Mullvad is usually a very silent company. This is probably the first time we really got mad enough to speak out," Jan Jonsson, CEO at Mullvad, told me when the company began its campaign in March last year.

A group of experts wrote the umpteenth open letter less than a month ago, too, to warn that the proposed side-scanning "would negatively impact childrens privacy and security online, while also having dramatic unforeseen consequences on the EU cybersecurity landscape, creating an ineffective administrative burden."

Well, all these efforts have now been rewarded.

"Secure encryption saves lives," said again Breyer. "It is a scandal that the EU Councils latest draft position still envisages the destruction of secure encryption. We Pirates will now fight even harder for our digital privacy of correspondence!"

The European Court of Human Rights yesterday banned a general weakening of secure end-to-end encryption. The judgement argues that encryption helps citizens and companies to protect themselves against hacking, theft of identity and personal data, fraud and the unauthorised disclosure of confidential information. Backdoors could also be exploited by criminal networks and would seriously jeopardise the security of all users' electronic communications. There are other solutions for monitoring encrypted communications without generally weakening the protection of all users, the Court held.[1] The judgement cites using vulnerabilities in the targets software or sending an implant to targeted devices as examples.

Member of the European Parliament and digital freedom fighter Patrick Breyer (Pirate Party) comments:

Secure encryption saves lives. Without encryption, we can never be sure whether our messages or photos are being disclosed to people we don't know and can't trust. So-called 'client-side scanning' would either make our communications fundamentally insecure, or European citizens would no longer be able to use Whatsapp or Signal at all, because the providers have already contemplated that they would discontinue their services in Europe. It is a scandal that the EU Council's latest draft position still envisages the destruction of secure encryption. We Pirates will now fight even harder for our digital privacy of correspondence!"

Background: The EU Commission and an industrial network of surveillance authorities are calling for generally searching private communications using error-prone technology, including on end-to-end encrypted messengers, for indications of illegal content. This could only be implemented by undermining secure end-to-end encryption. The majority of EU governments support the initiative, but a blocking minority is preventing a decision. The EU interior ministers want to discuss the bill again at the beginning of March. Under massive pressure from Pirates and civil society, the EU Parliament has rejected the destruction of secure encryption and indiscriminate chat control. However, this is only the starting position for possible negotiations with the EU Council, once it agrees on a position. Meta has announced that it will start encrypting direct messages via Facebook and Instagram in the course of this year and discontinue its current voluntary chat control surveillance on these messages. Nevertheless, the EU is in the process of extending the authorisation for voluntary chat control.

DuckDuckGo’s privacy browser adds built-in password syncing – The Verge

DuckDuckGo has added a new Sync & Backup feature to its privacy-first browser that will keep passwords, bookmarks, and favorites constant across all of your devices without setting up an account. Falling right in line with its usual claims that it wont track you or collect your data, the company says that the data is end-to-end encrypted and that it cannot access your data at any time.

DuckDuckGo writes that data should sync across most Windows, Mac, Android, and iPhone devices, including what youve imported from browsers like Chrome. Setting up the sync involves scanning a QR code if youre using a mobile device or entering an alphanumeric code if youre using a computer.

According to DuckDuckGo, you can also set up single device backup and sync. And as with authentication apps, the browser gives you a PDF with a recovery code that you can use to create an encryption key to get to your data if something happens to your devices.

This addresses one of the main roadblocks to switching to DuckDuckGos browser from one that uses your data for its own ends like Chrome. Its easy to say you want to use a privacy-respecting browser, but passwords are still king of the mountain, and the internets security situation demands that each one of them be totally unique. Password managers are helpful, but with this update, you no longer have to connect an outside password manager to DuckDuckGo (or track your passwords manually) if you want your passwords synced.

DuckDuckGo still doesnt support passkeys, though. Given that they have a real shot at replacing passwords in the not-too-distant future, the company still has its work cut out for it if it wants to mount a viable challenge to browsers from titans like Google, Microsoft, or Apple.

One of Amazons biggest focuses is in cloud computing, where the companys Amazon Web Services is a market leader. The online tech and retail giant has also built in-house chips to power the cloud and has partnered with OpenAI rival Anthropic on infrastructure that enables large-scale AI modeling.

Deepak Singh, an AWS vice president, talked to Quartz about how generative AI is affecting Amazon. Here are some highlights from the interview.

Amazon has been using machine learning for a long time, such as the robotics in its fulfillment centers or its cashierless Amazon Go stores, Singh said. There are two areas where Amazon has invested early when it comes to generative AI, Singh said. One is providing the cloud infrastructure for those building AI models. Last year, for example, Amazon launched Bedrock, a service that helps AWS users build and scale AI models. The other area is providing features to help AWS customers build their generative AI applications faster.

In other words, rather than being a leader in whats known as the large-language models that power generative AI products like chatbots, Amazon is focused on providing the infrastructure to house these AI models.

Generative AI very directly was enabled because the cloud exists, Singh said.

Both [Amazon CEO Andy Jassy] and [AWS CEO Adam Selipsky] like to say that we are early in a marathon, he added. We are learning new lessons every day about what large-language models are capable of right now.

If youre a software developer, and especially if youre a new software developer, chances are youre using generative AI as part of your day-to-day experience, Singh said. Large-language models, or LLMs, are good at coding in part because theres a lot of open-source code out there in the world that AI systems can learn from, he said.

Singh added that Amazon employees are starting to use the companys own internal AI chatbots to write marketing copy.

When AWS started, I still had to continue to answer a lot of questions like, why is the bookstore building [cloud] infrastructure? Singh said. You know, I havent heard that one in 15 years now, or 14 years or something like that. Its been a long time. At the same time, companies were more hesitant to migrate to the cloud, which helps businesses run their websites and applications.

But now, Singh said your biggest most stodgy bank has jumped right into the deep end [of generative AI].

But again, he added, I think because theyve adopted the cloud over the last several years, its been easier for them to do that.

Some of the world's largest cloud computing firms, including Alphabet, Amazon, and Cloudflare, have found a way to save billions by extending the lifespan of their servers - a move expected to significantly reduce depreciation costs, increase net income, and contribute to their bottom lines.

Alphabet, Google's parent company, started this trend in 2021 by extending the lifespan of its servers and networking equipment. By 2023, the company decided that both types of hardware could last six years before needing to be replaced. This decision led to the company saving $3.9 billion in depreciation and increasing net income by $3.0 billion last year.

These savings will go towards Alphabet's investment in technical infrastructure, particularly servers and data centers, to support the exponential growth of AI-powered services.

Like Alphabet, Amazon also recently completed a "useful life study" for its servers, deciding to extend their working life from five to six years. This change is predicted to contribute $900 million to net income in Q1 of 2024 alone.

Cloudflare followed a similar path, extending the useful life of its service and network equipment from four to five years starting in 2024. This decision is expected to result in a modest impact of $20 million.

Tech behemoths are facing increasing costs from investing in AI and technical infrastructure, so any savings that can made elsewhere are vital. The move to extend the life of servers isn't just a cost cutting exercise however, it also reflects the continuous advancements in hardware technology and improvements in data center designs.

Docker Build Cloud: Using Cloud Compute and Cache to Decrease Image Build Times – InfoQ.com

Docker recently announced the general availability of their cloud-based container image builder, Docker Build Cloud. Docker Build Cloud offers a remote shared cache and native builders for AMD64 and ARM64 CPU architectures, with the goal of "improving collaboration" and decreasing image build times.

Docker is a virtualisation technology that provides a loosely isolated environment for an application at runtime. Each environment, called a container, has to be built prior to its execution on a host machine and is distributed as an immutable collection of files called an Image. Each file within the collection is referred to as a layer and is a compressed set of changes to the filesystem. The Docker Builder is responsible for converting a series of instructions in a Dockerfile to an image.

Since Dockers launch in 2013, containers have become a ubiquitous mechanism to achieve the vision of build once, run anywhere, a notion originally made popular by Sun Microsystems to highlight the cross-platform operability of the Java language. A key enabler of this success within the Linux ecosystem has been the use of QEMU, an open-source machine emulator and virtualizer. While this allowed users to build images on a host of one CPU architecture, for example, ARM32v7, and run them on others, it also became a pain point due to the relatively slow emulation process. In late 2019, Dockerintroduced Remote Builders as a mechanism to resolve this challenge.

With Remote Builders, users could register a host machine accessible over mutual transport layer security (mTLS) or secure shell (SSH) as a node for building images. By registering nodes of different target architectures and referencing them during the build stage, users could now build once, or multiple times at once, and run native images without emulation. The major downside of Remote Builders at the time of the functionalitys release was the requirement of its users to set up and maintain a fleet of builder nodes. Docker Build Cloud aims to removethis operational burden by offering them as a service.

Docker Build Cloud nodes run as Amazon EC2 instances with dedicated EBS volumes. EC2 specification begins with 8vCPUs and 16GB of RAM for customers on Personal and Pro plans, and goes up to 16vCPU with 32GB RAM for Team and Business customers. All Docker plans include a limited number of build minutes shared across an organization, with Docker Build Cloud Team sold as an add-on starting from $5 per user per month. The Docker Build Cloud add-on offers an additional 200 build minutes per user and a 200GB shared cache across the organization. A rough cost estimate of an equivalent remote builder configuration self-hosted on AWS gave a monthly running cost of $850, which suggests that Docker Build Cloud, at $5 per user, is priced favorably towards teams with less than 170 engineers.

Leonardo: kick off for the project of the first Space Cloud System for Defense – EDR Magazine

Rome, 19/02/2024 Supercomputers, artificial intelligence, and cloud are aboard a constellation of cyber-secure satellites orbiting the Earth this is the objective of the Military Space Cloud Architecture (MILSCA) study project assigned to Leonardo by the Italian Ministry of Defense (through the contractual agency Teledife), as part of the National Military Research Plan (PNRM).

For the first time in Europe, similar to what happens with the terrestrial cloud, the project intends to define a space architecture capable of providing government and national Armed Forces with high-performance computing and storage capacity directly in space.

The system, designed with integrated cyber security models, will guarantee greater speed and flexibility in the processing and sharing information. The Space Cloud, which will be tested by creating a digital twin of the architecture, will be able to store over 100 Terabytes of data generated on Earth and in space on board each constellation satellite. It can perform processing with a power exceeding 250 TFLOPS (250 thousand billion operations per second) at single precision, adopting advanced algorithms which use artificial intelligence, machine learning techniques, and extensive data analysis. They can also communicate and exchange data autonomously with other satellites.

A cyber-secure supercomputer and archive system in space will guarantee users access to strategic data such as communication, earth observation, and navigation data, anywhere, even in the most remote places, and at any time. Furthermore, a Space Cloud system significantly reduces data processing times, which is processed directly in orbit, providing real-time information, and thus facilitating multi-domain and multi-nation operations. The transmission networks will be left free for other connections thanks to the only transfer of information of interest to Earth. In addition, storing data in orbit will also represent a useful back-up of the Earth centers, which are most exposed to natural disasters.

The project sees Leonardo at the forefront with the participation of the joint ventures Telespazio (67% Leonardo, 33% Thales) and Thales Alenia Space (67% Thales, 33% Leonardo). With a duration of 24 months, the study includes a first phase for defining the architecture and a second phase that will end with developing a digital twin of the satellite with the HPC and the multi-constellation satellite terminal demonstrator. The goal is to simulate the different application scenarios in a digital environment. These tests will be carried out thanks to Leonardos supercomputer, the davinci-1, among the first aerospace and defense HPCs in the world in terms of computing power and performance. The study will be a precursor to a further experimental phase, which, if confirmed, will involve the deployment in orbit of a demonstrative constellation of satellites.

Space Cloud is a hi-tech and multi-domain project, which takes advantage of Leonardos combined capabilities in data acquisition, management, and cyber protection, as well as artificial intelligence and supercomputing with the HPC davinci-1; the development of MILSCA is the first project in the Space domain that fits within the growth guidelines of Leonardos new Industrial Plan.

In a multi-domain scenario, management, security, and rapid exchange of an ever-increasing amount of data, much of which is tactical, become strategic elements for the countrys defense. We will be the first in Europe to develop a Space Cloud project, demonstrating feasibility and benefits deriving from the use of an architecture of this type and enabling a new paradigm of cloud & edge computing, said Simone Ungaro, Leonardos Chief Innovation Officer. Leonardos know-how will allow the development of a Space Cloud network to contribute to digitalization and technological innovation processes, responding to future challenges to guarantee the needs of government and national Armed Forces.

The Space Cloud for Defense project also sets the basis for future uses to support civil Earth observation programs and space exploration missions to the Moon and Mars, which could benefit from an in-orbit cloud computing architecture to download and process data more quickly.
