I recently saw a download that addresses Three Ways The Cloud Can Help Manage Healthcares Digital Data Tsunami (For the moment, I thought perhaps the cloud was finally getting the attention it deserves for healthcare data storage. Then I saw the following in an email on Googles initiative to remove medical records data from its searches.

The first article relates to Philips Healthcares experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS), while the second relates to Googles web services. On the one hand, the first publication implies that cloud storage is cost effective, secure, and scalable. The second publication addresses concerns with respect to patient information and the risk of identity theft.

In light of the recent WannaCry Ransomware attack (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WannaCry_ransomware_attack), security concerns are elevated with respect to sensitive patient information. Controlling information behind a healthcare providers firewall is one thing, but managing it in the cloud might be quite another. Perhaps there is some difference between a private versus public cloud, but given the rash of healthcare provider attacks involving the WannaCry Ransomware, there is probably genuine concern with respect to remote data storage.

Such concern has probably caused cloud service providers to double down on security provisions, and they are probably safer now than in the past. Still, it speaks to having an effective strategy in mind when planning to use cloud services. It probably doesnt hurt to have a contingency plan, as well as a response plan should there be an attack involving patient data.

There are many good reasons to consider the cloud for data storage, as demonstrated by the first article, especially the data tsunami resulting from the expansion of electronic medical records. One challenge facing healthcare providers is what information to send to the cloud. Are patient document records or images better handled in the cloud? Given that images represent substantially more data, they might be considered a better option, as they would place greater strains on internal infrastructure. One key factor to consider are the SLA (service line agreement) requirements required. Factors such as the bandwidth of the connection, recall demand, volume of transactions, reliability, security risk, etc. must be considered in matching requirements with available performance.

Regardless of what data is sent to the cloud, there needs to be a clear understanding of who owns the data, and a minimum cost to retrieve that data should storage plans change. I am reminded of one facility I have worked with that felt as if they were being held at ransom by the vendor when it came time to retrieve the data into another solution.

With ever-increasing demands on data such as analytics, making smart use of all available storage options will continue to be a key challenge for healthcare IT professionals.

News UK has revamped its backup systems with Zadara cloud storageas part of an ongoing cloud-first push, saving around 40% on the potential cost of in-house hardware and software.

The company publisher of titles that include The Sun and The Times replaced Symantec NetBackup backup software with Commvault and ditched its ageing StorageTek SL3000 tape library.

Head of infrastructure Iain Caldwell said the existing backup system had experienced nightly job failures.

We had multiple servers crashing, jobs taking twice as long, he said. The whole backup solution was a mess, so we decided to start from scratch, said Caldwell.

The company put out a request for proposaland looked at all the leading backup software suppliers, eventually choosing Commvault, which it paired with Zadara cloud storage.

We didnt want to put more hardware in our datacentres and wanted to retire the behemoth of a tape library. It was the size of a Mini, said Caldwell.

He said the company also looked at Amazon S3 and Google Cloud, as well as using commodity hardware, but eventually opted for Zadara because it was very affordable; hard to ignore.

Zadara Storage is a software-defined storage product that can be used on-premise as well as off-site. It provides file, block and object access, and customers can choose cache and memory capacity, drive type, Raid levels and disaster recovery options, with cloud features such as multi-tenancy and elasticity of performance and service duration.

News UK has deployed Zadara VPSA cloud-based storage arrays at three locations two in London, one in Manchester.

Caldwell said the key benefits were ease of deployment and reconfiguration, solid data protection and reduced costs compared with equipping an in-house datacentre.

We get five nines availability, and a quick response if we need to implement something new; you can expect to have something done in four or five hours. Weve only had to be in touch a couple of times and the support has been fantastic, he said.

Caldwell estimated that by opting for a cloud-based target for backups the company had saved around 40% on the costs it would have incurred for hardware renewals and software licences.

Microsoft signs cloud-computing partnership with Box – The Seattle Times

Microsoft and Box, which builds on-demand file storage and sharing tools, will work on new links between their products and jointly sell some tools.

Microsoft and file-storage startup Box have signed a deal to sell each others products, the latest blurring of the lines between friends and rivals in the growing business of cloud-computing.

Box builds web-based file storage and management tools, services that compete head-to-head with Microsofts own OneDrive and Sharepoint.

Despite that rivalry, the companies have agreed to jointly sell Box services and elements of Microsofts Azure cloud-computing platform, they said on Tuesday.

The companies say their engineering teams are also working on building more links between their products, including adding Azure to the Box Zones program. That effort lets Box customers opt to store their content in specific areas of Azures massive global network of data centers. (Box Zones already includes Azure rivals Amazon Web Services and IBM).

Cloud-computing has made some partnerships that would have seemed bizarre in the world of out-of-the-box business software of a generation ago. Microsoft, during its dominance of the personal computer heyday, developed a reputation for pushing customers to use its range of products at all costs, and shunning those developed by others.

But as the company prioritizes growth in its Azure cloud-computing platform, which enables other companies to build services on Microsofts network of data centers and rented software services, the Redmond firm has abandoned some of its scorched earth tactics. The company, analysts say, is betting that customers who plug into the cloud will demand that the products they use work well with those of other technology vendors.

Box, based in Redwood City, Calif., began as a startup founded by a pair of college students in Mercer Island. The company is among a slate of startups born in the cloud era that has thrived by building on-demand, web-based tools that replicate or improve on programs companies used to run from their own servers. Box held an initial public offering in 2015, and had sales of $425 million during the most recent 12-month period.

American Airlines moves consumer facing apps to the cloud with IBM’s help – Cloud Tech

American Airlines is moving critical applications, including its customer-facing mobile app and check-in kiosks, to IBMs cloud, the latter has announced.

The move builds upon the two companies partnership, first announced last year, with the airline also moving workloads and tools such as its Cargo customer website to the IBM cloud.

The two companies have agreed to rewrite applications to IBMs cloud platform as a service (PaaS), as well as establishing a cloud-native architecture. American Airlines will work with IBM Global Services to help create applications through a micro-services architecture, DevOps, agile methodology, and lean development.

In selecting the right cloud partner for American, we wanted to ensure the provider would be a champion of Cloud Foundry and open source technologies so we dont get locked down by proprietary solutions, said Daniel Hendry, VP customer technology and enterprise architecture at American. We also wanted a partner that would offer us the agility to innovate at the organisational and process levels and have deep industry expertise with security at its core.

Microsoft and Box Ink Yet Another Cloud Partnership – Fortune

It doesn't look like Box has ever met a cloud provider it doesn't like. On Tuesday, the company, which sells cloud-based file storage and synchronization services to businesses, named Microsoft Azure as a "strategic cloud platform."

In this case, that means Box ( box ) and Microsoft ( msft ) will both sell "Box on Azure" to business customers around the world, according to a Box spokeswoman. She added that this is the first time Box is "going to market" with one of the big four public cloud providers. That may be, but it certainly has cozied up to all of them.

Microsoft Azure is known as a public clouda huge aggregation of servers, storage, and networkingowned and operated by Microsoft at data centers worldwide. It sells those resources to many customers. Azure competes with Amazon ( amzn ) Web Services, Google ( googl ) Cloud Platform, and IBM ( ibm ) SoftLayer in this booming market, driven by many businesses that don't want to invest more in their own data centers

Box started out 12 years in the pre-cloud era and so fielded its own data centers. In the intervening years, it's partnered with AWS and other cloud providers in many ways. Box CEO Aaron Levie once told Fortune that if Box had started later, it would have stayed out of the data center business altogether.

Two years ago, Box launched a partnership with IBM under which it uses IBM cloud data centers in some regions where customer data must remain in the country of origin. It subsequently announced a similar deal with AWS to use that cloud's facilities in Canada and Australia.

Box already works with Microsoft to integrate Box storage with Microsoft Office 365 applications. And, for the record, Microsoft OneDrive cloud storage competes with Box storage. So this is a complicated world with companies partnering in some arenas and competing in others.

Microsoft, like Amazon and IBM, has been wooing third-party Internet software providerscompanies like Salesforce ( crm ) , Tableau ( data ) , Workday ( wday ) , and yes, Boxto run their respective public cloud data centers. The competition is fierce.

Last year, when asked by Fortune whether it is hard for a company like Box to rely on big cloud providers that also compete with his company, he replied: "You know what's harder? Building data centers!"

From Word Processors to Cloud Computing: 40 Years of Tech at Department of the Navy – Nextgov

In the late 1970s, a young graduate from The George Washington University armed with an electrical engineering degree and a passion for computer science accepted a job at a Department of the Navy organization called the Naval Facilities Engineering Command. Now, over 40 years later, that graduate serves as one of the organization's deputy chief information officers and credits his longevity in the NAVFAC organization to simply keeping busy.

I kept finding challenging things to do, Tony Joyce says.

His day-to-day responsibilities includebriefings and updates, conversations and staff meetings, and other supervisory chores. Joyce'steam manages or supports portals and records management data sets, portfolios of software and business systems, software licenses, distribution, testing and certifications. The team alsomaintains oversight of a data center and a mainframe financial application, approves procurement requests, and coordinatesrigorous investment decision management certifications.

"On a given day, I may be working on preparations for IT system financial audits, data center consolidation, cloud hosting and migration, budgets and spending plans, or business system acquisition documentation," Joyce said.

Nextgov caught up with Joyce to chat about how technology has evolved over the years and where its been most transformative in government.

Nextgov: Looking back at the decades, what have been the most transformational technologies in government?

Tony Joyce: Computers. Thinking about what was available when I started, 300 baud modems and original IBM PCs, things like that, and compare to what we have now, its just an incredible improvement and the sophistication we have now isnt anything I think anyone knew was possibleit was short of science fiction.

Nextgov: What were some challenges you encountered when implementing a new technology back then?

Joyce: One of my early efforts was word processing, so I bought one of the first dedicated word processors and expanded that to 15 or so centrally, one of each in our regional offices to do specifications. Before that, we were using 3270 emulatorsstraight up text editing specifications that were 50-page documents. Trying to do that over rather flaky networks in those days was really difficult. But it was better than doing it on a typewriter.

Deciding to get it, train people, work out how to use it, and try to work out some consistency in that, was probably the biggest challenge. Some people were afraid of the technology, but most of all, I think, is that people were afraid of change. That still is the case. Doing something substantially different is difficult for most people.

Nextgov: What technology came after word processing that you had to address?

Joyce: The next one I was involved with after that was computer graphics: CAD, CAM and mapping, which were very new at the same. The difficulty there was buying it: It took years to get the specifications. The acquisition process remains one of the most difficult parts of the business.

Nextgov: Youve been an early adopter of technology. So,of which technology did you think, "This is going to change the world?"

Joyce: Im not sure there was one; I keep looking for something exciting, new ways to do things better.

Nextgov: So, whats the most exciting tech you work with today?

Joyce: I think cloud computing is probably the most exciting one. If its done right, it has enormous potential. Were just standing upour first Amazon-hosted environment. If we get it right, the promise of being able to easily modify and scale is immense.

Even with cloud, I expect there to be certain limitations. But if we can capture most of that in how we do things and then emulate how Amazon and Google are providing robust software services at incredible scale. Ill use our analytics as an example. Our current on-premise stack and many of the queries against our analytical database take 20, 40 an hour or two to run. Being able to scale that query and run 1,000 processes to do that job in a minute as opposed to an hour.

Nextgov: What do you see on the horizon as the most important technologies to the Department of the Navy?

Joyce: I think data analytics in a variety of forms. Knowing what your cash position is in your budget at all times is a major hurdle and we havent gotten there yet. The other technology that will probably change things radically is intelligent, well-structured text recognition [to]being able to effectively search through half million documents that I have in our portals.

Right now, the best technology we have is some sort of keyword, which means you got to apply metadata, and building that metadata is a huge burden on people, which means it doesnt get done. So text mining in the government will have great promise because the government even more so than the private sector organizations operates off paper.
