Sungard Availability Services Makes Cloud Computing Easier with Managed Services for AWS – PR Newswire (press release)

"AWS has done an amazing job of leading a sea change in programmable infrastructure," said Josh Crowe, CTO, Sungard AS. "Through that change, customers continue to look to us to help solve their infrastructure challenges across their existing estate of systems and hyperscale clouds. We provide them with the tools and expertise to deploy their new apps and migrate existing workloads onto AWS so they can focus their attention on their core business."

Sungard AS takes a programmatic approach to leveraging AWS to ensure consistency and reliability. For example, when creating new accounts, the security and configuration is implemented automatically. An automated environment confirms that customers' workloads are secure and performing properly inside of AWS and also in Sungard AS data centers, including our newest data center in Santa Clara, California.

Managed Cloud AWS is intended to integrate easily with other Sungard AS services. One size does not fit all when it comes to the cloud. According to IDC Worldwide IT Predictions 2017, some 85 percent of organizations are adopting a multi-cloud strategychoosing different clouds for different applications, such as a combination of private clouds, hosted private clouds or public cloud environments across different providers. Sungard AS can meet the needs of these complex environments, providing managed services not just inside of AWS but also in Sungard AS data centers and even, potentially, at customer sites.

"Customers are looking for a partner to help them across their entire IT deployment," continued Crowe. "Not all applications are ready to move to the cloud, so most companies find themselves in a hybrid IT environment. Sungard AS has the expertise to help companies determine the right course of action for each application and create a robust, available and recoverable infrastructure for both cloud and legacy applications."

AWS provides a highly reliable, scalable, low-cost infrastructure platform in the cloud that powers hundreds of thousands of businesses in 190 countries around the world. With data center locations in the U.S., Europe, Brazil, Singapore, Japan, and Australia, AWS allows customers across all industries to take advantage of low cost, agility and instant elasticity, openness and flexibility, and security. Millions of customers already use AWS products and solutions.

Sungard AS Managed Cloud AWS is available in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

How innovation accelerators will drive global ICT growth – Cloud Tech

Emerging technologies, such as IoT, robotics, and augmented reality or virtual reality (AR/VR), will drive the next wave of growth in the information and communications technology (ICT) industry, increasing the overall opportunity to $5.5 trillion by 2020, according to the latest market study by International Data Corporation (IDC).

The IDC forecast illustrates that the ICT sector is dependent upon new technology innovation for growth, as traditional business technology revenue streams begin to decline in the face of cannibalization, substitution, and the shift to cloud-based computing solutions.

New technologies, which IDC calls "Innovation Accelerators," will provide almost $7.4 trillion in aggregate industry revenue from 2015-2020 -- adding $1.8 trillion to the overall size of the industry in terms of annual sales by the end of the forecast period.

A large proportion of this growth will come from the fast-growing IoT market, which is forecast to reach almost $1.3 trillion in annual revenue by 2020, of which more than $1 trillion represents new opportunity outside of traditional technology market categories.

According to the IDC assessment, robotics, augmented reality or virtual reality, security, cognitive systems or artificial intelligence, and 3D printing will contribute the rest of this fast-growing portion of the ICT market.

"The traditional ICT market of data center infrastructure, client devices, software, services, and telecommunications is now growing at a rate not much faster than real GDP and increasingly resembles a mature sector of the overall economy," said Stephen Minton, vice president at IDC.

That being said, between 2015 and 2020, overall ICT Spending - excluding the Innovation Accelerators - will see a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of just 1 percent in constant currency terms. Including the Innovation Accelerators, ICT spending will increase by 5 percent over the same period. In total, the Innovation Accelerators will post a CAGR of 18 percent.

Asia-Pacific (excluding Japan) represents the largest market for Innovation Accelerators, forecast to reach more than $600 billion by 2020, followed closely by the United States. The fastest growth over the same period will be in Latin America, Central & Eastern Europe, and the Middle East and Africa.

"Device sales are now dominated by mobile devices and cloud service providers represent a growing proportion of all infrastructure hardware and software sales, while big data and analytics are at the heart of the fastest-growing opportunities. Meanwhile, growth in the telecom market is already entirely dependent on mobile," added Minton.

With public cloud services still growing at a double-digit rate, cloud computing will continue to cannibalise traditional spending on infrastructure, software, and IT services. Big data and analytics is also still expanding at a double-digit rate of growth and is forecast to see a 12 percent CAGR between 2015 and 2020.

Public cloud services and big data and analytics will each provide more than $200 billion in annual revenue by 2020. Meanwhile, the explosion in smartphone sales over the past few years and the ongoing growth of mobile data services means that overall mobility offerings are already valued at more than $1.5 trillion in annual sales.

Nvidia, Baidu expand AI partnership to include cloud GPUs and self-driving cars – GeekWire

Baidus Silicon Valley research lab (Baidu Photo)

Baidu plans to announce a sweeping expansion of its partnership with graphics chip maker Nvidia on Wednesday, bringing Nvidias latest chips into Baidus cloud services for artificial intelligence research and optimizing Baidus deep learning system.

The two companies have been working together on AI-related projects for a few years now, and the new agreement, scheduled to be announced during the Baidu Create 2017 AI developer conference, expands on much of that existing work.

Baidu is the Google of China, with over 75 percent of that countrys internet search market share and hundreds of millions of active users for other internet services it offers, including public cloud computing.

Its also one of the worlds leading researchers in artificial intelligence, a division that until recently was led by former Stanford professor and AI expert Andrew Ng. Former Microsoft search and AI expert Qi Lu is now the president and chief operating officer at Baidu, and the company is expected to challenge rivals like Google, Facebook, and Microsoft in artificial intelligence research for years to come.

For its part, Nvidias GPUs (graphics processing units) are being snapped up left and right by AI researchers to run their models, and are also offered by all the major public cloud providers as a service to their customers. Google is mounting a challenge with its Tensor Processing Units, but Nvidia has a lot of momentum on its side.

We see AI transforming really every industry, and our strategy is to help democratize AI everywhere, said Ian Buck, vice president and general manager of accelerated computing at Nvidia, in a briefing last week.

The new Nvidia-AI partnership consists of four segments.

Artificial intelligence services are expected to be the next big area of competition for public cloud providers. There are only a handful of companies in the world that can afford to do leading-edge AI research, and most of those companies also happen to be among the few who can afford to invest in the massive computing power that enables the public cloud.

As Amazon Web Services Swami Sivasubramanian put it at our GeekWire Cloud Tech Summit last month, AI research concepts have been long been discussed, but what has accelerated adoption of it is that we have specialized compute infrastructure, such as GPUs, specialized CPUs, FPGAs (field programmable gate arrays), you name it. In this new market for chips, Nvidia is in the drivers seat.

Microsoft could lay off ‘thousands’ as it focuses more on cloud services – The Verge

Microsoft reorganized its global sales force today to heighten its focus on selling cloud services instead of standalone pieces of software, according to The Wall Street Journal. The reorganization, just the latest in a series of structural changes the company has undergone since former CEO Steve Ballmer resigned and Satya Nadella took over in 2014, wont immediately result in layoffs. Yet the WSJ reports that thousands of jobs could be cut down the line as a result of the sales shuffle.

This doesnt appear like it will have a huge impact on how Microsoft does business on a day-to-day basis. Since the appointment of Nadella, the former head of Microsofts cloud division, the company has put more and more resources toward building out its Azure cloud computing platform and selling software subscriptions to businesses. This is all part of a steady shift away from one-time software licenses for products like Windows and Office. Microsoft is still playing catch up against Amazon, with the massive success of its AWS business, and now trying to stave off competition from Google and its growing cloud division.

Microsoft says it will now focus on two distinct areas: big enterprise customers, and then small to medium-sized businesses. Its not exactly clear what changes are in the pipeline, but an email from Judson Althoff, Microsofts executive vice president of worldwide commercial business, says sales reorganization is designed to align the right resources for the right customer at the right time. The magnitude of the potential layoffs is unclear, but the WSJ says they will likely occur in offices all around the globe.

What is Bitcoin ABC? – The Merkle

Scaling Bitcoin will happen sooner or later. The only question right now is how different teams of developers plan to accomplish this. There are different camps trying to make this happen, either through a softor a hard fork. One of the latest proposals trying to push for a Bitcoin hard fork goes by the name of Bitcoin ABC. It is an interesting proposal, which suggestsan adjustable blocksize cap.

Introducing a Bitcoin hard fork solution is always a contentious proposal. There are quite a few differences between a hard fork and asoft fork. In most cases a hard fork has a greaterchance of causing a network split, which is the last thing Bitcoin needs right now. Despite the risk, we currentlyhave a few Bitcoin UAHF proposals competing for community traction.

The latest project to gain some momentumis Bitcoin ABC. The ABC part stands for Adjustable Blocksize Cap, which indicates users can determine their preferred blocksize accordingly. This feature will be appreciated by both miners and users alike. However, this maycause issues for people dealing with slower internet connections or internet data caps. It appears the maximum block size of this proposal is 16MB, although that is only a temporary placeholder.

Certain aspects about Bitcoin ABC will interest some people and infuriate others. For example, Bitcoin ABC will not support replace-by-fee, whichhas been a popular solution to avoiding Bitcoin network congestion. In theory, a larger block size will be a more effective way to avoid paying high fees, but it may still warrant the use of replace-by-fee. Not supporting this solution is rather strange.

Additionally, Bitcoin ABC has no plans to activate Segregated Witness whatsoever. That should not come as a big surprise to many people. A large part of the Bitcoin community is in favor of seeing SegWit activate, but stillwant nothing to do with it. Moving away from SegWit is also in line with Bitmains contingency plan, which was introduced several weeks ago. A user-activated hard fork without SegWit makes sense for this particular part of the community.

It is possible Bitcoin ABC is one of the three UAHF implementations that Bitmainreferred to in their infamous blog post. This has not been officially confirmed by either party, although many suspect this is the case. The Bitcoin ABC developers are in contact with miners, as well as Jihan Wu and Haipo Yang. This seems to virtually confirm Bitcoin ABC is endorsed by them, evenwithout all the specifics of the program being available.

It appears Bitcoin ABC has the support of various mining pools, but the group behind the proposalseems hesitant to confirm or deny which pools. According to a recent Reddit post, it is up to the pools to publicly announce their intentions. It will be interesting to see which if any pools come forward in support of Bitcoin ABC. We can expect more specifications over the coming weeks and it will be interesting to see if this UAHF solution can truly contend with other proposed solutions.

Bitcoin Transaction Backlog Reaches Lowest Point in Months – The Merkle

The Bitcoin mempool is always atopic of debate and controversy. Since the mempool contains transactions waiting for confirmations, it isoften used to determine whether or not the network suffers from congestion. Currently, the Bitcoin mempool has been far emptier than it has for the past few months. There are many theories for the mempools recent lack of congestion and this article will go over some of them.

The Bitcoin mempoolis often a good gauge of the Bitcoin networks overall health. A mempool filling up slowly means there is a backlog related to network transactions awaiting confirmations. Usuallythere are around 30,000 Bitcoin transactions waiting for confirmations. They need to queue since only a certain amount of transactions will fit in one block andnew blocks on the Bitcoin network are only generated once every ten minutes.

Thenumber of unconfirmed transactions is less than half of what it normally is (at the time of writing). With under 10,000 pending transfers, some are confused by the recent dip in mempool numbers. However, the statistics indicate there are still 3.51 Bitcoin transactions every second, which is quite a healthy number. This suggests that the number of transactions and users are still withinnormal levels.

Looking at the Blockchain.info statistics, wesee the number of transactions is going down slightly. This trend started in June of 2017 and it seems to be snowballing. The number of transactions excluding long transaction chains is almost cut in half. This seems to indicate there is less blockchain bloat going on right now. The Bitcoin network has seen several spam attacks over the past year. It seems those nefarious methods have finally come to an end for now.

What is rather interesting is how it appears the number of Ethereum transactions is increasing. One reason may bethe influx of popular cryptocurrency ICOs. So it is probablynot a sign of people switching from Bitcoin to Ethereum. A lot of people want to invest in cryptocurrency ICOs, which will spike the number of transactions on the network. ICOs have pumped Ethereum the past few months, andthis increase in number of transactionsis likely the result of ICO investment.

From a speculative point of view, it is not entirely surprising to see the mempool go down in size either. The Bitcoin price has not seen a big breakout since its last bull run. This often affects the number of transactions on the network. This is not really a cause for alarm. Some speculators feel this stagnation is a sign of an imminent price decrease. It is impossible to correlate those two factors. As more people echo these (false?) statements, the market will eventually respond. However, a lower mempool does notautomatically result in a lower Bitcoin price.

Thischart shows how the mempool was pretty small in April of 2017 as well. The number of transactions started picking up again due to the Bitcoin price going up. At its peak, the mempool contained over 234,000 unconfirmed transactions. Everything needs to be put in perspectivewhen dealing with any investments, Bitcoin included and its mempool. There is absolutely no reason to panic whatsoever.

The Whole Internet Is Managed By 14 People; Each One Is A Security Keyholder – Fossbytes

Short Bytes:There are 14 people who handle the Internet. These people are the members of ICANN. This organizationchecks Internet security, as well as links domains to IP addresses. There are seven people who hold the key, and the other seven are backup keyholders. The security of the organization is very tight considering its responsibility as an Internet security system.

A team of 14 people has control on the Internet. Each of the individual holds a key, which whencombined together forms the main master key of the whole of the Internet networks worldwide. Seven of these fourteen people are the main keyholders, while other seven are the backup keyholders.

The information was gathered by The Guardian. And all the details were based on the highly secure Key Ceremony attended by its special project editor James Ball.

The team joins in a meeting held four times a year. As reported, all the keyholders of the unit are highly experienced and personalized in Internet security. Further, no country has too many keyholders or rather its not really allowed.

The body handles the Domain Name System that links web address to IP address. For every web page, there is a numerical internet address. The objective of the master key concept is to secure the whole Domain Name System.

There are multiple security levels. Each keyholder keeps their metal keys in the most security-tightened place. All these safety and security is taken care by an organization named Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) which holds the system.

For that matter, if we talk about the security system of the office, its not easy to get inside their working arena, quite obvious. It actually requires passwords to pin entry to the smart card to biometric hand scan to enter any room. That too only one door at a time can be opened. It is like a mantrap, says James from The Guardian.

But did you notice their strategy, plan or security? Well, ICANNs plan is a backup for situations of cyber attacks. The reason the keys are divided among 14 is only to ensure no power goes to a single hand, which is otherwise risky.

Bitdefender Internet Security 2017 One of the most efficient security suites – GameSinners (press release) (blog)

Bitdefender is one of the most popular anti- virus and anti- malware solutions out there. It has been around for a while now, and thankfully, it seems that it only got better over time. All products of the company are extremely efficient when it comes to protecting your home computer, your office computer or other devices. Bitdefender Internet Security 2017 is one of the most efficient security suites one can install on their computer at this point. It offers a great number of useful features, yet it is simple to use. You really dont have to be an IT specialist to make use of this software.

First of all, Bitdefender Internet Security 2017 is easy to install and has a clean users interface. Users wont need to go through tens or hundreds of tabs until they find what they are looking for. Everything is overseeable in this program and even a novice can easily learn how to get around the software. Users will find a series of tabs that will redirect them towards the different security components offered by the program. The security suite works great on Windows systems, Mac computers, iOS and Android devices too. However, Windows users reported a better user experience than Mac users did. Even so, the program is suitable for devices running on either of these operating systems.

As if the previous versions of Bitdefender werent great enough, Bitdefender Internet Security 2017 brings even more to the table. The latest edition of the software offers a high- grade protection against internet threats, advanced protection against ransomware attacks, a two-way firewall, and an efficient Parental Advisor. Also, the program now features an improved password manager and a File Shredder. One of the best features of the Bitdefender Internet Security 2017 is its Autopilot mode. Users wont get any annoying popups and alerts. The security suite silently works in the background, making sure that the system is protected against all the threats.

The Bitdefender Internet Security 2017 is not only easy to use, it is also extremely efficient. The security suite performs really well in tests. The software offers 100% protection againstestablished malware and zero-day threats according to AV-TEST.org. Basically, this is the ultimate level of protection one can expect from an antivirusor an anti- malware solution. The security suite almost instantly blocks ransomware attacks too. This way, all the important and sensitive data is protected all the time.

Users can also enjoy the benefits of theweb-based remote management console that now looks even better. As its name suggests, thanks to this feature, users will remotely gain access to information regarding their registered computers status and they can enable or disable Autopilot mode too. While the password manager normally performs extremely well, it seems to struggle a little bit when it comes tonon-standard password pages. To be more exact, on this kind of pages the password manager sometimes fails to fill all fields in some web forms. Other than this, the password manager is very efficient, just like its browser extension.

We already mentioned the Parental Advisor featured by Bitdefender Internet Security 2017. This feature allows users to set up a different account for each child. After setting up the accounts and linking them to the specific devices, parents can get reports on the programs and apps they use. if any of them seem to be insecure, parents can simply click on them and thus prevent the child from using them again. On Android devices, parents can also block certain contacts. This way they will be unable to contact the child again. And vice-versa. To take things even further, through this feature parents can even mark certain areas as secure or insecure. The Bitdefender Internet Security 2017 will automatically let them know whenever their children enter restricted areas.

Overall, the Bitdefender Internet Security 2017 performs really well. It efficiently protects every device it is installed on, with a high grade of success in detecting and blocking threats. Some would think that this means the program will seriously slow their system down when working. Thankfully, it isnt the case with the Bitdefender Internet Security 2017. While it will have an impact on your devices performance, it wont be a notable one.

Bitdefender Internet Security 2017 is now on sale. Users can save $35 is they choose to install the security suite on three devices. In this case, they will need to pay $44.99 for a one- year subscription. This is even lower than the price they would pay for installing the suite on only one device, which would cost them $59.99. Of course, customers can install the security suite on up to 10 devices for $89.99. They can also buy two- years of three- years subscriptions.

See Which Mac Antivirus Protects Best (and Worst) – Laptop Mag

"Macs don't get malware" was a popular rallying cry around the same time those "I'm a Mac; I'm a PC" commercials were a thing, but it hasn't been true for a while. MacOS is susceptible to everything from Trojans to ransomware, and if you don't get a security suite to protect yourself, you could be the next victim.

The good news is that the vast majority of macOS protection programs offer excellent protection; the bad news is that a well-known program called MacKeeper does not, especially when dealing with run-of-the-mill malware.

This information comes from AV-TEST, a Madgeburg, Germany-based testing lab that periodically evaluates antivirus software across a variety of platforms. In April and May 2017, the company took a look at 10 of the most prominent masOS antivirus products. It discovered that nine of the products were up to snuff; furthermore, four of them had functionally perfect detection rates.

MORE: Best Mac Antivirus Software and Apps

Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac, Intego Mac Internet Security X9, Kaspersky Internet Security for Mac and Symantec Norton Security all successfully detected every piece of malware that AV-TEST threw their way, without producing any false positives or putting undue stress on the system. Except for Intego, all also detected nearly 100 percent of Windows malware that might be lurking on a Mac. If you have one of those four programs, you're all set; if not, consider getting one.

At the other end of the spectrum was the ignominious MacKeeper, which detected only 85.9 percent of incoming threats. This may sound like a B grade, but AV-TEST sets its minimum threshold for recommendation at 90 percent with no false positives. (We'd put the minimum at 95 percent.)

While it's probably better to have MacKeeper than nothing at all, even that is open to debate, as many experts consider MacKeeper to be worse than useless. If you're going to pay money for an AV program, it may as well be one that detects almost every threat.

Trend Micro Antivirus for Mac came in at second place with 99.5 percent of malware detected. Canimaan Software ClamXav Sentry, ESET Endpoint Security and Sophos Central Endpoint tied for third with 98.4 detection rates each. Any of those programs should protect you just fine.

But ProtectWorks AntiVirus scored a 94.6 percent detection rates, which is lower than what we're comfortable with. With antivirus software, what matters is how much slips through, and in that respect, ProtectWorks did three times as badly as ClamXav, ESET or Sophos.

It's worth noting that all of the macOS AV programs tested worked in conjunction with the built-in macOS security protocols, which include the Gatekeeper application screener and the XProtect signature-based malware checker. (This isn't the case with Windows, which requires you to either accept its built-in security suite or install a third-party one.)

Installing a third-party AV program on your Mac will not compromise the protection that already Apple offers. It's to your advantage to install something as long as it's something other than MacKeeper or ProtectWorks.

In our opinion: Individuals and governments should do more to recognize and combat cyber attacks – Deseret News

"Its important that businesses, governments and individuals adopt and continually revise best practices as a way to both deter and deny malicious internet actors from profiting off of cyber vulnerabilities. Those who would never think to keep their door unlocked or ajar in a rough neighborhood don't think twice about letting malicious hackers gain access to their private data."

Individuals and governments should do more to recognize and combat insidious cyber attacks. Sen. Orrin Hatchs new bipartisan bill, the so-called Promoting Good Cyber Hygiene Act, is a fine first step worthy of congressional support.

Only a few weeks after the so-called WannaCry ransomware attack paralyzed tens of thousands of computers, yet another internet outbreak hit Ukraine and 64 other countries this week, including the United States.

In Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, ATMs stopped working, according to the New York Times. About 80 miles away, workers were forced to manually monitor radiation at the old Chernobyl nuclear plant when their computers failed. Well-known businesses were affected such as the U.S. pharmaceutical company Merck and the chocolatiers at Cadbury.

A separate attack occurred late last month targeting members of the British parliament. Utah, which is home to one of the United States intelligence communitys largest data storage centers, is undoubtedly an international target.

According to figures from the Department of Justice, since 2016 there have been an average of 4,000 ransomware attacks a day thats a 300 percent year-to-year jump from 2015.

Many of these kinds of attacks are preventable if individuals and corporations follow what Hatch calls good cyber hygiene. His act would direct the National Institute of Standards and Technology to establish Internet security best practices." The information would be continually updated, regularly reviewed and available to the public the standards are voluntary.

Skeptics might say that publicly publishing and producing safety guidelines only helps bad actors better understand how to get around cyber security. Yet, most experts say that many attacks are not particularly sophisticated and can be stopped by taking rudimentary safety precautions.

Some of these precautions include:

These are just some basic steps for guarding against attacks.

Its important that businesses, governments and individuals adopt and continually revise best practices as a way to both deter and deny malicious internet actors from profiting off of cyber vulnerabilities. Those who would never think to keep their door unlocked or ajar in a rough neighborhood don't think twice about letting malicious hackers gain access to their private data.

Sen. Hatch anticipates bipartisan support for his bill, SB1475. This should be a priority for members of Congress. After all, ransomeware knows no partisan boundaries.
