SC Proposes Introduction Of Artificial Intelligence In Justice Delivery System – Inc42 Media

AI will help in better administration of justice delivery and constitution, says Chief Justice Of India SA Bobde

Automation will, however, not replace humans, CJI adds

Authorities will continue to use human translators to validate and correct output of AI-based tools

After creating waves across startups, artificial intelligence (AI) seems to have now entered the doors of justice. The Chief Justice of India, SA Bobde, has recently said that the Supreme Court has proposed to introduce a system of AI which would help in better administration of justice delivery and constitution.

The CJI also made it clear that the automation would not replace humans. He said that the judiciary would continue to rely on the knowledge and wisdom of judges and the deployment of an AI integration would help reduce the number of pending cases and improve the efficiency of the judicial system.

We propose to introduce, if possible, a system of artificial intelligence. There are many things which we need to look at before we introduce ourselves. We do not want to give the impression that this is ever going to substitute the judges, said the CJI at the Constitution Day function organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association.

Reiterating how automation would not take away jobs, Justice Bobde said the law functions in a uniquely complex environment that lawyers and judges are best placed to navigate. He also said that the authorities would continue to use human translators to validate and correct the output of the AI-based translation tools.

Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar who was also present at the Constitution Day function said that India had started a startup movement in 2015 and India has now become the third-largest country in terms of startups. He also said that more than 24K startups have come up since 2015 out of which more than 10K are startups on information technology.

Indian startups have been changing the face of many industries including ecommerce marketing, banking, healthcare, fintech among others by deploying AI.

Bill Gates, who was on a three-day visit to India, also spoke about how startups in India have revolutionized the healthcare sector by using automation. Gates spoke about how smartphones are changing how chronic diseases are detected. He also added that this kind of technology has helped the world make a lot of progress. We have miracle tools provided by current AI, like cancer detection. What we have today is a tool that can take AI and create an ultrasound device where when a woman is pregnant is going to see if it is going to be a complicated pregnancy, he added.

With hundreds of companies across verticals moving their data to the cloud, AI has become very important and Indians are contributing a lot towards the global AI ecosystem. The government is also looking to solve bring huge data sets to the public domain for startups to leverage and create solutions in more sectors.

It is important to recognize that intelligence within IoT technology market is not inherent but rather must be carefully planned. AIoT market elements will be found embedded within software programs, chipsets, and platforms as well as human-facing devices such as appliances, which may rely upon a combination of local and cloud-based intelligence.

Just like the human nervous system, IoT networks will have both autonomic and cognitive functional components that provide intelligent control as well as nerve end-points that act like nerve endings for neural transport (detection and triggering of communications) and nerve channels that connect the overall system. The big difference is that the IoT technology market will benefit from engineering design in terms of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cognitive computing placement in both centralized and edge computing locations.

AI is rapidly making its way into many advanced solutions including autonomous vehicles, smart bots, advanced predictive analytics, and more. Many industry verticals will be transformed through AI integration with enterprise, industrial, and consumer product and service ecosystems. It is destined to become an integral component of business operations including supply chains, sales and marketing processes, product and service delivery and support models. The term for AI support of IoT (or AIoT) is just beginning to become part of the ICT lexicon as the possibilities for the former adding value to the latter are only limited by the imagination.

AI enhances the ability for big data analytics and IoT platforms to provide value to each of these market segments. The use of AI for decision making in IoT and data analytics will be crucial for efficient and effective decision making, especially in the area of streaming data and real-time analytics associated with edge computing networks. Real-time data will be a key value proposition for all use cases, segments, and solutions. The ability to capture streaming data, determine valuable attributes, and make decisions in real-time will add an entirely new dimension to service logic. In many cases, the data itself, and actionable information will be the service.

The convergence of AI and IoT technologies and solutions (AIoT) is leading to thinking networks and systems that are becoming increasingly more capable of solving a wide range of problems across a diverse number of industry verticals. AI adds value to IoT through machine learning and improved decision making. IoT adds value to AI through connectivity, signaling, and data exchange.

AI adds value to IoT through machine learning and improved decision making. IoT adds value to AI through connectivity, signaling, and data exchange.

While early solutions are rather monolithic, it is anticipated that AIoT integration within businesses and industries will ultimately lead to more sophisticated and valuable inter-business and cross-industry solutions. These solutions will focus primarily upon optimizing system and network operations as well as extracting value from industry data through dramatically improved analytics and decision-making processes.

In many cases, the data itself, and actionable information will be the service. AIoT infrastructure and services will therefore be leveraged to achieve more efficient IoT operations, improve human-machine interactions and enhance data management and analytics, creating a foundation for IoT Data as a Service (IoTDaaS) and AI based Decisions as a Service.

IoTDaaS constitutes retrieving, storing and analyzing information and provide customer either of the three or integrated service package depending on the budget and the requirement. New models are emerging to reduce friction across the value chain including enhanced Big Data as a Service (BDaaS) offerings. BDaaS is anticipated to make cross-industry, cross-company, and even cross-competitor data exchange a reality that adds value across the ecosystem with minimized security and privacy concerns.

IoTDaaS offers convenient and cost effective solutions to enterprises of various sizes and domain. IoTDaaS constitutes retrieving, storing and analyzing information and provide customer either of the three or integrated service package depending on the budget and the requirement. AI algorithms enhance the ability for big data analytics and IoT platforms to provide value to each of these market segments. One of the important growth areas for the Data as a Service market is to leverage AI to offer Value-added Data in a Decisions as a Service model.

Big data in IoT is different than conventional IoT and thus will requires more robust, agile and scalable platforms, analytical tools and data storage systems than conventional big data infrastructure. Looking beyond data management processes, IoT data itself will become extremely valuable as an agent of change for product development as well as identification of supply gaps and realization of unmet demands. Big data and analytics will increase in importance as IoT evolves to become more commonplace with the deployment of 5G IoT.

The Massive Machine-type Communications (mMTC) portion of fifth generation cellular networks will facilitate a highly scalable M2M network for many IoT applications, particularly those that do not require high bandwidth. Data generated through sensors embedded in various things/objects will generate massive amounts of unstructured (big) data on real-time basis that holds the promise for intelligence and insights for dramatically improved decision processes.

Big data in IoT is also dissimilar than non-machine related analytics and thus will require more robust, agile and scalable platforms, analytics tools, and data storage systems than conventional infrastructure. Due to this new architecture approach, the need to handle data differently, and the sheer volume of unstructured data, there will be great opportunities for big Data in IoT. Analytics used in IoT will become an enabler for the entire IoT ecosystem as enterprise begins to take advantage of new business opportunities such as syndicating their own data.

AI coupled with advanced big data analytics provides the ability to make raw data meaningful and useful as information for decision-making purposes.

The ability to capture streaming data, determine valuable attributes, and make decisions in real-time will add an entirely new dimension to service logic. In many cases, the data itself, and actionable information will be the service. However, real-time data is anticipated to become a highly valuable aspect of all solutions as a determinant of user behavior, application effectiveness, and identifier of new and enhanced mobile/wireless and/or IoT related apps and services.

In terms of overall AIoT data management, we see three different types of IoT Data:

Story continues

AI will be useful in support of managing each of these data types in terms of identifying, categorizing, and decision making.

We see the AIoT market transforming from today's largely consumer appliance and electronics related approach to one in which AIoT data is highly valued asset wherein companies like SAS provide a utility function in terms of helping enterprise, industrial, and government clients monetize their data. This will likely occur in a Data as a Service market model, which may be segmented in various ways including by Sector including Public Data, Business Data, and Government Data:

It may also be segmented by Source Type. As it is prohibitively difficult to identify all of the sources and source types, we have broadly segmented Source by Machine Data (consumer appliances, vehicles [ cars, trucks, planes, trains, ships, etc. ], robots and industrial equipment, etc.) and Non-machine Data (everything else including people texting/talking/etc., enterprise data collected by humans, etc.).

It is important to note that the DaaS also includes data sourced from a machine (such as from a jet engine) that is not Internet-connected and thus limited in utility without the Internet of Things (IoT) to collect, relay, and provide opportunities for feedback loops. Accordingly, we have also segmented the Data as a Service market by Data Collection Type, which includes IoT DaaS data and Non-IoT DaaS data. Machine Data that does not use IoT, by definition, will not be streaming data or allow for real-time analytics.

The Future of Computing could be Magnetic – Robert Lea – Medium

Magnetic-based spintronic computers could match the raw computing power of quantum computers, without the need for electricity.

Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed an innovative new circuit that allows for precise computing without the need for electricity. The novel design instead relies on magnetic waves an advance that makes a significant step towards magnetic devices. Dubbed spintronics these devices have the potential to be more powerful and efficient than electronics.

Classical computers which depend on the consumption of massive amounts of electricity generate a huge amount of wasted heat. In contrast to this, spintronic devices use very little electricity in comparison and thus, generate far less heat practically none, in fact.

Spintronic devices use a particular property of electrons on a quantum-level called the spin-wave in magnetic materials in a lattice-like arrangement. The process involves utilising modulation of this spin-wave to produce a measurable output correlated to computing.

People are beginning to look for computing beyond silicon. Wave computing is a promising alternative, says Luqiao Liu, a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and principal investigator of the Spintronic Material and Device Group in the Research Laboratory of Electronics.

The significant breakthrough made by the MIT team is the development of a circuit architecture that does away with the need for bulky components used to inject electrical currents. This is an advantage as such components can cause signal noise, thus reducing performance.

The team negated the need for such components by developing a nanometer-wide magnetic domain wall in layered nanofilms of magnetic material to modulate a passing spin-wave, with no need for any extra components or electrical current. In turn, the spin-wave can be tuned to control the location and width of this domain as needed, giving precise control of two changing spin-wave states. These spin states corresponding to the 1s and 0s used in classical computing.

Future applications of these spin-waves could see pairs fed into a circuit through dual-channels. Each member of this pair could be modulated for different properties combining to generate measurable quantum interference. This is analogous to the use of photon-wave interference in quantum computing.

By using this narrow domain wall, we can modulate the spin-wave and create these two separate states, without any real energy costs. We just rely on spin waves and intrinsic magnetic material, Liu continues.

As such, the researchers suggest that such spintronics based devices relying on interference could, in theory, match quantum computers in terms of raw computing power, executing complex tasks that conventional computers struggle with.

Spin waves are ripples of energy with small wavelengths, the collective spins of many electrons are called magnons. Although these magnons are not true particles they can be measured in a similar way to electrons to be used in computing applications.

The team layered a pattern of cobalt/nickel nanofilms each a few atoms thick with certain desirable magnetic properties that can handle a high volume of spin waves. Then placing this wall in the middle of a magnetic material with a special lattice structure. This system was then integrated into a circuit.

On one side of the circuit, the researchers excited constant spin waves in the material. As this wave passes through the wall, its magnons immediately spin in the opposite direction, flipping from north in the first region to south in the second region beyond the wall. This flip causes a dramatic shift in the waves phase or its angle of orientation and a slight decrease in its magnitude or its power.

In their experiments, the researchers placed a separate antenna on the opposite side of the circuit, detecting and transmitting an output signal. R

Their results indicated that, at its output state, the phase of the input wave flipped 180 degrees. The waves magnitude measured from highest to lowest peak had also decreased by a significant amount.

The team also discovered a mutual interaction between spin-waves and the magnetic domain wall. This interaction enabled them to efficiently switch between two states. Without the domain wall, the circuit would be uniformly magnetized. But, with the domain wall in place, the circuit has a split, modulated wave.

By controlling the spin-wave, the MIT researchers found that they were able to control the position of the domain wall. This process relies on a phenomenon involving spinning electrons essentially jolting a magnetic material in order to flip its magnetic orientation otherwise known as spin-transfer torque.

The team boosted the power of injected spin waves to induce a specific spin in the magnons pulling the domain wall toward the boosted wave source. Doing this results in the wall getting stuck under the antenna effectively making it unable to modulate waves and ensuring uniform magnetization in this state.

Using a special magnetic microscope, the team were able to identify that this process causes a micrometre-sized shift in the wall. Just enough to position it anywhere along the material block.

Liu notes that the mechanism of magnon spin-transfer torque was proposed, but not demonstrated, a few years ago. There was good reason to think this would happen, the researcher adds. But our experiments prove what will actually occur under these conditions.

Liu describes the whole circuit is like a water pipe. The domain wall acting as a valve controls how the spin-wave flows through the material just like water flows through a pipe.

But you can also imagine making water pressure so high, it breaks the valve off and pushes it downstream, Liu elaborates. If we apply a strong enough spin-wave, we can move the position of domain wall except it moves slightly upstream, not downstream.

Such innovations could enable practical wave-based computing for specific tasks, such as the signal-processing technique, called fast Fourier transform.

As a further step in their work, the researchers hope to build a working wave circuit that can execute basic computations. In order to do this, they must optimize materials, reduce potential signal noise, and further study how fast they can switch between states by moving around the domain wall.

Thats next on our to-do list, concludes Liu.

Innovate, and grow – Economic Times

By Ashish Arora Et Al

Is American innovation sputtering? The data suggests so: productivity growth in the US, which is powered by innovation, has been decelerating. Total factor productivity grew substantially in the middle of the 20th century, but started slowing in 1970.

Data from the National Science Foundation indicate that US investment in science has steadily increased between 1970 and 2010, as measured by dollars spent (up 5X), number of PhDs trained (2X) and articles published (7X). Why is there little productivity growth? Probably todays science is simply not as groundbreaking as before.

Some dispute this, however, pointing to advances in quantum physics (quantum computing), plasma physics and molecular biology. Another explanation is that todays science is not being translated into applications in other words, something is keeping scientific discoveries from fuelling productive innovation.

Our research finds that the US innovation ecosystem has splintered since the 1970s, with corporate and academic science pulling apart and making application of basic scientific discoveries more difficult. Our analysis also shows that venture capital-backed scientific entrepreneurship has helped to bridge this gap between corporate science and academia but only in a couple of sectors.

From Why the US Innovation Ecosystem is Slowing Down

Processing 30 billion images a month, heres how ImageKit delivers 98% of the optimised images in under 50 mil – YourStory

Industry statistics say that if a page takes more than three seconds to load, almost 40 percent of visitors tend to leave that site. According to HTTP Archive, on an average, around 64 percent of a websites weight is comprised of images. Therefore, the size of an image has a direct impact on the page load speed and user experience. This means image optimisation is key.

That is why startups like ImageKit are taking the market by storm. The startups flagship solution, ImageKit.io is a smart real-time image optimisation and transformation platform that simplifies the process of optimising, transforming and delivering perfect images across different devices, network speeds and display densities.

Working together at Gurugram-based online travel platform, Ixigo, Rahul Nanwani, Manu Chaudhary and Somesh Khatkar (the founders of ImageKit.io) realised that there were very few ready-made image optimisation products in the market, most products didnt integrate easily into a companys existing infrastructure, either. Additionally, many didnt have a pricing model that supported optimisation at scale. Starting up in October 2016, the founders took three months to build the MVP and launched ImageKit.io in January 2017.

Today, ImageKit.io serves over 30 billion images every month on their customers websites.

ImageKit.io has different kinds of workloads that enable them to serve client requests in milliseconds. This requires different kinds of instance types, and is here that Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), a web service that provides secure, resizable compute capacity in the cloud, works to their advantage. Rahul agrees, adding, EC2 has a wide range of server types to support compute, memory or storage-intensive operations.

ImageKits association with AWS started early on.

As ImageKit began to grow, so did their infrastructure requirements. Thats when Imagekit saw the need to go beyond what was offered under free credits and began evaluating its options. During this time, they were clearly able to see the advantages offered by AWS in comparison to other cloud service providers says Rahul. Today, we leverage both - the traditional servers (AWS EC2) and Serverless (Lambda, Lambda@Edge) for different purposes. And, since ImageKit.io is a complete image delivery and transformation product, AWS CloudFront, the Content Delivery Network and AWS S3 - the storage service offered by AWS, are an integral part of what we offer.

In addition, AWSs global infrastructure has doubled up as a key advantage for ImageKit.io.

He adds that, in the last two years, the traffic handling capacity of CloudFront has gone up significantly with AWS adding a number of nodes. South Africa and the Middle East are new regions which are now covered by AWS CloudFront. The number of edge locations have gone up in India in India too. All this has worked in ImageKit.ios favour. The load time and caching performance has been very consistent for all our customers and thereby helping us deliver a good user experience.

Today, with ImageKit.io using a number of services within the AWS infrastructure, deployment has not only become simpler, but there is also clarity about the expected inter-service performance levels. Providing further insight, Rahul says, Being a SaaS product that integrates on a live website or an app, and handles something as critical as the images on that website or the app, we need to ensure that the infrastructure is able to scale well, especially during the festive season or a sale period when there is a sudden spike in traffic soon after a sale notification that has gone out. Thats where our ability to autoscale the infrastructure for the incoming traffic or API requests helps. A mix of spot instances, reserved instances and serverless is used to handle the short spike of traffic. Here, Route53, the DNS Service offered by AWS makes it really easy for us to configure failovers within our infrastructure in case something goes wrong. To put it simply, AWS products have helped ImageKit.io scale not just to meet the needs of their growing customer base, but also scale easily with the varying image delivery and optimisation requirements of their customers. He adds, The benefits that come with economies of scale can be realised with a cloud provider like AWS.

While the technology at its core has been one of the driving factors for ImageKit, the other has been consistent support from AWS support and business development teams in India and the partnerships they have been able to build.

AWS has also helped the startup find partners, expand their network in the ecosystem and facilitated introductions. AWS has a huge set of active accounts, which have a requirement for better image optimisation and delivery. In addition, AWS works closely with a large pool of technology partners, service providers and agencies, who in turn work with other companies who need solutions like ImageKit. So references and introductions by AWS and their partners to these companies have helped us tap business.

Today, ImageKit.io is being used by 300 companies, which also includes their first three paying customers. Some of Imagekits notable customers include Nykaa, Hopscotch, Times Now, Asian Paints, Republic TV, and Nearbuy, among others. In addition, over 10,000 developers all over the globe use its freemium model.

Having solved some of the most basic yet critical problems for developers and brands, ImageKit now is working towards the next logical step - supporting more complex integrations while still being a completely self-serviceable product. And, with content consumption on the rise in India, the team believes theres a parallel opportunity for them to explore beyond image optimisation.
