Backblaze, the popular macOS backup service, has just released a nice update to its iOS and Android apps. While the mobile apps have been great for personal users for years, business customers have been left out. With version 5.0, Backblaze B2 customers can now access your B2 buckets, browse files inside the buckets, and download them to your mobile device.

For business customers, Backblaze B2 is a popular backup choice. Its integratedwith popular vendors like Synology, Cloudflare, FreeNAS,and others.

Along with this update for Backblaze B2 customers, version 5.0 brings another nice update for consumers. Whether its a large video on your desktop that you need to retrieve or a large presentation you can now download it to your device without worrying about file sizes. The file size limits have been bumped up to 5GB for personal backup data and uncapped if you are downloading B2 Cloud Storage files. The only limits youd see otherwise are the storage on your device. Obviously, youll need to watch your LTE data usage if away from Wi-Fi.

Overall, this is a nice update to the app. Backblaze promises better performance on older devices as well as new ones. I am a big fan of Backblaze having been a customer for many years. If you are a Backblaze B2 customer, this is a welcome update at no additional cost. The updated apps are available on The App Store and Google Play Store today. This update comes on the heels of Backblaze for Mac upgrading to version 7.0 with Catalina support and an option for unlimited version history.

The cloud allows for this growth for all storage needs, whether hot, cold, or archive to maintain proper use and compliance.

When organisations started the initial migration to the cloud, they were using more of a lift and shift approach. Early adopters were lured in by the public cloud marketing promises of immediate return on investment and lower cost of ownership. As many organisations found, this wasnt always the case when simply picking up and moving servers to the cloud. Sure, there were benefits in decreasing storage costs, and if your organisation was about to be required to refresh hardware with a capital investment, moving to operational expenses made sense. The real benefit to moving to the cloud is to bring together the previous four points and tie them into this one to re-factor your organisation for a true cloud transformation. A necessity to operating efficiently within the cloud is to evaluate and transform the manner in which your organisation does business and find ways to re-factor applications, analyse data, and secure connected devices.

To truly realise the benefits of a cloud ecosystem, it is important to take a transformative approach to cloud usage. A simple lift and shift to the cloud from your current infrastructure will create some short-term benefits, such as decreasing CapEx and eliminating hardware refresh cycles. Data can fuel a variety of machine learning or other advanced algorithms, for example, to fuel highly personalized digital experiences. In terms of application development, affordable and easy to manage cloud storage can streamline the process of building and deploying new software. Thats because developers can more easily deploy and test their applications with live data without requiring extensive on-premises computing resources. Advances in how we store data havent kept up with our ability to generate and process data, which causes considerable concern for organizations that deal with data at petabyte (PB) scales, Friend said. StorCentric’s Retrospect joins backup to cloud crowd – Blocks and Files

StorCentric looks to move ahead with QLC flash and add cross-product backup to the cloud as it integrates its four acquisitions. These were our takeaways from an interview with CEO Mihir Shah and CTOSuryaVaranasi in Silicon Valley this week.

StorCentric was founded in 2018 as a private equity investment vehicle for Drobo, a consumer storage supplier. In August 2018 the venture-backed firm bought the Nexsan storage array businessand this summer it acquired Retrospect, a backup company and Vexata, a struggling NVMe-oF, all-flash array startup.

This four storage properties combined have one million customers, mostly through Retrospect and Drobo, in more than 100 countries. StorCentric also claims 40,000 enterprise customers and $50m in annual revenues. The product lines inherited from the four acquisitions have separate engineering teams and are being developed under a technology roadmap.

Retrospect backs up virtualized servers; the 20 year-old company has sold 500,000 licenses with 100PB of data protected and will become a cross-product backup facility covering Drobo, Nexsan and Vexata. StorCentric will add Retrospect backup to AWS and Google Cloud Platform. It can also be used to move data between StorCentrics arrays.

Drobo has more than 400,000 customers and StorCentric will add a faster, bigger business-class iteration.

There are three Nexsan array products, Unity, E-Series and Assureon, spanning medium and large enterprises. The high performance Unity file and block array will be developed with a software-only product deployable on X86 servers. Unity will be optimised for NVMe drives and quad-level cell flash. (StorCentric and Dell EMC are in dispute over the Unity brand name but, Shah says, Nexsan used it first.)

The dense E-Series can store 2.5PB of block data in a 12U enclosure. QLC flash will be supported using 2.5-inch drives in the first quarter next year. Varanasi said the E-Series software will reduce the amount of writes going to the QLC flash.

The Assureon archive object store will extend to archive data in the public cloud as a disaster recovery copy. It will be deployable as software on any x86 server and also in the cloud.

Vexata sits at the high end of StorCentrics line-up. Varanasi said the company ran into problems because the sales cycle for its array took up to 18 months. Few sales resulted as Vexata burned through its cash.

According to Varanasi, the 4-node Vexata system can match the performance of the 4-node Oracle RAC and is 30 per cent cheaper. Its roadmap includes an entry-level dense system with 1PB in 6U using QLC NAND. This will have 50 per cent of the current TLC flash system performance at less than half the price, Varanesi said.

As with the Nexsan arrays, Retrospect will provide Vexata backup to and disaster recovery in the public cloud.

Shah said StorCentric had a strong focus on customer satisfaction, a land and expand customer account strategy and a focus on acquisitions and partnerships.

There has already been a musical, Chess, inspired by the contest between a Soviet master and an American challenger. Now comes a play by Tom Morton-Smith that dramatises the real-life battle to be world chess champion that took place in Reykjavik in 1972 between Boris Spassky and Bobby Fischer. Its an intriguing story but one told at excessive length and, unlike Morton-Smiths brilliant 2015 play about Robert Oppenheimer, it never gives sufficient heft to the ideological context.

The play presents us with two classically contrasted opponents. Spassky is the coolly orthodox reigning champion who abides by World Chess Federation rules. Fischer is the brattish maverick who arrives late, criticises the venue and spits in an officials face. Even if we know the outcome, there is a fascination in seeing how Fischers tactic of breaking his rivals ego succeeds not only in undermining Spassky but also in inducing paranoia among his team. We are also reminded of how the federation caves in to Fischer because so much money is at stake.

Although both players are studiously apolitical, their contest is clearly a proxy war. But, while we hear two phone conversations between Henry Kissinger and Fischer, I wish we had learned more about the political background. The summer of 72 was a time in which the Soviet Union was losing its foothold in the Middle East and the US was on the run in Vietnam, which lent extra significance to events in Reykjavik. Morton-Smiths chief concern seems to be with Fischers unruly temperament. Robert Emms plays him excellently as a poor boy from the Bronx who feels he is treated as a freak and whose sense of exclusion fuels his neurosis. Even if Fischer is too dominant, Ronan Raftery deftly shows how Spasskys self-containment gradually disintegrates. There is strong support from Gary Shelford as an Icelandic security guard who explains the role played by ravens in his countrys foundation. There is a good play in here somewhere, but it is not helped by Annabelle Comyns over-complicated staging or the three-hour running-time.
