Red Shark Review of the Year – August 2019 – RedShark News

From Apple to Windows, from Blackmagic to RED, a month of contrasting companies and technologies.

The doings of what was the first ever trillion dollar company fixated us this year like no other. And, to be fair, thats probably because Apple is a company like no other. Heres one take on the future for Cupertino.

To get people's money in future, Apple (and every other company in the same marketplaces) needs to develop products that are either so much better that people can't resist buying them, or which are different altogether: completely new product categories, in other words.

Either option is going to be good for media professionals. Even if some of the money is being spent on electric cars. We will probably see new and better displays, more FPGA-type technology (like the Mac Pro's optional Afterburner) and a whole raft of stuff that we have not even thought about because of Apple's secrecy. And that's without bringing AI into the conversation.

Phil Rhodes sounds a note of caution on the increased tendency for people to assume that everythings peachy because theres a copy in the cloud.

As weve said before, RAID is not backup. Now cloud storage is becoming less of an esoteric approach, its necessary to be clear that cloud storage isnt backup either. Keeping data on a RAID and on cloud storage is one layer of backup, certainly, and cloud platforms certainly offer useful reliability features, but the old adage remains true.

If you dont have at least three copies, you dont have it, and the cloud doesnt change that.

The dual-processor HP Z8 supports up to 56 cores, Quadro RTX graphics, 3TB of RAM and loads of storage. But is this the right kind of power for your work? we asked. It turned out to depend rather a lot on what software you were using and the route that the developer had taken in prioritising GPU optimisation over CPUs.

The camera industry leaks like a sieve with extra holes in it and so many of the machines that are finally unveiled onto the market suffer from the sort of ennui that comes when youve already read all the details and are just sifting through the release notes for something new to say.

Then Blackmagic does something like drop a Pocket Cinema Camera that records 6K footage in BRAW format. Impressively it was already in stock worldwide so there seem to have been a fair few people that knew how to keep a secret involved. All of which mean that the initial impressions and reviews (here and here) followed swiftly after.

A short one but one that struck a chord with many readers.

Every time I find myself feeling drawn back to the Mac, I remind myself that while Apple is very highly vertically integrated (in essence because it makes the hardware and writes the software), Microsoft has to make Windows work on a range of devices that Windows developers have never seen nor even heard of, wrote David Shapton. That's an entirely different scale of potential issues to solve, and, while Windows can still seem a bit rough round the edges sometimes, you have to admit that seeing it run on such a huge variety of devices is pretty impressive.

We still don't know the full answer to this one. It was back in August that RED first started teasing us all with images and a few details about its new Komodo camera. Four months later and we still dont know that much more, so this article remains a good jumping off point for those that want to delve into the subject.

Top 10 Fixes for iCloud Drive Not Syncing on Windows 10 Issue – Guiding Tech

iCloud for Windows leaves a lot to be desired. Be it error messages during installation or your photos failing to download locally you will run into a fair share of headaches at one point or another. And the same goes for its integrated file syncing service iCloud Drive.

For starters, iCloud Drive isnt the best file cloud-storage service on Windows its slow, clunky, and can take ages to upload or download files. Also, you will face instances where it fails at its job.

If you are running into any serious syncing issues with iCloud Drive, then here are a few pointers that can help you out. Try working your way through each fix in the following order, and you most likely should have iCloud Drive up and running soon.

The first thing you must do is ensure that iCloud Drive is up and running on your computer quite important if you just installed iCloud for Windows for the first time.

Start by clicking the iCloud icon on the system tray, followed by clicking Open iCloud Settings. On the iCloud app that shows up, make sure that the box next to iCloud Drive is checked.

If it isnt, check it and then click Apply. That should activate iCloud Drive on your PC. To access your files, click the iCloud icon on the system tray, and then click Open iCloud Drive.

Make sure that iCloud Drive isnt down at the moment due to an issue with the Apple servers.

To do that, visit Apples System Status page, and then look up the status next to iCloud Drive a green-colored dot indicated no issues, while a red-colored dot denotes the opposite.

If iCloud Drive is unavailable, wait for a few hours, and then look up the System Status page again. Once the iCloud Drive status is back to normal, expect your files to start syncing regularly.

iCloud Drive is also susceptible to various glitches that are just temporary. A simple computer restart should suffice to get rid of them. But if you cant restart your computer right away for some reason, you can instead quit and relaunch the iCloud app forcibly.

To do that, bring up the Task Manager (right-click the taskbar and click Task Manager). Select all iCloud processes such as iCloud Drive, iCloud Services, iCloud Photo Library, etc., and then click End Task. That should stop iCloud for Windows and all of its services.

Afterward, search for and relaunch iCloud for Windows via the Start menu. That will cause the cloud-storage service to relaunch from scratch and hopefully resume any stuck downloads or uploads.

Did you update iCloud for Windows recently? Usually, the latest updates contain fixes for known issues in iCloud Drive and other iCloud services. So if you haven't, make sure to do that now.

Open the Start menu, type apple software update, and press Enter. If any updates are available, apply them.

Note: If you use the Microsoft Store version of iCloud, then the app should be updated automatically. But if automatic updates are turned off for your PC, open the Microsoft Store, click Download and Updates on the Microsoft Store menu, and then apply any updates for iCloud if available.

Dont discount the fact that the problem with iCloud Drive could be due to spotty internet connectivity. If you have direct access to the router, try turning it off for several seconds before switching it back on. That could take care of any minor connectivity issues on the router-side.

Alternatively, try connecting to a different Wi-Fi hotspot and check if that causes iCloud Drive to resume syncing. If that fails, consider changing the default DNS service for your internet connection. Using a popular domain name system such as Google DNS can help enhance connectivity.

To do that, get to the Properties screen of your internet connection (click the Ethernet or Wi-Fi icon on the system tray, and then click Properties). Click Edit under IP Settings, select Manual, turn on the switch next to IPv4, and then insert the following DNS servers into the Preferred DNS and Alternate DNS fields.

Save your changes, and then restart your computer to start using the updated DNS servers for your internet connection.

Are you close to running out of space on iCloud? If that's the case, then your files will fail to sync among your devices. To determine if this is the case, open the iCloud app and check the storage indicator.

If you are close to running out, you must either free up some space on iCloud or upgrade to the next paid storage tier.

Do you have enough space on the primary partition of your hard drive or SSD? If not, iCloud Drive will fail to download files that were uploaded to it from other devices.

Use File Explorer to determine if you have sufficient space available. If you don't have much, then go on a cleaning spree remove junk files, turn on Storage Sense, disable reserved storage, etc.

Alternatively, you can shift iCloud Drive to another partition or external drive.

If all else failed, consider signing out and then signing back into iCloud for Windows. That could potentially nudge iCloud Drive into syncing your files again. However, you will have to redownload all of your iCloud Drive files. Also, you will have to redownload any photos and videos on iCloud Photos, from scratch. If that's something that you don't want to do right now, move onto the next fixes and come back to this later.

To sign out of iCloud, open the iCloud app, and then click Sign Out. After accepting that your files will be deleted from local storage, exit the iCloud app.

Restart your computer, sign back into iCloud for Windows, and then enable iCloud Drive and any other iCloud services that you use.

Apple also has a Microsoft Store version of iCloud for Windows. Despite featuring the same user interface as the traditional desktop app, the Microsoft Store version is marginally better performance-wise and features superior iCloud Drive features such as Files On-Demand and iCloud Sharing.

If you still keep running into issues using the traditional desktop version despite going through the steps above, consider switching to the Microsoft Store app. The transition process is surprisingly smooth. Check our guide on how iCloud Microsoft Store version is different from the desktop one.

Download iCloud for Windows

This isnt an actual fix, but if you dont have the time to go through some of the time-consuming fixes listed above, consider using the iCloud Drive web app on iCloud.com for the time being.

The iCloud Drive web app lets you do anything you can upload and download files, rename files and folders, share them with others, etc. The controls are also well-implemented, and you should have no trouble using them.

Hopefully, the fixes above helped you out, and iCloud Drive is back to syncing your data without issues. But if you didn't already, make it a point to switch to the Microsoft Store version sooner rather than later it's a definite improvement over the desktop version of iCloud, and you should see far fewer sync issues. Just don't expect it to solve all iCloud-related problems.

Next up: Searching for an iCloud Drive alternative? Try Google Drive. It's quite good.

Cloud Compute in 2019: Workloads and Options – insideHPC

In this video, Oracle Sr Director Leo Leung describes cloud computing options by workload in 2019.

Transcript:

Hi, Im Leo Leung, senior director of product management for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. And today Im going to talk about different kinds of workloads you can run on cloud compute instances in the cloud. So theres a lot the variations within these families, but in general youre starting to see three families of compute available:

Looking at these three families of compute, lets talk about the workloads that theyre suited for. So when youre looking at bare metal with storage, this really gives you the ultimate in performance in a specific package. Youre talking about millions of storage operations per second that are possible out of these instances because they typically have solid state storage on board. And what is that good for? Certainly, when youre thinking about your classic transactional types of workloads like OLTP databases and transaction processing types of workloads. Lots of enterprise applications fit in this family, with lots of big database types of applications. You can also start to take advantage of these types of machines if you have software to basically group them together or cluster them for large high performance computing types of workloads.

Okay, so transactional workloads, HPC workloads. Sometimes people call these scale up types of workloads. When you look at this middle family, this is sort of the general purpose type of compute. So this can handle a very wide range of types of applications. This is often used for you scale out types of applications. Meaning youre basically just adding additional instances that have the application code in order to make the application both more resilient and higher performance. Lots of web applications fall into this family. Again, even up to some of the most high performance enterprise applications actually still fall in this category of a web application, but very, very general purpose. This is typically what gets consumed most at cloud providers because youre also able to independently scale your storage.

So in this type of family, you can have applications where theres a huge amount of capacity required, but maybe not as much computing required that its very well suited for that. Now, this last family is becoming extremely popular for certain types of workloads like machine learning where essentially its very, very compute intensive where youre separating out the workload and processing it through the many, many processors that are available on a GPU. Machine learning simulations fall into this family. More and more workloads are becoming applicable to this type of computing.

So there you have it. Three general classes of computing. Of course theres variance when it comes to clock speeds, when it comes to the amount of memory versus storage is on board. But generally they fall in these families: CPU based instances that have storage onboard, CPU instances that require network storage, and GPU instances that require network storage. Thanks a lot for your time.

Strange Cloud Outages that Shook up the Tech World in 2019 – EnterpriseTalk

The cloud has accumulated increasing adoption in the last couple of years. But, the path is not always an easy one, mainly on account of clearly demarcated SLAs for adoption and migration. While the cloud service provider must take responsibility for their infrastructure and security, it may not always be the best way forward and may create challenging situations.

The list below rounds up all the major instances of cloud outages in the year 2019, situations when the customer systems and devices were jeopardized. These incidences will not only highlight the criticality of cloud security but also help to place stronger systems and processes to avoid these incidents.

Apple Cloud

Many iCloud users across the globe received aService Unavailable DNS failure message for several hours in July. This widespread cloud outage disturbed services such as App Store, Apple TV, Apple ID, Apple Music, Apple Music, Apple Books, Subscriptions, and more.Though the issue was resolved, during the time of the outage, users failed to use various functions such as Find My iPhone. Apple confirmed that the cloud outage was due to a BGP route flap issue causing severe packet loss for North American users.

Salesforce

In May 2019,Salesforce faced one of the most shocking service disruptions while the deployment of a database script to the Pardot Marketing Cloud. This incident resulted in advanced permissions being granted to regular users. Salesforce was forced to block the users to prevent the employees from stealing sensitive corporate data. Also, they had to block network access to other Salesforce services like Service Cloud and Sales Cloud to prevent further damage. As a result of this, customers failed to access Pardot Marketing Cloud for 20 hours, and it took 12 days to roll out the other Salesforce services completely.

Amazon AWS

In August 2019, an Amazon AWS US-EAST-1 datacenter in North Virginia faced terrible power failureleading to failure of the datacenters backup generators. It led to 7.5% of the EBS volumes and EC2 instances becoming unavailable. After the restoration of power, Amazon determined that some of them had incurred hardware damage with loss of data. Some customers faced extensive data loss questioning the security of the data stored in the cloud. The AWS failure was one of the significant instances of hardware failure in 2019 that proved that hosting data in the cloud is never completely safe and reliable.

Facebook and Instagram

There were issues with Instagram and Facebook earlier 2019 caused by a server configuration change. During the outage, users faced glitches with Facebook-owned properties WhatsApp and Instagram for around 14 hours. Facebook has received several client complaints in 2019 regarding the app not working, preventing them from accessing the Messenger app.

Google Cloud Servers

The cloud servers in the US-east1 zone were cut off from the rest of the globe due to the Cloud Networking and Load balancing issue. This caused physical damage to multiple concurrent fiber bundles used in the network paths of that region. Google carried out extensive mitigation work after the incident; however, users complained of increased latency.

Microsoft

Microsoft faced its share of cloud outages in 2019, affecting Azure, Dynamics, Microsoft 365, and DevOps. In May, Microsoft suffered an outage that lasted for more than an hour resulting in network connectivity errors in Microsoft Azure. This deeply affected its cloud services, including Xbox Live, Office 365, Microsoft Teams, and several others, which are used by Microsofts commercial customers. The root cause was as an incorrect name server delegation issue affecting the DNS resolution, network connectivity, and downstream impact. Although no customer DNS records got impacted during this incident, it still was a significant failure for the worlds largest company.

Google Cloud Platform

Google Cloud Platform (GCP) experienced significant issues with services, including cloud dataflow, cloud storage, and compute engine recently. This affected multiple products, with major APIs getting impacted globally. Interestingly, this incident came almost 20 days after users faced 100% packet loss to and from 20% of instances in GCPs us-west1-b region for 2.5 hours. The reason for this significant failure was the chubby lock system associated, which resulted in the control plane gaining and losing leadership in short succession.

All these cloud outages surely were eye-openers for the entire industry as they involved some top global brands. The reasons for these outages were strange and least expected, which makes them even more frightening.

Clearly, all small, medium, as well as large scale firms, need to analyze these incidences and employ systems to ensure that such outages can be prevented.

What is Amazon Athena? – TechRadar

The answers companies need from their data can sometimes be elusive. We live in an age where data is in great abundance, especially with the expansion into cloud storage. But the tools to analyze and process that data are not always easy to use, overly accessible, or even that effective. The problem? Data has to reside somewhere, and most companies have to think about how it is stored, who will access it, how to make that secure, and most importantly how to make data access reliable and fast.

Thats where Amazon Athena can help. Its a query service in that companies are able to run SQL queries against their data as though it resides in a local data center. Its serverless in that you dont have to manage the infrastructure at all or use database software to manage it. And, its extremely fast. Your staff can run SQL queries and expect results even on large datasets in a matter of seconds.

To use Amazon Athena, the data is first housed on Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service), which is an object storage service that runs in the cloud. Amazon S3 is what makes the data accessible and safe to use, while Amazon Athena is the query service that provides the power to derive the results you need from the data. This means you don't need to concern yourself about designing databases.

One way to think about Athena? Its somewhat similar to a Google search. You know the data is out there, but its often hard to find the data sets you actually need. A query is similar to a Google search in that you create the parameters for the SQL query you need to perform. The difference here is that you're using cloud computing services instead of a search engine.

This is not something that requires setup or configuration, which is typically the case with a local data store and can involve an ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) which prepares data in a database for a query by isolating the dataset. Instead, your query can run without using ETL and therefore simplifies the process -- you run the query from an easy-to-use web console. You point to your data in S3, configure the schema, and start the query.

One example of how this might work involves a retail company that sells a large number of products with thousands or even million os SKUs (stock-keeping units). A company might want to know if there are SKUs that should be retired. Normally, this might require preparing a complex ETL to configure and prep the data for SQL queries. Because of how the object storage works within Amazon S3 and because of the integration without other Amazon Web Services (such as AWS Glue Data Catalog), the queries work without any prep.

This means companies can run a point-of-sale transactional query like the one related to retired SKUs or perform other queries faster and with better results.

As with most Amazon Web Services, the major benefit to using Amazon Athena is that it provides great flexibility in how you run queries without the added complexity. One example of this is with a pharmaceutical company using the cloud for genomic research. Your staff might decide to run multiple queries against the data set, but normally each one requires setup and configuration to create a cloud database that can accept the queries. With Athena, the staff can run multiple concurrent queries all at the same time but trust the results will be clean and accessible within seconds. These actionable results from queries will mean that companies have access to clean, reliable data to make better decisions and continue their research.

Another advantage to Athena related to this is a lower cost. Companies dont have to manage the footprint required for the datasets, so if they do run multiple queries or need to make decisions related to a vast treasure trove of data, they dont have to first improve the IT infrastructure or configure their data storage to handle the higher number of requests. Athena expands and retracts performance variables as needed for the queries at hand.

As mentioned earlier, Athena is flexible enough to handle a variety of tasks related to database queries. It runs standard SQL and supports standard data formats such as CSV, JSON, ORC, Avro, and Parquet. Athena uses Presto -- an open-source SQL query engine -- with ANSI SQL support, so it is not a proprietary query service users will have to learn from the ground up. Athena lets you run quick SQL queries but also supports more complex joins and arrays.

In the end, the power comes into play with Amazon Athena because it runs within Amazon S3, so all of the benefits of that object storage platform for your database carry over to Athena in terms of reducing complexity, providing the endpoint security and performance needed, and allowing companies to run multiple queries without having to manage or configure the infrastructure. Companies can focus more on the actual queries and results, not on the platform itself.

The One Best REIT To Own In 2020 – Forbes

broken chinese fortune cookie with 2020 and red hearts on the paper slip on a dark background with... [+] copy space, new year concept, high angle view from above

As my regular readers know, I am a huge proponent of diversification, as I consider it one of the best ways to sleep well at night.

However, as we roll into the New Year, I am fielding requests from readers inquiring about the best REIT to own in 2020.

So, while I purposely fulfil that request, I must provide the following disclosure, and that is that one of the best ways to mitigate risk is to carefully diversify your portfolio. By diversifying, you provide yourself with insurance that if one stock blows up, it will not severely impact your nest egg.

Digital Realty: A Data Center REIT To Own For Decades

Digital Realty (DLR) is one of the oldest data center REITs in the world, having gone public in 2004 and as of Q3-19 owned 211 data centers in 35 cities across 14 countries. The company has global exposure represented in North America (77%), Europe (13%), Asia Pacific (7%) and Latin America (3%).

The data center REITs primary business model is focused on hybrid cloud offerings, and specifically it provides co-location services, meaning that its facilities are a mix of private (in-house) and public storage solutions. Each facility has numerous small data racks and servers, which customers provide themselves.

Recently Digital Realty announced an agreement to combine with InterXion Holding, a Netherlands-based information technology services company. While strategic in nature (this $8.4 billion transaction will create a leading global provider of cloud and carrier-neutral data center solutions with an enhanced presence in high-growth major European metro areas), integration risk provides uncertainty related to execution and short-term dilution.

However, as we have observed Digital Realty over the years, we have witnessed successful M&A deals and very consistent earnings and dividend growth. Since going public in 2005 the company has generated CAGR dividend growth of 11 percent, while maintaining an impressive payout ratio (currently 73 percent).

Were confident the company can restore its long-term growth trajectory (7% forecasted in 2021) and ability to generate impressive total returns. We consider the InterXion transformative and a deal that should provide long-term growth attributes as the combined companies capitalize on emerging global digitization trends.

Digital shares are trading at $118.18 with a dividend yield of 3.7 percent. Analysts forecast FFO per share growth of 4 percent in 2020 and 8 percent in 2021. We have a Buy rating on the company with expected returns targeted at 15 percent in 2020. Give the exponential growth in 5G and cloud storage, we believe this high-quality (rated BBB by S&P) REIT could provide long-term value for decades.

I own shares in DLR
