Microsoft ready to take on Google with this new app for Android users – Times of India

Microsoft has launched a new all-in-one app -- called Microsoft Office app -- for the users of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. This app is right now available on Googles Play Store only for Android users. As per a report by Android Police, this Microsoft Office app came under testing in early 2019 and in November reached public review. With this app, the report notes, that Microsoft is taking an approach that is opposite of that of Google. Google initially had a common app Google Drive for viewing and editing docs but the company later launched multiple apps, giving users the choice to install the only apps they need. '; var randomNumber = Math.random(); var isIndia = (window.geoinfo && window.geoinfo.CountryCode === 'IN') && (window.location.href.indexOf('outsideindia') === -1 ); console.log(isIndia && randomNumber As mentioned above, Microsofts newly launched Office app that as of now doesnt offer support for tablets or Chromebooks is a combination of Microsofts Word, Excel, and PowerPoint into one. Users will be able to work on documents, spreadsheets, and presentations using this single app. It comes with templates for documents like resume, budget and even presentations. Created documents will be stored in users personal cloud storage, on your device, or across the organisation (if using a work account).Additional features of the Microsoft Office app include the ability to click a picture of a document and turn it into an editable Word file and same for a table to turn it into an Excel spreadsheet. It also gives its users the option to share files to nearby devices as well as scan QR codes to open links. The app will require users to login in the app with Microsoft Account (for OneDrive or SharePoint) or by connecting to a third-party cloud storage provider. Those who log in with a personal, work, or school Microsoft Account, which is connected to an Office 365 subscription, will unlock premium features within the app, as per Microsoft.

Look for These 4 Chances to Save During IT Improvements – FedTech Magazine

Its a common story in IT: An agency must run servers that are 5, 6 or 7 years old (including equipment that is no longer supported by the vendor) because theres no room in the budget for a full upgrade. But organizations that plan carefully may be able to achieve tangible, ongoing cost reductions as a result of infrastructure upgrades if the IT department knows where to look. Here are four areas that all organizations should explore:

No-cost data center assessments by third-party providers almost always uncover opportunities to consolidate resources which, in turn, reduces costs. Modern servers and storage appliances have become so powerful that its common to accidentally overprovision resources, and some organizations are paying for infrastructure that theyre not using.

MORE FROM FEDTECH: Follow the 5 Rs of rationalization for an effective cloud migration.

As storage needs grow, IT shops tend to simply build out more capacity without giving much thought to what resources are needed for the job. As a result, many companies are paying for Tier 1 storage solutions to store files that they seldom access. By moving this cold data to a lower tier of storage, organizations can often cut costs without negatively affecting performance.

Many agencies still do disk-to-disk backup and use tape for secondary purposes costly, complex processes. With more cloud backup and Disaster Recovery as a Service options, agencies can use the cloud for backup. Cost analysis is tricky: Cloud options may appear to be more expensive, but a more modern backup solution can provide a better ROI.

MORE FROM FEDTECH: Discover how to determine how applications will perform in the cloud before migrations.

Agencies are often skittish about moving too many resources to the public cloud too quickly, motivated by horror stories of peers that moved to the cloud, only to come back in-house after the service proved costly. By analyzing the cost of running workloads in the public cloud and comparing that with the expense of managing onsite solutions, agencies can pick cost-effective infrastructure models.

Cloud key to top 2019 data backup and disaster recovery products – TechTarget

From as-a-service platforms to protection of cloud-based data, the cloud remains a dominant player in top data backup and disaster recovery products. The cream of the crop, though, offers a wide-ranging data protection platform that can handle many kinds of workloads.

The gold winner in the data backup and disaster recovery hardware, software and services category in the Storage magazine and SearchStorage 2019 Products of the Year competition, Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery, protects and restores data "wherever," according to the vendor, and judges praised its comprehensive nature.

As is common with backup and DR products, many of the submissions to this category go beyond data protection and into management capabilities. For example, bronze winner Actifio Go enables analytics, database cloning for DevOps and cloud migration.

As in past years, security was a focus. With ransomware a prevalent threat, many vendors are including some form of cyberprotection. Silver winner Cohesity DataProtect helps fight ransomware with machine learning, for example.

The category covered data backup and recovery software; cloud backup and recovery services; and on-premises backup and DR, snapshotting, replication and archiving products. Submissions could also include data protection hardware, backup software integrated with hardware appliances, tape libraries and drives, backup media, disk backup targets and deduplication devices.

True to its name, Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery protects workloads across storage locations. It includes DR, snapshot management, endpoint and software as a service (SaaS) support, and archiving.

Updates to the product include optimized scan and multi-node backup for Nutanix File Shares, protection of Splunk clusters, backup and restore of Azure SQL Database managed instances and the ability to convert VMs from Azure to VMware.

Multiple judges described the data backup and disaster recovery product as "comprehensive." One judge called it a well-established product with a proven track record and an "ability to work with a wide range of other systems."

Judges also praised its AI capabilities, which adapt to changes to meet defined service-level agreements. The software analyzes patterns and performance and adjusts to improve outcomes.

Commvault was a finalist last year with its HyperScale Appliance HS1300.

"It is extremely important for Commvault to keep expanding their coverage to maintain their 'most comprehensive' title," one judge suggested.

For the second year in a row, Cohesity Inc.'s DataProtect has won the silver medal. The software-defined product aims to help enterprises get more value out of their data and makes security a focus.

Machine learning plays a major role in this update, aiding capacity optimization and proactive failure prediction. The antiransomware feature includes machine learning-based anomaly detection, as well as multifactor authentication.

Customers can deploy DataProtect on premises on x86 hardware platforms or virtual instances, public cloud or the edge.

One judge called the product a major upgrade with "serious improvements," such as a write-once, read-many feature for snapshots and machine learning predictive storage analytics. Several judges noted the importance of machine learning, for example, in helping enterprises obtain visibility and actionable insights on the data under protection.

"The incorporation of machine learning makes this a strong product in terms of management, security and costs," one judge said. "In addition, its support for Hadoop and NoSQL distributed data sources also makes it a valuable asset for today's workloads."

Another judge noted that the product is pricey "but worth it for large enterprises with fast-growing data footprints."

Actifio was a pioneer in copy data management. With its new product, Actifio Go, the vendor takes it up a level in the cloud and provides what it calls "copy data management as a service."

The SaaS platform offers data backup and disaster recovery, as well as management features such as analytics and migration. Customers can manage copy data in hybrid cloud or multi-cloud environments.

Actifio Go enables enterprises to back up and recover on-premises and cloud VMs to cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform and IBM. The product protects mission-critical databases including SAP HANA, Oracle, Microsoft SQL and MySQL.

One judge called Actifio Go an "ideal SaaS implementation" of copy data management. "Their ability to 'stream' recovery back on premises is particularly impressive," the judge said.

Actifio's SaaS delivery can lower infrastructure costs, one judge noted. "Multi-cloud support -- works with all major cloud vendors -- and live migration increases sources that can be protected, and targets that can be used for backup and restore, while opening up additional enterprise use cases for copy data [test and development, etc.]," the judge added.

Cloud Daddy Inc. is one of the newest entrants in the data protection market. It's made a splash already, securing the first Judges' Choice startup award as part of the Storage magazine and SearchStorage 2019 Products of the Year.

The provider of data protection for AWS workloads tackles a trifecta of data backup and disaster recovery, security and infrastructure management. One judge said Cloud Daddy Secure Backup is one of the more complete data protection products for cloud-native applications.

"Its inclusion of security and infrastructure management is unique and sets it apart from most of its competitors," the judge said.

One judge noted that the product is aimed exclusively at AWS users, but also said that it works as advertised, and the 1.5 release includes important support, such as archiving old backups to Amazon S3 Glacier.

"Cloud Daddy targets one of the biggest pain points associated with the public cloud: managing costs related to long-term data retention and data recovery," another judge wrote. "The more sophisticated data management-related capabilities it adds, including search and tagging, not only help to cut costs, but also improve enterprises' ability to recover from ransomware attacks and to meet compliance requirements."

How to Choose the Right Web Hosting

Cloud hosting is the hot darling in the web hosting space right now. This hosting category has been around for a while, but recently has really started to gain traction, even among smaller businesses. Cloud hostingwhich spreads your site across multiple serversis the most unique of all hosting types, as it lets you do many things that you could not do with the standard shared, virtual private server (VPS), dedicated, or WordPress hosting options. Let's explore those features.

Traditional hosting sees your website leverage the power of one particular server's CPU, RAM, storage, and data transfers. For example, shared web hosting has your website share resources with other sites that are also hosted exclusively on one server. The result is many annoying limitations in terms of power, and the inability to handle sharp traffic surges. For better service, you can pay for a virtual private server, or even a dedicated server of varying power. In all these case, you're basically relying on one server, and that's it. Cloud hosting, however, kicks that single-server hosting model to the curb in a marvelous manner. With cloud hosting, your website draws resources from multiple servers.

See How We Test Web Hosting Services

Cloud hosting's use of multiple servers gives it certain advantages over traditional hosting. For example, if your website experiences a sudden traffic spike, it can pull resources from another server to prevent slow page loads or, worse, the site going down. In addition, cloud hosting makes it incredibly simple for your to scale resources up or down, as needed.

Note that there are different types of cloud hosting. Traditional web hosts, such as DreamHost and HostGator, offer cloud hosting packages that are priced similarly as their other web hosting packages (typically in the Shared or VPS range). These small business-friendly cloud hosting solutions are what we're primarily focused on in this roundup.

Enterprise-level, infrastructure-as-a-service cloud hosting from the likes of Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Rackspace are also available. Though these are technically cloud hosting services, they are not what's highlighted here. For more on that flavor of expansive (and potentially more expensive!) cloud hosting, please visit our story about the best infrastructure-as-a-service solutions.

The chart above focuses on the web hosts that boast the best cloud hosting plans of all the services we've reviewed. Note that we are still in the process of examining cloud hosting offerings as this is a new categorywe're definitely going to be testing more services in the coming months. Still, with the reviews we've done so far and lots of research, we've discovered what you should look for in a cloud hosting service.

Many cloud web hosts offer unlimited monthly data transfers, so other factors may help you decide which service is best for your business. That said, if you're interested in "unlimited" anything, no matter if it's data or storage, be sure to read the tiny print to make sure that there aren't any surprises. In other words, make sure your definition of unlimited matches the hosting service's definition. They can be two very different things.

Speaking of storage, we've discovered that cloud hosts typically offer hard drives or solid-state drives that range between 100GB and 200GB in size. That said, you'll occasionally discover a web host that boasts unlimited storage. (Again, the usual caveats apply with regards to "unlimited" anything.) Solid-state drives are typically faster than their hard-drive-based counterparts, but are typically smaller in terms of storage capacity. If you're looking for sheer volume, a traditional hard drive is the way to go.

When it comes to server operating systems, Linux is typically the default option. Still, some services offer Windows hosting, too. If you have specific server-side applications that require Windows, such as SQL Server or a custom application written in .NET, then you need to make sure your web host has Windows hosting.

You'll also want a web host with responsive 24/7 customer support. Forums, knowledge bases, and tutorials are useful tools, but there's nothing like getting another human being on the horn (or at least in a web chat) when problems arise.

Security is of utmost importance, too. If your goal is to sell products or services, you need to look into Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS). Those technologies encrypt the data that travel's between a customer's computer and your company's servers to safeguard the information from people with ill intentions.

In each of our reviews, we devote an entire section to uptime, it's so important. Simply put, if your site is down, clients or customers will be unable to find your business or access your products or services. They may find what they're looking for elsewhere, and never return. At the very least, customers will be annoyed, and it won't help their image of your business. Neither is a good outcome.

Three years ago, we added formal uptime monitoring to our review process, and the results show that most web hosts do an excellent job of keeping their sites up and running. If they don't, they suffer for it in our rankings. Even if they get everything else right, sites with uptime problems aren't eligible for top scores. All services suffer ups and downs, sometimes for reasons beyond their control. Those sites that fail to address the problem are penalized accordingly.

Mahomes Tech is a new exciting Web & App Development company, but why did you decide to start Mahomes Tech?

I also found development interesting. I used to develop a lot of different things for fun. I loved having some abstract idea and being able to bring it to physical form. It was a form of creative expression for me. A couple of my friends began asking me for help and advice on projects that required expertise. I realized that I had an extremely valuable skill, and I could make a business out of it. I particularly wanted to provide affordable service for socioeconomically disadvantaged entrepreneurs. At that point my passion met my purpose. Out of this combination Mahomes Tech was born.

With all the thousands of Development companies out there, why does your company stand out?Mahomes Tech is a development company, but we offer much more than that. What type of business should use websites and apps?In todays economy every business. Technology has taken over the world, and business is no different. Having a website or an app enables users to reach customers all over the world. In order to increase efficiency and be competitive these are required. For a business to continue reaching their goals its important to have high quality development. The age of brick and mortar has come and gone. We now live in the age of technology.

With WordPress and Joomla being two popular website platforms, which one would you recommend for a small business owner just starting out?

I would not recommend either sites for someone who is serious about their business. If I had to choose Id say WordPress because its more user friendly. Prioritizing whats important for your business is vital for new entrepreneurs. You should leave development to experts to ensure you have a high quality product. Cyber attacks are at an all time high. This poses a huge threat to consumers. As specialists in the field we have expertise to keep you safe and your customers safe.

If a business owner wanted to increase their website traffic, is this something your company could offer?

Yes we offer digital marketing, branding, and campaign management services. We understand that these are vital components to having a successful business. We tailor our strategy to fit the unique needs of our client. A service can be fantastic, but if there isnt proper marketing then it wont be successful. We dont want successful projects, we want successful businesses.

A lot of people are confused about social media, is social media really that important and if so, which social media is the more important one?

Yes social media is really that important. There are billions of social media users all across the world. It has connecting people in such a way that has never been seen before. Along with social medias popularity came influence. Social media dramatically impacts consumer behavior. They are also arguably the most efficient way to build your brand today. I think the most important social media depends on the type of business you have. There tends to be different demographics more active on some than others. Depending on the service and target demographic will determine the most important social media.

Your prices for Development are very low, how do you manage to keep them so low?

To stay true to our mission. Mahomes Tech is a labor of love. We want to provide services to entrepreneurs who cant afford high cost development. We offer many new options for our clients as they earn more profit. In order for a business to grow they need our services. We dont have to make millions. Take care of ERP data security when moving to the cloud – TechTarget

ERP data is often described as a company's "crown jewels" because it contains a trove of valuable information. Customer data, inventory, budgets, payroll and sales orders are all types of data that ERP systems hold and transact.

Yet for all that value, ERP data security is an often unsung topic and ERP systems can be vulnerable to security threats. That's especially the case for organizations moving from on-premises systems to cloud-based systems.

In the first of a two-part series, Greg Wendt, executive director of security for Appsian in Dallas, discusses what organizations need to consider about ERP data security as the cloud becomes more prevalent.

Appsian provides ERP security services primarily for SAP and Oracle PeopleSoft systems, including access control, compliance and audit, and threat protection.

What are a few of the main ERP data security issues that organizations face today?

Greg Wendt: Historically, ERP implementations have been on-premises and they've been some of the later [systems] to shift into cloud-based environments, but this is changing. What we are seeing more of is that some organizations are [moving ERP systems to] either a cloud hyperscaler like an AWS, a vendor-specific cloud or a hosting provider. But across the board, we are seeing that the security departments inside these organizations are definitely concerned as to what's happening with this and who has access to the data once this occurs. Typically, when ERP shifts to the cloud, most of the development instances have a full copy of production, so they have the same sensitive data as production does. A lot of these organizations are attempting to change that, so they don't have that level of information in all of these different systems.

What are some of the concerns that people have about moving to the cloud?

Wendt: Let's say you go into a hosted environment where the vendor not only runs the hardware and the software for you, but also administers the application. The vendor is actually logging into your application, and it has powerful accounts that can get into your application set. So you have to ask: What is the vendor accessing? What is it seeing?

Some organizations are very apprehensive to move to the cloud because of those security concerns. They don't want all of that private, sensitive data in an area where they might not have full control over it. So we're seeing a shift to controls around the data, whether it's multi-factor authentication or data masking, especially for those accounts that are based on who may be accessing what type of data or if it's private, personal information type of data. What we've seen is a layering in of a lot of those controls especially throughout the development stack, not just the production implementation, because of that full realm of private data sitting throughout the development stack.

Are there other reasons why organizations might be reluctant to move ERP systems to the cloud?

Wendt: These are often mission-critical systems, so you have to talk about disaster recovery and what happens if your network gets cut or severed. At an organization that I worked with in the past, we had a lot of construction going on around it and we had our up-to-the-internet cut three different times within a year. They cut the fiber lines, which aren't exactly quick and easy to fix. So you could be down for 24 to 48 hours. If you're on-premises, you still have access to all of those systems. But if it's in the cloud, you don't because you can't get there.

Is there anything particular about ERP systems that makes them more vulnerable?

Wendt: ERPs have become more of a challenge because they're not necessarily as clear-cut to define and find out who has access to what information. A lot of ERPs are now built to where they're metadata-driven applications, so you have to understand that metadata to really understand what a user is accessing. For example, when you look at PeopleSoft, to understand what a field is at the database level, you have to look at how that is defined and how it's built within the PeopleTool layer of the ERP system. Because of the complexity of ERPs, whether it's PeopleSoft or SAP, it does make it more challenging to understand what people are doing.

What are some measures organizations can take to improve ERP data security?

Wendt: Definitely from an implementation of security level, it needs to be contextual-based security inside of the application. If you think of the ways you utilize your applications, maybe based upon how you're accessing that application, you have to have data that's either masked or you have to do stepped up multi-factor authentication. You can also control access to that particular transaction based upon where the user is coming from. These are very contextual, attribute-based controls that are layered into the application and that gives the control back to the organization. Because typically once you go to an internet-enabled application, many of these ERP applications are just user ID and password authenticated, so they're vulnerable once a hacker gets a hold of those credentials. This is why the phishing attacks are so successful, because they get access to that system and all the roles and transactions that that user has access to. That's where you want to enforce least-privileged access when they're coming in from an untrusted location. That's where you come into extra layers of protection and decide through those attributes what somebody should really be able to do, see or edit.

Dish gets its day in the sun, becomes No. 4 US wireless carrier – FierceWireless

As a result of todays ruling by Judge Victor Marrero in favor of a merger between Sprint and T-Mobile, Dish will enter the U.S. wireless market as the fourth major nationwide facilities-based wireless operator. The Denver-based satellite video provider has committed to deploy a 5G broadband network capable of serving 70% of the U.S. population by June 2023.

But it will quickly get into the wireless business as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), running on New T-Mobiles network, comprised of the combined networks of Sprint and T-Mobile.

In his ruling (PDF), Judge Marrero said that "the Court is persuaded that the presence of Dish as a new entrant will constitute a substantial incentive to competition... Dish is undeniably well-equipped to enter the market by virtue of its large spectrum portfolio, which is worth roughly $22 billion and rivals Verizon's in size. This large spectrum position combines significant quantities of both low-and mid-band spectrum capable of supporting highly data-intensive consumer uses.

Marrero also mentioned the existence of currently confidential and creative strategic partnerships that Dish is planning. These mystery partners came up during the trial in Marreros court when Dish Chairman Charlie Ergen mentioned potentially partnering with others outside the wireless industry who may want to bundle wireless with their products.

In his ruling, Marrero said these partnerships lead him to believe that Dish would compete as a disruptive maverick, offering low prices for innovative and high- quality services.

We appreciate Judge Marreros thorough evaluation of this merger, said Ergenin a statement today. The ruling, in addition to the DoJ and FCC approvals, accelerates our ability to deploy the nations first virtualized, standalone 5G network and bring 5G to America."

Dish has said it will look to cutting-edge networking technologies, such as those being deployed by Rakuten in Japan, to quickly build a network that is far more modern than its wireless competitors Verizon, AT&T and the New T-Mobile.

Marrero noted Dishs plan to construct a network built on virtualization principles, and said, Dish plans to construct a virtualized network that relies more heavily on software and cloud-hosting services provided by potential partners like Amazon. This measure promises to cut installation and maintenance costs, such that Dishcurrently projects network constructions costs of roughly $8-10 billion.

Eleven vendors have already indicated they could deliver to Dish a virtualized core network in the first quarter of 2020. Marrero was also impressed that Dish plans to operate an open radio access network. This is something that U.S. senators have championed because it means the wireless operator is not dependent on a particular vendor, such as Huawei, for the RAN equipment.

Dish has been assembling a team of wireless executives in anticipation, and hope, that the T-Mobile/Sprint deal would get approved, paving its way to build a national 5G network. In November Dish announced the hires of two senior wireless industry leaders. Marc Rouanne, formerly with Nokia, is working at Dish as chief network officer. And Stephen Bye, who most recently served as CEO of Connectivity Wireless, and who had formerly been a CTO at Sprint, is leading the Dish wireless enterprise development team whose mission is to market commercial applications and to establish strategic enterprise partnerships.

Boost

In todays statement Ergen also said, We are eager to begin serving Boost customers while aggressively growing the business as a new competitor, bringing lower prices, greater choice and more innovation to consumers. We look forward to the Boost employees and dealers joining the Dish family.

In his ruling, Marrero noted that Boost's distribution model is already quite similar to that of Dish and that Boost customers will have the benefit of the New T-Mobile network rather than the decidedly poorer-quality Sprint network.

RELATED: Industry Voices If the T-Mobile, Sprint deal closes, Dish will need a retail strategy

Industry analyst Jeff Moore has said that Dish will need to quickly develop a retail strategy.Boost has been a prepaid brand with outlets in urban areas. Moore said, "I think Dish should keep Boost as its prepaid brand, andI think Dish is likely to use its own brand for the postpaid service, although it will take time to establish a brand as a wireless service."

Moore noted that the retail strategies of prepaid and postpaid are very different.

Three-year-old partner Solution Tech buys thirty-year-old partner Modern Computer System – CRN Australia

Perth-based MSP Solution Tech has acquired 30-year-old IT company Modern Computer Systems, bringing with it a 1500-strong customer base.

Founded in 1989, Modern Computer Systems is based on Balcatta, WA, and focuses on IT support, server solutions, email hosting and other traditional software and hardware.

The company served over 1500 customers , mostly SMEs, though not all of those are active. It employs three staff, all of whom will be retained.

Solution Techs technical director Roy Borekar told CRN that he saw an opportunity to rapidly expand into the SME market by acquiring Modern Computer Systems.

Modern Computer does not offer a cloud play practice beyond Office365 licenses, which presented another opportunity for Solution Tech to offer its own cloud and security services.

The acquisition comes off the back of Solution Techs Canberra 2019 expansion into Canberra, to target government business. The company now operates with two branches that focus on two market segments: WA specialising in SME and Canberra specialising in government. Solution Tech also recently signed on as a reseller for enterprise security vendor CyberArk.

Solution Tech was founded in 2016, specialising in cloud, infrastructure, security and support services.
