Why Is Google Cutting Jobs in Its Cloud Unit? – Market Realist

Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is cutting about four dozen positions in its cloud computing division, according to CNBC. The job cuts are part of a restructuring plan to improve operations in the cloud unit.

Under the stewardship of Thomas Kurian, Googles cloud unit has focused a lot of its attention and resources on winning over large enterprise customers. Kurian joined Google from Oracle (NASDAQ:ORCL) in late 2018. He started in his new role at Google in January 2019.

Notably, the job cuts come at a time when Google has been on a hiring spree for the cloud business. Recently, most of Googles new hires have ended up at the division. The companys cloud hiring has mainly been for marketing and technical teams.

Google aims to triple its cloud salesforce as it races to catch market leaders Amazon and Microsoft. Last year, Kurian disclosed that Google lagged the market leaders in terms of its salesforce. He said that the companys cloud salesforce was just about one-tenth of Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Microsofts (NASDAQ:MSFT) salesforce.

Currently, Amazon dominates the global cloud market with a 33% market share. Microsoft is second with an 18% market share. Meanwhile, Google is third with about an 8.0% market share.

Google has set its sights on becoming one of the worlds top cloud companies in the next five years. The company is very focused on a big break in the cloud market. Google has contemplated exiting the cloud business if it doesnt become one of the top-two vendors within its target period.

In addition to expanding its cloud salesforce, Google wants to equip its cloud team with executives who can help it win over large enterprise customers.

For example, Kurian worked for more than two decades at Oracle before he joined Google. Oracle is one of the global leaders in the enterprise software market. Google has also staffed its cloud division with executives from enterprise software giants Microsoft and SAP SE (NYSE:SAP).

The companys cloud business generated $8.9 billion in revenue in 2019, which indicates tremendous growth from $5.8 billion in revenue in 2018. Some experts think that the companys cloud sales could hit $38 billion in 2025.

Google parent Alphabet counts on the cloud business in addition to other ventures like Waymo to diversify its revenue sources. Currently, advertising sales contribute nearly 90% of Alphabets revenue, which indicates a potentially risky revenue concentration considering the changing advertising market.

Cohesity today announced a new solution that extends and enhances its enterprise-class capabilities for the enterprise edge, empowering organizations to seamlessly manage data within remote office/branch office (ROBO) locations with a single software-defined platform -- the same web-scale platform that many organizations use today to manage data across existing data center and cloud environments.

The new Cohesity solution for ROBO combines Cohesity software with certified servers from Cisco and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and is designed for enterprises with numerous branch locations, such as national banks, retailers, chain restaurants, rental car agencies, warehousing and distribution, pharmaceutical, and global IT services. Managing Rapidly Growing Data Across Remote Office Locations

More than half of enterprise data will be created and processed outside the data center or cloud by 2022, according to a report from the research firm IDC. This underscores the need for a unified approach to manage and protect data generated or stored at the edge in the same manner as enterprise data located centrally or managed in public cloud environments.

The Cohesity solution for ROBO addresses administrative, latency, and bandwidth concerns at remote locations while at the same time complying with data recoverability concerns and compliance mandates of corporate headquarters. G-Core spreads its cloud and edge connectivity to London – Data Economy

Vilnius expects the move to drive up job creation to at least 2,000 new vacancies in the market in the next five years.

Lithuania hasapproved an exemption from corporate tax, currently at 15%, for companiesmaking large investments within its national territory.

The approvalof the amendment to the Law on Corporation Tax from the Ministry of the Economyand Innovation on an exemption from corporate tax will facilitate thedevelopment of local and foreign capital-based large investment projects at anational level, including in free economic zones.

The draft onthe law, which is being submitted to the Seimas (Lithuanias parliament) forconsideration, and a package of draft laws on investment known as the greencorridor (which has already been submitted to the Seimas) both propose aprecise definition of a large investment project.

According tothese laws, a large investment project constitutes a project in dataprocessing, internet server services and related activities, or manufacturing,where the value of investment in fixed assets is at least EUR 30 million andwhich will create at least 200 new jobs that are to be maintained for fiveyears.

The movecomes as the Baltic nation continues to push for further national and foreigninvestment across a range of sectors, including IT infrastructure.

For datacentres, the EUR 30 million figure is one that is usually easily reachable by operatorsand investors when building new facilities, especially large scale.

At Data Economys Finvest Summit 2020 in Zurich, Switzerland, Vice-Minister for Economy and Innovation Elijus Civilis told the audience of Lithuanias plans to attract large data centre and other IT infrastructure investments.

The countryhas set up a data centre park close to the capital, Vilnius, where the sitecurrently offers 85MW of power with an additional 120MW of power available atcustom request.

The corporate tax incentive and the green corridor package eliminate this shortcoming, and also mean that investors will benefit from faster procedures in a number of areas including territorial planning, construction, land-use planning, and migration, he said.

Outwood Trust Academies opts for cloud-like technology, without the cost – Diginomica

Established in 2009, Outwood Grange Academies Trust is a multi-academy trust that operates 32 schools with Academy status across northern England and the East Midlands. An exempt charity, regulated by the Department for Education, it works as an educational charity and not-for-profit sponsor of primary, junior and secondary schools of this type and so is regulated by the Department for Education rather than the Charity Commission. All its schools are funded by the Department for Education on a per-pupil basis, the same way as maintained schools.

Essentially, then, Outwood Trust provides a range of support services to these Academy schools. So thats over 30,000 students who have records of attendance and educational progress that youd really want to think were being properly protected. But until five years ago, admits its assistant director of technology, MatthewLister, that unfortunately wasnt the case:

I've been working for the Trust now for five years, and when I came on board the director of technology identified that we had no effective Disaster Recovery (DR) strategy at all. There were real concerns with our backup and DR, and back then we only had six Academies.

There were a lot of inconsistencies throughout those Academies, with different backup technologies that they usedalmost every single Academy had a different piece of software, some had tape, some had hard drives. If I'm being honest, there was no DR plan, plus we couldnt rely on our old system to do successful restores, and tests took hours.

Sounds less than ideal, but you might ask, well, why would you need a DR plan if you're a school?

Its the same as any other organisation; we need business continuity to be able to continue teaching our students. In every single Academy we will back up the critical data, especially the management information system data, but also all the student files and records as well as everything to do with HR, payroll, all that data.

Thats critical data that is necessary for a student to go through their school life and for the school to run. I went to a school last week that is not one of our Academies and very little of this important information was being backed up there, and there are still schools that have no backup which I find almost staggering in this day and age.

So what did Lister do to fix this problem? As is quite logical, he went out to market and after investigation opened an initial tender process.

We looked at various options out there, and we looked at things like Symantec and Veeam, Barracuda and so on. We tried all the software out there, basically, making our pro pros and cons list of all we evaluated. But quite frankly, most were just too expensive.

Luckily, the actual final choice was introduced by a colleague Miller knew who was working at a different school, a technology called Arscerve. That was a solution, he states, that allowed Outwood to build its own servers and so were able to just install the software, which saved him what he calls quite a bit of money.

For us, it was incredibly easy to do; we were very comfortable, and as Arscerve is essentially an offsite backup product, this was very useful for us and I estimate weve saved around 500,000 over the period doing it this way as opposed to the alternatives on offer. Thats because we had a presence in our datacentre for other services, we can very easily replicate all our data offsite really quite easily, and at what we see as minimal cost.

For example, deduplication has meant we havent had to buy any more storage; in one seven-day period, the amount of recoverable data we had increased by 120 terabytes, but the amount of stored data had only increased by 0.5 terabytes, for example.

Specifically, Outwood now has DR in place for 569 servers (10% physical and 90% virtual), protecting a total volume of raw data of 2 petabytes which has been drastically reduced via this software, down to more like 270 terabytes through deduplication and compression. In fact, its largest Academy, Outwood Grange Academy in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, has seen its original 1,500 terabytes of recoverable data reduced to just under 30 terabytes. And in terms of DR functionality, as Outwood has a backup server in each Academy backed up each night and the data then automatically replicated to its datacentre, if a school ever experienced significant data loss, the data is safe and can be spun up within three or four minutes.

So happy is Miller with his solution here that when we asked what might change if diginomica/government came back to speak to him in six months time, he genuinely expects, well, not a lot:

I don't see the need for much to change at all, if I'm honest, over the next few years; there's no reason for us to change, as this works so well for us. Its a stress-free solution that does its job reliably and quickly and which has also freed up resources so we can deliver cloud benefits without the associated costs.
