Artificial Intelligence Controlled Submarines Are Developed By The US Navy – Maritime Herald

Post sponsored by the Toronto Jobs Where everybody is looking to earn more money

The Artificial Intelligence could carry out attacks without human supervision, a breakthrough technology and also a great risk

The project called CLAWS is directed by the Office of Naval Research, which is responsible for the science and technology programs of the United States Navy and Marine Corps.

Budget documents discovered by New Scientist describe CLAWS as an autonomous system of unmanned submarine weapons that could be installed in underwater robots such as the Orca submarine vehicle developed by Boeing. which can be armed with 12 torpedo tubes that could be controlled by CLAWS without any human intervention.

It will clandestinely extend the reach of large UUVs [ unmanned underwater vehicles] and increase mission areas for kinetic purposes, the documents read .

CLAWS was first revealed in 2018 as an attempt to improve the autonomy and survival of large and extra-large unmanned underwater vehicles, however, until now the capacity of the weapons had not been mentioned, according to New Scientist.

Lethal autonomous weapons

Budget documents reveal that CLAWS has been allocated USD 26 million this year and another 23 million for the next, and it is known that they will be used to develop the idea in a functional submarine prototype .

Stuart Russell, a professor of computer science at the University of California, who described CLAWS as a dangerous development, explained: Equipping a fully autonomous underwater vehicle with lethal weapons is a significant step, and one that runs the risk of accidental climbing in a way that does not apply to marine mines.

Chinese scientists hope to deploy unmanned military submarines in the worlds oceans in the early 2020s, although the final decision on whether to attack will still be taken by commanders, for now the developments suggest that a new front is opening in the career arms of IA at sea.

The rush to develop autonomous and lethal underwater weapons is becoming a growing concern for activists such as the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots, which has attracted the support of technological luminaries such as Elon Musk of Tesla and Mustafa Suleyman of Alphabet, are backed by German Foreign Minister Heiko Maasban, who urged states to ban totally autonomous weapons , before its too late!

Amazon: Linux-based Bottlerocket is our new OS for hosting containers in the cloud – ZDNet

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has released a public preview of a new Linux-based operating system that it has built specifically to run containers on virtual machines or bare-metal hosts in the cloud.

The new OS for containers and the growing number of containerized applications promise to make the automation of package updates easier via container orchestration services like Amazon EKS. Amazon initially wants developers to use the Bottlerocket as a host OS in AWS EKS Kubernetes clusters.

Bottlerocket OS only includes what's necessary to run containers to make it more efficient and more secure, according to AWS.

The new Linux-based OS is in public preview for now and is scheduled for general availability later this year.

The bottleneck it aims to address results from the need to update application software packages within container images, which requires separate updates for the container and the host OS.

"Instead of a package update system, Bottlerocket uses a simple, image-based model that allows for a rapid and complete rollback if necessary. This removes opportunities for conflicts and breakage, and makes it easier for you to apply fleet-wide updates with confidence using orchestrators such as EKS," explained AWS evangelist Jeff Barr.

Bottlerocket supports Docker images and images based on the Open Container Initiative (OCI) image format, which ensures broad support for Linux containers.

The goal is similar to Red Hat's CoreOS Container Linux, which is being shuttered on May 26 as Red Hat develops Fedora CoreOS for running containerized workloads. Fedora CoreOS currently doesn't support Azure, DigitalOcean, Google Compute Engine and other Container Linux platforms.

Barr highlights some of the areas where Bottlerocket has been pared back for security: the file system is "primarily read-only" and is integrity-checked at boot time. Additionally, secure shell (SSH) access isn't enabled by default and is part of a separate admin container that runs with elevated privileges and can be enabled as needed for troubleshooting.

Interestingly, most of Bottlerocket has been written in Rust due to the language's ability to address memory security bugs, which Microsoft is also exploring for the same reason in low-level Windows components and its secure infrastructure programming initiative Project Verona. Google has also explored Rust for its new OS Fuchsia.

"Almost all first-party components are written in Rust. Rust eliminates some classes of memory safety issues, and encourages design patterns that help security," AWS says on its Bottlerocket page on GitHub.

Bottlerocket currently includes packages for the Linux kernel, glibc, Buildroot, GRUB, systemd, Wicket, container, Kubernetes, and aws-iam-authenticator.

The new release includes the PTC FlexPLM samples console: a new, dedicated module designed to provide clarity, visibility, and comprehensive control to product developers and technical designers who struggle to manage multiple iterations of the product sampling process across many seasons, resulting in managing several hundred samples at any given point in time.

Samples often represent critical-line review milestones during the go-to-market process. When you consider all of the cross-functional teams involved and the amount of time dedicated to spec development, there is no doubt that sample tracking is a crucial business process. It consumes a significant amount of time and money, which makes accurate tracking essential. Cybersecurity in a time of coronavirus – Accounting Today

Tax season is one of the peak times of the year for cybercrime. Part of the reason the season can be so lucrative for cybercriminals is because of the increased vulnerability of human targets many people depend on their tax return to pay bills, and so are easy victims to emails claiming there is a problem with their filing or promising more money if they file with someone else, while professional preparers are stressed out, overworked and trying to process vast amounts of information.

But taxes are not the only thing that make people emotionally and psychologically more vulnerable to scams. Anything that heightens fear and anxiety is a boon to online scammers, which is what makes the current coronavirus pandemic prime time for cybercriminals to try and trick people into giving their money away to the wrong people. This week, the U.S. Secret Service issued guidance around coronavirus-related phishing scams.

Cybercriminals are exploiting the coronavirus through the wide distribution of mass emails posing as legitimate medical and or health organizations, the guidance reads. In one particular instance, victims have received an email purporting to be from a medical/health organization that included attachments supposedly containing pertinent information regarding the coronavirus. This led to either unsuspecting victims opening the attachment, causing malware to infect their system, or prompting the victim to enter their email login credentials to access the information resulting in harvested login credentials.

The guidance goes on to note that a rise in teleworking, which the accounting profession is now exploring in full force, increases the risk of cyberattacks that prey on employee anxieties.

Phishing emails are the easiest method of attack that cybercriminals have, explained Monique Becenti, product and channel specialist at SiteLock, a website security solutions provider. Especially with workers in highly affected locations like Seattle and California starting to work remotely, companies should be communicating cybersecurity best practices dont click on links; dont download any attachments. Cybercriminals could also take advantage of remote work by impersonating someone from HR.

More and more firms are issuing notices to their staff, giving them the option to work from home, with all the support they can provide and no penalization for making this choice. National tax firms are leading the charge, as they are in a time of increased client contact and longer office hours.

AbacusNext, which provides cloud hosting and related tools to professional services firms, has been advising their customers on how to approach going suddenly virtual. Some firms are more prepared than others, but even if a firm is less prepared, there are tools they can quickly put in place to lessen the risk of security breaches. Client portals for secure document transfer, for instance, are very useful, as are e-signature tools so that clients dont have to sign anything in person; and VPN (virtual private network) services, which can be very inexpensive, and allow staff to access firm software platforms securely.

The CDC has said, we dont want you to panic, but why not dust off your preparedness plans and review them, said Nicole Fluty, product manager for AbacusNexts OfficeTools products. As a tech provider, we are definitely part of those plans.

When looking for these tech tools quickly, including VPNs, Becenti advised to Google best X tool, and look at reviews for the top five or so to make sure you are buying a legitimate service because another side effect of last-minute planning can be to fall victim to another layer of scams, such as VPN providers that actually steal data.

Some VPN services are very cost effective, around $3.99 just for a license monthly, Becenti said. Look for one that doesnt keep any logs; doesnt affect browsing speeds; has DNS [domain name system] leak protection; and offers 24/7 US-based support.

How to pick the right third-party CI/CD tool for the cloud – TechTarget

A deployment pipeline is one of the most critical pieces of infrastructure in an application environment. Without it, agile software development feels more like the old waterfall model, as you labor through the standard cycle of develop, test and deploy. This is where a reliable CI/CD pipeline comes into play.

Most cloud-focused organizations have adopted continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines to automate many of the processes associated with software development. These pipelines reduce the lead-time from development to deployment from months to hours, but only if you pick the right CI/CD tool.

CI/CD is one of the most established categories of DevOps tools, and IT teams can choose from an extensive number of third-party CI/CD offerings. There are managed options that specialize in a single technology stack and self-hosted tools that offer more customization. There are also CI/CD tools that run through a collaborative code repository, such as GitHub. But having access to all these options makes it hard to know which tool best fits your needs.

In this third-party CI/CD tool comparison, we'll go over the three types of tools and some of the top options in each category. This should give you an idea of how CI/CD can help your organization.

Before we get into the third-party tools, let's first distinguish them from what's offered natively on the major public clouds. AWS, Microsoft and Google each offer their own CI/CD pipeline tools -- including AWS CodeBuild, Azure Pipelines and Google Cloud Build -- tailored to their platforms. These services often lag behind third-party CI/CD tools, whether it is due to a lack of support for a given technology stack, poor version control integration or limited feature sets. The cloud-native options can also increase vendor lock-in and make it difficult to adopt a multi-cloud infrastructure.

Unlike the cloud vendors' offerings, third-party CI/CD tools integrate with a wide range of other tools and services. This gives you more flexibility because you're not limited to a single cloud vendor or a small subset of languages and tool support.

Application development takes a lot of work. Larger organizations can often adapt to growing infrastructure needs, but smaller companies are not always so fortunate. Managed offerings are an excellent way to bootstrap a CI/CD pipeline.

Travis CI, CircleCI and CodeShip are popular managed CI/CD tools that, for a fee, take care of server management, patching, dependencies and other tasks, so you can focus on moving code into production. Each tool takes its own CI/CD pipeline approach, but at a high level, they're easy to configure and support an impressive number of integrations.

However, be mindful of your usage. While these tools are generally affordable at a small scale, they get more expensive as your infrastructure grows. Organizations often move from a managed CI/CD tool to a self-hosted offering when their infrastructure permanently scales up.

Organizations can manage CI/CD themselves if they don't want to trust a third-party provider to host, maintain, manage and secure their delivery pipeline. This provides more flexibility, as well as more responsibility.

Popular self-hosted CI/CD tools such as Jenkins and Drone have their own hosting and management overheads, but as open source projects, they're exceptionally configurable.

As with all open source projects, one of the biggest advantages is that it's free. However, you do have to pay for the infrastructure it runs on, which can become costly if you aren't careful with the resources your pipeline requires.

The final CI/CD category worth highlighting is CI/CD tools built around collaborative code repositories such as GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket.

These CI/CD tools are popular with companies that already rely on these vendors, as this can simplify the collaborative aspect of software development. Tight integration between the code repository that development teams rely on and the build process that validates that code can make a big difference in the dev-test cycle time.

However, these tools are not as mature as other, more extensive options on this CI/CD tools list. While GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket introduce a lot of flexibility through Docker-based configuration -- a tactic supported by the majority of CI/CD tools -- this CI/CD capability is intended to be a supplemental feature of their primary version-control system. These collaborative code repository CI/CD tools can feel limited compared to the managed and self-hosted options.

Focus on the tool that can best grow with your needs. If your infrastructure growth is slow and predictable, a managed service like Travis CI or CodeShip should work. If you are in a rapid-growth state, then a self-hosted option will scale more cost-effectively. And, if you want to keep your code and build tools all together, rather than spreading yourself too thin, consider the CI/CD tool available through your code repository provider.
