There has never been a more compelling time to be in the API integration and management software business. From new technologies such as cloud-based microservices to 5G, from the Industrial Internet of Things to non-digital disruptive events such as the pandemic, change is accelerating. Global supply chain fault lines have been exposed by the tectonic shifts in economies, driving the need for ever more sophisticated integration.

The reason is simple. A fractured, non-digitalized enterprise cannot hope to survive, never mind compete anymore. The pace of change and the pace of reaction are just too fast. Half answers from disconnected enterprise assets, resulting in ill-founded decisions or business reaction times that are too slow to be effective, were once just the bad business practices of yesterday. Today they are fatal.

As we get into the core of these issues with customers, we have seen that business resilience during these turbulent times has been firmly based on digital fluency. Successful enterprises are bending but not breaking and are rebounding to business as unusual with impressive speed.

Microservices and API frameworks are at the heart of this fluency. Application architectures built on microservices are providing the speed, scalability and flexibility fundamental to digital business models. How? By providing a better approach to integration via consumable, interoperable services all based on the same underlying data model and well-defined, secure APIs.

It's particularly important to get integration right with microservices, because of the myriad connection paths and constantly changing ecosystem. Without the right level of integration, governance and control, your IT infrastructure will resemble the Wild West.

At Software AG, we call this integration Dynamic' because there are so many things within the infrastructure that can move around. Data can be migrated; virtual machines can move or change in a heartbeat. To handle this type of integration, many have turned to the concept of the service mesh. In brief, a service mesh provides the abstraction needed to adapt and communicate in an ever-changing cloud deployment environment.

Think of a service mesh as an infrastructure layer to help microservices communicate via business APIs. This layer can add increased observability, ensure secure communications, and manage failed requests.

However, we don't believe that a service mesh takes this far enough.

Why the service mesh needs more semantics

Service mesh is a necessary basis for running an environment that uses microservices, but it is only a basis. It evolved to better manage communications between microservices, but it is also a fairly technical concept. What's more, it's not addressing fundamental application management features. A service mesh is like a steering wheel on a carit's fundamental, but on its own it isn't going to get you very far.

What we need goes beyond that. A proper microservices architecture is like the satellite navigation and the driverless capability on that car. It automatically exposes all microservices as semantic-rich APIs. What that means is that you can:

Cloud Repatriation: Why It’s More Than ‘Just’ Public Cloud Retreat – ITPro Today

What happens when you migrate to the cloud, then decide the cloud's just not working out? The answer is cloud repatriation, a strategy that has grown increasingly popular in recent years, with 80% of companies reporting plans to repatriate at least some of the workloads that they currently host in the public cloud.

At first glance, you might read statistics like these as evidence that there will be a massive shift back to on-premises architectures. Yet the reality is that cloud repatriation is more complex and nuanced. In many cases, its not about readopting the same on-premises configurations that companies were using prior to public cloud adoption; its more about taking advantage of new hybrid cloud opportunities or finding better ways to integrate on-premises workloads with public cloud services.

Heres a look at what cloud repatriation means, why it has become a popular trend and how to craft the most effective cloud repatriation strategy--which typically requires more than just rebuilding the on-premises infrastructure you relied on before migrating to the cloud.

Put simply, cloud repatriation is the process of moving applications or data that currently run in the public cloud to an infrastructure other than the public cloud.

For example, you might have virtual machines hosted on a service like Amazon EC2 or Azure Virtual Machines that you migrate back to an on-premises data center. Or, you may replace a SaaS application running in the public cloud with one hosted on a private or hybrid cloud.

Organizations may opt for cloud repatriation for several reasons. They range from a determination that cloud costs turn out to be more expensive than anticipated to the realization that the cloud is not always ideal for certain needs (such as backup and recovery, where cloud-based backups may take longer to restore to an on-premises system than backups that are hosted locally).

The simplistic assumption about cloud repatriation is that it means more organizations will shift back to an on-premises model, with cloud architectures becoming less important as a result.

But the reality is more complex. Although for some organizations cloud repatriation means simply converting workloads back to an on-premises model, for others it entails migrating to more sophisticated types of cloud-based architectures, not abandoning the cloud altogether.

In Contrast to ‘Permanent Remote Work,’ VMware Messaging Touts ‘Return-to-Office’ – Virtualization Review

Virtualization kingpin VMware was quick to tout its wares for the remote work explosion caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, but its recent messaging has shifted to a "return-to-office" theme in a sign that the company may be looking forward to a recovery period soon.

That messaging centers around the company's Workspace ONE product, which is described as a digital workspace solution delivering and managing apps on any device by bundling together identity, application, and enterprise mobility management.

That messaging seems to be in contrast to other vendors who are still touting their solutions to suit a "new normal" of permanent remote work. The company's new messaging also comes at a time when news reports are citing rising positive coronavirus cases and death tolls in many areas and debate rages about reopening schools and directives to wear masks and practice social distancing.

Amid all that, VMware this week said: "However, a recent CNBC study surveying executives at firms across sectors of the economy found that many large corporations expect to return more than half of their employees back to offices as soon as September."

VMware did, however, acknowledge that office work environments won't be the same, even if employees do come back. "Employees left their tight-knit cubicles back at the office in March, and it's likely that they won't be working in close quarters with their coworkers for quite some time," the company said.

VMware indicated what it views as the "new normal" with this statement: "A remote-everything, work-from-anywhere environment is now the new normal."
