Facebook and Carnegie Mellon launch project to discover better ways to store renewable energy – VentureBeat

Facebook today announced a partnership with Carnegie Mellon University on a research project the Open Catalyst Project that will leverage AI to accelerate the search for electrocatalysts, or catalysts that participate in electrochemical reactions. The goal is to enable scalable renewable energy storage by speeding up quantum mechanical simulations by as high as 1,000 times.

Renewable energy sources like wind and solar generate power intermittently and require storage to transfer power from times of peak generation to times of peak demand. Without technological advances, some researchers estimated the overall penetration of solar power, for example, is capped at 30%, with costs starting to rise substantially after 20% penetration.

Historically, batteries have been too expensive to scale; an alternative is using chemical reactions to convert energy into fuels like hydrogen and ethanol, enabling power to be efficiently stored for days, weeks, or months. But this process needs catalysts to drive the chemical reactions, the discovery of which can involve complex, time-consuming quantum simulations.

Thats where Open Catalyst 2020 (OC2020) comes in. OC2020 is the result of a year-long collaboration between Facebook and the research group of Professor Zachary Ulissi at Carnegie Mellons Department of Chemical Engineering. Focusing on molecules that are important in renewable energy applications, its a dataset compiled using Facebooks datacenter-optimizing Optimus tool on spare compute cycles over the course of four months. OC2020 comprises over 1.3 million relaxations of molecular adsorptions onto surfaces the collection of electrocatalyst structures to date.

Modern catalyst design taps simulation to determine if a material is suitable for further exploration. The simulation models the interaction of a molecule with a catalysts surface, a physical process called adsorption. The adsorbed molecules i.e., adsorbates are typically the key types involved in the reactions of interest, such as OH, O2, or H2O.

Assuming catalysts are created from up to three of the 40 known metals, there are nearly 10,000 combinations of elements. And because each combination must be tested by adjusting the ratios, the possibilities expand into the billions.

Current workflows allow scientists to try three or four possible catalyst combinations per year. Quantum mechanical simulation tools like those developed by Ulissis team can provide insight into roadblocks and focus efforts on the most promising catalyst candidates, but even modern computational laboratories struggle to exceed 40,000 simulations per year.

Thats because tools such as Density Functional Theory (DFT) use a process colloquially called relaxation, where they combine the locations of the atomic nuclei with quantum mechanics to predict the energy of the system and the forces acting on each atom. The locations of the nuclei are updated to minimize the energy, consequently changing the electronic distributions and energies. This iterative process continues until the energy of the system reaches a local minima; by examining the energy of the system with the lowest energy, researchers can get a sense of how much energy is needed to drive the reaction.

The process of relaxation is computationally complex and intensive, taking hours or even days per relaxation on high-end servers. It also scales poorly when the number of atoms is increased, with both longer computation times and an increased failure rate.

Facebook and Carnegie Mellon believe machine learning techniques might be the answer because of their ability to make quick, good approximations. By taking as input the state of a system including the atom positions, element types, bond information, and more, AI algorithms can predict system properties such as energy. Efficient DFT approximations, then, could make it possible to compute all potential catalyst surfaces and binding sites through brute force before theyre verified with traditional methods.

Theres reason to believe in the efficacy of AI approaches to catalyst discovery. Already, researchers have applied models to discover intermetallic surfaces and catalysts that transform waste carbon into commercially valuable products. Using AI to search for clean energy materials was explored at a 2017 workshop organized in collaboration with the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. And Ulissi was one of several researchers to receive a $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy in 2019 to use machine learning and data science to design more effective catalysts for chemical processing.

Within the purview of the Open Catalyst Project, Facebook and Carnegie Mellon say theyve begun to experiment with using a small number of DFT calculations to train more efficient AI models on the physics governing quantum mechanics. Effectively, theyve been teaching the models to approximate the energy and forces of molecules based on past data.

This research direction motivated the creation of OC2020, which Facebook and Carnegie Mellon describe as much larger and better-suited for the purpose than many existing datasets. Baseline models trained on OC2020 take between 12 and 72 hours to execute a relaxation with Optimus and Facebooks servers, with each relaxation consisting of hundreds of smaller time steps. The goal is to eventually compute relaxations in seconds.

Speed isnt the only factor. At each relaxation step, the forces at play on each atom in the system must be accurately predicted. Failure to do so means compounding errors until eventually the simulation bears little to no resemblance to reality. A mistake on the scale of hundredths of an angstrom, a fraction of the size of an atom, might result in pursuing catalysts that are less efficient than we expected from our model or worse, result in us overlooking a crucial breakthrough in electrocatalysis, Larry Zitnick, a Facebook research scientist on the Open Catalyst Project, explains in a blog post. Approximating DFT calculations poses an exceedingly difficult AI problem.

Facebook and Carnegie Mellon say they hope that the Open Catalyst Project and the release of the dataset and models will inspire researchers in the broader community and jump-start efforts hindered by a lack of compute. Moreover, Zitnick postulates that the techniques applied to quantum interactions modeling problems might apply to challenges in water quality remediation, medical treatment discovery, advanced manufacturing, and geochemistry.

We are determined to enable the community to build on our work and developments in an effort to advance the state of the art as quickly as possible, Zitnick continued. The Open Catalyst Project is committed to sharing our future AI models, baselines, and evaluation metrics, as well as any future datasets we create If successful, this research has the potential to significantly accelerate the global shift towards renewable energy, removing the high costs associated with current electrocatalysts, providing a scalable alternative to expensive storage technologies like batteries, and supplying clean and sustainable power the world over.

BTFS is Poised to Disrupt the Cloud Storage Industry? – ihodl.com

The cloud storage industry is growing at an explosive rate as demand for low-cost data storage solutions is rising.

As per data from Allied Market Research, the cloud storage industry was valued at $46.1 billion in 2019 and is projected to grow by 21.9% a year until 2027. This forecast is based on the expected surge in demand for cloud storage as more individuals and firms look to the cloud to solve their data storage needs and help manage unstructured data.

However, a recently released blockchain platform may be poised to throw a spanner into the works, by providing an arguably superior solution at a much lower cost.

What Is the BitTorrent File System (BTFS)?

The BitTorrent File System (BTFS) is a blockchain-based network that supports the storage and sharing of digital content through a content-addressable decentralized file system.

The BTFS protocol is built on a robust architecture enabled by the integration of various breakthrough technological innovations. Its core structure is a variant of the open-source Interplanetary File System (IPFS) protocol, which was hailed as a ground-breaking invention for decentralized file storage. BTFS network combines the TRON Network, TronGrid service, the BitTorrent network and the BitTorrent token (BTT) to create a file storage solution that anybody can help grow.

The BTFS network forms the base layer of a next-generation decentralized storage system that allows anybody to securely store their files in a decentralized, redundant manner, or contribute storage to help the network grow and earn rewards. The TRON network, on the other hand, provides a platform for creating blockchain-based applications that can leverage this storage platform, whereas the BitTorrent network makes the technology available to well over 100 million BitTorrent users spread out across the globe. It also adds to the systems functionality through its wide array of client-facing products.

Finally, TronGrid serves as the gateway that integrates these components into a single BTFS ecosystem whereas the BTT token powers the BTFS incentive mechanism, as users earn regular BTT rewards for contributing their excess storage to the network.

Why BTFS is Poised to Displace Cloud Storage

BTFS is in the process of disrupting the cloud storage sector and may be poised to transform how individuals and businesses handle data.

It tackles many of the main issues with popular cloud storage services of today, including the centralization of trust, lock-in effect and low fault tolerance. Since these platforms rely on centralized servers, they can be easily censored or rendered unavailable, while users were unable to easily transfer their files to more resilient systemsuntil now.

In addition to being expensive, traditional cloud storage services such as Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive can be easily breached, leading to data loss or privacy concerns, while the firms that operate them can be shut down at any time by the parent firm or governmentparticularly in countries prone to government censorship.

As TRON CEO Justin Sun explains in a recent tweetstorm, BTFS provides solutions for all these issues and goes a step further by making the platform more inclusive and rewarding for its users, making "#BTT the #BTC of decentralized storage." BTFS provides a basic service where the renters that consume network storage pay a small fee using BTT, while hosts that provide their storage space get rewarded in BTT. As it stands, rental costs are 23 BTT/GB/month, or roughly $10/month for 1TB of uncensorable, redundant storage. This is far cheaper than other redundant file storage options, and ~6x cheaper than that offered by IPFS.

Moreover, BTFS provides impressive data and privacy security through cryptography a core feature of the underlying blockchain technology. As such, data stored on BTFS is kept private at all times (even to data hosts) and remains censorship-resistant. Due to the decentralized nature of the system, organizations can be sure their files will be available 24/7, with practically zero chance of a blackout or shutdown.

How TRON is Using BTFS

The TRON Network is already using BTFS to optimize its operations, and TRON nodes can now use BTFS to sync the TRON blockchain.

BTFS now serves as the storage solution for all TRON network nodes thus making them more efficient due to faster syncing, while enabling new nodes to launch in significantly less time. Normally, syncing a new mainnet node could take days or potentially weeks depending on the availability of other TRON nodes, but this now takes just hours in most cases. The integration also enables content creators to host and share their content more easily on the TRON network through the BTFS ecosystem.

BTFS is actively looking to integrate other projects into their ecosystem. DLive, a popular blockchain-based content sharing platform, was the first of many to join the BTFS ecosystem. They announced back in December 2019 that they would begin their migration to the TRON blockchain to enable easy integration with BTFS. The merger completed successfully in July and DLive currently uses BTFS as its data storage solution.

Right now, BTFS has around 300,000 actively monthly users, include 20,000 storage hosts, and is currently accessible to well over 1,000 TRON full nodes and 27 Super Representative nodes all this, despite going to mainnet just months ago.

Reducing cloud storage costs: what you need to know – ITProPortal

The pandemic has fast tracked digital transformation for many businesses that now find themselves in a predominantly online environment. The proliferation of new technologies that enable agility and flexibility has left many businesses wondering how they can reap the benefits without racking up exorbitant costs. So, what are the key cost elements of cloud storage and how do companies mitigate unwanted costs?

Not all cloud solutions are created equal. While those focussed on the bottom line may look for the lowest priced option, there is a risk of both hidden costs and disappointing results. Due diligence may seem a clich, but in matters of data and IP it is absolutely vital that businesses pay close attention to who is managing it, where and how. Decision makers must question where their data will be stored and how many copies of that data exists across multiple locations, geographies and devices. Similarly, they need to consider the financial and reputational impact on the organization from data loss or breach.

Indeed, there are many factors to consider that affect not only cost, but also reputation and data integrity. Business must therefore have an understanding of their data and its purpose, when building a storage strategy:

Understanding the organizations application and data profile will ultimately inform which services will be built into the storage. Rarely is one single option chosen, as many businesses mix and match services to meet their data needs. However, businesses must understand their objectives when selecting storage options or risk unplanned expenses.

Additional costs arise if the storage isnt tweaked or moved to more appropriate tiers once its no longer needed or accessed. Understanding the implicit cost elements and working to reduce them will help ease budgetary requirements, especially as financial pressure is squeezing businesses around the world. So, what are the core cost factors involved in cloud storage and how do businesses best optimize them?

Capacity is normally charged per gigabyte, per month. Many factors can influence the level of capacity required, such as production data versus replication data, which has a significant impact on how storage is built. Is the storage needed for day-to-day tasks, or does the business need reliability, fault-tolerance or accessibility with snapshot or replication data? Storing obsolete data will incur costs no matter the location or capacity used by the data. All organizations should determine the importance of the data and how long this data will be critical to the business. These considerations will help inform the lifecycle of the service.

Additionally, data and systems will need to be compliant with regulations, government policies and internal protocols, no matter where the data is sitting.

Each transaction cost is largely determined by storage type. Although transactions can be minimal, costs can arise through misunderstanding the transaction profile. Movement, access, retrieval and deletion can all incur costs. By using the monitoring tools provided by suppliers to understand and identify excessive or redundant data, businesses can modify storage options to better manage costs.

Organizations will normally have multiple workloads spread across a number of environments. Organizations must ask themselves whether they want an inexpensive public but potentially unsecure connection, or an expensive but secure private connection for their cloud data. These choices will further impact potential ingress and egress fees. It is also wise to consider if the data is consistently exiting a private or public network, or are teams mostly uploading data. Software-defined networking that follows a pay-as-you-use commercial model can help manage costs, whilst still enabling flexible and agile deployment.

Its important to use the monitoring tools provided by vendors. All vendors offer robust methods and tools to monitor cloud usage either manually or automatically, and it is vital to have full visibility over the cloud storage options and usage to aid optimization. This becomes invaluable when data sits across multiple environments. Businesses must ensure monitoring tools are able to track transactions across the estate or else they risk data fragmentation, as the increased costs and complexity of access to this data could erode cloud storages advantages.

For many businesses, cloud storage has become the proverbial dumping ground for data. Indeed, stretchable solutions are a quick and easy upsell for vendors. But to move at scale and with efficiency, the way businesses view data needs to drastically change. Not only are the costs and size implications of bottomless storage huge, but the data within quickly becomes untenable. Owning data is good, but data still needs to be read and understood to be of any value. Identifying what kinds of data hold value to the business past and future and how you use it, is the first step to gaining data value.

Gaining, storing and using data is now such a multi-faceted task, that for many only the bare minimum is possible with the resources or strategies in place. In the new world of machine learning and artificial intelligence, what unique data can businesses hold and use now and, in the future, to provide insights and advancements? What other data is being generated, and is it just noise? Data may cost businesses to retain, but its important to keep the right balance between financial cost and business value.

The key to unlocking the potential of cloud, whilst keeping costs down, is properly understanding the data profile of the organization. By running a fully comprehensive workload analysis, businesses can understand what their core objectives and data needs are. This will in turn enable everyone to pick the correct type of service and reduce unexpected costs or issues.

Cohesity hooks up with AWS to pipe data management-as-a-service at users, starting with backup – Blocks and Files

Cohesity has hooked up with AWS, which is already a backer of the very well-funded data protection business, to sell its Data Platform facilities as a service, with backup being the first product.

Update; 8pm BST Oct 14. Commvault-Azure relationship added.

Data Management as a Service (DMaaS) is the new thing and builds on from Cohesitys Helios cloud-delivered management service for its 1,500 customers with Cohesity DataProtect offered as a service. It also comes days after Cohesity announced its SiteContinuity automated disaster recovery product.

Amazon made an investment in Cohesity in its April $250m E-round. AWSs Doug Yeum, its head of Worldwide Channels and Alliances, said of the deal: Working with Cohesity, we are charting a new course in how data is managed in an as a service model, leveraging disruptive, modern data management capabilities from Cohesity, and industry-leading cloud services from AWS.

Backup as a service (BaaS) will provide backup of on-premises workloads, via a Cohesity SaaS Connector agent, and also of in-cloud application. Backup data can be restored from AWS to AWS or to an on-premises site. The service will be managed by Cohesity and have consumption-based pricing, with a pre-paid alternative. Customers will get a global and searchable view of all their data backed up with Cohesity, both on-premises and in the cloud, through the Helios management facility.

The umbrella brand for Cohesitys DMaaS will be Helios and the DataProtect will be the first of a series of data management offerings for mid to large enterprises. The general idea is that Cohesity services will ingest data into AWS and then upstream Amazon services will process it. For example AWS Macie (security services), Glue (extract, transform and load into data warehouse), Redshift (data warehouse) and SageMaker (machine learning training).

Other potential Cohesity-AWS products include DRaaS, Files-aaS and Test Data Management-aaS. The latter would deliver zero-cost clones for developers in the AWS cloud. We understand DRaaS will follow quite soon.

Mohit Aron, Cohesity CEO and founder, offered his thoughts on this: Cohesity and AWS are also focused on helping customers derive value from data. Through AWS, customers can access a wealth of AWS services, including Amazon Macie, to help customers meet compliance needs, and Amazon Redshift for analytics.

Cohesitys Data Platform software converges a customers secondary data into a single storage vault covering on-premises and public cloud environments. Data is backed up and protected with immutable snapshots, and the public cloud can be used as a file tier and to store backup data.

The Backup as a Service (BaaS) offering is currently in early access preview with general availability planned by the end of the year. Cohesity will continue to sell its on-premises product.

Cohesity and AWS call this deal a strategic collaboration and its impact could be widespread. The largest public cloud has taken a massively-funded data protection and management supplier on board and invested in it. Cohesity customers could look to AWS for in-cloud storage and upstream data management services and AWS customers could now move to Cohesity to look after their on-premises data.

Although data protection and management suppliers like Actifio, Clumio, Dell, Delphix, Druva, HYCU, Rubrik, Veeam, Veritas and others have varying degrees of public cloud involvement, none have as close a relationship as this with with a top 3 public cloud supplier; except one.

Commvault is the exception. In June it announced that it and Microsoft were integrating Commvaults Metallic SaaS data protection with Azure Blob Storage and will develop other product integrations with native Azure services.

The two have a multi-year agreement and Metallic will be a featured app for SaaS data protection in the Azure Marketplace. Metallic Backup & Recovery for Office 365 is already available on the site.

The Google Cloud Platform does not have any equivalent relationship with any supplier like Cohesity.

B&F can envisage exploratory talks between the public cloud companies and the data management companies as suppliers try to become the GCP preferred partners or enlist with AWS alongside Cohesity or Are alongside Commvault..

A second follow-on from the Cohesity-AWS and Commvault-Azure deals could be that mid-to-large enterprise organisations could look to reduce their multiple data protection and management supplier lists and data silos by converging onto fewer suppliers. This would simplify their management burden and make accountability more manageable as well.

iPad productivity tips: Keyboard tricks, shortcuts, and more – Fast Company

Every year, the idea that the iPad is insufficient as a productivity device becomes staler.

Thats because Apple keeps making the iPad increasingly laptop-like, with features like trackpad support, a full-blown file browser, and multitasking. At the same time, the company has imbued its tablet with capabilities that you wont find on a laptop, such as Pencil support for sketching and the Shortcuts app for automation.

Now that Apple has released new iPads along with iPadOS 14, lets look at all the ways you can turn the tablet into a productivity powerhouse.

Add a keyboard and cursor: Got a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse handy? Pair them with your iPad to turn it into a miniature workstation. Got a 2018 and 2020 iPad Pro (or are planning to get the upcoming fourth-gen iPad Air)? Apples Magic Keyboard accessory lets you snap on a keyboard and trackpad for using your tablet like a laptop, while Logitechs Folio Touch provides a cheaper alternative. For other iPads, like the baseline iPad, 2017 iPad Pro, and third-generation iPad Air, Logitechs Combo Touch gives you a keyboard, trackpad, and kickstand for the tablet all in one package.

Know your shortcuts: Once youve connected a keyboard, use shortcuts to get around faster.

Get a grasp on trackpad gestures: If your keyboard has a trackpad, you can also use multitouch gestures to navigate around the iPad:

Tweak your cursor settings: If your mouse or trackpad doesnt feel quite right, head to Settings > General > Trackpad (or Trackpad & Mouse), where you can adjust tracking speed, reverse the direction of scrolling, enable trackpad tap-to-click gestures, and reverse your mouse buttons.

Modify your modifiers: Cant stand Apples layout of modifier keys such as Ctrl and Cmd? Change their behavior under Settings > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard > Modifier Keys. Making the globe key behave like Cmd for things like copy and paste will make Windows users feel right at home again.

Unlock more keyboard controls: With a setting called Full Keyboard Access, you can set up your iPad keyboard to perform all kinds of additional shortcuts. To enable this feature, head to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboards > Full Keyboard Access, then set the toggle to On.

Right away, youll be able to navigate the entire system with arrow keys and use new shortcuts such asTab-C for Control Center, Tab-N for notifications, and Tab-S for Siri. You can also view, modify, and create new keyboard shortcuts under the Commands section in the Full Keyboard Access menu.

Use desktop websites: If youre feeling constrained by a particular iOS app, try using the web version instead. Apples Safari browser on the iPad can load full desktop versions of sites such as Gmail, Tweetdeck, and Airtable. Those sites are often more capable than their mobile app counterparts, especially when paired with a trackpad and keyboard for right-click menus and shortcuts.

To make those sites more readily accessible, add them as bookmarks on your iPads home screen. In Safari, press the Share button, then select Add to Home Screen.

Scribble anywhere: With the new Scribble feature in iPadOS 14, you can use the Apple Pencil to write anywhere that accepts text entry, and the iPad will convert your handwriting to text. Its great for quickly entering text without putting your Pencil down. Once the iPad has converted some handwriting, here are some extra tricks to know:

If youd rather switch to the keyboard while scribbling, just hit the keyboard icon in the floating menu at the bottom of the screen. And to disable Scribble entirely, head to Settings > Apple Pencil.

Take a note faster: To jump straight into Apples Notes app from the lock screen, just tap in the middle of the screen with your Pencil. By default, this will create a new note every time, but you can change this under Settings > Notes > Access Notes from Lock Screen. You can also add a Notes shortcut in Control Center by heading to Settings > Control Center and hitting the green + icon next to Notes.

Make perfect shapes: Apples Notes app can automatically recognize shapes such as squares, circles, arrows, and lines. Just keep holding the Pencil down for a moment after making a shape, and your sloppy drawings will turn into perfect geometry.

Newer Apple Pencil tricks: With the second-generation Apple Pencil, you can double-tap on it to switch between drawing tools in supported apps. This will switch to an eraser by default, but you can change this under Settings > Apple Pencil.

Add a battery widget: To avoid getting stuck with a dead Pencil right when you need it, add a battery status indicator to your widgets list. At the bottom of the list, hit Edit, then hit +, then select Batteries from the list and hit Add Widget. Now you can see exactly how much charge is left at a glance.

Customize your dock: On the home screen, press, hold, and drag apps down to the bottom row to keep them in your dock. By default, some recently used apps will appear in the dock as well, but you can disable this under Settings > Home Screen & Dock.

View two apps in split-screen: To use the iPads Split View featurewhich works with a high percentage of popular apps but isnt universally supportedmake sure you have one app open, then press and hold another app in your dock and drag it up so the icon moves with your finger. (If the app isnt in your dock, you can hit Cmd-Space to search for it, then drag the icon in the search results.) Move it to either side of the screen, then let go once the other app slides over to make room. Adjust the split-screen by dragging the black bar between the two apps, or drag the bar to either edge of the screen to close the other app.

Open a mini app: Instead of moving your second app to the edges of the screen, try dropping it into the middle. This will open a miniature app window (called Slide Over) that appears on top of your main app. Dismiss this app by swiping the top bar to the right of the screen, or drag on the top bar to move it around. Dragging it to the top edge will open it in full screen, and dragging it to the sides will open it in Split View.

Stack up your apps: Slide Over really becomes useful when you stack up several apps on top of one another. Try dragging a second or third app on top of your first Slide Over app, then swipe on the bottom bar to switch between them. Or, flick up gently on the bottom bar to view all your Slide Over apps side by side. You can then dismiss any of them by swiping up.

Use the same app twice:Multitasking doesnt merely apply to separate apps. In some cases, you can also have two instances of the same app running side by side. Not every app supports this, but its great for viewing separate web pages in Safari or comparing documents in Word. Opening a second instance of one app works the same way as multitasking with two separate apps: Just drag the app onto your screen from the dock or from Cmd-Space search results.

Get familiar with Files: For full-blown file management on an iPad, use Apples Files app. Here youll find files saved by your appslocated under either On my iPad or iCloud Drive, depending on how the app stores files. Long-press or right-click any file for a menu of options, such as duplicating the file, moving it to another location, or adding it to a compressed Zip file.

Take note of the icons at the top-right corner of the Files app as well; thesell let you create new folders and switch between different views.

Connect cloud storage: The Files app isnt just for documents youve stored on the iPad or in iCloud. You can also link other cloud storage services such as Dropbox, OneDrive, and Google Drive. That way you can move files between locations or open them in other apps.

To link a service, make sure that youve installed and signed into corresponding app on your iPad. Then, in the Files app, hit the button in the left sidebar and select Edit Sidebar. From here you can toggle on the services you want to access through the Files app.

Add favorite folders: Instead of digging through endless directories to access your files, you can mark certain folders as favorites to make them show up in the left sidebar. This even works with cloud storage sources you link (per the tip above). Just long-press any folder and select Favorite for quicker access.

Scan your paper documents:While theres no shortage of paper scanner apps on the iPad, Apple also has a free one built into the Files app. In the left sidebar, tap the icon and select Scan Documents, then use the camera to scan each page of your document. Apple will automatically crop each image, and you can save the resulting PDF file to the directory of your choosing.

Use some basic shortcuts: Apples Shortcuts app is a powerful way to automate actions within apps on your iPad. On the most basic level, you can have Shortcuts for things like creating a new email, launching Google Assistant, texting a favorite contact, or shortening a link. You can then launch these actions through the Shortcuts app, create icons or widgets to launch them from your home screen, or in some cases access them via the Share menu within apps.

The easiest way to get started is to visit the Gallery section of the Shortcuts app, where youll find suggested Shortcuts from Apple. Take a look at the Shortcuts from your apps section in particular, which will list some quick actions you can take within the apps you use most.

Search for more advanced shortcuts:Apples Gallery only begins to cover whats possible with Shortcuts. For more advanced automation, check out some online communities such asRoutineHub, ShortcutsGallery, and Shortcut Hub, which host all kinds of Shortcuts you can add to your own iPad. One particularly impressive example: A Shortcut that automatically adds the weather, calendar events, and reminders to your lock screen.

Run shortcuts with your keyboard: After setting up some useful Shortcuts, you can map them to your keyboard for even quicker access. Just head back to the Full Keyboard Access menu (under Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard), then select Commands and scroll to the bottom of the list, where youll find all your shortcuts. Tap on any Shortcut, then enter the key combination youd like to associate with it. You might, for instance, use Ctrl-G to launch Google Assistant, or use keyboard shortcuts to open certain apps such as Safari or Gmail.

The only quirk to this trick is that you must engage keyboard most first by pressing any key, then type the shortcut you want to use. But once youve started mapping custom actions to the keyboard, you might wonder how you went so long without it.
