What is OneDrive? Everything you need to know about Microsoft’s cloud storage service – Business Insider – Business Insider

OneDrive is Microsoft's cloud-based online storage solution.

Most OneDrive users get access as a part of a Microsoft 365 subscription, which includes Microsoft Office and 1TB of OneDrive storage space. But you can also get a free OneDrive account with 5GB of space.

OneDrive lets you keep files that you create and store on your computer in sync with the cloud. You can connect any number of other devices, such as laptops, phones, and tablets, with OneDrive, letting you keep those files in sync and making them available from anywhere.

In addition, OneDrive lets you back up specific locations from your computer to the cloud. If you turn this feature on, you can automatically keep files stored on your Desktop, in the Documents folder, and photos in your Pictures folder on your OneDrive, effectively giving you a reliable automatic backup of your most critical files.

In Windows 10, OneDrive has been deeply integrated into the operating system, making it easy to configure and use. Even if you are using a different operating system, though such as a Mac or Windows 8 using OneDrive is still quite similar.

Here are the main things you need to know.

If you are using OneDrive for the first time, you'll first need to download it if it isn't already installed and sign in. After you sign in to your OneDrive account, you'll be prompted to configure the service based on your needs.

Samsung Cloud storage shutdown: Everything you need to know – Tom’s Guide

Samsung Cloud is a mobile cloud storage service available on most Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablets. Its used to automatically back up, sync, and restore your photos, data, and settings. However, Samsung has announced that most of the features of Samsung Cloud are to be retired, so youll need to replace it with an alternative cloud storage solution.

If you need a replacement mobile cloud storage for your Samsung Galaxy, weve put together a list of the best cloud storage providers available. Below are the most important things to know about the changes to Samsung Cloud storage.

Today's best IDrive deals

Most of Samsung Clouds features are being removed. Gallery Sync and Drive storage for My Files will be retired. This means your images and files will no longer sync with the cloud and theyll be deleted. Premium storage subscriptions will be canceled.

A few features of Samsung Cloud will remain, such as the syncing of Notes, Calendars, and Contacts.

The changes to the service are being rolled out in two batches. For customers in Group 1, the services will stop working on April 1, 2021, and data will be deleted on June 30, 2021. For customers in Group 2, the services will stop working on June 1, 2021, and data will be deleted on August 31, 2021.

You can see a list of countries in each group on the Samsung Cloud website. The US, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and Vietnam are in the first group.

Samsung suggests using Microsoft OneDrive as a replacement for the features being stripped from Samsung Cloud. A migration feature started rolling out to Group 1 customers on October 5, 2020, and it will become available to Group 2 customers on December 1, 2020. It will take up to 30 days to roll out this feature to all customers.

If you select this option, your Samsung Cloud data will be transferred to Microsoft OneDrive and your data deleted from Samsung Cloud immediately.

An alternative option is to download your data to your personal storage. From within Samsung Cloud, choose Download my data. In Gallery, choose Download content from cloud from within the Settings menu.

If you choose this option, your Samsung Cloud data will be deleted from the Samsung Cloud 90 days after you download your data. Regardless of whether youve downloaded or migrated your data, it will be removed from the Samsung Cloud on June 30, 2021 (Group 1), or August 31, 2021 (Group 2).

Samsung Cloud storage is a cloud storage solution for Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets, but most of the softwares features are being retired in 2021. In particular, Samsung Cloud will no longer sync your photos in Gallery or files in Drive. You can migrate your stored content to Microsoft OneDrive by using the built-in transfer tool, or you can download the content to your device to switch to the cloud storage of your choosing.

InfluxData adds yet another 2.0 platform and opens a new front to cloud storage – ZDNet

InfluxData, a time-series database platform provider that already has distinct cloud and open source/on-premises versions, is adding to the stew. It is announcing upgrades to the 2.0 generation of the open source platform that includes some features borrowing from its cloud offering, a smattering of incremental updates, and the announcement of a new open source project that will extend InfluxData's reach to cloud object storage.

The open source platform has now added support for Flux, the GUI-based, scripting-oriented query language initially introduced with the InfluxDB Cloud 2.0 platform last spring. It's very much a departure from the original InfluxQL that was a more declarative SQL-like language. It's also a departure from rivals like Timescale and Amazon Timestream that have heavily embraced SQL

InfluxData's rationale is that a scripting-oriented language, even if it is simplified with a drag and drop front end, is a lot more powerful when building analytic queries on time series data. Nonetheless, InfluxData is not pulling the plug on InfluxQL. Hold that thought.

Also part of this release, InfluxData is releasing jumpstart templates, which consist of single file-monitoring configurations for common use cases such as network and IoT sensor monitoring. This comes from a strategy of meeting users where they live may as well make core use cases easier.

And then there is announcement of yet another new front in the war. InfluxData is unveiling InfluxDB IOx. It would extend the platform's reach to data stored in Parquet format in cloud object storage. As envisioned, InfluxDB IOx would embrace a modern cloud-native architecture by separating storage from compute. Storage would act as the durability layer, while query, ingest, and indexing servers run in stateless Kubernetes clusters, with a management layer up top to maintain state and keep the whole operation sane. It would build atop existing open source building blocks including Apache Arrow Flight for marshalling data for high-speed transport.

Down the road, we would also assume that the project would develop APIs that could both subscribe to PubSub feeds from Kafka, or as part of change data streaming, publish update feeds from the database. There will be different APIs so you can query InfluxDB IOx, or whatever InfluxData brands as the commercially supported version of this open source project, with the language of your choice. Also, down the road, we wouldn't be surprised if the project got renamed, as a Google search of IOx today brings up Cisco's IoT application environment.

Our concern is that, for a modest sized company, InfluxData is juggling multiple data platforms. For now, there is the classic InfluxData platform, that now has a 2.0 version; two generations of cloud platforms; and now, a new project that adds yet another engine to extend InfluxData's reach to cloud object storage with a cloud-native architecture. That's a lot of targets for a single technology vendor that is not the size of AWS or Microsoft to support. InfluxData claims it has the resources to push this forward, having not even dipped into the $60M Series-D funding they secured back in February 2019. But it's not just resources, but the ability to focus, which gets challenging when there are lots of platforms or engines to juggle.

Keep in mind that the InfluxDB platform is arguably the most popular open source time series database out there, with the company estimating over 400,000 daily active instances out there in the wild. No wonder there arethird partiesgetting into the act, hosting their own InfluxDB clouds.

We'll start with our own confusion there are two InfluxData 2.0 platforms. When InfluxData 2.0 was introduced to us a year ago, it was positioned as the cloud-native successor to InfluxDB 1.0, and that the Influx QL query language was being deprecated. We assumed that InfluxDB Cloud 2.0 would become the future design point for InfluxData's platforms. InfluxData characterizes the two 2.0-version platforms (cloud and open source) as "complementary," that are optimized for different use cases. The open source platform is single node, good for local and edge deployments, while the cloud is designed for scaling.

At the time, we observed that asking customers of a popular platform to make a jump to a new version with (at the time) limited backward compatibility was a riverboat gamble. We were also told at the time that InfluxQL was being deprecated. Since then, the existing customer base responded with, in effect, "Not so fast." InfluxData will keep InfluxQL alive with APIs.

Clearly, the extension of common APIs and support of Flux on the current platform are positive steps toward providing a bridging strategy. APIs are popular ways of making cloud data platforms extensible and to the developer/user, it will make InfluxData's platforms extensible to different audiences. But in the cases of Azure Cosmos DB; Google Cloud Firestore and Spanner; and with announcement of the new Stargate open source project, DataStax and Cassandra, they are with different APIs that expose the same underlying storage engine. In contrast, InfluxData is pulling this off with multiple storage engines in a manner reminiscent of MariaDB it's clearly the more challenging road.

We would have preferred that InfluxData adopt a more active platform convergence strategy that would have centered on a more singular target, InfluxDB Cloud 2.0, with the assumption that the meeting of the paths would not happen overnight. And we would have liked the cloud platform to have been imagined for an extensible future for supporting different time series data types beyond logs and metrics, and with federated query to cloud storage in mind. We would have preferred that to devising new query and storage engines after the fact.

This week in storage with Kioxia and Elastic Blocks and Files – Blocks and Files

In this weeks storage news roundup, there are signs of a coming together of Kioxia and Western Digital over zoned SSDs. Also ,Elastic is adding searchable snapshots stored in public cloud object stores.

Kioxia has added support for QLC flash and weighted fair queueing to its software-enabled flash (SWET) technology.

SWET enables a big data centre operator to closely manage the details of data placement on SSDs to optimise capacity, efficiency, performance and endurance across a large fleet. APIs provide for the creation of virtual devices on SSDs similar to Western Digitals Zoned SSD concept. Kioxia is active in the NVMe technical working group for ZNS (Zoned Namespace) SSDs.

Weighted fair queueing (WFQ) is a packer-based network scheduling algorithm that provides for different bandwidth priorities to be given to different types of traffic, with different flow types given a different weight in scheduling decisions. Different weights could be given, for example, to traffic flows to the different virtual devices set up on SSDs by SWET. This would enable varying levels of service to be met.

Kioxia claims this allows the user to define and control latency live as applications are running.

Elastic, which supplies Elasticsearch and the Elastic Stack, has announced the beta of searchable snapshots. The snapshots can be searched by analytical routines to get insights to drive operational efficiencies.

Elastic will initially support a new lower-cost cold tier of storage, which offloads redundant copies of data to the object stores to drive savings. The redundant copies are searchable snapshots of data in primary storage tiers that are placed in low-cost object stores such as Amazon S3, Azure Storage, and Google Cloud Storage. This frees up primary storage.

Elastic claims formalised data tier definitions with built-in data transition rules and integrated index lifecycle management will make it easier for customers to manage the full lifecycle of their data automatically.

In a future release, Elastic customers will be able to use a frozen tier of storage, such as AWS Glacier, where all data can be kept in lower-cost object stores. Read more in an Elastic blog .

The virtual Flash Memory Summit has concluded and attendees have voted for 18 examples of outstanding technology in various categories.

One category was the Most Innovative Flash Memory Technology and the awards were given to:

One award winner was Pavilion Data. This was for its HyperParallel Flash Platform in massive deployments across 10s of petabytes. It achieved 120GB/sec, 20 million IOPS, and latency of only 25s across the fabric to meet the facial recognition needs of a Federal Government Agency.

Other winners included Pliops (compute on storage drive), Fungible (Data Processing Unit FS1600), WekaIO (Weka Accelerated DataOps for AI) and IBM with its ESS3000 all-flash array..

Caringo has announced Swarm 12 object storage, which enables more flexible distributed protection and immediate global content use across geographically dispersed sites. The software integrates with single sign-on (SSO) platforms and has a simplified web-based UI. There is support for S3 Glacier and Glacier Deep Archive and capacity and performance optimisations for dense storage nodes and flash.

CRU Data Security Group (CDSG), a provider of data security, data transport and disaster-proof data storage devices, has taken over fellow US company Digistor, a manufacturer of secure solid-state drives and removable storage products. The transaction is described as a merger.

The CXL Consortium has released the 2.0 version of the Compute Express Link specification. CXL interface tech is for connecting data centre host processors to accelerators (graphics chips and FPGAs), memory buffers, and smart network interface controllers (NICs). CXL 2.0 is backwards compatible with CXL 1.1 and 1.0 and adds memory pooling, connecting many devices across one CXL Link, standardised persistent memory management and a CXL fabric manager.

Infinidat is marketing an edge security appliance that combines the company sInfiniBox storage array; VMware Validated Designs (VVD) for SDDC implementation; and Splunk SIEM for realtime security monitoring, threat detection, forensics, and incident management.

Inspur Information and Samsung Electronics announced at OCP Tech Week a jointly-developed1U server-based open all-flash storage resource pooling solution. The is designed for local large-capacity/high-performance storage and the product architecture is to be made open source. This server uses the new Ruler SSD E1.S format, holds up to 256TB in 1U (1PB in 40U), and supports remote sharing via NVMe-oF.

Kioxia wants people to stop using the ruler SSD moniker. It tells us: Its not a big deal, but we wanted to provide some background on the ruler naming. Kioxia is in the SFF groups that are defining EDSFF E3x and E1.x, and ruler is not officially mentioned in either specification. The term ruler was used before E1.L was actually named and stuck around as a nickname. E3.x is more like a traditional 2.5 form factor, so that is certainly not like a ruler. Also, Kioxia is co-leading the SNIA SSD SIG that markets EDSFF and we are not using ruler when discussing E1.S.

Palo Alto Networks has introduced Enterprise Data Loss Prevention (DLP), a cloud-delivered service to prevent data breaches by automatically identifying confidential intellectual property and personally identifiable information (PII).

Panasas has appointed Brian Peterson as Chief Operating Officer. he has held roles as SVP of sales and marketing, vice president of business development, and vice president of international operations. In the latter role, he ran EMEA for Emulex.

Phison has built the PS5018-E18, a second generation PCIe Gen 4 NVMe controller. It has 4 PCIe lanes and uses a distributed architecture with many small cores to perform the workload in parallel. It delivers a record 7GB/sec on both read and write access.

Pliops is developing its Storage Processor and showed it at the Flash Memory Summit. It is a PCIe card which accelerates storage processing and uses Intel QLC (4bits/cell) 3D NAND flash. The card offers thin provisioning, reduced write amplification, and a 5-year warranty. It provides RAID 5-like protection at twice RAID 0 speed, and better-than-TLC SSD performance. The product is sampling with GA in early 2021.

Redis Labs has announced the new fully integrated tiers of Redis Enterprise on Microsoft Azure Cache for Redis are available now in public preview. These new tiers bring search, time series and Bloom probabalistic data structures to Azure Cache. Azure customerscanconsume Redis Enterprise v6.0 like any other Azure Cache tier and use their existing commitmentto Azure.

At FMS 2020 the RSC Group announced that its RSC Data Storage-on-Demand solutions support Intels DAOS (Distributed Asynchronous Object Storage)open-source cluster file system. It enables multi-layered storage based on Lustre file system in Disaggregated Composable Infrastructure and flexible management of NVMe disk pools. The RSC BasIS platform enables a composable approach for DAOS management combining servers with PMEM and servers with NVMe devices in pools connected with fast network fabric.

RSC presented an improved RSC Tornado AFS intelligent data storage-on-demand system with up to 1PB capacity per node enabled by 32x Intel SSD drives with NVMe in EDSFF.L format, The node also includes two Xeon Scalable 2nd Generation processors, Optane SSD drives and Optane DC Persistent Memory modules. RSC Tornado AFS nodes use hot water liquid cooling with record low PUE level of 1.04.

SoftIron is joining the iRODS Consortium after certifying that its HyperDrive storage appliances are fully compatible with the iRODS architecture. iRODS develops free open source software for data discovery, workflow automation, secure collaboration, and data virtualization that is used globally by research, commercial and governmental organisations.

ThinkParQ, the company behind the parallel file system BeeGFS, has appointed Dr. Peter Braam as CTO. He has held exec roles at public companies and has founded or co-founded six start-ups,and has been working with the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge on Radio Telescopes, Machine Learning and Data Intensive Computing. Braam will lead the R&D team, guide BeeGFSs architectural and product development, and its strategic roadmap.

Tesla is No. 1 most attractive company for engineering students, and thats a massive advantage – Electrek

Tesla has now taken the No. 1 spot in the rankings of the most attractive companies for engineering students to work for in the US.

Thats a massive advantage that cant be overstated.

In the fast-paced tech world, innovation is the most important way for companies to stay competitive.

The best way to achieve a high pace of innovation is through establishing a culture that nurtures it within the organization and attracts top engineering talent.

On the latter, Tesla appears to have an important lead over the competition.

Universum conducts extensive surveys of students around the world and recently released its 2020 report:

Universum Global has just released its 12th annual Worlds Most Attractive Employers report. This year Universum surveyedover 235,000 business and engineering/IT studentsin the worlds 12 largest economies (Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Russia, South Korea, the UK, and the US). We asked this group of future talent to provide insights on the company characteristics they find most attractive in a potential employer, as well as who they perceive to be their ideal employer.

In the US, Tesla has now topped the list of the most attractive companies for engineering students.

Tesla is also the only automaker in the top 10:

Tesla also makes the top 10 for business and computer science students.

The automaker has always been in the top 10 over the past few years, but this year has been the first time that Tesla was able to edge NASA and SpaceX for the top position.

As I previously said, thats a massive advantage that cant be overstated.

To be fair, attractive established talent in the industry is also very important, but being the top company that new engineers want to work at is a big deal.

Considering that Tesla and SpaceX are numbers 1 and 2, its fair to say that Elon Musk has a big effect on this.

Tesla is also known for having a somewhat high turnover rate, because it pushes its employees hard.

As I previously reported, Ben Schaffer, president ofUnplugged Performance, has an interesting perspective on Elons impact and the flow of talent at Tesla.

There are a lot of talented engineers in the world and most of them want to work at Tesla and for Elon, who Shaffer describes as the best engineer in the world.

Schaffer told me:

Its a magnetic effect and the magnet is Elon, the worlds most brilliant engineer. That, and Teslas mission, which is solving the worlds biggest problem.

He believes in Teslas ability to keep attracting top talent, and even if they dont stay for too long, Tesla and even Elon himself are absorbing a lot of their knowledge and using it long after they are gone.

Its also not to say that the people are disposable, but its an interesting perspective to look at it as a cycle.

That cycle is a lot easier to maintain if you have a strong flow of new engineering students that are excited to come work for you.

ENGINEERING AT ITS BEST... AND WORST: DON'T MISS THE RETURN OF SCIENCE CHANNEL'S HIT SERIES "DEADLY ENGINEERING" AND "IMPOSSIBLE ENGINEERING" PREMIERING NOVEMBER 11

Behind each seemingly impossible marvel of modern engineering is a trail of mistakes, missteps, lessons learned, and historical trailblazers who are responsible for pioneering new building techniques and taking risks that push the boundaries of innovation. At its best, extraordinary engineering can showcase human ingenuity in ways that defy what we once thought impossible. At its worst, even the most minute miscalculation can cost millions in both dollars and lives.

With the return of two Science Channel series, DEADLY ENGINEERING and IMPOSSIBLE ENGINEERING, viewers travel worldwide to discover remarkable engineering feats that prove impossible, and witness some of engineering's greatest successes and failures through expert analysis, archived footage, and witness interviews.

An all-new season of DEADLY ENGINEERING premieres Wednesday, November 11 at 9 pm ET/PT on Science Channel, followed by an all-new season of IMPOSSIBLE ENGINEERING at 10 pm ET/PT. In addition to watching DEADLY ENGINEERING and IMPOSSIBLE ENGINEERING on Science Channel, viewers can join the conversation on social media by following SCIENCE CHANNEL on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and using the hashtags #DeadlyEngineering and #ImpossibleEngineering.

On this season of DEADLY ENGINEERING, experts deep dive into the events behind infamous engineering catastrophes such as the VSS Enterprise crash, Fukushima, Exxon Valdez, Grenfell Tower, and Three Mile Island, as well as notable disasters including the Flint, Michigan Water Crisis, the Piper Alpha Oil Rig explosion and the San Jose mine collapse in Chile. Using state of the art graphics and recounting harrowing witness accounts, viewers will get a never before seen look at the fatal missteps behind these calamities and learn new theories as to why these disasters came to be.

In the upcoming season of IMPOSSIBLE ENGINEERING, experts celebrate the record-breaking buildings, ships and spacecrafts that push the limits of what's possible and reveal how these mega-structures are built and operated. In the season premiere, engineers and test pilots attempt the first ever flight on the impossibly huge Stratolaunch, a one-of-a-kind aircraft carrier designed to lift rockets and high-speed super sonic planes into the stratosphere. In China, engineers must divert water from the wet south to the bone-dry north - and do so over the distance that is equal to traveling from New York to Los Angeles. The project, known as the South-To-North Water Diversion project, will provide water to millions of people and break boundaries as engineers attempt to accomplish the project relying on gravity alone. Also this season, in the southern Scottish countryside, a bizarre mega-machine capable of lifting large boats between two canals has appeared on the ancient landscape. Experts investigate the ground-breaking engineering behind this unique machine and how it made and how it made the route from the Scottish capital of Edinburgh to their largest city, Glasgow, navigable by boat.

DEADLY ENGINEERING is produced for Science Channel by SWR Media and Intermission Film in association with Dash Pictures and DCD Rights. For SWR Media, Daniel Sharp is Executive Producer. For Science Channel, Lindsey Foster Blumberg is Supervising Producer and Jennifer Gross is Producer. IMPOSSIBLE ENGINEERING is produced by Twofour Broadcast for Science Channel. For Twofour, executive producer is Neil Edwards and series producer is Jonney Steven. For Science Channel, Neil Laird is executive producer and Lindsey Foster Blumberg is supervising producer.
