The World’s Only Processor Family with Full Memory Encryption* – PCWorld

Whether you are a large corporation or small business, protecting your customers and business data is important. There are numerous reports of computers being lost or stolen containing very sensitive information such as banking records, individuals health information, and even government FBI investigations.

With modern notebooks and desktop PCs that are never fully turned off, the threat of this data being stolen from a physical attack (sometimes referred to as a Cold Boot Attack) is high. Many security mechanisms, even drive encryption, can be defeated through this type of attack.

Through a modern, multi-layered approach to security, AMD processors help protect sensitive data from todays sophisticated attacks, help avoid downtime, and can reduce resource drain. In particular, AMD Memory Guard brings a new security feature to help address an old industry problem.

When users login to their computer many of the system secrets are stored within the DRAM, un-encrypted. With physical access to a PC an attacker may be able to chill the memory, reset the system bypassing memory clearing functions, and read the contents. As a result, the keys used for drive encryption and user passwords stored in memory can be extracted. Unfortunately, this has been an industry problem going back more than 10 years. While in recent years DDR4 memory scrambling techniques have helped somewhat they have been publicly proven to not provide an effective protection against a physical memory attack.

Up until AMD developed Memory Guard the only way to help protect against this type of attack was to completely turn the PC off after each use. In fact, many storage encryption vendors still recommend this approach today. While effective, the problem is end users expect a more responsive computing experience with the ability to leave and resume their work without ever turning their computer off.

The industry responded by pushing towards the widescale use of modern standby where a PC stays in standby mode ready to resume functioning where the user left off within seconds. This greatly improves the user experience and productivity, but it also brought back into focus the risk from physical attacks. Finding a solution to this dilemma between productivity and data security is the type of technology challenge AMD is dedicated to solving.

Businesses must look at all aspects of endpoint security as essential tools in their security defenses while also being mindful of how the modern PC is being used.

With AMD PRO security technology, users get the benefit of AMD Memory Guard, which enables system memory encryption to help reduce the threat of physical memory attacks even if a system is left in standby mode. When used in combination with other technologies, like drive encryption, TPM, and system authentication, businesses can continue to help protect data while also allowing users to be more productive by not having to shut down their PC after every use.

What is Signal? The basics of the most secure messaging app. – Mashable

Existing Signal users might be getting more notifications than usual. Jack is on Signal, Cathy is on Signal, Miriam is on Signal, all pings showing phone contacts who are joining the secure messaging app.

Those pings reflect the fact that theres been an influx of new users. Known for its end-to-end encryption and independent structure as a non-profit organization run by a foundation not a big tech company Signal has previously been the communication method of choice for activists, people in the hacker community, and others concerned about privacy.

Recently, its gone mainstream.

Recently, Facebook-owned WhatsApp which is end-to-end encrypted using Signals protocols began issuing a privacy update notification to users making clear that it is sharing user data with Facebook (which it has actually been doing for years). Thats led people to look elsewhere for a secure communications app, helped along by Elon Musks Jan. 7 tweet which simply stated: Use Signal.

Over the past three years, Signal has also been investing in more infrastructure and features to support its users. That's a good thing: Signal first saw an increase in users in the spring as people participating in anti-racist protests around the killing of George Floyd realized how closely law enforcement was surveilling them and asking companies to hand over user data. Its only become more popular since then. As of this writing, Signal is at the top of the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, and its two-factor authentication onboarding system even got briefly delayed Thursday because so many people were trying to sign up.

So, thinking about joining Signal? Bottom line: If you care about privacy, its a good idea. Heres what you need to know.

Signal is a free, privacy-focused messaging and voice talk app you can use on Apple and Android smartphones and via desktop. All you need is a phone number to join. You can text or make voice or video calls with friends, either one-on-one or in groups, and use emoji reactions or stickers just like in other apps. But theres one big difference: Signal is actually really private.

Communications on Signal are end-to-end encrypted, which means only the people in messages can see the content of those messages not even the company itself. Even sticker packs get their own special encryption.

Signal created the encryption protocol (basically, the technical way you implement this) that other companies including WhatsApp and Skype use. Plainly put, it is the gold standard of privacy.

Yes and that privacy goes beyond the fact that the content of your messages is encrypted. You can set messages to disappear after certain customizable time frames. Plus, Signal collects virtually no data on its users. The only information you give the app is your phone number, and the company is even working on a way to decouple that from using Signal by making encrypted contact servers. If the police come knocking to Signal for data on its users, it says, truthfully, that it has no data to hand over.

Part of the reason it collects no data is because Signal is a non-profit organization, not a for-profit company. It has no advertising, so no incentive to track users. Instead, its funded by grants and private investors one of whom had a huge personal interest in making a privacy-oriented platform. Though a small group of privacy activists created Signal in 2013, it has grown in recent years. In 2018, WhatsApp founder Brian Acton donated $50 million to create the Signal Foundation, which now runs Signal. Acton got on board with the mission to make a truly private messaging service after Facebook acquired WhatsApp and Acton reportedly left the company amid clashes with Facebook over how it was eroding WhatsApps privacy.

Both Signal and WhatsApp are end-to-end encrypted using the same technology. That means the content of the messages you send and calls you have are both private. However, Facebook collects lots of other information in the form of usage statistics, metadata, and more. And theres no longer a way to opt out.

Signal does not have as many fancy customization features as WhatsApp, like backgrounds. But when it comes to true privacy, there is no comparison.

You can see a full list of alternatives to Facebook-owned messaging services here.

Another app rising in popularity is Telegram. Telegram says its also all about privacy, but it actually has plenty of downsides. Messages on Telegram are not truly end-to-end encrypted by default. Plus, the fact that private groups are unlimited in size, can be joined via a link, and are explicitly not moderated has made it a hotbed for toxic and illegal content, like terrorism and revenge porn (also known as non-consensual pornography). Signal does not moderate content either, but it limits groups to 1,000, and is more about communicating with people who are actual contacts than joining groups of strangers like on WhatsApp and Telegram.

You can find Signal in Apples App Store or in the Google Play store. Its currently very easy to find since its sitting right at the top of the Free Apps chart.

WhatsApp chats are encrypted so how will Facebook use chat data for ads? This is how – India Today

WhatsApp has posted a clarification on its updated policy, reassuring users that their messages are secure and cannot be read by the platform. The statement comes days after the instant messaging platform updated its terms of service following which users started migrating to other platforms such as Signal and Telegram. WhatsApp has added a new section on its FAQ page where it mentions that that the policy update does not affect the privacy of your messages with friends or family in any way.

Neither WhatsApp nor Facebook can read your messages or hear your calls with your friends, family, and co-workers on WhatsApp. Whatever you share, it stays between you. Thats because your personal messages are protected by end-to-end encryption. We will never weaken this security and we clearly label each chat so you know our commitment, the statement reads.

While this means that your chats are end-to-end encrypted, the data WhatsApp talked about in its policy will still be collected. The updated policy said that to receive services from the Facebook Companies, WhatsApp shares the information it has about you as described in the Information We Collect section of the Privacy Policy.

This information may include the phone number you verified when you signed up for WhatsApp, some of your device information (your device identifiers associated with the same device or account, operating system version, app version, platform information, your mobile country code and network code, and flags to enable tracking of the update acceptance and control choices), and some of your usage information (when you last used WhatsApp and the date you first registered your account, and the types and frequency of your features usage) on WhatsApp.

WhatsApp also shares information with other Facebook Companies when this is necessary for the purpose of promoting safety, security, and integrity across the Facebook Companies. This includes the sharing of information that enables Facebook and the other Facebook Companies to determine whether a certain WhatsApp user is also using other Facebook Company Products, and to assess whether the other Facebook Companies need to take action, either against such user or to protect them, the policy had said.

Interestingly, throughout the updated policies, WhatsApp refers to products owned by Facebook as Facebook companies. This includes both Facebook, Instagram and other companies owned by the tech giant.

On its page, WhatsApp explains that Facebook Company Products are, together, the Facebook Products and other products provided by the Facebook Companies that are subject to a separate, stand-alone terms of service and privacy policy, including the WhatsApp, Oculus Products (when using an Oculus account), and CrowdTangle websites, products, or apps.

As mentioned before, while WhatsApp cannot read your chats or access your media files, it will still trace your activity on the platform and collect other data. All of this can help Facebook identify the businesses you want to interact with on either of the social media platforms. This will enable businesses present on Facebook to communicate with users via WhatsApp.

As we previously announced, we're exploring ways for people and businesses to communicate using WhatsApp, and this could include working with the other Facebook Companies to help people find businesses they're interested in and communicate with via WhatsApp. In this way, Facebook could enable users to communicate via WhatsApp with businesses they find on Facebook, WhatsApp clearly states in its updated policy.

Apart from this, WhatsApp also believes that understanding how people use the platform when compared to other apps, will enable it to explore potential features or product improvements.

Lastly, you may start seeing ads on Facebook with an option to message them directly on WhatsApp. Those who have WhatsApp installed on their smartphones, will be able to message that business. Facebook will also look at the way users interact with these ads to personalize the ads you see on Facebook.

What Is Signal, and Why Is Everyone Using It? – How-To Geek

Signal

Signal is a secure encrypted messaging app. Think of it as a more private alternative to WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Skype, iMessage, and SMS. Heres why you should seriously consider switching to Signal.

Signal is available for Android, iPhone, and iPad. Theres also a Signal desktop client for Windows, Mac, and Linux. To join, all you need is a phone number. Its free.

The user experience of Signal is just like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and other popular chat apps. Its a messaging app with features like one-to-one messages, groups, stickers, photos, file transfers, voice calls, and even video calls. You can have group chats with up to 1000 people and group calls with up to eight people.

Signal isnt owned by a big tech company. Instead, Signal is developed by a non-profit foundation and is funded by donations. Unlike Facebook, Signals owners arent even trying to make money. Signal doesnt try to gather a bunch of data on you or show you advertisements.

While Signal has a very familiar interface, its very different under the hood. Your conversations in Signal are end-to-end encrypted, which means that not even the owners of Signal can monitor them. Only the people in the conversation can see them.

Signal is also completely open-source. The source code for the projects client apps and server software is available on GitHub.

All communications on Signalincluding one-to-one messages, group messages, file transfers, photos, voice calls, and video callsare end-to-end encrypted. Only the people involved in the communication can see them. The encryption happens between the individual devices using Signal. The company that operates Signal could not see these messages even if it wanted to. Signal actually created its own encryption protocol for this.

This is very different from traditional messaging apps. For example, Facebook has access to everything you say in Facebook Messenger. Facebook says it wont use the content of your messages for advertising, but are you confident that will never change in the future?

Sure, some other messengers offer encrypted messaging as an optional feature. But everything on Signal is encrypted, always and by default. Signal also offers other privacy features, including self-destructing (disappearing) messages that will automatically be removed after a period of time.

Facebook Messenger collects a lot of data about you, too. Most companies collect a lot of data. Signal tries not to.

Even if Signal is subject to a subpoena on you and forced to disclose what it knows about you, the company knows almost nothing about you and your Signal activity. Signal could reveal only your accounts phone number, last connection date, and account creation time.

In contrast, Facebook could reveal your full name, everything youve said on Facebook Messenger, a list of geographical locations youve accessed your account fromand so on.

Everything in your Signal appmessages, pictures, files, and so onis stored locally on your phone. You can manually transfer data between devices, but thats it.

Signals end-to-end encryption is its big feature. Thats why so many people are using Signalbecause theyre concerned about privacy. At the start of 2021, its been endorsed by everyone from Elon Musk to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and has shot to the top of Apple and Googles app store charts.

But Signal didnt come from nowhereit was founded in 2013. Its a widely respected piece of software thats long been used by privacy advocates and other activists. Edward Snowden endorsed Signal back in 2015.

At the start of 2021, Signal has reached even greater mainstream acceptance. WhatsApp is revamping its privacy policy to share even more data with Facebook, and many people clearly want to bring their conversations out of Mark Zuckerbergs view and embrace privacy.

While your communications on Signal are private, you arent anonymous. To sign up for Signal, you need a phone number. To talk to someone on Signal, your phone number is your identifier on Signal.

Thats by designSignal is designed to be a drop-in replacement for SMS. When you sign up for Signal and install the app, it will ask for access to the contacts on your phone. Signal securely scans your contacts to see which of them are also Signal usersit just examines the phone numbers and sees if those phone numbers are also registered on Signal.

So, if you and someone else communicate via SMS, you can both install Signal and easily switch. If you install Signal, you can see which of your contacts you can message via Signal instead of SMS. You dont have to ask them what their Signal handle isits just their phone number. (However, you can verify the safety numbers associated with a conversation to ensure youre talking directly with the person you think you are. Thats another useful security feature in Signal.)

If youre concerned about other people you talk to on Signal having your phone number, you can try signing up with a secondary phone number. But, realistically, if youre looking for a chat solution that isnt dependent on phone numbersfor example, an anonymous chat solution that just uses usernames instead of phone numbersthen Signal isnt what youre looking for.

Signal is simple to get started with. Just download the official Signal app from either Apples App Store for iPhone and iPador Google Play for Android. Go through the setup process to give Signal a phone number and access to your contacts. (Contact access is optional, but Signal is designed to work best with it.)

You can then start conversations from within the app. If you have someone in your contacts and that persons phone number is associated with a Signal account, youll see that you can contact them on Signal. Its seamless.

Want to start talking with someone on Signal instead of a different chat app? Just ask them to download it and sign up. Youll even get a notification when someone you know signs up for Signal.

You can also download the Signal desktop app for Windows, Mac, or Linux from the SIgnal Foundations website. This will sync messages from the Signal app on your phone to your computer. However, its optional.

CCleaner (Free) - yes, technically not an anti-malware, but, it does help with the cleanup

Browser Plugins- Bitdefender Trafficlight (Free)

Browser Plugins- Avast or AVG (Free)

Browser Plugins- Web Of Trust (Free)

Browser Plugins- and one other (not NOScript, or anything that would risk breaking the Js on the page) (Free)

There were likely 2 or 3 more on-demand scanners installed... Yes, all at once...

Before I stepped away from Windows (in 2017), I was looking into Sandboxing apps (aside from Comodo).

Sandboxie looked like what I wanted, but it failed a few Ransomeware tests that Comodo passed, so I stuck with Comodo.

Also- voodooshield was looking NICEEEEEE. To have an app that completely locks your computer down can be dangerous if it's buggy, but it seems like some of the strongest protection possible. (P.s. I have not looked into voodooshield lately)

......

My main desktop I have been running on is an iMac. I have Bitdefender Box. For Bitdefender, the overall app control and UI could be ALOT better, but I care most about the protection capabilities, and Bitdefender has proven itself.

WHAT'S THE PLAN

I will stick with Bitdefender Box, but I wanted to stack some other protection. Here's what I have in mind:

STACK 1 ---------- Current plan

Bitdefender Box/Total Security (Paid)

MalwareBytes (Paid)

Voodooshield (Paid)

Windows Defender (Free)

Browser Plugins- Bitdefender Trafficlight (Free)

Browser Plugins- MalwareBytes (Free)

Browser Plugins- Avast Online Security (Free)

STACK 2 ----------

Bitdefender Box/Total Security (Paid)

MalwareBytes (Paid)

Voodooshield (Paid)

Windows Defender (Free)

Comodo Internet Security (Free)

Browser Plugins- Bitdefender Trafficlight (Free)

Browser Plugins- MalwareBytes (Free)

Browser Plugins- Avast Online Security (Free)

STACK 3 ----------

Bitdefender Box/Total Security (Paid)

MalwareBytes (Paid)

Voodooshield (Paid)

Windows Defender (Free)

Comodo Internet Security (Free) - disable realtime scanning. Keep HIPS enabled and just use for running Sandboxed Comodo Dragon browser instances

Browser Plugins- Bitdefender Trafficlight (Free)

Browser Plugins- MalwareBytes (Free)

Browser Plugins- Avast Online Security (Free)

STACK 4 ----------

Bitdefender Box/Total Security (Paid)

MalwareBytes (Paid)

Voodooshield (Paid)

Windows Defender (Free)

Sandboxie

Browser Plugins- Bitdefender Trafficlight (Free)

Browser Plugins- MalwareBytes (Free)

Browser Plugins- Avast Online Security (Free)

I might cut the Avast plugin. I will see...

YOUR THOUGHTS

Assuming all of the above will work together without issue, 1. what do you think I should go with?

2. Do you have other recommendations for a stack that includes Bitdefender?

I am curious to learn what other people are using right now, for desktop apps, home firewalls, and browser plugins/extensions.

3. Is the current Voodooshield well-rated?

4. Are there alternatives to Voodooshield?

5. Is sandboxing still a thing?

6. What apps are recommended for sandboxing?

7. Are you successfully running 2 or more of the following; Bitdefender, MalwareBytes, Voodooshield?

8. Any other advice, industry news I should keep in mind (Yes, Backups are important)

9. What's your stack?

Internet ‘blackout’ in Uganda on eve of tense election – Minneapolis Star Tribune

KAMPALA, Uganda Ugandan authorities appeared to cut off internet access in the country Wednesday night on the eve of a tense presidential election, while a lawyer for leading opposition candidate Bobi Wine said all contact had been lost with him.

"Confirmed: Uganda is now in the midst of a nation-scale internet blackout," watchdog NetBlocks said in a statement saying connectivity levels had dropped to 33% of usual levels. Ugandans using leading internet service providers MTN and Airtel said they could no longer get online.

The U.S.-based counsel for Wine, Bruce Afran, told reporters that the candidate "is now in his compound with his wife and a single staff member who is unarmed and is not security personnel ... Security and police are stationed outside his home and effectively encircled it."

Afran said he feared Wine, a popular young singer and lawmaker, will once again be arrested, and he warned that "we're going to see protests on the streets" if they believe longtime President Yoweri Museveni is declared the winner of Thursday's vote because of fraud.

Wine, 38, has captured the imagination of many at home and abroad in his generational clash with the 76-year-old Museveni, who has rebuffed calls for his retirement after 34 years in power.

Hundreds of staffers for Wine's party are in detention, Afran said, saying "we believe this portends a a significant attempt at vote-rigging." He added that while the candidate has sent his children to the U.S. for their safety, "I am quite certain Bobi Wine is not leaving Uganda" regardless of what happens in the days ahead.

"He has told us he intends to remain in this fight," the counsel said.

Earlier Wednesday, the U.S. ambassador to Uganda said the embassy has canceled plans to observe the election , citing a decision by electoral authorities to deny accreditation to most members of the observation team.

Ambassador Natalie E. Brown expressed "profound disappointment" in a statement saying more than 75% of the accreditations requested had been denied.

"With only 15 accreditations approved, it is not possible for the United States to meaningfully observe the conduct of Uganda's elections at polling sites across the country," the statement said. "As we have stated previously, the United States takes no side in Uganda's upcoming elections."

Without "the robust participation of observers," the statement added, "Uganda's elections will lack the accountability, transparency and confidence that observer missions provide."

An electoral commission spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

The U.S. embassy statement came the morning after Museveni spoke harshly against development partners, Facebook and unnamed outside groups he accused of "arrogance."

Uganda's government has repeatedly alleged that foreigners are working in support of the opposition. Wine has been accused of being "an agent of foreign interests," which he denies.

Museveni announced that his government had shut down access to social media and blasted Facebook after the social network removed Ugandan accounts linked to his reelection campaign.

"That social channel you are talking about, if it is going to operate in Uganda, it should be used equitably by everybody who wants to use it," Museveni said of Facebook. "If you want to take sides against the (ruling party), then that group will not operate in Uganda."

Facebook said this week it had removed some Ugandan accounts because they engaged in alleged coordinated inauthentic behavior.

The allegations of outside interference have contributed to a charged atmosphere, with Museveni deploying the military in the streets of urban centers where authorities fear the opposition is planning riots that could overwhelm the regime.

Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, insists his campaign is nonviolent and he urges his supporters not to be intimidated by the heavy military deployment in Kampala, the capital.

At least 54 people were killed in November as the security forces put down riots sparked by the arrest of Wine, whose rallies were frequently broken up by police purportedly enforcing coronavirus control measures.

Wine's supporters allege that security forces are cracking down on his supporters. Many have suffered beatings, and at least 49 of Wine's associates and supporters have been criminally charged.

The European Union, which also is not deploying an observer mission, said in a statement Tuesday that excessive use of force by the security forces had tarnished the electoral process.

A United Nations spokesman said Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Ugandan authorities, "particularly the security forces, to show maximum restraint."

Human Rights Watch executive director Kenneth Roth told reporters in Geneva that the rights group is troubled by "Museveni's repeated use of violence by security forces to suppress" Wine's presidential campaign.

Museveni, he said, "seems to be using kind of every trick under the sun" to thwart Wine, including "beatings of his supporters, in some cases shooting and killing people."

Sarah Jackson, an Amnesty International official in the region, urged Ugandan authorities to end the shutdown of social media, saying that decision was "clearly intended to silence the few accredited election observers, opposition politicians, human rights defenders, activists, journalists and bloggers who are monitoring the elections."

Ugandan polls are often marred by allegations of rigging and militarization. Authorities disabled internet service on the day of the 2016 election. The country has never seen a peaceful transfer of power since independence from Britain in 1962.
