LONDON DeepMind, the U.K. artificial intelligence lab acquired by Google in 2014, has quietly hired a team of researchers in New York.

The company widely regarded as one of the leading AI firms in the world hired Facebook AI Research (FAIR) co-founder Rob Fergus to lead its New York team last June. Several people have joined Fergus's team in the last few months and DeepMind is actively recruiting in the city.

"Last year we were delighted to have computer vision and deep learning pioneer Rob Fergus join our team," a DeepMind spokesperson told CNBC. "Rob is based in New York and this exciting role will be a key part of his growing team there."

DeepMind declined to say how many people it has in New York but LinkedIn analysis suggests the number is between 10 and 15. "There is a small core group right now, which we'll carefully grow over time," a spokesperson said. The team is currently working from home but DeepMind said they'll work out of a Google building once lockdown restrictions are lifted.

While FAIR has less than 400 people, DeepMind employs around 1,000 people worldwide, with the bulk of those based at its London headquarters. The remainder are spread across satellite outposts in Mountain View (where Google is headquartered), Alberta, Montreal, and Paris.

New York is home to several prestigious AI labs at universities including New York University and Cornell Tech. But beyond FAIR and Google AI, there aren't many large industry AI labs in the city Google Brain doesn't have a significant presence there, for example.

Fergus is splitting his time across DeepMind and NYU, where he is a professor of computer science at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. He previously spent time at Oxford, MIT, and Caltech and has won a number of awards for his work.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, DeepMind has already hired several intellectual heavyweights in New York. Former Googler Christine Kaeser-Chen joined as a staff research engineer in February and Harvard graduate Ishita Dasgupta joined in December.

DeepMind and FAIR have been battling it out to hire the best AI talent in the world for almost a decade. They're hoping that these top AI researchers, who are sometimes paid around $1 million a year, will be able to create AI technology that can be harnessed by Google and Facebook, respectively.

Fergus co-founded FAIR, which is a direct rival to DeepMind, with AI pioneer Yann LeCun in 2013.

In Sept. 2018, when Fergus was at FAIR's New York office, he said in an interview that he was spending most of his time recruiting research scientists. At the time, he said that virtually everyone FAIR makes a job offer to also has an offer from the likes of Google, Amazon or Intel.

He added that FAIR tries to attract people by talking about its close relationships with academia and Facebook's product teams, as well as the fact that they open source the code on the vast majority of their research papers, which DeepMind hasn't always done.

You may as well relax, because the Sun's entry into Aries is well-poised to bestow with great physical and mental drive. You will receive a booster shot of energy. It's exactly what you need to beat back your challenges. Some processes have a momentum all of their own. The best you can do is accept their inevitability and then attempt to moderate their outcome. Try this week to be both realistic and pragmatic and all will be fine.

Virgo

You are wise, experienced and blessed with impressive maturity. So, rather than lowering the bar, you ought to raise it higher. For you as an individual the future has never looked better. The Sun's entry into Aries will help you focus less on the negative and more on the positive. You will succeed in capturing the good luck that is all around you. Given where you are, and what has happened so far, there is only one thing to do. Your best. Carry on as you are. You will make a big, effective difference to your situation. You are on the winning track.

Scorpio

It's good to say what's on your mind, but there are times when your recalcitrant spirit can land you in the doghouse. Some of your opinions have the potential to unleash unwelcome complications. You don't want to curl up in a ball of remorse on the sofa either because you feel physically exhausted or mentally drained. Luckily, you are currently blessed with an enhanced level of diplomatic skills. You will win with a minimum of effort. The Sun's entry into Aries will inspire you to persevere.

Sagittarius

There is an adjustment to be made now. The Sun's entry into Aries is bringing you to the point where it is necessary to make a tricky choice. When settling into any new environment, no matter how healthy, there is always a wobbly moment. You look back and miss the familiarity of the old routines and habits. The change threatens to upset the equilibrium you've worked so hard to establish. It may seem impossible, but you will be amazed with how a constructive mental attitude on your part will work miracles. The right kind of change will occur effectively and naturally, and in the best possible way.

Capricorn

It may seem at times that certain burdensome responsibilities will never end. Do keep in mind that it's not up to you to single-handedly save the world and solve all its problems. Auspicious alignments are moving into place that will free you. What's sapping your energy is not the amount of work that needs to be done. It's the fear that nothing will ever change or improve. You suspect that as fast as you solve one problem, another will emerge. Don't worry about that. The Sun's entry into Aries will bestow gifts upon you as a reward for all your trials. A most pleasant and unexpected surprise will speed things along.

Aquarius

The dramas and developments now taking place in your world are really just a reflection of an inner struggle. Your personal inner guide is always there for you. It'll help you wherever and whenever it can. It's a blessing that will follow you for your entire life. It'll drop hints and quietly whisper clues in your ear. It's up to you to develop your intuitive faculties and learn to trust them. Silencing the mind chatter is the key. The Sun's entry into Aries will take you by the hand and show you the way. It's not as difficult as you might think. In fact, it's quite easy. And it will exponentially increase your ability to solve problems.

Pisces

Relationships always require a bit of give and take. That's the general rule. A delicate balancing act is required even with the most reasonable of people. Pressure is driving you towardmaking a strident demand that could be construed as unreasonable. The Sun's entry in Aries is advising that you have all the charm and charisma needed to be at your most persuasive. All you want is an honest answer to a fair question. There's no need to play around with ifs and buts and maybes. Neither of you have to give away too much detail, but you both have a piece of news that you ought really to be sharing.

The Father (2021) Movie Review | Screen Rant – Screen Rant

The Father dives deep into the mind, delivering an engaging film that is unsettling, achingly sad, and is strengthened by Zellers assured narrative.

Florian Zeller makes his directorial debut with The Father, which he adapts to the screen with Christopher Hampton and is based on Zellers own play. With an utterly captivating and heartbreaking performance from Anthony Hopkins anchoring the film, this drama about a traumatized man with dementia is breathtaking and emotional. Zeller compartmentalizes and explores the titular characters pain, caught in the midst of his deteriorating memory while grasping onto anything he can remember. The Father dives deep into the mind, delivering an engaging film that is unsettling, achingly sad, and is strengthened by Zellers assured narrative.

The film is primarily told from the perspective of Anthony (Hopkins), who becomes disoriented, angry, and frustrated when he recalls specific memories that dont seem to line up with what hes being told. The audience sees his interactions with several people his daughter Anne (Olivia Colman), his caretaker Laura (Imogen Poots), a mysterious man he can't identify at first (Rufus Sewell) but it becomes increasingly clear that Anthony is experiencing several moments in time at once. It makes it hard to keep track of whats real, whats present, and whos who, with Anthony often speaking to someone he believes is Anne and her husband, though theyre played in these scenes by different actors. Facts from his and his daughter's life blurs for Anthony and hes never sure whether Anne is divorced, married, moving to Paris to be with someone, or what theyre having for dinner. In the midst of his growing confusion are moments of clarity, tinged with feelings of intense sadness and a possessiveness that underscores a lack of control as Anthonys mind slips further.

Related:The Most Anticipated Movies of 2021

Zeller delivers a confident directorial debut, deftly navigating the cognitive space to engage with Anthony's befuddlement while referencing a couple of story points that make clear what is and isn't happening (though it needs a rewatch to study the thrilling ways in which Zeller sets up and explores the story). The Father has all the trappings of a play adapted to film the use of a limited setting, with the characters moving in and out of house rooms and, later, inside a nursing home facility. However, it never feels constrained by them. Rather, Zeller employs the space to heighten the disconcertment and confusion.A seemingly spacious apartment is no longer welcoming, but alarmingly claustrophobic the more Anthony realizes something just isn't right.

Moments of Anthony looking out the window, as though waiting for someone or wanting to escape the confines of his deteriorating cognition, are nicely paired with scenes that convey the exact opposite. As an example, Anthony is incredibly possessive of his home and watch, fearing the loss of both and quickly turning accusatory whenever the reasoning goes against what he believes. While the audience is swept away into the maze of Anthonys mind, the more grounded moments in The Father stem from Colmans Anne, who is patient, loving, and fraying at the edges, caught between maintaining her strength and crying as she watches her father deteriorate. Colman, as always, is exceptional. While the film isnt focused on her as much as Anthony, her emotions are equally on display.

What The Father does astoundingly well is portray Anthony as a fully realized character. The film isn't interested in a story that emotionally manipulates its audience and forces them to merely sympathize with this man. Zeller accomplishes what Viggo Mortensen could not in Falling, another film about a man with dementia and his son trying to help him. Here, Zeller provides a character study while engaging with a story that feels as fractured as Anthony's mind, all without excusing the man's behavior or, in some cases, trying to understand it beyond the scope of the story. Anthony is charming and fun, but also deeply cruel and malicious, spitting hurtful words at Anne while comparing her to her sister, angrily yelling at Laura and mocking her upbeat intonation. Hopkins' portrayal is brilliant, seamlessly moving from one emotion to another, conveying devastating loss, befuddlement, and the distinctive terror that accompanies his slipping hold on his mind and memories. To watch him as he begins to understand what's going on is riveting and gut-wrenching all at once.

The Father is deep and meaningful, with Zeller more than willing to dive into Anthonys psyche, as well as explore his relationships without it ever feeling like the audience is being spoon fed information or forced to sympathize just for the sake of it. The film expertly weaves together a fantastic character exploration of a man whose mind is no longer in his control, all while it builds towards the reveal of a mysterious, traumatic time. Zeller is a confident filmmaker and, if The Father is any indication, viewers should keep an eye out for his work in the future.

The Secret Auction that Set Off the Race for AI Supremacy – WIRED

Hinton remained one of the few who believed it would one day fulfill its promise, delivering machines that could not only recognize objects but identify spoken words, understand natural language, carry on a conversation, and maybe even solve problems humans couldnt solve on their own, providing new and more incisive ways of exploring the mysteries of biology, medicine, geology, and other sciences. It was an eccentric stance even inside his own university, which spent years denying his standing request to hire another professor who could work alongside him in this long and winding struggle to build machines that learned on their own. One crazy person working on this was enough, he imagined their thinking went. But with a nine-page paper that Hinton and his students unveiled in the fall of 2012, detailing their breakthrough, they announced to the world that neural networks were indeed as powerful as Hinton had long claimed they would be.

Days after the paper was published, Hinton received an email from a fellow AI researcher named Kai Yu, who worked for Baidu, the Chinese tech giant. On the surface, Hinton and Yu had little in common. Born in postwar Britain to an upper-crust family of scientists whose influence was matched only by their eccentricity, Hinton had studied at Cambridge, earned a PhD in artificial intelligence from the University of Edinburgh, and spent most of the next four decades as a professor of computer science. Yu was 30 years younger than Hinton and grew up in Communist China, the son of an automobile engineer, and studied in Nanjing and then Munich before moving to Silicon Valley for a job in a corporate research lab. The two were separated by class, age, culture, language, and geography, but they shared a faith in neural networks. They had originally met in Canada at an academic workshop, part of a grassroots effort to revive this nearly dormant area of research across the scientific community and rebrand the idea as deep learning. Yu, a small, bespectacled, round-faced man, was among those who helped spread the gospel. When that nine-page paper emerged from the University of Toronto, Yu told the Baidu brain trust they should recruit Hinton as quickly as possible. With his email, Yu introduced Hinton to a Baidu vice president, who promptly offered $12 million to hire Hinton and his students for just a few years of work.

For a moment, it seemed like Hinton and his suitors in Beijing were on the verge of sealing an agreement. But Hinton paused. In recent months, hed cultivated relationships inside several other companies, both small and large, including two of Baidus big American rivals, and they, too, were calling his office in Toronto, asking what it would take to hire him and his students.

Sign up to get our best longform features, investigations, and thought-provoking essays, in your inbox every Sunday.

Seeing a much wider opportunity, he asked Baidu if he could solicit other offers before accepting the $12 million, and when Baidu agreed, he flipped the situation upside down. Spurred on by his students and realizing that Baidu and its rivals were much more likely to pay enormous sums of money to acquire a company than they were to shell out the same dollars for a few new hires from the world of academia, he created his tiny startup. He called it DNNresearch in a nod to the deep neural networks they specialized in, and he asked a Toronto lawyer how he could maximize the price of a startup with three employees, no products, and virtually no history.

As the lawyer saw it, he had two options: He could hire a professional negotiator and risk angering the companies he hoped would acquire his tiny venture, or he could set up an auction. Hinton chose an auction. In the end, four names joined the bidding: Baidu, Google, Microsoft, and a two-year-old London startup called DeepMind, cofounded by a young neuroscientist named Demis Hassabis, that most of the world had never heard of.

On My Mind: Paying Our Emotional Bills – WFAE

There have been a few times in my life some for good reason, some not when I have maxed out my credit cards.

Its a scary feeling to know that youre stretched about as far as you can go.

We have spent this last year with COVID-19 maxing out our emotional limits. And now, finally, it looks like we can begin to pay back that debt to ourselves.

President Biden hopes to make everybody in America eligible for a vaccine by May 1, with the hope of people being able to have small gatherings by July 4. If it happens, there will be some serious fireworks maybe enough to blow us all the way out of the holes weve dug for ourselves.

Because we have dug in deep over these past 12 months. Weve been isolated and depressed, overmedicated or undermedicated. Weve indulged old, bad habits, neglected showers and shaves. It has been like hibernating, except without the good nights sleep.

And of course for some of us the hurt has gone much deeper. Theres no good way to lose someone you love, but its especially cruel for it to happen from a virus that punished us for touching and hugging and laughing together.

There are others who survived the virus but still have lingering medical issues. And then there are the rest of us, who have been lucky so far to not get the worst of it. But every single one of us still bears some weight from what the virus has done to our communities, our country, our world.

I wonder whether weve all now got a little agoraphobia the fear of leaving safe places. So many of our normal routines, pre-COVID, now feel dicey. Even when the doctors and scientists give us the all-clear, how long will we still flinch when somebody at the next table coughs? How long will it still feel weird to pass the peace with a stranger at church?

Theres no psychological windfall coming, no way to pay back that debt all at one time. Were going to have to chip away at it.

Back before everything was digital, when you borrowed money for a house or a car, the bank gave you a payment book with a coupon you sent off with your check every month. The best thing about those was that once you made the last payment, you would have a little ceremony and burn the book.

Paying down our debts from COVID-19 wont be quite as clear. We wont know were paid in full until we wake up one morning and feel normal again. That day will be different for everybody. But it will feel so good to have burned this particular book.

Tai Chi vs. Yoga: What To Know About These Mind-Body Practices – Women’s Health

Mind-body movement offers the ultimate two-for-one combo: As you work on your physical health, strengthening your muscles and balancing out your body, you also nourish your mind in a major way. Two of the most powerful and ancient mind-body practices out theretai chi and yogahave become beloved across the globe in recent decades.

Both modalities challenge and ground you both physically and mentally by incorporating various postures and movements and connecting you to your body and breath.

However, though tai chi and yoga offer many similar benefits (science-backed benefits, might I add), they have different origins, histories, and styles.

Whether you ultimately opt for tai chi vs. yoga depends entirely on personal preference (though you can totally do both!), but there are a few things to know about what to expect in a class.

Ready to feel strong in all the ways? Use this guide to get familiar with tai chi and yoga's rich roots, what each practice looks like in real-time, and how to get started.

Though yoga and tai chi have unique histories and roots, both have existed for centuries and originated in Asia.

Before yoga spread across the globe and became the popular physical and mental practice that it is today, it began about 5,000 years ago as an Indian philosophy; a way to connect with divine spirits, says Kelly Turner, RYT, director of education for YogaSix. It was more about meditation and concentrationand moving toward a place where a person could overcome the burdens of being human and find liberation and enlightenment, she explains.

In fact, it wasn't until the 1900s that the physical aspect of yoga became more prominent in India. The physical postures were designed to help people sit more comfortably in meditation, Turner says. Eventually, a few key yogis led the charge in creating the yoga practices that we know in the Western world. Today, there are a number of different styles of yoga students may practice, from invigorating vinyasa to quiet restorative yoga.

Tai chi, meanwhile, dates back to about the 1600s and originated in the villages of China, says Shifu Pam Dye, instructor at Forever Tai Chi in New York. As with yoga, several styles of tai chi have evolved throughout its existence, including Yang, Sun, and Chen. (Chen, which is considered the original style, was created by Chen Wangting.) The practice spread from China to the U.S. in the 1950s.

Also like yoga, tai chi incorporates mental and physical practices. However, tai chis roots lie in martial arts. Each posture you see people doing has a martial art or self-defense application to it, she says. It may look like gentle movements with names that come from animals or naturebut if someone comes at you with a punch or grabs you from behind, you can use the postures to defend yourself.

Still, much of tai chi's focus is on creating harmony and balance of your mind, body, and spiritand letting go of unnecessary tension, adds Margaret Matsumoto, director of teacher training at the Tai Chi Foundation.

Both yoga and tai chi have several different specific types of practices under their main mind-body umbrellas. Somelike Ashtanga or power yoga and Chen-style tai chiare more intense, while otherslike yin or restorative yoga and qigong, which is a collection of separate basic movements instead of one long sequence of flowing moves, according to Matsumotoare more low-key.

Regardless of the unique style you practice, though, both yoga and tai chi involve a series of poses. In a class, your instructor will guide you into and through each pose and offer tips on proper posture and alignment, according to Dye.

Missed our WH Live+ Movement and Meditation event with Latham Thomas? Check it out:

Whether you pause in a particular pose for several breaths (or even minutes) or continuously flow from one to the next, depends on the style, says Dye. She refers to dynamic tai chi as meditation in motion.

That said, while some yoga instructors may focus on specific areas of the body (like shoulders and hips), tai chi takes a more holistic approach. "Tai chi is interested in integrated movements, so the whole body operates as one, Matsumoto says. Rather than working the body like a machine, tai chi works to relax unnecessary tensions within it. So, while tai chi is rarely (if ever) practiced on the floor, certain yoga poseslike bridge and savasanatake place on the mat.

Tai chi also stands out from yoga because of its martial arts and self-defense element, which becomes more prominent as you to get into more advanced classes, says Dye.

However, despite their physical differences, both yoga and tai chi involve a focus on your breath. Youll do mostly deep, diaphragmatic breathing in tai chi, but you might do different types of breathing techniques in yoga, Dye says. Kundalini yoga, for example, incorporates different types of breathing techniques to help you shift out of "fight-or-flight" mode and into a more restful state, Turner explains.

To date, theres more in-depth research on yoga than there is on tai chi. Still, both have some science to back up their benefits.

Research has found that yoga, for example, may help with stress, depression, and anxiety, while protecting brain function and potentially decreasing inflammation in the body.

Studies suggest that tai chi, meanwhile, can help healthcare workers manage stress, while helping college students relax and sleep better. Research also backs up that tai chi can improve the health outcomes of those with underlying health issues like heart disease and arthritis.

Meanwhile, other research shows that both practices may help with pain management. Both yoga and tai chi also improve your balance, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.

Keep in mind, though, Dye says you have to be in the right state of mind to reap the benefits of these practices. You have to be relaxed, she says. If youre not fully relaxed, youre not going to get the full benefits of stress reduction and flexibility. You may feel the physical part, but if youre not fully relaxed, youre not going to get the mind part.

Tai Chi vs. Yoga: Which Is Right For You? Here's How To Decide

Thanks to the postures involved in both practices, both tai chi and yoga will help you strengthen your muscles and improve mobility. If your goal is to support your overall fitness, try taking both a yoga and a tai chi class to see which you like better. Lots of people take interest in tai chi classes for better overall health, Dye says. It also appeals to athletes who want better full-body awareness and to move more efficiently, Matsumoto adds.

One caveat: Since yoga often involves holding various deep stretches for longer, it should be your go-to if flexibility is top-priority, says Turner.

When it comes to stress relief, both practices are equally awesome. Yoga and tai chi both have strong mental components, so you really cant go wrong with either.

And for those seeking weight loss? There is some research on yogas effect on body composition, with at least one systematic review and meta-analysis suggesting it can help reduce body mass index in overweight and obese individuals. That said, you might want to opt for a power yoga or vinyasa class, which will be more rigorous. If you're more interested in tai chi, a Chen-style class, which may include some explosive movements like jumps and kicks, is the way to go.

If youre having trouble deciding which to try, Turner suggests chatting with studio staff or instructors to figure out the different types of classes they offer and what you should know ahead of time. Then, try out different instructors and styles to get a feel for what you like. There are so many ways to customize your experience, she says.

The bottom line: No matter what your fitness and mindfulness goals look like, yoga and tai chi both provide a pretty powerful opportunity to bring them together. Ultimately, whatever practice keeps you coming back for more mind-body movement is the best option for you.

From a Faith Perspective: Daylight Savings Time reminds us the long winter of COVID is almost over – Bucks County Courier Times

Richmond Shreve| Correspondent

Daylight saving time: When does it start?

Ready for more sun? Daylight saving time is right around the corner.

staff video, USA TODAY

Daylight Savings Time begins today. Its a secular observance of our northern transition from long nights to long days. As the days lengthen, we welcome the first hints of spring like the songs of birds, green shoots of crocuses and the swelling buds on cherry trees. Easter, Holi, Passover and other spiritual celebrations of grace and renewal are observed at this time of year. We enjoy light.

This years celebrations will be amplified by the expectation that the long winter of COVID-19 will soon be over. Effective vaccines are being manufactured faster than our health systems can administer them. Soon there will be enough for anyone and everyone to be protected, not just the highly vulnerable and essential personnel.

Not all see vaccination as a godsend. Dark and sinister imaginings and deep distrust haunt the minds of some, making them hesitant. Health professionals, epidemiologistsand others with firsthand knowledge of the facts are incredulous. They know that inaction is a decision with consequencesbad ones both personally and socially.

We cherish our right to believe what we choose in all things, be they spiritual or secular. We respect the right of others to perceive the world differently. Indeed, we often learn and grow through listening to the views of others. So how do we engage with friends whose deeply held beliefs we dont accept? How do we foster light over darkness?

Author Karen Tibbals says we should listen and ask good questions. She offers these questions concerning the vaccine issue:

Her concept is simple; these questions encourage deeper thinking about what one knows and how one knows it. Her newsletter and her book,Persuade, Dont Preach, give many more examples of good questions. They foster openness in both our friends and in us.

Our listening lets our friends speak their mind while examining how they know what they believe. In thinking about and responding to such queries, our information can be shared and examined without preaching. And by being open, we admit light where darkness and doubt dominated our conversation.

For me, as a Quaker, this is an essential personal spiritual practice and one I find extremely challenging. To hold an important question without hastening to answer or dismiss it, to be open to answers that are discordant or upsetting, and to listen for the still, small voice that enlightensthese practices require slowing down, asking good questions and above all being a committed and thoughtful listener.

This is particularly hard when the stakes are high. If large numbers of people refuse vaccination, science says that vaccine-resistant variants of the COVID-19 virus may get a foothold and spread.

Not to be vaccinatedhas consequences for all, not just the individual. Trusting in science, Id like to mandate vaccination. But vaccinating someone against their will runs counter to American values of personal freedoms.

As a practical matter, our only effective option is to persuade. We are powerless to compel others to believe anything at all. In fact, our friends must always persuade themselves by reflecting on how they know what they believe.

Isnt that exactly what we ourselves aspire to do to think for ourselves, to be autonomous?Mind the light.

Fire Brings Down The Internet, NFT Mania And More: Weekly Top News – Analytics India Magazine

For 13 and a half years, every single day, Beeples digital artist Mike Winkelman posted a new work of art online. All this digital art is put together as a collage that sold for over $69 million at a recent Christies auction. Beeples art features a Pikachu with an anorexic human body, obese Mario, Mickey mouse as a strong man and other unthinkable imagery of these thousands of works. Weird, strange and stunning art attracting high prices is nothing new. But, Beeple has delivered a first of its kind art.

Titled Everyday: The First 5000 Days, is a unique digital art authenticated with a unique non-fungible token(NFT). This is also the first time that a major auction house has accepted cryptocurrency, in this case, Ether. According to MakersPlace, which issued the blockchain based NFT to Beeples work, an NFT is a collectible digital asset. NFTs exist on and are authenticated via a blockchain, which is a publicly accessible online database not owned by any central authority, where the data cannot be altered. The auction stated that the $69 million collage will be delivered directly from Beeple to the buyer, accompanied by a unique NFT encrypted with the artists unforgeable signature and uniquely identified on the blockchain.

Blockchain technology provides the mechanism for which NFTs are authenticated by digitally attaching a permanent signature and establishing a digital artwork provenance. The most popular blockchain that currently enables NFT technology is the Ethereum blockchain. Earlier this week, Twitters CEO also boarded the NFT bandwagon as he auctioned his first tweet from 2006. The bids to this tweet have already reached $2.5 million, and the auction will take place on March 21st.

The London based AI research lab DeepMind acquired by Googles parent company Alphabet Inc., back in 2014, is setting up its shop in New York, USA. DeepMind is known for building reinforcement learning algorithms that can detect protein folds, beat Go world champion and more. According to reports, DeepMind is already on a headhunting spree with Facebook AI co-founder Rob Fergus in charge. Fergus and AI researcher Yann Lecun were instrumental in setting up Facebooks AI wing back in 2013. New York is home to Facebooks and Googles AI teams, and with DeepMind, the parent company Alphabet will gain a firm footing within the US.

On Wednesday, a fire broke out at Frances OVHcloud at destroyed one of four data centers in Strasbourg location. The Strasbourg centres were among OVHclouds 17 data centres in France and 32 globally. OVHs founder Octave Klaba tweeted about the fire and asked his customers to activate the Disaster Recovery Plan. But, the fire did enough damage already. According to Reuters, the fire has taken down millions(~3.6 million) of websites of government agencies portals, banks, shops, news websites and more. For customers that have been impacted, we are offering replacement infrastructures (Bare Metal, Hosted Private Cloud and Public Cloud) in our Roubaix (RBX) and Gravelines (GRA) datacentres, said OVH in a press release. By the end of the week, our support teams and Technical Account Managers will define a support plan for our customers, which have not yet activated their DRP. The fire accident also happened just two days after OVHcloud announced its plan towards IPO. The cloud vs on-premise debate might gain new momentum as the OVHcloud disaster puts cloud data security under the scanner.

On Monday, Paypal announced that it has agreed to acquire crypto security company Curv to accelerate and expand its initiatives to support cryptocurrencies and digital assets. Based in Tel Aviv, Israel, Curv offers cloud-based infrastructure services for digital asset security.

Back in October last year, PayPal made its crypto ambitions clear to the public as it announced its commitment to play an active role in how the digital currencies will play a role in the future of financial services and commerce. PayPal recently has also created a blockchain based business unit for crypto and digital currencies. Curv will join the newly formed group, with its strong team of technologists adding technical expertise to PayPal, said the company.

In a recent interview, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg posited that virtual reality has great implications in combating climate change. Zuckerberg believes that smart glasses will teleport people across the globe, to their favorite places and people, and discourage people from travelling more. 2020 has already shown how quickly the world embraced work from home, virtual conferences and can still function. Daily commutes leave carbon footprints, which, according to Zuckerberg, can be curtailed if people start picking up Augmented Reality as an alternative. If that does happen, Facebooks Oculus, which makes state-of-the-art AR/VR headsets, is well-positioned to benefit from the transition. Later this year, Facebook will launch a pair of smart glasses in partnership with Ray-Ban.

Tech giants Google and Microsoft used journalism as a pretext to spar with each other. In his written testimony Microsofts President Brad Smith warned that Googles overreach can be detrimental to journalism and to sharing of information in general. Smith used Googles example to urge the government to play an active role. indispensable role the free press plays in our democracy and because progress in resuscitating news and journalism back to health is, at best, spotty, said Smith. Google responded more tersely to Microsofts sudden interest in evolving journalism. The search giant accused Microsoft of using old tactics of attacking rivals and lobbying for regulations for selfish reasons. They are now making self-serving claims and are even willing to break the way the open web works in an effort to undercut a rival. And their claims about our business and how we work with news publishers are just plain wrong, said Kent Walker, SVP, Global Affairs at Google. The company even reminded Microsoft of their recent embarrassment in the SolarWinds attack which allowed the hackers to breach many government institutions and thousands of companies using vulnerabilities in Microsoft. Google hinted that Microsofts antics are a misdirection from their own follies. As the US regulators close in on their antitrust case, the war of words between the tech giants will make it even easier for them as the rivals try to expose each other in every way possible.
