Structural engineering software assists the design of Mbius towers – Planning, BIM & Construction Today

In this case study,SCIA Engineerreveals how its structural engineering software made modelling of theMbius towers structure very practical.

The Mbius towers distinguish themselves from their angular neighbour in theBrussels North District by their completely elliptical shape.

The 19 (Tower I)and 23 (Tower II) floors above the ground, measuring 73m and 98m respectively,offer nearly 62,000 m of office space.

In addition, a 2-level basement provides300 parking spaces.

The towers are built on the foundation slab of a former construction, whichresulted in a limited construction height. Therefore, a flat slab was chosen as asolution, with locally integrated steel beams transferring smaller column loadsto the parking grid.

The office floors are made with hollow-core slabs and in-situ casts flat slabs. For the frame, prefabricated beams and columns in high strength concrete are used. A 3-level high steel structure on the top provides space for technical rooms.

In this project, SCIA Engineer was used for the analysis of global stability, for the calculation of deformation of the tower taking into account the cracked lintel shear beams, for the check of wind comfort and generally as a design tool providing a reference model for load takedown.

In aBIM workflow, the derivedforces were used for the detailed design.

The Revit link made modelling of the steel structure very practical. For the modelling of the challenging floor shape, varying local surface loads and floor elements with subregions were used.

Elon Musk calls for engineers, workers to move to Texas for SpaceX – CNET

Starship prototype SN9 before its fateful launch in Texas earlier this year.

SpaceX founder Elon Musk has a vision for the company's presence in Texas where it's rapidly building (and rapidly exploding) Starship spacecraft prototypes. He sees the area, which he has unofficially named Starbase, growing by several thousand people over the next couple of years.

Musk put out a plea on Tuesday for engineers, technicians and builders to relocate to Texas and join SpaceX. "Please consider moving to Starbase or greater Brownsville/South Padre area in Texas and encourage friends to do so!" Musk tweeted.

Musk called for "essential support personnel of all kinds." A quick scan of open positions for Brownsville shows SpaceX is looking to hire plenty of engineers, but also cooks, safety technicians, welders, security officers, managers and crane operators.

SpaceX didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Musk also said in a tweet Tuesdaythat he plans to donate $20 million to Cameron County schools and $10 million to nearby Brownsville to help revitalize the city's downtown. He promised more details next week.

The City of Brownsville Twitter account cheered the news, tweeting in response, "On the border, by the sea and beyond! Grateful for your support in making Brownsville a launching pad to Mars."

The series of tweets about hiring and donations came on the same daySpaceX's latest Starship prototype, SN11, exploded during a test flight. SpaceX is still trying to keep its test vehicles from blowing up during flight or shortly after landing. SN11's demise appeared to scatter debris across a wide area.

There have been plenty of indications that Musk and SpaceX intend to turn a chunk of Texas into a teaming hub of space activity. Besides development and test flights, the company seems to haveambitions for creating a "21st century Spaceport" resort in Texas.

If all goes as planned, SpaceX's Starbase might truly earn its sci-fi-inspired name.

What exactly is public relations? I think every PR pro has been asked this question a hundred times.

However, its sometimes worse when people think they know what public relations is and start referring to a TV show like Scandal or a movie where the public relations professional is the fixer for a celebrity trying to hide the truth from the mass public. This scenario is amusing at first until you realize that the person truly has no idea what you do for a living.

When Im asked what I do, I occasionally explain with a smile that Im a perception engineer.

After a long pregnant pause, a fellow PR flack who overhears my description usually audibly chuckles or gives me a knowing glare. But think about it. The term perception engineer is actually an appropriate description of public relations. Our ultimate goal in PR is to influence what others think about a company, product, person or topic.

While the target audience may be unique depending on the situation, the overarching goal to influence what people think remains the same regardless of the tools we use (e.g., social media, pitching reporters, op-eds). The effort to influence also remains the same regardless of the communication need (e.g., crisis, pro-active, reactive, internal).

Being a perception engineer is significantly different than being an influence peddler. Our job is to engineer strategies that will actually influence our target audience to change the way they think about or perceive something. Forget about thinking outside the box; we, as perception engineers, reshape the box. In contrast, an influence peddler pushes the same wallpaper messaging from the box to everyone in sight. For PR pros, its that personalization of the message and risk of failure that keeps public relations fun, challenging and vital.

There are different examples of how to engineer perception. Sometimes an entire business can be built around selling a perception. Other times, the strategy can be centered on breaking a long-held practice, demonstrating and highlighting something uncommon.

Let me share some business examples:

Open rates for email or mass mailings are statistically very small, so if you want 1,000 people to see what youve sent them, you need to send several thousand more, knowing that most of your efforts will be ignored. Yet an actual, handwritten (not computer printed) first-class stamped letter sent to your home has an extremely high open rate because the person the letter is addressed to believes it is a personalized letter just for them. Simply Noted is an automated handwritten letter company that helps businesses communicate and build relationships through real, pen-written letters. Companiessend in addresses and messages, andthe companys proprietary technology writes out the personalized cards and envelopes with real pens at scale. The perception is that its truly handwritten, and the goal is for this to increase open rates.

Another example would be a local Phoenix-area company called Forrest Anderson Plumbing and Air Conditioning. The family-owned business is now in its third generation but has one glaring difference compared to nearly 90% of plumbing and HVAC companies--its led by a woman. The company doesnt spend a lot of money on paid advertising but has done a great job sharing its story as a women-led business. Its leader, Audrey Monell, has been featured on the cover of national industry magazines and has won numerous local and national awards as a female owner in a heavily male-dominated industry. By breaking a long-held perception and highlighting how the company is different, the company has engineered its own perception, which has helped the company grow and expand.

Now, when you think of public relations, think of perception engineering. Companies that excel at this or implement strategic public relations plans can generate impressive results to benefit the companys overall goals, ranging from selling products, landing clients, employee retention, and more.

Calculated to backfire: Maths and physics cant be optional for engineering entrance – The Indian Express

The Approval Process Handbook released by the All India Council for Technical Education for the forthcoming year wherein it announced that physics and mathematics will no longer be compulsory subjects in classes X and XII for entry to engineering and other technical education programmes was a bombshell for academics and scientists all over the country and outside.

National Education Policy 2020 states that the highest priority must be given to mathematics at the pre-primary level and in some ways speaks of making mathematics mandatory at that level to achieve foundational literacy and numeracy skills. Mathematics develops our reasoning capability, helps us to cultivate analytical thinking, quickens our mind, and can be applied in day-to-day life. But what has actually happened is the reverse.

The provision of multiple choices of courses in the NEP has been perversely interpreted to mean and include core subjects like physics, mathematics, chemistry and other sciences, whereas it was only to be within electives a complete misplaced concept of flexibility. A section of students may benefit from this but for the country as a whole it could prove to be the proverbial trojan horse.

Mathematics is one of the most distinguished disciplines which has a continuum of applications, from zero to infinite. At times, it differentiates between chaos and stability and sometimes it integrates different disciplines of knowledge. From basics to advanced concepts, mathematics finds use in all. If engineering is the body, mathematics and physics are its atma. There cannot be engineering without physics, chemistry and mathematics. No amount of bridge programmes that the Handbook talks about can fill the gap, if the student does not have sufficient mathematics or sciences background.

Ancient India made several important contributions through scholars like Aryabhata, Brahmagupta, Bhaskaracharya and Varahamihira. The decimal number system and the concept of zero was a gift to the world by Indian mathematicians. Trigonometry and modern definitions of sine and cosine were advanced in India. Mathematical marvels like the Jantar Mantar located in Jaipur, Ujjain, Mathura and Varanasi and the Konark temple are our heritage. The intermix of astronomy and mathematics in these is amazing. Could the engineers of those times have constructed them if they did not learn mathematics? Throughout the ages, emphasis on mathematics and sciences has been enormous in our society. Why do we want to junk this rare legacy and clear advantage?

Mathematics is indeed the mother of all science. In electrical engineering, circuit equations cannot be solved without the differential equations. Electromagnetic theory cannot be understood without calculus, triple integrals and integration over closed surfaces. Linear algebra is the heart of learning circuit theory and signal processing. In electronics engineering, one needs to understand the various mathematical concepts based on differential, integral calculus and complex numbers. In order to use the right material for a project, civil engineers measure the strength of the materials and apply chemical equations to judge strength. Engineering thermodynamics and heat transfer involve concepts of heat waves and gradients as explained by the Laplacian operator.

Divergence, geometrical concepts are needed for analysing shape factors. Logarithm of heat is used to determine the temperature driving force for heat transfer in flow systems like heat exchangers. Can forces and velocities be ever calculated without mathematics? Mechanical engineering uses geometry and algebra for CAD/CAM and rapid prototyping. If programmers are working on high-end technologies such as machine learning, artificial intelligence or blockchain technologies, they should have a strong foundation in mathematics and subjects such as statistics, calculus and probability besides computer science fundamentals.

What impact would this decision have on the quality of engineering education in general and on the JEE exam in particular? Students may stop studying maths and physics in schools since they will be assured an engineering education anyway. The importance of subjects themselves would plummet, for if the students of engineering do not study them who else would in future. It will reduce the pool of future scientists and engineers in the country, thereby adversely affecting research organisations like the DRDO, ISRO, BARC, TIFR.

Internationally, the credibility of Indian scientists and engineers will take a serious beating.

Fortunately, the writ of the AICTE does not run in the institutions of national importance like IITs, NITs and IISERs as they are created under separate acts of Parliament. Their respective councils must be on an overdrive to find ways and means to cushion themselves from the fallout of this disastrous decision, especially the IITs, which will never allow the JEEs brand equity to be diluted in this fashion.

The reason behind making these subjects optional is not far to seek and seems to be more about commerce than education. Due to the shrinking of the economy, jobs have become few and far between, with the result that the number of seats in engineering colleges that are not getting filled in the last five years has been almost 40 per cent. During the academic year 2020-21 nearly 180 professional colleges, including engineering institutes, were shut down, probably the highest number of closures of technical institutions in the last nine years.

Considering the cost of setting up a typical engineering college at Rs 50 crore without the cost of land, the total amount of investment by these edupreneurs put together is a staggering amount and commensurate to that is their clout. An expanded base of intake will surely benefit them as also those aspiring to become doctors but could not, and who can now have a shot at engineering as well. Whereas this may ensure that the tills of the low-end engineering colleges are kept ringing, it is a sure way of tossing the nations age-old advantage in a robust scientific and engineering education system out of the window for ever.

Todd Nightingale, senior vice president and general manager of networking and cloud, indicated that Cisco networking automation, combined with the CX Cloud platform, make it easier for IT pros to manage and monitor environments that require split-second decision making.

Not only can IT pros use surveillance cameras to monitor live video feed of people in motion at the vaccination site, but also they can use deployed IoT sensors to monitor the temperature of coolers to ensure that vaccines, which require storage at very cold temperatures, arent compromised by storage techniques.

With CX Cloud and a tool called LaunchPad to enable IT pros to monitor multiple COVID-19 vaccine administration sites. That means accelerating our global pandemic recovery, Nightingale said.

Experts note that cloud computing is now table stakes for IoT environments, but enlisting IoT, automation and cloud for real-time action also brings new layers of challenge.

To fully exploit the benefits of cloud computing requires the adoption of cloud-native technologies., said Roy Illsley, Omdia IT ecosystem and operations. However, cloud-native will increase complexity and requires a certain amount of automation to make it operate effectively.

Infrastructure as Code Key to Networking Automation

Cloud integration is key to generating effective, accurate IoT data.

But another key part of the equation is networking automationa long-standing goal of Cisco and other networking providers, which have been moving away from their hardware lineage.

Traditionally, networking has been configured in hardware, which often requires switches and routers to be configured one by one. But over the past several years, networking vendors such as Cisco, Juniper and Palo Alto have moved to software-defined networking principles that enable hardware switching to be configured, replicated and managed through software.

Nightingale highlighted the importance of these Infrastructure as Code principles at the Cisco Live keynote. He indicated that networking programmability enables DevOps to deploy infrastructure in an automated, turnkey way so that they can keep pace with the speed of business.

More and more of those users are embracing a new automation strategy: Infra as Code, Nightingale said. The ability to deploy hundreds of thousands of containers, hundreds of workloads, in just a few lines of code is incredibly powerful. With Infrastructure as Code, developers can manage physical infrastructure as software and deploy with unprecedented speed.

Nightingale noted that this kind of automation enables IT pros to focus less on the slog of configuring infrastructure and more on creating scalable, secure and flexible infrastructure that can enable real-time processes.

Networking programmability makes the care and feeding of IT infrastructure less time-consuming and enables IT pros to turn their attention to more strategic issues.

With the click of a button, I can deploy a massive private cloud using simple workflow automation, gathering UCS [Unified Compute System] compute, storage, and any other resources including networking. This gives us a powerful graphical interface to develop repeatable workloads that can radically simplify how we deploy hybrid cloud. It can give us a simply way to deploy the networking infra which allows for secure segmentation and connectivity for our Kubernetes clusters.

At the same time, while automation is critical to bring flexibility and turnkey management to these kinds of environments, its no small challenge to bring data center forces into discipline. Most organizations have only begun on this automation journey given IT silos.

Addressing the automation gap, which is the gap between the manual ability to manage a data center and the complexity of the modern data center, is one of the biggest challenges faced by organizations today, Illsley said.

Infrastructure as Code Becomes Critical During COVID-19

Nightingale noted that with COVID-19, Infrastructure as Code has become even more critical as remote workers can be productive in remote home environments.

Our infrastructure has to have the insights to tell us what is really happening whether workers are at home or in the office and to change our infrastructure with the click of a button, he said.

Ultimately, Nightingale said that the pandemic has shone a light on the importance of Infrastructure as Code to create repeatable, secure and scalable Infrastructure.

If we can provide real agility to react to changing needs, we can serve our users. We have seen this over the past year and finding ways to keep critical services running and workers working from home.
