Informatica streamlines APAC operations amid growing cloud business – ComputerWeekly.com

Informatica has streamlined its Asia-Pacific operations to better meet the growing demand for cloud-based data management platforms in the region.

In 2020, the software supplier decided to concentrate its staff and operations across the region in the key markets of Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney, and Tokyo, according to its vice-president and general manager for Asia-Pacific and Japan, Tony Frey.

Frey described the move, which came into full force in the third quarter last year, as a big change that would enable Informatica to scale to the next level. As a company, were not as big as Microsoft and for us to scale and continue to put Informatica staff into markets like Thailand and Vietnam was just not the right model, he added.

In those developing markets, including the Philippines and Indonesia, where Informatica no longer has direct operations, Frey said the company will rely on local distributors and partners such as Deloitte and Accenture to fulfil market demand. The new go-to-market strategy appears to be working, going by the companys recent growth and business projections.

Our business has grown year-over-year for two to three consecutive years in the market, said Frey. Specifically, weve grown the annual recurring revenue of our cloud business by over 40% from 2019 to 2020, and we're expecting over 40% growth in 2021 over 2020.

The company has over 2,000 Asia-Pacific customers who rely on its data management platform in areas such as data integration, data quality, data governance and master data management, among others. Data integration and data quality are often cited as the top two challenges that enterprises face with data management.

Informatica has come a long way since its early days as a supplier of on-premise extract, transform, load (ETL) tools to move data from its source to a data storage system, typically a data warehouse. It is now focused on delivering cloud-based offerings as more enterprise store and process data using public cloud services.

Frey said that for the past few years, Informatica has not only ported but rebuilt its software into cloud-native services running on Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud through partnerships with hyperscale cloud suppliers.

In a region where cloud adoption varies across countries, Frey singled out Australia as a key market which has the keenest users of cloud-based data management tools, followed by Singapore.

For those that are behind the curve, Frey said while there is pressure on companies to move to the cloud, it will not happen overnight.

Weve got to be prepared to set up our business so that we can catch the customer when they're ready to do it, he added. We can encourage them and show them a roadmap as to how to do it.

For example, through Informaticas new Intelligent Data Management Cloud platform that facilities data management processes from data ingestion to lifting and shifting data, Frey said enterprises will find it easier to navigate the challenges of managing data on the cloud.

That's a big part of what we're doing in certain markets to educate customers in a predictable and streamlined manner on how they can start that process, he added.

Meanwhile, enterprises that want to keep using on-premise software can do so through a software maintenance programme for existing Informatica customers who will continue to receive support for their investments, Frey said, adding, however, that there will be new products that will only be available through the cloud.

Frey acknowledged the competition in the data management landscape, which is dotted with players ranging from storage suppliers to backup and recovery software companies, adding that Informatica differentiates itself through its track record and laser focus on data management.

Weve been working in this area for 25 straight years, and we have only worked in this area, he said. So, everything that we do is 100% core to data management, whether that be ingestion, data integration or master data management.

Were not a storage company, were not a data warehouse and were sticking with the rules that we've always played, which is how do you make the most out of data once it gets to where it needs to go?

We create integration across different silos of data that exists in companies, which will continue to operate in a hybrid world where a lot of systems are still going to reside on-premise while others will go to the cloud when it makes sense, said Frey.

Those are extremely complex problems and theyre at the core of driving value in these companies.

Line of Duty, season 6 episode 5 recap: Davidson is in deep but who fired those cliffhanger shots? – The Telegraph

Well, blow me down, its James Nesbitt

Heres where it starts to get really complicated. The SIO (Senior Investigating Officer) who made such a cack-handed job of the Christopher investigation was none of other than DCI Marcus Thurwell. If you recognise that name, give yourself a huge gold star and a promotion to Acting DI he was last referenced in series three, in conjunction with the Sands View Boys Home scandal. Thurwell was the SIO into the suicide of the Sands View whistleblower, Oliver Stephens-Lloyd.

He had taken early retirement and was last spotted swanning about in deck shoes on a jetty in Spain, where he bears an uncanny resemblance to James Nesbitt (the actor who only a few weeks back was complaining he had never been cast in Line of Duty fellas, hes played us). So, Vella was about to dig out the ugly truth about the death of Lawrence Christopher did Lee and Carl Banks tip off Thurwell? Is Thurwell H? Does H stand for Him from Cold Feet?

Not complicated enough for you? Okay. Also on Thurwells team for the Christopher investigation were none other than DCI Ian Buckells (Nigel Boyle), bent copper and OCG fall guy, and Chief Constable Philip Osborne (Owen Teale), the police chief who is currently putting the kibosh on all anti-corruption investigations and closing AC-12. Blimey, this goes deep.

But why was the Christopher killing covered up in the first place? Surely throwing a few racist custody officers and/or gang of neer-do-wells under the bus would have been easier? Well One of the racist thugs who attacked Christopher was Darren Hunter, son of OCG head honcho Tommy Hunter, who it seems must have put pressure on Thurwell (and possibly Buckells and Osborne) to ensure his boy walked free.

That boy, of course, we now know is related to DCI Joanne Davidson, the SIO on Operation Lighthouse, the investigation into the murder of Gail Vella, who it seems was killed for digging into the death of Lawrence Christopher Making sense yet?

Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) would be proud of Arnott, who has doggedly followed his hunch about a bent copper. Unfortunately for Hastings, that bent copper is him. Arnott received the forensics report on the cash he found in Steph Corbetts attic and, lo and behold, it was the same cash given to Hastings in that dodgy deal from series five. But why would Hastings give 50,000 to John Corbetts widow?

Arnott discovered the truth (or, as this is Line of Duty, the temporary truth) in his prison chat with Lee Banks, who informed Arnott it was Hastings who told him that Corbett was an undercover police officer. So: whether deliberately or not, Hastings got Corbett killed, and the 50,000 is guilt money.

Calvin University Selects Noah Toly As Provost – News – Calvin News

Calvin Universitys provost search committee has recommendedNoah Toly as the universitys next provost. Toly currently serves at Wheaton College as executive director of the Center for Urban Engagement, chair of urban studies, and professor of urban studies and politics & international relations.

Calvin conducted a national search for the provost position, and Tolys name rose to the top of a highly qualified and diverse pool of candidates. PresidentMichael Le Roy and professor of chemistry and biochemistryKumar Sinniah co-chaired the 13-member search committee which included representatives from the universitys faculty and administration.

We are delighted to welcome Noah to Calvin. He is an accomplished academic, a deeply committed Christian, and is enthusiastic about the Calvin community and the Reformed faith, said Le Roy, who appointed Toly following the search committees recommendation. His teaching, scholarship, and community engagement represent his commitment to seeking understanding and promoting the flourishing of all people, which is what we are aspiring to as well at Calvinto be a trusted partner.

Tolyhas spent much of his time in academia at Wheaton College. Its where his journey started as an undergraduate studying interdisciplinary studies and Spanish, and where he later returned to teach after earning a masters and doctorate from the University of Delaware in urban affairs and public policy. With almost two decades spent at Wheaton, the past 15 as a professor, he knew it would be hard for him to leave.

But, in recent years, Toly, an accomplished academic and public intellectual, started to get callspeople asking him to consider positions at other institutions. With this becoming a more frequent thing, a confidant of Tolys suggested that he make a short list of specific positions at specific institutions hed be willing to leave Wheaton for.

I made a very, very short list, said Toly.

The Calvin provost position was on that list.

I have always admired Calvin, said Toly. It is a university that has made room for a flourishing of life and mind across the disciplines. It is known for deep commitments to excellent teaching, outstanding scholarship, and fidelity to Reformed Christianity.

These were things that stood out to Toly from a distance. But Tolys proximity to Calvin and its faculty over the past decade would tighten. He spent a couple of weeks one summer at Calvin for a Seminars in Christian Scholarship conference, co-keynoted another conference, co-taught classes at the Au Sable Institute, and is currently a co-principal investigator on a Council for Christian Colleges and Universities grant, all alongside Calvin faculty members.

Ive had a lot of collaborators and friends at Calvin over the years. Through them, Ive had the privilege of learning not only about their work but about the good work underway across the university, said Toly.

And the closer Toly got, the more attracted he became to Calvins mission and its values.

Calvins entire mission statement is a beautiful articulation not only of what Christian educators should be doing, but what we should aspire to as Christians, what the church should aspire to, said Toly. And, especially that last part of the mission statement: live wholeheartedly as Christs agents of renewal in the world. It seems appropriately ambitious, and I think it requires faith, and hope, and lovewe need all three of the theological virtues to do this work. Faith in God who works through creation and redemption, hope in his transformative work of new creation, and love for God and for our neighbors are all required if we are to live as Christs agents of renewal in the world.

And equally as attractive to Toly is Calvin Universitys vision, which includes aspiring to become a trusted partnerto come alongside groups of all different Christian traditions, all over the world and ask how Calvin can best partner with them to promote flourishing. Aiming to become known as a trusted partner is something Toly has demonstrated a commitment to for years.

Some institutions can become turned in on themselves and exist for their own sake, said Toly, but Calvin seems to be a place that knows it exists for the church and world.

Toly points to the work happening through theCalvin Prison Initiative as one tangible example of that vision being lived out and says hes been watching that program closely at a distance for the past couple of years.

And as this vision is realized at Calvin, the search committee saw no better person to lead this effort than Toly, who has been living out the central tenets of Calvins vision during his time at Wheaton, perhaps most clearly demonstrated through his leadership in relocating the Wheaton in Chicago program to the southside neighborhood of Woodlawn, where the program has connected with community organizations and churches, developing new practices of community engagement that help students, faculty, and staff to learn from local partners.

Our center, community partners, and others at Wheaton were aligned in the hope that the move would help the college to learn and grow when it came to diversity, inclusion, justice, and unity. We prayed that God would teach us through the move, and he has been teaching us, said Toly. We moved to a neighborhood where the fresh wounds and old scars of racial injustice were as poignant and salient as they are anywhere in the country, and that has required us to learn new modes of community engagement. Weve had to adjust the pace of our work to match our community partnersmoving from decide slowly, commit late, implement quickly to decide quickly, commit early, and implement slowly. We had to become more aware of our blind spots.

One of the tangible outcomes of this work was the launching of an initiative that brought first-generation students from Woodlawn and select adjacent neighborhoods into the Wheaton in Chicago curriculum and offering co-curricular experiences for credit at no cost.

Ive had many opportunities to contribute to the work of diversity, equity, and inclusion at the college level, but my work in the Center for Urban Engagement and Urban Studies program has required consistent focus on these issues, said Toly. Semester-in, semester-out, week-in, week-outwith students, colleagues, our advisory board, and partnersit has required steady, long-term focus. Ive still got a lot to learnthis is not an issue where you arrive and youre done growingbut Im grateful for the many opportunities Ive had to learn and grow in these areas already. It is some of the most difficult work we have to do, and at the same time, some of the most rewarding and important work that we do.

For the search committee, they saw that Tolys teaching, scholarship, and community engagement demonstrated a commitment to values that are important to Calvin as it pursues its mission and vision.

Noahs breadth of experiences and vision aligns well with Calvins pursuit of its goal to be a leading global institution of Christian higher ed and to provide resources and walk alongside people from different Christian and cultural traditions, said Sinniah, who co-chaired the search committee.

Sinniah also says the search committee saw in Toly someone who is deeply committed to the Reformed faith.

Noah recognizes that central to Calvins vision is its commitments to Reformed Christianity. He frames the pursuit of all program innovations, educational experiences, and community involvements through a reformed Christian lens, said Sinniah. He will bring fresh insights and new energy to these pursuits.

Toly, who has spent more than two decades in confessionally Reformed churches says that his commitment to and appreciation for Reformed theology was a key attractional pull for him to this position.

We need the work of Jesus Christ and the Spirit to restore all of creation, but we can also acknowledge the goodness of creation, said Toly. We can affirm those good things, even while we affirm the necessity of the redemption of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.

Toly will begin his tenure as provost on July 1 and be formally installed as provost during the Fall Convocation ceremony in late August. He steps into the roleCheryl Brandsen is retiring from after faithfully serving as provost since 2014.

Those of us who serve in administrative leadership roles at Calvin respond to Gods call for a season. We entrust our work to God and have faith that God will provide the next leader to carry the mission forward, said Le Roy. Outgoing provost Cheryl Brandsen has served Calvin faithfully and commendably with the deep commitment to Calvins mission. We are grateful for her service and for her commitment to helping Noah to make a seamless transition into this leadership role at Calvin.

Toly says hes heard many great things about Brandsen and her leadership, including her commitment to fostering a community of high trust. For Toly, he aims to continue in this good work, and hopes that hell be known for gentle and faithful leadership, and for empowering others on campus.

I’m an insomniac who’s tried everything from meds to sleep sprays. This meditation app is the only thing that’ – Business Insider India

Sleep was already "the new sex" well before the pandemic, but the extra elusiveness it attained thanks to COVID-19 has people everywhere up in arms.

"Coronasomnia," as it's apparently being called, is the result of stress from the pandemic as well as scrambled and unpredictable schedules and even the effects of the virus itself, researchers say.

Over the years, I've tried all kinds of things for my sleep, ranging from prescription medication to lavender "sleep spray" to a wide range of hot teas to melatonin and everything in between.

Scientific studies have proven that meditation holds many benefits, including stress relief, improved self-esteem, increased focus and concentration, and yes, even improved sleep.

I tried it on the suggestion of a therapist whom I was consulting with at the time, and now use it at least three to four times a week.

Although it has a Premium version that goes for $9.99 per month or $59.99 per year, it's primarily a free app, which is how I use it, and says it has 90,000 titles for use online or that can be downloaded for use offline.

My therapist had informed me that the app had quite a few resources for sleep, and when I first downloaded it, I was overwhelmed.

There are currently more than 2,200 meditations for sleep, more than 2,000 music tracks intended to help you drift off, and 146 talks listed under the topic, most of which are quite literally bedtime stories.

One additional feature on the home screen that I always find interesting is this map that lets you know how many users are on the app at any given time, how many have used it today, and how many members Insight Timer has.

The word "yoga" is what initially drew me to the program, although at the time, I had no clue what "yoga nidra" meant. It turns out that "yoga nidra" is equivalent to yogic sleep, and at least as led by Piercy, it works every time.

She then asks to set an intention (or "sankalpa" in Sanskrit) for the practice.

Next comes a series of deep breathing exercises for relaxation that center on slowing down the system by viewing oneself as part of the universe.

Piercy also offers private consultations for a fee, which I haven't sampled. The bio on her free course "Your Guide To Deeper Sleep" notes that "since joining Insight Timer three years ago Jennifer's meditations have been listened to 19 million times."

As the caregiver to my elderly mom as well as mom to a teenager in the house who's doing virtual school right now, I can tell you that I've used it more than a few times when I've desperately needed an hour's rest in the afternoon - and it works just as well to give me a refreshing nap with no "hangover" when I wake up as it does to provide a full night's sleep.

‘We’ve had this in mind for some time’ – Gosden aims for another Blue Riband win – Racing Post

Uncle Bryn wins on his debut at Kempton last September

Alan Crowhurst

2.15 EpsomBlue Riband Trial (Listed) | 1m2f | 3yo | RTV

The Blue Riband Trial may have a notoriously poor record of establishing a path to Derby glory, but 2017 winner Cracksman did finish third in the Classic six weeks later.

His joint-trainer John Gosden also sent out the 2015 (Cloud Nine), 2016 (So Mi Dar) and 2018 (Crossed Baton) winners all partnered by Frankie Dettori and unbeaten Uncle Bryn gives the Clarehaven team another strong chance this year.

One of four Derby entries the othersare Too Friendly, Hector De Maris and Star Caliber Uncle Bryn is much the shortest-priced of the quartet at a general 16-1 to win Flat racings most famous race.

The son of Sea The Stars looked potentially very useful when landing all-weather events at Kempton and Wolverhampton last autumn by an aggregate of more than seven lengths.

This provides Uncle Bryns stiffest task to date, but he looks just the type to take the step up in his stride.

All bar one of the nine runners have either gone from the front or raced handily in at least one of their previous races, so a strongly runrace looks likely.

Star Caliber, who made much of the running when winning by a nose at Goodwood last September, is a well-regarded son of Golden Horn capable of significant improvement at three.

The Aidan OBrien representative, Hector De Maris, currently on offer at 66-1 for the Derby, lost his maiden certificate at the fifth time of asking in a 7f Naas nursery in November.

That was on heavy ground and the Camelot colt will face drastically different underfoot conditions this time.

Technique, the only filly in the field, is quoted at a general 80-1 for the Cazoo Oaks.

Tony Carson, trainer of BodroyIts his first run for us and hopefully he wont be disgraced, but its a big ask. Hes plenty of experience and ran a decent race to be fourth to Highland Avenue, who won the Feilden Stakes last week.

Alastair Donald, spokesman for King Power Racing, owners of Star CaliberAndrew Balding was pleased with his final piece of work last week and we feel that he could make up into a nice staying type. It looks a stronger than average renewal of the race but we are hoping for a solid run.

Hollie Doyle, rider of Surprise ExhibitHes never run anywhere as undulating as Epsom but hes done well physically over winter and Archies horses are running very well at the moment, so hopefully he can run a nice race.

Tim Gredley, joint-owner of Too FriendlyHe won nicely at Doncaster when the further he went the better. I dont know how good the race was but that warranted at a tilt at this. He wouldnt want the ground any faster than good but they do a good job with the watering at Epsom.

John Gosden, joint-trainer of Uncle BrynWe also had him in the Classic Trial at Sandown on Friday but weve had this in mind for some time. Hes still relatively inexperienced having had only the two runs on the all-weather at Kempton and then Wolverhampton, so this first run on turf will bring him on mentally. Hes been going nicely at home but still has a lot to learn.

Martyn Meade, trainer of TechniqueShe won nicely on her debut at Wolverhampton which gives her some experience of left-handed and it was either run her in a novice or pitch her in the deep end. Well roll the dice and see if she handles the track with a view to going back there.

What two pieces of unrelated pop culture are forever connected in your mind? – The A.V. Club

Much as the fresh smell of motor oil will take me back to the deeply unpleasant weeks I spent cleaning out a garage in high school, so, too, does the melodious sound of the Mission: Impossible theme immediately summon memories of that halcyon afternoon in 1996 when I received a phone call from a friend in school: Alex. I am standing in line for ID4. Get here now. He was referring, of course, to the promotional-campaign shorthand for the movie Independence Day, in that special way that only young kids who have no sense of irony or disconnect from consumer culture can really achieve. Needless to say, I felt it vital that I join him before the movie started. I had about 10 minutes to get there, so I frantically summoned my parents to start the car and drop me at the mallbut while we drove, the radio began playing the aforementioned theme. Not the original, mind you, but the Mission: Impossible Theme created by U2s Adam Clayton and Larry Mullins Jr. for the Tom Cruise film adaptation. It was a hit that summer, and thus on the radio constantly, but it still felt like kismet that it began playing as I rushed to attend the umpteenth pop-culture event of that summer that felt like a world-altering experience. It wasnt, even though that movie holds up pretty well. [Alex McLevy]

Quantum computers are revealing an unexpected new theory of reality – New Scientist

A powerful new idea about how the laws of physics work could bring breakthroughs on everything from quantum gravity to consciousness, says researcher Chiara Marletto

By Chiara Marletto

QUANTUM supremacy is a phrase that has been in the news a lot lately. Several labs worldwide have already claimed to have reached this milestone, at which computers exploiting the wondrous features of the quantum world solve a problem faster than a conventional classical computer feasibly could. Although we arent quite there yet, a general-purpose universal quantum computer seems closer than ever a revolutionary development for how we communicate and encrypt data, for virtual reality, artificial intelligence and much more.

These prospects excite me as a theoretical physicist too, but my colleagues and I are captivated by an even bigger picture. The quantum theory of computation originated as a way to deepen our understanding of quantum theory, our fundamental theory of physical reality. By applying the principles we have learned more broadly, we think we are beginning to see the outline of a radical new way to construct laws of nature.

It means abandoning the idea of physics as the science of whats actually happening, and embracing it as the science of what might or might not happen. This science of can and cant could help us tackle some of the big questions that conventional physics has tried and failed to get to grips with, from delivering an exact, unifying theory of thermodynamics and information to getting round conceptual barriers that stop us merging quantum theory with general relativity, Einsteins theory of gravity. It might go even further and help us to understand how intelligent thought works, and kick-start a technological revolution that would make quantum supremacy look modest by comparison.

Researchers Visualize the Motion of Vortices in Quantum Superfluid Turbulence – SciTechDaily

Nobel laureate in physics Richard Feynman once described turbulence as the most important unsolved problem of classical physics.

Understanding turbulence in classical fluids like water and air is difficult partly because of the challenge in identifying the vortices swirling within those fluids. Locating vortex tubes and tracking their motion could greatly simplify the modeling of turbulence.

But that challenge is easier in quantum fluids, which exist at low enough temperatures that quantum mechanics which deals with physics on the scale of atoms or subatomic particles govern their behavior.

In a new study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Florida State University researchers managed to visualize the vortex tubes in a quantum fluid, findings that could help researchers better understand turbulence in quantum fluids and beyond.

Our study is important not only because it broadens our understanding of turbulence in general, but also because it could benefit the studies of various physical systems that also involve vortex tubes, such as superconductors and even neutron stars, said Wei Guo, an associate professor of mechanical engineering at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering and the studys principal investigator.

The research team studied superfluid helium-4, a quantum fluid that exists at extremely low temperatures and can flow forever down a narrow space without apparent friction.

Guos team examined tracer particles trapped in the vortices and observed for the first time that as vortex tubes appeared, they moved in a random pattern and, on average, rapidly moved away from their starting point. The displacement of these trapped tracers appeared to increase with time much faster than that in regular molecular diffusion a process known as superdiffusion.

Analyzing what happened led them to uncover how the vortex velocities changed over time, which is important information for statistical modeling of quantum-fluid turbulence.

Superdiffusion has been observed in many systems such as the cellular transport in biological systems and the search patterns of human hunter-gatherers, Guo said. An established explanation of superdiffusion for things moving randomly is that they occasionally have exceptionally long displacements, which are known as Lvy flights.

But after analyzing their data, Guos team concluded that the superdiffusion of the tracers in their experiment was not actually caused by Lvy flights. Something else was happening.

We finally figured out that the superdiffusion we observed was caused by the relationship between the vortex velocities at different times, said Yuan Tang, a postdoctoral researcher at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and a paper author. The motion of every vortex segment initially appeared to be random, but actually, the velocity of a segment at one time was positively correlated to its velocity at the next time instance. This observation has allowed us to uncover some hidden generic statistical properties of a chaotic random vortex tangle, which could be useful in multiple branches of physics.

Unlike in classical fluids, vortex tubes in superfluid helium-4 are stable and well-defined objects.

They are essentially tiny tornadoes swirling in a chaotic storm but with extremely thin hollow cores, Tang said. You cant see them with the naked eye, not even with the strongest microscope.

To solve this, we conducted our experiments in the cryogenics lab, where we added tracer particles in helium to visualize them, added Shiran Bao, a postdoctoral researcher at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and a paper author.

The researchers injected a mixture of deuterium gas and helium gas into the cold superfluid helium. Upon injection, the deuterium gas solidified and formed tiny ice particles, which the researchers used as the tracers in the fluid.

Just like tornadoes in air can suck in nearby leaves, our tracers can also get trapped on the vortex tubes in helium when they are close to the tubes, Guo said.

This visualization technique is not new and has been used by scientists in research labs worldwide, but the breakthrough these researchers made was to develop a new algorithm that allowed them to distinguish the tracers trapped on vortices from those that were not trapped.
