SASE is coming, but adoption will be slow (especially for large enterprises) – CSO Online

The adoption of edge computing and cloud infrastructure over the past decade combined with the recent surge in remote work, have seriously challenged traditional network architectures and security models. Large enterprises have been better able to adapt to this new reality, having access to larger IT budgets and skilled employees, but small and medium-sized businesses are struggling to keep up with the access control, monitoring and threat detection technologies needed to defend their local and remote assets.

In response to this trend, security vendors, as well as cloud and networking vendors, have been launching new software-defined and cloud-delivered solutions that combine network-as-a-service with network-security-as-a-service functionality. The goal of this new concept, which Gartner has dubbed secure access service edge (SASE), is to allow companies to easily provide secure access to any of their applications, whether hosted in the cloud or locally, for any user, from any device, and from any location without relying on locally deployed security appliances through which traffic would need to be routed and inspected.

According to a recent Gartner report, interest in this new model of network security, which is built around the principles of zero-trust networking, has exploded over the past year. By 2024 the analyst firm expects that 30% of enterprises will adopt cloud-delivered secure web gateway (SWG), cloud access security broker (CASB), zero trust network access (ZTNA) and branch office firewall as a service (FWaaS) capabilities from the same vendor. By 2025, over 60% of enterprises will have explicit strategies and timelines for SASE adoption encompassing user, branch, and edge access.

An important driver for the adoption of cloud-based network security services is the reduced management complexity and cost savings because IT teams will no longer have to manage different hardware boxes from different vendors to get different security capabilities. The SASE offering of one vendor is supposed to handle multiple security functions and will be managed from the same console.

Grade II listed house with giant chess board and glorious gardens for sale in Kent – HouseBeautiful.com

A Grade II listed hall house with impressive gardens, swimming pool and its very own giant chess board is for sale in Tonbridge, Kent, for 3.5 million.

Great Budds House, which is constructed of brick with a Georgian faade, is arranged over three sprawling floors. Set in the sleepy village of Shipbourne, it's perfect for anyone longing to escape to the country.

With charming period features including an Inglenook fireplace, exposed timbers and high ceilings, the house will take your breath away. Providing versatile accommodation throughout, some of the spacious rooms inside include the extensive living room, eight bedrooms, conservatory, lovely kitchen with stone walls, four bathrooms, and the welcoming dining room, too.

Some rooms are injected with cheer, while others are pared-back and more traditional (such as the floral-infused dcor in the bedrooms). What's lovely about Great Budds House is that every room is light, spacious and unique perfect for a new family to move right in.

The garden is a pocket of peace and quiet. As well as the rather impressive chess board (balmy summer nights just got an upgrade), new owners will also get to enjoy the beautiful summerhouse, swimming pool, tennis court, shrubs and flower beds, orchards, woodland walk, and a pretty Victorian style greenhouse (a well-considered shelter for rainy days).

Set in around 14 acres of gardens and grounds, it's the ideal place for all family members to recline. Whether children are exploring the expanse lawns or adults are dining alfresco, outside spaces don't get much better than this.

But that's not all: to the west of the main house is another self-contained property, known as the Oast House. Arranged over two floors and ideal for visitors, here there is a full-sized billiard room and table, swimming pool changing room facilities and shower, sauna and a round garden room.

Tempted? Great Budds House is currently on the market for 3,500,000 with Knight Frank.

Take a tour around the home...

Can we teach Artificial Intelligence to make moral judgements? – Innovation Origins

A question that preoccupies me as a moral philosopher is to what extent artificial intelligence (AI) is capable of making moral judgments. To address that question, of course, we first need to know how humans arrive at moral judgments. Unfortunately, no consensus on that exists. Moral psychologist Jonathan Haidt argues that our moral reasoning is guided in the first place by our intuition. Reason is a slave of the passions, as philosopher David Hume stated in the 18th century.

Haidt presented test subjects with a taboo scenario about a brother and sister who have sex with each other one time only. The objections were addressed. The siblings use contraceptives (birth control pill and condom) and it happens with mutual consent. The majority intuitively disapproves of this scenario and then seek arguments to support that intuition. If respondents are given more time to think about it and are also provided with substantiated arguments, then they are more likely to be okay with it. A calm conversation and the provision of arguments can make people change their gut instincts and their judgments. When there is an open conversation with mutual understanding and affection, people are more willing to change their minds.

Machine learning and deep learning are opening up opportunities for AI to develop a kind of moral intuition by providing data and letting algorithms search for patterns in that data. The word intuition is not really the right one, because AI always concerns calculations. Like in the case study with AlphaGo, you could confront an algorithm with millions of scenarios. In this instance, about morality. Then have it play against them (as a form of self-play) and learn from mistakes. AI will find a pattern, for example about right and wrong, and can consequently develop a kind of intuition. It continues to be extremely important to look critically at how AI discovers patterns. After all, not every pattern is desirable, as AI could also develop preferences based on e.g. popularity.

But a good and convincing moral judgement goes beyond intuition. It is supported by high-quality arguments. If someone judges that a specific act is wrong, that same person must be able to substantiate why that is. Complete arbitrariness is avoided this way. It also makes it possible to gauge the extent to which the judgement is susceptible to prejudice, to name one thing. So, teaching AI to use intuition is not enough. AI will also have to learn to argue. Research has been going on in the legal domain for some time now into how AI can be used to assist lawyers in evaluating legal argumentation. In this case, it is mainly about modeling legal argumentation. In the Netherlands, philosophers are researching to what extent an argumentation machine is able to recognize fallacies. However, the research is still in its infancy.

The morally right thing to do, under any circumstances, is to do whatever has the best reasons for doing it. Giving equal weight to the interests of each individual who will be affected by what people do. Quite apart from the question of whether AI will ever be able to do this, no consensus exists on those best reasons. This certainly complicates the choice of which data we should use to train AI with. The theory, and more specifically, the definition of morality that you adhere to and subsequently train AI with, will determine the outcome. In this case, moral judgment. When you connect ethics and AI, you inevitably end up being stuck with making choices that then determine the direction of that moral judgment. In short; for now, this question remains highly speculative.

Computing to win: Addressing the policy blind spot that threatens national AI ambitions – Atlantic Council

Artificial intelligence (AI) is causing significant structural changes to global competition and economic growth. AI may generate trillions of dollars in new value over the next decade, but this value will not be easily captured or evenly distributed across nations. Much of it will depend on how governments invest in the underlying computational infrastructure that makes AI possible.

Yet early signs point to a blind spota lack of understanding, measurement, and planning. It comes in the form of compute divides that throttle innovation across academia, startups, and industry. Policymakers must make AI compute a core component of their strategic planning in order to fully realize the anticipated economic windfall.

AI compute refers to a specialized stack of hardware and software optimized for AI applications or workloads. This computer can be located and accessed in different ways (public clouds, private data centers, individual workstations, etc.) and leveraged to solve complex problems across domains from astrophysics to e-commerce and to autonomous vehicles.

Conventional information technology (IT) infrastructure is now widely available as a utility through public cloud service providers. This idea of infrastructure as a service includes computing for AI, so the public cloud is duly credited with democratizing access. At the same time, it has created a state of complacency that AI compute will be there when we need it. AI, however, is not the same as IT.

Today, when nations plan for AI, they gloss over AI compute, with policies focused almost exclusively on data and algorithms. No government leader can answer three fundamental questions: How much domestic AI compute capacity do we have? How does this compare to other nations? And do we have enough capacity to support our national AI ambitions? This lack of uniform data, definitions, and benchmarks leaves government leaders (and their scientific advisors) unequipped to formulate a comprehensive plan for AI compute investments.

Recognizing this blind spot, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) recently established a new task force to tackle the issue. Theres nothing that helps our member countries assess what [AI compute] they need and what they have, and so some of them are making large but not necessarily well-informed investments in AI compute, Karine Perset, head of the OECD AI Policy Observatory, told VentureBeat in January.

Measuring domestic AI compute capacity is a complex task compounded by a paucity of good data. While there are widely accepted standards for measuring the performance of individual AI systems, they use highly technical metrics and dont apply well to nations as a whole. There is also the nagging question of capacity versus effective use. What if a nation acquires sufficient AI compute capacity but lacks the skills and ecosystem to effectively use it? In this case, more public investment may not lead to more public benefit.

Nonetheless, more than sixty national AI strategies were formulated and published from June 2017 to December 2020. These plans average sixty-five pages and coalesce around a common set of topics including transforming legacy industries, expanding opportunities for AI education, advancing public-sector AI adoption, and promoting responsible or trustworthy AI principles. Many national plans are aspirational and not detailed enough to be operational.

In conducting a survey of forty national AI plans, and analyzing the scope and depth of content around AI compute, we found that on average national AI plans had 23,202 words while sections on AI compute averaged only 269 words. Put simply, 98.8 percent of the content of national AI strategies focuses on vision, and only 1.2 percent covers the infrastructure needed to execute this vision.

This would be the equivalent of a national transportation strategy that devotes less than 2 percent of its recommendations to roads, bridges, and highways. Just like transportation investments, AI compute capacity will be a crucial driver of the future wealth of nations. And yet, national AI plans generally exclude detailed recommendations on this topic. There are exceptions, of course. France, Norway, India, and Singapore had particularly comprehensive sections on AI infrastructure, some with detailed recommendations for AI compute requirements, performance, and system size.

Exponential growth in computational power has led to astonishing improvements in AI capabilities, but it also raises questions of inequality in compute distribution. Fairness, inclusion, and ethics are now center stage in AI policy discussionsand these apply to compute, even though it is often ignored or relegated to side workshops at major conferences. Unequal access to computational power as well as the environmental cost of training computationally complex models require greater attention.

Some of the more popular AI models are large neural networks that run on state-of-the-art machines. For example, AlphaGo Zero and GPT-3 require millions of dollars in AI compute. This has led to AI research being dominated and shaped by a few actors mostly affiliated with big tech companies or elite universities. Governments may have to step up and reduce the compute divide by developing national research clouds. Initiatives in Europe and China are underway to develop indigenous high-performance computing (HPC) technologies and related computing supply chains that reduce their dependence on foreign sources and promote technology sovereignty.

Governments in the United States, Europe, China, and Japan have been making substantial investments in the exascale race, a contest to develop supercomputers capable of one billion billion (1018) calculations per second. The rationale behind investments in HPC is that the benefits are now going beyond scientific publications and prestige, as computing capabilities become a necessary instrument for scientific discovery and innovation. The machines are the engine for economic prosperity.

Understanding compute requirements is a non-trivial measurement challenge. At a micro level, it is important to scientifically understand the relative contribution of AI compute to driving AI progress on, for example, natural-language understanding, computer vision, and drug discovery. At a macro level, nations and companies need to assess compute requirements using a data-driven approach that accounts for future industrial pathways. Wouldnt it be eye-opening to benchmark how much compute power is being used at the company or national level and to help evaluate future compute needs?

In 2019, Stanford University organized a workshop with over one hundred interdisciplinary experts to better understand opportunities and challenges related to measurement in AI policy. The participants unanimously agreed that growth in computational power is leading to measurable improvements in AI capabilities, while also raising issues of the efficiency of AI models and the inherent inequality of compute distribution. Getting measurement right will be a stepping stone to addressing this blind spot in national AI policymaking. Going forward, we recommend that governments pivot to develop a national AI compute plan with detailed sections on capacity, effectiveness, and resilience.

The completeness of a national AI strategy forecasts that nations ability to compete in the digital global economy. Few national AI strategies, however, reflect a robust understanding of domestic AI compute capacity, how to use it effectively, and how to structure it in a resilient manner. Nations need to take action by measuring and planning for the computational infrastructure needed to advance their AI ambitions. The future of their economies is at stake.

Cyber conflict has not yet escalated from a fight inside cyberspace to a more traditional armed attack because of cyberspace. In part, this is because countries understand there are some tacit upper limits to escalation above which the response from the offended country will be war. Unfortunately, this happy state may not last.

Rise of cryptocurrency: How it works, where its going – RochesterFirst

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) Cryptocurrencies are big business on Wall Street as valuations soar, but are they a form of currency for the masses?

CPA Garrett Wagner discussed the rise of these digital currencies Thursday during News 8 at Sunrise.

For many, Bitcoin is the most well-known cryptocurrency.

Bitcoin is a truly interesting technological creation, said Wagner. What makes it really interesting, if we go back to the beginning, no one knows who created it. Unlike Kodak we all know here in Rochester George Eastman was the founder of Kodak no one knows who created Blockchain and cryptocurrency. So its shrouded in mystery. But their goal was to take power away from the banks and let people like you and me exchange money without banks. So thats kind of how it got started take power away from the banks and create a global currency. Its just kind of gone from there in this big mess of confusion which is what were seeing today.

Wagner explained how cryptocurrency works.

Its very similar to the fundamental idea about you and I exchanging cash. Instead of having cash in U.S. currency, well have cash in Bitcoin or Ether or something else and well exchange that from one to another. Now thats not what gets most of the hype of cryptocurrency today. Most of the hype that we hear about is people investing in Blockchain, in Bitcoin, in Ether more like its a stock and they hope that if I buy $1,000 worth of Bitcoin today it will be worth $5,000 tomorrow. They dont want to actually conduct transactions with it. They hope that they just make a bunch of money and get out before it crashes back down.

Bitcoin has been around for more than 10 years, but Wagner said people outside investors have been slow to gravitate to it.

Were used to U.S. dollars. Were used to credit cards. Were used to ATM cards. Trying to get everybody to switch over to something else is a monumentally difficult task. So its been very, very, very slow to gain that adoption because no one wants to be the only person at a dinner party with 20 people who has Blockchain when everyone else has actual cash. So its been slow to make that change. Itll come at some point in the future, possibly, but for now, all of the speculation is about how can people get rich on this technology.
