Expert Stakeholder Consultation Report on the Indian Encryption Debate – Business Wire India

New Delhi, Delhi, India: On Tuesday, June 1, 2021, The Dialogue, a Delhi-based technology policy think tank, released its Expert Stakeholder Consultation Report on the Indian Encryption Debate. This report is based on the three expert stakeholder consultations hosted by The Dialoguefrom October 2019 to February 2021, held in partnership with NULLCON, Asias leading information security conference.

The recommendations are as follows:

Dr. Gulshan Rai, the Former National Cyber Security Coordinator, who wrote the foreword of the report noted,

There exists a legitimate state interest in seeking access to data for law enforcement purposes. The balance between privacy and national security is not bereft of technological or operational solutions. While aiming to achieve them it is crucial that none of the key stakeholders take an extremist position where we end up compromising security and privacy of Indians.

Among veterans from law enforcement agencies who participated, Mr. Yashovardhan Azad, who served as the Special Director at the Intelligence Bureau and Secretary (Security), Government of India explained,

The State may have reasons in the legitimate interest of national security to seek access to information. A blanket measure to seek access which renders the entire platform susceptible to attacks by hostile actors must not be relied on. Implementing such a measure will not only compromise user privacy but also national security. The State must assess the technical feasibility of the measures it directs the platforms to implement to effectuate exceptional access while also ensuring that the measure does not fail on the anvil of the Puttaswamy test.

Describing end-to-end encryption as a non-negotiable Dr. Aruna Sharma, Former Secretary of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology pointed out,

There is technical dichotomy between end to end encryption and that of tracing the originator for a message as the new rule states as a mandatory requirement.

Explaining the challenges around overarching mandates like backdoor access to encrypted chats for the exceptional use by the law enforcement agencies, Cyber Security Professional Mr. Anand Venkatnarayanan explained,

Most hacks and attacks are done by disabling the encryption or working around the same. In todays time, hackers understand that fooling people is far more easier than breaking encryption so they workaround the same through fake OTPs and other parallel systems to gain access to encrypted devices. If the objective of the Government is to stop these attacks, it is possible through targeted attacks and interceptions and there is no real need for a blanket policy of a backdoor that affects everyone instead of just the offender. A policy cannot be about making 99% of the population safe from the 1% by making all 100% of them unsafe

The report based on the expert stakeholder consultations seeks to shed light on the crucial aspects of the Indian encryption debate. This is even more relevant given the promulgation of the IT Rules of 2021 which may end up undermining end-to-end encryption owing to its originator traceability mandate. The experts had agreed that the way forward must be consultative keeping the privacy and security of the users in mind.

More Businesses Adopting Encryption in the Last Year – Softpedia News

As a new survey by Vanson Bourne shows, 32% of companies have seen an increase in device encryption in the past year, according to Helpnet Security.

In addition to that, 31% of companies said they now expect all data to be encrypted by default, whether at rest or in transit, and 24% require all data to be encrypted when stored on their systems or in the cloud.

Furthermore, 27% of IT decision-makers surveyed said their company has increased the use of encryption in several ways, up from zero in the 2020 study. The increase is due to companies being forced to operate in new work environments with increased remote working, requiring the implementation of new systems and controls.

According to Jon Fielding, Managing Director EMEA, Apricorn commented: The pandemic upended business operations, with vast numbers thrown into remote working. Data traffic is no longer simply moving from the confines of the corporate network, but from numerous devices and from a multitude of locations".

Encryption is increasingly recognised as a key component for data security and cyber resilience, especially at the highest levels. Examples include the use of encryption being one of very few technologies recommended within GDPR and Joe Bidens recent Executive Order, stipulating the need to adopt encryption for data at rest and in transit. If ever there were a time to increase and execute the use of encryption, this is it!

When asked to name up to three main causes of a data breach in their organization, 30% of respondents cited a lack of encryption (12%) and lost/misplaced devices containing critical corporate data (18%) as the main causes. This could be due to a lack of control over corporate data.

When asked to name up to three of the most difficult challenges associated with implementing a cybersecurity plan for remote/mobile work, 39% of respondents admitted they cannot be sure their data is adequately secured, 18% said they do not know which of their records need to be encrypted, and 15% said they have no control over where corporate data goes and when it is accessed.

Nonetheless, 77% of respondents verified that their employer has a policy in place that demands encryption of any data stored on removable media. Of those, 33% only allow the use of hardware encrypted organization-approved removable media; 18% only allow the use of organization-approved removable media that aren't hardware-encrypted but software encrypt everything written to them; 16% allow the use of all removable media devices, including employees' own USB sticks, and 10% allow the use of all removable media devices, including employees' own USB sticks.

When asked which devices their organization currently encrypts and to which they plan to expand encryption, IT decision makers surveyed indicated that their organization already encrypts some devices and plans to expand encryption to USB sticks (19%), laptops (16%), desktops (12%), mobile phones (22%), and portable hard drives (18%).

Breinify announces $11M seed to bring data science to the marketing team – TechCrunch

Breinify is a startup working to apply data science to personalization, and do it in a way that makes it accessible to nontechnical marketing employees to build more meaningful customer experiences. Today the company announced a funding round totaling $11 million.

The investment was led by Gutbrain Ventures and PBJ Capital with participation from Streamlined Ventures, CXO Fund, Amino Capital, Startup Capital Ventures and Sterling Road.

Breinify co-founder and CEO Diane Keng says that she and co-founder and CTO Philipp Meisen started the company to bring predictive personalization based on data science to marketers with the goal of helping them improve a customers experience by personalizing messages tailored to individual tastes.

Were big believers that the world, especially consumer brands, really need strong predictive personalization. But when you think about consumer big brands or the retailers that you buy from, most of them arent data scientists, nor do they really know how to activate [machine learning] at scale, Keng told TechCrunch.

She says that she wanted to make this type of technology more accessible by hiding the complexity behind the algorithms powering the platform. Instead of telling you how powerful the algorithms are, we show you [what that means for the] consumer experience, and in the end what that means for both the consumer and you as a marketer individually, she said.

That involves the kind of customizations you might expect around website messaging, emails, texts or whatever channel a marketer might be using to communicate with the buyer. So the AI decides you should be shown these products, this offer, this specific promotion at this time, [whether its] the web, email or SMS. So youre not getting the same content across different channels, and we do all that automatically for you, and thats [driven by the algorithms], she said.

Breinify launched in 2016 and participated in the TechCrunch Disrupt Startup Battlefield competition in San Francisco that year. She said it was early days for the company, but it helped them focus their approach. I think it gave us a huge stage presence. It gave us a chance to test out the idea just to see where the market was in regards to needing a solution like this. We definitely learned a lot. I think it showed us that people were interested in personalization, she said. And although the company didnt win the competition, it ended up walking away with a funding deal.

Today the startup is growing fast and has 24 employees, up from 10 last year. Keng, who is an Asian woman, places a high premium on diversity.

We partner with about four different kinds of diversity groups right now to source candidates, but at the end of the day, I think if you are someone thats eager to learn, and you might not have all the skills yet, and youre [part of an under-represented] group we encourage everyone to apply as much as possible. We put a lot of work into trying to create a really well-rounded group, she said.

Pyodide Brings Python and Its Scientific Stack to the Browser with WebAssembly – InfoQ.com

Mozilla announced that Pyodide, a project aiming at providing a full Python data science stack running entirely in the browser, has become an independent community-driven project. Pyodide leverages the CPython 3.8 interpreter compiled to WebAssembly, and thus allows using Python, NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, SciPy, and more in Iodide, an experimental interactive scientific computing environment for the web.

The Pyodide team originally explained the rationale behind Pyodide as follows:

When we started thinking about making the web better for scientists, we focused on ways that we could make working with Javascript better, like compiling existing scientific libraries to WebAssembly and wrapping them in easy-to-use JS APIs. [] Mozillas WebAssembly wizards offered a more ambitious idea: if many scientists prefer Python, meet them where they are by compiling the Python science stack to run in WebAssembly.

The Iodide playground showcases a notebook that uses Python and Python packages in a JavaScript environment and vice versa:

Pyodide may be used in any context where it is necessary to run Python inside a web browser with full access to the Web APIs. The latest release note states that Pyodide converted the Python 3.8 runtime to WebAssembly, along with the Python scientific stack including NumPy (scientific computing), Pandas (data analysis), Matplotlib (plotting library), SciPy (scientific and technical computing), and scikit-learn (machine learning). 75 packages are available at the time of the release. Pure Python wheels may also be installed from the PyPi Python package manager. Python 0.17 additionally provides transparent conversion of objects between JavaScript and Python.

Iodide was created in 2018 to create in-browser notebooks for scientific exploration and visualization in a similar vein to Jupyter:

Iodide is no longer actively maintained. Pyodide can however be used in other interactive client-side notebook environments (e.g., Starboard, Basthon, JupyterLite).

The full release note and announcement are available online and contain plenty of additional illustrations and explanations. Pyodide is now an independent and community-driven open-source project distributed under the Mozilla Public License Version 2.0.

Ethnically Diverse Research Identifies More Genetic Markers of Type 2 Diabetes-related Traits – UMass News and Media Relations

AMHERST, Mass. By ensuring ethnic diversity in a largescale genetic study, an international team of researchers, including a University of Massachusetts Amherst genetic epidemiologist, has identified more regions of the genome linked to type 2 diabetes-related traits.

The findings, published May 31 in Nature Genetics, broaden the understanding of the biological basis of type 2 diabetes and demonstrate that expanding research into different ancestries yields better results. Ultimately the goal is to improve patient care worldwide by identifying genetic targets to treat the chronic metabolic disorder. Type 2 diabetes affects and sometimes debilitates more than 460 million adults worldwide, according to the International Diabetes Federation. About 1.5 million deaths were directly caused by diabetes in 2019, the World Health Organization reports.

Cassandra Spracklen, assistant professor of biostatistics and epidemiology in the UMass Amherst School of Public Health and Health Sciences, is part of the international MAGIC collaboration. That group of more than 400 global academics conducted the genome-wide association meta-analysis, led by the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom.

Our findings matter because were moving toward using genetic scores to weigh up a persons risk of diabetes, says Spracklen, one of the papers lead authors.

Up to now, some 88% of genomic research of this type has been conducted in white European-ancestry populations. We know that scores developed exclusively in individuals of one ancestry dont work well in people of a different ancestry, Spracklen adds.

The team analyzed data across a wide range of cohorts, encompassing more than 280,000 people without diabetes. Researchers looked at glycemic traits, which are used to diagnose diabetes and monitor sugar and insulin levels in the blood.

The researchers incorporated 30 percent of the overall cohort with individuals of East Asian, Hispanic, African-American, South Asian and sub-Saharan African origin. By doing so, they discovered 24 more loci or regions of the genome linked to glycemic traits than if they had conducted the research in Europeans alone.

Type 2 diabetes is an increasingly huge global health challenge with most of the biggest increases occurring outside of Europe, says Ins Barroso, professor of diabetes at the University of Exeter, who led the research. While there are a lot of shared genetic factors between different countries and cultures, our research tells us that they do differ in ways that we need to understand. Its critical to ensuring we can deliver a precision diabetes medicine approach that optimizes treatment and care for everyone.

First author Ji Chen, a data science expert at the University of Exeter, adds: Beyond the moral arguments for ensuring research is reflective of global populations, our work demonstrates that this approach generates better results.

Though some loci were not detected in all ancestries, the team found it is useful to capture information about the glycemic trait in individual ancestries.

This is important as increasingly healthcare is moving toward a more precise approach, Spracklen says. Failing to account for genetic variation according to ancestry will impact our ability to accurately diagnose diabetes.

Making AI Sing: An Interview With Verphoria On The Use Of Artificial Intelligence Within The Music Industry – Forbes

Verphoria, Founder and CEO of Hierarchy Music

In todays music industry, the separation between digital and analogue is almost impossible to determine. At the most basic level, the majority of todays music is crafted using highly intelligent software. However, at the cutting edge of AI and the music industry, innovators are continuously pushing the boundaries of human/machine collaboration in musical creation as well as business.

One such innovator is Vernica Serjilus, professionally as Verphoria, an American singer, record producer, songwriter, entrepreneur, and the Founder and CEO of Hierarchy Music. Hierarchy Music is a global music company that connects musicians globally with Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum music services.

At the crux of Hierarchy Musics operations is data AI and back-end exposure which allow us to bring exposure to new artists, or existing artists and their brands, utilizing both Hierarchy Music and Hierarchy Medias back-end network.

I spoke with Verphoria about her background as a musician as well as her perspective on the future of AI in music.

How did you get your start in the music industry?

I started singing at the age of four and started record producing at the age of 10.

At the age of 19 I was discovered by Aton Ben Horin and Ethan Curtis, the co-owners of the Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum Plush Recording Studios. At the age of 22, I was invited to record at Paramount Recording Studio and Neighborhood Watche by renowned engineer/mixer Andrew Drew Chavez where I continued to sharpen my skills in music.

My brand Verphoria gained popularity on Instagram and other social media platforms for Music which lead to making appearances at a number of red carpet events, such as those hosted by Maxim Magazine and Sports Illustrated. I gained the attention of Celebrity Director Chris Applebaum (who directed Rihannas Umbrella, Britney Spears, Kim Kardashian, Usher, Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, and Paris Hilton) who will be directing my music videos.

Who are your musical influences?

The biggest influences in my life are Michael Jackson, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Shakira, Wolfgang Mozart, and Beyonc.

Do you use data and AI in your music or in your broader career?

To create my compositions, I use a digital audio workstation (DAW, an electronic device or application software used for recording, editing and producing audio files) called Ableton Live which uses the AI plugin called Magenta Studio that allows me to experiment with open source machine learning tools.

This AI grants me the ability to create learning models for musical melodies, patterns, and rhythms by using a mathematical model.

Verphoria, Founder and CEO of Hierarchy Music

What are your thoughts on the recent quote from artist Grimes in which she states, Once theres actually AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), theyre gonna be so much better at making art than us.

I am going to disagree with that statement. AGI can be used to speed up the production of music, however, it cannot replace the emotion that comes from music produced by a human, nor can it recapitulate and evoke the emotional connection that musicians possess in the creation of their musical compositions.

Making good art is much more than following an algorithm, its the emotional aspect that makes it touch people.

How do you think AI and data are shaping the industry as a whole?

AI will definitely become a bigger and bigger part of the music industry as it will in every other industry. It is not yet perfect, and it may not ever be perfect on its own, but the use of AI helps to streamline many of the more laborious processes in music production.

Whether this is a good or bad thing is up for debate.

In my personal opinion it is best used as a collaboration tool, not something to make a whole record without the touch of a human. This article brings up a lot of interesting questions and concerns that we will have to deal with in the near future. Now is an exciting time to be in the music industry as we grapple with these problems.

How has data and AI helped you build your career?

AI and backend exposure has been instrumental in growing my personal brand Verphoria. Hierarchy Music and Hierarchy Medias data AI helped to grow my audience significantly by connecting my existing network to different network niches.

This helped in two main ways: it increased my exposure and helped me understand my audiences behavior.

The data gleaned from this process was invaluable in growing my brand relatively quickly compared to traditional methods.

What are issues in the music industry you think technology could help solve?

I believe a cloud-based DAW should be created so the music records being produced can be continuously saved and not lost if the computer or hard drive is stolen with unlimited amounts of data that can be stored.

How has technology made the business of being a musician easier? How has it made it more difficult?

The best thing about technology is that it has made becoming a musician more accessible to average people. With enough drive and the will to learn anyone can become a world-class musician. It has also made the technical aspects of making music easier. For example, we can make sure every note, melody, or rhythm is pitched and quantized correctly so there are no mistakes or flaws in the notes.

As for how it has made things more difficult? That is harder for me to answer.

Technology has been constantly evolving throughout my life, so to me it is second nature and is definitely not a problem, but for those people not as comfortable with the ever-changing nature of tech that can pose some difficulties.
