Winston Marshall says Mumford & Sons were targeted by internet mobs amid tweet controversy – NME.com

Winston Marshall has claimed that Mumford & Sons were targeted by internet mobs amid the Twitter storm that led to his departure from the band.

The banjoistfaced backlash back in Marchafter tweeting praise for a book by US journalist Andy Ngo, titledUnmasked: Inside Antifas Radical Plan To Destroy Democracy. He said the release was important, hailing Ngo as a brave man in a since-deleted post.

Marshall subsequently confirmed that he would be taking a break from the group, and announced in a statement last week (June 24) that hed stepped down from his role for good.

I know now that, as long as I am a member of the band, speaking my mind on the evils of political extremism could bring them trouble, he said. My loyalty and love for them cannot permit that.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4s Today showearlier today (June 29), Marshall said that his former bandmates had been subjected to internet mobs while he received a lot of very horrible negativity over his endorsement of Ngo.

What was sort of unpleasant about it is that they went for my bandmates, they went for my friends, and thats not fair on them because its got nothing to do with them, he explained.

But in the public eye we were a unit and thats, I suppose, what these internet mobs do. They go for all those people around you and thats, I think, what was so troubling for me about the experience, was to see my friends getting dragged under the bus with me, which is not fair on them.

Marshall said most of the criticism he received online was nonsense and lies, adding that Mumford & Sons were so sweet and stood by me and invited me to continue.

Theyve been perfectly honourable throughout and Im very grateful for that, he continued. I still, sort of, obviously regret that this situation even came about and, with hindsight, it was a foolish tweet to have made.

Elsewhere in his initial departing statement, Marshall looked back on the highlights of the time he spent with the band. From odysseys through the Scottish Islands to headlining Glastonbury, from The Betsy Trotwood to Madison Square Garden. Weve done it all, he said.

What a blessing it was to be so close to such talent as those three lads. I will look back at it all with immense pride and love. However, after much reflection and consideration, I have decided it is time to move on.

Commenting on Marshalls departure in an Instagram post, the group said they wished him all the best.

Back in 2018,Mumford & Sons also respondedafter they faced criticism over a photothat saw several members posing with controversial academic Jordan Peterson.

Does the world need more people? Not if you ask the glaciers, the rain forests, the air, or the more than 37,400 species on the verge of extinction thanks to the relentless expansion of human beings into every corner and cranny of our overheated planet. There are now 7.9 billion of us, and growing50 years ago there were fewer than half as many. Id say weve more than fulfilled the biblical injunction to be fruitful and multiply.

In spite of all the signs indicating that slowing population growth would be a good idea, the worlds most populous country is aiming for the opposite. In May, the Chinese government relaxed its two-child quota; now couples can have three. Chinas population is getting old: The median age has risen from 24.9 in 1990 to 38.4 today. Who will care for the old folks? Who will pay into the social welfare system to support retirees? It doesnt help that the one-child policy, in operation from 1980 to 2016, encouraged the killing and abandonment of girl babies and the forced abortion of female fetuses, leading to a huge surplus of men, many of whom will never find women with whom to raise a family. The most recent statistics are not encouraging: In 2018, among youngsters 10 to 19 years old, there were about 120 boys per 100 girls. China is not alone. Indias statistics are similar, and a growing gender imbalance due to sex-selective abortion and other factors exists in many other countries, from Armenia to Vietnam.

Still, an extreme preference for sons combined with a preference for small families is only one reason the birth rate has fallen in the past few decades all over the world, except in sub-Saharan Africa. The improved status of women is also crucial. For most of recorded history, after all, most women were kept uneducated, married off as teenagers, and allowed no rights and few choices. They were little more than breeding stock and cheap labor for their husbands families. Their only hope for social power and respectability lay in producing legitimate children, preferably male, who lived to adulthood. This was called natures way.

Modern birth control allows women to have fewer children, which women almost everywhere prefer, while modern medicine and sanitation mean more people live into old age. In theory, women could nevertheless decide to have three, four, or more kids. Conservatives, and some leftists too, maintain that this is their true desireor would be, were they not so selfish. On the right, patriarchal self-help guru Jordan Peterson claims feminism deludes women into careerism instead of motherhood, citing the Virgin Mary as a model for all; on the left, Jacobins Connor Kilpatrick hymns the praises of East Germany and argues that womens desire for children is thwarted by liberalism, handmaid of capitalism.

But everything in modern urban life works against big families; even Mormons have smaller families nowadays. Not only do modern economies, higher education, and urban living enable womens independence, giving them all kinds of ideas, but modern economies also require a large class of educated people. The days of producing children to be your farmhands are over, but raising an educated child is expensive and time-intensive. Modern economies also depend on consumption, which just about everyone (officially) frowns upon but ultimately means encouraging people to enjoy life, expect material comfort, cultivate interests, and seek new experiences.

The New York Times Ross Douthat thinks people should have one more child than they think they want, even if it would make their lives more difficult and painful. But hes a devout Catholic; for him, suffering and self-denial are virtues. I dont think theres much chance of that catching on: The logistics are just too difficult. Moreover, many modern economies do a poor job of producing the kinds of material and social goods that would make having more than one or two kids feasible: decent affordable housing, excellent day care and schools, flexible schedules for parents, quality health care, and so on. But even societies with generous social provisions have not managed to produce bumper crops of babies. Swedens fertility rate is 1.85 children per woman, barely higher than that of the United States at 1.78. Government can only do so much. Within the traditional nuclear family, the work of domesticity and parenthood is still placed squarely on womens shoulders; as Covid showed us, when push comes to shove, shes the one making the sacrifices.

Isnt it funny how population issues always come down to women? First they had too many children; now they are having too few. If only menCatholic priests, for examplecould have babies, Im sure theyd do a much better job of it. Not only are women not having enough kids, the women who population boosters think should be doing it most are having the fewest. In the West, the comparatively low birth rate of white educated middle-class women was already of concern to Teddy Roosevelt at the turn of the century. The perceived need for population growth comes up against not only the lives of modern women but also xenophobia and racism. It may just be that countries will have to open their arms to the rest of the world whether they like it or not. Japan, historically unwelcoming to foreigners, has a median age of 48. Maybe instead of forcibly sterilizing Uighur women, China should be rewarding them and welcoming their babies.

Maybe the problem is less that there are too few kids than that there are more kids than adults can take care of, some in war zones and refugee camps and slums. Millions of poor children are essentially thrown away, along with their mothers, by their societiesilliterate or barely literate, with zero prospects, suffering from all kinds of illness and trauma, and doomed to the lowest kind of work, if any. Imagine if they were seen as demographic treasures to be nurtured and cherished, and raised to live happy, useful lives.

The world population is still rising, but demographic decline probably cant be reversed. In some ways, thats sadchildren bring joy and hope and purpose to life. Young people bring new ideas and energy. But from the point of view of the planet, its a good thing. And probably from the point of view of women and children, too.

HSE secures orders to get details of those who downloaded cyber attack information – TheJournal.ie

THE HIGH COURT has ordered that the HSE be provided with details of people who uploaded and downloaded confidential material taken in the recent cyber attack onto a internet securitys firms web-service.

The orders were secured against Chronicle Security Ireland Ltd and its US-based parent Chronicle LLC, in respect of material downloaded onto its malware analysis service VirusTotal. Both companies are owned by Google.

The order was made today by Mr Justice Senan Allen. The judge said he was satisfied from the evidence put before the court to grant the orders sought by the HSE.

The judge noted that was no opposition from the defendants to the making of order, which is known as a Norwich Pharmacal order.

The order requires the defendants to provide information about subscribers who uploaded or downloaded the material onto VirusTotal which is a service designed to screen documents to ensure they are virus-free.

The information includes subscriber details including email addresses, phone numbers, IP addresses or physical addresses.

Through their lawyers Chronicle said they were neither opposing nor objecting to the making of the order sought by the HSE.

Chronicle said while it wanted to assist the HSE as much as they can. For data protection reasons it could not hand over any subscriber details in the absence of a court order.

Seeking the order, Jonathan Newman SC, with Michael Binchy BL for the HSE, submitted that the orders sought could be made.

Such orders counsel said should be made sparingly, but in this instance, there has been a clear breach of the HSEs confidentiality and rights.

Previously the High Court heard that sometime in May approximately 27 files stolen from the HSE were downloaded onto VirusTotal.

The material included sensitive patient information including correspondence, minutes of meetings, and corporate documents, the HSE claims.

That material was downloaded 23 times by VirusTotal subscribers before it was removed by Chronicle on 25 May.

In a sworn statement to the court, the HSEs National Director for Operation Performance and Integration Joe Ryan said it became aware of an article published by the Financial Times last month, which referred to some stolen data, and a link used to access the stolen data online.

The HSE sought the return of the data referred to in the article and an explanation as to the location of the link referred to in the article.

Ryan said the FT indicated it had obtained the stolen data from a confidential source which it refused to reveal.

Following the cyber attack, the HSE obtained a High Court order on 20 May that restraining any sharing, processing, selling or publishing of data stolen from its computer systems.

When the FT received a copy of the order the HSE obtained on 20 May it handed over the information obtained from the source to the HSEs cyber security advisors, Ryan said.

Ryan said that following an analysis of the material received from the FT it was discovered that the stolen documents were uploaded on VirusTotal

After contacting the defendants, Ryan said the stolen material was deleted from the VirusTotal platform.

IISS analysts compiled a country ranking that assesses their digital capabilities. They considered the strength of their digital economies and the health of the cybersecurity sector. In their analysis, it was found that the United States is the country with the highest level of digital power. China, Russia, Great Britain, Australia, Canada, France and Israel came second. The third level includes: India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, North Korea, Iran and Vietnam.

Why is China only ranked second in digital power? Experts from the International Institute for Strategic Studies believe that the media has focused too much on Chinas success in building a digital economy in recent years and on cyber attacks by Chinese hackers. However, they have not paid enough attention to the weaknesses of Chinas infrastructure. According to IISS, China mainly focuses on monitoring content on the Internet and neglects Internet security itself. Chinese digital intelligence analysis is less mature than the so-called Five Eyes Alliance (USA, Great Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand), because it is based on ideology and increasingly linked to the goals of Communist Party leaders says Greg Austin, an expert at the International Institute for Studies The strategy.

IISS analysts estimate that, at least until 2030, the United States will remain the dominant power on the Internet, and China will not be able to bridge the digital capabilities gap by then. They also noted that smaller economies such as Israel and Australia have been able to build their strength in cyberspace in recent years, while countries such as Japan have neglected the issue.

Crdit Agricole CIB partners with Pasqal and Multiverse Computing – IBS Intelligence

Crdit Agricole CIB with European tech Pasqal and Multiverse Computing announced a partnership to design and implement new approaches running on classical and quantum computers to outperform state of the art algorithms for capital markets and risk management.

International companies and institutions have started investing heavily in quantum technologies. Europe launched the Quantum Flagship Plan in October 2018, and France recently announced a 1.8 billion investment plan.

Quantum computing is likely to profoundly impact multiple industries in the coming years, including finance. Finance has been making substantial use of algorithms requiring advanced mathematics and statistics so far; it is the turn of quantum physics to help solve quantitative financial problems. In addition, quantum theory and technology, assembled in Quantum Computing, start demonstrating promising applications in capital markets and risk management.

Crdit Agricole CIB has teamed up with two quantum technology companies to apply quantum computing to real-world finance applications. French company Pasqal is developing a quantum computer based on neutral atoms arrays, currently being trialled to build industrial quantum computers. Spanish company Multiverse Computing specialises in quantum algorithms which can run both on quantum and classical computers.
