InMotion Hosting vs DreamHost: Pick the best web hosting for your business – TechRadar

These days, a website is just as important as setting up a physical shop, especially if you want your business to extend its reach to other countries. If you dont want to make the same mistake most business owners make, ensuring that your businesss extension, i.e., your website, has high quality needs to be prioritized.

For one, your website needs to be available and accessible at all times, otherwise potential customers will show themselves out and shop elsewhere. To make this happen, you need a reliable web hosting provider for your site. In this article, well provide a head to head comparison of two of the most notable web hosting providers today: InMotion Hosting and DreamHost, to help you go with the perfect choice for your website.

Both InMotion Hosting and DreamHost are based in Los Angeles, California and have been around for quite some time. Both also have a track record in excellent customer support and server uptime, and offer unlimited bandwidth and data storage. Both also hold the top spots in the most affordable web hosting plans in the market.

Whereas DreamHosts shared hosting plans offer unlimited storage, InMotion Hosting only gives out 10GB. Support-wise, InMotions phone support is the key difference, as DreamHost does not offer this. Inmotion also uses cPanel, a widely-used intuitive interface, while DreamHost has a user-friendly built-in control panel thats also beginner-friendly.

DreamHosts entry level aptly named Shared Starter plan goes for as low as $2.59 per month paid annually. This plan hosts a website with a free domain, unlimited traffic, pre-installed WordPress, free migration, access to the WordPress builder, and a lot more. Their next plan, Shared Unlimited, has all of the previously mentioned features plus more, offered for only $3.95 per month billed annually.

InMotion has four plans, Lite, Launch, Power and Pro. The lowest tier goes for $2.49 per month and their next plan, which is a little higher than DreamHosts, is $4.99 per month. A little bit steeper, but this does include hosting for two websites, 50GB of SSD storage, 10 email addresses, unlimited bandwidth, and more. Oddly, their third highest tier, Power, goes for the same amount but offers just a bit more features including 50 instead of two websites, 100GB instead of 50GB storage, etc. Inmotions highest tier package is $12.99 per month.

While users get a WordPress website builder across all of DreamHost and InMotions plans, there are notable differences in most features these platforms are offering.

DreamHost takes security seriously with features that include a tool called Malware Remover, free and open SSL/TLS certificates that encrypt data, free domain privacy, http/2 support, and mod_security, an industry-standard web application firewall.

InMotion, on the other hand, doesnt fall behind in the level of security they offer. Users can download the Sucuri Security plugin for free and scan for malware and other security risks. Inmotion also offers IP Deny Manager, password-protected directories, and Hotlink protection to combat the common hacking attacks today.

As an added security feature, users will find automatic backups to be extremely helpful, and while DreamHost offers this for free, InMotion has an extra fee for this.

DreamHost offers various types of hosting plans, and all of these plans run on the operating system called Ubuntu. For users who arent expecting heavy traffic on their site, the basic shared hosting plan can easily provide users with their website needs. For larger traffic expectations, the VPS, dedicated or DreamPress (WordPress) plans are the options available. Dreamhost also offers cloud hosting where users are able to design their server without limits so that they can meet their needs.

InMotion, on the other hand, has reseller hosting and bare metal hosting on top of VPS, dedicated, cloud and WordPress hosting. InMotions shared hosting is known to be cost-effective, reliable and fast, especially for small businesses and large resellers alike. The reseller hosting plan includes free domain reseller, free white label branding and messaging, and a free billing software. Inmotion going an extra mile makes it a better choice for small businesses.

At best, DreamHost competes well performance-wise, and users do get a bang for the buck with their cheap plans. DreamHosts average page speed of 445ms is a remarkable speed for any sites SEO performance. There is also a 100% uptime guarantee offer where users are compensated their current hosting cost for one day of service for each hour of interruption, or 10% of their next pre-paid hosting renewal fee.

Serving over 170,000 customers, InMotion has also made a name as a fast and reliable web hosting provider. InMotion offers an uptime reliability of 99.9%, which is just as good as DreamHosts guarantee. Their server response time is also just as competitive as DreamHost, which has a record of 63ms.

Both DreamHost and InMotion offer more flexibility and reliability in their services and plans, and theres not much of a difference in their performance, although there are reports of DreamHost being just a little bit slower in terms of website loading speed. InMotion Hosting does, on the other hand, pass tests with flying colors every time.

Dreamhost and InMotion plans all include a free SSL certificate. The difference lies in the backups and domain privacy (as mentioned above). Where DreamHost is generous with free domain privacy, which ensures the protection of the users personal information, and daily backups, these features come with extra fees with InMotion.

DreamHosts additional free security features include Modsecurity that blocks malicious HTTP requests and SQL attacks and http/2 support. InMotion uses an anti-DDoS system called Corero to block attacks, and their servers use Smartwall Threat Defense System, an in-house system that makes sure users feel protected.

Beginners in website building need to have help available anytime. Both InMotion and DreamHost are excellent in customer support, with a knowledge base that provides video tutorials, forums, and articles about hosting problems users might encounter. This is especially useful during times when phone or live chat reps are unavailable to address pressing matters.

InMotions customer support channels include live agents via chat, a ticketing system, and phone support. Users can get a hold of a rep 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help solve hosting issues. Although available, there might be a 2-minute wait to get a hold of someone, but even if it takes longer, the high quality support received is well worth the wait.

DreamHost also has a ticketing system and live chat support, but lacks phone support. For users who prefer to have someone walk them through solving an issue via a phone call, this can prove challenging. Additionally, DreamHosts live chat channel isnt available 24/7 like InMotions is, and the wait time usually takes up to five minutes.

It is a close fight between these two web hosting providers. Although DreamHost outperforms InMotion uptime and speed-wise, InMotion offers a little more extra with their free site migration, free backups and domain privacy, and better customer support feedback. DreamHosts comprehensive plan prices seem to make up for this, and for the fact that the basic tier only includes basic features.

Though slightly more expensive than DreamHost, InMotions better services, additional features and outperforming DreamHost overall makes it a smart choice. For inexperienced users who prefer help every step of the way and are willing to pay a little extra for a few more options, InMotion is a great choice. On the other hand, users who know what they want and what theyre looking for on a website, DreamHost is not at all a bad choice.

Zoom to buy cloud-based call center operator Five9 in $15 bln deal – Reuters

July 19 (Reuters) - Zoom Video Communications Inc (ZM.O) struck a $14.7 billion all-stock deal to buy cloud-based call center operator Five9 Inc (FIVN.O) in its largest-ever acquisition, as it looks to expand beyond its core video-conferencing services.

Zoom has become a household name and investor favorite in the year since the coronavirus pandemic, as businesses and schools adopted its services to hold virtual classes, office meets and socialize.

But with rapid vaccination and life creeping back to normality, analysts and investors are looking to see how Zoom will sustain its hot streak of growth, especially with rivals Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O), Cisco Systems Inc (CSCO.O) and Alphabet Inc's (GOOGL.O) Google snapping at its heels.

Five9, whose call center software is used by more than 2,000 clients across the globe to interact with their clients, counts firms such as Under Armour (UAA.N), Lululemon Athletica Inc (LULU.O) and Olympus Corp (7733.T) as customers.

The deal makes strategic sense, as it helps accelerate Zoom's product roadmap outside of its core offering, Barclays analyst Raimo Lenschow wrote in a note.

The San Jose, California-based company is now shifting focus to its two-year-old cloud-calling product Zoom Phone and conference-hosting product Zoom Rooms as bigger players amp up their video products.

"The acquisition is expected to help enhance Zoom's presence with enterprise customers and allow it to accelerate its long-term growth opportunity by adding the $24-billion contact center market," Zoom said in a statement on Sunday.

Under the terms of the deal, approved by the boards of both companies, Five9 stockholders will receive 0.5533 shares of Zoom stock for each share of Five9.

Based on Zoom's Friday close, this represents a price of $200.28 for each share of Five9 common stock, or nearly a 13% premium.

Zoom shares, which have surged more than 450% since going public in 2019, were down 1.5% on Monday. Five9 shares were up 6% at $188.5.

Five9 will become an operating unit of Zoom and its chief executive, Rowan Trollope, will become a president of the company, staying on as chief of the unit after the deal, which is expected to close in the first half of 2022, it said.

Global spending on cloud-based conferencing is forecast to reach $5.41 billion this year, up from $5.02 billion in 2020, according to tech consultancy Gartner. It does not track market share, but analysts cite Zoom and Cisco as the leaders.

Goldman Sachs advised Zoom and Qatalyst Partners advised Five9.

Pfizer saved millions by shifting cold data into the cloud. Could you do the same? – The Register

Promo IT directors face two major headaches with historic data. They know that they could free up valuable, on-prem, high-performance storage by migrating cold data into the cloud. But they also worry this could cause access problems should some of it could become hot again in the future.

When the company is pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, the issue of right-placing aging, cold data is not just a data hygiene challenge, but one that could affect the health of millions.

Pfizer set out to analyze the petabytes of unstructured files it had on high-performance, on-premises storage to identify what could be moved to the cloud and migrate it there. But Pfizers IT leaders needed to do this without compromising how users and applications access the data nor affecting the performance of its existing storage infrastructure.

You can find out how they did it by joining this upcoming webinar, courtesy of storage management specialists Komprise and AWS, on July 22 at 1000 PDT (1300 EDT, 1800 BST). Register now.

Youll hear from Pfizers director of hosting data services, Matthew Braunstein; Komprises global strategic alliance leader Caitlyn Possehl; and AWS senior partner solution architect for storage, Anthony Fiore.

Together, theyll explain how Komprise helped Pfizer turn the tide on 20 years of increasing storage costs. The strategy included tiering colder data to AWS, while keeping it instantly available for research, without changing how users and applications access their files. The webinar will review:

Whether youre an IT practitioner needing continued access to cold data, a CIO looking to balance the needs of your in-house researchers and your finance department, or a CISO looking to ensure that your data reserves are safe, you should join this discussion and demonstration of Komprise Intelligent Data Management.

Just head to the registration page, drop in your details, and join us on the day. Your data migration starts here.

A lot of websites are down – Business Insider

Users are reporting issues with websites including Airbnb, Fidelity, FedEx, and more.

Downdetector, a site that reports website-user issues, reported numerous sites had experienced outages beginning around 12 p.m. ET on Thursday.

Akamai, a cloud-services company, said in a statement around noon that it is investigating an emerging issue with the Edge DNS service. Nearly an hour later, Akamai said the firm had implemented a fix for this issue and that services on Edge DNS were resuming normal operations.

Oracle said around 12:30 p.m. that the company is monitoring a global issue "related to Akamai edge DNS" that's affecting internet resources including Oracle cloud properties. A representative for Fastly, another web hosting service, told Insider that its platforms did not observe any outages.

"Resources within the Oracle cloud are continuing to run and are not impacted by this event," Oracle said.

Charles Schwab tweeted at 12:39 p.m. that some clients might have difficulty logging in to the company website. Charles Schwab added it was working to resolve the issue and that users could log in to the mobile app in the meantime.

A Delta Airlines spokesperson told Insider the global outage briefly impacted Delta.com and the Fly Delta app, but the company did not record any operational impact.

A Southwest Airlines representative told Insider the main website is not having difficulties, but the investor-relations site managed by a third party could be.

This is a developing story. Check insider.com for updates.

Govt forced to release overdue COVIDSafe report – iTnews

The federal government has been forced to release a heavily redacted version of a report evaluating the effectiveness of its COVIDSafe contact tracing app after failing to produce the report itself.

But the document covering the first six months of the app's operation is of little value, with swathes of information relating to its usefulness during the first stage of the pandemic removed.

The independent report, released following a freedom of information request by the Canberra Times, comes almost 18 months after the app was introducedand 12 months after the reporting period.

Under legislation governing COVIDSafe, the Department of Health is required to report on the operation and effectiveness of the app and the national COVIDSafe data store every six months.

Following completion of the report, the Privacy Amendment (Public Health Contact Inforamtion) Act 2020 then requires that the report be handed down in parliament within 15 sitting days.

Despite this requirement, the government has not publicly released the first six-monthly report.

Documents released under FOI show the department engaged global consulting and research firm Abt Associates and its technology partner, Brisbane-based systems integratorBdna, to evaluate COVIDSafe from September 2020.

The resulting draft report, which cost almost $234,000 and covered the period between16 May 2020 to 15 November 2020, was received by the department in early December 2020, according to a ministerial information brief released alongside the report.

The external assessors sought to assess the efficiency, including cost of the app against other comparable apps like Singapore's TraceTogether app, as well as appropriateness such as the design and uptake and implementation.

A mixed-methods approach was used drawing on public health evaluation and technology review methodology to examine available evidence on the appropriateness, effectiveness and efficiency of COVIDSafe, the report states.

Our evaluation focuses on three states, NSW, Victoria and Queensland, chosen in consultation with the [department] as the states with the highest number of Covid-19 cases in the country and with PHUs [public health units] who most use the datastore.

But while the report released under FOI notes the effectiveness of the app is predicated on its ability to identify individuals, almost all information relating tothe apps effectiveness has been redacted.

Most remaining information included is either public or highlights positive aspects of COVIDSafe such as the government's commendableachievement developing a new digital contact tracing tool, for a new virus in a matter of weeks.

The redacted report makes not mention of the fact COVIDSafe has only identified 17 close contacts in NSW that would not have been found via any other means or that it is now'rarely'use for contact tracing in Victoria.

As our technology review indicates, based on the parameters of knowledge and capabilities at the time of app launch, it is believed that the COVIDSafe app was the correct tool to employ, the report concludes.

Earlier this year, the Digital Transformation Agency refused to release copies of cloud hosting bills or architecture diagrams for COVIDSafe after it came to light that it was spending $100,000 a month with Amazon Web Services.

The DTA has since revised down the hosting bill estimate to approximately $75,000 a monthafter some performance tuning, and expects this cost will fall as low as $60,000 a month by the end of July.
