Samsung announces it’s shutting down its cloud storage service; here’s all you need to now – Republic World

Samsung has asked its customers to move theirfiles away from itscloud storage service as the company is making some changes in the services that it offers. Users are advised to back up 'My Files' and 'Gallery Sync' as soon as possible. Samsung also mentions that failing to back up the data might result in the permanent deletion of data that is stored on Samsung Cloud, but why isSamsung asking users to back up their data? On an official support page titled 'Changes to Gallery Sync, Samsung Cloud Drive and Premium Storage', the company informs users about changes that are being made to Samsung Cloud services in 2021, which includethe replacement of 'My Files' and 'Gallery Sync' by Microsoft OneDrive. OneDrive is Microsoft's cloud-based storage solution. Additionally, Samsung has also warned users about the permanent deletion of data associated with the aforementioned features once the changes are complete. Hence, users around the world are given a region-based deadline to back up their data onSamsung Cloud.

The services of existing users will be available till July 31, 2021. The features that are to be deprecated areGallery Sync, Drive and Premium Storage Subscription. From August 1, 2021, the existing use of Gallery Sync and Drive will cease, and any cancellation of the ongoing Premium Storage Subscription will be refunded. However, users haveto download their data until September 30.After that, any data left on Samsung Cloud will be permanently deleted.

As and when users select OneDrive integration to transfer their data, they can continue to use the Gallery Sync and Drive features, which will save data to Microsoft OneDrive. However, the automatic transfer of the user's data from Samsung Cloud to OneDrive will be supported until July 31, 2021. If a user wants to download the data to their PC, they can do so before September 30, 2021. Additionally, the Samsung Cloud termination will take place in two groups, based on the geographic locations of the user. The members of Group 1, which include the US, UK, a major portion of Europe and Australia, have until the end of the day to use the automated Microsoft OneDrive migration.

You can upload to either using the desktop app, mobile app, or web browser interface. iCloud has a maximum file size of 50GB, whereas, with Dropbox, you can upload files up to 50GB via the website or up to 2TB via the desktop or mobile apps.

iCloud is a particularly well-designed service if you use Apple devices. It seamlessly integrates with the way Macs, iPhones, and iPads organize files. Its easy, for example, to set up a folder structure on Finder, which will back up to iCloud, or to synchronize photos from your iPhones camera roll with the Photos app across your devices. The native integration also means that theres little in the way of setupif you have an Apple device, youll already have an iCloud account, and all the software you need to start storing your files is built in. Simply put, the more Apple devices you use, the more useful iCloud will be to you.

The downside of this is that it doesnt integrate well with other devices such as Windows PCs. The iCloud app for Windows is clunky and difficult to work with, and the interface for accessing it through a web browser is very basic compared to competitors. This means that if you dont use Apple devices, theres really not much reason to use iCloud.

Dropbox, however, integrates well with both Mac and Windows computers, with your Dropbox folder working nicely with Finder or Windows File Explorer, respectively. It also has a useful and intuitive app for a wide range of mobile phones and tablets. Because it doesnt have the native integration of iCloud, there is a sign-up and installation process to go through, but this isnt too much trouble. And once its done, everything should run smoothly.

If you have any problems while using iCloud, youll be thankful that Apples support is very efficient. All users, even those on the free plan, can talk to a support technician over the phone, and when we checked, the wait time was just two minutes.

With Dropbox, phone support is only available to Business Teams users. All users on paid plans can contact tech support via email and expect a response within a day. But users on the free plan have no way of contacting tech support and so are limited to the chatbot.

So, in terms of being able to contact support, Apple wins. But both providers have active community forums and online FAQ sections where you should find the answers to many questions without the need for additional support.

With iCloud, all users get 5GB of free storage, while with Dropbox, you only get 2GB. However, neither of these will be sufficient for most professional users needs. And with both services, you need to pay a subscription fee to access more storage.

Dropboxs cheapest paid plan costs $11.99 a month (or $9.99/month if billed annually upfront) and gives you 2TB of storage. Theres also the Professional plan, which gives you 3TB for $19.99/month ($16.58/month if billed annually). Bigger teams can get unlimited storage. The Advanced plan costs $25/user/month ($20 if billed annually) and has no storage limit, though its only available to teams with three or more users.

iCloud pricing, meanwhile, starts at $0.99/month for 50GB of space. You can also get 200GB for $2.99/month or 2TB for $9.99/month, with no annual commitment. So, iClouds pricing is overall cheaper, though there are no advanced plans offering more than 2TB of storage. That said, 2TB should suffice for most individual users.

iCloud and Dropbox are both very impressive cloud storage providers, which both make it easy to backup your files and access them across your devices.

Our first choice overall is Dropbox because it has a much broader range of features built around collaboration and functions better across a wider range of device brands. Its particularly useful for creative professionals who want a lot of storage space and who want to be able to collaborate with other users.

However, iClouds integration does make it a good choice for those who primarily use Apple devices, particularly personal users who dont need as much space. Its a much more affordable option if a smaller plan of 50 or 200GB will suit your needs.

And with fully orchestrated failover and failback, organizations can recover infected applications and data from just seconds back. With just a few clicks, our journal-based recovery is flexible enough to recover only what is needed whether thats files, virtual machines, or an entire application stack from a point in time.

V9.0 also provides:

The instant restore feature means users can restore VMs straight into production without having to fail over to a DR site first. Version 9s preservation of journal checkpoints allows users to revert to other points in time for the same VM if the selected restore point does not meet requirements.

Personally, in order to prevent hardware failure, and being able to access my files while Im away from home, Ive also been wanting to migrate some of my data from my NAS to Microsoft OneDrive and Azure Storage Accounts.

A few weeks ago,Synologyreached out to me and asked me if Id be interested to review their freeCloud Syncsolution with Azure Storage. Since Ive been thinking about replacing two 6-year old NAS devices at home and wanting to move some files to Azure and OneDrive, I have accepted the offer. Although Synology supplied me with the NAS device (DS920+), this is not a sponsored post, Im only sharing my opinion based on my own experience.

Synology Cloud Sync is extremely easy to configure. Once youve logged in to the web portal of your Synology NAS, it can be found in the Package Center, you can install it with one click (and follow the wizard).

Once installed, we can start creating sync jobs. Cloud Sync supports many public cloud providers such as Microsoft Azure, OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, AWS S3, GCP Cloud Storage, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc. Ill cover Azure Storage Accounts and Microsoft OneDrive (personal) in this post.

Firstly, I have created an Azure Storage Account in the Australia Southeast region since its the closest region to my home. I connected the storage account to a VNet and added my home broadbands IP address to the firewall rule so the NAS device can reach it (as shown below). This restricts access to the storage account only from the VNet it connects to, my home IP, and other Azure services (Since Ive ticked Allow trusted Microsoft services to access this storage account).

I then created a blob container in the storage account

Then on the Synology NAS web portal, I created a sync job with the following information:

Then I can choose the local path (a share on the NAS), and the remote path (in Azure storage blob), I can also select the sync direction. In this case, Ive chosen bi-directional so changes from both ends will be replicated to each other.

I can also specify a schedule, i.e. stop sync during busy hours to save network bandwidth.

I can still modify the settings after the jobs are created. For example, I can configure the polling interval, set network throttling, folder exclusions, file filter (based on file extensions), add/remove/modify sync folders etc.

Depending on the size of the folder and your Internet link speed, the initial synchronisation can take a while. Once completed, youll see the status as Up to date

At this stage, any changes on the NAS folder or the blob container will be replicated. Ive done some tests (as shown below):

With Microsoft OneDrive, I have 2 real use cases:

Setting up sync jobs for OneDrive is super easier. All you need is to sign in to your Microsoft Account when prompted, and give user consent:

You will be prompted to be redirected to the Synology NAS web portal (a typical oAuth workflow):

All the other settings are the same as the Azure Storage, you can choose sync direction, scheduling settings, pulling interval, network bandwidth throttling, etc.

For the OneDrive connection, I performed similar sets of tests that I previously performed for the Storage Account, the behaviour is very similar locally initiated changes trigger synchronisation which gets replicated to OneDrive as soon as the changes are made. However, changes on the OneDrive dont seem to get replicated to the local folder as quickly as when syncing with Azure Storage Account. the default polling interval for OneDrive is 600 seconds (every 10 minutes), I tried to decrease it to 15 seconds, but it doesnt seem like Cloud Sync is polling OneDrive every 15 seconds as configured. the files did appear on the NAS share after around 10 minutes though. This is not a big deal, I can live with it.

Overall, Im pretty happy with the feature Cloud Sync offers.

For Microsoft OneDrive, although the polling interval is a little bit too long in my opinion, it is perfect for what I need to achieve. Moving forward, I can definitely see myself setting up more and more folders to sync, store a local copy of my OneDrive folders on the NAS so I dont have to keep cleaning up spaces from the SSDs on my PCs because once youve accessed a file via OneDrive client, the file gets downloaded and stored on your PC permanently.

With Azure Storage Accounts, in my opinion, since Synology NAS devices are generally used by home users and small to medium businesses, it offers a very cost-effective way to migrate/synchronize files to cloud platforms. The configuration is pretty easy and the synchronization is pretty effective based on my testing. However, for large enterprises, I believe its missing some features:
