6 Ways to Improve Water Conservation in Mining Operations – Water Technology Online

As water experts warn of a serious global water shortage coinciding with climate change, the need for sustainable water management, especially freshwater, within the mining industry has become more critical than ever.

Photos by Jeremy Bishop on Unsplash

The mining industry is a key component of the global low-carbon transition. If world leaders want to limit global average temperature rise to 2C, they must have more than 3.3 billion tons of minerals and metals to deploy renewable energy storage and generation. This will include wind, solar, geothermal and nuclear energy. According to a World Bank report,1 mineral production such as that of lithium, graphite and cobalt could increase by as much as 500% by 2050 to meet these needs.

But mining also happens to be on the front line of water security risk. The mining industry uses water for a variety of purposes, including mineral processing (e.g., flotation), dust suppression, slurry transport and storage, extraction processes and site usage. In most mining operations, operators extract water from groundwater, streams, rivers, lakes or through commercial water service suppliers. And to make things worse, some mining sites are in areas where water is already scarce.

As water experts warn of a serious global water shortage coinciding with climate change, sustainable water management within the mining industry will be critical.

There is already evidence of a growing awareness of the need for water sustainability within organizations in the mining industry. A 2019 Carbon Development Project (CDP) analysis2 stated 91% of respondents from the mining industry reported exposure to water-related risks. The respondents expect almost two-thirds (61%) of those risks to materialize in the next three years.

While the exact specifics and efficiencies to be gained will vary greatly depending on the technicalities of the industry process and the complexity of design and geographic location, there are a few proven tactics to optimize water management. Here are six ways to improve water conservation in the mining industry:

One of the most common ways to maximize the reusage of water is to install a water treatment unit. There are various efficient technologies available for wastewater treatment. The precise solution, however, will depend on each projects treatment requirements. Some of the common solutions include membrane technology and thermal treatments for salt-based pollutants. There is also bio-reactor and polymer extraction for organic pollutant treatments.

Wastewater treatment units treat effluent and recover water for reuse and drinking water purposes. They also help minimize the environmental compliance challenges and risks associated with effluent discharges. When and if installed, the next step would be to ensure an optimized automated chemical dosage in the water/wastewater treatment process. Then operators should develop a maintenance and reliability plan to cut downtime impact.

Most mines operate some sort of recycling system to minimize the draw on fresh water. But the concept behind a closed-loop system is to virtually end water losses from the system. For example, Anglo American,3 a British multinational mining company, is focusing on two areas: evaporation measurement and dry tailings (waste) disposal.

Saving water is vital for the long-term sustainability of not only the mining industry, but the global climate and geo-political stability.

Like any other industry, mining operations distribute water through a network of pumps, valves and pipes. And like most other industries, leaks always pose a production or economic risk to some extent.

Even if individual leaks appear small, they can often accumulate into a large volume quickly if not managed properly. The following are some of the best practices related to water leak management:

R&D and Innovation

Some of the worlds biggest leaps in technology have occurred in the face of crisis, where minds focused on developing innovative solutions to age-old problems. Innovation through research and development can pave the way for industry-leading water conservation technology. Of course, the exact solution will differ depending on the domain specifics within the mining industry.

One example can be found in industrial-scale experiments conducted by Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF)5 based in Germany. This group demonstrated how water usage can be optimized in the extraction of fluorite, an important raw material used in the smelting of iron and aluminum extraction. On a similar note, Anglo American is also exploring methods for dry separation of ore, with early estimates showing the potential for as much as 40% reduction in water used per unit of mineral production.

Leveraging modern technology such as artificial intelligence (AI) and analytics-backed IoT sensors can work wonders for legacy plants. The pay-off period may not be immediate. Operators must collect the data first to understand the points of inefficiencies before they can take corrective actions through real-time AI-enabled systems.

AI can reduce energy in water/wastewater treatment processes to save on costs and maximize wastewater reuse. Installing an AI system at the mining site that allows plant staff to leverage historical data as well as continuously monitor and optimize the assets for water consumption. Like most AI-enabled technology, effectiveness only improves with time as it keeps learning from process parameters.

A fundamental part of any water conservation plans is a regular water management audit. This procedure allows operators to continuously evaluate opportunities for improvement. An audit involves accounting for every cubic foot of water that goes in and out of the site and analyzing improvement opportunities in each of the processes.

The next step would be industry benchmarking to compare the audit results against industry leaders and take actions to incorporate those potential improvements. The 2012 International Council of Mining & Metals (ICMM) Report6 discusses multiple case studies of companies finding significant areas of improvement following a comprehensive water audit.

Educating the staff on the importance of water conservation will help them understand why continuous improvement is essential. True environmental stewardship requires that everyone in the organization believes in the operations water goals. And each staff member must feel comfortable in challenging existing procedures and share ideas.

The mining industry is currently faced with significant challenges not only in terms of energy usage, but water consumption as well. The World Economic Forum7 predicts a shortfall of 40% between demand and supply of water by 2030. This represents the greatest global economic risk over the next decade.

Saving water is vital for the long-term sustainability of the mining industry. Embracing new technologies and strategies is one step in the right direction.

More than 10% of South Africa’s miners have had COVID-19: data – Mining Journal

According to the latest figures from the Minerals Council South Africa, there have been 45,992 positive cases among the industry's 450,000 employees.

There were 1,288 active cases and there had been 595 deaths, according to the figures released yesterday.

The number of vaccinated employees and contractors has grown to 69,218 from just over 2,000 seven weeks ago.

The council and labour groups last month reaffirmed their support for South Africa's national vaccination programme but noted getting a jab was voluntary, following union concerns raised in June.

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, the National Union of Mineworkers, Solidarity, UASA and the minerals council said they recognised the increasing role the private sector played in administering vaccines and urged all industry employees to choose to get vaccinated as soon as they had the opportunity to do so.

"The industry supports the national #IChooseVacciNation campaign, noting that vaccination is voluntary, and that no employee will be coerced to vaccinate, or discriminated against if they do not vaccinate," the minerals council said.

South Africa-based miner Sibanye-Stillwater said recently it was making significant progress with its vaccine roll-out.

The country has been battling a third wave of the virus and has recorded more than 1.66 million cases and 56,506 deaths according to Johns Hopkins University today.

Kakadu mining and radiation – The Saturday Paper

Carved out of the pristine surroundings of Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory, the Ranger uranium mine has long been a site of deep controversy.

The mine may have been decommissioned in January, but concerns remain about its legacy, as the Mirarr traditional owners suffer through a mysterious health crisis.

The stillbirth rate among Aboriginal people living near the mine is more than twice as high as among Indigenous Australians elsewhere in the Top End, and rates of cancer are almost 50 per cent higher.

A six-year Northern Territory investigation into the issue failed to identify the cause, noting only that risk factors relating to diet, smoking and alcohol consumption were higher in the local population than in other Aboriginal populations.

The investigation was conducted by staff at the Population and Digital Health Branch of the Northern Territory Department of Health and overseen by an independent reviewer in cancer, epidemiologist professor Bruce Armstrong.

The report, published in November 2020, concluded ionising radiation from uranium mining was unlikely to be linked but did not categorically rule it out.

However, a Flinders University Centre for Remote Health analysis of the government investigation, published in the Medical Journal of Australia this month, found that the parameters of the inquiry were too narrow.

Cancer is a complex condition, Dr Rosalie Schultz, author of the analysis, tells The Saturday Paper. A study like this cant find a definitive cause.

The Alice Springs GP was concerned that the main outtake of the report was that Aboriginal people should smoke and drink less.

Statistically, it didnt look like smoking and drinking caused the excess cancer rate, she says. Its almost like blaming people rather than looking into the reasons why is it people are smoking and drinking more in that area in particular, for instance?

Centuries before Western science understood the dangers of radioactive substances, Aboriginal people were avoiding the uranium-rich sites near Kakadu.

With more than 200 documented leaks, spills and other incidents associated with the mine, Schultz argues the impact of Ranger was multifaceted, including social consequences not considered by the investigation.

Things like destruction of waterbirds and creeks, the worry of that when you get your food and livelihood from the land, she says.

A senate estimates committee heard in 2009 that 100,000 litres of contaminated water a day was leaking from the mines tailings dam into rock fissures beneath Kakadu.

In another breach in 2004, dozens of mine employees were found to have showered in and consumed water containing 400 times the legal limit of uranium.

In response to the release of the Territory government report, Reuben Cooper, chair of the Red Lily Health Board Aboriginal Corporation, welcomed messages to encourage reduction in smoking and alcohol consumption but said the findings offered an incomplete picture.

This investigation does not discuss the reasons for higher rates of smoking and alcohol consumption in the GunbalanyaKakadu region, he said, which could include factors such as cultural dislocation, stress and royalty payments. Nor does it discuss the potential social impacts that the uranium mining industry has had on the population in the region.

Schultzs analysis expands further on these points, noting how unevenly distributed royalty money can increase inequality and the ways in which locals were deprived of a sense of agency and authority.

The inquiry didnt look at other knowledge, such as the Dreaming stories about sickness country, Schultz says.

Centuries before Western science understood the dangers of radioactive substances, Aboriginal people were avoiding the uranium-rich sites near Kakadu, which were considered inappropriate places to camp.

The Dreaming stories of the Jawoyn people warn against disturbing stones or drinking water in what they called sickness country south of Ranger, beneath which Bula the creator is said to lie dormant.

In and around the Ranger site itself, the Dreaming stories of the Mirarr warn of sacred sites that are dangerous to disturb.

Asked about Schultzs concerns regarding the scope of the inquiry, NT Health agreed that further investigation would be of benefit. Consideration of broader social impacts of the mine, inclusive of Aboriginal consultation, may provide complementary information, a spokesperson told The Saturday Paper.

While detailed social inquiry was not funded or included in the scope of the initial investigation, NT Health would welcome future research into the social impacts of mining activities.

The spokesperson added that there was insufficient data available to quantify lifestyle risk factors related to alcohol consumption, diet and smoking.

With no data available about individual exposure to ionising radiation, the report authors concluded this was unlikely to have been a contributing factor based on measurement of environmental radiation levels, consumption of bush tucker, and airborne exposure to radon gas.

Justin OBrien, chief executive of the Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation, which represents the Mirarr people, says the shocking paucity of data extends to all aspects of the health and social impacts of the mine. Its a very limited data set, so no wonder the findings are inconclusive, he says.

Rangers operators were warned the impacts should be monitored from the early days of the mine, which started operation in 1980. A 1984 report by the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies made recommendations including for the continued monitoring of the social impact of uranium mining in the region.

It is plain from North and South American evidence that impact on Indigenous communities on their health, culture, and social wellbeing, is really visible after 20 years, not the initial five years, the report read. There is clearly a case for monitoring the social impact of uranium mining wherever it occurs in Australia.

The recommendations were accepted at the time by the federal government but never implemented.

With the mine decommissioned in January this year, OBrien is concerned about whether operators Energy Resources of Australia, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto, will properly rehabilitate the Ranger site, warning that radioactive waste from uranium mining can remain hazardous for tens of thousands of years.

This is just the first chapter of the legacy of this mine, and the world is watching Rio Tinto, he says. The mining company has been given five years to complete all the rehabilitation work this is patently insufficient.

The federal government requires that all rehabilitation be complete by 2026, with monitoring to follow. The government expects the site to reach a state whereby it could potentially be incorporated into Kakadu National Park.

OBrien hopes to see further investigation of the impacts of the mine but this time with a different lens.

If youre only talking about cancer through the Western scientific model, it alienates a lot of Aboriginal people who worry it might attract cancer to them if they even talk about it, he says. We need to explore what its meant for the local lifestyle, for the town. Lets have the conversation on Aboriginal terms, on Aboriginal turf.

For Schultzs part, the monitoring of Ranger failed even in the context of Western science. They didnt do what was recommended to consider local perspectives and concerns, she says. It was a top-down epidemiological approach, where if you can exclude ionising radiation, the mine is off the hook. It feels like the science is taking a narrower approach now we used to have researchers embedded in communities. Forty years later we just look at five data points and thats it.
