It would be easy to adopt a fatalistic attitude in the wake of the IPCCs report into climate change, that the changes necessary are too big for any individual or enterprise to tackle. But the lesson that should be learned is that while the crisis is dire, we can and should make every effort to limit our effects on the environment.

This includes hosting. We think of cloud computing as emission-less. Everything happens out of sight. But it actually isn't emission-less at all. Cloud computing now contributes to 2% of global CO2 emissions.

That might seem small, but another way to think about it is that for every 50 tonnes of CO2 emissions, one of those is from online hosting.

But there are reasons to embrace green hosting that go beyond just saving the planet.

One simple way to reduce emissions, though its not comprehensive, is to use money as a proxy: if you're spending money on something, it is most likely contributing to emissions.

Reducing spending can be a reasonable target for any business that wants to emit less. One way to approach this is through the use of high-density services.

One common feature of modern life is that we use tools that are designed for a far more powerful job. We commute or take short shopping trips in vehicles designed to travel way over the speed limit, deal with extreme off-road conditions, or move tonnes of stuff. We wear jackets that claim to deal with arctic temperatures when it starts to get a little autumnal, and sports gear for elite athletes when out for a light jog.

Computers are no different, whether its personal computing - a top-of-the-range gaming PC used to idly browse the web, say - or the equivalent in the enterprise. Computers often have boring lives given how powerful their processors are, the size of their storage, and their high-speed internet connections.

Often, they are given a small task that they only need to do part of the time, or with a fraction of their processing power. This unused computing power of deployed computers could be used more efficiently by increasing service density - simply put, using fewer computers to do the same tasks.

With hosting, service density is key to reducing the carbon footprint of any workload and the energy efficiency of a data center. Every application has resources allocated to it whenever it needs them but also when those resources are unused, they can be allocated to another application or service.

Weve seen this work in action. In one case, a university was able to replace sites hosted on 2,000 devices, scattered across their university campus with dense, containerised hosting - creating an immediate 30% reduction on hosting costs.

Fewer computers in action being used means both saving money and cutting emissions by reducing energy use - not to mention reduced e-waste when components need to be replaced.

Businesses are keen to do more to reduce the environmental impact, but green hosting is often quite far down the list of things that are being considered. Hosting is very much out of sight, unlike, for example, the waste that a business might produce.

Green hosting has the potential to be an easy win, reducing emissions and saving costs at the same time. Many businesses and organisations have built their IT in an ad-hoc and DIY manner, leading to inefficiencies - not just in density but in how IT and development teams work with this infrastructure.

Consolidation and higher density can mean increased efficiencies in these teams, too. There is also the opportunity to consolidate infrastructure into a single bill, and even move to a more efficient data center if this is possible - moving cloud to the Nordics can mean even greater savings in emissions.

When businesses are looking for ways to be more eco-friendly, whether its buying offsets, considering more hybrid working, or any number of disruptive or expensive options, its important to consider the quick wins.

Green hosting may be less visible than many other options, but it has the potential to both slash emissions and save money. Every business should consider it.

Cloud Native Driving Change in Enterprise and Analytics – InformationWeek

A pair of keynote talks at the DeveloperWeek Global conference held online this week hashed out the growing trends among enterprises going cloud native and how cloud native can affect the future of business analytics. Dan McKinney, senior engineer anddeveloper relations lead with Cloudsmith, focused on cloud native supporting the continuous software pipelines in enterprises. Roman Stanek, CEO of GoodData, spoke on the influence cloud native can have on the analytics space. Their keynotes highlighted how software development in the cloud is creating new dynamics within organizations.

In his keynote, Stanek spoke about how cloud native could transform analytics and business intelligence. He described how developers might take ownership of business intelligence, looking at how data is exposed, workflows, and platforms. Most people are just overloaded with PDF files and Excel files and its up to them to visualize and interpret the data, Stanek said.

There is a democratization underway of data embedded into workflows and Slack, he said, but being able to expose data from applications or natively integrated in applications is the province of developers. Tools exist, Stanek said, for developers to make such data analytics more accessible and understandable by users. We want to help people make decisions, he said. We also want to get them data at the right time, with the right context and volume.

Stanek said he sees more developers owning business applications, insights, and intelligence up to the point where end users can make decisions. This industry is heading away from an isolated industry where business people are copying data into visualization tools and data preparation tools and analytics tools, he said. We are moving into a world where we will be providing all of this functionality as a headless functionality. The rise of headless compute services, which do not have local keyboards, monitors, or other means of input and are controlled over a network, may lead to different composition tools that allow business users to build their own applications with low-code/no-code resources, Stanek said.

Enterprise understanding of what constitutes cloud is evolving as well. Though cloud native and cloud hosted sound similar, McKinney said they can be different resources. The cloud goes way beyond just storing and hosting, he said. It is at the heart of a whole new range of technical possibilities. Many enterprises are moving from on-prem and cloud-hosted solutions to completely cloud-native solutions for continuous software, McKinney said, as cloud providers expand their offerings. It is opening up new ways to build and deploy applications.

The first wave of applications migrated to the cloud were cloud hosted, he said. At a very high level, a cloud-hosted application has been lifted and shifted onto cloud-based server instances. That gave them access to basic features from cloud providers and offered some advantages to on-prem applications, McKinney said. Still, the underlying architecture of the applications remained largely the same. Legacy applications migrated to the cloud were never built to take advantage of the paradigm shift that cloud providers present, he said. Such applications cannot take advantage of shared services or pools of resources and are not suitable for scaling. It doesnt have the elasticity, McKinney said.

The march toward the cloud has since accelerated with the next wave of applications to take advantage of the cloud were constructed natively, he said. Applications born and deployed with the technology of cloud providers in mind typically make use of continuous integration, orchestrators, container engines, and microservices, McKinney said. Cloud-native applications are increasingly architected as smaller and smaller pieces and they share and reuse services wherever possible.

Enterprises favor cloud-native solutions now for such reasons as the total cost of ownership, performance and security of the solution, and accommodating distributed teams, McKinney said. There is a desire, he said, to shift from capital expense on infrastructure to operational expense on running costs. These days the costs of cloud-native applications can be calculated fairly easily, McKinney said. Cloud-native resources offer fully managed service models, which can maintain the application itself. You dont have to think about what version of the application you have deployed, he said. Its all part of the subscription.

The ability to scale up with the cloud to meet increased demand was one of the first drivers of migration, McKinney said, but cloud-native applications can go beyond simple scaling. Cloud-native applications can scale down to the level of individual functions, he said. Its more responsive, efficient, and able to better suit increasing demands -- particularly spike loads.

McKinney also wanted to make a case for security with cloud native compared with on-prem and cloud-hosted resources. Many recent security breaches, he said, targeted software deployed on-premise or hosted on private cloud. Networks were still compromised, data was exfiltrated, and were still grappling with the implications. The security of the development and build process can be more crucial than where applications are deployed, he said. Thats where cloud-native solutions can have an advantage because cloud-native solutions need to have security concerns first and foremost throughout the entire development process, McKinney said. They dont make any assumptions of the supposed security benefits [of on-prem or private cloud].

Microsoft’s Azure Virtual Desktop now works without Active Directory but there are caveats – The Register

Microsoft has declared general availability for Azure Virtual Desktop with the VMs joined to Azure AD rather than Active Directory, but the initial release has many limitations.

Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), once called Windows Virtual Desktop, is Microsoft's first-party VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) solution.

Although cloud-hosted, Azure Virtual Desktop is (or was) based on Microsoft's Remote Desktop Services tech which required domain-joined PCs and therefore a connection to full Windows Active Directory (AD), either in the form of on-premises AD over a VPN, or via Azure Active Directory Domain Services (AAD DS) which is a Microsoft-managed AD server automatically linked to Azure AD. In the case that on-premises AD is used, AD Connect is also required, introducing further complexity.

Microsoft has now stated that Azure AD-joined VMs are generally available for AVD. "This new configuration allows you to provide access to cloud-only users (created in Azure AD and not synchronized from an on-prem directory) which wasn't possible before," said senior program manager David Belanger.

Why AVD and not the shiny new Windows 365? Although both offer virtual Windows desktops on Azure there are many differences even though the company states that Windows 365 uses AVD under the covers.

One key difference is that Windows 365 is not elastic: it is priced per user/month irrespective of usage. Using AVD, the administrator has control of the VMs and they can be scaled for most efficient concurrent use, or even shut down when not required though there could be availability issues if the Azure region were overloaded and a deallocated VM could not be restarted.

Another difference is that AVD supports pooled desktops, and is the only scenario in which multi-user Windows 10 is permitted. A quick play with Microsoft's Azure price calculator shows that the price per user could be under $10 per month with a pooled host, versus Windows 365 which starts at $24 per month, since it only supports a full VM per user. AVD also has extra features including remote applications, rather than full desktops. The licensing for AVD is also relatively generous in that many Microsoft 365 plans come with access rights included, starting at Microsoft 365 Business Premium.

"Azure Virtual Desktop virtual machines (VMs) are charged at Linux compute rate for Windows 10 single-session, Windows 10 multi-session and Windows Server," Microsoft states.

Joining an AVD host pool (collection of VMs) to Azure AD

The downside is that AVD is more complex than Windows 365 to set up and administer. The AD dependency has been one of the factors in this. The ability to dispense with this and simply use Azure AD join for the VMs is a considerable advantage, especially for small-scale deployments or businesses. The service (with Azure AD join) has been in preview since July, but there are a number of limitations.

The biggest of these is that only local user profiles are supported. Microsoft has a solution for storing user profiles on Azure Files, for scalability and the ability for users to roam between hosts calls - FSLogix (a technology bought in via acquisition in November 2018). Yet "Azure AD-joined VMs can't access Azure Files file shares for FSLogix or MSIX app attach," the docs inform us. This also means there is only limited support for pooled desktops, one of the primary attractions of AVD. Microsoft offers as a supported configuration "pooled desktops or apps where users don't need to save data on the VM. For example, for applications that save data online or connect to a remote database." There may be ways around this devised by resourceful admins but it is a severe constraint.

Some users have also found FSLogix problematic, especially with Microsoft's updated versions since the acquisition. One issue was "random days where the frxsvc.exe process will delete files and folders from the C: drive. Based on what's deleted, I suspect it's actually trying to delete everything but can't do the stuff that's in use," reported a user. This was believed to have been fixed in a recent update.

An inherent problem with FSLogix is that by default if the agent fails to mount the remote profile for any reason, a local profile is created, and then the local profile persists and the FSLogix one will not reattach. There is a setting to have local profiles automatically deleted, but in this case the user may lose documents. Profile management is not trivial, and such issues are perhaps one of the reasons behind the more easily managed Windows 365 solution.

Slack tailors new collaboration tools for the ‘digital HQ’ – ZDNet

In anticipation that working in the office will never look the same again, Slack has introduced new capabilities tailored for hybrid working and the "digital HQ".

According to Slack product VP Noah Weiss, there has been "overwhelming" customer feedback about needing to recreate an office environment in a hybrid world.

"What everyone is looking for when I talk to customers is how do I go from a world where my headquarters used to be on Wall Street, or Howard Street if I was Slack, or Mission Street if it was Salesforce," he told ZDNet.

"I need a new street, and that street has to be virtual, and it has to be this digital HQ, where I can bring my employees, my customers, my partners [into] all this shared digital space, so they can work together."

One of these new features is Slack Clips, which will allow users to create and share audio, video, and screen recordings within any channel or DM in Slack, as an alternative to just sending a message.

Users on the receiving end will be able to playback the clips on their own time, speed up or slow down the content, watch with live captions, or open a transcript version of the conversation. They will also be able to respond with a medium of their choice: Text, audio, or video.

Slack said it is also expanding Slack Connect by allowing its enterprise customers to create "sponsored connections" by inviting and hosting anyone in Slack, without requiring them to be on a paid Slack plan themselves.

Weiss likens the way Slack Connect sponsored connections would work to how DocuSign is used.

"If you're a DocuSign customer, you can make sure that anyone you send a DocuSign to, they can sign a contract or download it for themselves, but if you want to create your own DocuSign that people can sign digitally or certify, you'd then obviously have to pay for that," he said.

"The idea here is really for our biggest enterprise customers. It should be a brain-dead decision to bring all of their customers onto Slack Connect because they then can provide better, faster, and more responsive service, support, sales, account management, and so on."

Both Slack Clips and Slack Connect sponsored connections will be generally available in fall 2021.

Additionally, the company is set to introduce a version of Slack specifically for government called GovSlack. Unlike the usual version of Slack, GovSlack will run on Amazon Web Services GovCloud, so it's compliant with security and operational requirements of the US government, including FedRAMP High and DoD IL4 certifications.

GovSlack is due for launch sometime next year and will only be available in the United States for now. Weiss said the company would explore expansion opportunities for GovSlack in the future.

The announcement follows Salesforce's launching its first integrations with Slack across its clouds and Customer 360 in August. This included the launch of Slack-First Customer 360, which aims to allow enterprises to collaborate and streamline workflows with one view of the customer.

The acquisition of Slack by the CRM giant was officially announcedon December 1, ending speculation the CRM giant was looking toexpand its footprintmore into collaboration and workflows.

The deal, which cost Salesforce $27.7 billion, was finalised in July.

As Salesforce product management SVP Rob Seaman puts it, the acquisition means Salesforce can bring its products into Slack through integrations.

"One the biggest benefits of Slack it plays out the amount of time that people spend in it with that it becomes a very attractive place to put your software," he said. "The other thing that's super attractive about it is the way that you put your software there is consistent, agnostic of who puts it there, because of the design system that exists inside.

"When really embraced this digital HQ metaphor we needed to put our software in this digital HQ, if you will, and our bet is going to be Slack. We think the combination of Slack is the digital HQ for employees and Salesforce is the software you use to digitally engage your customers and your partners."
