Making the Most from WEP – Wi-FiPlanet.com – Wi-Fi Planet

March 06, 2003

While wired equivalent privacy (WEP) encryption is not good enough for mission critical data, its still better than nothing for most WLANs. Heres why WEP does what it does, and the elbow grease you can apply to make it more secure.

We all know by now that 802.11swired equivalent privacy(WEP) isnt good enough to protect our data. That isnt just the theory, its a fact. Sure, WEP will stop Joe Wireless, but freely available programs likeAirSnortenable Joe Cracker break into your WLAN with little trouble.

Thus equipped, a cracker only needs some patience to mount a successful invasion. Specifically, it usually takes only five to ten million packets to break WEP encryption. And, at fifteen million packets, its almost dead certain that a dedicated attacker can pry the lid off your network traffic. Or, to put it another way, a small WLAN with four active users is almost certain to be cracked with two weeks of eavesdropping.

Making matters even worse, the cracking techniques most frequently used will work equally well no matter what WEP key length youre using. Thus, a 128-bit key is just as vulnerable as a 64-bit key. Indeed, even if a WEP key was 1,204 bits, it still as crackable by todays methods as ones that the minimal 64-bits.

How can that be? To understand how that works, you have to look closely at how WEP actually generates and manages, or more to the point doesnt, manage its encryption keys.

Every WEP packet is encrypted separately with an RC4 cipher stream generated by an encryption key. That key is made up of a 24-bit initialization vector (IV) and either a 40-bit or 104-bit WEP key thats usually set by your wireless device. Combined, they have a total length of 64 or 128-bits, hence the popular names of 64 and 128-bit WEP keys (some vendors use to call the 64-bit key a 40-bit key, but they simply werent including the 24-bit IV so 64 and 40-bit WEP are the same thing). This transmitted packet is generated by a mathematical operation called bitwise exclusive OR (XOR) using the packet sent to your network interface card (NIC) by your computer and the RC4 encryption key.

With me so far? Now, the first thing that kills WEPs fundamental security is that every packet you send also includes the IV in plaintext. In short, any would-be snooper can immediately see part of the key.

Now, because the IV is only 24-bits long, you can only get 16,777,216 different RC4 encryption streams for every key, regardless of how long the rest of the key is. Sounds like a lot doesnt it? Its not even close to enough. The plaintext IV is constantly reused and it takes many packets to send even a quick Hi, how are you? instant message, so it doesnt take long for a snooper to gather up enough packets to start cracking your messages.

If that was WEPs only weakness, it would still be insecure but it would take a serious processing power and a lot more packets to break into a WLAN. Unfortunately, RC4 has another problem. Not all of those close to 17-million possible IV numbers work as well as others in RC4. When one of these approximately 9,000 Weak IVs, are used to encrypt packets, a snooping program can recognize and collect them. These Weak IVs give additional clues on the full encryption key, no matter its length, and so they make breaking WEP that much easier.

There are other theoretical ways to take advantage of WEP, but the combination of these two ways of exploiting the IV have proven to be easy and effective enough that little effort is being spent on developing software to exploit these holes. Trust me, the existing way to pry open a WEP-protected network work more than well enough.

Well, for one thing you cant wait around for a solution. Yes, there are replacements to WEP coming likeWi-Fi Protected Access(WPA), but it hasproblems of its own. 802.11i, which hopefully will take care of wireless security until someone works out bigger and better ways of cracking wireless, is still a work in progress.

In the meantime, you can make the most of WEP by changing your key frequently. I would recommend small offices with security concerns do this once a week, while companies with ten or more wireless PCs with sensitive information should change the WEP daily.

Sounds easy doesnt it? Its not. When they built WEP, they didnt build in network key management. With almost all WLAN NICs and APs, you have to manually reset WEP to the new IV on each and every device, one by one.

That may only be annoying in your home office, but its a true pain in the rump for network administrators with dozens or even hundreds of wireless-enabled devices. Not to mention that if you enter the IV wrong on a PC, its user will find that it cant get on the network. Adding insult to injury, if you get it wrong on an access point (AP), the entire area of the network that access point serves will be out of action.

Of course, you could have your users reset their own computers WEP settings, but thats just asking for a technical support disaster of epic proportions.

Besides simply resetting your WEP key, you should follow these simple rules for making WEP as secure as possible. If your WEP software asks you for a passphrase or string to generate a key, donotuse your SSID, company name, network name, or any other easy to guess alphanumeric string. Treat setting WEP keys the same way you a strong password. Why make life any easier for a cracker then it already is, right?

If you must manually enter the key, youre restricted to the numbers 0-9 and letters a-f In this case, dont simply hit the same key over and over again or use some simple pattern like 1,2,3, and so on.

If you do this, and change your key frequently, you can maximize WEPs minimal protection. Good security? Heck no! But, its definitely better.

Come the day that802.1xarrives in all wireless, well finally get key management. Alas, while 802.1x is available in Windows XP, and some access points and proprietary setups, but its still relatively uncommon. Implementing it properly in WLANs is an issue being dealt with in the still unfinished 802.11i. Eventually, well all use 802.1x for our WLANs, but that day isnt here yet.

Of course, there are add-on solutions, like Ciscos LEAP which is adds a proprietary take on Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) combined with RADIUS. It works well, and it enables new WEP keys per session. It also, however, requires that all the equipment be LEAP enabled, which isnt cheap you then have to replace any older WLAN NICs and access points.

Another path often taken is to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt all WLAN communications. While straight-forward it enough, it does mean that youll need to either add VPN software, or in the case of some operating systems like Windows XP, Linux and the BSDs, implement their VPN features. VPNs must also be coordinated across the network, but VPNs can be centrally managed thus making running them much easier for administrators and users alike.

So, in summary, if you want the best WLAN security today, either use an add-on approach like LEAP and be ready to use only equipment from a single vendoror be ready to work with the added complexity of a VPN.

But, if youre willing to take the time and trouble, WEP alone can still be useful.

WhatsApp launches encryption in iCloud and Google Drive backups – InTallaght

The Facebook messaging app has been announcing many new features in all facets of the application in recent months. We are not just talking about the interface, its design or new functions to send or receive messages with greater privacy. Since now we have known that one of the most anticipated functions finally reaches the app, which had already advanced that it would arrive at some point, and today it finally announces it definitively. We talked about the solution to a problem that the messaging app had always been blamed for, the vulnerability of backup copies of chats in iCloud and Google Drive.

At last there are encrypted backups

WhatsApp is the leading global messaging service to offer * both * end-to-end encrypted messaging and backups on iCloud or Google Drive.

So you can make sure that besties voice messages and mums secret recipe will be safely stored in a place only you can access.

WhatsApp (@WhatsApp) September 10, 2021

It has been through the WhatsApp account on Twitter that we have finally learned that the backup copies of the chats in the main cloud services they will be end-to-end encrypted. In this announcement, it has been advanced that this function will reach all users, which will finally close one of the largest known vulnerabilities in the messaging app. And it is that the problems regarding the backup of the chats in the cloud are long, so it is a long-awaited solution.

The problem so far has been that while the chats on our phone are protected by end-to-end encryption, which prevents anyone from reading the messages, even if they intercept the data (it can only be done with a password saved on our mobile) in the case of backup copies of chats in Google Drive and iCloud you were not encrypted, and are stored as plain text. This means that if such damage falls into the hands of others by an attack of any kind, they will be able to read all our messages without any problem, since it is not necessary to decrypt them with a password.

Therefore, what WhatsApp has now announced that this functionality comes imminently to all chats saved in the cloud. WhatsApp has wanted to get chest out and remember that doing this has been a challenge. From what the firm has revealed now, it seems that the work has been arduous, and they have had to redo from top to bottom all the code that takes our chats to the cloud of Google and Apple.

DeepMind tells Google it has no idea how to make AI less toxic – The Next Web

Did you knowNeural is taking the stage this fall? Together with an amazing line-up of experts, we will explore the future of AI during TNW Conference 2021.Secure your ticket now!

Opening the black box. Reducing the massive power consumption it takes to train deep learning models. Unlocking the secret to sentience. These are among the loftiest outstanding problems in artificial intelligence. Whoever has the talent and budget to solve them will be handsomely rewarded with gobs and gobs of money.

But theres an even greater challenge stymieing the machine learning community, and its starting to make the worlds smartest developers look a bit silly. We cant get the machines to stop being racist, xenophobic, bigoted, and misogynistic.

Nearly every big tech outfit and several billion-dollar non-profits are heavily invested in solving AIs toxicity problem. And, according to the latest study on the subject, were not really getting anywhere.

The prob: Text generators, such as OpenAIs GPT-3, are toxic. Currently, OpenAI has to limit usage when it comes to GPT-3 because, without myriad filters in place, its almost certain to generate offensive text.

In essence, numerous researchers have learned that text generators trained on unmitigated datasets (such as those containing conversations from Reddit) tend towards bigotry.

Its pretty easy to reckon why: because a massive percentage of human discourse on the internet is biased with bigotry towards minority groups.

Background: It didnt seem like toxicity was going to be an insurmountable problem back when deep learning exploded in 2014.

We all remember that time Googles AI mistook a turtle for a gun right? Thats very unlikely to happen now. Computer visions gotten much better in the interim.

But progress has been less forthcoming in the field of NLP (natural language processing).

Simply put, the only way to stop a system such as GPT-3 from spewing out toxic language is to block it from doing so. But this solution has its own problems.

Whats new: DeepMind, the creators of AlphaGo and a Google sister company under the Alphabet umbrella, recently conducted a study of state-of-the-art toxicity interventions for NLP agents.

The results were discouraging.

Per a preprint paper from the DeepMind research team:

We demonstrate that while basic intervention strategies can effectively optimize previously established automatic metrics on the REALTOXICITYPROMPTS dataset, this comes at the cost of reduced LM (language model) coverage for both texts about, and dialects of, marginalized groups.

Additionally, we find that human raters often disagree with high automatic toxicity scores after strong toxicity reduction interventions highlighting further the nuances involved in careful evaluation of LM toxicity.

The researchers ran the intervention paradigms through their paces and compared their efficacy with that of human evaluators.

A group of paid study participants evaluated text generated by state-of-the-art text generators and rated its output for toxicity. When the researchers compared the humans assessment to the machines, they found a large discrepancy.

AI may have a superhuman ability to generate toxic language but, like most bigots, it has no clue what the heck its talking about. Intervention techniques failed to accurately identify toxic output with the same accuracy as humans.

Quick take: This is a big deal. Text generators are poised to become ubiquitous in the business world. But if we cant make them non-offensive, they cant be deployed.

Right now, a text-generator that cant tell the difference between a phrase such as gay people exist and gay people shouldnt exist, isnt very useful. Especially when the current solution to keeping it from generating text like the latter is to block it from using any language related to the LGBTQ+ community.

Blocking references to minorities as a method to solve toxic language is the NLP equivalent of a sign that says for use by straight whites only.

The scary part is that DeepMind, one of the worlds most talented AI labs, conducted this study and then forwarded the results to Jigsaw. Thats Googles crack problem-solving team. Its been unsuccessfully trying to solve this problem since 2016.

The near-future doesnt look bright for NLP.

There are some important things to keep in mind for first time home buyers – KTBS

If you're one of the many who just bought or is about to buy your first home, this is for you. There is a lot to do before you move in and as soon as you get the keys and many people don't know where to start.

Fortunately, Bailey Carson, Head of Everyday Services at Angi and a home care expert, is here to offer some tips on how to prepare for day one and what to do to get your house to feel like home.

Carson said, "buying your first home is a big milestone and a large investment. If this is your first time, you may be feeling a little overwhelmed by what to do next. I'd start by booking a cleaner to do a deep clean before you move in. You'll also want to transfer utilities right away, as well as turn on your hot water heater and re-key locks."

Find the circuit breaker and your water and gas shut-off valves so you know where to go in case of an emergency. Consider adding a security system and getting that set up from day one as well. A lot of people get anxious during their first night in a new home and a security system can help put you at ease.

As soon as you have access to your new home, you'll want to stock your bathrooms. The last thing you want on move-in day is to be searching for toilet paper, soap, and towels. You'll also want to think about having some essentials on hand like trash and recycling bins, cleaning supplies, and paper towels. This will make that first day all the more smooth," said Carson.

If you're planning to sleep in your new home right away, make sure your toiletries, towels and bedding are all easy to access so you can rinse off and get some rest after a long day. If you need one, include a curtain rod, shower curtain and liner, and rings or hooks in the bathroom box so you don't flood your bathroom on day one.

Carson added, "for fall move-in dates, there are several projects you should take on right away before winter comes. Try cleaning out your dryer vent to prevent any fires. Also, weatherstripping may need to be replaced and cracks may need to be sealed. Also wrap insulation around any outdoor faucets and pipes and finally, if you have a fireplace, definitely bring in a pro to inspect it and also clean it before you start using it."

If you'll be moving in during the winter, make sure the sprinkler system and hoses are drained and stored away. You don't want them freezing throughout the winter. Keep an eye on the basement or crawl space for leaks and regularly inspect your roof, gutters, and downspouts. Clean out your drains and exhausts and cover your AC unit while it's not in use.

Carson added, "maintenance projects may not seem like the most fun thing to do when you get into your new home, but they will help you get started on the right foot. Also think about your home inspection report. If any major issues came up in that, you'll want to get those fixed right away. Or, if you had to waive a home inspection, that's a great thing to do even once the buying process is complete, to identify any of those major risk areas."

Do you have questions about your home projects or home care business? Tweet your question using #AskingAngi, and you may get some tips in an upcoming segment.

The Secrets of The Worlds Greatest Freediver – GQ Magazine

During my time in the Bahamas, I bump up against the edges of this family. For example, while waiting for Alexey to wake up from a nap one afternoon, his housemate Arnaud Jerald (the new Constant Weight Bi-Fins world-record holder until Alexey breaks it five days later) insists on making me an omelette and salade. He is from Marseille, has been at this house near the blue hole for a month, training and taking pictures. He has grand designs for his life in the sport, a plan to excite more high-end sponsors into supporting freediving. He just signed with Richard Millemaking him one of the few freedivers to ink an endorsement deal with a luxury-watch company. He shows me some underwater photos that his partner, Charlotte, had just taken of him in a polo walking on the edge of the blue hole, like it was the surface of a distant planet. He wants would-be sponsors to see what's possible with divers in the picture.

At a waterfront restaurant one night, sitting at the bar and reading a book, I find myself surrounded by a third of the field of divers. There are groupings that I relish. Pods of nationalities. Clusters by age. A married couple. A couple that might like to be married. I count off the countries represented in my midst: Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Chile, Turkey, Italy, Slovenia, France, Tunisia, and Mexico. On the beach each day are competitors, of course, but there are also mothers and fathers and sons and daughters. While a Czech diver pursues records, her young daughter snorkels in the shallows. The son of an Italian national-record holder is well on his way to matching his father's tan. There are babies, too, like I've never seen in the water. Naked little infants squawking in the waves. You come this far for this long, everyone comes with.

Alexey was as talented as anyone alive at shrinking the focal length to practically zero. It was his great gift. The thing that made it possible for him to go deeper on one breath than anyone.

At the restaurant, I help Turkey's top female diver, Sahika Ercumen, find some fish on the menu that isn't fried. She's known Alexey since they were teenagers, since he had hair, she says, smiling. 2006, Tenerife. Natalia was there. We were kids, and now he has a baby. They came up together, live in their respective corners of the world, but then, a few times a year, there are events like this one, with this family, where, Ercumen says, it's just about making these memories together. Ercumen had COVID last year, was terrified about how it would react with her asthma, what it would do to her lungs. Over the course of her six dives, she set five new Turkish records.

All gratitude for the annual family reunion is owed to William Trubridge, the founder of Vertical Blue and one of freediving's all-timers. Alexey would ultimately break three of the four world records in the competitive depth disciplines at this year's Vertical Blue, but the fourth is still held by Trubridge, in his specialty discipline, Constant Weight No Fins. No Fins is considered the purest of the dives, as it most resembles the sort of purpose-driven plunges that humans have been taking for thousands of years, to spearfish, to scoop sponges and pearls, to explore the ocean.

Raised in New Zealand, Trubridge moved to Long Island, not far from Dean's Blue Hole, in 2006, to train. Since then, freediving and Vertical Blue have experienced a rapid evolution. By 2010, he had built a world-class competition. Then, in 2013, in just its sixth edition, tragedy struck. An American diver named Nicholas Mevoli experienced a pulmonary hemorrhage caused by barometric pressure and died at a medical center near the blue hole. Still nascent by the standards of most organized sports, freediving has a growing infrastructure in place for better education, better training, and safer competition. When I ask Trubridge what prior accounts of freediving tend to get wrong, he thinks for a moment, then says the sensationalism of it: Some people have only focused on the coughing up blood, the blacking out. That is part of it, sure, and that's a risk that is there. But it's like auto sports: If you were to just focus on the crashes, you wouldn't be telling the story in full.

Easy exploring: The best things to do in Deep Cove | Curated – Daily Hive

Please note: British Columbia is in Step 3 of itsCOVID-19 restart plan. Please adhere to COVID-19 health and safety measures, including physical distancing and frequent hand washing, and wearing a mask or face-covering in public indoor and retail spaces. If you are sick, please stay home.

Located at the edge of North Vancouver, Deep Cove is a stunning waterfront village thats popular with local residents and tourists alike. In addition to lush green trails and open views of Indian Arm, its also a popular destination for movie and TV shoots.

Before diving into everything that the Cove has to offer, its important to know how to get there. The small village offers few options for parking, so driving directly into the area isnt recommended especially during peak summer months.

(Alison Pudsey/Daily Hive)

A good option is public transit. Bus passengers can take the 211 or 212 from Phibbs Exchange directly into Deep Cove. For anyone that does opt to drive, the District of North Vancouver points drivers towards overflow parking lots that can be found before entering the main strip. From there, the heart of Deep Cove is a mere five to 10-minute walk.

As far as outdoor excursions go, Deep Coves claim to fame is Quarry Rock. The popular 3.8 km hike is beginner-friendly (with the right footwear). Sitting at the top of the trail is a stunning view that encompasses Deep Cove, Indian Arm, and the Belcarra mountains.

If youre an experienced hiker seeking something more challenging, look no further than the Baden Powell Trail. The entire trail spans 41 km from Deep Coves Burrard Inlet to West Vancouvers Horseshoe Bay but dont worry, there are shorter hikes to be found within the trail (Quarry Rock included).

The Cove also has no shortage of aquatic activities. Deep Cove Kayak offers rentals, lessons, and even tours on kayaks, standup paddleboard, and surf-ski and dont be surprised to see local residents pull up with their own, either. Keep in mind, walk-in rentals arent accepted at this time and reservations are required.

Its also worth noting that Deep Cove Kayak offers a guided nighttime kayak tour. The experience is held on Fridays between May and October and boasts a completely different experience of Deep Cove.

If youre looking for even more parks, green space, and beachfront, be sure to check out Cates Park. While it technically isnt in Deep Cove, the expansive park is just a short distance away and boasts forest trails, beach areas, and additional access to the water.

Deep Cove has no shortage of eateries and restaurants, with plenty of options at any time of day. The most popular spot, undoubtedly, is Honeys Doughnuts & Goodies. The longstanding institution is beloved for its doughnuts, which are often sought out by celebrities and film stars who frequent Vancouver.

There are also several different options for cafes. Cafe Orso is a European-style cafe that offers a selection of coffees, teas, and alcoholic beverages. Theyre also very popular for their Belgian waffles, which are baked in-house daily and can be served with Nutella, fresh berries, and other toppings.

Bluhouse Market & Cafe offers a wide variety of crepes, smoothies, and plant-forward salads, bowls, and wraps. And Covert Cafe & Market is well known for its cinnamon buns.

Another new, and welcome, addition to the neighbourhood is Dip Co. Delights, which offers Florentine-style sandwiches and a wide selection of European goods.

For more substantial meals, Osaka Sushi and Arms Reach Bistro have both served the Deep Cove community for a number of years. The owners of Arms Reach Bistro are also the same minds behind ingrain, a locally-owned pasta brand that can be found both in restaurants and grocery stores.

And while ittechnically isnt located inside the Cove, Deep Cove Brewery is a noteworthy stop for craft beer, cocktails, and small-batch spirits. There is an impressive selection of food and appetizers and often have local artists performing live during weekends.

If youre looking to get some shopping done, locally-owned and operated Ahoy is well worth the visit. Expect popular name brands such as Nike, Stussy, Patagonia, Reigning Champ, and Comme Des Garcons, as well as plenty of Cove-themed items.

Deep Cove Collective can be found right across the street from Ahoy. Visitors can find a quaint selection of apparel, gifts, and jewelry.

And if you have a sweet tooth, make sure to stop by Sweet as Treats, a candy and gift store with an impressive selection of confections, chocolates, and snacks.

How to find peace of mind during the COVID-19 pandemic’s delta surge | Opinion – Tennessean

Seek help from your primary care doctor or a crisis hotline if youre having intense feelings of depression, particularly suicidal thoughts.

Judith Overton| Guest columnist

Mental health a concern as children return to classrooms

Experts say returning to school in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic will require special care for a childs mental and social development needs.

STAFF VIDEO, USA TODAY

If the past few months have left you feeling stuck in a time warp, youre not alone.

There were a few hopeful weeks in early summer when it seemed that normal activities were resuming in our state and our country. Now we seem to be back where we were a year ago with the COVID-19 pandemic because of the surging delta variant. Were also facing a divisive vaccination debate, and many hospitals are approaching or even above patient capacity.

During the last 18 months, many of us have lost loved ones, jobs or opportunities, and daily routines we relied on. This reinforces that managing our mental health is just as important as our physical health long a fact, but one that the pandemic has brought to the forefront.

Its natural, and even automatic, to feel worry or fear as we navigate the ongoing pandemic. Taking a simple first step like pausing for a deep breath can prevent a domino effect of dread, and help manage your mental health.

I cant overstate the importance of seeking help from your primary care doctor or a crisis hotline if youre having intense feelings of depression, particularly suicidal thoughts. Its also possible to get help using telehealth resources, and many BlueCross BlueShield plans offer talk therapy through the PhysicianNow telehealth platform.

Its also worth noting that depression can look different for everyone. Are you sleeping poorly? Unable to do things that used to be easy?

Stress and anxiety likewise shouldnt be ignored, and adhering to the basics for overall health diet, exercise and rest is one way to help manage them. Focus on introducing one healthy habit at a time into your life. For example, make Tuesdays and Thursdays dedicated healthy meal nights. Or set an alarm on your phone to start your bedtime process at 8 p.m. to be in bed by 9.

Hear more Tennessee voices: Get the weekly opinion newsletter for insightful and thought-provoking columns.

I know many caregivers with young children or senior relatives juggle ever-rotating schedules. Make the most of the time you know youre in control of. Also, dont feel guilty about some things plans with loved ones, folding laundry or unloading the dishwasher that you sometimes have to let go of.

Guilt can weigh more heavily during difficult times; one way I cope is by limiting negativity in my life. Turn off the news at home or on your drive, and park your phone in a different room at night to avoid doomscrolling.

Also, practice mindfulness, gratitude and doing things that refuel you. There are ways to find joy even in times like these. Seek out new experiences and give back to others, regardless of whether theyre in obvious need. The idea I often share is to write down or say one thing youre grateful for each day. This can be during a point in the day when you typically feel stress creeping in.

If you struggle to write for yourself, send a letter or postcard to a loved one. Think about those whove suffered a loss during this pandemic; perhaps theyre nearing an anniversary of the death of someone close. A letter doesnt have to acknowledge this explicitly; just reaching out to let someone know youre thinking about them can speak volumes. And it can help you feel better, too.

All things considered, were in a better place than a year ago. COVID-19 vaccinations are readily available and effective at preventing severe illness, and our shared experiences during this pandemic have moved us even closer to destigmatizing mental health.

If youre struggling or feel stuck when that time warp sensation resurfaces, remember youre not alone and theres no shame in asking for help.

WONDERFUL THINGS: Perfect peace in a troubled world from Jesus – Destin Log

James Calderazzo| The Destin Log

I was sitting in my office when my phone rang. I answered to hear the stressed voice of one of my daughters. She had been in a car accident. Everyone involved was fine, but the car was not drivable, and the accident was her fault. How does a pastor respond in such a situation? Well, this one failed.

Almost immediately I was filled with anxiety. You might describe me as a man who was absent of peace. Going through my mind were thoughts along these lines: How much are the repairs going to cost? How are we going to get by with one car? How much is our insurance going to increase? You get the picture.

At that moment a friend walked in my door. This was someone whom I had ministered to for some years. He was a former convict who had struggled for over two decades with addiction issues. He could tell I was troubled and asked me what was going on. I told him about the accident, and he could hear the frustration and anxiety in my voice. I remember him looking at me with a smile and then asking me a series of questions:

Is God here?

Yes. I know He is, I responded.

Is God in control of this situation?

Being a pastor, I knew the answer, Of course He is.

Does God love you and promise to take care of you?

I hung my head now, Yes. God loves me and promises to care for me. It came slowly, but I began to see in all my thoughts about the accident, God was absent. My friend helped me to fix my mind back on the Lord. And what began to follow was peace. Real peace.

It was a living illustration of these wonderful verses found in Isaiah, You keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock (Is 26:3-4).

Perfect peace. Maybe some of you who are reading this right now are in need of peace. We seem to live in a time defined by discord, anger, enmity, and conflict. Where can we truly find peace? Notice the promise in these verses: perfect peace. Interestingly, the word perfect is not found in the original Hebrew. What it actually reads is: you keep him in peace, peace. In Hebrew a word is often repeated for the purpose of intensification. So, the Lord does not just keep us in peace. He keeps us in peace, peace. Real peace, deep peace, lasting peace, peace that is not transitory or fleeting. But a peace that is durable, sturdy. A peace that can stand even amongst raging storms. Its a God-based peace, a supernatural peace a type of peace that the world cannot understand.

How do we get this deep peace? The verse tells us, from a mind that is stayed on God. Peace that is a condition of our hearts is dependent on the set, or focus, of our minds. Do you want peace in your heart? Then fix your thoughts on the God of the Bible. Keep God in all your thoughts about yourself, in all your thoughts about others, in all your thoughts about work, in all your thoughts about family. Let those thoughts be grounded in God.

It is never foolish to trust in God. It is never foolish to trust in infinite power and infinite goodness and infinite love and infinite wisdom. This is why God wants us to set our minds on Him not to become Bible-scholars but to become God-dependers, to learn to depend more and more on Him in all things at all times.

God is rock-solid reliable. Our verse says that he is the everlasting rock. Some have translated everlasting rock as the rock of ages. Trust in the Lord for He is the Rock of Ages. It is thought that this is the verse where the hymn writer, Augustus Toplady got the title for his hymn, Rock of Ages. Think of the first verse of that hymn, Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee. Cleft is a word we dont use very often. It is the past tense of cleave which means to split. Rock of Ages, split for me. Who is Toplady referring to? Who is Isaiah ultimately telling us to place our trust in? Jesus. Jesus is the Rock who was literally split apart so that we could find shelter and peace in Him. Because Jesus body was broken on the cross, we can know that we are forgiven. We can know that we are loved. We can know that Jesus is with us and for us. We can know, no matter what, our future is secure.

Ultimately that is peace a mind fixed on the reigning, ruling, and steadfastly loving Jesus.

Cellino is using AI and machine learning to scale production of stem cell therapies – TechCrunch

Cellino, a company developing a platform to automate stem cell production, presented today at TechCrunch Disrupt 2021s Startup Battlefield to detail how its system, which combines AI technology, machine learning, hardware, software and yes, lasers! could eventually democratize access to cell therapies. It aims to bring down costs associated with the manufacturing of human cells, while also increasing yields.

Founded by a team whose backgrounds include physics, stem cell biology and machine learning, Cellino operates in the regenerative medicine industry. This space is currently undergoing a revolution, where new developments in gene and cell therapies could lead to breakthrough cures for a number of leading diseases. For example, the use of personalized human retinal cells could be transplanted to halt or reverse age-related macular degeneration, which can cause blindness. But today, such cell therapies are out of reach for most people because the process of cell production hasnt been automated or made scalable and efficient.

Instead, human cells being used now in these clinical trials are mostly being made by hand by scientists who are looking at cells and evaluating using their many years of training and expertise which cells are low quality and need to be removed. They then scrape away those unwanted cells with a pipette tip. The process, as you can imagine, is time-consuming and produces only a small yield. In this manual process, youd see a yield of about 10% to 20% of cells that would be able to pass the final quality assurance tests required for human transplant.

Cellino is working to improve this process in order to produce more cells of higher quality. Its goal is to push the yield to at least 80% over the next three years.

To do so, Cellinos system is automating all the human steps in the production process using machine learning techniques.

To identify which cells are high quality or low quality, the company is collecting large training data sets where its teaching algorithms to make determinations about cell quality based on a variety of factors. This includes the cell morphology meaning, the shape, size and density of cells. Fluorescence-based surface markers can also be used to identify other factors of importance to the line of cells being produced, like the location of proteins on the cell, for example.

By using machine learning and AI to do the identification based on standard and well-accepted biological assays used by the FDA, the system could move away from human annotation and the variability that introduces into the process of human cell production.

After Cellinos software has identified which low-quality cells need to be removed, it then uses a laser to target them. The laser creates large enough cavitation bubbles to kill the cell, but its done in a highly localized way where youre not harming the neighboring cells, as thermal heat does not dissipate to the nearby cells. This is also a more precise technique than the manual method. (Cellinos system has a 5-micron resolution, while cells are 10-15 microns in size). This results in a throughput of about 5,000 cells per minute, which is highly efficient compared with manual techniques.

Over time, this automation and efficiency could bring the cost down from nearly a million dollars per patient, which is what clinicians have to pay today to run a clinical trial, when outsourcing cell production. Cellino aims to get the cost down into the tens of thousands of dollars over time.

By scaling cell production, personalized cell therapies could also help a broader range of patients compared with other techniques relying on banks of stem cells. These arent always genetically diverse samples, leaving smaller ethnic groups out of the progress being made in this space. Banked cells also require recipients to take immunosuppressants, as the cells arent your own and the body may reject them.

The use of lasers is an idea developed by Cellino co-founder and CEO Nabiha Saklayen, who patented an invention in cellular laser editing while at Harvard earning her PhD in Physics. She was encouraged to turn the technology into a startup by her collaborators, who included had leading biologists like George Church and David Scadden.

Not all scientists become entrepreneurs, and I became an entrepreneur because I had an amazing support network around me, notes Saklayen, of the push to join the startup space. She immediately recruited Marinna Madrid, an applied physicist she had worked with for years on the co-invention of laser-based intracellular delivery techniques, as her other co-founder. To gain more mentorship about growing a startup, Saklayen turned to the Boston area startup ecosystem.

I didnt know anything about startups. I wanted to work with people who knew how to build companies, how to commercialize technology, how to build instruments and the Boston ecosystem is fantastic in that way. So I started connecting with lots of people in those early weeks anybody that was in the biotech realm or Harvard Business School, Saklayen explains.

This led her to Cellino co-founder and CTO Mattias Wagner, who had built companies before in the optics and instrumentation space.

Thats how the founding team came together. It was very complementary because Marina and I were co-inventors of the original technology that inspired the platform and Mattias brought this tremendous background in semiconductors and optical instrumentation, says Saklayen.

Since its 2017 founding, Cellino has gone on to raise $16 million in seed funding in a round co-led byThe Engine and Khosla Ventures, with participation from Humboldt Fund and 8VC.

The company is now collaborating with the NIH on compatibility studies. Currently, that means Cellino is making stem cells on its system which its then comparing with the ones made at the NIH that are already being tested in humans for personalized cell therapies for retinal diseases. Cellino later hopes to use its system to address areas like Parkinsons, muscle disorders and skin grafts, among others.

The company wanted to present at TechCrunch Disrupt to share more about what its building and to source new talent.

For me, its about talking about this idea around democratization and industrialization of cell therapies. I really want to get that message out because that is the movement we need to drive over the next decade for all of these cell therapies to be accessible to all patients, says Saklayen.

Cellinos angle is also very unique in the sense that, because we have this automated system to manufacture human cells, our system could make cells for every human being in this country, in the world, she continues. And there are a lot of cell therapy approaches that are looking to use off-the-shelf cells and off-the-shelf therapies, which will only work for certain parts of the population. As the U.S. becomes more diverse, ethnically, we need personalized solutions for everybody.
