Cloud Storage Startup Backblaze IPOs on Little VC and Revenue – Business Insider

Cloud backup and storage service Backblaze debuted on the Nasdaq exchange Thursday, priced at $16 per share and popping 24.38% by the end of the day. But unlike most cloud software startups, it got there without taking on the bonkers levels of venture capital that has become commonplace in the industry. By the closing bell on Friday, Backblaze was trading at $22.04 a share, giving it a market cap of $645.18 million.

Between its founding in 2007 and 2020, San Mateo, California-based Backblaze raised less than $3 million in outside equity, followed by $10 million in convertible notes in August. And regulatory filings show that last year, Backblaze booked a net loss of $6.6 million on revenues of $53.78 million nothing to sneeze at, but it only represents a small piece of a market worth tens of billions.

So what's the motivation for Backblaze going public now? "We're actually hoping this shows that it is possible for companies to successfully become public companies without having to wait as long as some companies are feeling they need to wait today," Gleb Budman, CEO and co-founder of Backblaze, told Insider.

For comparison, DigitalOcean, which offers cloud storage competitive to Backblaze's B2 offering, raised $456.4 million before going public earlier this year. Another competitor in the backup and storage space considering an IPO, Veeam, was funded to the tune of $500 million. And they each far surpassed Backblaze in revenue, reporting $318 million and $1 billion last year, respectively.

Backblaze sells itself as the affordable cloud storage alternative. Its B2 storage service is comparable to that of cloud giants, but is much cheaper. According to Backblaze's website, B2 costs $0.005 per gigabyte of storage each month compared to $0.021 with AWS, $0.017 with Azure, and $0.020 with Google Cloud.

Now fourteen years after its founding, Backblaze believes its established the product and cultural foundation to go public, partially because of B2. Revenue for the service grew 65% year over year, bringing in $14.2 million for the company in 2020.

Backblaze, however, isn't alone in IPOing with limited funding and revenue. Spanx, though in another industry, went public just last month without taking a dime in outside funding. And 16 companies valued at $1 billion or more have gone or are expected to go public in 2021 despite having zero revenue, marking an all-time high since the dot-com boom. On the flip side, other companies like Uber and WeWork, which have each raised billions only to struggle to find business models and turn profits, have shown that VC dollars don't guarantee a road to success.

Backblaze intentionally sought to avoid VC funding, even though it took some over the years, according to Budman. The decision was partially a cultural one, as Budman thought employees would be more motivated to focus on efficiency and the product. It's hard to do so "when you're sitting on a large pile of cash on day one," he said.

Besides making a statement, an IPO provides the opportunity to raise additional funds and invest in the company's products and go-to market strategy. But Budman said he hopes going public "both means a lot and very little" to its employees. Backblaze offers stock options to all of its 228 full-time employees, according to Budman, but the company intends to keep the cultural status quo it built.

"What this doesn't change, is that we're committed to having a great culture. And what it does is hopefully provide us more opportunity to bring more people in to work with us," Budman said.

Apples Business Essentials subscriptions target small businesses that only use Apple – The Verge

This week Apple unveiled another beta program, but instead of offering early previews of software for your Mac, iPhone, or iPad, its a new initiative called Business Essentials. In line with Apples recent shift toward selling services, its a subscription package aimed at small businesses with three different plans and a move that has been anticipated since it acquired the device management platform Fleetsmith a little over a year ago.

Starting at $2.99 per device per month, they can cover employees across a single device, more than one device, or a more expensive plan that covers multiple devices and adds more cloud storage. An AppleCare+ package will be available when it launches full in spring 2022, adding 24/7 phone support, access to training, and on-site repairs from Apple-trained technicians.

Like many other device manage platforms, it streamlines the onboarding process, preinstalled apps, as well as management of security settings like FileVault for disk encryption and Activation Lock to secure devices if theyre lost or stolen. Theres also a new Business Essentials app for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS that puts all of the various settings in one place.

I spoke to Vox Media senior VP of IT, Oumar Sall, who points out that it could be beneficial for startups during periods of high growth. Particularly while dealing with more remote workers, it can help get new employees up and running as quickly as possible even if a business doesnt have the other parts of its network fully formed yet. It could also be helpful for schools if Apples existing School Manager system isnt a good fit.

It also has the advantage of being available from Apple itself. However, its unlikely to challenge mainstays in the industry since, at least so far, it is limited by the number of employees supported, and it isnt available across different platforms. Theres also the question of how exporting data works if a company wants to leave iCloud, endpoint security management, and the other issues that can crop up later.

Jamf is one of those companies, as it provides device management to a number of organizations, including Vox Media. On an earnings call Friday after Apples announcement, CEO Dean Hager said that he expects the service will help improve Apples built-in management tools that Jamf also relies on, without competing directly with many features Jamf provides. If Business Essentials helps kickstart adoption among small businesses or startups, it gives them a basis to buy even more Apple devices and services as they grow, even if they eventually move to more on-premises support or another provider altogether.

IBM creates largest ever superconducting quantum computer – New Scientist

IBM claims it has produced a 127-qubit quantum computer. This is over double the size of comparable machines made by Google and the University of Science and Technology of China

IBM has created the worlds largest superconducting quantum computer, surpassing the size of state-of-the-art machines from Google and from Chinese researchers. Previous devices have demonstrated up to 60 superconducting qubits, or quantum bits, working together to solve problems, but IBMs new Eagle processor more than doubles that by stringing together 127.

Several approaches are being pursued by teams around the world to create a practical quantum computer, including superconductors and entangled photons, and it remains unclear which will become the equivalent of the transistor which powered the classical computing revolution.

In 2019, Google announced that its Sycamore processor, which uses the same superconducting architecture that IBM is working with, had achieved quantum supremacy the name given to the point at which quantum computers can solve a problem that a classical computer would find impossible. That processor used 54 qubits, but has since been surpassed by a 56 and then 60-qubit demonstration with the Zuchongzhi superconducting processor from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Hefei.

IBMs 127-qubit Eagle processor now takes the top spot as the largest, and therefore theoretically most powerful, superconducting quantum computer to be demonstrated. Each additional qubit represents a significant step forward in ability: unlike classical computers, which rise in power in a linear fashion as they grow, one additional qubit effectively doubles a quantum processors potential power.

Canadian company D-Wave Systems has sold machines for some years that consist of thousands of qubits, but they are widely considered to be very specific machines tailored towards a certain algorithm called quantum annealing rather than fully programmable quantum computers. In recent years, much progress in quantum computing has focused on superconducting qubits, which is one of the main technologies that Google, USTC and IBM are backing.

Bob Sutor at IBM says that breaking the 100-qubit barrier is more psychological than physical, but that it shows the technology can grow. With Eagle, were demonstrating that we can scale, that we can start to generate enough qubits to get on a path to have enough computation capacity to do the interesting problems. Its a stepping stone to bigger machines, he says.

However, it is difficult to compare the power of the IBM chip with previous processors. Both Google and USTC used a common test to assess such chips, which was to simulate a quantum circuit and sample random numbers from its output. IBM claims to have created a more programmable and adaptable processor, but has yet to publish an academic paper setting out its performance or abilities.

Peter Leek at the University of Oxford says it is tempting to assess performance entirely on the qubit count, but that there are other metrics that need to be looked at none of which has yet been released for Eagle. Its definitely positive, its good that theyre making something with more qubits, but ultimately it only becomes useful when the processor performs really well, he says.

Scott Aaronson at the University of Texas at Austin has similar reservations about judging the importance of the new processor at this stage, saying that more detail is needed. I hope that information will be forthcoming, he says.

IBM has said that it hopes to demonstrate a 400-qubit processor next year and to break the 1000-qubit barrier the following year with a chip called Condor. At that point, it is expected that a limit on expansion will be reached that requires quantum computers to be created from networks of these processors strung together by fibre-optic links.

The latest breakthrough in the field of quantum computing could pave the way for complex simulations that tell us about the earliest moments of the universe and more.

A team of researchers from the University of Waterloo, Canada, claims to have performed the first ever simulation of baryons (a highly complex type of subatomic particle) on a quantum computer.

To achieve this goal, the researchers paired a traditional computer with a quantum machine in the cloud, and developed from scratch a quantum algorithm that was resource-efficient enough to allow the system to shoulder the workload.

Until now, computers have only been able to simulate the composite elements of baryons (which are made up of three quarks), but the research paper shows its possible to perform detailed quantum simulations with many baryons.

Although the science is complex, the broad significance is this: scientists will be able to simulate aspects of physics completely out of reach for traditional supercomputers.

According to the researchers, the breakthrough represents a landmark step towards overcoming the limitations of classical computing and allowing the massive potential of quantum computers to be realized.

This is an important step forward - it is the first simulation of baryone on a quantum computer ever, said Christine Muschik, faculty member at the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC). Instead of smashing particles in an accelerator, a quantum computer may one day allow us to simulate these interactions that we use to study the origins of the universe and so much more.

More specifically, researchers will be able to simulate complex lattice gauge theories, which describe the physics of reality. So-called non-Abelian gauge theories are said to be particularly attractive candidates for quantum simulation, as they relate to the stability of matter in the universe.

While the most powerful traditional computers are able to simulate simple non-Abelian gauge theories, only a quantum computer (as has now been proven) can perform the complex simulations necessary to unpack the inner workings of the universe.

Whats exciting about these results for us is that the theory can be made so much more complicated, added Jinglei Zhang, another researcher at the IQC. We can consider simulating matter at higher densities, which is beyond the capability of classical computers.

The security agencies need to be trained to penetrate these online systems to trace the sources of funding and purpose so that the preventive steps can be taken, Duggal further said.

The dark net also provides self-destructive mailboxes and proxy servers where people can use fake IDs. It definitely makes it difficult to prove a particular charge and there is a requirement for amendment to the Information Technology Act and Evidence Act, Duggal further said.

The TOR, the most popular with over two millions daily users, uses the onion routing method which is a layered technology that routes traffic through the established layers to conceal the identities of the users.

On November 13, the issue was comprehensively discussed in a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with all stakeholders, and it was learnt that the government is mulling to introduce a bill in the winter session of Parliament to regulate the dealing of cryptocurrencies in India.

Officials have however said that Indian agencies are technically sound and skilled to penetrate into the dark net browsers and they have successfully tracked many cases of narco trade and hawala transactions.
