Opposition Parties ‘Surprised’ by Lack of Encryption Amid Cyber Attack – VOCM

The Opposition parties say theyre surprised that the personal information accessed during the recent cyberattack was not protected by encryption software.

That was revealed during Wednesdays briefing on the attack that affects thousands of patients and staff of Eastern Health and Labrador-Grenfell Health.

Both the Tories and NDP held media briefings this morning to discuss the situation.

NDP interim leader Jim Dinn notes the simplest online transactions are safeguarded by encryption, which scrambles algorythms, making it harder to hack.

He notes online payments, for example, do have that extra layer of protection, adding hes concerned that wasnt the case here.

Meanwhile, PC interim leader David Brazil says while the province wont say which world-class experts theyre dealing with, its curious that local firm Verafin isnt among them.

He says hes surprised and disappointed that the government didnt reach out to Verafin, or at least consult them on the best immediate course of action, given their status in the world of cyber-security.

The government says anyone who registered at a hospital in the Eastern Health region in the past 14 years could be affected by the privacy breach.

It goes back nine years for anyone in the Labrador-Grenfell Health region.

Officials are urging people to check bank accounts, change passwords and consult with credit reporting agencies to ensure they have not been victimized.

The Leader of the provincial PC Party says the primary objective right now is about addressing the backlog in the provinces healthcare system.

David Brazil says the investigation into the cyber attack should be left to professionals both nationally and internationally, but with first Snowmaggeddon, then the COVID-19 pandemic, and now the cyber attack, the backlogs in healthcare must be addressed.

He says right now, the Opposition is not here to oppose in any way, shape or form.

(Brazil explains that they are there to support whatever needs to be done with the health authorities and for government. He says if they want to go back into the House of Assembly to discuss additional funds to ensure people have access to treatments like cancer and cardiovascular interventions.

He says their priority is to work with all the entities involved to make sure the healthcare system gets up and running as normal as it can.

The PC Party leader says theyll get back to politics when its time, but right now its about ensuring the people of the province are safe and have access to healthcare.

Yoga and Consciousness: A Meditation to Access Your Highest Self – Healthline

Yoga is more than just asana the practice of physical poses. Its a means of accessing our infinite possibilities and power.

You can hear a voice in your head reading this sentence right now. Trippy, right? Maybe go back and read that again.

That voice you hear is your mind. Your minds job is to receive information through your senses and either send impulses to your body to respond to this information or store it for later use.

But who is the one listening to these words right now? That silent observer and listener of your mind, according to yoga philosophy, is your consciousness.

Consciousness, the mind, and the body are separate entities. The mind and body are limited by the confines of their physical nature, while consciousness is all-pervading.

Its said that consciousness is the light that emanates from within the body. Some people call this our soul or higher self. Meditation is a tool that we can use to better access our higher self our soul self (atman), also known as our pure conscious state.

Its important to understand that were able to perceive reality beyond the physical. This idea alone expands our awareness past the ego toward the infinite nature of our consciousness.

After we understand that atman is beyond mind and body, we can test this theory through pratyahara (i.e., cutting off our senses). For example, when we limit our senses by closing our eyes or blocking out hearing, were essentially starving the mind of information.

We notice that were still sentient and aware even when the mind is empty, which shows us that consciousness and the mind are indeed separate. This state is called samadhi, and yogis practice their whole lives to stay in this space at all times.

Even taking 10 minutes a day to enter a state of samadhi is deeply beneficial for mental well-being. We live in a world that tells us our worth is equal to our productivity. This state of constant doing can burn us out and leave us feeling disconnected from our true selves.

When we take time to sit in meditation, we return back to our center, are able to truly rest, and remember that we are not our work, our ego, or even our minds. Were simply beautiful, infinite observers of reality.

Samadhi can also positively affect our relationships. The practice of living through the state of samadhi during our daily lives is called mindful living. When were engaging with the world more mindfully, were in a neutral state of awareness.

This state is how we can make decisions that are based on love, logic, and patience, as opposed to making decisions from our mind, which operates from impatience, or emotions that are fleeting and usually skew our judgment.

If everyone practiced meditation to access consciousness, it could help unify humanity. According to yoga theory, theres one source for all of our consciousness the Divine. We can see this when we notice the collective consciousness.

Have you ever thought about someone and then they called a few minutes later? Did you know that several inventions, including that of the wheel, were created in separate parts of the world around the same time before humans could communicate with others who were so far away?

These examples show us that were all more connected than we believe or behave, and this is because were all connected by the common thread of divine consciousness.

Heres a five-step meditation you can do at home to access your consciousness:

This is a practice. Its OK if you arent able to accomplish all five steps the first time. Continue to be compassionate with yourself, and try again tomorrow. The more you come to this practice, the easier it will get.

Meditation is truly a balm to soothe our tired minds and bodies in this chaotic world, for the soul never tires, the soul is forever.

Government Scientists Recover Hypothesized Crystal From Deep Within Earth – VICE

Image:AlexLMX via Getty Images

ABSTRACT breaks down mind-bending scientific research, future tech, new discoveries, and major breakthroughs.

Scientists have recovered a new mineral, long hypothesized but never seen, from some 900 kilometers below the Earths surface.

Its called Davemaoite: made of calcium, silicon and oxygen (calcium silicate, or CaSiO3), it takes a crystal lattice-shape (known as a perovskite) and is the first compound of its kind to be identified in the lower mantle, the deepest layer of the earths geology outside of its core.

It was spotted by a team of researchers who came together from the University of Nevada Las Vegas, Florida State University, California Institute of Technology, Argonne National Laboratory, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and detailed their findings in a peer-reviewed report in the journal Science on Thursday.

They located the compound in a mined diamond that originated in the Earths lower mantle using a powerful x-ray with precision down to the micrometer that can send signals through rocks, said Oliver Tschauner, first author on the study and research professor in mineralogy and crystallography at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Soon after spotting it, Tschauner and his team reported the finding to the International Mineralogical Association, which has officially recognized it as a new mineral.

The findings offer new evidence of the existence of a mineral thats been speculated about for years, but never sampled.

This process took more than a year, Tschauner told Motherboard in an email. The deep Earth is not directly accessible. We have seismic data, geochemical data from rocks that may have originated there, we can perform experiments at the pressures and temperatures of the deep Earth but we had no actual samples of real minerals from that deep. The inclusions in diamond provide this missing information.

The compound was found trapped within a diamond located in Orapa, Botswanawhich was excavated and deposited in the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. Its retrieval alone is worthy of scientific admiration, per an independent commentary on the papers findings, also published in Science on Thursday. Calcium Silicate perovskite is unquenchable, meaning it can only maintain its structural characteristics under the high pressure conditions of the lower mantle. The diamond it was found within kept it from changing structure in its travel hundreds of kilometers up to the earths outer layers, but it isnt likely to be retrieved in other conditions in the future.

Tschauner notes that the lower mantle maintains a pressure that is 24,000 times that of the earths atmosphere, and is thus home to elements that could quite literally never exist in ambient conditions, outside the crust. Davemaoite, for instance, would turn into glass instantly in the atmosphere, he said.

We reconstructed the pressure-temperature path that the diamond and its inclusions took and we concluded that the diamond grew somewhere between 660 and 900 kilometers deep, Tschauner wrote.

The diamond that the researchers pulled out of the earth brought a number of trace minerals up with itthis type of structure is referred to as a garbage can, by crystal chemists, because its capable of holding a slew of other minerals within it.

Tschauner believes Davemaoite constitutes five to seven per cent of the earths lower mantlenot much, he says, but he notes that it plays an important role in the overall heat levels of the earths interior because it decays radioactively (radioactive decay is responsible for one-third of the inner earths heat, Tschauner said).

After identifying the mineral, Tschauner swiftly named it after his once-postdoctoral supervisor, Dave (Ho-kwang) Mao, a prominent geophysicist. He told Motherboard he hopes to continue studying the complex processes occuring far below our feet.

An element like calcium behaves differently at 200,000 times the atmosphere pressure, he said. How does this different chemistry control processes inside the Earth?

5 amazing science facts that will blow your mind – India Today

Children both younger and older -- are curious by nature and science is one such subject where people learn and explore, putting their minds to test and play. Fun facts about everyday life and the great mysteries of the universe always fascinate us, no matter our age.

Here are a few lesser-known science facts that will excite and interest children and adults as they learn more about the subject:

Neutron stars are the remnants of giant stars that died in a fiery explosion known as a supernova. Neutron stars and their density are usually measured in solar masses.

They have a mass of about twice that of the sun (bigger than 10 suns) and are the smallest and dense stars known to exist in the universe.

If we dig up one teaspoon of mass from a neutron star, the mass will weigh around 6 billion tons which proves how dense the star can be!

There are certain metals like potassium, sodium, lithium, rubidium, and cesium that are reactive, and they tarnish instantly when exposed to air and explode when dropped in water!

The alkali metals have only one electron on their outer shell, making them ultra-keen to pass on this unwanted passenger to another element via bonding.

As a result, they form compounds with other elements so readily that they do not exist independently in nature.

Yes! This is caused by tectonic plates which are in constant motion, driven by currents that rise and fall under them.

Hawaii remains in the center of the Pacific plate and every year due to this constant motion, Hawaii is slowly and steadily heading to the North American platform, back to Alaska.

Like many other hyperaccumulating plants, sunflowers remove metal compounds from deep in the soil and transport them into the stem, leaves and, flower head.

They can take up high concentration of toxic materials and are adept at extracting radioactive metals from a particular place in a period of 3-4years.

Hyperaccumulating plants are used to clear up waste during a process called phytoremediation.

Cockroaches are infamous for their tenacity and are often pointed to as the most possible nuclear war refugees.

Due to their open circulatory system, and the fact that they breathe through little holes in each of their body segments, they are not dependent on the mouth or head to breathe.

The roach only dies because without a mouth, it cannot drink water and dies of thirst.

Encouraging children to learn and discover new things through science everyday will develop their knowledge and practice many skills.

And not just children, adults will also always benefit from learning new facts and gaining new information on a day-today basis!

Albuquerque artist brings figures to life with a deep look into the Native soul – Albuquerque Journal

Editors note:

The Journal continues the once-a-month series From the Studio with Kathaleen Roberts, as she takes an up-close look at an artist.

Primary strokes plunge deep into the souls of the urban figures captured in Everton Tsosies paintings.

These Native men smile through gritted teeth, split in two and arm bump within a cityscape ravaged by Covid, drugs and alcohol.

Santa Fes Ellsworth Gallery recently hosted the Albuquerque natives first solo exhibition in Urban Native.

The Din artist grew up in the International District, where crack addicts smoked in his backyard.

My mom used to tell me to draw because I was an obnoxious little kid; I was hyper and it was to keep me focused, he said. Shed tell me to sit down and draw a horse.

I was always having to deal with gangs and violence, alcohol and drugs, Tsosie continued. My mom was really good, telling me to walk by.

(

In school, he was the kid everyone asked to create event posters. Soon his teachers began to notice. In second grade, one dedicated a portion of the classroom as his little studio. He was already working in abstraction.

She set up a little studio gallery, like a little show for me, Tsosie said. I thought it was cool; I dressed up in a little suit. I sold a painting. I felt like I was already rich; it was $15 or $20.

He started college at the old TVI (now Central New Mexico Community College), taking both math and art before transferring to the University of New Mexico. Good in math, he started out thinking he would major in both engineering and art. He graduated with a BFA in painting and drawing in 2018.

I didnt want to be in the ghetto no more, he said. What changed my mind was I was sitting in class and hearing everyone talk about Popular Mechanics and being very sophisticated with their language. I was looking out the window and daydreaming and I just couldnt take it.

Tsosie has worked in construction jobs and at a Circle K gas station, where a cowboy encouraged his dream to go to New York, inspired by stories of the abstract expressionists Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. He bought a plane ticket in 2018 and lived in the East Villages Alphabet City for three years. He supported himself by constructing stretcher bars for an artist and working as a security guard.

It was intense, he said. It made me into a new person. I was totally Southwest, totally Albuquerque.

The move inspired him to paint on larger canvasses; some as big as eight feet tall. One day, the rent was due and Tsosie needed the money. He gathered 16 paintings and sold them all in a park.

He returned to New Mexico that year at the behest of his mother and the pandemic.

I just felt like if anything would happen to my Mom, Id rather be in New Mexico than New York, he said.

Tsosies current work begins and ends with the fervor of energy he channels when attacking the canvas.

The Breath-taking Voyage to the Unknown encapsulates his vision of an urban Indian.

Nobody knows what unknown is, Tsosie said. That word came up lately because of the Covid virus. Were in a twilight feeling. On the side is thunder; the skys not blue, its yellow.

A stick figure to the left bumps the figures arm in a virus-fueled form of interaction.

Theres always this stoicism in the stereotypes of Native people, Tsosie continued. I wanted to portray him as being happy in a time thats unknown. I think that stoicism is why people dont talk to us. I think (we) have a fierce look.

The Miracle in the Sun combines issues impacting Native Americans: alcoholism, uranium mining polluting reservation water and Covid-19.

We still dont have running water on the reservation, Tsosie said.

For him, Vital is a message of preparation for whatever comes next.

I like to work with dual personalities, he said. One being more excited than the other; when theres moments of isolation, some absurd person comes out.

Last year, Tsosie took the two-dimensional best in classification award at the Virtual Indian Market with his painting The Last of the Pure. The work called attention to the Navajo Nations struggle for clean water.

In Santa Fe, it started a lot of talk and brought me more exposure, he said.

It also brought him his first online platform, where he sold four or five paintings.

I got a check and was able to pay my rent, he said. I dont have to work construction no more.

Avision to debut with first album ‘In My Mind’ on Maceo Plex’s Ellum Audio – The Groove Cartel

Avision just announced his debut 13-track long album,In My Mindplanned for the release on the 9th of December on Maceo Plexs Ellum Audio.

Avision grew up in New York Citys thriving club scene and is now part of a new generation of techno artists redefining the genre. In just a few years, the American has established himself as a staple on labels such as Drumcode, Machine, and We Are The Brave. His hard-hitting beats have found their way into the record collections of DJs such as Adam Beyer, Maceo Plex, and Chris Liebing. Simultaneously, he has performed at venues such as The Brooklyn Mirage and Time Warp in New York, as well as festivals such as Elrow, The BPM Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival, and Dockyards. Now hes released In My Mind, a 13-track album thats a widescreen artistic statement.

Im truly proud to share In My Mind with the world, as I feel like this is another side of music that people havent heard from me. This album touches on a little bit of everything, and I wanted it to represent where Im from. 90% of the album was written during the time we couldnt be ourselves and do what we love, but I turned that frustration and disbelief into an album with emotion and meaning. I couldnt be happier with the final outcome, and I hope everyone enjoys it. Avision

The album opens with Real Talk, which jumps right into a lush wave of Detroit-style techno with a hint of hi-tek soul. With a typically impassioned vocal, Robert Owens, the legendary house vocalist, lights up the deep, driving house drums on Cut The Rope. With its oversized hi-hats, nimble bassline, and chattery claps, No Disco keeps the energy levels high, while Baby traps you in metallic techno loops with a playful vocal sample. Ground Rule, an atmospheric spoken word interlude about NYC, follows the bright lights of lead single Contrast and grinding peak time weapon In My Mind.

The albums second half begins with Xanders far-sighted cosmic pads on Ill Take You, and immediately transports you to another world. The tense synth loops of interplanetary techno cut Your Soul and hands-in-the-air trance energy on Where I Want To Be are both filled with angst. All Night, a monstrous wall of rich synth sound over big drums, and Lost Symmetry, a more dreamy melodic vibe built on tumbling breakbeats, then relieves the pressure. Over eight minutes of cantering techno and epic synth work, In Your World closes on an upbeat note.

In My Mind is a well-crafted and daring album that pushes melodic techno in unexpected directions.

Increase Health and Peace of Mind with Feng Shui and Bach Flowers – Boothbay Register

I have dubbed my good friend Jane Cheema, the Queen of Feng Shui and the Sage of Bach Flower Remedies. Back when I was teaching a program on resilience in the corporate world, I often used Jane as an example of someone with incredible resilience. Someone who could take difficult situations and not only turn them to her advantage but grow and thrive from them. Due to her husbands work, Jane moved around the world eighteen times in as many years while rearing three amazing children.

She was determined to make the most of her extraordinary lifestyle and always found things to learn and courses to take wherever she landed. During one of her many moves, this one to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, she began a long-distance course in Interior Design from New York School of Design. This led her into the world of Feng Shui, and she found the perfect Master to study with in Malaysia. Feng Shui is the ancient oriental art of the placement of things to ensure good energy or good luck in the home and your place of work.

Feng means wind and Shui means water. The flow and movement of them constitutes good Feng Shui and this translates to good relationships, health, vitality, and feelings of well-being. In Feng Shui you use a tool called the Bagua that visually divides a room up into nine different parts each of which addresses certain areas in our lives: wealth, fame, love, family, health, children, knowledge, career, and friends. By clearing any clutter in each area of the room and paying attention to the placement of objects and use of colors one can bring harmony and well-being into the room, the entire house and ultimately into our energy field and our bodies.

The first time I entered Janes house many years ago, it felt like floating into another world. The positive energy was palpable, and my eyes were met with a feast of visual delights in every nook and cranny. I had never heard of Feng Shui at that time, but I knew there was something unusual going on here and as usual Jane was willing to share her knowledge. I have used Feng Shui in my most recent home and I must admit after moving here four years ago I can only say that every room in this house makes me smile!

Bach Flower Remedies were discovered by Jane during another move, this one to London, England. Bach Flower Remedies are part of a homeopathic system of healingdeveloped by Dr. Bach who believed that a persons state of mind, personality traits, moods and temperament were often the cause of illness. He understood very early on that an imbalance of our physical and mental equilibrium could not only cause disease but slow down or even hinder recovery.

Western medicine has finally caught up with this way of understanding the causes of many of our major diseases and medical conditions. I very often remind my students that dis-ease in the body eventually causes disease.Janes interest and a deep understanding of these concepts led her to study with a teacher in England for three years and eventually earn a diploma from the Bach Center in Boston, MA.

I can not tell you the number of times over the years when I have gotten myself out of balance over lifes difficult times that I have run to Jane for another round of Bach Flower Remedies. They kept me going during my daughters divorce and custody battles. They helped one of my granddaughters through a traumatic first love breakup. In general, they lessen anxiety, grief, feelings of being overwhelmed, depression and fatigue.

The 38 Bach Flower Remedies bring balance to the emotions that are common to all human-kind. Luckily, they were approved in the US by the FDA in 1981 and the understanding and availability of these remedies have been spreading in our country ever since.

In todays stress filled world I think they should be a staple in everyones tool kit for health and well-being. I have been lucky enough to have Jane as a friend and she has been more than willing to share her special gifts with me. Jane has offered many workshops in our area over the years, and I have again asked her to share her gifts with anyone who might be interested.

Jane will join me on November 20th for a Feng Shui De-Cluttering and Creating Sacred Spaces Workshop and November 21st for a Bach Flower Workshop here in Boothbay Harbor, Maine.

How Hanif Abdurraqib Cuts Through the Noise – The New York Times

Also, his face is on a building now. Theres a brightly colored mural on East Main Street, not far from his house, that looks like it glows in the twilight.

Im visible enough for three lifetimes at this point, Abdurraqib said. At least for my own good, for what I can emotionally handle.

When he says he likes to mind his own business, he explained, hes describing an effort to preserve his mental and emotional energy, keeping his focus tight because he has trouble just dipping a toe into something. Recently, for example, he realized he had never had smores, and since he has a fire pit in front of his house (he had the grass taken out because he didnt want to mow it), he decided it was time to try them. So he Googled the best way to make smores. Three hours later, he looked up and it was dark, he said, and he was still learning about the history of the graham cracker.

The best parts of my work hone that impulse and thread it through some, hopefully, nuanced and clear articulation of narrative, Abdurraqib said. But the part that people dont see is the smores situation.

His criticism and essays are infused with this, but also with social commentary, memoir, pop culture, and always with poetry. Even the structure of his books sometimes takes a poetic slant, like a chapter in A Little Devil In America called Fear: A Crown, where the last line of each stanza echoes the first line of the next.

Little Devil is a book of celebration, but it began as one about the cultural appropriation of Black performance. Roughly halfway through writing it, Abdurraqib said, he realized he needed to focus instead on lifting up the work he found so thrilling.
