Bayer and Microsoft partner to build new cloud-based digital tools – IT Brief New Zealand

Bayer has partnered with Microsoft to build new cloud-based digital tools and data science solutions for agriculture and adjacent industries.

The strategic partnership aims to bring new infrastructure and foundational capabilities to accelerate innovation, boost efficiency and support sustainability across value chains.

Bayer says agriculture and agribusinesses today benefit from a wide range of digital tools and data-powered insights through platforms such as Bayer's Climate FieldView, which is used today on more than 180 million farming acres across more than 20 countries. But the company says there is still work to do when it comes to optimising the entire food, feed, fuel and fibre value chain and its use of precious natural resources required to power the planet while ensuring broader efforts to combatclimate change.

Under the new agreement, Bayer will work with Microsoft to co-develop new solutions that address critical industry scenarios such as farming operations, sustainable sourcing, manufacturing and supply chain improvement, and ESG monitoring and measurement.

The companies plan to achieve this by developing the go-forward infrastructure for digital farming solutions and data science capabilities. These new solutions and capabilities will be available to businesses from startups to global enterprises in agriculture and adjacent industries for use in their offerings. Bayer will also migrate its digital farming core capabilities to the new infrastructure for its customer-facing solutions.

The partnership builds upon a long-standing relationship between Bayer and Microsoft and a shared commitment to data privacy, cybersecurity and customer trust.

"This partnership comes at a unique point in time when increased innovation is sorely needed across the food and fibre value chain," says Bayer member of the board of management and president of Crop Science, Liam Condon.

"As we cope with an ongoing global pandemic, fragile supply chains and the continuing climate catastrophe, status quo will not suffice. We need collaboration, shared vision and action," he says.

"For those reasons, Bayer and Microsoft are taking action to make a positive impact, both through our collaboration and by offering off-the-shelf infrastructure and digital capabilities for other companies to address the enormous challenges facing our society."

Jeremy Williams, head of The Climate Corporation and Bayer Digital Farming Solutions, says, "As agriculture and technology entrepreneurs and organisations work to advance the security and sustainability of the value chain, supporting farmers at its foundation, collaboration is required."

"Bayer is pioneering digital innovation within agriculture. Microsoft is setting the standard in trusted, global cloud solutions. Together, we caninnovate and implement as a team to deliver the food, feed, fibre and fuel needed to power our planet," he says.

Microsoft corporate vice president, Azure Global Industry, Ravi Krishnaswamy, says like every industry, farming and the food sector are undergoing rapid digital transformation.

"We're excited to partner with Bayer to accelerate this transformation byhelping them increase the adoption of precision and sustainable agriculture techniques using data-driven insights and the power of Microsoft Azure," he says.

This partnership is a significant, strategic step forward in accomplishing Bayer's target of 100-percent digitally enabled sales in the Crop Science division by 2030 and accelerating its ability to deliver outcomes-based, digitally enabled solutions to customers.

Elizabeth Holmes aims to undercut prosecutions claim of deception

Elizabeth Holmestestified in theTheranosfraud trial Monday that the companys blood-testing technology performed well in early studies with drug makers such asMerck,Astra Zeneca, andBristol Myers Squibb. The line of questioning by the defense fielded with slow, steady replies from Holmes was meant to rebut testimony by prosecution witnesses suggesting the company sent falsified reports on validation testing by drug companies to investors. Holmes also countered testimony from aPfizerdirector, Shane Weber, who told jurors that Theranos replies to his technical questions were at times deflective or evasive.

By calling Holmes to testify, her lawyers are betting that she will be able cast doubt on prosecutors narrative that she deliberately misled investors and the companys potential clients. The big question is how she will hold up under cross examination.

Biotechs big data problem is all too human

advertisement

As biological datasets have exploded in size, biotechs need data scientists to process their plentiful petabytes. But many are struggling to hire enough researchers with the computational know-how needed for the job. Executives believe the gap might [become] fourfold unless they start acting now, Parag Patel, a partner atMcKinsey and Companyfocusing on the life sciences industry, toldSTAT. Part of the problem is supply and demand: There are only so many top-tier data scientists, and pharma is competing for them against companies likeGoogle,Apple, andFacebookthat cannot only pay more, but are often more data-proficient, too. It can get frustrating just cleaning up dirty data, said Neal Cheng, a data scientist who left biotech to work at eBay.Read more about the biotech brain crunch in our colleagueAngus Chens new story.

Verilys clinical trials business leans into data

At theSTATSummitlast week, Katie spoke withVerilys leaders about their plans for their clinical trials infrastructure, just one arm of the life science companys sprawling and sometimes unfocused business.Amy Abernethy, who joined theAlphabetsubsidiary over the summer after championing real-world data and evidence at theFDAas principal deputy commissioner, described her next steps as president of clinical trials platforms. Practically speaking, we are going to focus on building longitudinal datasets that can be put to use for understanding the contours of illness, said Abernethy, adding that such data could be used to test multiple different treatments simultaneously. Abernethy said the company hopes to create a vast repository combining real-world data, medical records, and traditional clinical trial data. Mario has moredetails.

The dream of data-sharing in 2030

By the end of this decade, publichealthresponse and preparedness will be driven by access to real-time data. In this day and age, that seems like a fairly basic desire. But it is among many distant goals that made it onto anew interoperability wish listcompiled by theOffice of the National CoordinatorforHealthIT. To help guide its policy roadmap, ONC asked providers and other stakeholders to list outcomes they hope to achieve through enhanced data interoperability by 2030. The agency received more than 700 responses. Among the other priorities on the list: Patients and doctors will be able to compare the costs of drugs, tests, and procedures online before the bill comes in.

Epics sepsis alerts skyrocketed during the pandemic

A general rule for AI models is that they should be trained on data from the kind of patients they are likely to see in real clinical settings. But what happens when the AI encounters a fundamental change, like the onset of Covid-19? Anew studyof a sepsis algorithmdeveloped byEpic Systemsfound that the number of alerts it generated in two dozen hospitals jumped 43% in the first three weeks after Covid-19 hit. The study by researchers at theUniversity of Michigandid not measure the accuracy of the alerts, but pointed out the increased volume may contribute to alert fatigue and prove detrimental at a time of constrained resources. The finding also points to the need for careful monitoring and governance of AI algorithms after they are implemented.

Meanwhile, clinical predictive tools continue to be adopted around the country, asnew survey datafrom theCollege of Healthcare Information Management Executivesshows. In the last year, the percentage of surveyed acute care organizations with predictive tools integrated into clinician workflows increased from 44% to 55% using a mix of homegrown tools along with those from EHRs and third parties. Among ambulatory care providers, adoption was at 52%, and at 40% in long-term post-acute care facilities.

Who are the current generation of Chief Data Officers? – ComputerWeekly.com

This is a guest blogpost by Peter Jackson, Chief Data and Analytics Officer at Exasol.

The growing mainstream appreciation for quality data and its resulting insights has made the Chief Data Officer (CDO) role more acclaimed than ever. There is now a CDO in almost two thirds (65%) of companies a huge jump since 2012 (12%).

The CDO understands the processes and drivers behind success based on data making them distinct from the CIO. They provide a central point of responsibility and accountability for business clarity, efficiency, and performance and play an increasingly important role in shaping and influencing the strategic direction of a company.

As this role evolves, Exasol spoke to 250 active CDOs from across the UK, the US and Germany to find out more about these individuals and their experiences. One promising finding is that the role is opening C-Suite doors to women who have been overlooked for senior executive roles for many decades. Of the CDOs we spoke to, 26% identified as female and 73% male slightly bucking the IT industrys gender talent gap. For example, when looking at the wider gender gap found across the technology workforce, 19% are female, whilst for data science roles in general, as few as 15% are women.

Commenting on this trend, talent specialists for C-Suite appointments, Savannah Group, told us at Exasol, Organisations love to hire female talent. There are some incredible female CDOs and they are able to command a premium and cherry pick and shape the role more. Its an amazing time to be a female CDO!

Another surprise we uncovered in our research is that todays generation of CDOs are strikingly young. According to M&A Executive Search, the average age of a typical C-suite member is 56, yet the majority of the CDOs we spoke to (55%) were between the age of 25-34 when they were first appointed to the role. Interestingly, 18% of the German respondents we spoke to were between 18-24 when they took on the role more than double the number from the UK and the USA that were in that age bracket.

This more diverse pool of talent is encouraging as its not always easy for companies to find candidates. UK government research found that almost half of businesses (46%) have struggled to hire for roles that require data skills.

The opportunity for change

Diversity isnt just about demographics, however. Its also about having a diverse skillset, which is increasingly important in tech, particularly in data science.

As you might expect, 73% of the CDOs we spoke to had come from a technical background, and 69% say that most people in their teams are from a technical background too. But businesses suffering from tunnel vision and only hiring CDOs from purely technical backgrounds are potentially missing out.

Diversity is crucial when liberating data, as well as improving data accessibility and literacy across all levels of the organisation. If we concentrate too muchon STEM in education, then well have people who understand the numbers and stats, but they wont necessarily have the skills to articulate the meaning of that data, turn it into actionable insights or communicate next steps around those insights to the business.

Derek Danois, CDO at GE Healthcare, for example, has seen real benefits from employing a diverse team. I have a combination of people on my team. A physician, someone with a healthcare IT background and another with marketing background and MBA, he said. This makes for great conversation between them and a cross pollination of ideas. A marketing background is a good thing as we have to communicate across a number of business functions, and they are a strong liaison to the commercial part of the business to gather the data analysis they need. And they are someone that is credible at the table, for example, when discussing customer engagement.

The CDO role is no longer simply about governing data its about liberating it. Transforming data from a confusing, gated asset into an open, useful tool, accessible and actionable to everyone is realised on the top line (revenue) and bottom line (cost reduction and efficiency).

Its exactly for this reason that it will be exciting to see the impact that this generation of CDOs, and the next, will have on business as we know it as organisations open their minds to new candidates.

Successions Justine Lupe and Zoe Winters on Being the Roy Familys Arm Candy – Vanity Fair

In What It Takes, the Roy family goes to Washington, D.C. to crown the next Republican presidential candidateof course, after their own interference with coverage on their conservative news network, ATN, convinced the current, temperamental president not to run again. Its a pit of vipers, so naturally, Logan Roy (Brian Cox) is in his element. But as the episode pokes at the unsavory underbelly of American politics, other characters find themselves taking to the environment, too.

Zoe Winters plays Kerry, Logans executive assistant, who has begun to assert herself at meetings, tossing off bold statements to the great delight of Logan and the great consternation of his children, who are worried that they might have to compete with an office flirtation for their fathers attention. Its a sudden move to the forefront for the character, who has been hovering in the background since the end of season two.

She joined at the height of the scandal in the cruise ship division, Winters tells Sonia Saraiya on this weeks episode of Still Watching. I have always been fascinated by the fact that she would choose to join the company at that pointshe would fasten herself to this dysfunction media dynasty as theyre facing this investigation. Winters, who also played a conservative operative in the buzzy Will Arbery play Heroes of the Fourth Turning, looked to operatives like Ann Coulter, Candace Owens, and Tomi Lahren for inspiration.

I really feel like Kerry has some terrifying political positions, Winters adds. She is obsessed with winning. The close relationship Kerry has with Logan stems partly from how dazzled the younger employee is of Logans success, ruthlessness and all. You can hear much more of the conversation with Winters in the episode below:

And of course, it wouldnt be a convention of conservative windbags without Connor Roy (Alan Ruck) doing the rounds. (A bewildered Shiv (Sarah Snook) comments that in a room full of Timothy McVeighs, her hapless older brother looks like a Roosevelt.)

Justine Lupe plays Willa, Connors girlfriend with theatrical aspirations, whose play last season was a dismal failure. The state of Connor and Willas relationship has been a bit of a mystery, but so far in season three, despite the general chaos around them, Connor and Willa have been an inseparable unitfrom holding down the Balkans to schmoozing in D.C. We spot her writing a play on her iPhone before fielding lecherous advances from organizer Stephen Root, whose attention, however unwanted, is good for Connors campaign.

Thats what we all run up against sometimes, explains Lupe. How do I float through this moment not allowing it to get too far, and yet making the other person feel calm? Willa, to her credit, knows her way around these situations. She was an escort. She went out with these guys. She knows how to be the easygoing best-date-ever kind of girl, Lupe adds.

Lupe also speculates with Still Watching on whats keeping Connor and Willa together. She doesnt think its ambition to be a political wife, or anything like that. Shes headstrong. And shes like, and she is protective of herself and shes and consequentially because shes tied to Connor. There is like a protectiveness of their thing together, Lupe says. And the level of denial that she has is so well-matched to Connors denial. I was so pleasantly surprised to see that shes still just like typing awaylike, okay, I have to be here, but Im going to be like working on my thing again.

Digital World Acquisition Confirms the Internet Belongs to the Right – Investorplace.com

Before we dive into a discussion on Digital World Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:DWAC) stock, the controversial special purpose acquisition company that will take Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG) public, its helpful to separate the noise from the narrative.

Source: NESPIX / Shutterstock.com

In other words, your personal feelings about former President Trump should not dictate your ultimate decision on DWAC stock.

Instead, its more productive to acknowledge the reality of the underlying situation. For instance, Trump is incredibly popular. I cant think of any former president that had as much sway post-election than The Donald.

That alone is enough to warrant a look at DWAC stock. After all, were in a market environment where collective sentiment plays a greater role than usual.

But what is the source of Trumps charisma? According to an opinion piece by Salon, America loves a bully. Bluntly, contributor Amanda Marcotte wrote in September 2015 that Trump is the affluent bully who revels in his privilege and enjoys stomping on those with less unearned social power than he has. And the Republican base is eating it up.

Granted, Salon leans left politically and the right will find Marcottes description of the former president ungenerous. Nevertheless, the author may be onto something, noting that conservative-leaning audiences lap up shock jocks like the late Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter.

I can tell you one thing. The country that brought the world Hollywood loves simple, digestible narratives: North versus south. Left versus right. Cowboys and Indigenous Americans.

Naturally, DWAC stock by virtue of underlining TMTGs Truth Social platform caters to the binarism that dominates most social and political discourse in the U.S.

Further, when grievances both real and perceived undergird said binarism, you have an incredibly powerful, perhaps unprecedented catalyst.

You want evidence of this catalyst? Then-candidate Donald Trump was able to corral the hurt and suffering whether real or perceived, it doesnt matter of his core voting base and it propelled him to the White House.

He didnt win on the issues. Remember, when Ron Paul was vying for the Republican nomination, the conservative audience booed him for promoting an anti-interventionist stance regarding sanctions on Iran. Just a few years later, then-President Trump attempted a peace negotiation with North Korea.

From the Axis of Evil to shaking hands with Kim Jong Un, Trumps charisma combined with Americas love for binary narratives resulted in astounding events in U.S. history. But somehow, DWAC stock is going to be a failure? It could be, dont get me wrong but the SPAC has less of a credibility challenge to climb.

More importantly, data from the Pew Research Center shows that the underlying business of DWAC stock features a massive addressable market. To no ones surprise, young people regularly consume news through social media platforms.

Significantly, though, two demographics whites and the modestly educated consume a large portion of their news through social media.

Granted, overall, Democrats dominate social media usage relative to Republicans. However, platforms like Truth Social have an opportunity to reach many under-the-radar conservatives, particularly those who feel they have been shamed and denigrated by mainstream institutions.

Again, Trump spoke to millions of Americans who felt this way and it led to powerful results. Why wouldnt the same apply for DWAC stock?

Business Insider provided an interesting take that Generation Z is more conservative than many realize. Considering that conservative social media content creators think alt-right channels before they got de-platformed were outrageously successful, DWACs prospective investors should be licking their lips.

To be clear, no guarantee exists that DWAC stock will be successful. Certainly, anti-Trump advocates on the left are doing everything they can to stymie its progress. However, in my opinion, conservative, even right-wing ideologies taking over social media and the internet is an inevitability.

Why? Liberal and progressive ideologies have become the social norm. Today, we are more socially aware across a library of issues than we ever have been. At some point, being even more liberal and more progressive yields a lower rate of return. Its the sociological version of the law of large numbers.

But you know what will gain quicker and more robust success? Being anti-establishment, deliberately stoking politically incorrect talking points. Its based (as the kids like to say) and its so entertaining because it tickles the reptilian part of our brain.

And tickling, if you think about it, is why the internet exists. Ultimately, binary audiences are easier to manipulate and thereby monetize. Its how one old man got eviscerated for wanting to be friends with Iran but how another old man was celebrated for befriending North Korea.

Binarism. Theres no drug like it. And thats exactly what a share of DWAC stock gets you.

US blocks export of quantum computing tech to Chinese organizations – CNET

An ion chamber houses the brains of a Honeywell quantum computer.

The Commerce Department on Wednesdaybarred US firms from exporting quantum computing technology to eight Chinese companies and labs to try to keep the country from decrypting sensitive US communications and developing new military technology.

"Global trade and commerce should support peace, prosperity, and good-paying jobs, not national security risks," Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said in a statement.

Though still technologically immature, quantum computers eventually could crack conventional encryption. The US government also is leading an active program to develop post-quantum cryptography, but communications that are intercepted today could be exposed if quantum computers become powerful enough.

Quantum computers take advantage of the physics of the ultrasmall to perform a radically different type of computation than conventional computer chips in today's phones, laptops and supercomputers. But today they work only at small scales, are prone to errors that derail calculations and are finicky enough to require ultracold conditions.

The department also pointed to quantum computing military risks involving "counter-stealth and counter-submarine applications." It detailed in theFederal Registerthe Chinese organizations added to its entities list involving export controls.

Another market where quantum computers also have potential is simulating molecular structures that could lead to new materials. Military technology has benefited immensely from materials science in the past, so quantum computing could lead to new breakthroughs.

To capitalize on these breakthroughs, many US companies are investing billions of dollars in developing quantum computers. That includes Google, IBM, Microsoft, Honeywell, IonQ, Rigetti, D-Wave and Intel. Google Chief Executive Sundar Pichai said in November thatChinese researchers are tied with Google in the race to develop quantum computing technology.

Breakthroughs in quantum computing drive higher processing power – Digital Nation

Quantum computing has seen recent breakthroughs in driving higher processing power that can lead to solving more complex problems.

A process known as quantum entanglement is a key driver of the processing power of quantum computers, and higher quantum entanglement states allow quantum computers to increase the complexity of their algorithms.

The University of Melbournes IBM Quantum Hub claims to have created the largest entanglement state of its kind in the world.

Speaking at an IBM media round table, Dr Charles Hill, senior lecturer in quantum computing, and technical lead with the IBM Quantum Hub at the University of Melbourne said that the partnership has allowed for the generation and verification of entanglement in quantum devices, driving forward research in the space.

According to Hill, entanglement is a critical difference between quantum computers and classical computers.

If a quantum computer really wasn't able to demonstrate entanglement, it really wouldn't be a quantum computer it would just be a very, very expensive and very cold, multimillion dollar calculator, says Hill.

The ability to prepare these large, highly entangled states is an important benchmark. It really demonstrates the ability of a quantum device to perform genuinely quantum mechanical computations.

The Australian governments recent development of a national quantum strategy which includes a $70 million dollar investment for a quantum commercialisation hub, as well as the US/AU Quantum cooperation statement reveals the enormous perceived impacts of quantum computing, with the sector expected to grow to at least $86 billion by 2040.

According to Melissa Price, Minister for Science and Technology, Australia now has an important mission to commercialise our research, particularly given quantum technologies are increasingly vital for industries in key areas like defence and national security, as flagged in the recent AUKUS agreement.

Dr Jay Gambetta, IBM Fellow and Vice President, Quantum Computing at IBM says that research is now at the stage where it is looking at ways to connect quantum information to applications.

We're going into this new era where we can start to look at what can we do with these machines? I think they're starting to get to the point that they're beyond what is easy to simulate on a classical computer, says Gambetta.

If I was to say one thing that I hope we achieve in the next few years is when someone from a different field that hasn't particularly been in quantum information actually uses this to answer a question. I think that will be an exciting time.
