Exclusive: Has Google won the cloud storage wars? – TechRadar

As we all take a much-needed break over the Christmas period, we can start to reflect on what a year this has been and how we can hope next year is better. One company that hasn't had a bad 2021 is Google and, specifically, Drive.

An exclusive TechRadar Pro poll carried out by OnePulse shows that Google Drive is by far and away the most popular cloud storage provider going, used by around 44.1% of respondents.

While this might not come as a surprise, there is a lot of competition in the cloud storage market at the moment. Apple, for example, has been expanding the scope of iCloud this year, introducing a bunch of privacy-focused features. Dropbox and OneDrive, too, are long-time competitors biting at Drive's heels.

But the extent of the domination is impressive and worth pondering for a while, driven at least initially by Google's willingness to give away generous services for free, alongside the overall ecosystem lock-in for its services and Android.

According to OnePulse, around 44% of respondents use Google Drive's free or paid services, followed by iCloud (31.2% across free and paid), OneDrive (11.2% across free and paid), Dropbox (6.8% across free and paid), and then everyone else makes up the remaining 6.8%.

So not that surprising overall but you can clearly see the influence of Apple's iPhone and Mac customer base electing to use the tightly integrated iCloud services.

Digging deeper, the poll found most people (48.7%) have been using their service for between one and five years, with the rest either under a year (16.3%) or over five years (35%).

In terms of storage, around 55.4% use between 1GB and 100GB, 30.8% have no idea how much storage is left, and 13.8% use between 101GB and 1TB or more.

How To Recover Deleted Text Messages On Android And IPhone – Tech News Today

Recovering deleted text messages is not a simple task but may be possible if you have proper backups set in place early on. Many advertised software claims to get the deleted data, but few do. The best option will always be backups.

Backup systems can range fromGoogle Drive, iCloud, Carrier companys cloud to specific phone companys cloud storage.

Major carriers like Verizon and AT & T provide cloud backup storage for their users.

Tons of people use Verizon cloud backup. You may use the free contact-only Backup or have a storage plan in place. If you do, you can restore the text messaging content to the phone

Note: Messages and call logs cant be backed up from or restored to iOS devices

AT&T has its own AT&T messaging app, including AT&T message backup & Sync. To download messages stored in the AT&T cloud From AT&T Messages Backup & Sync, use the following steps:

This message backup only works for certain android devices. This process will not work on IOS.

Sim cards hold very little memory in them but do hold some messages. There is no guarantee that the exact deleted message you are looking for is present there, but its worth a shot.

We suggest always backing up your whole device in google drive. If you lose any messages or anything else, everything can be restored all at once. Trying to restore specifically would need a third-party app using the BackupBackup of google drive as storage.

Follow the steps below to restore the Backup fully:

There are plenty of videos in the media regarding deleted messages retrieval for Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp. Most of them suggest full profile data downloads and archive processes.

Please understand that these things will not work. Archives hide messages from inbox, and data downloads will give you the full profile data without the deleted data.

If you have only deleted the specific message for yourself, the recipient will still have the copy. If the message is deleted from everyone, you will not get it back.

The best way to backup facebook is to download your total Facebook data from Facebook and keep it stored safely, preferably in cloud drives.

You can view the contents via a browser or HTML viewers except for WhatsApp, where you can back up chats within the app itself.

The best way to make sure you dont lose your message or any file in the future is to back them up early on. The best method has to be Google for android and iCloud option for IOS. These cloud options provide free storage, and you can buy more if need be.

Google Drive is a cloud storage service that can be accessed anywhere provided you have the appropriate logins. The great thing about it is that you get to store files here; hence, back-ups can be set up here. Lets learn how to do it:

For Android

Note: the specific steps may vary according to the model of the devices, but the gist is the same.

For IOS

There are various cloud backups available for different phones. For Eg: Xiaomi offers Mi Cloud with free 5GB of storage, so backing up messages, logs, and important stuff wont be a problem.

Similarly, you get one drive as your cloud backup service for Samsung devices with Free 5 GB of storage. Companies have different setup systems for their cloud.

The general step is to check settings and find your phones accounts and Sync or phone account. There will most likely be an option to join their cloud.

You can back up your essentials for Apple phones that use IOS via iCloud.

There are plenty of third-party apps that backup your device for you. If you regularly back up with your clouds from google or your carrier companies or iClouds etc., these Backups may not be necessary.

You can try one of the options below; one of them will surely work on your device:

Recommended for Androids

Recommended for IOS

Once you choose the delete option for any kind of file in your phone, the file is allocated for being overwritten, meaning as new files are stored in the device, they will overwrite the older files that you thought you deleted. There is a chance of those files being restored until it is overwritten.

Cybersecurity Issues in the Hybrid Workplace – CIO Applications

A business server backup is necessary to save data for numerous business applications.

Fremont, CA: Customers can use online cloud storage and backup service provided by a firm. They may securely store their critical data on numerous internet servers and access it from anywhere and at any time. The utility storage paradigm underpins the cloud storage method, providing scalability and flexible pay-as-you-go billing. Cloud storage and backups use hybrid storage and server structure that incorporates block level, event management, high and availability. They are based on various virtualization technologies and utilize the best security, performance, and availability practices.

Cloud computing services enable us to access all apps from any browser. Amazon, a prominent e-commerce company, was the first to provide cloud backup services. They also took advantage of this service for their customers. Almost every primary internet service provider now offers a corporate cloud backup service.

Most of these service providers provide three sorts of services: auto restoration, manual restore, and live restore. The user may restore data to an earlier time using the auto restore method. The user must generate a real-time backup of the data during the manual restore procedure. The user is not necessary to backup data regularly while using live restore. Tiny company cloud backup services might produce fantastic outcomes for a small firm.

Audit trails may be produced in the event of a calamity, such as theft. Data recovery from an external storage device can be beneficial in formatting failure, operating system failure, hard disc failure, and unintentional destruction. It is critical to recovering critical data for various functions such as billing, accounting, client service, and product development.

Small enterprises must have a reliable data backup solution to cut operating costs. Because a business frequently includes transactions, it is critical to safeguard all data transactions. A solid data backup solution ensures that all data is protected in an unforeseen tragedy. In addition, it is vital to safeguard various network components to ensure good communication. A network outage can quickly disrupt critical communication and data access.

Data restoration services should be provided via a backup service. The procedure entails restoring corporate data to a certain point in time. Most suppliers offer adequate recovery and security options. However, backups should be created and maintained regularly to minimize the risk of data loss.

Businesses should also choose a cloud backup solution. This service offers backup history as well as access authorization control. Cloud backup services are reasonably priced. In addition, they make it easy for businesses to implement a backup strategy. Therefore, it is critical to examine pricing and choose a good backup service for your company.

Cloud storage can help a small business cut expenditures. Saving money is made easier with virtual private servers. Businesses can benefit from significant cost savings as well as increased security. It is critical to choose an appropriate remedy. Further more, vital data should be backed up to be quickly recovered in the case of a calamity.

When employees leave, is your data walking out the door? – Help Net Security

In the second quarter of 2021, American workers began resigning from their jobs at a historic rate. The Great Resignation, as its since been dubbed, has seen the U.S. set monthly records for the number of workers leaving their jobs three times this year. In September alone, 4.4 million workers resigned from their jobs. The same trend is being seen in the U.K., where resignations are at their highest level in 20 years.

For organizations with valuable intellectual property or personal identifiable information, these resignations represent a serious security threat. According to Code42, the three-month period between April and June 2021 that kicked off this wave of resignations coincided with a 61 per cent increase in data exposure events from the previous quarter.

Data exfiltration often rises alongside resignations because more employees are misappropriating data and theyre doing so around the time they resign. A Tessian study confirmed this, finding that 45 per cent of employees admit to downloading, saving or sending work data out of network before leaving their jobs.

Everything from customer lists to intellectual property is in danger of being exfiltrated and for a variety of reasons. It may be that employees feel entitled to the intellectual property they helped create. It may be that they want to jump start their work with a new company and that taking data, in their minds, is no crime. It may be that theyre disgruntled and looking to do harm by selling the data to a competitor. In the most extreme case, the employees in question may even be cybercriminals-for-hire who infiltrate enterprises with the sole purpose of causing harm.

Amid all these possibilities, it is no longer reasonable for organizations to risk leaving the protection of their most valuable data up to chance. Organizations with valuable intangible assets must consider performing digital forensic scans as part of their standard operating procedures when offboarding employees, to identify threat actors and the data theyre exfiltrating. Doing so would enable organizations to better manage the risk of insider activity and give them the means to recover critical data and in some instances even seek legal recourse.

Before organizations begin scanning for insider activity, they should update their standard business practices to reflect the new challenges presented by insiders. Many organizations only perform a standard review of devices belonging to outgoing employees after their departure. By then, its already too late. Collecting their devices early also isnt an option because it would slow productivity, tip off insiders and give them a window to act nefariously between the date their device is returned and their final day of employment.

To identify and eliminate insider activity, security teams must act weeks before the date employees are set to depart and perform digital forensic analyses using solutions that allow them to scan target endpoints remotely and covertly.

A digital investigation will often involve three steps: triage, a complete digital forensic analysis, and intervention, often led by human resources and legal teams.

By beginning with triaging, organizations can save time by quickly scanning for insider activity. This approach also balances the need for security measures with the privacy of employees as forensic analysts are not sifting through all their digital activity with the hopes of finding a smoking gun. Triage solutions can rapidly determine whether data has been exfiltrated from a target endpoint by scanning common threat vectors such as USB connection history, recently accessed folders, cloud storage and internet history and activity.

The same tools can be used to investigate unintentional data leakage incidents, such as an employee uploading work documents to a personal cloud storage account to continue a project from home or sending an email containing data to the wrong recipient. In the case of data exfiltration involving files copied to a USB drive, a triage solution will identify the date an insider took this action and the name of the files and folders that were exfiltrated. This gives analysts the leads they require to perform a deeper digital forensic analysis.

With a full digital forensic examination, an analyst can trace an insiders steps, create a timeline of their movement and determine exactly what data was exfiltrated. Analysts will begin by remotely and covertly connecting to the suspects computer as well as cloud-based sources such as Microsoft Office 365, Amazon Web Services, and Slack. Using the results of the triage as a guide, analysts can begin their investigation by targeting the date of exfiltration and the file itself. File and folder names can easily be changed to disguise the data within and so this data point alone wont prove any wrongdoing. During a full analysis, however, analysts can access the files and folders that were copied to USB drives and determine whether they have been altered in any way.

Confirming that an employee exfiltrated source code, customer lists or other valuable data isnt enough to complete an investigation. It could be that several weeks before their resignation, the employee in question researched how to conceal their activity from security teams and deployed anti-forensic software to cover their tracks. One week later, they may have downloaded the data onto their desktop. Before they exfiltrated the data to a USB drive, the insider may have emailed another copy to a non-company address or uploaded it to a personal cloud storage system. Each one of these data points is a piece of evidence that will help an analyst build a case.

Once the investigation is complete, organizations can use the results to move towards an appropriate resolution, ranging from a warning to early termination with cause and, in some situations, a lawsuit. Before HR and legal teams meet with the suspect, its important to remember that some employees dont realize that downloading confidential data and departing an organization with it is a crime.

Depending on the results of the investigation, organizations may wish to take a different course of action with these employees than with those who clearly tried to cover their tracks or were caught negotiating a sale of the data they stole and very clearly knew the gravity of their actions.

The last and perhaps most important step is to attempt to recover the lost data or damages from the insider event. The threat of legal action can be leveraged to request that an insider return the data and the reality is that a lawsuit may be required in some instances. This scenario is an important one to consider in cases where the data that was taken by an insider was highly confidential or the damages linked to their activity were high.

While digital forensic tools cannot recover the data that has been exfiltrated, they do facilitate the legal process, should it be required, because the evidence they collect has proven to be reliable in both civil and criminal court. This is because they collect evidence in a forensically sound and repeatable manner, while also upholding the chain of custody. The same evidence an analyst collected to warrant the insiders early termination is what legal teams could use to pursue legal action.

Assuming the worst about your employees is difficult but planning for it is part of being a thoughtful leader in the digital age. With employee data exfiltration rising rapidly alongside resignations, organizations must take a more thorough approach to risk management. By implementing digital forensics into their offboarding processes, organizations can fall back on another layer of security and ensure their most valuable assets arent being stolen out from underneath them.

There’s a cheaper Lenovo Duet 5 Chromebook on sale for $399. Should you buy it? – About Chromebooks

After reviewing the Lenovo Duet 5 Chromebook myself, I browsed some of the other takes available on the web. Id say most of them were pretty similar: Yes, its a decent device but not without a few quirks. I noticed that we were all sent the $499 configuration though. And theres a cheaper Lenovo Duet 5 Chromebook configuration priced at $429. Its currently available from Amazon for $399 but should you buy it and save $100?

If youre not in the market for a dual-purpose Chrome OS tablet, probably not. Even though this detachable device makes for a good Chromebook on the desk, its pretty entry-level when it comes to performance.

Put another way: Your $399 can get you a better processor, more memory, or more storage than this cheaper Lenovo Duet 5 Chromebook.

If youre thinking about the $499 model I reviewed, however, then maybe this is a good deal for you.

For $100 less, you still get much of what I like about this Chrome OS tablet. You have the same bright 400 nits 13.3-inch 1080p display, quad speakers, keyboard, kickstand accessories, long battery life, and the second-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c compute system.

The only differences are where you need to carefully consider your expectations and use cases.

There are only two of those differences in the cheaper Lenovo Duet 5 Chromebook thats normally priced at $429.99: Youre getting half of the RAM and local storage as the higher-priced model that I reviewed. That means 4 GB of memory instead of 8 GB and 64 GB of local storage instead of 128 GB.

Personally, Id be less concerned about the latter. While having more local storage is always a plus, you can always supplement it with a USB drive or cloud storage.

Im so used to storing key information in the cloud that I could easily get by with 64 GB of local storage. You may not, so its worth thinking about how and where you keep your data.

The 4 GB of RAM is the more critical aspect here. Having more memory allows you to have more browser tabs and apps open at the same time, for example. Once you start loading up more and more of those on a Chromebook with 4 GB of memory, youll start seeing more lag as the device gets bogged down.

That doesnt mean a Chromebook with 4 GB of memory isnt usable. You just have to understansd and accept the limitations.

So if you want a nice casual device for content consumption and a few web apps running simultaneously, this cheaper Lenovo Duet 5 Chromebook should do the trick. And youll still get to enjoy that gorgeous, high-contrast OLED display and all of the other nice aspects of the higher-priced configuration.

You can also add an optional USI stylus in the future because its supported on both models. And it works well for taking notes, provided you choose the right application.

Id say if you can afford the $499 model and really want to use the Duet 5 as a primary machine for everyday, mainstream tasks, go for it. But if your budget is constrained and you wont be pusing the device too hard, this $399 model will get the job done. Just keep your expectations in line with the two limitations on this configuration.

Cell Phone Memory Is Full – These Tips Will Help You – Tech Gaming Report

You can really do everything with a smartphone: write messages, read news, take photos and videos, watch movies, download and also music. No matter how limitless the pleasure is, the memory is not. These tips will help you if your smartphone or cell phone memory is full.

This tip wont solve your problem, but it will help you. Get an overview of what is primarily using memory photos, apps, or other media. This overview helps you follow the correct steps.

With Speicher its like cleaning your own four walls in the spring. Full is packed so cleaning only helps. The first thing to do is check if there is any unnecessary ballast on board. On the smartphone, these are applications that you no longer use anyway. Some applications can occupy several hundred megabytes of memory. That is why you need to delete the unused apps.

Deleting videos is a bit more complex, but definitely profitable. Of course, you only have to choose those that you do not want to keep, for example because they are unimportant, failed or unwanted recordings. But the search is worth it. Videos consume a lot of memory. You can also do the photo process. This can also be useful if there are many recordings.

If you dont want to get rid of the photos and videos forever, but you dont need them on your smartphone, there is an alternative way: Back up the files to a computer. Once the photos and videos have been backed up, you can delete them on your phone to free up storage space again.

Android / iOS: The process is almost identical on both systems.

WhatsApp is still the most popular messenger in the world. However, it also has its downsides. A double-edged sword is the automatic storage of received files. Every photo and video secretly ends up on your local data storage device and takes up valuable space, even if you delete them from the photos or gallery app (see tip 1). Its not uncommon for WhatsApp to be in the top 3 of the space-consuming ones (see tip 0). Most of the media are usually funny snapshots that you dont want to keep for the long haul.

Conveniently, WhatsApp now has built-in memory management. To do this, go to Settings and Manage storage. Now there are several options: You can delete files larger than 5 megabytes to be the first to remove large memory hogs. It is almost exclusively about videos. Or you can look at the chats listed below to see what content you want to remove from them.

Do you want an alternative to WhatsApp Messenger? The choice is not very wide, but there is one.

When browsing, downloading and more: unnecessary files just accumulate on the smartphone through use, such as cookies, temporary or damaged or outdated files and more. So-called junk files are unnecessary and cost memory. So go with the garbage.

Android: A popular application for Windows computers is also available for Android smartphones: CCleaner. You can get over it download this link or get it yourself from play store. After that, follow the few steps in the app to clean up the memory.

ios: CCleaner is not available on iOS and the alternatives are usually paid, at exorbitant prices. However, Apples operating system handles garbage handling automatically, so there is less to clean up than on Android. If you want to help, you can:

CCleaner PC optimization tool completely and safely removes junk data from PC in one go. The new version is now available in the Microsoft Store.

With cloud services, you save your files on a server, for example at Google, Microsoft or Apple. Reservations about storing private and highly personal data, such as vacation photos, may deter some users. A cloud service has unbeatable advantages:

The provider you choose is up to you. In general, the following applies: Depending on the operating system, internal services are better integrated. For Android there is Google drive about. Auto upload can be activated for photos and videos and Android users usually already have the necessary Google account anyway. Up to 15 gigabytes of storage are available here for free.

For Apple iOS is suitable iCloud. The service is deeply anchored in the operating system. Therefore, it is particularly convenient to back up photos, videos, and device settings. However, only 5 gigabytes of storage space are free.

Cloud services offer a large amount of storage space on the Internet that can be accessed from anywhere. IMTEST has compared how practical and secure five cloud storage providers are.

iCloud: If you havent already done so when setting up iPhone, you can turn on iCloud in settings. To do this, press directly on the previous settings in your profile (provided with your username), then on iCloud. Here, depending on the application, you can choose what should end up in the cloud. Under Photos you will also find the item Optimize iPhone storage. This will give you additional storage space on the iPhone.

Google drive: The app is on most Android smartphones Google photos, which is based on Google Drive, already installed. Both iPhones and Android devices can get the app from the corresponding app store. If you start the application for the first time, you will be asked if you want to backup your photos and videos. Also, you can gain memory. Photos are uploaded to the cloud and deleted from the smartphone. They can still be accessed as long as the device has access to the internet and the Google Photos app. To do this, press your profile symbol in the upper right corner, then Free up space and confirm with the blue button below.

The WFH splurge guide: You are probably missing out on this cool tech ensemble – Hindustan Times

The idea of work from home (WFH) is here to stay with the emergence of the Omicron variant of Covid-19. And it may be time to look for tools for efficient WFH multitasking that also take care of your health:

Second display: ViewSonic VG1655

At times the display is not enough as you struggle to switch between active apps on a busy workday. How about something that can be a second screen for not just your laptop or PC, but also your Android tablet, Windows 11 (or Windows 10) convertible, and even your Android phone or Apple iPhone?

The ViewSonic VG1655 is a 16-inch IPS display. Not just your tablet, this will be larger than most laptops. And definitely a large screen companion for your phone. This connects with the source device with the USB-C cables. Weighing less than a kg, it is 6.9mm thick for the most part and you can configure this for use horizontally or vertically. The device is quite bright and crisp. The Full HD resolution should work for most users. This is a serious investment with a price tag of around 22,699.

Uniform illumination: BenQ ScreenBar Plus

Desk lamps take space on your desk. The spread of light on the workstation desk and indeed the desktop or laptop is also uneven. The latter, because the source of light sits on one side of the desk unless you keep two lamps. For Windows desktop PC and Apple iMac users, BenQs ScreenBar Plus can clip onto the top of the display for top-down (evenly spread) lighting on the entire desk and the screen you are looking at too.

For controls, there is an easy-to-use dial to work your way around and auto-brightness too, which is relevant if you use this as the day transitions into the evening and then sundown. But this feature can be turned off as well. The clip design is quite slick and factors in differing thickness and design curves, which means it will be easily mountable on most displays. The throw of the light is towards you as you sit, and wide as well, which means even large workstation tables will be easily covered. It does not really have many rivals, and the utility should justify the 12,990 price for most users.

External storage: Western Digital WD My Passport SSD

If you are not using an external storage drive to regularly back up your files and data or to back up your Windows PC or Mac, you are making a mistake. Two possible reasons why you are ignoring the good old storage drivesyou are not backing up your data at all, or you are relying heavily on cloud storage. If the latter is the reason, remember that is heavily dependent on good internet connectivity which may fail you when it is crunch time.

Western Digitals WD My Passport SSD is one of the better solid-state drives (SSDs). Quite compact too, it is smaller than your smartphone, with drop and vibration resistance. Simply put, it likely would not break if you accidentally slide it off the workstation desk. Prices start around 6,900 (this is available in capacities between 500GB and 4TB). The theoretical data read and write top speeds of around 1000MB/s are fast for an SSD. Since there are no moving parts, compared with older generation hard drives (also known as HDDs), these are more reliable over time.

Webcam: Anker Powerconf C300

Never before did webcams (either the ones integrated into laptops and tablets or the external peripherals) get as much attention and result in as much utility as the world we live in now. One of the good options to have for video calls and for your childs online classroom is the Anker Powerconf C300. On the spec sheet, this ticks off most of what you will want and need. 1080p Full HD resolution, 60 frames per second refresh rate for smooth video calls, and low-light boost in case you are doing the video call in a dimly lit room.

The interesting bit is the artificial intelligence or AI aspect. This monitors your video feed and any changes in lighting to tweak the colour depth and warmth. This theoretically should have a positive impact on skin tones. Then there is the small matter of exposure, which will determine illumination, contrast, and shadows in your video frame, as others see it. Last but not least is a physical privacy shutter slider too. The Anker Powerconf C300 does not come cheap with a price tag of around 9,500 but you do get the Zoom Certified stamp of approval.

Lighting it up: Xiaomi Mi Smart Desk LED Lamp 1S

The Mi Smart LED Desk Lamp 1S is one of the better lighting options for your home workstation desk, than you may otherwise find in the price range of what this costsaround 2,899. You get a lot of bells and whistles with this. Smart app control, voice commands (works with Alexa, Siri, and Assistant), adjust the light colour temperature, the brightness, a focus mode, and a computer mode that specifically claims to reduce blue light.

It has an all-metal casing, which should be good for longevity and robustness. What we really appreciate are the compact dimensions of the base, which means this would not take up too much space on your workstation. The maximum brightness is 520 lumens from the 10-watt LED array. The single physical knob on the lamp is convenient to change modes and brightness if you are not using the smart features at some point. Most rivals, of which you will find plenty on shopping websites, miss out on smart features and also do not offer flicker-free lighting. The latter should help reduce headaches.

Authored by Sridhar Pinnapureddy, Chairman, CtrlS & Cloud4C

12 billion connected devices. Over 8000 LEO satellites.6 billion internet users.65% digitization of Global GDP. Over $6 trillion investments Can we truly comprehend where the digital age is headed?

If 2021heralded the digital resilience age post the largest catastrophe in recent history, 2022 would be marked for revivalism and action.Billions of consumers across the world have grown habituated to the online lifestyle and enterprises across verticals have well responded to the e-fire;imbibingdigital-first business strategies. But the larger question remains: Do organizationsperceive tech as evolution enablement for global servicing or the key chauffeur to theirvisions of tomorrow? The above statistical reflection would answer the conundrum crystal clear.

Digital Twin for Everything: The Inevitable Evolution

Lets face it. Humanity isgalloping towardsan unfathomable transformation: a digitally connected, holistic, and intelligent planet. While that mightread like aleaf straight outofa science fiction book, reality speaks otherwise.Silicon Valley and its contemporaries are already betting hundreds of billions of dollars on the next generation of the internet (Web 3.0, Internet of Everything) and thatcertainly wont be limited to the fancy devices on your palms or desktops. The internet would graduate out of 2D boxes to assume a more immersive, 3-D avatar where our lives are embedded, connectedwithin immersive experiences.Embedded learning, Mixed Reality,Telehealth, decentralized services, satellite-powereddigital services,Smart Living via Automation and AI, connectedsmartdevices; the list is a never-ending one.As much as that soundsfascinating, theres a massive IT drillbrewingindoors; fundamental essentiality to conform to theaboveneo-digital era.

However, every evolution has its own expenses and thats where lurks the most significant IT trend of 2022 and beyond; Sustainable Computing. Faster data speeds, agile delivery, 24/7 uninterrupted experiences deserve colossal amounts ofcomputing prowess and hence electricity, severely impacting energy and water reserves.Last year, 62% of global energy demands weremet through fossil fuels, renewables accounting for only 20%.Thats an unfortunate lot of carbon footprint spilling extra horrors when considered the Connected Everywhere dream,hencered-flaggingtheneed tomass-adopt green IT measuresright from the root infra till the frontend application layer.

Datacenters need to increasingly operate on renewable energies, run power-efficient serversand cores, inspire lesser water wastage for coolant systems, and prevent usage overloads. Platformand software solutionsmustbe optimized for maximum power efficiency while running just as they are architected for scalability, agility, and performance. Recycling measures for hardware infra materials should be encouraged with additional time, resources, and finances. Client enterprises, regardless of industry vertical, shouldopt for green IT vendors even if that necessitates slightly higher budget allocations.End consumers should be aware of their own digital carbon footprints and equally vocalize for sustainable services.CtrlS progressive vision and aggressive steps towards 100% renewal energy-powered data centers by 2025, and zero carbon footprint by 2030 has won many accolades worldwide.

Only when all factionseffectively collaborate, can we realize the everywhere connected, intelligent age in full harmony with natural existence. Thatsthe vision we at Cloud4C truly dream to empower.

John Dorfman: Why I own only 2 of the Sacred Seven stocks – TribLIVE

There are seven stocks that investors seem to worship. In the parlance of the 1970s, they are one-decision stocks: You are supposed to buy them and never sell them. Call them the Sacred Seven.

The blessed septet are Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL, formerly Google), Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN), Apple Inc. (AAPL), Meta Platforms Inc. (FB, formerly Facebook), Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), Netflix Inc. (NFLX) and Tesla Inc. (TSLAJ).

I personally own only two of these seven stocks. Ill list them in order of my preference.

Alphabet

Im not completely objective about Alphabet, since my oldest daughter works for the companys Deep Mind division in London. However, I try to be objective, and I still think Alphabet is a good candidate for the most innovative company on Earth.

It owns the ubiquitous Google search engines, the promising self-driving car project Waymo and the popular video sharing platform YouTube. By price/earnings ratio, it is the second-cheapest of the Sacred Seven, with the stock selling for 28 times recent earnings and 26 times estimated earnings.

Apple

Apple Inc., lord of the iPhone, has nearly $17 billion in cash and more than $113 billion in marketable securities. It has earned 20% or more on invested capital in 12 of the past 15 fiscal years, and last years figure was above 35%, the best since 2009.

Customer loyalty? Most people I know own iPhones, love them and cant imagine life without them.

Apples stock price is up 1,114% over the past decade, including a 29% gain in the past year. The stock price is 31 times earnings.

Microsoft

Once best known for dominating the personal-computer software field (Microsoft Office, Excel), Microsoft is now a big provider of cloud services to companies. Earnings growth, which averaged about 12% over the past decade, shot up to 44% in the past year.

My hesitancy about the stock relates to valuation. It sells for 37 times recent earnings, a bit pricier than Alphabet and Apple. The price/book ratio (stock price divided by corporate net worth per share) and price/sales ratio (stock price divided by per-share revenue) are quite high at 16 and 14, respectively.

Amazon.com

I first heard of Amazon.com around 1995, when a friend who owned a bookstore complained that the company was eating his lunch. From books, Amazon gradually expanded into selling every type of merchandise.

Computer power always has been the key to its success and, lately, it, like Microsoft, provides cloud services to many large companies.

I think Amazon will continue to grow. Home shopping jumped because of the pandemic, but it was growing steadily even before that. However, the stock, at 66 times earnings, discounts a lot of future success.

Netflix

Netflix deserves immense praise for pioneering the streaming model of home entertainment, in which consumers can watch almost anything they wish at a time convenient for them. But success always breeds imitation in other words, increasing competition.

Streaming services now competing with Netflix include Amazon Prime, Disney Plus, HBO Plus and Paramount Plus. Return on invested capital, recently about 15%, had weakened prior to the pandemic and still is below the levels of 2006-10.

The price/earnings ratio is steep at 55 times recent earnings and 47 times estimated earnings.

Meta Platforms

Meta Platforms, formerly Facebook, has some major competitive advantages. Because so many people use its sites, they are useful for finding people or staying in touch with friends. And because the company has detailed information about people, it can target ads something that advertisers relish.

There are clouds, however. Use by younger people is edging downward. Politicians and regulators in Europe and the U.S. are pushing the company to give users more privacy protections. Meta also has problems in policing unacceptable speech on its site, including hate speech and malicious political propaganda.

Because of these issues, Meta sells for the lowest price/earnings ratio in the Sacred Seven, 24 times trailing earnings and 22 times estimated forward earnings.

Tesla

Elon Musks manufacturer of snazzy electric cars broke into the black in 2020 and improved its profits a lot in 2021. Musk has flair, charisma and boldness and strikingly bad judgment at times, for example when he feuds with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Teslas valuations defy the old saying, Even trees dont grow to the sky. The stock sells for 345 times recent earnings, 147 times estimated forward earnings. Anything other than perfect corporate performance could trigger an enormous drop.

Disclosure: I own Alphabet and Apple personally and for almost all of my clients. My wife, Katharine Davidge, who is a portfolio manager at Dorfman Value Investments, owns Microsoft and Amazon.com personally and for clients.

John Dorfman is chairman of Dorfman Value Investments LLC in Newton Upper Falls, Mass., and a syndicated columnist. His firm or clients may own or trade securities discussed in this column. He can be reached via email.
