Third Wave May Peak Between February 1 And 15: IIT Madras Analysis – NDTV

India is seeing an exponential rise in the number of coronavirus cases again. (File)

India's R-naught value which indicates the spread of COVID-19 was recorded at 4 this week, suggesting a very high infection transmission rate, according to a preliminary analysis by IIT Madras predicting the peak of the third wave between February 1-15.

R-naught or R0 indicates the number of people an infected person can spread the disease to. A pandemic is considered to end if this value goes below 1.

Based on preliminary analysis by computational modeling done by IIT Madras, which was shared with news agency PTI, the R0 value was close to 2.9 nationally in the past week (December 25 to December 31). The number was recorded at 4 this week (January 1-6).

Explaining further, Dr Jayant Jha, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, IIT Madras, said R0 depends on three things -- transmissibility probability, contact rate and the expected time interval in which infection can happen.

"Now, with the increase in quarantine measures or restrictions, maybe the contact rate will go down and then in that case R0 can decrease. So, based on our preliminary analysis, which is just based on the last two weeks, we can tell these numbers, but again, these numbers can change based on how much affirmative action is taken with respect to social gathering and all," he said.

The Union Health Ministry on Wednesday said India is seeing an exponential rise in the number of coronavirus cases, which is believed to be driven by the Omicron variant. It also highlighted that the country's R naught value is 2.69, higher than the 1.69 recorded during the peak of the pandemic's second wave.

Mr Jha said the ministry's estimates are based on a different time interval than IIT Madras which has done the preliminary analysis from the past two weeks.

He further said that as per their estimate, the peak in the current wave is expected to come between February 1-15 and it is expected to be sharper than earlier peaks.

"What we expect from the exploratory data analysis is that the peak will happen somewhere between February 1-15 and our analysis also shows that as compared to previous waves, there will be a sharper increase to the peak," Mr Jha said.

He said this wave will be different from the previous waves because of vaccination and factors like less social distancing seen this time.

Responding to how it is estimated that there is less social distancing in this wave, he said during the first wave many restrictions were imposed but right now despite having a high number of cases there are not many restrictions imposed yet.

"But the advantage here is that almost 50 per cent of the population this time has got vaccinated," Mr Jha added.

The preliminary analysis has been done jointly by IIT Madras' Department of Mathematics and Centre of Excellence for Computational Mathematics and Data Science headed by Prof Neelesh S Upadhye and Prof S Sundar.

India saw a single-day rise of 1,41,986 new coronavirus cases, raising the tally to 3,53,68,372, which included 3,071 cases of Omicron variant reported across 27 states and union territories so far, the Union Health Ministry said on Saturday.

She is a correspondent for "Human Events" magazine.

Honors graduate from Cornell University School of Arts and Sciences (Class of 1984) and received her J.D. from The University of Michigan Law School.

She was an editor of The Michigan Law Review.

Coulter practiced law in New York City.

Was a litigator with The Center For Individual Rights in Washington, DC, a law firm that says it is "dedicated to the defense of individual rights with a particular emphasis on freedom of speech, civil rights and the freedom of religion.".

She clerked for the Hon. Pasco Bowman II of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and was an attorney in the Department of Justice Honors program for outstanding law school graduates.

Writes a syndicated column for Universal Press Syndicate.

First came to prominence with the publication of the book "High Crimes and Misdemeanors", which was a best-seller in 1998. That led to her now-familiar appearances as a guest on many conservative television talk shows and her many appearances as a guest or guest host of most of the country's right-wing radio talk shows. Two subsequent books, "Slander" and "Treason", have also been best-sellers.

During the Q&A session of her lecture at the University of Arizona in October 2004, two pie-wielding pranksters ran up to her and threw their pies, but she very quickly ran off the stage and the pies missed her. In a column written several months after the incident, she fumed, "Fortunately, liberals not only argue like liberals, they also throw like girls.".

Younger sister of John Jr. and James (Jim) Coulter. Sister-in-law of Pam and Diane. Aunt of Kimberly and Christina.

Daughter of John Vincent Coulter, born ca 1928, attorney for Phelps Dodge, and wife Nell Husbands Martin, born in Paducah, Kentucky, 23 February 1928 and married in Stuyvesant, New York, 30 September 1953.

She has size twelve feet.

Her dress size is ten.

Contrary to popular belief (and satirical attacks), she is a biological woman.

In spite of their political differences, she is good friends with Bill Maher.

Swing voters are more appropriately known as the 'idiot voters' because they have no set of philosophical principles. By the age of fourteen, you're either a Conservative or a Liberal if you have an IQ above a toaster.

Liberals can't just come out and say they want to take more of our money, kill babies, and discriminate on the basis of race.

There are lots of bad Republicans, there are no good Democrats.

[In response to people's criticism of her use of false and misleading information in her books] "Liberals take sheer joy in telling lies, they take insolent pleasure in saying absurd things."

I love it! You know, when I tour college campuses, I always find that the prettiest girls in the room are the ones in the College Republicans.

It would be a much better country (the United States) if women did not vote. That is simply a fact. In fact, in every presidential election since 1950 - except Goldwater in '64 - the Republican would have won, if only the men had voted.

What if they start having one of these bipolar episodes with nuclear weapons? I think our motto should be, post-9/11, 'Raghead talks tough, raghead faces consequences.'

"Finally, a word to those of you out there who have yet to be offended by something I have written or said: Please be patient. I am working as fast as I can." June 21, 2006.

"Democrats won't acknowledge the existence of "an imminent threat" any place in the world until a nuclear missile is 12 minutes from New York. And then we'll never have the satisfaction of saying "I told you so" because we'll all be dead. " July 19, 2006.

If we took away women's right to vote, we'd never have to worry about another Democrat [sic] president. It's kind of a pipe dream, it's a personal fantasy of mine, but I don't think it's going to happen. And it is a good way of making the point that women are voting so stupidly, at least single women. [on the 2012 Presidential debates] I highly approve of Romney's decision to be kind and gentle to the retard.

No matter what argument you make against evolution, the response is "Well, you know, it's possible to believe in evolution and believe in God." Yes, and it's possible to believe in Spiderman and believe in God, but that doesn't prove Spiderman is true.

I don't believe Hurricane Harry is God's punishment for Houston electing a lesbian mayor. But that is more credible than "climate change".

Ann Coulter: The Great Epstein Cover-up, Part I

Question: Is our ruling classtryingto make us to think theyre a bunch of pederasts? Our media could not be less interested in Jeffrey Epsteins child molestation ring and, with the sole exception of the Palm Beach Police Department, every arm of government has bent over backward to bury the case.

(Who says our media and government cant work together?)

The jurys courageous delivery last week of five guilty verdicts against Epsteins pimp, Ghislaine Maxwell, was a sort of reverse jury nullification. The U.S. attorneys office theprosecution did everything it could to get an acquittal, but the jurors defied them.

A court artists sketch of the jury in Ghislaine Maxwells sex trafficking trial on December 21, 2021, in New York. (Elizabeth Williams via AP)

As for media coverage, did you even know that the FBI found Epsteins cache of sex tapes labeled (name of underage girl) + (name of VIP) and then lost them?

Immediately after Epsteins arrest at Teterboro Airport in July 2019, the FBI executed a search warrant on his New York mansion. Following a daylong search, agents discovered a hidden safe in the closet of a fifth-floor dressing room, used a saw to break into it, and found an enormous collection of photos of naked girls, and CDs of the girls apparently having sex with influential men.

Then, the agents left abandoning the photos and CDs, with Epsteins employees free to wander about the place. As Kelly Maguire, FBI special agent in charge of the search, explained during Maxwells trial, they only had a warrant tosearchthe house, but not toremoveevidence evidence at the heart of the entire sex trafficking scheme.

It didnt occur to Maguire to leave a single agent behind to guard the CDs? How about the intern who just gets coffee?

Youll never guess what happened next.

The CDs and photographs disappeared. By the time the FBI returned with a new warrant four days later to remove the CDs and photos, they were gone. Later, after a few phone calls, Epsteins lawyer, Richard Kahn, returned the cache in two suitcases.I had no idea they were important! I was just tidying up!

Were the videos tampered with? Were all of the photos returned? Who knows!

This was testified to by Special Agent Maguire.Thats the last time I trust the lawyer of a pedophile! Boy, is my face red! Darn it! Oh well, what are you going to do?

(Before moving on, lets take a moment to honor the historic appointment of Kelly Maguire as FBI special agent. Another glass ceiling shattered!)

How could any search warrant for Epsteins residence fail to specify videos?

In this courtroom sketch, Assistant U.S. Attorney Alison Moe, left, questions FBI Special Agent Kelly McGuire on the witness stand on December 6, 2021, in New York. (AP Photo/Elizabeth Williams)

The reason the tapes are kind of important is that it was perfectly clear certainly by 2019 that Epstein had no legitimate source of income to fund his Caligula lifestyle, and further, that he was farming out underage girls for sex to the rich and powerful with hidden cameras running everywhere. It sure looked like his underage sex ring was a blackmail/kompromat operation.

Obviously, the most important question is:On behalf of whom? The tapes of (underage girl) + (important person) would have gone a long way toward answering that. What did the search warrant specify, if not videos and photographs?

If I didnt know better, I might think that those in power dont want us to know anything about Epsteins sex-trafficking operation.

As further evidence that there is ABSOLUTELY NO COVER-UP: The New York Times has never breathed a single word about the CDs lost in the FBIs botched search. Nor has the Washington Post. Nor the Chicago Tribune. Nor the Los Angeles Times.

Wait Ill make this easier. Heres a list of all the major U.S. newspapers thatdidreport on Maguires breathtaking revelation:

1) The Miami Herald2) The New York Post

The end.

Oddly, media in the rest of the world seemed to find Maguires testimony about the vanishing CDs somewhat more newsworthy. The story of the missing tapes was covered repeatedly in theDaily Telegraph(London),the Independent(United Kingdom),the Daily Mail(Ireland), Economic News (Russia) and theDaily Mail(U.K.), among others.

The totally not-a-cover-up gets weirder and weirder.

Epstein had vast wealth, and we still dont know where it came from. Normally, the IRS is extremely curious about unexplained flows of riches. Did the IRS decide in this case,Well, he may be a committed and energetic pedophile, but as far as we know, hes a conscientious taxpayer!

This collage shows four of accused child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epsteins lavish residences around the world. Top left: Epsteins apartment in the 16th arrondissement of Paris; top right: Epsteins mansion on the Upper East Side of Manhattan; bottom left: Epsteins private island estate in the U.S. Virgin Islands; bottom right: Epsteins home in Palm Beach, Florida. (Jacques Demarthon, Kevin Hagen/Getty Images; Wikimedia Commons; Wilfredo Lee/AP Photo)

Similarly, there are vague claims that he made his money from investments. The SEC wasnt the least bit interested in finding out how he got this rich from secretive investment services?

And this: Epstein spent decades aggressively cultivatingpowerful, importantmen, quite afewfromforeigncountries evidently taping all their activities. Why wasnt the CIA concerned? Couldnt he have sold dirt on U.S. politicians to foreign intel agencies?

U.S Attorney Audrey Strauss points to a photo of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell during a news conference on July 2, 2020. (AP Photo/John Minchillo)

Finally, its odd that our government wasnt concerned about how much blackmail material Epstein had gathered on high-level U.S. officials. Doesnt the FBI try to prevent that sort of situation? Or the Secret Service?

How was it that all these agencies let Epstein keep up his activities for so long?

Theres much more to this story. Stay tuned for next week!

Ann Coulter Continues Trump Attacks, Calls Him Abjectly …

Conservative pundit Ann Coulter continued her ongoing attacks on former president Donald Trump, calling him abjectly stupid in a podcast released Friday.

I was well familiar with what a narcissistic, ridiculous, tacky, vulgar, arriviste this guy was, she said to Dishcast host Andrew Sullivan about the period when she supported the Republican politician. That I knew about. The one thing I underestimated in fact, did not see at all is I had no idea how abjectly stupid the man is.

Coulter wrote In Trump We Trust, E Pluribus Awesome! ahead of the 2016 to make the case for a Trump presidency, but since then, she has publicly disparaged him repeatedly. On Sullivans podcast, she accused the former president of failing his base and failing to keep his promises. She noted that she had supported him in spite of knowing he was narcissistic, ridiculous, tacky [and] vulgar because of his immigration policies, but felt he underperformed there.

My theory was if he doesnt build the wall, he loses reelection. He didnt build the wall; he lost reelection, she said, referring to Trumps proposed wall on the southern border. I just couldnt imagine anyone could be so stupid to run on one thing and just not do it.

Coulter has addressed her Trump criticism in the past, telling a Daily Caller podcast in 2020 that everything came about after she saw these jackass tweets by our jackass president.

She has since praised Democratic President Joe Biden for pulling troops out of Afghanistan.

December Playboy Cover featuring Nude Ann Coulter

It was for a good cause, Coulter, almost 45, explained when Associated Press Extraterrestrial caught up with her, fully loathed, at her undisclosed location.

Q: Why now?

Ann Coulter: My decision to do Playboy is literally one week in the making. I've always chided others for taking their clothes off and posed as the girl next door. I'm the number one right-wing talking head, and for years I've been known as "The Queen of Slime", all while keeping my clothes on, and that's taken some real discipline. Every couple of years when Hef would call I would graciously decline, because it would kill that whole androgynous legend that I've got going for me, and I thought that I could maintain the mystery by keeping my clothes on.

But this year, when I got the call from Hef, it was almost my 45th birthday. The Republican party had just received a humpin', so I thought, "Wow... at 45, America doesn't want us anymore?" And I thought it's almost an epiphany... like a "F--- 'em all!" moment. I feel empowered that you can criticize other people's morals and yet still be single, with no children, sexy and confident, and then bare all for the world.

Q: So what's the story on the androgynous deal?

Coulter: I feel proud of myself. I work out really hard, and people will just have to decide for themselves. The reason that I wanted to do it the most is because I am posing for a purpose: a portion of the proceeds from each issue sold is going to my charity.

Q: That would be...?

Coulter: I am the celebrity spokesperson for WILT, the national anti-erectile function association. It stands for Whitebread Ideology Less Tumescence. If you think about it, this last midterm election in which the Republican Party received such a humpin' was all because of this vast priapism of the party over the last six years that resulted in all the scandals. My charity is devoted to wresting control of erections from the parties and putting them back in the hands of voters. Celibacy is not just for Paris Hilton anymore.

Ann Coulter Turns on Disloyal Actual Retard Trump in …

Ann Coulter went on an early Sunday morning Twitter tear, calling President Donald Trump the most disloyal actual retard that has ever set foot in the Oval Office.

The far-right media pundit and former Trump defender was triggered by the presidents Friday tweet in which he called for Alabama voters to not trust Jeff Sessions and instead put their support behind Sessions Republican Senate seat challenger, football coach Tommy Tuberville.

3 years ago, after Jeff Sessions recused himself, the Fraudulent Mueller Scam began. Alabama, do not trust Jeff Sessions. He let our Country down. Thats why I endorsed Coach Tommy Tuberville (@TTuberville), the true supporter of our #MAGA agenda!, Trump tweeted.

And that set off Coulter, who called Trump a moron, retard and lout, who was incapable of pretending to be a decent, compassionate human being.

Why Liberals Secretly Love Donald Trump – The National Interest

My Twitter accounts pinned tweet is one that says Trump would have elevated his reputation if he had conceded the election quickly; it concludes now people just hope he croaks. The tweet is dated Jan. 4, 2021so elevating the tweet is admittedly a kind of virtue signal: I am not the kind of Trump guy who backed his post-election antics, and Im pleased to have made that clear two days before what one writer aptly called the cornpone intifada.

But the people just hope he croaks line is too vague. The sentiment is shared by never-Trumpers and no small number of once pro-Trump activists and intellectuals who generally approved of his stated policy goals, only to experience a dysfunctional administration that accomplished little. As Ann Coulter (an early and vital Trump supporter) memorably put it, Trump is the opposite of a duck, flailing madly and going nowhere instead of moving quietly ahead in the water.

But it is not shared by Joe Biden, most elected Democrats, and the huge interlocking liberal complex of that makes up the mainstream media: for them, Trump is the best thing ever, someone they can portray effectively as a buffoonish fascist wannabe, while he remains an ineffectual foe with no real sense of how to use power. He is the essential glue and greatest hope of the Democratic coalition, and probably the only Republican a Democrat could defeat in 2024. Indeed, if the Democratic primary electorate moves leftward, as well it might, Trump could conceivably lose to Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, ushering in authoritarian socialist rule in the United States by free election.

Of course, Trump is a useful foil to Biden, whose aging communication skills revive when speaking of his 2020 adversary. But the fixation on Trump and January 6 envelops the whole party. How many times a day does one hearfrom the lips of a Democratic official or a CNN or NPR commentatorthat piously pronounced phrase our democracy to connote all that the January 6 rioters and Trump purportedly threaten. The phrase feigns a reverence to American constitutional practices, which is why Democrats are so enamored of it. But almost invariably it is coupled with transformative action agenda that is the very opposite of constitutional regard: ending the filibuster, packing the Supreme Court, the replacement of an Election Day where self-governing citizens go to the polls and vote by a rolling election period dominated by mail-in ballots and vote harvesting by activists. Such proposals are self-evidently designed to precisely subvert the mechanisms the Founding Fathers intended to encourage: gradualism and the need for decisive majorities to enact major changes into our democracyin other words, to undermine precisely the institutions which have made the United States arguably the most successful long-standing democracy in the world.

Writing for Unherd, Simon Cottee makes some comparisons between the way neoconservatives deployed September 11 as a lever for their long term agendas of war in the Middle East and the way contemporary Democrats are trying to use January 6. But if the goals of the neoconservatives were fairly tightly focused on the invasion of Iraq (and perhaps later Iran), those of todays liberal establishment are diffuse: for some they involve jettison of the checks and balances built into the American system, for others simply a means for the relegation of every aspect of Trumpismincluding the policy aspirations which remain broadly popular permanently into a realm of deplorable moral oblivion. In actuality, January 6 was a riot involving a few hundred mostly unarmed people whose breach of the Capitol was made possible by almost unfathomably poor preparation by riot control police (a critical factor about which we would surely be hearing much more if Trump and his administration bore responsibility for it). The Democrats seek to turn it into world historical insurrection whose nefarious meaning must be contemplated every day, as the New York Times somberly admonishes.

For the Democrats, every day that we talk about January 6 is a day where we are not talking about soaring rates of crime brought about by the progressives war on cops, or inflation accelerating to 1970s levels, or the months of rioting, egged on by prominent Democrats, including then candidates Biden and Kamala Harris, that followed the George Floyd killingrioting far more deadly and destructive than January 6. And every day of January 6 is a way to keep Trump in the spotlight, and in a way keep his persona central to the Republican Party. Its a goal which corresponds perfectly with Trumps own insatiable quest for the limelight; He seems to believe, perhaps correctly, that if he had (as he should have) conceded that he lost the election, albeit one held under unusual covid circumstances, his role as a future party leader would be diminished.

This reinforcing mutual self-interest of two campsthe Democratic establishment and Trump himselfnow constitute a real force in American politics, and possibly a barrier to any kind of enlightened leadership emerging from Republicans for the 2024 presidential race. The easiest way out one doesnt want to say out loud, but it does involve actuarial tables and the fickle finger of health.

Scott McConnell is founding editor of theAmerican Conservativeand author ofEx-Neocon: Dispatches from the Post-9/11 Ideological Wars.

MSU Forms Quantum Alliance with Purdue and University of Michigan – HPCwire

EAST LANSING, Mich., Jan. 7, 2022 Michigan State University has joined Purdue University and the University of Michigan to form a Midwest-based alliance that will push the frontiers of quantum science and engineering research, education and training.

TheMidwest Quantum Collaboratory, or MQC, will foster new cutting-edge projects across the universities, creating new opportunities for leading researchers in quantum computing and information science. MQC will also bolster the universities work preparing their graduates to power the rapidly growing quantum workforce.

Each of the MQC universities is bringing its unique strengths and partnerships to the collaboration to provide even greater training and opportunities for our students, saidAngela K. Wilson, John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor in MSUsCollege of Natural SciencesDepartment of Chemistry.

Although navigating everyday life usually doesnt require expertise in quantum mechanics the science governing atoms and electrons it can revolutionize how we solve a variety of real-world problems. For example, researchers are creating quantum computing hardware and software and that could lead to paradigm shifts in finance, logistics and cybersecurity.

In the future, the use of quantum computers will be everywhere, regardless of field. Quantum computers are predicted to take the place of computers as we now know them, so jobs will become quite prevalent, said Wilson, who is also the director of theMSU Center for Quantum Computing, Science and Engineering, or MSU-Q.

Bringing together three of our nations largest universities and three of the largest quantum computing efforts provides potential employers with a great source of interns and potential employees encompassing a broad range of quantum computing.

Scientists are also developing quantum technology to help better understand fundamental science, improve communications and advance clean energy production. As researchers push the quantum boundaries, they also anticipate new and exciting opportunities.

We scientists are now in a position to start combining these quantum building blocks to quantum applications that have never existed, said the MQCs inaugural director Mackillo Kira, a professor of electrical engineering and computer science and of physics at the University of Michigan.

It is absolutely clear that any such breakthrough will happen only through a broad, diverse and interdisciplinary research effort, he said. MQC has been formed also to build scientific diversity and critical mass needed to address the next steps in quantum science and technology.

We know collaboration is key to driving innovation, especially for quantum, said David Stewart, managing director of the Purdue Quantum Science and Engineering Institute.

The MQC will not only provide students with scientific training, but also develop their interpersonal skills so they will be ready to contribute to a currently shorthanded quantum workforce, Stewart said.

With so much promise, quantum technology has already captured the attention and research investments of many prominent corporations, including IBM, Google, Amazon and Goldman Sachs. MQC is partnering with such companies to help their efforts through scientific collaborations and by introducing them to students and postdocs who have the skills to help drive a growing industrial sector.

The demand for technically skilled quantum employees is exploding, saidJohannes Pollanen, the Jerry Cowen Chair of ExperimentalPhysicsat MSU and associate director of MSU-Q.

Finding qualified employees for these positions is already a critical bottleneck for advancing the quantum information age, he said. MQC is not only pushing the envelope of quantum technology development but also actively working to train this next generation workforce and connect them with the leading companies in the field.

For its part, MSU brings extensive and interdisciplinary expertise in quantum computing technology and algorithms to the table. With decades of experience in these realms, MSU researchers, including Pollanen, have helped start companies and driven the formation of MSU-Q.

Founded in 2019 by Wilson, Pollanen andAndrew Christlieb, an MSU Foundation Professor in the Department ofComputational Mathematics, Science and Engineering, MSU-Q spans departments to strengthen Spartan quantum collaborations. Now, MQC will enable MSU to extend this work beyond campus, joining forces with Purdue and University of Michigan.

Collaborations like the ones were building at MSU-Q and MQC are bringing about a transformative new era in information processing and high-performance computing, said Pollanen. I really see this so-called second quantum revolution as a truly amazing time to be working in the field.

News of the MQC comes on the heels of another recent announcement of a multi-institute quantum initiative supported by the National Science Foundation. Along with Ohio State University and the University of Chicago, MSU is co-leadingQuSTEAM, short for Convergent Undergraduate Education in Quantum Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.

In the past month, Fairfax, Virginia software developer 3Pillar has made a ton of hiring moves, including adding three members to its C-suite.

In mid-December, the company added Ken Krtiz as senior VP of banking and insurance, Chris Hansen as senior VP of communications and Kim Mirazimi as senior VP of commercial sector clients.

At the top, 3Pillar promoted its chief delivery officer David Sawatzky to the role of COO. Jamie Whitacre, previously the senior VP of talent, was also bumped up to the role of chief people officer. And just this week, 3Pillar appointed Jeff Sperber as its new CFO. Sperber was previously the CFO for companies including Class Valuation, TalentReef, NetDocuments and Accenture Mortgage Cadence.

Im thrilled to continue my journey at 3Pillar as we expand our global presence and scale our culture, said Whitacre in a statement. Our next phase of growth is critical in helping us attain our vision of becoming the employer of choice in digital product development services.

EPFL engineers find promising way to boost computing power of quantum computers. – Science Business

Engineers at EPFL have developed a method for reading several qubits the smallest unit of quantum data at the same time. Their discovery paves the way to a new generation of even more powerful quantum computers.

IBM and Google currently have the worlds most powerful quantum computers, says Prof. Edoardo Charbon, head of the Advanced Quantum Architecture Laboratory (AQUA Lab) in EPFLs School of Engineering. IBM has just unveiled a 127-qubit machine, while Googles is 53 qubits. The scope for making quantum computers even faster is limited, however, due to an upper bound on the number of qubits. But a team of engineers led by Charbon, in collaboration with researchers in the U.K., has just developed a promising method for breaking through this technological barrier. Their approach can read qubits more efficiently, meaning more of them can be packed into quantum processors. Their findings appear inNature Electronics.

Biochemistry and cryptography

Quantum computers dont work like the computers were used to. Instead of having a separate processor and memory chip, the two are combined into a single unit known as a qubit. These computers use quantum properties such as superposition and entanglement to perform complicated calculations that regular computers could never do in a reasonable timeframe. Potential applications for quantum computers include biochemistry, cryptography and more. The machines used by research groups today have around a dozen qubits. Our challenge now is to interconnect more qubits into quantum processors were talking hundreds, even thousands in order to boost the computers processing power, says Charbon. The number of qubits is currently limited by the fact that theres no technology yet available that can read all the qubits rapidly. Complicating things further, qubits operate at temperatures close to absolute zero, or 273.15oC, says Charbon. That makes reading and controlling them even harder. What engineers typically do is use machines at room temperature and control each qubit individually.

Its a real breakthrough

Andrea Ruffino, a PhD student at Charbons lab, has developed a method enabling nine qubits to be read simultaneously and effectively. Whats more, his approach could be scaled up to larger qubit matrices. My method is based on using time and frequency domains, he explains. The basic idea is to reduce the number of connections by having three qubits work with a single bond. EPFL doesnt have a quantum computer, but that didnt stop Ruffino. He found a way to emulate qubits and run experiments under nearly the same conditions as those in a quantum computer. I incorporated quantum dots, which are nanometer-sized semiconductor particles, into a transistor. That gave me something that works the same as qubits, says Ruffino. Hes the first PhD student in the AQUA Lab to study this topic for his thesis. Andrea showed that his method works with integrated circuits on regular computer chips, and at temperatures approaching qubit ones, says Charbon. Its a real breakthrough that could lead to systems of large qubit matrices integrated with the necessary electronics. The two types of technology could work together simply, effectively and in a reproducible manner.
