CGV Research | Why Solana May Become the iOS of the Encrypted World? – NewsBTC

by Shigeru, CryptogramVenture FoF Research Fellow

If you have an iPhone and happen to be a fan or active participant of Solanas systems and apps, you may feel a sense of deja vu when you use them separately at many moments.

Do Solana and iOS have a lot in common? It just seems like a hunch. However, after analyzing and comparing the two carefully from the historical and current perspectives, I got an astonishing finding: the previous intuition may be incredibly close to some type of truth. Moreover, a bold prediction came to my mind: one day in the future, Solana may become the iOS in the encrypted world.

In my view, although iOS and Solana belong to the Internet and encrypted worlds, respectively, they share the same logic of the first principle that supports their development. The following conclusions were jointly organized by CGV FOF research team.

User experience, as the core competitiveness of a product, has been mentioned repeatedly. Due to Apples relentless efforts for the ultimate user experience, iOS seems to be always smoother than Android.

Virtual keyboard was not created by iPhone. Microsoft, Palm, and other smartphone manufacturers have tried to promote smartphones with the full touch screen, but iPhone overcame the technical difficulties in capacitive touch screen, multi-touch, improving the screen touch experience to an untouchable level.

For instance, iOS gives first priority for screen response, and it responds to TouchMediaServiceCore architecture in order. Simply put, when the user touches the screen, the system will first handle the screen display (Touch); while the priority response level of Android is ApplicationFrameworkLibraryKernel architecture, and display-related graphics and image processing (Library) are only in the third level. There are a host of similar factors, which directly cause a huge difference in user experience between iOS and Android.

Similarly, although Solana is not the first underlying public chain, it has attracted an increasing number of crypto developers and users by providing extremely high TPS and low transaction fees, breaking through the biggest development constraint that most public chains face in the same period.

Performance comparison between Solana and other mainstream public chains

Data source: RareLiquid

For instance, Solana can deal with over 50,000 transactions per second while maintaining a block time of 400 milliseconds, and improve the TPS based on Moores Law, thus providing a good predictability of TPS scaling. Additionally, Solanas low transaction fees are impressive, that is, estimated $10 for 1 million transactions.

Among them, Solanas core consensus mechanism is Proof of History (PoH), which aims to solve the time problem in a distributed network that lacks a single reliable time source. By using a verifiable delay function, PoH allows each node to generate timestamps locally via SHA256 calculations, which improves overall network efficiency by eliminating the need to broadcast timestamps across the time network.

The user experience of public chains can be reflected by the number of crypto wallets and the frequency of use. Take Phantom, one of the most popular wallets on Solana, as an example, it almost integrates all the features of the Solana ecosystem, including token swaps, collection of NFTs and collectibles, connection to hardware wallets, anti-monitoring, Web3.0 support, and the obtainment of incomes through pledging SOL.

Solana Phantom & Ethereum Metamask monthly active users

Data source: Grayscale Building Blocks

Relying on the excellent one-stop experience, Phantom has become the preferred wallet for the users of Solana, with the monthly active users exceeding 1.2 million. During the two months from August to October 2021, the users of Solana on Phantom increased by 5 times.

The user interface (UI), as a human-computer interaction window for offering various functions required by users, determines whether the software or product is intuitive for users to operate.

iOS has a tight system for platform UI design specifications. From buttons to icon styles, and from image size to resolution, they all require special customization. In this way, it not only unifies the styles of various programs but also helps users to get accustomed to the way of using iOS software. Nowadays, the rounded rectangular design, with only one button on the front and the rest completely covered by a glass panel, has become the iconic design of the iPhone.

The project team should pay attention to UI design whether in the field of Internet, blockchain, or encryption. Besides, a user-oriented UI design will make the product more popular and sell better. Dr. Nielsen, an expert in human-computer interaction, claimed that usability is a prerequisite for survival in the field of the Internet. If a website is difficult to use, then users will immediately abandon it.

Some people say that when they buy tokens, they only look at the logo of the project. Though just a joke, it illustrates the importance of the visual design of the project. The logo of Solana reveals that its team that pays attention to details and has good aesthetic skills.

The logo color of Solana is a gradient from green to purple. Similar colors can be found in nature, such as the aurora borealis, mysterious and elegant. In addition, many cyberpunk-themed sci-fi movies often use purple, green, and blue in their images, reflecting the prospects of Solanas innovative blockchain technology development.

Solana ecosystem (DeFi fields)

Data source: Solanians

Many Solana projects, at first glance, seem to be designed by the same designer, with a very consistent experience in terms of color matching, interface design, and interaction design. The interface is intuitive, concise, and easy to operate. Users can easily operate Solana without much training, as they can understand the functions on the interface at a glance after using the software.

According to CGV FOF, On a well-known Solana IDO platform, the UI performance of a project is given a high assessment priority when reviewing the project. It seems that Solana improves users acceptance of Solana from the top down through its incubation and support of projects with outstanding UI.

Based on the second law of thermodynamics, isolated systems have no energy exchange with the environment and always change spontaneously in the direction of increasing disorder (entropy), i.e., the principle of increase of entropy. In view of this phenomenon, Prigogine, winner of The Nobel Prize in chemistry, proposed that the system must be open to transferring from a disordered state to an ordered structure, that is, the system must exchange matter and energy with the outside world.

The opening of the business ecosystem requires core companies to enable partners to have access to their resources and capabilities, attract them to join the ecosystem, and achieve value co-creation through mutual empowerment.

Since its inception, Apple has attached great importance to external empowerment, providing external developers with powerful development kits and allowing them to connect users through the app store, thus giving birth to a large number of popular apps such as Instagram, Snapchat, Uber, and WhatsApp. Compared with other platforms, Apples release mechanism for developers apps is fairer and more reasonable. The download ranking data on the software store is true and reliable, which has created a good competition system and environment for developers, making developers grasp an accurate understanding of what their users really want.

Solana has also devoted a great deal of effort to ecological construction. Solana has a long-term funding plan to provide excellent projects with a full range of resource support, including targeted funding, VC referrals, technical support, recruitment support, marketing, and legal resources.

Development of Solana and other mainstream public chains for active developers

Data source: Santiment

Take the hackathon for example. In 2021, Solana officially held three global hackathons. The most recent hackathon, with a prize pool of $1 million, over 15,000 registrants, and more than 300 projects submitted by developers across the world, attracted the attention and support of a host of developers and generated a series of quality Solana native apps.

Furthermore, it is worth noting that 90-95% of the hackathon developers expressed their willingness to carry out long-term development on Solana. These talented developers will constantly power the Solana ecosystem.

It may be a bit radical to say that Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, changed the world, but it is fair to say that he was synonymous with the spirit of innovation pursued by the United States and all mankind.

Jobs was a giant standing at the intersection of technology and humanities. His combination of idealism and perfectionism enabled Apple to take a completely different route from the traditional industry.

Take simplicity as an example, Steve Jobs love of minimalism and his exposure to Buddhism, let people directly know their heart without words, exerted a great impact on Apples no button design. In addition to pursuing minimalism in product design, Jobs took the initiative to eliminate many product lines and only launched 1-2 products each year, with the best quality.

In my opinion, Jobs was to Apple what Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) is to Solana. I dont mean to deny Solanas incredible team, which is just as respected as Apples tens of thousands of talented engineers and development teams.

SBF was placed on Forbess list of the richest people in the world 2021

Data source: Forbes

Initially, SBF was a trader and spent his early days at Jane Street, a quantitative giant. He founded Alameda Research (a quantitative trading firm) and FTX (a centralized cryptocurrency exchange) with a team consisting of finance personnelquantitative analysts, engineers, high-frequency traders. They are seldom concerned with the centralization/decentralization debate and focus on the large-scale expansion of the blockchain.

After leaving Jane Street in 2017, SBF took time to think about potential opportunities. He realized that Cryptocurrency has many characteristics, it may be a very inefficient system, and there is a great demand for liquidity. This is basically: sudden huge demand, very rapid growth. So, SBF tried to figure out the ultimate solution to these issues. Later, he discovered Solana.

Anatoly Yakovenko, a co-founder of Solana, once described the scene of SBFs first contact with Solana before it was launched on the mainnet in 2019: During the test, 80 transactions were processed in an average of 4.02 seconds. This result impressed SBF. After communicating with the team and realizing Solanas huge development potential, SBF immediately decided to establish Serum (a decentralized derivatives exchange) based on the Solana.

In this way, Solana not only won a new application project but also got a perfect encryption spokesperson (just like NBA got James). From that day onwards, Solana was reinvented by SBF.

In January 2021, SBF said on Twitter that, Ill buy as much SOL as you have, right now, at $3. Sell me all you want. Though a joke, it revealed that SBF had high hopes for SOL.

I still remember that in those days, iPhone fans lined up in front of the store all night to buy a new generation of iPhone, hoping to be among the first to own the new iPhone, just as they wished to get tickets to a superstar concert.

The iPhone launched by Apple every year is not only a new product but also a brand-new cultural phenomenon. This is a market effect that no other company is likely to have when launching a new product.

Taking the number of Twitter followers as an example, according to statistics from CGV FOF, Solana has as many as 1.1 million followers, which is not as many as that of Ethereum (1.97 million) but ranks first among other mainstream public chains, Polkadot (1.01 million), Avalanche (450,000), Fantom (270,000), and Near (230,000).

Lets take a look at the fan token, Solanas meme coin is Samoyedcoin ($SAMO). It was inspired by Dogecoin, Sam Bankman-Fried (containing the letters S, A, and M), and Solanas co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko (whose hometown is the birthplace of the Samoyed dog). Nowadays, SAMO has become the mascot and promotion ambassador of the Solana ecosystem, and the peak circulation market value of SAMOs token exceeded $700 million.

In the Solana community, you can often feel a completely different atmosphere from any other public chain community. We often see the fierce quarrel between ETH diehards and Solana diehards. It is completely different from the peaceful and joyful atmosphere of the Near, Avalanche, and Fantom communities. This may be the price Solana pays for choosing to take a different path from the ETH (EVM).

It may be a stretch to draw an analogy between Solana and iOS from the above dimensions. Some people are still criticizing the recent instability of the Solana network. But in the long run, through network upgrade, expansion of service nodes, and adjustment of incentive mechanism, these issues will become an episode in the development process of Solana.

In fact, Apples rise did not happen overnight but was accompanied by several important turning points that established Apples status as king.

For example, iPhone 4 was an epoch-making product that made breakthroughs in hardware, software, and design. It was the first cellphone that used the commercial retina screen, completed the dual evolution of cellphone camera hardware and algorithms, featured the most classic shape, and used iPhone self-developed chips

In cosmology, the big bang, generated by a singularity, gave birth to the universe we are familiar with. The singularity is an important turning point in history. The birth of iPhone4 is a singularity in Apples development history, allowing Apple to embark on a rapid development path.

I try to list a few singularities to predict Solanas vision of becoming the iOS in the encrypted world:

The number of C-end users exceeds 100 million. On November 7, 2021, the number of active users of Solanas Phantom wallet amounted to 1 million. It seems like a big leap from 1 million to 100 million. However, the exponential effect of the growth of the encrypted world network will speed up the process considerably. Anatoly Yakovenko, a co-founder of Solana, held a more positive opinion. He has repeatedly stated that with the launch and operation of new technologies, Solanas next goal is to attract one billion users. You know, the number of VISA users worldwide exceeded 3 billion as early as 2018.

Over 80% of the transactions are performed by institutional users. The participation of more institutional users in the encrypted market will attract more capital. The bull market in 2021 is driven by institutions. Many institutions, such as Tesla, Microstrategy, Grayscale, and the ARK founded by Catherine Wood, have entered the encrypted market one after another. SBF deems that the crypto sector driven primarily by potential institutional investment is likely to grow in the next five years. In my opinion, according to the Pareto principle (80/20 rule), if institutional users become the main force of the Solana market, and if their trading volume accounts for more than 80% of the total volume, Solana will usher in a new round of development.

Over a third of Ethereum projects migrate to Solana. In June of this year, Neon Labs, a cross-chain bridge between Ethereum and Solana, was released. Neon allows anyone to run Ether smart contracts on the Solana blockchain, making it easier for developers to build programs that work on both blockchains. It would be an exciting time if more than one-third of the projects that have been deployed and developed on Ethereum are simultaneously building applications on Solana.

Solanas total market capitalization reaches 50% of Ethereums. SBF reckons that Solanas unique underlying technology for developing the DeFi protocol will drive a spike in the price of its SOL tokens. He even believes that Solana can surpass Ether as the largest decentralized financial platform. Ethereums current market value (about $470 billion) is still nearly eight times that of Solana (about $55 billion). If Solana reaches 50% of Ethereums market value, it will be an important milestone in the development of Solana.

The singularities of Solana ecological development (forecast)

Will Solana become the iOS in the encrypted world? Probably nothing.

I very much agree with Kyle Samani, managing partner of Multicoin Capital, I think were going to see two things [Solana and Ethereum] coexist. We have iOS, we have Android. And, today, everyone knows you have to build an iPhone app and an Android app.

Perhaps, in the near future, Solana and Ethereum may become encrypted worlds iOS and Android, respectively. Fortunately, we are all witnesses and participators of this great change.

Organic aggregates: new insights on white light – EurekAlert

image:Strategies for achieving white-light emission from organic aggregates. view more

Credit: The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

White light, which includes multicolored visible components, affects the rhythm of organisms and has the potential for advanced applications in communications, as well as illumination and display. Development and commercialization of white-light emitters based on inorganic diodes and phosphors has progressed rapidly within the past few decades. Organic materials offer better processing and flexibility and are more environmentally friendly, but an effect known as aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) has hindered the development and use of many conventional organic emitters.

In 2001, Ben Zhong Tang's group at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) remarked that some luminogens can strongly emit in the aggregate and solid states, thanks to a photophysical phenomenon they dubbed aggregation-induced emission (AIE), which opposes the troublesome ACQ. AIE has provided the basis for great achievements from fundamental research to advanced functional applications of organic materials, and was listed by the IUPAC as one of the "2020 Top Ten Emerging Technologies in Chemistry."

The expansion of AIE has provided a broad platform for photophysics and advanced materials with versatile properties in the aggregate state. Organic aggregates, which are collective groups of interactive organic molecules, show potential to emit polychromic and white light with high efficiency. However, the picture of strategies and underlying mechanisms for white-light emission from organic aggregates is not yet fully established.

A group led by researchers at HKUST offers a comprehensive picture of white-light emission from organic aggregates. The work surveys strategies for building white-light emitters and ways to bridge the photophysical properties of organic molecules and aggregates, to provide a general platform for practical applications and academic research. As reported inAdvanced Photonics, representative works from single-component and multicomponent perspectives are reviewed, spotlighting practical applications that range from organic light-emitting diodes to white luminescent dyes, and from circularly polarized luminescence to encryption.

The authors also note that much more work is needed to explore the nature of aggregates and extend the application scope of white-light emitters. For instance, current computational methods are as-yet unable to accurately describe inherent luminescent mechanisms at the aggregate level, especially for intermolecular interactions and electron delocalization. The performance of present organic white-light emitters is still far behind many inorganic and organometallic emitters in terms of brightness, efficiency, color quality, and device fabrication. Illuminating the underlying mechanisms and practical applications of organic aggregates promises a rewarding future for efficient white-light emission and aggregate science.

Swiss Army Bans WhatsApp And Other Foreign Encrypted Messaging Services – Lowyat.NET

The Swiss army has instructed personnel to stop using foreign encrypted messaging services such as WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram, the Associated Press reports. It is said that the notice was issued via a letter to top army staff in December, citing privacy concerns based on US authorities ability to access data.

Instead, its top brass has ordered staff to use the Swiss-made Threema app instead. To bring you up to speed, the platform is an open-source premium messaging service that is available on desktop and mobile devices. Threema touts its service to be fully privacy-oriented, featuring its own end-to-end encryption for all of its communications, and does not necessarily require its users to link their phone numbers or email addresses to the app.

Furthermore, the platforms servers are home-based and do not fall under US jurisdiction, unlike most of its competitors. The Swiss army says the Threema app adheres to regulations in Europe about data protection.

It is speculated that the move was decided due to primary concerns regarding the ability of authorities in the US to access data stored by companies that fall under its jurisdiction. These companies are required to adhere to the US CLOUD Act, which requires them to comply with search warrants issued by the US authorities, regardless of where their servers are located.

Meanwhile, Threema has taken pride in the Swiss armys decision to drop all of the foreign messaging apps in favour of its own. From pocket knife to messaging app, the Swiss Army really knows how to equip its personnel with the right tools, the company tweeted.

You’ll have to spell out an encryption law – BollyInside

If the government thinks that unlike a separate law that was passed for International Financial Services Centres, there is no need for a new Bill, and cryptos can be accommodated as an asset by changing various laws which anyway have to be amended even if there is a Bill it should spell it out sooner than later. It may be naive to bet that cryptos would soon wither like tulips. But having let cryptos flourish in the wilderness, the government, somewhat unwittingly, is now working backwards. Left with no choice, it is letting enforcement actions guide the lawmakers when it could have been the other way around. First, it ignored cryptos for years till it couldnt. Second, it underestimated the complexity of cryptos and failed to redraft the old Bill that talked about banning cryptos to table a new Bill in time. And, today, neither the crypto bourses nor investors have a clue what the new Bill would say or whether there would be one.

BitMEX Co-Founder Arthur Hayes Issues Altcoin Warning, Says Everything but Bitcoin and Ethereum Could Crash… – The Daily Hodl

Arthur Hayes, the former chief executive of crypto derivatives exchange BitMEX, is issuing a warning to investors, saying that all crypto assets apart from Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) could see devastating losses.

In a new article, Hayes says that if BTC and ETH dip below $30,000 and $2,000 respectively in the coming months, hed consider dumping all of his other crypto assets as they could see staggering losses.

If I believe that Bitcoin could trade below $30,000 and Ether below $2,000 in a three-to-six month time horizon, I will dump all of my sh*tcoins. That is because Bitcoin and Ether are the highest quality coins, and they will decline less than all their yet-to-be-proven competitors.

Any specific applications that use the Bitcoin or Ether blockchain will also experience gravity at greater than 9.8m/s. These sh*tcoins could go down 75% to 90% in a true crypto risk-off environment.

Hayes also says that if BTC and ETH correct below their previous bull market highs, he would begin to question the value of the two largest crypto assets.

If Bitcoin trades at or below $20,000 or Ether trades at or below $1,400, then I will start to wonder whether these cryptos can preserve their value in energy terms.

Those two levels were the previous all-time highs during the 2017 bull market. But thats the fiat price, if oil goes negative again then who cares if the benchmark cryptos fetch fewer fiat units?

BTC is exchanging hands at $42,014 at time of writing, an 20.98% decrease from its 30-day peak of $50,830 while ETH is trading at $3,134, a 35% decrease from its 30-day high of $4,179.

Joe Rogan Says He’s Back on the Carnivore Diet – menshealth.com

Joe Rogan is starting his year with steak. Lots and lots of steak. The podcaster and MMA commentator announced on Instagram that he will be adhering to the carnivore diet for the entire month of January, a challenge that he has previously participated in which involves eating nothing but meat. This time, however, he is making one minor adjustment.

"January is world carnivore month," he wrote in the caption. "This time Im adding fruit to this diet. Just meat and fruit for the whole month."

The meat-only meal plan generated a lot of buzz in 2018, when Jordan Peterson revealed that he and his daughter Mikhaila live on only steak, water, and the occasional glass of bourbon, and that they have both seen positive health results as an outcome.

Writer Jack Crosbie tried the carnivore diet back in 2018 when it was blowing up as a phenomenon, and documented his experiences. He lost 10 pounds, but also felt so weak and nauseated during a boxing workout that he nearly threw up. "I have zero energy and it feels, literally, like Im punching under water," he said. "Every time I get hit with a body shot, it feels like Im going to vomit out the entire bag of cement (three days of steak) in my stomach."

While nobody is arguing that protein isn't important when it comes to building strength and muscle, eliminating vegetables from your diet as a source of nutrition is a lot harder to justify. "The removal of all vegetables is not something I would personally recommend, said clinical dietitian Scott Hemingway. "Theres very little science if any science to support any negative effects of consuming vegetables on our overall diet... If people find things that make them feel better or that works for them, Im all for supporting that. However, there really is no science to back these claims currently, and theres definitely no research to determine the potential long-term effects, whether beneficial or harmful, on a fad diet like this."

Dietitian Abby Langer, R.D. agreed, telling Men's Health: "Even keto or Atkinsas limited as they arestill include vegetables, and you can still have some low-sugar fruits. But the philosophy of carnivore is that carbs, fruits, and vegetables arent healthy. Yes, youll lose a lot of weight... But thats because youre cutting out every other food except for protein."

Voices: Joe Rogan, ‘mass formation psychosis’ and why people really believe unscientific things – MSN UK

YouTube/PowerfulJRE joerogan_youtube.png

Fans of comedian and political commentator Joe Rogans podcast have been claiming that people are getting vaccinated because of mass formation psychosis after an episode went viral, then got banned. Weak-minded sheeple, the argument goes, have been hypnotized into believing that vaccines work.

On December 31, Rogans Spotify podcast The Joe Rogan Experience, which reaches 11 million people per episode, featured an interview with Dr Robert Malone. Malone is a former vaccine researcher who has become a vaccine skeptic, and he claimed that people were seeking out vaccines because of mass formation psychosis.

Malone also argued that mass formation psychosis explained Hitlers rise. When you have a society that has become decoupled from each other and has free-floating anxiety, he said, their attention gets focused by a leader or a series of events on one small point, just like hypnosis they literally become hypnotized and can be led anywhere.

The mass formation psychosis argument, like the anti-vaccine argument, is complete nonsense. It is not a term used by psychiatrists or researchers. The idea that Hitler used some sort of mass hypnotism has been thoroughly rejected by historians.

Of course, theres also extensive evidence that vaccines do work, and that people need them for protection from Covid as well as a host of other diseases. But the popularity of the mass formation psychosis argument does show the more mundane, less hypnotic ways in which people can be led to false and harmful beliefs. And it underlines how dangerous right-wing media which at this point arguably includes Joe Rogans podcast has become.

If mass formation psychosis isnt a thing, though, how do you explain the enthusiasm with which so many people have embraced the existence of mass formation psychosis? If reactionaries, Joe Rogan fans, and reactionary Joe Rogan fans arent the victims of mass formation psychosis themselves, why on earth do they believe in mass formation psychosis?

Gallery: What people with disabilities wish you knew (Espresso)

The answer is pretty straightforward. You dont need magic powers to make people believe things that arent true. You just need a trusted source to lie to them. Thats especially true if that trusted source is confirming or buttressing a strong group identity like a fandom, or a political party.

Everyone, on every side of politics, engages in motivated reasoning. That means that they are more likely to accept information which makes their own side look good, and more likely to reject information which makes their own side look bad. Conversely, theyre eager to accept information that suggests that their enemies are fools, dupes, or bad actors.

Conservatives arent more likely to engage in motivated reasoning than anyone else, according to researchers. Criticize Biden on social media for completely failing to provide adequate testing, for example, and Democrats will quickly pop up to defend him. But conservative media is more likely to spread misinformation. Thats been especially true with Covid. Right-wing outlets like Fox News have shamelessly pushed conspiracy theories about Covid, to such an extent that those who trust the network are hopelessly misinformed.

Fully 50 percent of people who trust Fox News thought the government was exaggerating Covid deaths, compared to 38 percent of the general population, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation poll in October. Fox News fans also were more likely to believe that self-administering the de-wormer ivermectin was an effective Covid treatment. (It is not, and can cause serious health problems.)

The Joe Rogan Experience isnt exactly part of right-wing media. Rogans brand is amorphous and anti-establishment; he sort of endorsed Bernie Sanders during the 2020 Democratic primary, after all. But hes also associated with the Intellectual Dark Web public figures like Jordan Peterson, Dave Rubin, and Ben Shapiro, who claim the left is silencing free speech and are hostile to social justice movements. And he endorses and uses health supplements of dubious worth, such as Alpha Brain (supposed to increase your neurotransmitters), quercetin, and glucosamine.

Rogans audience is a mix of people who distrust establishment media, people who distrust the left, and people who seek out alternative, scientifically unproven health advice. Not surprisingly, this is a perfect stew for disinformation about a public health crisis that has been intensely politicized by reactionaries.

Rogan himself has embraced ivermectin. And while hes said that hes not anti-vaxx, hes also claimed that young people dont need vaccines. (Young people absolutely should get vaccinated.) His broadcasting of the mass formation psychosis is just another example of how a public figure with a huge platform who is unable or unwilling to vet guests or provide accurate health information can mislead his listeners.

Rogan has apologized for some of his vaccine misinformation by explaining, A lot of times were drinking or were high and I say stupid sh*t. That kind of anti-establishment authenticity is what his fans love. But it doesnt change the fact that hes lying to them about a public health crisis in which 836,000 people in the United States have died. His viewers believe in him, and hes using that belief to put them and their families at risk. The problem isnt mass formation psychosis. The problem is the irresponsibility of people like Joe Rogan and a lot of misplaced trust.

Scientists Say the Universe Itself May Be "Pixelated" – Futurism

Heres a brain teaser for you: scientists are suggesting spacetime may be made out of individual spacetime pixels, instead of being smooth and continuous like it seems.

Rana Adhikari, a professor of physics at Caltech, suggested in a new press blurb that these pixels would be so small that if you were to enlarge things so that it becomes the size of a grain of sand, then atoms would be as large as galaxies.

Adhikaris goal is to reconcile the conventional laws of physics, as determined by general relativity, with the more mysterious world of quantum physics.

Its a seriously mind-bending theory that attempts to explain whether gravity can actually be split up into its individual components, a question that has been keeping quantum physicists up at night for a long time.

Sometimes there is a misinterpretation in science communication that implies quantum mechanics and gravity are irreconcilable, said Cliff Cheung, a Caltech professor of theoretical physics whos working with Adhikari, in the statement. But we know from experiments that we can do quantum mechanics on this planet, which has gravity, so clearly they are consistent.

The devil, as always, is in the detail.

The problems come up when you ask subtle questions about black holes or try to merge the theories at very short distance scales, Cheung added.

In other words, if you were to zoom in on spacetime, would you also find individual photons, which make up light, according to the laws of quantum mechanics? Or would it be a continuous spectrum?

Some scientists suggest individual hypothetical gravitons could make up gravity on the smallest scale. Gravitons are a component of string theory that would resonate at a particular frequency.

But on an even smaller scale than that, scientists are still scratching their heads as to how to unify the laws of general relativity and quantum physics.

If I drop my coffee mug and it falls, Id like to think thats gravity, Adhikari quipped. But, in the same way that temperature is not real but describes how a bunch of molecules are vibrating, spacetime might not be a real thing.

The same may go for spacetime.

It may be that something that arises out of the pixelation of spacetime has just been given the name gravity because we dont yet understand what the guts of spacetime are, he added.

Constraining the Multiverse: Stephen Hawkings Final Theory About the Big Bang – SciTechDaily

Professor Stephen Hawkings final theory on the origin of the universe, which he worked on in collaboration with Professor Thomas Hertog from KU Leuven, was published in 2018 in the Journal of High Energy Physics.

The theory, which was submitted for publication before Hawkings death earlier in 2018, is based on string theory and predicts the universe is finite and far simpler than many current theories about the big bang say.

Professor Hertog, whose work has been supported by the European Research Council, first announced the new theory at a conference at the University of Cambridge in July of 2017, organized on the occasion of Professor Hawkings 75th birthday.

Modern theories of the big bang predict that our local universe came into existence with a brief burst of inflation in other words, a tiny fraction of a second after the big bang itself, the universe expanded at an exponential rate. It is widely believed, however, that once inflation starts, there are regions where it never stops. It is thought that quantum effects can keep inflation going forever in some regions of the universe so that globally, inflation is eternal. The observable part of our universe would then be just a hospitable pocket universe, a region in which inflation has ended and stars and galaxies formed.

The usual theory of eternal inflation predicts that globally our universe is like an infinite fractal, with a mosaic of different pocket universes, separated by an inflating ocean, said Hawking in an interview in 2017. The local laws of physics and chemistry can differ from one pocket universe to another, which together would form a multiverse. But I have never been a fan of the multiverse. If the scale of different universes in the multiverse is large or infinite the theory cant be tested.

In their paper, Hawking and Hertog say this account of eternal inflation as a theory of the big bang is wrong. The problem with the usual account of eternal inflation is that it assumes an existing background universe that evolves according to Einsteins theory of general relativity and treats the quantum effects as small fluctuations around this, said Hertog. However, the dynamics of eternal inflation wipes out the separation between classical and quantum physics. As a consequence, Einsteins theory breaks down in eternal inflation.

We predict that our universe, on the largest scales, is reasonably smooth and globally finite. So it is not a fractal structure, said Hawking.

The theory of eternal inflation that Hawking and Hertog put forward is based on string theory: a branch of theoretical physics that attempts to reconcile gravity and general relativity with quantum physics, in part by describing the fundamental constituents of the universe as tiny vibrating strings. Their approach uses the string theory concept of holography, which postulates that the universe is a large and complex hologram: physical reality in certain 3D spaces can be mathematically reduced to 2D projections on a surface.

Hawking and Hertog developed a variation of this concept of holography to project out the time dimension in eternal inflation. This enabled them to describe eternal inflation without having to rely on Einsteins theory. In the new theory, eternal inflation is reduced to a timeless state defined on a spatial surface at the beginning of time.

When we trace the evolution of our universe backwards in time, at some point we arrive at the threshold of eternal inflation, where our familiar notion of time ceases to have any meaning, said Hertog.

Hawkings earlier no boundary theory predicted that if you go back in time to the beginning of the universe, the universe shrinks and closes off like a sphere, but this new theory represents a step away from the earlier work. Now were saying that there is a boundary in our past, said Hertog.

Hertog and Hawking used their new theory to derive more reliable predictions about the global structure of the universe. They predicted the universe that emerges from eternal inflation on the past boundary is finite and far simpler than the infinite fractal structure predicted by the old theory of eternal inflation.

Their results, if confirmed by further work, would have far-reaching implications for the multiverse paradigm. We are not down to a single, unique universe, but our findings imply a significant reduction of the multiverse, to a much smaller range of possible universes, said Hawking.

This makes the theory more predictive and testable.

Hertog now plans to study the implications of the new theory on smaller scales that are within reach of our space telescopes. He believes that primordial gravitational waves ripples in spacetime generated at the exit from eternal inflation constitute the most promising smoking gun to test the model. The expansion of our universe since the beginning means such gravitational waves would have very long wavelengths, outside the range of the current LIGO detectors. But they might be heard by the planned European space-based gravitational wave observatory, LISA, or seen in future experiments measuring the cosmic microwave background.

MSU forms quantum alliance with Purdue and University of Michigan – MSUToday

Michigan State University has joined Purdue University and the University of Michigan to form a Midwest-based alliance that will push the frontiers of quantum science and engineering research, education and training.

The Midwest Quantum Collaboratory, or MQC, will foster new cutting-edge projects across the universities, creating new opportunities for leading researchers in quantum computing and information science. MQC will also bolster the universities work preparing their graduates to power the rapidly growing quantum workforce.

Each of the MQC universities is bringing its unique strengths and partnerships to the collaboration to provide even greater training and opportunities for our students," said Angela K. Wilson, John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor in MSUs College of Natural Sciences Department of Chemistry.

Although navigating everyday life usually doesnt require expertise in quantum mechanics the science governing atoms and electrons it can revolutionize how we solve a variety of real-world problems. For example, researchers are creating quantum computing hardware and software and that could lead to paradigm shifts in finance, logistics and cybersecurity.

In the future, the use of quantum computers will be everywhere, regardless of field. Quantum computers are predicted to take the place of computers as we now know them, so jobs will become quite prevalent, said Wilson, who is also the director of the MSU Center for Quantum Computing, Science and Engineering, or MSU-Q.

Bringing together three of our nation's largest universities and three of the largest quantum computing efforts provides potential employers with a great source of interns and potential employees encompassing a broad range of quantum computing.

Scientists are also developing quantum technology to help better understand fundamental science, improve communications and advance clean energy production. As researchers push the quantum boundaries, they also anticipate new and exciting opportunities.

"We scientists are now in a position to start combining these quantum building blocks to quantum applications that have never existed," said the MQCs inaugural director Mackillo Kira, a professor of electrical engineering and computer science and of physics at the University of Michigan.

It is absolutely clear that any such breakthrough will happen only through a broad, diverse and interdisciplinary research effort, he said. MQC has been formed also to build scientific diversity and critical mass needed to address the next steps in quantum science and technology.

"We know collaboration is key to driving innovation, especially for quantum," said David Stewart, managing director of the Purdue Quantum Science and Engineering Institute.

The MQC will not only provide students with scientific training, but also develop their interpersonal skills so they will be ready to contribute to a currently shorthanded quantum workforce, Stewart said.

With so much promise, quantum technology has already captured the attention and research investments of many prominent corporations, including IBM, Google, Amazon and Goldman Sachs. MQC is partnering with such companies to help their efforts through scientific collaborations and by introducing them to students and postdocs who have the skills to help drive a growing industrial sector.

The demand for technically skilled quantum employees is exploding, said Johannes Pollanen, the Jerry Cowen Chair of ExperimentalPhysics at MSU and associate director of MSU-Q.

Finding qualified employees for these positions is already a critical bottleneck for advancing the quantum information age, he said. MQC is not only pushing the envelope of quantum technology development but also actively working to train this next generation workforce and connect them with the leading companies in the field.

For its part, MSU brings extensive and interdisciplinary expertise in quantum computing technology and algorithms to the table. With decades of experience in these realms, MSU researchers, including Pollanen, have helped start companies and driven the formation of MSU-Q.

Founded in 2019 by Wilson, Pollanen and Andrew Christlieb, an MSU Foundation Professor in the Department of Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering, MSU-Q spans departments to strengthen Spartan quantum collaborations. Now, MQC will enable MSU to extend this work beyond campus, joining forces with Purdue and University of Michigan.

Collaborations like the ones were building at MSU-Q and MQC are bringing about a transformative new era in information processing and high-performance computing, said Pollanen. I really see this so-called second quantum revolution as a truly amazing time to be working in the field.

News of the MQC comes on the heels of another recent announcement of a multi-institute quantum initiative supported by the National Science Foundation. Along with Ohio State University and the University of Chicago, MSU is co-leading QuSTEAM, short for Convergent Undergraduate Education in Quantum Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.
