How to install NextCloud server on Rocky Linux 8 – Linux Shout

Step by step tutorial to install NextCloud on Rocky Linux 8 for personal cloud storage to store media files and documents using the internet from anywhere; using smartphone or desktop app.

What is Nextcloud?

Nextcloud is a free open source cloud software for the encrypted storage of data in a cloud or on your servers. It is client-server software and forked of another open-source known as OpenCloud. Also, it is a good alternative to cloud storage like Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive, if someone wants a seld-hosted personal cloud solution.

Cloud storage like Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive are very popular nowadays; one of the reasons is the automatic sync of users files to the cloud across different devices, so data is easily accessible and not lost. Well, that facility is also there on Nextcloud.

Although such public cloud storage services are offered by larger companies generally safe and reliable. However, these offers also have disadvantages. They only offer their customers a limited amount of free storage space. If customers need more space to store their data, they have to pay.

NextCloud also offers two-factor authentication to better protect the cloud accounts against unauthorized access. Whereas this personal cloud server can also encrypt data to securely send data remotely, however, to improve the user experience, especially for newcomers, encryption is not enabled by default. Because encryption increases file size by approximately 35%. Further it also comes with Healthcare and HIPAA; GDPR Compliance Kit; Auditing capabilities and File Access Control.

The steps given here will be applicable for other RedHat-based Linux distros such as CentOS, Almalinux, Oracle Linux

Rocky Linux 8 Apache, PHP 7.3, 7.4, 8.0 MySQL 8.0+ or MariaDB 10.2/10.3/10.4/10.5 Non-root sudo user 512MB of RAM

If you have just installed a fresh Rocky Linux server or havent updated it for a while then first run the system update command:

Also, install:

Once the update is completed, also put SELinux in permissive mode, which means disabling it temporarily until the next reboot. This will make sure there will be no unwanted restriction in installing NextCloud.

To check the status:

As one of the requirements of NextCloud is the web server, so for that install Apache, along with that being a PHP based web application also configure the same.

Start and enable Apache services

To check the status:

According to NextCloud, PHP 8.0 is recommended to use. Hence, we go for that because the version via the default repository of Rocky Linux is 7.2. Therefore, we have to add the Remi repo manually to get the latest version.

Install:

Increase PHP Memory limit:

Find memory_limit and set the value to 512M

Save the file: Ctrl+O, hit the Enter key, and then exit: Ctrl+X.

We also need some medium to store the data generated by NextCloud, here we are using MariaDB. However, you can use MySQL, SQLite, Oracle Database, and PostgreSQL as well if you want.

Start and enable the service:

Secure Database:

Follow the text-based wizard.

Create a New Database for NextCloud:

Login:

Create database User:

Create DB:

Give all rights of created DB to use:

Note: Replace yourdb with the database name you want to give, whereas the youruser with the username and yourpasswordwith the password you want to assign.

Visit the official website of NextCloud and then download it. Right-click on the Download button and copy the link address.

unzip the file:

Move the extracted file to /var/www/html/ directory

Create a data folder to store uploaded data in Nextcloud

Now, the give the Nextcloud permission to Apache user:

Lets create an Apache configuration file for NextCloud, to serve the file in case you are using the domain name or multiple websites are running on the same server.

Paste the following lines:

Note: Dont forget to replace cloud.example.com with the domain name you want to use. If you dont have any then leave it as it is.

Restart the Apache web server and set SELinux policies:

Once all the above steps are completed you are ready to access the web interface for setting up NextCloud further on your Rocky Linux 8 system.

Open your browser that can access the domain or IP address of the server where you have installed NextCloud. After that point to the Ip or domain:

Create Admin user and enter Database Details

The first page will ask you to create an Admin user and after that select MySQL/MariaDB as Database. There enter the details of the Database you have created.

After that click on the Finish button.

In the future if you want to upgrade your NextCloud using the command, easily, then here is the command:

Edit php.ini

Scroll to the end of the file:

Save the file using Ctrl+O, hit the Enter key, and then press Ctrl+X

Once you have added

Those who also want to set SSL certificate needto run the following commands:

Note: Make sure in your Domain DNS A record is pointing to the Ip-address where you have installed NextCloud.

Once the SSL certificate has been issued successfully edit your existing Apache Configuration:

Delete existing configuration and add the following one. And dont forget to replace the cloud.example.com with the domain name you want to use access NextCloud.

Save the file by pressing Ctlr+O, hit the Enter key, and then exit the same using Ctrl+X.

In this way, we can install NextCloud on Rocky Linux or in any Redhat-based system such as CentOS, Oracle Linux Although it is a good way to set up your cloud to access files remotely, a few disadvantages are always there. Such as the user will be responsible for maintenance, security, and settings including hardware.

Tesla and Box: Two Focus List Shorts Poised To Payoff – Forbes

My firmsFocus List Stocks: Short Model Portfoliooutperformed the S&P 500 as a short portfolio by 36% in 2021, and 29 out of the 31 picks outperformed. Were starting 2022 by reviewing the two stocks that underperformed last year and their potential returns this year.

Tesla Inc. (TSLA) and Box Inc. (BOX) were the only two Focus List Short stocks that underperformed as shorts in 2021, and I remain bearish on both stocks.

Currently, the Focus List Stocks: Short Model Portfolio holds 28 stocks.

Figure 2 shows a more detailed breakdown of the Model Portfolios performance, which encompasses all the stocks that were in the Model Portfolio at any time in 2021.

Performance includes the performance of stocks currently in the Focus List Stocks: Short Model Portfolio, as well as those removed during the year, which is why the number of stocks in Figure 2 (31) is higher than the number of stocks currently in the Model Portfolio (28).

Below I detail the expectations for future profit growth baked into each of the two stocks, and why I believe each of them is overvalued.

Underperforming Focus List Short Stock 1: Tesla (TSLA): Up 50% vs. S&P 500 Up 27% in 2021

I originally addedTeslato the Focus List Stocks: Short Model Portfolio inNovember 2017, and while it underperformed as a short in 2021, its valuation remains disconnected from the reality of the firms fundamentals and the electric vehicle (EV) market at large.

Main Reason for Short Underperformance: Irrational Investor Exuberance:Tesla bulls continue to pile into the stock on the hopes Tesla will revolutionize not just the auto industry, but energy, software, transportation, insurance, and more, despite evidence to the contrary. The optimistic hopes for these businesses seem to compel investors to buy shares at valuations more suited to science-fiction than investing.

Teslas record vehicle deliveries were a major factor in stock performance in 2021. Selling just under 1 million cars in 2021 sounds great and was no small feat. However, that number is minuscule compared to the number of vehicles Tesla must sell to justify its current stock price anywhere from 16 million to upwards of 46 million depending on average selling price (ASP) assumptions. For reference, Adam Jonas, a Morgan Stanley analyst, projects Tesla will sell8.1 million vehiclesin 2030.

Why I Remain Bearish on Tesla: Valuation Ignores Weakening Competitive Position:The headwinds Tesla faces are numerous (such as therecent recallof half a million vehicles) and outlined in more detail in the reporthere. The biggest challenge to any Tesla bull case is the rising competition from incumbents and startups alike across the global EV market.

Incumbent automakers have spent billions of dollars building out their EV offerings. Indeed, automakers other than Tesla already account for 85% ofglobal EV salesthrough the first half of 2021. The global EV market is simply not big enough for Tesla to achieve the sales expectations in its valuation unless everyone else exits the market.

The bottom line is that it is hard to make a straight-faced argument that in a competitive market, Tesla can achieve the sales its valuation implies.

Reverse DCF Math: Valuation Implies Tesla Will Own 60%+ of the Global Passenger EV Market

At its current average selling price (ASP) per vehicle of ~$51k, Teslas stock price of ~$1,200/share implies the firm will sell 16 million vehicles in 2030 versus ~930k in 2021.That represents 60% of theprojected base case global EV passenger vehicle marketin 2030 and the implied vehicle sales based on lower ASPs look even more unrealistic.

To provide inarguably best-case scenarios for assessing the expectations reflected in Teslas stock price, I assume Tesla achieves profit margins twice as high as Toyota Motor Corp (TM) and quadruples its current auto manufacturing efficiency.Below are the number of vehicles Tesla needs to sell in 2030 to justify ~$1,200/share.

Per Figure 3, Teslas current valuation implies that, in 2030, it will sell the following number of vehicles based on these ASP benchmarks:

If Tesla achieves those EV sales, the implied market share for the company would be the following (assuming global passenger EV sales reach 26 million in 2030, thebase case projection from the IEA):

Tesla Must be More Profitable Than Apple For Investors to Make Money

Here are the assumptions I use in myreverse discounted cash flow (DCF) modelto calculate the implied production levels above.

To justify its current price of ~$1,200/share, Tesla must:

In thisscenario, Tesla generates$789 billionin revenue in 2030, which is 103% of the combined revenues of Toyota, General Motors, Ford (F), Honda Motor Corp (HMC), and Stellantis (STLA) over the TTM.

This scenario also implies Tesla generates $136 billion in net operating profit after-tax (NOPAT) in 2030, or 46% higher than Apples (AAPL) fiscal 2021 NOPAT, which, at $93 billion, is the highest of allcompanies my firm covers.

TSLA Has 59% Downside If Morgan Stanley Is Right About Sales

If I assume Tesla reaches Morgan Stanleys estimate of selling 8.1 million cars in 2030 (which implies a 31% share of the global passenger EV market in 2030), at an ASP of $38k, the stock is worth just $483/share. Details:

the stock is worth just $471/share today 59% downside to the current price.See the math behind this reverse DCF scenario. In this scenario, Tesla grows NOPAT to $60 billion, or nearly 17x its TTM NOPAT, and just 3% below Alphabets (GOOGL) TTM NOPAT.

TSLA Has 88%+ Downside Even with 28% Market Share and Realistic Margins

If I estimate more reasonable (but still very optimistic) margins and market share achievements for Tesla, the stock is worth just $136/share. Heres the math:

the stock is worth just $136/share today an 88% downside to the current price.

In thisscenario, Tesla sells 7.3 million cars (28% of the global passenger EV market in 2030) at an ASP of $38k. I also assume a more realistic NOPAT margin of 8.5% in this scenario. Given the required expansion of plant/manufacturing capabilities and formidable competition, I think Tesla will be lucky to achieve and sustain a margin as high as 8.5% from 2021-2030. If Tesla fails to meet these expectations, then the stock is worth less than $136/share.

Figure 4 compares the firms historical NOPAT to the NOPAT implied in the above scenarios to illustrate just how high the expectations baked into Teslas stock price remain. For additional context, I show Toyotas, General Motors, and Apples TTM NOPAT.

Implied NOPAT In TSLA Share Price

Each of the above scenarios assumes Teslasinvested capitalgrows 14% compounded annually through 2030. For reference, Teslas invested capital grew 53% compounded annually from 2010-2020 and 29% compounded annually from 2015-2020. Invested capital at the end of 3Q21 grew 21% year-over-year (YoY). Teslas property, plant, and equipment has grown even faster, at 58% compounded annually, since 2010.

A 14% CAGR represents 1/4ththe CAGR of Teslas property, plant, and equipment since 2010 and assumes the company can build future plants and produce cars 4x more efficiently than it has so far.

In other words, I aim to provide inarguably best-case scenarios for assessing the expectations for future market share and profits reflected in Teslas stock market valuation.

Underperforming Focus List Short Stock 2: Box Inc. (BOX): Up 45% vs. S&P 500 Up 27% in 2021

I originally addedBoxto the Focus List Stocks: Short Model Portfolio inNovember 2020, and despite the stocks underperformance as a short in 2021, Boxs business continues to lag in an industry filled with large and well-established incumbent operators. The stock price increase in 2021 puts Box shareholders in a more precarious situation than they were in my original Danger Zonereporton the company.

Main Reason for Short Underperformance: Box Returned to Growth:Box beat both top and bottom line in each of its quarterly earnings reports in 2021. After years of slowing revenue growth rates, Box reported YoY revenue growth of 10%, 12% and 14% in fiscal 1Q22, 2Q22, and 3Q22 respectively. In its fiscal 3Q22 earnings report, Box guided for YoY revenue growth of 15% in fiscal 4Q22, which was above consensus estimates of 12% YoY revenue growth.

This return to growth comes at a time when demand for file sharing, collaboration tools, and cloud content storage/management is rising as companies adapt to hybrid work models.

Why Box Remains Boxed Out: Not Profitable In Best of Times:Despite a return to growth, Box remains unprofitable in a cloud/software industry filled with more profitable competitors.

The fact remains thatmost of Boxs target customers already get Box-like services from Microsoft (MSFT), Apple (AAPL), or Google (GOOG), who also offer high-value products such as word processing, spreadsheet/data management, and video conferencing tools. In comparison, Cloud storage is a low-value add-on, and collaboration tools are becoming more ubiquitous.

Box pitches direct integration with Microsoft, Google, and other partners as a selling point. However, once a user is paying for Microsoft and Google, why would they want to pay extra to use an outside app to edit and manage files when they get the same service from within Microsoft and Google?

With this competitive backdrop, bulls should heed caution given that Boxs busines remains unprofitable in, perhaps, one of the best times to be a provider of cloud storage and related software.

Over the TTM, Boxs operating expenses remain 104% of revenue. Per Figure 5, Boxs NOPAT margin of -3% is well below its competitors. Boxsinvested capital turns, a measure of balance sheet efficiency, fall in the middle of the group, and Boxs ROIC ranks last as the only negative ROIC of the group as well.

BOX Peer Profitablity

Box Is Priced to Reach Nearly 56 Million Paying Users, or 340% of Dropbox Paying Users

Given guidance for mid-teens growth rates, investors may think Box has more room to run. However, when I use myreverse DCF modelto quantify the expectations for future growth baked into the firms stock price, I find that Box must grow at double consensus estimates or the stock holds nothing but downside risk.

To justify its current price of $26/share, Box must:

In thisscenario, Box would generate $2.8 billion in revenue in fiscal 2028, which is 3X its TTM revenue and 34% greater than Dropboxs TTM revenue. By dividing the implied revenue in fiscal 2028 of $2.8 billion by the firms fiscal 2021 average revenue per paying user of $50, I arrive at ~56 million implied paying users in fiscal 2028, compared to ~15.5 million in fiscal 2021. 56 million paying users would be 340% of Dropboxs paying users as well.

In the history of the world, the number of companies that grow revenue by 20%+ compounded annually for such a long period isunbelievably rare, which make the expectations baked into Boxs valuation look even more unrealistic.

BOX Has 54%+ Downside if Consensus Is Right: Even if I assume Boxs

the stock is worthjust $12/sharetoday a 54% downside to the current price. This scenario still implies Boxs revenue grows to $1.5 billion in fiscal 2028 and its implied paying users would be 30 million, or nearly 2x its fiscal 2021 paying users. If Box fails to achieve the revenue growth or margin improvement assumed in this scenario, the downside would be even higher.

Figure 6 compares Boxs historical NOPAT to the NOPAT implied by each of the above DCF scenarios. For reference, I include Dropboxs TTM NOPAT as well.

Each of the above scenarios also assumes Box is able to grow revenue, NOPAT, and free cash flow (FCF) without increasing working capital or fixed assets. This assumption is highly unlikely but allows me to create best-case scenarios that demonstrate how high expectations embedded in the current valuation are.

Flashback: Android 4.4 KitKat optimized the OS for phones with just 512MB of RAM – GSMArena.com news – GSMArena.com

Remember when Google used to name Android releases after desserts? It would even put statues of said desserts in front of its office things were fun back then and more importantly, every new release carried major improvements.

Some were major milestones, the likes of Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the version that was so good that it refused to die. Android 4.4 KitKat introduced extensive upgrades as well, which are surprisingly relevant to this day, eight years after its 2013 release.

First, the name this was the first release to be named after a branded snack, all the others are generic desserts. This one was going to follow suit with the Key Lime Pie name, but last minute deal with Nestle gave us the name we know today. Despite this setback, pies will eventually be recognized for their importance on the table with the v9.0 release.

KitKat came after three releases of Jelly Bean, a version that focused on delivering a buttery-smooth UI. Aside from a few UI tweaks of its own, KitKats focus was on improving performance on devices with limited resources.

That was the goal of Project Svelte, which aimed to run Android on as little as 340 MB of RAM, though 512MB was more realistic. Looking back at some statistics, the average phone in 2013 had 1GB of RAM with 3GB being the most that you could buy. This means there were quite a few devices with sub-1 GB of RAM back then and there are such devices even today (okay, they are smartwatches, but the point stands).

Google developers created many tools to shrink RAM usage by the OS and apps. One such tool was zRAM, a compressed segment of RAM where unused data could be stored temporarily to free up room. This is different from the virtual RAM feature you see on current phones, that one leverages the fast internal storage to move data out of RAM. Of course, back in 2013 comparatively slow eMMC was the norm, especially on low-end devices, so such a scheme wouldnt have worked as well as zRAM.

Another major change was the preparation to replace Dalvik VM with the Android Runtime (ART). The Dalvik virtual machine was crucial for early Android as it allowed software to be hardware-agnostic ARM, x86 and even the rare MIPS CPUs were supported. Android 2.2 Froyo introduced Just-in-Time (JIT) compilation to speed up application performance, but after several years Dalvik was starting to show its age.

ART uses Ahead-of-Time compilation, basically compiling the app to the phone CPUs machine code as part of the app installation process. KitKat still used Dalvik by default, it wouldnt be until Lollipop that Android completed the switch over to ART. But ART is still used today and v4.4 laid the groundwork for that.

We may have undersold how much KitKat changed Androids UI as one minor change had a major impact v4.4 allowed users to choose a default launcher in the Settings screen. This was possible in earlier versions, but it was tedious. Now anyone could easily try out different launchers if they werent happy with what the manufacturer skin had to offer.

A few more UI tweaks included adopting a translucent look for certain UI components like the status bar and navigation bar. Immersive mode allowed apps to run in full screen, hiding those two bars completely, along with other OS interface elements. A new transitions framework allowed developers to create cool, smooth animations for their apps.

KitKat added native support for the IR blaster, before that manufacturers were using custom solutions, which were harder for app developers to support. Also, the NFC functionality gained support for host card emulation, allowing the phone to act as a smart card, which is used for mobile payments, loyalty cards, transit passes and so on.

Other new features include wireless printing (over Wi-Fi or online services like Google Cloud Print), the option to certify phones as Miracast compatible, improvements to connections with Bluetooth devices and more.

KitKat made phones more secure by switching SELinux (Security-Enhanced Linux) to enforcing mode, which prevented compromised apps from accessing parts of the system they had no business touching. v4.4 also changed how apps access the memory card and simplified the browsing of local and cloud-stored files.

There are many more tiny improvements that arrived with KitKat. For example, it changed the way how sensor data is tracked to reduce power usage. This also enabled the creation of the step counter feature, which was built into the OS instead of leaving it to apps to implement a power-hungry solution.

KitKats goal was to reach 1 million users. About a year after its release, v4.4 KitKat was already running on one third of Android devices and it wouldnt be until mid-2015 before KitKat caught up with Jelly Bean. It never hit 50% adoption as Lollipop was already out by that time and gobbling up market share. In late 2015 Android was running on 1.4 billion devices in total, so KitKat never got to power a billion devices.

But Android 4.4 KitKats legacy isnt about how many phones it ran on in its heyday. The RAM optimizations that made the OS bearable on low-end devices, the performance and security improvements, plus the new connectivity features it introduced are still relevant even in version 12.

Today’s Quantum Computers – Computer | HowStuffWorks

Quantum computers could one day replace silicon chips, just like the transistor once replaced the vacuum tube. But for now, the technology required to develop such a quantum computer is beyond our reach. Most research in quantum computing is still very theoretical.

The most advanced quantum computers have not gone beyond manipulating more than 16 qubits, meaning that they are a far cry from practical application. However, the potential remains that quantum computers one day could perform, quickly and easily, calculations that are incredibly time-consuming on conventional computers. Several key advancements have been made in quantum computing in the last few years. Let's look at a few of the quantum computers that have been developed.

Los Alamos and MIT researchers managed to spread a single qubit across three nuclear spins in each molecule of a liquid solution of alanine (an amino acid used to analyze quantum state decay) or trichloroethylene (a chlorinated hydrocarbon used for quantum error correction) molecules. Spreading out the qubit made it harder to corrupt, allowing researchers to use entanglement to study interactions between states as an indirect method for analyzing the quantum information.

In March, scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory announced the development of a 7-qubit quantum computer within a single drop of liquid. The quantum computer uses nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to manipulate particles in the atomic nuclei of molecules of trans-crotonic acid, a simple fluid consisting of molecules made up of six hydrogen and four carbon atoms. The NMR is used to apply electromagnetic pulses, which force the particles to line up. These particles in positions parallel or counter to the magnetic field allow the quantum computer to mimic the information-encoding of bits in digital computers.

Researchers at IBM-Almaden Research Center developed what they claimed was the most advanced quantum computer to date in August. The 5-qubit quantum computer was designed to allow the nuclei of five fluorine atoms to interact with each other as qubits, be programmed by radio frequency pulses and be detected by NMR instruments similar to those used in hospitals (see How Magnetic Resonance Imaging Works for details). Led by Dr. Isaac Chuang, the IBM team was able to solve in one step a mathematical problem that would take conventional computers repeated cycles. The problem, called order-finding, involves finding the period of a particular function, a typical aspect of many mathematical problems involved in cryptography.

Scientists from IBM and Stanford University successfully demonstrated Shor's Algorithm on a quantum computer. Shor's Algorithm is a method for finding the prime factors of numbers (which plays an intrinsic role in cryptography). They used a 7-qubit computer to find the factors of 15. The computer correctly deduced that the prime factors were 3 and 5.

The Institute of Quantum Optics and Quantum Information at the University of Innsbruck announced that scientists had created the first qubyte, or series of 8 qubits, using ion traps.

Scientists in Waterloo and Massachusetts devised methods for quantum control on a 12-qubit system. Quantum control becomes more complex as systems employ more qubits.

Canadian startup company D-Wave demonstrated a 16-qubit quantum computer. The computer solved a sudoku puzzle and other pattern matching problems. The company claims it will produce practical systems by 2008. Skeptics believe practical quantum computers are still decades away, that the system D-Wave has created isn't scaleable, and that many of the claims on D-Wave's Web site are simply impossible (or at least impossible to know for certain given our understanding of quantum mechanics).

If functional quantum computers can be built, they will be valuable in factoring large numbers, and therefore extremely useful for decoding and encoding secret information. If one were to be built today, no information on the Internet would be safe. Our current methods of encryption are simple compared to the complicated methods possible in quantum computers. Quantum computers could also be used to search large databases in a fraction of the time that it would take a conventional computer. Other applications could include using quantum computers to study quantum mechanics, or even to design other quantum computers.

But quantum computing is still in its early stages of development, and many computer scientists believe the technology needed to create a practical quantum computer is years away. Quantum computers must have at least several dozen qubits to be able to solve real-world problems, and thus serve as a viable computing method.

White House Tweaks Immigration Rules to Attract STEM Talent

The White House announced a series of immigration policy changes on Jan. 21 that aim to improve the ability of the U.S. to attract and retain international STEM talent. Among the actions, the administration has added 22 new STEM fields to the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program, which allows international students to work in the U.S. after graduation for a period of time. The announcement states that the added fields of study are primarily new multidisciplinary or emerging fields, and are critical in attracting talent to support U.S. economic growth and technological competitiveness. Among them are bioenergy, climate and Earth system sciences, cloud computing, data science and visualization, and human-centered technology design, which encompasses fields such as human-computer interaction and neuroscience. Students in the listed fields will now be eligible for a 24-month extension of their time in the OPT program, beyond the regular 12-month duration for non-STEM students.

Other announced steps include changes to eligibility guidance for O-1A visas, which are conferred to persons of extraordinary ability in certain fields. Specifically, the Department of Homeland Security updated its policy manual on O-1A visas to provide examples of evidence applicants can submit to demonstrate STEM expertise. Separately, the administration is seeking to promote educational exchanges through a new State Department-led Early Career STEM Research Initiative that will facilitate non-immigrant visitors engagement in STEM through research or training with host organizations, including businesses. The department has also announced that STEM undergraduate and graduate students on J-1 visas can receive up to 36 months of academic training, up from the current cap of 18 months.

A federal judge dismissed charges against MIT nanoengineering professor Gang Chen on Jan. 20 after Department of Justice prosecutors concluded they could not prove he committed grant fraud and other crimes related to the concealment of connections with Chinese institutions. According to reports, DOJ reached its decision after learning from the Department of Energy that the connections prosecutors accused Chen of hiding did not need to be disclosed in 2017, when he applied for the DOE grant in question, and that they would not have affected his eligibility for funding. On Jan. 21, Chen published an op-ed in the Boston Globe calling for DOJ and Congress to review his case, arguing that investigators and prosecutors twisted evidence against him and committed glaring misconduct by failing to obtain, consider, and turn over exculpatory information. He also added his voice to a growing chorus condemning DOJs pursuit of cases against academics based on alleged nondisclosures of foreign ties, writing that the departments misguided theory of prosecution could likely apply to thousands of professors who failed to list every routine professional activity with any entity in a foreign nation (which was not a requirement at the time).

The Department of Justice announced on Jan. 21 that former University of Arkansas electrical engineering professor Simon Ang has pleaded guilty to lying to federal investigators about being named as an inventor on Chinese patents. In exchange, the department will drop dozens of other counts, most of which involve allegations of fraud committed against NASA and the U.S. Air Force stemming from his nondisclosure of ties to Chinese businesses and receipt of funding from Chinese talent programs. Angs lawyer told the journal Science that the patents in question had no monetary value and he was serving as an adviser to a Singapore-based company owned by his brother. The lawyer also said Ang agreed to serve a prison sentence of one year and one day because that is the minimum length conferring eligibility for early release, and that at age 64 he has no plans to seek reinstatement by the university, which fired him two months after his arrest in July 2020.

The White House announced last week that President Biden will nominate Katy Huff to lead the Department of Energys Office of Nuclear Energy, a role she had filled on an acting basis since last May. Given hernomination, DOE career official Andrew Griffith has taken over as acting head of the office and Huff is now serving as a senior advisor to the energy secretary. Huff is on leave from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she is an assistant professor in the Department of Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering. She received her doctorate in nuclear engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2013. In her time at DOE, she has advocated for aggressive development of advanced nuclear reactors, including through construction of the Versatile Test Reactor, a proposed user facility for exposing reactor components and materials to conditions comparable to those that would exist in new reactor designs.

The House Science Committee advanced an amended version of the National Nuclear University Research Infrastructure Reinvestment Act by voice vote last week. The bill wouldrecommend Congress provide $600 million to the Department of Energy over eight years to establish new nuclear facilities at universities. Specifically, it would direct DOE to carry out a subprogram that funds advanced nuclear reactor concept demonstrations, construction of medical isotope production reactors, and construction of up to four research reactors, among other activities. The bill furtherinstructs that the subprogram support regional consortia that encourage the participation of minority-serving institutions, community colleges, and universities in EPSCoR states. Among amendments the committee adopted, one by Energy Subcommittee Chair Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) authorizes DOE to support non-technical nuclear research, defined to include areas such as social sciences or law that can support an increase in community engagement, participation, and confidence in nuclear energy systems, including the navigation of the licensing required for advanced reactor deployment.

President Biden met with the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology last week following a meeting of the council, which focused on efforts to improve monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate innovation in energy technology. According to a readout of the event, PCAST briefed Biden on four areas it is currently examining: protecting against physical and financial risks from climate change; using science and technology to detect, track, and fight wildfires; reimagining the U.S. public health system to address decades-old challenges laid bare by the pandemic; and ensuring U.S. leadership in science and technology innovation. Prior to the meeting, Biden remarked on the importance of science in decision-making. Its essential that science and scientific integrity are again taken seriously and are at the center of what were about as a nation; that scientists have a seat at the table, every table in the government, he said.

Within a wide-ranging executive order last week on cybersecurity of national security networks, President Biden directed relevant agencies to identify within 180 days any instances where they are using encryption methods that are not resistant to hacking by quantum computers and to provide a timeline for transitioning such systems to compliant encryption methods. The National Security Agency has promoted the adoption of such algorithms for years to hedge against the potential development of a quantum computer capable of breaking current encryption schemes. Although NSA has stated it does not know when or even if such a computer will be developed, security researchers have raised concerns that hackers could steal presently encrypted data and store it away for decades until a quantum computer capable of breaking the encryption is developed. NSA plans to eventually adopt post-quantum encryption methods selected by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which is currently evaluating candidate algorithms.

Tribes fighting for salmon on Skagit River say $30M spent by Seattle on dam relicensing is ‘mind-boggling’ – KING5.com

DARRINGTON, Wash. In its quest to relicense its hydroelectric dams on the Skagit River, Seattle City Lighthas spent approximately $30 million, records show.

The vast majority has gone toward paying scientific specialists, but other expenses include paying consultants to facilitate virtual meetings, craft strategic communications and provide legal advice. Seven law firms, as well as inside counsel, have been involved in the dam relicensing and associated lawsuits filed in response to the process.

City Light pays some attorneys as much as $700 per hour, legal contracts show.

The rural tribes of the Skagit Valley, who have depended on the river and the salmon in it since time immemorial, say the amount the city has spent is "astonishing." Theyve beenat odds with Seattle City Light throughout the relicensing process over how best to operate the dams under conditions of a new license.

Tribal members say theyre fighting to bring back salmon that are on the brink of extinction and Seattles dams are part of the problem. One tribal elder called the amount of money "mind-boggling" and said the process is "bleeding every resource" from the tribes as they try to keep up with meetings, legal input and deadlines.

Seattle City Light CEO and General Manager Debra Smith said she understands the frustration of tribes that have limited resources.

Thats challenging, Smith said.

To offset expenses, City Light offered the three participating treaty tribes $25,000 each to participate in the process more easily. One tribe, the La Conner-based Swinomish Tribe, accepted the offer. The Upper Skagit Indian Tribe and theSauk-Suiattle Tribe declined. Tribal representatives said the amount was too small to be of consequence and could give the appearance of a conflict of interest.

It was kind of offensive to the tribe, Sauk-Suiattleattorney Jack Fiander said. It looks like youve been bought off for $25,000. The tribe wasnt willing to accept that because it would look like a conflict of interest when youre taking the money.

Smith said the offer was made in good faith.

Im sorry that (the tribes) feel that way. Certainly, the intent was never to insult, Smith said.

The Sauk-Suiattle Indian Tribe, located in Darrington, is one of the smallest and poorest of all tribes in the state.

Wow, [$30 million is] a lot of money, said Robert Howard, general manager of the Sauk-Suiattle Tribe. Just to avoid doing the right thing? They could have taken that [money] and applied it to something equitable, something fair, something that sustains the environment and sustains the salmon. Thats hard to understand.

For nearly 100 years, Seattle City Light has operatedthree dams on the Skagit River to provide roughly 20% of the citys electricity. When the dams were built, no one consulted the Native Americans. According to the Upper Skagit Indian Tribe, construction desecrated ancestral burial grounds and important cultural sites. The dams create reservoirs that now cover up sacred lands that are no longer accessible to tribal members.

The dams also block off nearly 40% of the river to salmon species in dire need of additional habitat to spawn, grow and recover.

Seattles dams - Gorge, Diablo, and Ross - are some of the few in the region that do not include infrastructure to allow fish to get above and below the project. The tribes and government natural resource agencies say the dams harm salmon and starving orcas that depend on Chinook salmon from the Skagit for food.

[Seattles paying] hired guns. Im sure thats their job, but were a small tribe. Our total tribal budget is a fraction of that, and yet were standing up. And yet, were trying to do something from our standpoint for the great good of everybody, Howard said.

Relicensing dams through thefederal government is a highly regulated process that requires years of negotiations, scientific study and legal filings. Seattle began working on initial steps in 2018. The city has budgeted nearly $70 million for the entire relicensing through 2026. Much of the money will fund scientific studies that stakeholders asked City Light to undertake.

Smith of City Light said the utility is being a good steward of taxpayer money and is spending what is necessary to ensure a high-quality license that will last between 30 and 50 years.

The most important thing is for us is to come through this process with constructive relationships with the partners that weve been working with for years and we will be working with for many years to come. [We want] to come through with a license that supports the ecosystem, supports the fish, supports people, air, birds, water, you name it, Smith said.

Seattle City Light: No evil intent

Smith conceded the first two years of negotiations were laden with conflict and there was little progress as utility representatives made strategic mistakes by not listening well enough to stakeholder concerns and viewpoints. Those groups include the three treaty tribes, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, the National Park Service, NOAA Fisheries, Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife and Skagit County government.

Clearly, things were not going the way they needed to. Were those dollars that were being spent at the time being spent in the most productive way? No. Thats why we made the change that we made, Smith said. We have no evil intent. We are just as capable as anyone else of misstepping. But the thing I want people to know about me more than anything is that if I misstep, Ill step back and fix what I broke and apologize and move on.

Seattle receives millions in salmon project funding

Since the city began the dam relicensing process in 2018, the utility has been spending and asking for money. Between 2018 and 2020, the state has funded six grant requests from Seattle City Light, according to the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office.

The grants total approximately $4 million and, according to state documents, are to be used for acquiring land to protect high-quality Chinook habitat in the Skagit River system.

Critics say when Seattle accepts state money, other groups suffer the consequences.

Unfortunately, what happens in Seattle doesnt stay in Seattle it impacts the whole state, costing taxpayers and salmon on projects that dont get done elsewhere, said Todd Myers, director of the Center for the Environment at the Washington Policy Center. Myers is also a member of the Puget Sound Salmon Recovery Council.

Between 2018 and 2020, dozens of smaller groups had their salmon recovery grant proposals rejected, state records show. Those include proposals from the Lummi Nation, the Nez Perce Tribe, the Quileute Tribe of the Quileute, the Asotin County Conservation District, the Nooksack Tribe, the city of Bellingham, the Chehalis Basin Land Trust and the Nisqually Land Trust.

Other parts of the state, rural areas, where salmon recovery and salmon projects are very important, they dont have those deep pockets. So, when you take money away from the state that could go to those places you are really doubly harming areas that desperately need that money and where salmon need habitat.

Smith said the city does not have unlimited resources, and the utility will not apologize for accepting state funding it's entitled to.

A lot of times we have projects that are really important, and they meet the [grant] criteria, Smith said. So, I dont feel bad for applying for those types of grants. We dont always get them. There are far more instances where we didnt get them and where weve wondered the same thing: 'Wow, how come we werent successful?' But when we are, I feel like thats a good thing and well continue to [apply].

Tribal members said theres no price you can put on the Skagit River and the salmon who call it home.

You can spend a billion dollars on this issue and were still going to fight as long as its going to take to ensure that the world knows whats happening here. To ensure that the local stakeholders and just common folks understand whats right, said Howard of the Sauk-Suiattle Tribe. Doing the right thing doesnt have to have that big of a price tag. Just do whats right.

Smith said City Light is now on a positive, cost-efficient path with tribes and agencies dedicated to the Skagit Project relicensing.

I feel like were in a very good place. Were being frugal, were being careful, Smith said. We wouldnt be where we are today with our partners had we not [reset our approach].

Michael J. Thorpy, MD:You mentioned relaxation. Erinn, what about some of these techniques like relaxation, mindfulness, treatment, yoga, hypnotherapy, for example? Have you found any of these to be useful in your population?

Erinn E. Beagin, MD: Some of the relaxation techniques in bed, trying to get peoples minds off of catastrophizing. Oh, my gosh, somebody mentioned looking at the clock. Oh, if I dont fall asleep in the next 5 minutes then Im only going to have 3 hours of sleeping. Getting your mind off of thinking of other things is important. I found just even 5 15-minute apps. We try to tell people not to bring the phone into the bedroom with them, but if they can find a meditation that concentrates on deep breathing, get them thinking about something other than the fact that theyre not sleeping. I think that there is a role for that exercise throughout the day, not too close to bed. I do find that some of my patients, and its a combination therapy, but some people, if they exercise more during the day, yes, they might be able to fall asleep. Their bodys more ready to fall asleep. Theyve taken that hour to themselves to have all their catastrophizing thoughts during the day about their sleep so that they can lay down. Deep breathing. Just various techniques. I think the internet has become helpful with that. I dont think its the end-all-be-all. Its not CBTI [cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia]. Its not necessarily going to take the place of that, but I think it does at least give them something else to do and think about. And the other thing I tell people is that The bed is for sleep and sex only. If these dont happen in 20 minutes, get out. Thus, Ill tell people like, If you need to do that meditation, get out, and do the meditation. Like Vikas was saying, I want you to see that bed and your body to feel sleepy. That Pavlovs dog-type situation instead of seeing that bed and saying, Its another night that Im not going to sleep and immediately youre into that negative headspace. Doing some of these certain things inside the bed to help relax and tune down your body and turn it down. One of the other simple things I tell people to do, keep a pen and paper next to your bed. How many you know people say, Oh, my gosh. I wake up and I think oh, I have to remember to do this and then I have to remember this and this. And then, they wake themselves up because now theyre memorizing the list and now, theyre really getting themselves going. Thus, I tell people, Dont be afraid to quiet your mind down. Try not to be constantly thinking. Try some relaxation breathing. I think it can be useful in some patients absolutely.

Michael J. Thorpy, MD:Good. Karl, how about hypnosis and acupuncture? Any thoughts on those? Are they useful at all?

Karl Doghramji, MD: Believe it or not, theres some papers that suggest that they areacupuncture and hypnosis. Of course, there are difficulties finding trained therapists who can do these things. Of course, none of us here [are] trained to do acupuncture. In addition, biofeedback and relaxation techniques that diminish the activation of the mind and to direct signals that are provided in audio format have been known to be helpful. I also want to stress the importance of maybe broadening the discussion in the case of some insomniacs. These are worriers, right. Insomniacs tend to worry in general. Not just about their sleep but they tend to worry about everything. And sometimes, their worries are a result of family concerns, interpersonal concerns, their occupation, COVID-19, so on and so forth. I found it useful sometimes to expand the scope of the discussion from the immediate sleep issues to maybe some of their lives and to talk about what are their other concerns. Interestingly, I found some patients really benefit from that in terms of their sleep.

According to Google, Disney’s Tallest Ride is at a Competitors Theme Park – Inside the Magic

If you are looking for the tallest ride at Disney World Resort, you may start to guess that Tower or Terror of Expedition Everest would take the cake. That being said, both rides are in very close range of being the tallest ride at Disney, so to settle the debate, the majority of people would Google the answer.

Well, get ready to have your mind blown because Google will have you looking a little outside the Disney bubble to find the tallest ride at Disney World! When you Google tallest ride at Disney World, Googles top suggested, answer is actually Iron Gwazi, the newly refurbished Busch Gardens Tampa coaster that is set to debut on March 11. The coaster hits a height of 207 feet, which actually clears both Tower of Terror and Expedition Everest in terms of height, which is quite hilarious!

Interestingly enough, from this answer, we can see that the new Busch Gardens coaster will actually have a higher top hat than Universal Orlando Resorts VelociCoaster, sending thrill junkies to Tampa Bay and away from some of the Orlando theme park action!

But what IS the tallest ride at Walt Disney World? Well, as you may imagine, it is not Iron Gwazi. Tower of Terror at Disneys Hollywood Studios was measured as the tallest attraction at 199 feet, but when Joe Rohde was building Expedition Everest and had his ride sitting at 199 feet, he wanted to do something to make it taller. So, the Imagineer added some extra material to the top of the mountain to give it a height of 199.5 feet, leaving it to be the tallest Disney World attraction.

Any attraction that measures at 200 feet or higher would need to have a light on top for aircrafts, which is why Disney has always been forced to keep the rides under a certain height so that Guests will not be distracted by a safety light and pulled from the immersive nature of the attraction.

There’s No Science Argument on Whether Unborn Children Are Human – Walter Bradley Center for Natural and Artificial Intelligence

The recent March for Life in Washington featured signs like Save the baby humans (featuring a whale), Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love Mother Theresa and One heart stops; many hearts break.

Neurosurgeon Michael Egnor has a message for people who wonder whether the preborn child is a human being:

Ever ask #Why we should believe that a human embryo is a human life? There is no question about itfrom the moment of conception, a unique human being exists. Pro-abortion activists will try to say that the embryo is a different species, some unclassified thing, or part of the mother, but none of these are true. The science of sexual reproduction is as much settled science as is the fact that the Earth orbits the sun and that DNA carries genetic code. There is no debate that life begins at conception. The only debate is whether people respect life at all stages. (Students for Life, July 26, 2021)

Egnor has also written some personal reflections on abortion, including the fact that he himself might have been aborted:

The world is blessed with countless people who, with Gods grace, had moms and dads who chose life instead of death. Im one of them my mom had severe hypertension and doctors recommended I be aborted, but she and my dad refused. I owe my life to their love for me, even before I was born.

He also recounts that, while he always tells the truth to parents about their unborn babies neurological issues as he understands them, sometimes the children surprise him:

Just recently, I saw a 10 year old girl in the office for whom Ive cared since she was in the womb. When her spina bifida was diagnosed by prenatal testing, the doctor basically insisted that she be aborted. It was relatively late in the pregnancy, and the doctor gave them the name of George Tiller, a notorious late-term abortionist in Kansas who aborted babies at an age when even the most callous of other abortionists refuse to kill. Her family declined, and sought me out as a second opinion. I told them the truth about their daughters prognosis which was guarded but by no means hopeless.

As it turned out, I was wrong. She did indeed have spina bifida and I operated on her the day she was born. But she has done much better than any of us even dreamed. She walks, runs, and loves to dance. She is bright and charming, and is the love and light of her mom, dad, and her doting older brothers. I give talks to medical professionals about neurosurgical prenatal diagnoses and at the end of the talks I show a video clip of her dancing.

There is another aspect of abortion that explicitly involves neuroscience: Do unborn children feel pain? Alas, yes:

The argument commonly used by abortion advocates, and by physicians and scientists, who argue that fetuses do not experience pain, is that the central nervous system is too immature to process pain at that age. But I think that thats clearly a misunderstanding of the neurobiology.

Pain, as far as we know, is the only sensory modality that does not require cortical representation to be experienced. That is, it seems that we probably feel pain at deeper levels of the brain, probably at the level of the thalamus. And what the cortex does, is it actually suppresses our experience of pain and helps us interpret it. So decorticate animals seem to experience pain much, much more intensely. The thalamus in fetal life develops around the sixth or eighth week of fetal development. And the thalamic tracks that connect the thalamus to the periphery, that would allow the fetus to feel pain, are present at that stage.

A recent medical journal article confirmed that there is clear scientific evidence that pain is felt from 13 weeks gestation onward. Egnor responded:

The scientific community has for decades misrepresented the straightforward science of conception and fetal development for ideological reasons

I have cared for hundreds of premature infants and it is very clear that these very young children experience pain intensely. An innocuous needlestick in the heel to draw small amount of blood would ordinarily not be particularly painful for an adult. But a tiny infant will scream at such discomfort.

Many Americans do not realize that most Western countries have restrictions on abortion. The United States is one of the few where children be aborted up to the time of birth in many states and, if they survive, may legally be left to die after birth. Currently, the federal government is even working on an act that would remove all state-level protections for unborn children at any age.
