Spotify agrees to take Neil Young’s music off the platform – KDRV

CNN political commentator Scott Jennings and cultural commentator C.J. Farley discuss Spotify removing Neil Young's songs after he issued an ultimatum to the company over misinformation on Joe Rogan's podcast.

(CNN) --Prince Harry and Meghan Marklehave expressed their "concerns" to Spotify over Covid-19 misinformation on the platform, joining a growing group of personalities putting pressure on the streaming service amid a dispute about Joe Rogan's controversial podcast.

The pair first raised the issue last April and have continued to urge Spotify to root out misinformation, a spokesperson for their foundation, Archewell, said on Sunday.

Their invention comes after Neil Young and Joni Mitchell both asked Spotify to pulltheir music from the platform, objecting to its popular "Joe Rogan Experience" podcast in which the host has made frequent false and inaccurate claims surrounding vaccines and Covid-19.

"Last April, our co-founders began expressing concerns to our partners at Spotify about the all too real consequences of COVID-19 misinformation on its platform," an Archewell spokesperson said in a statement. "We have continued to express our concerns to Spotify to ensure changes to its platform are made to help address this public health crisis."

"We look to Spotify to meet this moment and are committed to continuing our work together as it does," the spokesperson added. The statement did not specifically mention Rogan's show.

CNN has contacted Spotify for comment, but has yet to receive a response.

The Sussexes are among Spotify's most notable audio personalities, having announced an exclusive partnership with the service in December 2020. In a news release, Spotify said the pair "will host and produce podcasts that build community through shared experience, narratives, and values."

The multi-year partnership with Spotify includes numerous programs, some hosted and others produced by the duke and duchess.

Their reach is dwarfed by Rogan's popular show, which has long been a hit with listeners but has drawn scorn from the scientific community.

Earlier this month, a group of more than 250 scientists, doctors and nursespenned an open letter to Spotifycondemning the streamer for platforming Rogan and calling on Spotify to warn its listeners about misinformation. The host has suggested that healthy young people should not necessarily be vaccinated against Covid-19, and a recent episode with Jordan Peterson was also mockedfor airing misinformation about climate change.

"Since the inception of Archewell, we have worked to address the real-time global misinformation crisis," a spokesperson for the foundation said. "Hundreds of millions of people are affected by the serious harms of rampant mis- and disinformation every day."

The Purdue College of Engineering faculty members Gary Cheng, Karl Smith and John Sutherland were honored for their significant efforts toward advancing science applications that are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished. Cheng, professor of industrial engineering with a courtesy appointment in materials science engineering. She was the first but she doesnt want to be the last!

Ohio State Universitys first Black woman engineering head is committed to increasing diversity in the field, NBC4i reports.

It was just a year ago when Dr. Ayanna Howard made history as the first Black woman dean of Ohio State Universitys (OSU) College of Engineering. Howard owns her own robotics company and has previously worked for NASA and served as lead of the robotics program at Georgia Tech. While engineering is her passion and shes grateful for all the opportunities shes received, her accomplishments alone arent enough, and Howard is committed to paving the way for more women of color to enter into the sector.

I see it as an opportunity, and one of the things, I take it as a challenge, is I lean into that, explained Howard.

For her, the Columbus campus is the best place to start. Currently, about 23 percent of undergraduate enrollment are female engineering students, with only 10 percent of those being underrepresented minorities. Howard hopes to increase that number during her time at OSU, focusing on teaching and inspiring young girls and minorities across the Columbus area, with the hope of growing interest in the Bachelor Science and Engineering Technology program.

If you are underrepresented, especially Black female intersectionality, you might have straight As in math and science, but you do not see yourself as an engineer or [in] computer science, Howard said.

That is where she comes in. Howard hopes to serve as a role model for other women of color to let them know that the career track in engineering for them is possible and attainable. Although Howard is the first Black woman head at Ohio State, she is not the only, with more than 80 women leading engineering colleges, schools, and programs across the nation. Not only does Howard think the time has come for change, she also believes that people are ready for change.

One of the nice things is that the faculty, staff, students and alums are excited about this new growth and all the things that are coming in the future, said Howard.

Trickbot will now try to crash researcher PCs to stop reverse engineering attempts – ZDNet

The Trickbot Trojan has been revised with a new set of anti-reverse engineering features including the capability to crash computers if analysis tools are detected.

Over the years, Trickbot has evolved from its original state as a banking Trojan to a wider suite of malicious components.

Following the retirement of Dyre in 2016 and the disruption of the Emotet botnet by law enforcement in 2021, Trickbot has filled the gap for many threat actors and is now used to steal financial data and to facilitate the execution of ransomware and due to its versatile, modular nature, has also become a popular option for deploying other forms of malware.

"Between takedown attempts and a global pandemic, it has been diversifying its monetization models and growing stronger," researchers from IBM Trusteer say.

In a new report on the malware's current development, IBM Trusteer has found that the malware's usage continues to escalate and samples of recent Trickbot injections have revealed new features designed to prevent analysis.

Reverse engineering in cybersecurity aims to dissect a malware sample, dismantling the code to find out how it operates -- and potentially how to defend against it. There are three major lines of defense used by the malware to try and prevent reverse engineering from being successful outside of typical obfuscation.

The first trick used by the Trojan is the use of server-side injections, rather than loading them from infected machines.

"Keeping injections on infected machines means they are more likely to land in the hands of security researchers," the researchers explained. "Injections kept locally are also less agile and harder to manipulate in real-time. To move beyond these risks, Trickbot's operators inject from their server, known as server-side injections. To facilitate fetching the right injection at the right moment, the resident Trickbot malware uses a downloader or a JavaScript (JS) loader to communicate with its inject server."

The second method of note is the use of HTTPS communication when injections are fetched from Trickbot's command-and-control (C2) server. Flags are used to specify the page a victim is browsing and requests from unknown or "unwelcome" sources can be ignored, locking up data streams and barring researchers from properly analyzing communication flows.

Certificate errors are also blocked to stop victims from being aware of the C2 server link.

The third line of defense, however, is the most interesting update. An anti-debugging script has been added to code that can trigger a memory overload if a security researcher performs "code beautifying," a technique use to make large swathes of code more readable and easier to analyze.

If Trickbot detects this type of decoding, the malware will throw itself into a loop.

"TrickBot uses a RegEx to detect the beautified setup and throw itself into a loop that increases the dynamic array size on every iteration. After a few rounds, memory is eventually overloaded, and the browser crashes," the team says. "The goal is to anticipate the typical actions researchers will take and ensure their analysis fails."

IBM Trusteer says that Base64 obfuscation, redundant junk script and code, and native function patches are also used to sideline and confuse researchers.

In other security news this month, the FBI issued a warning related to the spread of Diavol ransomware, a strain of malware that uses similar machine fingerprint methods to Trickbot in identifying victim PCs.

Which brings us to the companys forthcoming Line module, which is set to add a stereo line input and an additional stereo line output to the OP-Z. Theres also MIDI, Trig and PO sync I/O.

The Line module is set to join the previously released Rumble haptic subwoofer and Oplab CV add-on in the OP-Z accessories range.

The OP-Z already has a built-in microphone, but the addition of a line-in means that you can add external audio signals to your mix and make more use of its sampling functionality.

A further benefit of the Line module is that Individual tracks can be routed to its output rather than the main mix output, enabling you to process them separately or create effect loops.

The extra output can also be used for headphone cueing, which could be useful if you want to perform a live set on your OP-Z.

The Line module will be available in the spring at a price that hasnt yet been confirmed. Further information will be released on the Teenage Engineering website in due course.

IT operations engineers are paid decently well but not as well, on average, as engineers in other fields, like development and security.

If you work in ITOps, that may come as a disappointment. The good news is that there are steps you can take to maximize your IT operations engineer salary.

IT operations engineers are responsible for deploying and managing applications and the infrastructure that hosts them.

They dont create the applications (thats a task for developers) or take the lead in security (which is a separate discipline). But IT operations plays the leading role in setting up IT environments and keeping them running.

As of 2022, IT operations engineers can expect to earn between $65,000 and $70,000 on average, according to sites like ZipRecruiter, Indeed and Glassdoor.

Average salaries for IT operations jobs in high cost of living areas, such as New York City and the San Francisco Bay region, skew a bit higher, into the mid-$80,000s. But even in those locales, few IT engineers earn six figures unless they are promoted to the IT management ranks.

Depending on your perspective, the salary ranges described above may or may not seem very impressive.

I imagine a fair number of folks early in their careers would be happy enough to make around $70,000. Its certainly higher than typical pay for recent college graduates, which is about $55,000.

On the other hand, if you compare IT operations engineer salary to those for other tech roles, working in IT operations seems less impressive. Software engineers earn nearly $110,000 on average, which is similar to salary estimates for security engineers. Site reliability engineers (SREs) do even better, with mean salaries of around $125,000 almost double those of IT engineers.

By the standards of the broader IT industry then, IT operations work doesnt pay especially well.

If youre an IT operations engineer (or aspiring to be one) who is unimpressed by typical earnings in the field, consider the following strategies for earning more.

In general, IT operations work requires only basic coding expertise. You usually need to know how to script and manage configuration files, but a lot of IT operations tasks can be performed without writing code (especially in Windows-based environments, where graphical administrative interfaces are widespread).

That said, more complex IT operations work often requires more advanced coding skills. For instance, if you want to take advantage of an everything-as-code approach to ITOps, which can help you work more efficiently in large-scale environments, youll need to know how to work with declarative programming languages such as Rego.

When you bring those types of skills to the table, you demonstrate more value to employers because you can do more for them in less time. In turn, you position yourself to earn more.

Along similar lines, Linux expertise is a type of skill that not all IT operations engineers possess. Its easier in general to learn how to point and click your way around Windows admin interfaces than it is to learn Linux CLI tools.

As a result, learning Linux is a great way to earn more in the IT operations field. Indeed, Linux engineers (who are arguably a type of IT engineer)earn around $110,000, quite a bit more than generic IT engineers.

Kubernetes is another in-demand technology that not all IT operations engineers know well. If you can help companies migrate their applications to containers and deploy them in Kubernetes, youre likely to command a much better salary than an IT engineer who only knows how to run monoliths and VMs.

Yet another example of an in-demand skill set is cloud computing. IT operations engineers who know how to deploy and manage applications in the cloud stand out from the crowd.

Learning the cloud means more than just understanding cloud computing architectures and concepts. If you really want to maximize your IT salary, gain hands-on experience using specific cloud tools and services like AWS EC2, S3, Lambda, EKS and CloudWatch (or their equivalents on whichever cloud platform your employer or prospective employer uses).

IT engineers and site reliability engineers do many of the same things (like deploying and managing applications), albeit in different ways.

What this means is that, if you already know IT operations, its not too hard to transform yourself into an SRE. In so doing, youll put yourself in a position to enjoy an SREs salary which, as noted above, is nearly twice that of an average IT operations engineer.

Consider doing IT operations work on a freelance basis to augment the salary from your main job. While the pay for freelance IT work can vary significantly, data shows that freelancers in general earn more per hour than they do in full-time jobs.

Plus, IT work tends to be easy to perform from anywhere with a flexible schedule. That makes it easy to land some side gigs doing work for companies that may not need a full-time IT operations engineer but do need help with their systems.

Of course, make sure your full-time employer is OK with moonlighting before you go down this route.

IT operations engineers dont earn as much on the whole as their counterparts in other technical roles. But by being strategic about which skills you choose to develop, you can make yourself an in-demand IT engineer and, in all likelihood, earn more in the process.
