Rowan University opens more paths to jobs in cybersecurity industry – Rowan Today

Studies in cybersecurity arent only for computer science experts. The launch of Rowan Universitys Master of Science in cybersecurity degree program comes at a critical time when cybersecurity professionals are in high demand.

More cybersecurity professionals from different backgrounds are exactly what we need in this country, said Dr. Vahid Heydari, director of the Center for Cybersecurity Education and Research, coordinator for the new degree program and associate professor in the Department of Computer Science in the College of Science and Mathematics. Cybersecurity needs to be a part of all jobs and industries, from law enforcement to business.

With the launch of its M.S. in cybersecurity program, which welcomed its first class in spring 2022, Rowan joins a small but growing number of universities offering graduate cybersecurity programs even for those who didnt major in computer science as undergrads.

In 2022, one in five cybersecurity jobs will go unfilled and the field of cybersecurity is expected to grow by 33 percent between 2020 and 2030, Heydari noted. Opening the field to students from a variety of backgrounds is a novel way to expand the cybersecurity workforce.

We want this degree to be grounded in real-world cybersecurity, with hands-on activities, said Dr. Vasil Hnatyshin, professor and department head of the Department of Computer Science. In our cyber lab, students use the exact tools used by hackers to learn how to attack and how to prevent attacks.

The new program reflects the interdisciplinary nature of the field of cybersecurity.

Cybersecurity is not just computer science, Hnatyshin said. Its mathematics, management, psychology, electrical engineering, business, economics, law and justice, and many other disciplines.

The program is designed to build a well-rounded cybersecurity individual, with business courses, writing, and other electives, added Jack Myers, a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science.

Student learning outcomes include technical skills, like building secure technical architecture, and non-technical skills in writing and management.

Rowan will apply for accreditation as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (NCAE-C) program by the Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Agency, once its first cohort graduates from the program as required. Five of the 10 courses that make up the new programs curriculum already cover the required content of the national cybersecurity curriculum.

Students will learn from Rowan faculty and adjuncts who are experts in the cybersecurity industry.

Leveraging cybersecurity professionals around the industry and government to teach electives prepares students for industry work in the legal aspects of cybersecurity, digital forensics and how to collect the evidence used to prosecute cybercriminals, Heydari said.

The M.S. in cybersecurity program at Rowan University provides students with an opportunity to develop their skills and expertise to enter a workforce which desperately needs motivated and skilled professionals, said John Kiger of East Greenwich, who transferred into the new program after graduating from Rowan with a computer science degree last fall.

The staffs dedication to supporting each student's professional development is second to none, Kiger added, noting that this support has been instrumental in the publication and presentation of his research at the 17th International Conference on Cyber Warfare and Security in March 2022.

The new program works with existing Rowan programs to give students more options to save tuition costs and earn a degree in less time. The 3+1 program allows students to attend community college for three years and complete their fourth year at Rowan.

The 4+1 combined advanced degree program allows students to earn both their bachelors and masters degrees in five years. For students who complete a combined 3+1+1 program, earning their masters degree while paying a community college tuition rate for three of their five total years of the program, this has to be one of the most affordable cyber masters degrees in the country, said Heydari.

Ultimately, we want to become a powerhouse in cybersecurity, said Hnatyshin, both in preparing professionals and conducting research.

The competition was created to inspire middle and high school students to learn to code and pursue professional opportunities in computer science, according to the companys website.

In their first year, co-founders Awofisayo and Ramirez joined heads to create Ask Sam. The application integrates a chatbot to address various perspectives in political topics including healthcare, taxes, the economy, and more. Ask Sam also provides resources to supplement or complement what users already know.

It was also a part of Awofisayos mission to address the food waste crisis. Hyper focused on amateur farmers, Plantry was created to help local crops grow. Planters can track their plants, watering times, harvest dates, and track the best locations to grow crops in various weather conditions. In addition, the application offers image detection models to help farmers recognize over 60 plants and the most common diseases.

Staying busy, Awofisayo also participated in Apples WWDC21 Swift Student Challenge. She created an interactive playground leading to a winning spot. Perks included a year membership in the Apple Developer program.

I believe that I am creating the next generation of computer scientists to be more diverse, not only in the users but also in the creations, Awofisayo said.

She continued: With my application that I did for the Apple Swift Challenge, there was a focus on bridging the gap between students with dyslexia and students who are member members of the hard of hearing and the deaf community, making sure they have the educational resources to succeed. Im trying to bridge the gap and make sure technology is accessible for everyone.

Provost Deek Reflects on his past and plans For the Future – The Vector: NJIT’s Student Newspaper

After 20 years of serving as NJIT Provost & Senior Executive Vice President, Dr. Fadi Deek will return to NJIT faculty on July 1 as a Distinguished Professor of Informatics & Mathematical Sciences. Besides earning all three of his degrees here (B.S. Computer Science 85, M.S. Computer Science 86, and Ph.D. Computer and Information Science 97), over the past four decades, Deek has served in various capacities at the university, earning his tenure and rising through the administrative ranks.

Two years ago, I informed the President and the Chair of the Board of Trustees that on June 30 2022, I would like to conclude my role as Provost and Senior Executive Vice President. The primary reason is because I believe that over a decade in this role I have delivered on what I promised to do and on what I was asked to do and perhaps even more. Also, because I had served in administration prior to this, as Dean for another decade, said Deek. So I will be back on the faculty as a Distinguished Professor of Informatics I look forward to returning not only to the classroom as a teacher, which I cherish, but also as a researcher.As a faculty member, Deek had earned numerous accolades for his research, publishing over 150 articles in journals and co-authoring three books with colleagues from the Ying Wu College of Computing. He is excited to return to research and foresees writing another book in the near future.

It was not Deeks original plan to stay in academia when he immigrated to the United States from Lebanon in the 1980s, entering to study computer science at NJIT. Like many other immigrants, his initial goal was to earn his degrees and then return to his home country to work.

However, partially due to the Lebanese Civil War ongoing at the time, Deek decided to prolong his stay and pursue higher education. By this time, he had met and fallen in love with one of his classmates, fellow Class of 1985 alumna Maura Deek. She is also actively involved with academia at NJIT, currently serving as a Senior University Lecturer of Informatics.

I came to NJIT as an international student from Lebanon. One reason I stayed in the US was a classmate, Maura McShane, who became a soulmate, now my wife and the mother of our three children. Also, an ongoing war in Lebanon made it more logical for me to stay here and earn additional advanced degrees. Thats why I joined the Ph.D. program, said Deek. As a masters student, I was a Teaching Assistant. Subsequently, I became a Lecturer and my professional career started to take off. I held that job and other similar jobs while I was doing my Ph.D., and when I finished my Ph.D., I was appointed to the faculty. Soon after, I was also given additional administrative responsibilities. The last two are, of course, the Provost and Senior Executive Vice President, and the one before, Dean of the College of Science and Liberal Arts, and earlier roles included Associate Dean, Vice Chair, Director of the Information Technology Program.

As Provost and Senior Executive Vice President, one of Deeks first significant assignments was to produce a strategic plan for the university with the help of more than 200 other community members. Under this multi-year strategic plan, titled 2020 Vision: A Plan for Success, NJITs student success rate improved, a faculty renewal initiative was created and there was increased growth in doctoral students and research expenditures.Not everything can be planned for, however, and one of Deeks recent important contributions to NJIT was helping guide the community through the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the initial transition to virtual learning due to COVID-19 two years ago, Deek sent out the initial emails announcing the temporary cancellation of classes and the special grading provisions, and he served as part of the Pandemic Recovery Committee and helped develop the converged learning model. He wrote in an update on March 31, 2020, that in this challenging time, it is gratifying to see our NJIT community support each other as we adjust to the new normal There inevitably will be times when things do not go exactly as they should, but know that you are not alone. The NJIT community is your second family and together we will persevere and prevail.

Of all of his contributions, Deek hopes that he is remembered as a mentor. He proudly recalls the 14 Ph.D. students whom he mentored into careers and is looking forward to returning to the roots of his career as a faculty member.

Im very proud that my students recognized my desire to be there for them, to guide them toward successful careers. Thats why Im excited about going back to the classroom, said Deek. If you asked me what I derived the most satisfaction from [throughout my career], I would say the first 17 years, when I was primarily a teacher and a mentor. I love what I did in the last 20 years, but I was primarily an administrator.

As I embark on the next phase of my professional career, returning to the NJIT faculty on July 1, 2022, I would like to thank the entire NJIT community for everything we have accomplished together during my time as Provost and Senior Executive Vice President, wrote Deek in a memorandum to NJIT faculty and staff members on Jan. 20. I am excited by the prospect of once again dedicating myself to teaching and mentoring students toward successful careers and advancing knowledge through research, a passion that I put on hold to focus on my administrative roles.

The search for an Interim Provost, generally selected by the President, is currently ongoing internally. After this, a nationwide search will be conducted to select the next permanent Provost.

The pope and students dialogued on issues of the day times, highlighting migrants and children of migrants who are committed to transforming environmental and economic realities related to human migration and displacement.

Leading up to the Feb. 24 gathering titled "Building Bridges North-South," seven regional working groupseach including about 20 studentsmet to prepare.

Sahra (right) was selected because of his leadership roles at SU.Hes anAlfie Scholarand Ignatian Leader, serves as the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Dean's Student Advisory Council and works with RAMP.up with the Center for Community Engagement and Albers. He took some time to reflect on the dialogue with the Pope.

Q: What did you take away from the overall experience?

Afrikaan: For me, the event was life-changing.I got to hear from more than 50 students from 21 nations.Most of them were immigrants and/or children of migrants. They all shared their stories and how they show leadership and innovation/creativity to solve their local challenges.

It has been a blessing to be a part of "Building-Bridges"a program to uplift the voices of students who are migrants and/or the children of migrants and connect, collaborate and create solutions for our people with our respective universities and communities. Ive linked with so many incredible young leaders advocating and creating solutions for their communities. They've inspired me with their resilience, creativity and genuine human stories.

Q: What stood out specifically from the conversation with the Pope?

Afrikaan: The Pope was tender-hearted and very progressive. I love when he said,Weve to give young people concrete answers, no maybes. He also mentioned the need to listen and uplift the voices of immigrants/refugees. We need to sympathize with refugees/migrants from all over the world and share a positive narrative that shows the diversity of skills, talents, jobs, identity and experiences we bring to host nations.

I myself immigrated to the US five years ago and I'm hopeful because I'm learning to change my life, my family and the community that I live among here in South Seattle. Im working on creating Digital Equity for our communities here. l have founded tech4REFUGEES, an organization that aims to bridge the gap of digital literacy and hopes to reduce digital gap for minority communities in WA state. Thats what I hope to do upon graduation.

New CS master’s program to focus on information systems | Binghamton News – Binghamton

Starting in fall 2022, Binghamton University will offer a Master of Science in Information Systems that is intended for those whose career paths are focused on computer hardware and software systems operations and maintenance.

The program, offered through the Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Sciences Department of Computer Science, will focus on computer systems from a user/application perspective. It will differ from other computer science options that emphasize software and hardware theoretical foundations, design, and assessment of performance, cost and functional tradeoffs.

Every year, the Computer Science Department turns away many applicants for our MS in Computer Science program due to their lack of adequate computer science background but otherwise excellent students, said CS Chair and Distinguished Service Professor Weiyi Meng. The MS in Information Systems program will provide a great opportunity for these applicants as well as many others to have a rewarding career in the information technologies industry.

The program will focus on configuring and integrating various information systems components such as networking and software systems, databases, data analytics and web-based systems and software packages, as well as developing programming and scripting skills

The MSIS program has an applied data science track, which provides an option to students who are interested in a data science/analytics career.

Associate Professor Patrick Madden, director of the new MSIS program, said it was developed in response to industry inquiries as well as feedback from students applying to Watsons CS program.

There has been an explosion of data processing in the cloud, with data mining and machine learning everywhere, he said. It has opened up tons of jobs for people with a very particular skill set, and its not the same as a conventional computer scientist. Theres less of a focus on writing code and a lot more on configuring and connecting systems together. The hiring managers we talk to have always been happy with our graduates in CS, but theyve also been asking for people with this new focus.

Applicants who do not have adequate prerequisites in programming may be admitted as long as they complete required preparatory courses before they start the program.

We turn away many students from the CS program because they dont have a bachelors degree in CS, Madden said. Theyre great engineers and mathematicians really bright students but they lack the preparation for an intense graduate CS program. By adding the MSIS program, we can create courses that leverage the skills these new students have coming in and then prepare them for the new jobs that are opening up in industry.

For students to graduate from this program, they must complete 31 credits (nine credits from three required courses, 21 credits from seven elective courses and a one-credit project), and they need to maintain a B average throughout their academic work.

The world is always changing, with new technologies and shifting demands, Madden said. The CS Department is changing to meet the times.

Filings buzz in the mining industry: 48% increase in artificial intelligence mentions in Q3 of 2021 – Mining Technology

Mentions of artificial intelligence within the filings of companies in the mining industry rose 48% between the second and third quarters of 2021.In total, the frequency of sentences related to artificial intelligence between October 2020 and September 2021 was 188% higher than in 2016 when GlobalData, from which our data for this article is taken, first began to track the key issues referred to in company filings.

When companies in the mining industry publish annual and quarterly reports, ESG reports, and other filings, GlobalData analyses the text and identifies individual sentences that relate to disruptive forces facing companies in the coming years. Artificial intelligence is one of these topics companies that excel and invest in these areas are thought to be better prepared for the future business landscape and better equipped to survive unforeseen challenges.

To assess whether artificial intelligence is featuring more in the summaries and strategies of companies in the mining industry, two measures were calculated. Firstly, we looked at the percentage of companies that have mentioned artificial intelligence at least once in filings during the past 12 months this was 43%, compared to 22% in 2016. Secondly, we calculated the percentage of total analysed sentences that referred to artificial intelligence.

Of the 10 biggest employers in the mining industry, Nippon Steel was the company that referred to artificial intelligence the most between October 2020 and September 2021. GlobalData identified 23 artificial intelligence-related sentences in the Japan-based company's filings 0.3% of all sentences. Mitsubishi mentioned artificial intelligence the second most the issue was referred to in 0.16% of sentences in the company's filings.

Conservative pundit Ann Coulter says the time to move on from former President Donald Trump is now.

She was quoted in a report Sunday evening about growing tensions between Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis ahead of a potential 2024 election showdown.

"Trump is done," Coulter told the New York Times in an email. "You guys should stop obsessing over him."

An early supporter of Trump's 2016 campaign, Coulter became increasingly critical of the 45th president during his administration, pushing for him to be harder on immigration policy and border security. In March 2019, Trump branded Coulter a "wacky nut job" after she questioned his success on building a U.S.-Mexico border wall. The public sparring didn't stop there. Coulter delivered a speech soon after the 2020 election in which she said Trump having a second term "would have killed us" and advocated for "Trumpism after Trump."

Coulter took a shot at Trump last week after he chastised politicians for not announcing whether they have received a COVID-19 booster shot, which many political observers took to be a swipe at DeSantis.

"Trump is demanding to know Ron DeSantiss booster status, and I can now reveal it," Coulter said in a tweet. "He was a loyal booster when Trump ran in 2016, but then he learned our president was a liar and con man whose grift was permanent."

Great news for Joe Biden. After months of abysmal public approval numbers, President Bidens favorability among registered voters has soared by 2 points to 45%! And all he had to do was bring us to the brink of World War III.

The media are thrilled with the possibility of nuclear war with Russia. Catastrophes are terrific for ratings, and flood-the-zone coverage of a war between two faraway countries that has almost zero effect on the lives of most Americans allows journalists to act like deep-think, geopolitical strategists (after having quickly looked up Ukraine on Wikipedia).

They dragged out the COVID panic porn for two straight years. By now, the only people still interested in pandemic updates are hysterical liberal women in Manhattan claiming to have long-haul COVID.

The national pastime has segued seamlessly from watching TV anchors cry on TV about the coronavirus to watching TV anchors cry on TV about the fate of Ukrainian children.

Of course, when American kids are murdered expressly as a result of our own governments policies, the journalism protocol is: No crying, no coverage.

There will be no tears for the 5-year-old Florida girl killed in October when an illegal alien from Guatemala, Ernesto Lopez Morales, tanked up on six 32-ounce beers, then plowed into the little girl and her mother as he was driving to get more beer.

Nor for Texas teenager Adrienne Sophia Exum, killed instantly one Sunday afternoon in 2020 when Heriberto Fuerte-Padilla, an illegal alien from Mexico, smashed into the car she was driving, then fled the scene. Im sure its just a coincidence, but the medias obsessive focus on Ukraine is terrific for the interests of the Democratic Party. Recall that, in his 2012 book, Left Turn: How Liberal Media Bias Distorts the American Mind, then-UCLA professor Tim Groseclose demonstrated that media bias alone costs Republicans about 8 to 10 percentage points in elections.

And that was 2012. One can only imagine what it is in post-Trump 2022. If only we could return to the junior varsity media bias of 2012!

Until the war in Ukraine, the Democrats were facing midterms after having spent the previous two years mandating masks and an endless series of vaccinations even for the vaccinated or previously infected.

Democrats flung open the border to illegal alien murderers, drug dealers, gang members and welfare recipients.

Democratic district attorneys have turned city after city into feces-smeared murdertopias that make Charles Bronsons Death Wish look like The Sound of Music.

These days, the lefts main casus belli is teaching little kids about anal sex, transgenders and the inherent evil of white people.

What could even Stalins media do with that record?

Option 1) Implement a collective mind wipe, perhaps through an electromagnetic pulse, to erase voters memory of everything thats happened since Joe Biden was sworn in.

Option 2) WAR! (Someplace in the world thats not here.)

What crisis at our border? Were reporting on a WAR.

How can you talk about murder rates when CHILDREN ARE DYING IN UKRAINE?

What vaccine mandates? COVID is over. Now were talking about war!

Everything bad thats happening is Putins fault! Hes like Hitler!

Talk about Russian collusion! Putin gave Trump Facebook ads; hes giving Biden a military invasion.

By now, the media have whipped the public into such a frenzy over Ukraine that a majority of Americans want the U.S. to start shooting down Russian planes, starting World War III with nuclear armed power.

A small price to pay for Democratic dominance.

But much like American military interventions around the globe, things dont always go as planned.

The Democrats media helpers might want to recall President George H.W. Bushs 89% favorable rating in 1991 the highest presidential job approval rating then on record, according to Gallup.

Those astronomical numbers came as a result of the conclusion of the Persian Gulf War, when we went to war with Saddam Hussein because he had invaded neighboring Kuwait violating that nations sacred sovereignty! and proceeded to commit unspeakable war crimes, including using poison gas. The first week of that war, Bushs poll numbers shot from 64% to 82%.

Republicans had a lock on the next years presidential contest. No serious Democrats were willing to challenge him, and the party ended up with a horny hick from Arkansas as their nominee.

And then it all collapsed. By Election Day 1992, Bushs public approval rating was down to a pathetic 34%. The horny hick won the election, and Bush became an embarrassing one-term president.

On the military side, at least the Middle East was finally at peace. We never heard a peep out of Hussein again. Wait what happened?
