Robert G. Roeder serves as Arnold and Mabel Beckman Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at The Rockefeller University. Over more than 50 years of pioneering research, Professor Roeder has revealed the principle of the regulatory mechanism of gene transcription in eukaryotes. In addition to discovering the three main RNA polymerases, he is credited with identifying basic transcription factors, including one of the first gene-specific factors, and regulators in transcription from chromatin, making profound contributions to the life sciences.

Bruno Latour, Professor Emeritus at the Paris Institute of Political Studies, revolutionized the conventional view of science by treating nature, humans, laboratory equipment, and other entities as equal actors, and describing technoscience as the hybrid network of these actors. Microsoft adopts RISE with SAP for internal migration to S/4HANA – CIO

Microsoft has begun migrating its internal SAP systems to S/4HANA under the RISE with SAP umbrella.

In choosing RISE, Microsoft is making SAP responsible for the licensing, technical management, hosting and support of its SAP applications under a single SLA although ultimately Microsoft will host its S/4HANA instances in its own Azure cloud, and some of the migration work will be performed by third parties.

The migration to S/4HANA will serve a dual purpose for Microsoft: modernizing its legacy SAP systems before the end of mainstream support in 2027 and demonstrating to customers that it is capable of hosting and running one of the largest and most complex SAP installations in the world within the RISE framework.

All three major cloud providers host SAP applications for their customers, and all three run at least some of their internal financial systems on SAP. Microsoft has run SAP internally since at least 1995; Amazon.com is reported to have turned to SAP for its finances in 2008, while Google parent Alphabet replaced some of its Oracle financial systems with SAP in April 2021. Microsoft, though, is the first to adopt the RISE with SAP offering.

Microsofts engineering team is no stranger to complex SAP projects: In February 2018, it completed the migration of internal legacy SAP systems from dedicated servers to its Azure cloud, a stepwise process that now provides it with a model for managing the S/4HANA migration.

It helped us to tune our Microsoft cloud to run SAP environments, highly complex, large-scale environments, the largest in the world, said JooCouto, vice-president of the SAP business unit at Microsoft.

Couto is more used to helping joint customers of SAP and Microsoft move their applications into the Azure cloud but has been heavily involved in discussions with his colleagues at Microsoft Digital, the companys internal IT services organization, about the S/4HANA migration.

Although the companies are only now announcing the deal, work on the migration has already begun.

We started a few months ago, said Couto. We are in the planning and assessment phase. In some elements we are already going into a deep dive and understanding how we can adjust our own internal operations and how the services will be provisioned, how the SLA will be delivered.

Among the questions to be answered, he said, are who will deliver which services, and how will integrations be made to surrounding Microsoft systems that are not part of the RISE offering.

Understanding the lie of the land before moving anything is important, as Microsoft has one of the largest and most complex SAP installations in the world, serving multiple business units and also managing its core finances. The systems must cope with sales of products, services, and subscriptions to businesses and to consumers.

We have a full portfolio of core finance and operations systems of record anchored on SAP systems, but we also have many other applications from SAP running at Microsoft, from SuccessFactors to Integrated Business Planning, said Couto.

Its not just the scale of Microsofts SAP environment that makes migration a challenge, but also the degree of customization.

Like the vast majority of large SAP customers, our system has been very highly customized. We have invested heavily in high degrees of automation and high degrees of integration with multiple other systems in-house, said Couto. That makes it even more exciting, lets put it this way, to go through this journey.

To ensure that things dont become too exciting, Microsoft is focusing on migrating just three areas of its business for the first phase of the project, working directly with SAP and without the support of a systems integrator.

Couto said he expects to be able to announce the results of this first phase later in the year, and that other partners will become involved after that, as the migration process scales up.

Its definitely going to be a multi-year project for us taking into consideration that we also want to leverage the opportunity to build new levels of services, new integrations, new innovations that we can make available for customers, he said.

SAPs head of strategic engineering partnerships, Stefan Goebel, said that unravelling decades of customizations will be a challenge for Microsoft, but not the biggest.

Change management is definitely going to be the largest challenge to begin with, regardless of whether its SAP or anything else. If you have software that was initially installed 20 years ago, thats just going to be a big piece of work.

A secretive US security program has its sights on DiDi – Protocol

For the most part, especially if its a newer application or a modernized or restructured application, its going to be running inside containers orchestrated by [Amazon] ECS and EKS or running on Lambda, Singh said in an interview with Protocol. Running it directly on a [virtual machine], without container orchestration on top, is getting less and less common.

Containers speed up application development by isolating everything needed to build and deploy applications code and other operating dependencies including configuration files and system libraries and tools without the overhead of an operating system. The technology has been around for a long time, but Docker popularized a developer-friendly format for using containers around 2013, and it has become a big part of the cloud-native world ever since.

With two major managed services for containers, AWS dominates container orchestration among cloud providers, according to market share data. But the company has also heavily promoted Lambda, a very different serverless functions computing service, as the future of cloud computing.

AWS remains reluctant to acknowledge one of the major benefits of containers they make it easier to run applications on multiple clouds despite the growth and influence of containers as a product strategy both inside AWS and outside. And key features announced in 2020 to support customers who want to manage applications on any infrastructure appear to have fallen short of the multicloud capabilities offered by similar products from Microsoft and Google

One of the unique things about AWS is that we have two container offerings at the high level via ECS and EKS; most other people just have the one, Singh said. And they appeal to a different type of customer in many cases, sometimes different people in the same company, different departments in the same organization. But what it means is that customers have choices. They don't have to try and fit into one model. Its also allowed us to think and identify opportunities where we want to go higher up the stack and ship things for them.

Amazon Elastic Container Service (ECS) its homegrown and first managed container service launched in 2015 was pegged as the most widely adopted cloud-managed orchestration system among cloud-native developers using such services in a December report from SlashData, an analyst firm focused on developers. But it maintains a tenuous lead. Thirty-three percent of developers are using Amazon ECS, according to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation-commissioned report, followed by Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) at 32%.

[Amazon ECS] lead has arguably been crumbling with no gain to bring home, while Google Kubernetes Engine has been closing in with a substantial growth of 4 percentage points in the last 12 months, the report stated.

Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS), launched almost three years after GKE, is used by 30% of developers surveyed and had the largest year-over-year gain at eight percentage points. A quarter of developers, meanwhile, said they used Microsoft Azure Kubernetes Service, and 17% used Red Hat OpenShift Online or hosted OpenShift on a third-party cloud provider.

AWS would not provide up-to-date usage and growth statistics for Amazon ECS and Amazon EKS beyond 2019 figures posted to its website.

Container orchestration system preferences shifted among edge developers, who lean towards using the open-source Kubernetes for containerized applications, according to the SlashData report. Sixty-seven percent of developers said they used GKE, while 57% used Amazon EKS and half turned to Amazon ECS.

The majority of Amazon ECS customers investment advisory firm The Vanguard Group and Canadian financial services startup Neo Financial among them are running on the serverless AWS Fargate compute engine instead of AWS flagship Amazon EC2 compute service, according to Singh.

Almost every new ECS customer is running on Fargate, he said. They like the fact that they dont have to think about servers, they dont think about clusters theyre just paying for the services that theyre running.

AWS is focused on making applications easier to use on Fargate and making it more powerful by adding capabilities such as support for GPUs and larger task sizes.

Capabilities like that the ability to run even larger applications are a big part of where our Fargate roadmap is focused in addition to providing people more visibility into what theyre running, because Fargate hides a lot from you, Singh said. We released a bunch of features last year to make that easier for them, like ECS Exec.

AWS also is moving from Docker to containerd an industry-standard container runtime for ECS/Fargate and, potentially over time, for EKS, according to Singh.

[Its] one of the underlying components of Docker, but takes out some of the higher-level stuff, because you dont need that in those contexts, he said.

Amazon ECS is falling out of favor to a degree because of its proprietary AWS technology, according to Eric Drobisewski, senior enterprise architect at insurance provider Liberty Mutual, which is trying to minimize its use of Amazon ECS over time.

The code for that is kind of closed off to Amazon in terms of how its implemented, how its developed, Drobisewski said. Its got its own orchestration model that they built it is not Kubernetes-based. It does support open standards in terms of the artifacts you can push in but the operations model around it is really unique to it. Things that you might want to plug in service mesh gets a lot of attention and things nowadays with Istio and Linkerd a lot of those werent necessarily built as well to work in an ECS model. Amazon has definitely recognized that. Thats part of the reason they built EKS.

Liberty Mutual has put a big focus on shifting everything into Kubernetes over the last four years and has some 20,000 containers actively running as it continues to onboard new workloads and modernize existing ones.

The open-source community spoke, and Kubernetes is fully mainstream, Drobisewski said. The adoption is pretty evident across all different lines of industry in enterprise, which is powerful.

Almost 90% of Kubernetes users leverage cloud-managed services instead of running self-managed clusters a 19-point increase from 2020, according to an October report from DataDog, which provides a monitoring and security platform for cloud applications.

Liberty Mutual is integrating more with Amazon EKS to shed aspects of cluster maintenance. Snapchat owner Snap, Babylon Health and banking and financial services institution HSBC also are among customers of Amazon EKS, which launched in 2018.

My opinion with EKS is that theres this false kind of belief that theres no operations involved with it, which is absolutely not true, Drobisewski said. Amazon absorbs a decent amount of operations; were aware of pieces they dont. But its a good mechanism for us to shed some of that and shift to a provider where possible.

AWS roadmaps for both ECS and EKS are public on GitHub. In addition to making its container orchestration services simpler to use and more powerful, AWS is focused on improving the developer and operator experience around software deployment, delivery and automation, and adding features for scaling, IP address management and security, according to Singh.

At re:Invent, a lot of announcements were related to container security because our customer base is getting to the point where they really, really care about having that level of capability, Singh said, referring to AWS annual conference late last year. We released an open-source project for Kubernetes called Karpenter, which is all around how you provision and scale Kubernetes clusters on AWS. Weve also started doing more around GitOps as a methodology.

The big problem to solve is the complexity of moving in the cloud while using a reasonable amount of money and resources, and containers and container orchestration particularly containers as a service are the primary way to work around very complicated deployments, said David Linthicum, chief cloud strategy officer for Deloitte Consulting.

Containers are pretty much the only way we have a possible way of abstracting ourselves away from the complexities with the federated [containers issue] and then lowering the operational costs of building these things and building these applications, he said. Its going to be a continued focus moving forward, because it has to be. Its one of the few solutions out there that doesnt make things worse. We can use it to make things better.

AWS last year launched semi-answers to hybrid and multicloud offerings from its rivals Google Clouds Anthos platform and Microsofts Azure Arc with Amazon EKS Anywhere and ECS Anywhere, after announcing the products at re:Invent 2020.

The current Amazon EKS Anywhere deployment option, which arrived last September, allows customers to create and operate Kubernetes clusters in their own data centers using VMware vSphere, with optional support from AWS. Bare metal support is expected this year.

What weve done is basically take the Kubernetes distribution that underlies EKS, packaged it up, open-sourced it with all the operational tooling which is identical to how we operate underneath the hood for EKS, so they get the same behavior and we will support it, Singh said.

ECS Anywhere is a similar feature for Amazon ECS that launched last May to allow customers to run and manage container workloads on their on-premises infrastructure. It can be used with any virtual machine VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V or OpenStack or bare metal server running a supported operating system.

You can point ECS to running on EC2, to running on Fargate, to running on a Raspberry Pi in your living room it doesnt care to some degree, Singh said. As long as you point it to compute capacity, you can then use ECS to run them. The difference is you can run EKS Anywhere without actually even connecting to AWS, if you wanted to. With ECS Anywhere, you do need to maintain that connection.

AWS previewed EKS Anywhere and ECS Anywhere in 2020 as working on any infrastructure without any reference to multicloud, which, as noted, isnt its favorite word. That means you can use those tools to manage applications running on Microsoft or Google Cloud, but you wont hear a lot of AWS executives talking about this feature.

You can run EKS Anywhere or ECS Anywhere on any infrastructure as long as its running the supported platforms or operating systems," a spokesperson told Protocol this week.

But the tools dont allow for real cloud-neutral functionality, said Jason Gregson, global head of AWS Operations and Programs at DoiT International, a multicloud software and managed service provider.

It's more of an enabler than it is really a set of tooling to actually allow you to do vendor-agnostic cloud computing around containers, Gregson said. The compute element that's running the software yeah, absolutely that's agnostic. The part that actually allows customers to use it no. Fundamentally, the architecture around it changes. It will run the application, but you've still got to do the embedding, and you've still got to do the integration. [You] still need to be able to allow customers to come in, talk to that web service and get the data they need to come out. That part changes everywhere.

Both Amazon EKS Anywhere and ECS Anywhere are off to a good start, according to Singh.

Theres already been customers who have adopted them at scale for a variety of workloads, ranging from gaming, machine learning, data prep to just running enterprise IT, he said. By next year, we should know whether the Anywhere versions of AWS container services helped it maintain its lead over the competition.

Life as we know it would not exist without this highly unusual number – Space.com

Paul M. Sutteris an astrophysicist at SUNY Stony Brook and the Flatiron Institute, host of "Ask a Spaceman" and "Space Radio," and author of "How to Die in Space."

A seemingly harmless, random number with no units or dimensions has cropped up in so many places in physics and seems to control one of the most fundamental interactions in the universe.

Its name is the fine-structure constant, and it's a measure of the strength of the interaction between charged particles and the electromagnetic force. The current estimate of the fine-structure constant is 0.007 297 352 5693, with an uncertainty of 11 on the last two digits. The number is easier to remember by its inverse, approximately 1/137.

If it had any other value, life as we know it would be impossible. And yet we have no idea where it comes from.

Atoms have a curious property: They can emit or absorb radiation of very specific wavelengths, called spectral lines. Those wavelengths are so specific because of quantum mechanics. An electron orbiting around a nucleus in an atom can't have just any energy; it's restricted to specific energy levels.

When electrons change levels, they can emit or absorb radiation, but that radiation will have exactly the energy difference between those two levels, and nothing else hence the specific wavelengths and the spectral lines.

But in the early 20th century, physicists began to notice that some spectral lines were split, or had a "fine structure" (and now you can see where I'm going with this). Instead of just a single line, there were sometimes two very narrowly separated lines.

The full explanation for the "fine structure" of the spectral line rests in quantum field theory, a marriage of quantum mechanics and special relativity. And one of the first people to take a crack at understanding this was physicist Arnold Sommerfeld. He found that to develop the physics to explain the splitting of spectral lines, he had to introduce a new constant into his equations a fine-structure constant.

The introduction of a constant wasn't all that new or exciting at the time. After all, physics equations throughout history have involved random constants that express the strengths of various relationships. Isaac Newton's formula for universal gravitation had a constant, called G, that represents the fundamental strength of the gravitational interaction. The speed of light, c, tells us about the relationship between electric and magnetic fields. The spring constant, k, tells us how stiff a particular spring is. And so on.

But there was something different in Sommerfeld's little constant: It didn't have units. There are no dimensions or unit system that the value of the number depends on. The other constants in physics aren't like this. The actual value of the speed of light, for example, doesn't really matter, because that number depends on other numbers. Your choice of units (meters per second, miles per hour or leagues per fortnight?) and the definitions of those units (exactly how long is a "meter" going to be?) matter; if you change any of those, the value of the constant changes along with it.

But that's not true for the fine-structure constant. You can have whatever unit system you want and whatever method of organizing the universe as you wish, and that number will be precisely the same.

If you were to meet an alien from a distant star system, you'd have a pretty hard time communicating the value of the speed of light. Once you nailed down how we express our numbers, you would then have to define things like meters and seconds.

But the fine structure constant? You could just spit it out, and they would understand it (as long as they count numbers the same way as we do).

Sommerfeld originally didn't put much thought into the constant, but as our understanding of the quantum world grew, the fine-structure constant started appearing in more and more places. It seemed to crop up anytime charged particles interacted with light. In time, we came to recognize it as the fundamental measure for the strength of how charged particles interact with electromagnetic radiation.

Change that number, change the universe. If the fine-structure constant had a different value, then atoms would have different sizes, chemistry would completely change and nuclear reactions would be altered. Life as we know it would be outright impossible if the fine-structure constant had even a slightly different value.

So why does it have the value it does? Remember, that value itself is important and might even have meaning, because it exists outside any unit system we have. It simply is.

In the early 20th century, it was thought that the constant had a value of precisely 1/137. What was so important about 137? Why that number? Why not literally any other number? Some physicists even went so far as to attempt numerology to explain the constant's origins; for example, famed astronomer Sir Arthur Eddington "calculated" that the universe had 137 * 2^256 protons in it, so "of course" 1/137 was also special.

Today, we have no explanation for the origins of this constant. Indeed, we have no theoretical explanation for its existence at all. We simply measure it in experiments and then plug the measured value into our equations to make other predictions.

Someday, a theory of everything a complete and unified theory of physics might explain the existence of the fine-structure constant and other constants like it. Unfortunately, we don't have a theory of everything, so we're stuck shrugging our shoulders.

But at least we know what to write on our greeting cards to the aliens.

The Bohr model: The famous but flawed depiction of an atom – Space.com

The Bohr model, introduced by Danish physicist Niels Bohr in 1913, was a key step on the journey to understand atoms.

Ancient Greek thinkers already believed that matter was composed of tiny basic particles that couldn't be divided further. It took more than 2,000 years for science to advance enough to prove this theory right. The journey to understanding atoms and their inner workings was long and complicated.

It was British chemist John Dalton who in the early 19th century revived the ideas of ancient Greeks that matter was composed of tiny indivisible particles called atoms. Dalton believed that every chemical element consisted of atoms of distinct properties that could be combined into various compounds, according to Britannica.

Dalton's theories were correct in many aspects, apart from that basic premise that atoms were the smallest component of matter that couldn't be broken down into anything smaller. About a hundred years after Dalton, physicists started discovering that the atom was, in fact, really quite complex inside.

British physicist Joseph John Thomson made the first major breakthrough in the understanding of atoms in 1897 when he discovered that atoms contained tiny negatively charged particles that he called electrons. Thomson thought that electrons floated in a positively charged "soup" inside the atomic sphere, according to Khan Academy.

14 years later, New Zealand-born Ernest Rutherford, Thomson's former student, challenged this depiction of the atom when he found in experiments that the atom must have a small positively charged nucleus sitting at its center.

Based on this finding, Rutherford then developed a new atom model, the Rutherford model. According to this model, the atom no longer consisted of just electrons floating in a soup but had a tiny central nucleus, which contained most of the atom's mass. Around this nucleus, the electrons revolved similarly to planets orbiting the sun in our solar system, according to Britannica.

Some questions, however, remained unanswered. For example, how was it possible that the electrons didn't collapse onto the nucleus, since their opposite charge would mean they should be attracted to it? Several physicists tried to answer this question including Rutherford's student Niels Bohr.

Bohr was the first physicist to look to the then-emerging quantum theory to try to explain the behavior of the particles inside the simplest of all atoms; the atom of hydrogen. Hydrogen atoms consist of a heavy nucleus with one positively-charged proton around which a single, much smaller and lighter, negatively charged electron orbits. The whole system looks a little bit like the sun with only one planet orbiting it.

Bohr tried to explain the connection between the distance of the electron from the nucleus, the electron's energy and the light absorbed by the hydrogen atom, using one great novelty of physics of that era: the Planck constant.

The Planck constant was a result of the investigation of German physicist Max Planck into the properties of electromagnetic radiation of a hypothetical perfect object called the black body.

Strangely, Planck discovered that this radiation, including light, is emitted not in a continuum but rather in discrete packets of energy that can only be multiples of a certain fixed value, according to Physics World.That fixed value became the Planck constant. Max Planck called these packets of energy quanta, providing a name to the completely new type of physics that was set to turn the scientists' understanding of our world upside down.

What role does the Planck constant play in the hydrogen atom? Despite the nice comparison, the hydrogen atom is not exactly like the solar system. The electron doesn't orbit its sun the nucleus at a fixed distance, but can skip between different orbits based on how much energy it carries, Bohr postulated. It may orbit at the distance of Mercury, then jump to Earth, then to Mars.

The electron doesn't slide between the orbits gradually, but makes discrete jumps when it reaches the correct energy level, quite in line with Planck's theory, physicist Ali Hayek explains on his YouTube channel.

Bohr believed that there was a fixed number of orbits that the electron could travel in. When the electron absorbs energy, it jumps to a higher orbital shell. When it loses energy by radiating it out, it drops to a lower orbit. If the electron reaches the highest orbital shell and continues absorbing energy, it will fly out of the atom altogether.

The ratio between the energy of the electron and the frequency of the radiation it emits is equal to the Planck constant. The energy of the light emitted or absorbed is exactly equal to the difference between the energies of the orbits and is inversely proportional to the wavelength of the light absorbed by the electron, according to Ali Hayek.

Using his model, Bohr was able to calculate the spectral lines the lines in the continuous spectrum of light that the hydrogen atoms would absorb.

The Bohr model seemed to work pretty well for atoms with only one electron. But apart from hydrogen, all other atoms in the periodic table have more, some many more, electrons orbiting their nuclei. For example, the oxygen atom has eight electrons, the atom of iron has 26 electrons.

Once Bohr tried to use his model to predict the spectral lines of more complex atoms, the results became progressively skewed.

There are two reasons why Bohr's model doesn't work for atoms with more than one electron, according to the Chemistry Channel. First, the interaction of multiple atoms makes their energy structure more difficult to predict.

Bohr's model also didn't take into account some of the key quantum physics principles, most importantly the odd and mind-boggling fact that particles are also waves, according to the educational website Khan Academy.

As a result of quantum mechanics, the motion of the electrons around the nucleus cannot be exactly predicted. It is impossible to pinpoint the velocity and position of an electron at any point in time. The shells in which these electrons orbit are therefore not simple lines but rather diffuse, less defined clouds.

Only a few years after the model's publication, physicists started improving Bohr's work based on the newly discovered principles of particle behavior. Eventually, the much more complicated quantum mechanical model emerged, superseding the Bohr model. But because things get far less neat when all the quantum principles are in place, the Bohr model is probably still the first thing most physics students discover in their quest to understand what governs matter in the microworld.
