Harnessing and actioning data to drive business growth – Tech Wire Asia

In partnership witheTail Asia 2022,Tech Wire Asiahad the pleasure to interview Dr Angshuman Ghosh, Head of Data Science for Sony Research India. Together we discussed how new sources of data, fed into systems powered by machine learning and AI, are at the heart of the digital transformation for many businesses across most industries.

Around the world, Covid-19 has accelerated retails transition to a digital future that we are living through today. It is also clear that the Asian region will get there first simply because of its advanced digital maturity. At this point, the region is generating about three-quarters of global retail growth and about two-thirds of online growth. In short, Asia is already the worlds consumption growth engine and the position is likely to be reinforced over the next decade.

As McKinsey Global Institute puts it, disregarding Asias consumer markets would mean missing half the global consumption story. Futuristic retail topics of such have been an ongoing discussion, especially since the pandemic struck. This time, it is also hot on the agenda at eTail Asia 2022, an event that is making a live and in-person return after two years, this 7-9 June 2022 at Resorts World Convention Center Singapore.

As the industrys very best gathers in the three-day summit, eTail Asia will bring together the top international and home-grown retailers and eCommerce brands as well as subject matter experts in Asia. Among them is Dr Angshuman Ghosh, Head of Data Science for Sony Research India. Dr Angshuman will be part of a panel discussion, sharing insights and best practices based on his experiences on how data science and digital technologies be used to optimize business decision making and engage customer experience.

Tech Wire Asia (TWA) discussed with Dr Angshuman how these new sources, fed into systems powered by machine learning and AI, are at the heart of the digital transformation for many businesses across most industries. However, the sheer abundance of information and a lack of know-how can be overwhelming for most organizations.

What will you be sharing at eTail Asia?

Dr Angshuman Ghosh, Head of Data Science for Sony Research India

I am very happy and excited to join the eTail Asia conference as a speaker. I will be part of a panel discussion on 7th June at 14:05 pm SGT. I have significant work experience in both offline retail and eCommerce domains. I will share insights and best practices based on my experiences about how we can use data science and digital technologies to optimize business decision-making and engage customer experience.

What are the key topics you are keen to listen to and why is eTail a must not miss event?

eTail is one of the best conferences globally. Senior executives from the topmost global brands will be speaking at the conference. I am particularly interested to know about future trends in the retail and eCommerce industries and how data and digital technologies are creating value for top global companies and brands.

With that said, what are the common mistakes organizations make when it comes to understanding their customers?

As data grows exponentially, most companies take a reactive and unorganized approach. Companies may not capture data across the lifecycle or may not have processes for ensuring data validity and quality.

Without the right data and good data quality, the analysis may be incomplete or misleading. Without the right data analysis, customer understanding will be incorrect leading to suboptimal or wrong decisions.

For large enterprises, what complexities arise when managing input from various sources today?

There are three main complexities in a large company when trying to manage data from different sources. Firstly, different types of data require different tools and technologies to capture specific data to be compatible with each other.

Secondly, this information must be stored using a standardized format and have processes for ensuring data refresh and quality. Thirdly, data access and governance have to be managed efficiently to ensure proper usage and unlock its value.

How does a large company use information from consumers to not only improve their products and services, but also understand their demands?

Data helps to understand customer demand. Demand Forecasting is a critical application for many large companies including those in retail and media industries. In retail and eCommerce industries, data helps us predict the future demand for different products and plan all the operations and supply chain activities.

In the Media industry, user viewership and interaction data help us understand content preferences and this, in turn, helps us create more relevant content or build recommendation engines.

How has emerging technologies in data management and the enhancements in machine learning capabilities enhanced its use by both large and small enterprises today?

Emerging tools and technologies have transformed the entire data ecosystem. Open source and free tools such as Python or R have played a big role in this transformation. Earlier only large companies with big budgets could analyze lots of data using costly licensed software. But now any company, big or small, can make use of their data using free and open-source tools.

Cloud technologies such as AWS or Azure are also playing a key role by allowing every enterprise to make use of the best data-related services on-demand and pay for only their usage without spending a fortune on infrastructure.

Where do organizations draw the line when it comes to privacy, especially with collecting information and predicting what customers need?

User privacy is a very important topic and finally, it is getting its due importance. Europe has implemented stringent data privacy laws to protect user data and privacy. Even big-tech companies such as Google and Facebook have paid hefty fines for violating data privacy regulations. It is better to take a proactive approach to data privacy and security.

Organizations must classify input into different groups based on privacy requirements and regulations. Access to each class of data should be given to only appropriate stakeholders and any inappropriate usage should be prohibited by design.

With perfecting the customer experience the goal for most organizations today, is AI enough to solve this or do businesses still need to offer a personalized human approach towards them?

While AI and Data Science have revolutionized many aspects of the business world, human focused approaches are still very much relevant. There are use cases where AI can do much better than humans and those tasks should be handled by AI.

However, customers are human beings after all and humans are emotional and social beings who value connection with other humans. So, there are cases where customers may still prefer a human-centric approach. Balancing the usage of AI and a personalized human approach may be ideal for most customer-facing businesses.

UW-developed, cloud-based astrodynamics platform to discover and track asteroids – University of Washington

News releases | Research | Science

May 31, 2022

A novel algorithm developed by University of Washington researchers to discover asteroids in the solar system has proved its mettle. The first candidate asteroids identified by the algorithm known as Tracklet-less Heliocentric Orbit Recovery, or THOR have been confirmed by the International Astronomical Unions Minor Planet Center.

The Asteroid Institute, a program of B612 Foundation, has been running THOR on its cloud-based astrodynamics platform Asteroid Discovery Analysis and Mapping, or ADAM to identify and track asteroids. With confirmation of these new asteroids by the Minor Planet Center and their addition to its registry, researchers using the Asteroid Institutes resources can submit thousands of additional new discoveries.

A comprehensive map of the solar system gives astronomers critical insights both for science and planetary defense, said Matthew Holman, dynamicist and search algorithm expert at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian and the former director of the Minor Planet Center. Tracklet-less algorithms such as THOR greatly expand the kinds of datasets astronomers can use in building such a map.

THOR was co-created by Mario Juri, a UW associate professor of astronomy and director of the UWs DiRAC Institute, and Joachim Moeyens, a UW graduate student in astronomy. They and their UW collaborators unveiled THOR in a paper published last year in The Astronomical Journal. It links points of light in different sky images that are consistent with asteroid orbits. Unlike current state-of-the-art codes, THOR does not require the telescope to observe the sky in a particular pattern for asteroids to be discoverable.

Visualizing the trajectories through the solar system of asteroids discovered by ADAM and THOR.B612 Asteroid Institute/University of Washington DiRAC Institute/OpenSpace Project

The Asteroid Institutes ADAM platform is an open-source computational system that runs astrodynamics algorithms at large scale using Google Cloud, in particular the scalable computational and storage capabilities in Google Compute Engine, Google Cloud Storage and Google Kubernetes Engine.

The work of the Asteroid Institute is critical because astronomers are reaching the limits of whats discoverable with current techniques and telescopes, said Juri, who is also a senior data science fellow with the UW eScience Institute. Our team is pleased to work alongside the Asteroid Institute to enable mapping of the solar system using Google Cloud.

Researchers can now begin systematic explorations of large datasets that were previously not usable for discovering asteroids. THOR recognizes asteroids and, most importantly, calculates their orbits well enough to be recognized by the Minor Planet Center as tracked asteroids.

Moeyens searched a 30-day window of images from the NOIRLab Source Catalog, a collection of nearly 68 billion observations taken by the National Optical Astronomy Observatory telescopes between 2012 and 2019, and submitted a small initial subset of discoveries to the Minor Planet Center for official recognition and validation. Now that the computational discovery technique has been validated, thousands of new discoveries from the catalog and other datasets are expected to follow.

Discovering and tracking asteroids is crucial to understanding our solar system, enabling development of space and protecting our planet from asteroid impacts, said Ed Lu, executive director of the Asteroid Institute. With THOR running on ADAM, any telescope with an archive can now become an asteroid search telescope. We are using the power of massive computation to enable not only more discoveries from existing telescopes, but also to find and track asteroids in historical images of the sky that had gone previously unnoticed because they were never intended for asteroid searches.

The B612 Foundation recently announced an additional $2.3 million in leadership gifts to advance these efforts.

The collaborative efforts of Google Cloud, B612s Asteroid Institute and the University of Washingtons DiRAC Institute make this work possible.

For more information, contact Juri at mjuric@uw.edu and Moeyens at moeyensj@uw.edu.

Drawing data: I make art from the bodily experience of long-distance running – The Conversation Indonesia

In 1979, the American artist Allan Kaprow wrote Performing Life, an important essay in the history of Western art arguing for the blurring of art and life.

Kaprow suggested we perform art in our everyday living by paying attention to invisible sensations and the details of existence we take for granted.

He wanted us to notice the way air and spit are exchanged when talking with friends; the effects of bodies touching; the rhythm of breathing. Kaprows essay has served as an instructive piece for living. As an artist, I see and make art from anything and everything.

Take long-distance running, for example.

When a friend began coaching me to run long distances, I consequently began drawing as well.

Running in the 21st century involves drawing lines. More important than sneakers are GPS devices (like smartphones and watches that sync with exercise apps) to track and analyse every meaningful and meaningless detail of your performance.

I use the app Strava. It visualises my routes, average pace, heart rate, elevation and calories burned.

Driven by competition, self-improvement and the well-being revolution, it is easy to become fixated on this data. But I am fixated for other reasons as well.

When I run, Strava maps my route with a meandering GPS line. I have become absorbed in this line literally sensing it when Im running.

As each foot touches the ground I feel myself drawing the GPS line slowly and incrementally. This embodied connection to my data changes my runs. I spontaneously vary my routes to achieve a particular line.

Run around a pole ten times, burst into a zig-zag, make a circle in the park. I manoeuvre to affect the graphic form to one of my imagining.

Cyclists and runners worldwide have recently discovered the creative possibilities of GPS data. This is called GPS Art or Strava Art. Cycling or running routes to visualise a predetermined shape or thing proved popular during the pandemic. Rabbits, Elvis and the middle finger have been plotted, cycled and run. The data version of skywriting.

As novel as Strava Art is, I am not creating it. Running and drawing are both body techniques connected to gesture, touch, feeling, listening, looking and imagining.

While GPS data can visualise every quantifiable detail about my run, it cant tell me how it felt to run.

Anyone who runs long distances knows that performance is impacted by how you feel on the day, what the run is soothing. Life problems, levels of stress, hormones, depression, happiness, whether you slept well, how much you ate and the weather all impact a run.

While self-tracking data appears infallible that is, numerical, scientific and objective we know it is biased. Data scientists Catherine D'Ignazio and Lauren Klein argue in their book Data Feminism that data science is skewed towards to those who wield power, which is disproportionately elite, straight, white, able-bodied, cisgender men from the Global North.

Data feminism reveals how systems of counting and classification hide inequalities. The role of data feminism is to use this understanding of what is hidden to visualise alternatives, and they suggest converting qualitative experience into data.

This is where the outmoded art of drawing and the antiquated technologies of charcoal and pencil can extend exercise data and bring new meaning to the personal experience of running.

I have been re-drawing my data to make visible what Strava cannot. The unheroic stuff: emotions, persistent thoughts, body sensations like the pressing of my bladder, the location of public toilets, social interactions with strangers, lyrics from the songs I listen to, and the weather.

The drawings are deliberately messy scribbles, diaristic and fragmented, smudged and imprecise. They re-label information to reflect what is missing that Im a middle-aged woman artist mother who is happy to remain mediocre at running.

Picture a nagging bladder instead of speed; scribble the arrival and departure of joy and anxiety instead of pace; zig-zag through neurotic repetitive thoughts instead of calories burned; trace desires, dreads and dreams instead of personal bests.

Thats not to say I dont enjoy Strava or that I dont have running goals. But the drawings offer different data that short circuits the dominance of quantifying every aspect of human experience.

The effects of bringing art and life (or running and drawing) together are confrontational. As Kaprow noted, anyone who has jogged seriously [] knows that in the beginning, as you confront your body, you face your psyche as well.

The longer more testing runs produce more data; they also produce more complex encounters with the self and more convoluted drawings.

These drawings offer alternative data not tied to endurance or personal glory. They undo the slick corporate aesthetic of exercise apps and their socially networked metrics, leader boards, badges and medals.

This is a feminist practice that builds on the work of Catriona Menzies-Pike and Sandra Faulkner who give alternative accounts of running from the perspective of women.

Running and drawing can be autotelic activities: activities where the purpose of doing it is doing it. In this highly surveilled, techno-obsessed, capital driven, multi-tasking time, the value of sporting or creative activities delivering no measurable (or financial) results may appear old-fashioned.

But then again, so can running without a self-tracking device. This is something I am willing to try.

Gifted writer and poet, Krystal O. Dethan has released an insightful indie poetry book titled Beautiful and Free, The Journey of Krystal O. Dethan which chronicles her life as a descendant of a jamaican national hero, an expat now, and creating her own life.

It would seem as if Krystal was born with the innate proclivity for writing. The prodigiously gifted poet had always written lyrical poetry and songs right from her childhood. I loved writing, I loved to read since I was 6 years old. So I took years to write songs and poetry but it was recently as two years ago that I decided to take my writing seriously and to create and publish my art, she recalled.

Krystal appreciates all writing niches but revealed she has a special preference for poetry, and even studied it as her major in college. While others see poetry as just another write-up, Krystal sees a song of the soul. She also enjoys literature and essays on psychology and spirituality as well.

Krystal recently revealed that her role model in poetry is American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist, Dr Maya Angelou. Krysta admires her for her wisdom, intelligence, the positivity and progress she spreads in the black community which in turn made the greater community a better place to live in.

Krystalis not limited to writing alone. Her entrepreneurial drive has led her to launch cristalbeaute.fr, her new e-commerce beauty site. Cristal Beaute offers hair, body and nail products that enhance beauty.. On the writing front, Krystal has a book being edited now. Its about manifesting beauty into your life and being grateful for the experiences you make in life. In the meantime I have started a new poetry collection with a whole new theme, she said.

In her new poetry, Beautiful and Free, Krystal acknowledged 5 first names:

Lolita, Ken, Keisha, Tom and Gabby. She recently revealed who these figures are and the roles they play in her life. Sheis the real MVP in this Poetry Collection. Lolita, my great grandmother, living with her during her final years, she would tell me stories of my history, my ancestors and where I came from. She was never perfect but she was strong with a waif like figure and really smart. She was a self made woman and she really inspired me.

Continuing down the family tree, Krystal said: Ken is her son, my grandfather, and Keisha is my mother. We are all descendants of the same lineage that my great grandmother would teach me about. Tom is my husband and Gabby my son. We are starting a new future with another little member joining us shortly. So I believed it was only right to release this poetry book acknowledging who made up the roots of my life and to those who make up the branches of this family tree.

Indeed, family is everything for Krystal. When shes not creating inspirational content, she spends her free time with her family and nurturing her environment. Im very big on family life. I garden, spend quality time with my husband and son. I enjoy cooking and trying new foods and going to new places. I enjoy watching lectures by Jordan Peterson and learning about ancient religions and Christianity, she said of her hobbies and pastime.

Krystal has a piece of advice for her readers and anyone who will come across this press release. It is up to you to decide who you are. Every decision, every thought positive or negative defines you. How will you challenge societys demands of you and live to be who you really want to be? Answer this question first before making any decisions because only you will have to live with the consequences she advised.

Fat is Not Fit – The Stream

I have no desire to embarrass anyone who is obese. Nor am I here to criticize or insult or accuse. Quite the contrary. Im here to help, knowing firsthand how difficult it can be to shed unwanted pounds and how self-conscious we can be when were overweight. But the fact that today it is politically correct to celebrate obesity is a dangerous bridge too far. Love and truth compel us to speak.

What prompted me to address this now was a tweet from Dr. Jordan Peterson in which he stated, The epidemic of mandatory politically correct stupidity continues, with reference to a New York Post article by Douglas Murray which takes on the beauty of obesity.

Murrays article, published May 19, was titled, Talk about deadly obesity risks in America? Fat chance.

He began by saying this: Is it fun to be fat? Thats what Cosmopolitan magazine claimed in February 2021. That months cover was of a morbidly obese woman looking cheerful while attempting some acrobatics. The headline: This is healthy! 11 women on why wellness doesnt have to be one size fits all.

He continued,

The timing could hardly have been worse. After all, this was in a period when the Coronavirus was leading to lockdowns around the world. And one thing we knew very early about the virus was that one of the main factors that lead to hospitalizations and even death was if the patient was fat. Almost nothing in the often confusing COVID era was ever as clear as this. Nearly 80% of Americans who were hospitalized with COVID were obese. And just as being obese put you at special risk from the virus, so losing weight lessened your chances of being hospitalized.

I question whether I would be alive today if I had not made a radical lifestyle change in 2014 (all with Gods grace and help), going from 275 to 180 lbs. in less than 8 months. And this was not by dieting but my getting rid of all unhealthy foods and eating only healthy foods, without exception and without deviation.

My life has been radically, dramatically, wonderfully transformed, and to this moment, at the age of 67, I am thriving in every way, physically and mentally and emotionally and spiritually. It feels great to be thin and fit, especially when you were once obese as I was.

But I was not obese because I was a glutton. I was obese (or, at the other times, simply overweight) because of my lifelong habit of eating unhealthy foods, going back to my childhood, when I would have four Oreo cookies for breakfast. Then there was my discovery of New York pizza at the age of 15. No wonder I was a chocoholic (and, at times, pizzaholic!) for most of my life, unable to shed much weight. Being a disciplined but unhealthy eater is hardly the formula for life.

According to the WebMD website, health risks linked to obesity include: heart disease and stroke; high blood pressure; diabetes; some cancers; gallbladder disease and gallstones; osteoarthritis; gout; breathing problems, such as sleep apnea and asthma.

In other words, being obese often leads to premature death. As expressed by the bestselling author Dr. Joel Fuhrman, we are digging our own graves with forks and knives. Why on earth would we celebrate that?

In 2016, Dr. Fuhrman noted that, Research presented at an American Heart Association meeting linked consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages to hundreds of thousands of deaths worldwide 180,000 deaths per year.

Yet these drinks form a regular part of many of our diets, despite the health risks involved.

He also wrote this in 2016 (and things have only gotten worse since then):

The standard American diet is damaging our children, placing them at a much higher risk of getting chronic diseases than previous generations. Data from a survey of thousands of U.S. teenagers has reported sobering news about the health of our nations young people.

The researchers found that 49% of overweight teenagers and 37% of normal-weight teenagers had one or more risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including diabetes, high LDL cholesterol, and hypertension. Twenty-three percent of teens are prediabetic or diabetic a number that has more than doubled in the past ten years. Twenty-two percent of teens have high, or borderline high LDL cholesterol levels. Fourteen percent of teens have hypertension or prehypertension.

Another recent study, which followed U.S. children for 24 years, found that childhood obesity was the greatest risk factor for premature death due to chronic disease.

As for the percentage of Americans who are obese today, the numbers are sobering and concerning. As reported by the CDC, The US obesity prevalence was 41.9% in 2017 March 2020.

From 1999 2000 through 2017 March 2020, US obesity prevalence increased from 30.5% to 41.9%. During the same time, the prevalence of severe obesity increased from 4.7% to 9.2%.

Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. These are among the leading causes of preventable, premature death.

The estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the United States was nearly $173 billion in 2019 dollars. Medical costs for adults who had obesity were $1,861 higher than medical costs for people with healthy weight.

To say it again, I have no desire to embarrass anyone who is obese. I am not here to body shame or cast stones of condemnation. Your weight does not define who you are on the inside or the quality of your character, and some of you desperately want to get in shape but have tried every method and failed. My heart really does go out to you.

But carrying those extra pounds is always detrimental. Always. And it can often be deadly.

Lets not glorify fatness and lets not celebrate it. To do that is truly sick in every sense of the word.

NRAtrumpeting their own version of reality

Dear Editor:

People in the United States continue to pay a terrible price for their Second Amendment right to bear arms.

The latest Texas school shooting rampage with an assault rifle resulted in the deaths of 19 children and two teachers. A few days later the National Rifle Association convention was held, also in Texas. Rather than acknowledge the fact that lax gun laws and excessive gun ownership played a part in the slaughter, the NRA chose to trumpet their own version of reality once again.

Citing mental health, rather than gun possession problems, as well as the need for even more guns to combat the bad people already carrying guns, was their way of explaining the problem.

What should be an issue of protecting children and other vulnerable people against gun violence, has become both political and self-serving for the NRA and gun manufacturers.

By way of political payments to government representatives in the U.S., these groups of pro-gun advocates are placing their own interests ahead of the lives of their citizens. Money rather than any partisan ideal is the driving force behind an effort which continues to result in murders which are unique to the United States.

Anti-gun protests and talk of stricter gun control will not change the minds of those with vested interests in continuing gun sales. Money is the issue and there is hope that money from anti-gun sources is beginning to have an effect. A bad guy without a gun cannot shoot a good guy.

Spiller Road proposal will impact area negatively

Dear Editor:

Canadian Horizons has proposed a new plan for the Spiller Road property and has asked for OCP amendments and zoning changes (Herald, May 18).

It is a great opportunity for the developer to realize great financial gains but also for the city to create a suitable, sustainable housing area that fits into the delicate hillside environment of our precious Okanagan.

Although the plan has fewer units than the development proposed in 2021 and while Penticton needs more housing, it is still a huge plan which will impact the area negatively in various ways.

The increase in the amount of traffic is a risk for drivers and emergency vehicles as well as escape routes in case of fires. The requirement for a new water reservoir, sewer line, and upgraded road infrastructure will stress our city's water resources and greatly damage the sensitive environment. It is also very near the citys landfill.

The green space in the design will restrict wildlife movement, and the plans would require a total clearcut of the acreage, potentially impacting species and watersheds and leaving us vulnerable to landslides.

There is no accommodation for a community garden or gathering area to create a place for residents to meet and share activities. Housing units are much too close together and do not adopt the country residential character in any way. The design is a typical suburb that does not fit with our modern ideology of healthful living.

This proposal will not provide housing within the reach of the majority of Penticton residents. Who is it for? Investors? Short- term rentals? What is the accommodation for units that would really offer shelter to low and medium income citizens who contribute so much to our city and have no where to live? Can the city require this accommodation in the discussion of the amendments requested by the developer? If not, why not?

And last but not least, the proposal at this stage does not state whether the buildings will all be electrically heated and cooled. Without strict guidelines from the city on requiring all new homes/buildings to not use fossil fuels, the City of Penticton will not be able to ever reach the CCAP emission reduction targets. Natural gas and

Renewable Natural gas still emit methane, nitrogen oxides, and other dangerous chemicals and are harmful to the health and the planet's future.

This Canadian Horizons proposal has a long way to go to fitting in to Penticton's OCP and vision for a sustainable, resilient future for people, other species, and our climate future.

Lets work to design model communities and become the gem of the Okanagan.

RDOSwill be paying for Penticton bike lanes

Dear Editor:

Elvena Slumps prodigious efforts to address recreational fee structures seems to have gained some traction (Herald, May 17). While offering congratulations on an anticipated review may we proffer information regarding a perhaps unnoticed previous victorious fiscal windfall.

Always eager to spend, the B.C. government has allowed the general public to invest some provincial tax revenue to assist in funding the vital bike path. Indirectly, and unwillingly, the periphery folk have thus already shared the expense of the pricey bike lane folly.

Without doubt the bike path user fees for non-residents will top the list, and the roughly 860 Gs will doubtlessly soon be recovered.

Hostile energy policies of current government

Dear Editor:

It was wonderful to see the green up along the Okanagan Connector this spring. Thanks to cool weather and good moisture the Balsam Root and Saskatoon blossoms were more extravagant than ever. Birds were back and new cow-calf pairs were in the fields. Thats some of the best of Canada.

But a drive to Kamloops also lets you see some of the worst of Canada in our failing policies on resource and environmental issues.

Unending lines of tanker cars moving oil to the coast are stunning. Its disturbing that those rail lines cling to the banks of the Thompson- Fraser Rivers where the risk of derailments and large scale pollution is high. Why dont the environmentalists protest this perilous practice? Maybe its because theres more money in blocking pipelines than trains.

Oil trains transit numerous communities and holocausts, like the one that devastated Lac Megantic, are a possibility. Trains were absolved from starting the fire that destroyed Lytton last summer.

Justin Trudeau simplistically chose to blame climate change instead; although theres little evidence that climate can actually start fires.

You can also see the stumbling construction of the Trans-Mountain Pipeline which is a much safer way to move oil. Oil and gas are going to market for the foreseeable future, so it makes sense to move the product as safely as possible.

Hopefully, construction wont be suspended for hummingbird nesting again this year. They seem better able to cope with moving trains than buried pipelines.

Why do we need to own this $21.4 billion pipeline? Private enterprise has built pipelines for the last 70 years, but refused to have anything to do with this boondoggle because of the hostile energy policies of the current government.

In spite of the governments destructive policies, energy products are still our major export commodity. Were cashing in on high oil prices right now, and could be a lot wealthier if we werent so devoted to suffocating our export potential. Unfortunately, were limited by the ideologically driven carpetbaggers from Quebec for the foreseeable future.

Now the Biden Administration wants more Canadian oil to relieve supply shortages and lower pump prices; as long as no more pipelines are involved. Lets not get suckered down that path again, considering that cancellation of Keystone XL was Job No. 1 for Biden two years ago. Political exploitation of the climate is quite popular, but getting re-elected is even more important.

City council ignoring wishes of residentials

Dear Editor:

Millions of dollars flow through Penticton councils hands. I suspect in time this becomes blas. Easy come, easy go for everyone but residentials.

One example of this is the recent decision of council to borrow from the electrical fund to finish the lake-to-lake bicycle route. As one councillor explained to me they were only borrowing this money; so I guess that is supposed to mean the fund is not being depleted. I have heard this kind of reasoning before.

You cant borrow from the electric fund and claim you are not depleting it. Its easy to shift numbers from one column to another.

But there is only one taxpayer and if you borrow money from the electrical fund to spend that means you intend on paying it back which means more tax dollars leached from the pockets of hapless Residentials to replace those funds.

I am sure we all remember how our electrical bills rapidly increased as the previous council was determined to put infrastructure funds aside for needed future projects. Taxpayers naturally assumed that meant needed sewer; water and storm drain replacements and an increased electrical grid as consumption rises. This was all for a good cause as those funds would be there for expensive but necessary upgrades and repairs as needed.

However it doesnt seem to have turned out that way: Infrastructure costs have turned into pet projects like bicycle lanes.

I attended the Penticton Vees homecoming parade. On Martin Street a group of cyclists passed me headed south towards Westminster. There must have been somewhere between 30 and 50 of them and they werent using the newly-installed bicycle lanes. They were using the full width of the driving lane so drivers were forced to follow behind.

Bicycle lanes are a feel-good project and just another obstruction to exasperate drivers by this unfriendly to motorists council.

Subsequently, I heard from two different sources that bicycle clubs dont like the bike lanes. They are too dangerous.

Go figure.

So it is not just a problem of lack of use it is also a problem of refusal of use.

Good value for the taxpayer some claim.

What do you think? Should all current council members running for re-election publicly commit if re-elected they will give up their vehicles and use busses; bicycles or walk for their next term.

Conservative hopeful on conservative podcast

Dear Editor:

It seems my recent letter indicating that Pierre Poilievre was making some left-wing folks nervous, hit a nerve. Long-time Justin super fan, Patrick MacDonald referenced said comment, in his letter in the May 26 edition indicating how terrified he was of the Conservative leadership hopeful.

He referenced Poilievres taking part in a podcast by right-wing podcaster, Dr, Jordan Peterson, insinuating that Peterson was a far-right conservative. I know its probably shocking to MacDonald that a Conservative candidate for the leadership of the Conservative party would go on a conservative podcast. He, of course dismisses Petersons opinions by stating he has little credibility amongst educated people.

Im guessing MacDonald got his information from a smear report on CTV News where the reporter used a source who regularly calls Israel Nazis, to disparage both Peterson and Poilievre. I listened to the podcast and I agree with MacDonald. Folks should listen to it. Theyll get a clear take away that Poilievre is in fact nothing like Donald Trump.

MacDonald also referenced that Poilievre was reading a book by Peterson called 12 Rules for Life. How dare he! Of course, we wont mention his golden boy, Justins self admitted admiration of communist China along with the departed Trudeau family friend Fidel Castro. Nothing to see there, folks.

One point in the podcast that I noted was Poilievres indication that if elected prime minister, he would end government subsidies to media. Curious that.

Tough journey for this Conservative voter

Dear Editor:

Re:Im a wannabe Conservative supporter,(Herald letters, May 28).

The letter from Lloyd Atkins reflects my sentiments entirely

I was a lifelong ProgressiveConservative and was at the 1991 convention in Ottawa were I voted for Kim Campbell over Jean Charest

I even supported Stephen Harper for leader a few years later, but did not notice the progressive manta of the party disappeared for several years until I was forced to vote for Justin Trudeau in his first victory. We actually elected a Liberal

in Kelowna-Lake Country, Stephen Fuhr for the first time in 50 years, but even though he was a great MP he was defeated in the next election.

After eight years of Trudeau, I was alienated by many issues including restrictions regarding COVID border where I was forced to spend 14 days in quarantine even though fully vaccinated in the U.S. before coming back to Canada,

I found Erin OToole reasonable enough to vote Conservative again

In the next election I could probably vote for Jean Charest who I rejected in 1991, but would never vote for a party headed by Pierre Polivere.

Virginia Grace Hanson Obituary – Green Bay Press Gazette

Virginia Grace Hanson

Ellison Bay - Virginia Grace (Kramer) Hanson, of Ellison Bay, passed away May 15, 2022 at Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay at the age of 97.

Virginia was a lifelong Door County resident. She was born in the German Settlement a few miles south of Sister Bay on July 15, 1924, to Melvin and Mabel (Grasse) Kramer. On October 2, 1943, she married Russell Hanson of Ellison Bay at Trinity Lutheran Church. They farmed and lived on the Hanson Homestead on top of the Ellison Bay hill all of their 64 years. She attended Liberty Grove and Sister Bay grade schools and three years at Gibraltar High School. Her senior year, her family moved to Brussels, where her father was a cheese maker. She went to Brussels High School and graduated in 1942. There she met all of her Belgian friends; their friendship continued all of these years. She played clarinet and violin in the band. Virginia was baptized in Sawyer, Sturgeon Bay and confirmed in 1941 at Zion Lutheran Church in Sister Bay.

Russell passed away April 30, 2008. They enjoyed many winters at their home in Ruskin, Florida and traveled to Sweden, where Russell's father, Albert, was born. Virginia enjoyed refinishing many pieces of antique furniture and spent many hours searching family history of the Hanson and Kramer families. She was a member of the Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church and the Liberty Grove Historical Society, which she is proud to be a part of. She was always excited to see the large freighters pass through the waters of Green Bay. This year in early spring, she was thrilled to see her first of many from her home. Her love of music- she taught herself to play the button accordion- Polka music was her favorite. Virginia continued living on the Hanson Homestead until her passing.

She will be missed dearly by her daughters, Cheryl (Gene) Olson and Vicky (Bob) Herman; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Hanson; sister, Verna Anderson; and nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Jay (Vicki) Olson of Ellison Bay, Marcy (Gary) Anderson of Cedar Grove, Jody Olson of Ellison Bay, Paula Hanson of Sturgeon Bay, Heidi Wilkins of Denver, NC, Amanda (Troy) Kelly of Longhorn, PA, and Emily (Josh) Opitz of Sister Bay; 14 great-grandchildren, Christopher (Becca) Peterson, Nicholas (Michaela) Peterson, Logan Peterson, Brianna (Michael) Long, Griffin Olson, Preston Pluff, Kayla Olson, Eva Olson, Austin Hanson, Avery Bies, Samuel Wilkins, Brooklyn Kelly, Jordan Kelly, and Arlo Opitz; six great great-grandchildren, Madison, Brinleigh, Paisley, and Saylor Long and Calvin and Gianna Peterson.

Virginia's life was celebrated during a funeral service at Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church in Ellison Bay on Friday, May 20, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. Visitation was held at church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Virginia would be so proud that her great-grandchildren (Christopher, Nicholas, Logan, Brianna, Griffin, Kayla, Eva, Austin, Avery, Samuel, Jordan, Brooklyn, and Arlo) were honored to carry her to her final resting place in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, the last one laid to rest within the cemetery.

If desired, memorial contributions may be given to Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church or Liberty Grove Historical Society.

The family would like to thank Door County Medical Center, Dr. Mildenberg, Dr. Binard, all the special nurses and the staff that cared for and treated Virginia with kindness and always a smile. There was always a stop at the hospital gift shop.

Casperson Funeral Home of Sister Bay assisted the Hanson family. Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Virginia may be shared with her family through her tribute page at http://www.caspersonfuneralhome.com.
