Chess Olympiad: Magnus Carlsen Is Still on Top of His Game – The New York Times

The chess world was left reeling by the surprise announcement last month that its biggest star, Magnus Carlsen, would surrender his world title, citing a lack of motivation.

But Carlsen is not going away and expects to continue playing in events other than the world championship. He is playing Board 1 for Norway at the Chess Olympiad in Chennai, India.

Through Monday, he was 6-0-3, but his team was down in 41st place.

The tournament, considered the worlds top international team event, is normally held every two years, but it has not been held in person since 2018 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Uzbekistan led the open competition with a day to go, and India was ahead in the womens event.

The event was also the site of the election for president of the International Chess Federation. The current president, Arkady V. Dvorkovich of Russia, faced Andrii Baryshpolets, a Ukrainian grandmaster who said the war in Ukraine was an impetus for me to fight for changes.

But the result was a landslide: Dvorkovich received 157 votes to 16 for Baryshpolets.

You might have seen Niesha Butler scoring points as a professional basketball player. But now shes scoring points for education, bringing a bit of Silicon Valley to Brooklyn. Butler opened the S.T.E.A.M. Champs education center in July, CBS News reports. That's STEM with an extra "a" for arts. The New York location teaches skills from computer coding to robotics to chess. We are a science, technology, engineering, arts and math center, says Butler. We wanted to include art. The kids are on the computer a lot and they don't have a lot of unplugged activities. But the STEM seed was planted when she was 12 and took her first computer science class, CBS News reports.I really look back to that time because that set the foundation that gave me the confidence that gave me the skill. It was a yearlong class and I realized I was the only female in that class. And, of course, the only person of color in that class. A poll released by Pew Research Center last year found Black people account for just 9 percent of the STEM workforce, a statistic Butler wants to change. 7-year old Theodore Vann is one of her students, though a STEM job is just one of his career goals. I want to be a basketball player, soccer player, tennis player. And I want to be a scientist, a pizza chef, and I want to go up to space, Vann says. Butler believes S.T.E.A.M. Champs is the country's first Afro-Latina -owned educational center specializing in coding and robotics and says she never imaged this would be her life after basketball. No, I didnt, she says. I'm actually having a purpose, to make a difference in these kids lives. A difference that could open young minds to new possibilities and build a pathway to success.

Maltese national teams return from Chess Olympiad in India – Times of Malta

The womens and mens national teams participated in the bi-annual Chess Olympiad held in Chennai, India.

The Olympiad was originally planned to be held in Moscow and was moved to India just over four months ago.

India exceeded all expectations by managing to hold the biggest and one of the best ever organized Olympiads in such a short period of time.

Malta Chess Federation president Geoffrey Borg, who is considered an expert in organizing such large events, was involved as a consultant. He was also the FIDE Delegate at the Olympiads. International Arbiter Noel Grima was also part of the contingent as an arbiter of the Womens Olympiad.

The Maltese womens team consisted of Filipina Thornton (board 1), Jamie Farrugia (board 2), Urna Psaila (board 3), Milena Stagno (board 4) and Hayley Thornton (reserve).

At 11 years, Haley Thornton was one of the youngest participants in this Olympiad and drew a lot of attention from the international media and public. Peter Sammut Briffa was the team captain.

The womens team fared as expected.

It would have been disappointing if we didnt win a medal: Harika – Sportstar

Ever since she made her Olympiad debut, way back in 2004, Dronavalli Harika wanted to be part of an Indian womens team that climbed the podium. When she had the best chance of realising that dream, she wasnt going to miss it even if that meant being taken to the labour room straight from the tournament hall.

It didnt quite come to that, though there was a time she felt that could well be the case. It turned out to be a false pain.

That pain soon made for joy: India won the bronze medal for the first time in history at the Womens Chess Olympiad at Mamallapuram on Tuesday. True, the team was hoping to take the gold and was well poised for that, until it lost on the final day to the United States.

Yes, it is disappointing that we could not win the gold after coming so well and performing consistently throughout the tournament, but winning the bronze is also a great achievement, I feel, Harika told The Hindu. This is my ninth Olympiad in a row I dont think any other Indian woman has played as many -- and an Olympiad team medal is something I desperately wanted all these years.

She was determined to play the Olympiad despite the late stage of her pregnancy. I could not have played if it was held outside India, she said. (It had been allotted to Russia but moved to Chennai after that country invaded Ukraine).

My doctor, Srilatha Gorthi, gave me the confidence that I could play, Harika said. And I am so glad that I played.

She did her job well too, despite her condition. She remained unbeaten on the second board. I am happy with the quality of my chess though not with the result, she said. The teams plan was that I would play only when it was most needed in the early part but I had to play consecutively as we were facing strong opposition.

She is all praise for her teammates Koneru Humpy, R. Vaishali, Tania Sachdev and Bhakti Kulkarni. I am really glad that we won a medal, as it would have been disastrous if we didnt at an Olympiad at home and were the favourite, she said.

Besides, it would have been a big disappointment for the organisers and all the fans who came in large numbers to support us. I think the Tamil Nadu government did a great job. It felt nice when the government recognised the teams (India 2 won the bronze in the open section) by announcing a cash prize of Rs. 1 crore each. That isnt something you normally expect in Indian chess.

R.B. Ramesh, the man who guided India to two Olympiad medals – Sportstar

Just a few days after coaching India 2 to a bronze medal at the Chess Olympiad, R.B. Ramesh has moved on to his next assignment. He has landed in the United States to help his ward R. Praggnanandhaas campaign at the FTX Crypto Cup, beginning in Miami on Monday.

Praggnanandhaa was part of the victorious Indian team at the Chennai Olympiad. And that was quite a young team too. Though seeded only 11th, the expectations were huge about Rameshs boys.

Besides Praggnanandha, the team contained three other teenagers, D. Gukesh, Nihal Sarin and Raunak Sadhwani. B. Adhiban, 29, completed the squad.

This, however, isnt the first Indian team to win an Olympiad medal under Rameshs training. In 2014, he had guided the Indian team to a first-ever Olympiad team medal.

Both the wins are special and we were the underdogs on both occasions, Ramesh told Sportstar over phone from the US on Saturday. But this time around, I knew that the team had chances for a medal. And when we won the bronze, we felt we should have won the gold.

He is happy that his boys did what was expected of them. Gukesh was of course too fantastic and he lived up to our expectations, scoring heavily on the top board, he said. I thought Nihal would show the consistency we needed on the second board and he remained unbeaten. I thought Praggnanandhaa would win us crucial points on the third board and he did that. Raunak scored a couple of superb wins on the fourth board and Adhiban too contributed.

Ramesh is glad that the team could do it at home. I never thought chess could become so popular in India, he said. It felt strange to hear people chanting Ramesh sir, Ramesh sir when I moved about at the venue in Mamallapuram. We were recognised at lounges and the airport security check as well.

He believes the Olympiad is a turning point for Indian chess. I think it is for the first time that chess has reached out to the common man, he said. During the last fortnight, I dont think there was anybody in Tamil Nadu that didnt know about the Chess Olympiad, thanks to the State governments organising and marketing of the tournament. Now we should ensure that chess doesn't lose the moment that it has got.

Pakistan’s recall of its Chess Olympiad team is a self-goal – The Indian Express

Pakistans Chess team arrived in Chennai with players from 200 countries for the 44th Chess Olympiad but was recalled because a symbolic torch relay through 75 cities had crossed Srinagar. This withdrawal reflects a self-damaging reaction to Kashmir by Pakistans deep state that poisons its peace, politics, and prosperity. We hope that despite the learning disability of Pakistans deep state, three structural changes convince it to end the export of terrorism to J&K and accept the Line of Control as the International Border. This decision will also place the Pakistani peoples prosperity ahead of the Pakistani armys plan of perpetual conflict.

Defeat in three formal wars birthed Pakistans fourth proxy war in J&K, starting in 1988. The first act of this proxy war midnight bomb blasts at the Central Telegraph Office and Srinagar Club in July 1988 was a symbolic public announcement of the return from training in Pakistan by the first batch of terrorists; the self-titled HAJY boys Hamid Sheikh, Ashfaq Wani, Javed Nalka and Yasin Malik. In September 1988, the first Kalashnikov was recovered from the mothers kitchen of Pakistan-returned BSc graduate Manzoor Islam in Kupwara the police used the small arms dictionary to identify the unfamiliar weapon.

Pakistans role in early assassinations is obvious: Inspector Saiddullah in Maisuma (who was the police face arresting Pakistan returned militants), Tika Lal Taploo in Lal Chowk (the RSS Valley head, who had taken a vocal position against Pakistan), Neelkanth Ganjoo in Hari Singh High Street (as sessions judge, he had delivered the death sentence to JKLF founder Maqbool Bhat), and Mohammed Din in Tangmarg (who received the Padma Shri for alerting the Indian army to Pakistans 1965 invasion of Rajouri).

Its unclear whether the deep history or events in 1988 caused the Valleys phase transformation. Deep history indeed provided fuel. But which of the many events? The dithering Maharaja taking Ramchandra Kaks poor advice in 1947? The marauders led by Major General Akbar Khan of the Pakistani Army that attacked India and crucified Salim Sherwani in Baramulla in 1947? The arrest of Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah in 1953? The return of the Haji Pir pass to Pakistan in the Tashkent agreement of 1965? The partition of Pakistan in 1971? The Simla agreement that resulted in India returning land and prisoners without freezing borders in 1972? Or General Ziaul Haq partnering with Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Mian Tufail Mohammad to Islamise his military after hanging Bhutto in 1979?

But the late 1980s promise by PoK President Sardar Qayyum Khan to General Zia to deliver Kashmir to Pakistan in two instalments has three possible triggers. First, Americas partnership with Afghanistans Mujahideen. Second, Rajiv Gandhis adamant call to Farooq Abdullah at his Gupkar Road residence in 1987 asking him to ensure that Muslim United Front candidates like Muhammad Yusuf Shah, later called Syed Salahuddin then Batmaloo mosque preacher, later Hizbul Mujahideen Chief, and currently Jihad Council Chief based in PoK must lose his Amira Kadal election. Finally, entitled politicians weaponised Article 370, religion and took Pakistans aid to grow their power, wealth, and dynasty. Even Baba-e-Quom Sheikh Abdullah whose 1982 funeral procession took 10 hours to cover the 8 km from the Polo View to Nagin because of lakhs of mourners became dynastic towards the end, with some people calling him Kunba Parast. On a recent visit to pay respects, we were sad that the grave of Sher-i-Kashmir who fought Pakistani marauders in the Valley alongside the Indian army in 1947 needs protection from desecration by a police platoon and concertina wire.

A better future beckons because of three structural changes. First, Army and Air Force cross-border strikes after Uri and Pulwama have changed Pakistani calculations that assumed perpetually timid Indian responses. With multi-decade security force requests for hot pursuit finally granted, the superior firepower of central forces is creating the conditions for a phased return to J&K Police enforcing law and order through context awareness, community embedding, local intelligence networks, local recruitment, language fluency, paramilitary support, and special operations groups.

Second, ending Article 370 could lead to the entry of new politicians in the next elections. Article 370 made J&K politics oligopolistic, if not monopolistic. Politicians in other parts of India are not less corrupt, myopic, or self-centred. But first-generation regional leaders like Lalu Prasad in Bihar, Karunanidhi in Tamil Nadu, Mayawati in Uttar Pradesh, Sharad Pawar in Maharashtra, and Jyoti Basu in West Bengal used politics to churn the status quo of power, elites, and class.

Third, J&K will see economic vibrancy with property rights (Article 370 legitimised a Tehsildars refusal to register a telephone exchange central government property in the name of the President of India), long-term investments (there is now a Radisson Hotel in Sonamarg), and strategy diversity (Kashmir, Jammu, and Ladakh will attract different jobs). Economist Albert Hirschman wisely suggested that interests trump passions.

Pakistan denied 14 talented players including Amer Karim, Junaid Sohail, Mehak Gul, Aleena Zahid and Wasif Zenobia the chance to win the Chess Olympiad because India politicised a prestigious international sporting event. This misunderstanding of politics is unsurprising most deep states are unfamiliar with Bernard Cricks 1962 book In Defence of Politics, which celebrated the self-healing genius of brutally competitive politics within a stable constitution. The then J&K Chief Justice A S Anand told us that his 1980s request to an Oxford University librarian for a copy of the Pakistani constitution got the smiling response: We dont keep magazines and periodicals. Strategy is the art of moving the possible to plausible and probable. Peace in Kashmir has moved from possible to plausible. Ongoing hard work in creating new jobs and politicians in Kashmir combined with the Pakistani people controlling their deep state will make it probable.

Optimizing data mining from EHRs to improve the patient experience – MedCity News

In a recent webinar, Carta Healthcare CEO Matt Hollingsworth shared how his health tech business is using AI for data mining to mobilize healthcare data to enable organizations to transform the patient experience. The companys goal is to reduce the burden for healthcare organizations to pull together both structured and unstructured data in a standardized format so all their data can be used efficiently and consistently across the organizationto ultimately improve patient care.

Rachel Ford Hutman, founder of Ford Hutman Media, moderated the discussion.

Hollingsworth highlighted how patients with complex conditions, such as his mother, need to bring binders of their healthcare data to healthcare appointments because their healthcare history is not easily accessible by their physicians. His company seeks to transform the status quo in healthcare data usability with automation using natural language processing.

On the flip side, Hollingsworth noted that although natural language processing and automation are important tools that healthcare institutions are leveraging, each healthcare institution is different in the way they store and process data. This means that clinical expertise from healthcare clinicians is needed to balance the limitations of AI in discerning where the appropriate information is stored. Similarly, AI can supplement humans ability to process large amounts of information in a short time.

Because the data is messy and complicated and the same data can live in multiple places and in different levels of completion, you dont necessarily get all the data when humans alone are mining the data, because people dont have an infinite amount of time to read through infinite documentation, Hollingsworth said. Its always possible to miss things.

On the other hand, lacking clinical knowledge means that you can end up with noisy data. For instance, problem lists are notoriously inaccurate. They were often accurate when they were first captured, but theres no one that goes along and sets resolution dates for things and figures out how long the condition was there. So you cant necessarily rely on that. But that information is present in things like HMPs and progress notes. So again, being able to deal with the fact that the data lives in multiple places, you have to have someone be able to teach the system where to find the high reliability sources of information. If you dont do that, youre going to end up with very noisy data that is inaccurate.

The One Practice That Is Separating The AI Successes From The Failures – Forbes

Anyone who has been following the news on AI in 2022 knows of the high rate of AI project failures. Somewhere between 60-80% of AI projects are failing according to different news sources, analysts, experts, and pundits. However, hidden among all that doom and gloom are the organizations who are succeeding. What are those 20%+ of organizations doing that are setting themselves apart from the failures, leading their projects to success?

Surprisingly, it has nothing to do with the people they hire or the technology or products they use. Indeed, many of the successful AI companies are using the same products and services from the same vendors that the companies with AI project failures are using. Likewise, the organizations with high rates of AI success dont have some magical team of data science or machine learning unicorns that somehow possess mysterious skills. Many of these successful AI organizations have the same skill sets that the average organization has. So if its not team and technology, what could it be?

Stop Treating your AI Projects like App Dev Projects

One of the biggest insights from these AI successes is that they dont see AI projects as application development or functionality-driven projects. Rather, they see them as data projects, or sometimes even data products. A data project doesnt start with an idea of what the functionality needs to be, but rather focuses on what insights or actions need to be gleaned from the data in whatever current shape its in.

It might seem somewhat obvious to many that AI projects are data projects, but perhaps the AI failures need to understand this at a greater level of detail. What makes an AI system work isnt specific code, but rather the data. The same algorithms with the same code can be used to generate text, recognize images, or have conversations the functionality is determined by the training data and the configuration of the system. Therefore, to achieve the desired outcome of an AI project requires focus on data iteration and data-centric methods versus coding-centric methods.

More specifically, the code for a facial recognition application doesnt actually do facial recognition, but rather the code just sets up the data to train the model and then execute the model once its trained. The data determines the functionality when it comes to AI and ML projects. So, if you are supposed to run AI projects as data projects, why are people still making the mistake of throwing developer-focused methods and approaches at what clearly doesnt have much to do with development?

Agile is Dead. Long live Agile.

The most popular methodology for application development is Agile, which focuses on short, iterative sprints tied to the immediate needs of the business user versus long development cycles. However, Agile falls flat when dealing with AI because it doesnt tell you how to deal with data, the core asset of an AI system.

Another approach is the Cross-Industry Standard Process for Data Mining (CRISP-DM), a decades old method that guides data mining efforts. However, its particularly focused on data projects and lacks some critical elements needed for AI projects, and hasnt been updated in over two decades. There have been other data-centric approaches, but they dont provide detail on how to run and manage data-centric projects, but they dont tell you how to deal with the specific requirements of AI model training and iteration, and they havent been built for Agile. This leads AI project managers to struggle with the right approach to run an AI project. No wonder so many AI organizations are making up their own approaches and failing so much at it.

CPMAI Methodology

CPMAI Methodology updates CRISP-DM with Agile and AI-specific details

The alternative to Agile is the waterfall methodology that has been around for decades. Like a waterfall, you can begin your project by designing your application, building your application, testing to make sure the application meets the criteria you built for and then deploying the application. The problem with waterfall is, especially for large and continuously changing projects, this process can take a very long time - sometimes upwards of 18-24 months. During this time the project requirements may change, new technology is created, or business needs may evolve past the original scope. This reality of waterfall is what led to the development of Agile as a more iterative approach. However, while Agile has been very successful for software development projects, if you try to use agile alone on data projects youre going to run into problems.

Take an AI-enabled chatbot for example. With each iteration the functionality doesnt change, its still a chatbot. The new iterations might change the number of words it can understand, add the ability to converse in new languages or increase the accuracy of the model but the functionality of the chatbot remains the same; it is still just a chatbot. Unlike with software projects where it may take twenty iterations to even get to the first functionality iteration of your model, AI projects have that functionality from the beginning. Therefore, you also need a data centric methodology to apply.

Taking the right approach to AI project Management

So if Agile doesnt work well, but we cant apply waterfall, and if CRISP-DM doesnt have what we need, what approaches are successful AI practitioners using? A hybrid of these approaches, of course! Agile and data centric methodologies do not compete, but rather they run on different timelines. The agile and data centric methodologies focus on different iterations. The data centric methodology focuses on the data, the agile methodology focuses on the functionality and they run together.

Agile doesnt tell you how to do things like data preparation, how to understand the data you have or need, how to build a model, retrain a model, and other critical functions of AI projects. This is why having a data centric methodology, going through specific steps in the correct order, and asking these questions in the beginning is essential. Approaches such as the Cognitive Project Management for AI (CPMAI) methodology are blending data-centric approaches with agile methods to produce methods that are more optimized for the highly data-centric, variable nature of AI projects.

Other project management methods have been tested in the space such as Microsofts Team Data Science Process (TDSP) and IBMs iteration on CRISP-DM. However, many organizations have been reluctant to adopt vendor-originated methodologies and turned to vendor-neutral approaches. Regardless of the approach used, whether its CPMAI, CRISP-DM with agile enhancements, TDSP, or others, what is setting apart the successes from the failures is, as Louis Armstrong used to say, its not what you do, its the way that you do it. Perhaps as these successes see more publicity, well see a resurgence in interest in methodology to drive AI projects forward with success.

Reliance Global Group Achieves 92% Increase in Revenue for the Second Quarter of 2022 – GlobeNewswire

RELI Exchange driving agency partner channel growth

Company to host conference call today at 2:00 PM

LAKEWOOD, NJ, Aug. 15, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- via NewMediaWire Reliance Global Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: RELI; RELIW) (Reliance, we or the Company), which combines artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud-based technologies with the personalized experience of a traditional insurance agency, today provided a business update and reported financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2022.

Ezra Beyman, CEO of Reliance Global Group, commented, We are extremely pleased to report a 92% year-over-year increase in revenue for the second quarter of 2022. Our strong growth reflects the successful acquisitions of JP Kush & Associates, Medigap Health Insurance Company and Barra & Associates. Importantly, we are also experiencing solid organic growth, which illustrates the synergies of our portfolio. As an example, we recently relaunched Barra & Associates as RELI Exchange, our new business-to-business InsurTech platform and agency partner network, which builds on the artificial intelligence and data mining backbone of 5MinuteInsure.com. RELI Exchange combines the best of digital and the human element by providing agents and customers quotes from multiple carriers within minutes, while reducing back office expenses and driving operational efficiency. Due to the competitive advantages and compelling value proposition of our platform, we are aggressively adding new agency partners to RELI Exchange, as evidenced by an increase in agents of more than 30% in just three months. We are committed to achieving our goal of building RELI Exchange into the largest agency partner network in the U.S. Overall, we have built a highly scalable business model that we believe will drive significant shareholder value for years to come.

Financial results for the three months ended June 30, 2022
