An 80-year-old Indian is taking one of the toughest examinations in the world. Here’s why – Interesting Engineering

He also appeared for the Joint Entrance Examinationan assessment needed to gain admission into engineering colleges in Indiawhich s considered by many to be the toughest entrance exam in India. In 2021, more than 141,600 students took the exam, and just over 41,860 qualified for the next stage in the entrance process.

But nothing fazed Menon.

"My son, who's an advocate, was interested in Data Processing and wanted to take the exam. He asked me if I would be interested. I was down to the idea - I wanted to challenge myself and upgrade my skills. Additionally, I had the complete support of my family. Unfortunately, my son couldn't [take] the exam, but I did," Menon tellsInteresting Engineering (IE)in an interview.

Menon's home state, Kerala, currently has the highest elderly population (16.5 percent) in India, according to the National Statistical Office (NSO)s Elderly in India 2021 report. A decade from now, it will increase to 20.9 percent. Literacy levels among elderly males and females have improved over time in rural and urban areas, and Kerala has consistently remained the most literate state in India, with a 96.2 percent literacy rate.

Menon isn't alone in his pursuit. Like Menon, former solicitor Archie White decided to complete a degree in fine art at the age of 96. Today, he is believed to be Britain's oldest graduate after he completed the degree. White had retired at 92 and had a stroke six years ago. But nothing could stop him. He told ITV News that age was no barrier.

In 2018, a Forbes article stated that adult learners were the majority of degree seekers in the US. A national survey from Champlain College Online, known for its career-focused adult education, found that 60 percent of US adults aged 23 to 55 without a bachelor's degree have considered returning to school.

However, rising costs and student debts were major hindrances.

While many adults may be returning to school to open a "new chapter" in their careers or start a brand new one, other older students begin a degree in their later years to upgrade their skill set in a fast-changing world or simply to challenge themselves. For the rest, who perhaps couldn't go to college for various reasons when they were younger, getting a degree might be a "lifelong goal" that they finally have time for and are able to afford.

Menon happens to fall into the second category.

To achieve his goals, the octogenarian woke up at 5.30 am each day and studied diligently till 10 pm.

"Student life was the best part of my life. There were no responsibilities; all one had to do was study. And now that I returned to the books, it honestly makes me feel like a student," says Menon.

Menon also tells IE that he didn't have a lot of trouble recollecting the concepts. "I have a few physical difficulties, considering my age, but that's about it," he says.

Menon is right. To qualify for the entrance exam, he had to write 16 papers. He also had to appear for weekly exams on four subjects - mathematics, statistics, data processing, and English and had to score a minimum of 50 percent in all four subjects in order to qualify for the entrance examination. "I cleared them all and became qualified to write the entrance examination, which in itself comprises four papers. I've already cleared two of them [Menon was prepping for the third paper at the time of the interview]," he says.

Realizing that only a few coveted seats are on offer at IIT, Menon decided to stay away from a classroom exam prep course and opted instead for online classes.

"I do not want to be an obstacle for the thousands of youngsters who will be appearing for the exam and hog their seats. So, I decided to solely take up an online course [which will be a three-year course]," he says.

You're probably wondering how Menon learned advanced science and math at his age.

Well, he's actually no stranger to these subjects. When he was younger, Menon had completed a degree in mathematics and spent a year studying for a Masters in Statistics. Later, he completed his post-graduate studies in cryogenic engineering at Syracuse University, New York, with a NASA-sponsored scholarship. Upon receiving his degree, he returned home to spend his career working in India.

A decision he regrets even today.

"It was 1970, and we didn't really have cryogenics experts in India, and I didn't get a chance to pursue [that field]. I left [India] in the hopes of serving my country, but I missed a good opportunity to work [in the US]," he says.

Menon is unsure if he will want to work after acquiring new skills. "I just wanted to study something that I haven't earlier. Also, I believe studying at this age would be an inspiration to many, especially youngsters," he says.

And his inspiration? "My elder brother. He was an ardent student - all I've wanted to do is follow his path," says Menon.

Interestingly, Menon has not retired from his job either. "I'm currently working as a consultant at a firm," he says. Does that mean he has no plans to rest? "None," he responds. "Neither do I receive pensions nor do I get any support. I continue to pay income tax at this age - tax paid is of no benefit to me, and it makes me hurt. Nevertheless, I've not felt the need to take a rest," adds Menon.

Microsoft and ByteDance are collaborating on a big AI project, even as US-China rivalry heats up – CNBC

Flags of China and the United States are seen near a ByteDance logo in this illustration picture taken Sept. 18, 2020.

Florence Lo | Reuters

The high-stakes battle between the U.S. and China for supremacy in artificial intelligence has domestic lawmakers growing increasingly concerned over what losing out could mean for national security, the economy and American prosperity.

But as the world's two largest economies pour resources into the race for dominance in the field, there's also collaboration afoot. Indeed, some AI experts even say that cross-border cooperation is key to getting the most out of advancements in computing.

Engineers from Microsoft and China's ByteDance, the parent of TikTok, are doing their part to advance that notion. Through a project called KubeRay, they're working together on software intended to help companies more efficiently run AI apps.

At the Ray Summit this week in San Francisco, ByteDance software engineer Jiaxin Shan and Microsoft principal software engineer Ali Kanso discussed their progress with data scientists, machine learning experts and other developers interested in building large applications using open source software called Ray.

Shan and Kanso explained the technical details behind KubeRay and pitched the software as helpful in powering AI apps that run on multiple computers, or distributed computing.

"Jiaxin and I have been working for like a year on an open source project and this is the beauty of a community gathering like this," said Kanso, who has a Ph.D. in computer science. "We're not in the same company, but we meet every week, we collaborate every week."

Shan, who previously worked as a software engineer at Amazon Web Services, is based in the Seattle area, near Microsoft's headquarters, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Companies often partner and share engineering resources to contribute to open source projects, which have gained popularity in recent years and have seeded numerous startups. The Microsoft-ByteDance collaboration is notable because of the brewing rivalry between the U.S. and China with respect to AI and intellectual property, and concerns over how technological advancements could be used for surveillance and privacy intrusion.

Microsoft has been investing heavily in AI along with competitors like Amazon, Google parent Alphabet, Facebook parent Meta and Apple. Like Google once did, Microsoft maintains an AI research lab in China, helping it tap into the country's academic talent.

Meanwhile, as TikTok's usage has exploded in recent years, ByteDance has been diving into various AI open source projects. In 2020, for instance, ByteDance debuted its NeurST software tool kit for AI-powered speech translation. And last year the company debuted its CloudWeGo open source enterprise software.

The Ray Summit was organized by software startup Anyscale, whose technology is built on Ray. Anyscale, which also contributed to KubeRay, was co-founded in 2019 by a group of engineers that included Ion Stoica, a computer science professor at the University of California at Berkeley. Stoica has a long history in open source software and co-founded Databricks, a data analytics company that was valued at $38 billion in a financing round last year.

Databricks was built on top of Apache Spark, which was developed at Berkeley under Stoica's direction. Anyscale is trying to follow a similar path, and said this week that it's just raised a fresh $99 million.

Tech giants like Microsoft and Meta often use open source projects as a way to propagate their own internal technological ideas to the wider community. Doing so helps lure potential recruits and serves as way to market the companies as technology leaders to developers.

The Microsoft-ByteDance relationship has some history to it. In 2020, Microsoft sought to acquire TikTok from ByteDance at a time when then-President Donald Trump threatened to ban the social media app over unspecified security reasons. A year later, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella called the botched deal "the strangest thing" he's ever worked on.

15 Beautiful & Deep Old English Words You Need to Start Using

There are two people I credit for my love of old English words. They are my dad and an English teacher in high school.

Whenever my dad would read me and my siblings a bedtime story, hed occasionally come across a word we didnt recognise. Instead of simply telling us what the word meant, he would give us clues to its meaning.

We would race to guess the answer and whoever got it right would feel this immense sense of pride as dad would point to the winner and say Thats it!

As for my high school teacher, well, she had a real problem with the word nice. Anyone using the word nice would be severely berated.

Nice is boring, its lazy, it doesnt add anything to the reader, she would explain. I want you to think of any other word, but do not use nice!

Its funny the things you remember when you are writing.

For me, theres something about the way words add a deeper level of understanding. Its like a secret code of sorts. I feel the same way about music. Typically, you have a drum beat, a bass line, maybe a piano, a lead guitar, and vocals. Every instrument adds a layer which makes up a complete melody.

Its the same with a sentence. You have the nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and so on. But you can go even further and tweak the sentence, adding further meaning with metaphors and symbolism.

Then there are the actual words you use. This is where I remember my old English teachers words ringing in my ears because it is here that you can really add intrigue and spice.

You can elevate your text and content. You can hopefully take your reader with you into your world. Share some of your insight and hope that they are as delighted as you are.

Now that Ive explained where my love of old English words comes from it is time to share of my favourites:

Suns warmth in winter

First used in 1623 by Englishman Henry Cockerham, apricity describes the feeling of the suns warmth in winter. It derives from the Latin aprcits which means warmed by the sun.

A small man with an incorrect high opinion of himself

This is just such a delightful word, isnt it? It captures the essence of the meaning perfectly. You could say a jobsworth is a cockalorum.

Someone or something that is the centre of attention or admiration

This word has a really interesting origin. It comes from the constellation Ursa Minor, or Pole Star, which was known as a navigation guide for sailors.

Hair tangled as if by elves

Dating back as far as 1596, this word comes from the old English word aelf. It is one of my favourite old English words. It denotes a mass of matted hair supposedly tangled by elves.

Anything that wakes you up in the morning

It doesnt matter whether it is the chirruping of the birds, the trash collectors, the postman, or your alarm clock. All of these are expergefactors because they wake you in the morning.

To grope or feel about in the dark

Anyone who has watched Silence of the Lambs may remember Clarice Starling grubbling around in the dark when Buffalo Bill kills the lights. But to honest, the word grubbling doesnt have such sinister connotations.

It merely means to feel or grope in the dark for something. A little like putting your hand in your bag without looking and feeling for your car keys.

A state of pleasant tiredness

Imagine lying on a beach with the sun warming your skin and you have just received a soothing massage. You are now in a state of languor. Languor is that dreamy, sleepy, state your body feels when it has no energy. You are completely and utterly relaxed.

An obsessive need to be romantically linked with someone

This is a state of overwhelming need and lovesickness. You ache to be with a particular person. Some call it love addiction, others call it infatuation. It involves obsessively reading into the behaviour of the other person and a desperate need for reciprocal love.

A paraprosdokian is a figure of speech or a sentence where the ending is surprising or unexpected

Now, this is not another one of those old English words for a joke. This word literally means a sentence where you are expecting a particular ending but are then surprised when it finishes a different way. So the first part is usually a figure of speech and the second part is a twist on the first part.

For example:

Change is inevitable, unless you are a vending machine.

Or

On the other hand, you have different fingers.

The pleasant, earthy smell that follows rainfall particularly after a dry spell of weather

This is an old English word deriving in two parts from the English word petri meaning rocks and the Greek word ichor which means fluid from the Gods.

Situated on or relating to a river

This word comes from common English law and originates from the Latin word ripa meaning bank. Riparian water laws are pretty important. Water is seen as a public human asset, the same as sunlight and air, and as such cannot be owned. Therefore, a person has a right to use water flowing through their land no matter where it originates from.

Everlasting, unchanging, eternal

This is one of those odd-looking words that doesnt resemble its actual meaning. To me, it looks as if it should mean a temporary state of being, but the opposite is true. In fact, US marines will already know that their motto of Semper Fidelis means Always Faithful.

Therefore, this word derives from the Latin words of semper (always) and eternus (eternal).

Whispering or rustling

Susurrus or susurration comes from the Latin noun meaning a hum or a whisper. It is thought to be related to the word swarm. Nowadays susurrus can be used to describe any kind of whispering, rustling, murmuring, or humming sound.

An alignment of three or more celestial bodies

In astronomy, the word syzygy denotes a fairly straight line which can consist of any type of celestial body. For example, the word would be used when the Sun, Moon, and Mercury lie in a straight line.

Lying awake before dawn worrying

I bet you didnt know there was a word for that awful feeling of dread and panic you feel when you cant sleep and it is just getting light? Perhaps now that you know theres a word for it, you might feel better?

Im always on the hunt for interesting words. If you know of any old English words, or indeed, any unusual words that youd like to share, please do let me know.

I Never Knew My Sleep Could Be So Good Until I Tried This Supplement* – mindbodygreen

I also didn't have any issues sleeping through the night, which I saw reflected in my Oura ring sleep tracking score. Once I started taking sleep support+, the amount of time I spent in deep sleep skyrocketed from 50 minutes to up to two hours each night.* My REM sleep also enjoyed a nice little boost. These are two of the most important stages of sleep, when cells can repair, muscle and tissues can grow, and our brains can recharge. So it makes sense that after taking sleep support+, I started to wake up feeling more rested than ever, even though I was spending the same amount of time in bed.*

Two years after first trying sleep support+, I'm still taking the supplement nightly and I can track the positive impact it's had on my overall well-being. Now that I'm getting higher-quality sleep at night, I'm more refreshed and ready to go in the morning. While I used to take my time getting out of bed, I can now take on the day right away.

Those days when I need to stay up late for work or wake up early with my kids don't affect me nearly as much as they used to because even if I'm spending fewer hours asleep, the sleep I am getting is so much deeper. Grogginess is not something I deal with anymore, and the dreaded afternoon slump rarely finds its way to me.

All in all, I just feel like I can accomplish more in my days now that my energy levels are so steady and reliable.

And while I still go through stressful periods from time to time, they don't affect my rest like they used to. Instead, I can sleep right through them and wake up ready to face them with a clear mind in the morning.
