Casse Plays Chess with Spinaway-Bound Wonder Wheel – Thoroughbred Daily News

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. Though their names are similar and they have trainer Mark Casse in common, Wonder Gadot (Medaglia d'Oro) and Wonder Wheel (Into Mischief) are not related, except, possibly, in ability.

Wonder Gadot, a two-time champion and 2018 Horse of the Year in Canada, is named for the Israeli actress, Gal Gadot, who gained international attention in the 2017 film Wonder Woman. Wonder Wheel, the unbeaten filly who will run in the GI Spinaway S. Sunday, is named for the very famous 102-year-old, 150-foot Ferris wheel at Coney Island, N.Y.

Wonder Wheel has spent the summer at Saratoga prepping for the historic Spinaway, the first Grade I of the season in the U.S. for 2-year-olds. She won both her starts at Churchill Downs earlier in the summer. Casse said he never considered entering her in the GIII Schuylerville S. or the GIII Adirondack S., the Saratoga filly stakes that typically are stepping stones to the Spinaway. There will be 60 days between her starts.

That was by plan. You can't run them all, Casse said. We ran her and then she won the stake at Churchill. So, it was by design.

In her debut June 3 at 5 1/2 furlongs, Wonder Wheel came from off the pace for a 2 1/4-length victory. On July 4 in the Debutante S., she quickly seized the lead and ran away from the others to score by 6 3/4 lengths, covering the six furlongs in 1:10.26.

Casse said the performances by the D. J. Stable filly in Kentucky were not a surprise.

She showed us a lot before she even ran, he said. I thought her first two races have been impressive. And then even since coming back here she's trained tremendous. She reminds me, and you don't have them come around that often, of the Wonder Gadots, the Classic Empires (Pioneerof the Nile), the War of Wills (War Front).

That is a serious statement from a Hall of Fame trainer, comparing Wonder Wheel to three of his recent stars. Wonder Gadot and Classic Empire were champions and War of Will was the rare winner of Grade I races on dirt and turf: the Preakness S. and the Maker's Mark Mile S.

Yeah, I know, Casse said, and I worry about that a little bit, saying that with only two starts. But that's what she's shown me.

Wonder Wheel was on a short list of prospects developed by a bloodstock advisor for Casse at the Keeneland September 2021 yearling sale.

Then I go around and pick and one of the things that intrigued me about her was she reminds me of [MSW & GISP] Make Mischief, and that was by Into Mischief, Casse said. They had this similar build and similar look. That was one of the things and I was like, 'Yeah, I like this filly.' So we bought her. Obviously, she is expensive at $275,000, but not for an Into Mischief.

Make Mischief, a New York-bred, was a seven-time winner, who had five graded stakes placings.

Casse's latest potential star training at the Spa | Sarah Andrew

Wonder Wheel has worked five times at Saratoga. She turned in a bullet five-furlongbest of 34breeze in :59.40 on Aug. 19 and got a half-mile in :48.87 on Aug. 26.

Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez will be up for the Spinaway, replacing Tyler Gaffalione, who will be riding at Kentucky Downs.

Casse said he has not second-guessed his decision to give Wonder Wheel a long stretch between races.

I'm going to be nervous, he said, because when you think you have a good one, you get nervous.

Six years ago, Casse used a similar approach with Classic Empire, who broke his maiden May 4, won the GIII Bashford Manor S. July 2 and began his fall campaign in the GI Hopeful S. Sept. 5.

Of course, it didn't work so well with Classic Empire because he made a right-hand turn coming out in the Hopeful, Casse said, smiling, but I purposely gave her some time.

Classic Empire, the 8-5 favorite, wheeled at the start and dropped Irad Ortiz, Jr. He went on to win the GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity and the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile and was voted the 2-year-old male champion.

My plan is if all things go well, she goes there, she goes to the [GI] Alcibiades and she goes to the Breeders' Cup, Casse said. That would be five starts and that's plenty. I'm a chess player.

Google sued over access to millions of NHS blood tests – The Telegraph

A Google-owned artificial intelligence company may have gained access to NHS blood test results without patients knowledge, according to a High Court lawsuit over 1.6m peoples health records.

DeepMind, which was bought by Google in 2014, may have been handed the results of blood tests that were processed by the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust laboratories according to legal filings seen by The Telegraph.

Google DeepMind says the case is without merit and has pledged to fight it in court.

The claim about blood tests was made as part of a larger case brought against Google DeepMind by Andrew Prismall, a former Royal Free patient.

His claim questions whether blood test results were also given to Google DeepMind, and allege that the US-owned business failed satisfactorily to respond to his lawyers requests for clarification.

Between 2015 and 2019 Google DeepMind was handed 1.6m peoples medical records by the Royal Free. These were used to train artificial intelligence algorithms powering a mobile app called Streams.

NHS administrators from the Royal Free signed a data sharing agreement with Google DeepMind which was supposed to make the records transfer lawful. In 2017 the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) ruled that the NHS trust had broken the Data Protection Act.

Elizabeth Denham, the then Information Commissioner, said the Royal Free failed to show it was necessary and proportionate to process 1.6m partial patient records just to test the Streams app. The NHS trust gave legally binding undertakings to the ICO as a result.

Mr Prismall, who is supported by City law firm Mishcon de Reya, first filed his class action-style against Google DeepMind last year. He withdrew it after a Supreme Court ruling in another case involving Google last year set a precedent making it impossible to continue.

Re-filed in May under different laws, the representative action seeks damages for all of the 1.6m people whose records were transferred to the artificial intelligence healthcare company.

A Google DeepMind spokesman said: "This claim is without merit and should the claimants pursue it further, we will contest it in the courts.

Streams was intended to help detect early signs of acute kidney injury (AKI), a condition the NHS says is linked to 100,000 hospital deaths per year. A 2009 study found that a third of those deaths could have been prevented with the right care and treatment.

The case is being financed by Litigation Capital Management Ltd, a commercial funding agency. Many recent class action-style cases in British courts have been brought with the backing of these for-profit companies, leading to speculation about the motives behind these cases.

James Hartley, law firm Freeths head of dispute resolution, said the cost of running a data breach lawsuit could be anything between 15 and 30 million [pounds], sometimes more.

Which sounds ridiculous, added Mr Hartley, who helped represent the Post Office scandal victims in their fight for compensation, but that is the scale of these things.

Phil Booth, coordinator of campaign group MedConfidential which helped bring the data sharing to light, said: "It's perfectly possible to carry out open, ethical, responsible science and health research that has real benefits such as when Deepmind partnered with Moorfields Eye Hospital and discovered that AI can detect signs of general health problems purely from eye scans.

What Big Tech needs to learn is that there are consequences when it puts together secret backroom deals like this one, that breach trust when they take medical data without permission from real peoples lives.

100 Times More Productive Than Traditional Agriculture? Inside the Mind of Smart Farms – Greenhouse Grower

Food security is a global challenge and its only getting more critical, says Irving Fain, founder and CEO of Bowery Farming, the vertical farming company using hydroponics and digital agriculture to reimagine the future of produce. The problem were solving at Bowery is a problem thats not only relevant to the cities were in today or to cities in the U.S., but its relevant to cities around the world.

On a recent airing of the Most Innovative Companies Podcast, Fain explains how Bowery is seeking to reinvent and reimagine food and agriculture, reflecting on confirmation bias and his status as an outsider in agriculture, while also detailing how hes been able to retain critical focus on the bigger problem at handand why now is the time to innovate.

Irving is convinced that technology can secure the future of food, and that what Bowery is building will be a critical part of the agricultural and food supply chain. As he explains, you can grow almost anything hydroponicallyits just a matter of determining which crops make sense, financially and otherwise.

To that end, focus is critical with respect to innovation, says Fain. Scalable vertical farming is a notoriously hard problem to solve (many believe it impossible), which is why he started by growing only lettuce, using it as a prototype, before growing fruit like strawberries, and other smart produce: Just because we knew ultimately wed be able to grow so much more than just greens didnt mean that that was the right place to start.

It is through this initial focus, Fain explains, that Bowery has been able to build smart farms (or Bowerys, as he calls them) that operate 365 days a year, independent of climate events, and are 100 times more productive than traditional agriculture. Wherever food is needed we can grow it, he says.

Though one could argue entrepreneurship is second nature to him, Fain had to learn farming, a fact which he believes allows him to see opportunities others might miss.

Ignorance and navet can be an advantage for an entrepreneur, and its something that you can use to your benefit if youre thoughtful about it, Fain says. When youre too deep into an industry or too deep into a problem, its very easy to start to see all the reasons why new solutions cant work or wont work, or havent worked in the past.

I Read Robert Greene’s Best-Selling Books And This Is Why I Recommend Them To Every Woman In My Life – Evie Magazine

The popular author uses lessons from history and the experiences of famous figures to discuss a variety of successful strategies, power dynamics, and self-development for readers to apply to their own life.

You might be thinking that all of this sounds very intense and that a high-level politician or businessman would be a better fit for his work, not us everyday gals. However, after having read three of Robert Greene's books, I am convinced that women especially can benefit from his writing.

Our modern world is becoming more complex, changing at a rapid pace, and becoming more competitive and cutthroat on a daily basis. All this can make life incredibly confusing and difficult for women as society teaches us the fundamentals of life but doesnt provide us with the tools and social strategies to succeed and even protect ourselves in this ever-changing world.

The core of Greene's work is understanding power dynamics, which lay at the heart of social situations, relationships, and everyday life. Greene believes that everyone has access to power, even those who aren't politicians or business people. He says within every human being is a yearning to grow and improve as an individual.

According to Greene, all humans, whether they be men or women, must have some measure of control over their lives because were hardwired to want to grow and outperform our limits. In the end, we must hone our abilities and gain "power" in order to achieve whats most important to us. Power has the potential to have a greater impact and sense of self-direction on our lives and the events that revolve around us.

The more skilled you grow at wielding power, the more you will improve as a person.

Robert Greene says the more skilled you grow at wielding power, the more you will improve as a person and also develop the ability to have meaningful relationships. Ultimately, he says you can resolve disputes and establish more emotionally secure and balanced relationships by being aware of common power dynamics, which he explains in his best-selling book The 48 Laws of Power.

Ultimately, this book is an instruction manual for the various skills required to understand power dynamics. Greene presents 48 maxims for strategies to succeed in society, work, and other aspects of daily life in this book, with many of these laws based on his own life experiences. He gives examples of how each rule has been applied in the past, as well as examples of those who have disobeyed the rules.

This all may sound very manipulative at first, but Greene revealed in a recent interview with psychologist Jordan Peterson that he was not inspired to write The 48 Laws of Power for the purpose of trickery or manipulation, but rather for the sake of power ideals founded on logic and common sense, which can aid individuals in defending themselves against those who might try to take advantage of or manipulate them.

In his books, Robert Greene tries to make his readers understand that all humans have a dark side, which means that we all have negative emotions like envy, self-absorption, and the ability to harm others. But this doesnt mean that we, as humans, are inherently bad; it simply means that we should be aware of our dark side as rational, self-aware human beings.

In his book The Laws of Human Nature, Greene makes the case that were not always in control of our own behavior and are susceptible to forces that operate below our level of consciousness and come from deep within us. We can observe the outcomes, such as our thoughts, moods, and behaviors, but we rarely have conscious influence that genuinely affects our emotions and drives our behavior.

By mastering our emotions, we can improve our mental clarity and our ability to effect positive change.

Ultimately, he says we can become aware of our darkest emotions if we can step outside ourselves and recognize our flaws. For example, there may be instances where we feel compelled to behave in anger or rage, causing harm to others. He says that when we are angry, we dont analyze or act rationally; instead, we simply ride the feeling, and sometimes even blame others for our behavior.

Greene argues that if were honest and take the time to delve a little deeper, we will realize that the core reasons for many of our negative emotions, such as anger, fury, and frustration, are actually far deeper. He contends that if were conscious of these flaws in ourselves, we can change and break these destructive patterns. He further argues that by mastering our emotions, we can improve our mental clarity, self-awareness, and the ability to make positive changes in our lives and to the people around us.

Robert Greenes books are unconventional, unique, and most importantly, incredibly refreshing. His books dwell on uncomfortable truths about human nature, society, and the harsh realities of life, which so many of us are shielded from in our politically correct world. His work is carved out of historical texts and ancient wisdom, founded on truth, reason, and virtue, and for this reason, his books will without a doubt benefit women who appreciate these values.

Filings buzz in the tech sector: 29% increase in cloud computing mentions since Q2 of 2021 – Verdict

Mentions of cloud computing within the filings of companies in the tech sector were 29% higher in the second quarter of 2022 than in Q2 of 2021.

In total, the frequency of sentences related to cloud computing between July 2021 and June 2022 was 64% higher than in 2016 when GlobalData, from whom our data for this article is taken, first began to track the key issues referred to in company filings.

When tech companies publish annual and quarterly reports, ESG reports and other filings, GlobalData analyses the text and identifies individual sentences that relate to disruptive forces facing companies in the coming years. Cloud computing is one of these topics - companies that excel and invest in these areas are thought to be better prepared for the future business landscape and better equipped to survive unforeseen challenges.

To assess whether cloud computing is featuring more in the summaries and strategies of tech companies, two measures were calculated. Firstly, we looked at the percentage of companies which have mentioned cloud computing at least once in filings during the past twelve months - this was 86% compared to 73% in 2016. Secondly, we calculated the percentage of total analysed sentences that referred to cloud computing.

Of the 10 biggest employers in the tech sector, IBM was the company which referred to cloud computing the most between July 2021 and June 2022. GlobalData identified 565 cloud-related sentences in the United States-based company's filings - 6.7% of all sentences. Accenture mentioned cloud computing the second most - the issue was referred to in 2.3% of sentences in the company's filings. Other top employers with high cloud mentions included Capgemini, Wipro and Infosys.

Across all tech companies the filing published in the second quarter of 2022 which exhibited the greatest focus on cloud computing came from Oracle. Of the document's 1,675 sentences, 185 (11%) referred to cloud computing.

This analysis provides an approximate indication of which companies are focusing on cloud computing and how important the issue is considered within the tech sector, but it also has limitations and should be interpreted carefully. For example, a company mentioning cloud computing more regularly is not necessarily proof that they are utilising new techniques or prioritising the issue, nor does it indicate whether the company's ventures into cloud computing have been successes or failures.

GlobalData also categorises cloud computing mentions by a series of subthemes. Of these subthemes, the most commonly referred to topic in the second quarter of 2022 was 'software as a service', which made up 87% of all cloud subtheme mentions by tech companies.

HIDOE, UH and Amazon Web Services announce new collaboration to increase access to cloud computing education – Hawaii DOE

The Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE), University of Hawaii System (UH) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced a new collaborative effort to train, upskill and certify students in cloud computing skills over the next three years to create pathways to technical jobs. This initiative will provide access to cloud computing education courses that align with certifications through high schools and higher education.

As nonprofits, large enterprises and public sector agencies increasingly rely on cloud computing technology to meet their organizational goals, skilled technical talent continues to be in high demand nationally and in Hawaii. According to the labor market data company Emsi, there were over 9,600 unique job postings requiring cloud computing skills in Hawaii between Aug. 2021and July 2022.

"The cloud has become the predominant method to rapidly deploy new information systems and services, UH President David Lassner said. "We are delighted to enter into this new statewide commitment with AWS, one of the leading cloud service providers in the world, and the Hawaii Department of Education, to plan how we will work together to provide real-world AWS skills and certifications to Hawaii residents and students at all levels across the islands."

Through this initiative, organizations in Hawaii will work with the AWS Academy program to provide educational institutions with no-cost, ready-to-teach, cloud computing curriculum that prepares students for industry-recognized AWS Certifications and in-demand cloud jobs.

Educators at participating institutions will have access to instructor training. Students can also access self-paced online training courses and labs from AWS. This collaborative effort aims to establish a workforce talent pipeline from high school through higher education, with a short-term goal of training and certifying 150 learners by 2025.

This is an exciting time as we align K-12 education and higher education with workforce development and emerging sectors in Hawaii such as IT and cloud computing to ensure our students are the top candidates for high-skill, high-wage, in-demand, and future-focused jobs, HIDOE Superintendent Keith Hayashi said. We look forward to working together to strengthen our shared commitment in preparing our future leaders for Hawaiis workforce needs.

The initial AWS education programs will be piloted at Aiea and Pearl City high schools and this effort is designed to help prepare students for internships, apprenticeships and pathways to additional cloud skills training.

The future of work is being shaped by evolving technology where roles in software development, data science, cybersecurity, machine learning and more often require cloud computing skills, said Kim Majerus, Vice President, US Education, State and Local Government at AWS. As we try to imagine future jobs that dont currently exist, cloud computing technology will be a driving force in creating those new exciting careers. AWS is proud to collaborate with policy, education, and government leaders in Hawaii to prepare learners for in-demand careers today, and help individuals build the foundational skills to pursue the jobs of tomorrow.

HIDOE Superintendent Keith Hayashi, UH President David Lassner, and Mark Ronaldson, Sales Leader, State and Local Government at AWS made the collaboration official during a ceremonial signing at Pearl City High School.

It gives us a step up above other students and other people going into the workforce, said Pearl City High School seniorXander Engelman. Giving out those certificates allows us to get those jobs and internships that we all want and need.

Providing workforce development opportunities for our students will allow them to enter competitive career pathways and live right here at home if they want to, added state Sen. Bennette E. Misalucha, who has been advocating for this collaboration to provide access to AWS education programs. I want to thank our state education leaders for their commitment to training the next generation in fields that are growing in demand like cloud computing.
