3 Thematic ETFs for Investors to Bet on in Q4 – ETF Trends

On Monday, the S&P 500 Index notched a new closing low for 2022, presenting an attractive entry point for long-term investors.

Advisors can enhance a portfolio with an allocation to a thematic ETF focused on innovations within the technology sector. The pandemic has unveiled how technology can reimagine companies operations, with many people continuing to work from home, using technology in different ways, according to Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi.

Thematic ETFs provide more targeted exposure than sector ETFs to potentially fast-growing long-term trends that have been accelerated since the initial emergence of COVID-19, Rosenbluth said.

DTEC is the least expensive on the list, charging just 50 basis points for its unique methodology. The fund has $115 million in assets under management.

The fund covers 10 different themes within the tech sector: healthcare innovation, the internet of things, clean energy and smart grid, cloud computing, data and analytics, fintech, robotics and AI, cybersecurity, 3D printing, and mobile payments, all with a focus on disruptive technologies and innovation.

DTEC selects 10 companies from each theme according to a proprietary model and equally weights each security, effectively giving each theme and each company equal representation. This methodology results in much more balanced exposure to the sector, which is notorious for being extremely concentrated in just a few mega-cap names.

Incepted in 2011, SKYY was the first ETF to offer exposure to the cloud computing industry, a narrow segment of the technology sector that involves a fast-growing application. SKYY has garnered $3 billion in assets under management and charges 60 basis points.

SKYY is one of the most targeted sector funds on the market, making it a tool for fine-tuning portfolio exposure. This ETF can be useful for making short-term tactical plays, but it could also have appeal as a minor complementary holding in a longer-term buy-and-hold portfolio.

In addition to investments in smaller, pure-play cloud computing companies, SKYY makes allocations to larger firms that are involved in the cloud computing space but derive the majority of their revenues from other operations. This feature may diminish the relationship between the growth of the cloud computing space and the performance of the cloud computing ETF.

BOTZ, which has $1.2 billion in assets under management, invests in an index of companies that stand to benefit from the increased adoption of automation, robotics, and artificial intelligence.

Part of the Global X suite of niche thematic ETFs, BOTZs top holdings includes Keyence Corp, ABB Ltd, and Fanuc Corporation. At 68 basis points, the BOTZ management fee is high for passive funds, but niche products arent designed to be core portfolio products for set-it-and-forget-it investors. Micro-sector funds are geared for medium-term tactical wagers of weeks or months, according to VettaFi.

SVG Sit-Down: NVIDIA’s Jamie Allan on the Transition to ST 2110, What’s Next for AI, AR, and the Cloud – Sports Video Group

The focus is migration from client-based system to software-defined virtualized infrastructure

At the IBC Show in Amsterdam this month, NVIDIAs tech infrastructure once again powered hundreds of booths. In addition, the company demonstrated SMPTE ST 2110 workflows at the Dell Technologies and RED Digital Cinema booths.

The next-generation IP broadcast workflow at the Dell booth focused on how to simplify the adoption of SMPTE ST 2110 standards for the broadcast industry. NVIDIA and Dell teamed up to showcase IP-based content-creation capabilities and deployment of AI in the broadcast pipeline from workstation to the edge.

At the RED booth, NVIDIA networking technologies (Rivermax, ConnectX, NVIDIA BlueField DPU, NVIDIA RTX GPU) enabled real-time 8K raw video over ST 2110. In this demo, NVIDIA and RED showcased a direct connection that allows cinema-quality RED V-RAPTOR 8K content to feed into an IP broadcast-production workflow.

During the show, SVG sat down with Jamie Allan, lead, media, entertainment & broadcast industry, EMEA, NVIDIA, to discuss the ST 2110 demos and how NVIDIA is helping power major next-gen technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), augmented reality and immersive experiences, and cloud- and edge-based workflows.

NVIDIAs Jamie Allan: The broadcast industry should build in a way that allows [deployment] on any platform in the future.

This year at IBC, we are focused on talking about and demonstrating some of our groundbreaking solutions that simplify the adoption of ST 2110 workflows for broadcasters, postproduction companies, and large media organizations. These [solutions] enable these organizations to easily bring SMPTE ST 2110-compliant uncompressed streams into their infrastructure without a huge engineering uplift.

Can you provide some detail on the key demonstrations youre participating in here at the show?At the Dell booth, we are showing how our existing Rivermax SDK which is already used by many leading broadcast organizations, such as Grass Valley and Disguise can create a new Windows application that provides a virtual display for a 2110 platform. You can take your normal Windows virtual or physical workstation and virtualize a SMPTE ST 2110-compliant desktop as a second display. You can simply drag an application to your second display and send that out to broadcast live on-air as a 2110-compliant stream.

On the RED Digital Cinema booth, we are enabling the worlds first real-time camera-to-SRT stream via uncompressed ST 2110. Weve worked with RED to develop the capability to go straight from one of their new camera models, fire an IP module into a processing unit doing uncompressed 8K 2110, and take that stream into either an uncompressed pipeline or an SRT compressed webstream at full 8K. We believe this is the first time that has ever been done.

How do you see AI and ML changing the way live sports are produced? And what role is NVIDIA playing in that evolution?The broadcast industry as a whole has adopted AI on a much larger scale, and weve seen many broadcasters using these tools over the past few years.

Organizations like EVS, Sony Hawkeye, and Vizrt are advancing their tools with AI. And many broadcast organizations and media companies are investing internally in AI data-science teams and developer teams to take some off-the-shelf AI tools that you can get from places like NVIDIAs GPU container cloud and retrain and adapt them to create specific tools for their needs.

That is very important in the sports industry because of the complexity and the unique needs of each individual sport. We work very closely with organizations like Hawkeye to enable their tools to work specifically for certain sports.

I also think AI and machine learning in automated production is very interesting. We are seeing organizations like Pixellot and Mediapros AutomaticTV growing at an astonishing rate. We will continue to work with these companies to create smaller and faster components for that part of the ecosystem so that technology can continue to grow.

There are also many startups focusing on creating groundbreaking applications for AI in sports broadcasting. One company in particular doing groundbreaking work in markerless motion tracking is move.AI. They are a UK-based company who have [drawn interest] from many major sporting bodies and broadcasters around the world. Using low-cost cameras, they can create full-body 3D visualizations, which is something every broadcaster wants in order to add value not only to their current 2D broadcast pipeline but also to their future immersive metaverse and Web3 broadcasting capabilities.

Speaking of the metaverse, how have you seen the use of augmented reality grow in recent years? How to you envision these virtual technologies impacting the industry?Were incredibly proud that nearly every vendor who creates augmented-reality and virtual-graphics tools leverages NVIDIA technology to build their products. We continue to push our engineers and our internal product teams to give them more and more capability in that space. The next step that we are hoping to see is bridging the gap between AR in the studio and AR in the home. Weve seen visionary pieces from amazing partners like BT Sport, who have done a huge amount of work with 5G Edge XR, which has been a big hit here at IBC.

In addition, companies like Brainstorm, Disguise, Vizrt, and Zero Density are striving towards this multi-layerrendering capability, where it should be easy to extrapolate an AR element and have it delivered by a different device than just your TV. Thats when we can start to talk about this multi-experience broadcast way of consuming content.

The vision of having a football match played out on your table from a top-down view is nearing reality. We want to see these technology companies getting there soon because the consumers are asking for it. There are certainly barriers to overcome on the scale of the computing power today and the limitations of traditional content-delivery networks. The next generation of augmented reality and high-fidelity visualization will need more edge computing to deliver those experiences. We hope to partner with the industry to leverage infrastructure that NVIDIA and our data-center partners have today to deliver those experiences to the consumer.

How has NVIDIA factored into the cloud-based revolution in the broadcast industry? How will this shift toward the edge and the cloud play out over the coming decade?The media industry has certainly been a huge adopter of cloud computing over the last decade, but I think many were primarily focused on reducing their capital expenditure. I think people are finally realizing the advantages of cloud-native computing. The industry is moving towards a software-defined broadcast ecosystem where every ISV or vendor or tool that you want to use can be run anywhere you want on whichever hardware platform you choose all with an enterprise IT management layer. Being able to build out those infrastructures from edge to private to public cloud is our goal in how we build out our technology.

When NVIDIA builds its core capabilities around containerization and virtualization of GPU and networking, we make them in a way that they can run anywhere. When our ISV or hardware partners want to deploy that tool at the edge, they know that they can trust that NVIDIAs drivers and virtualization technologies will work better. When they want to run those things in public cloud at massive scale, they know that the same core NVIDIA technologies that they use at the edge will run at scale in the cloud. We never want to create our core foundations in a way that lock you into deploying a certain place or a certain way. And thats how we believe the approach should be for the broadcast industry: build in a way that allows you to deploy on any platform in the future. This migration from a client-based system to software-defined virtualized infrastructure allows you to be a much more agile and flexible technology company.

There has been a lot of discourse this weekend about refocusing on technology within the broadcast industry. Then it uses the iterative relocation technique to improve the partitioning by moving objects from one group to other.

This method creates a hierarchical decomposition of the given set of data objects. We can classify hierarchical methods on the basis of how the hierarchical decomposition is formed. There are two approaches here

This approach is also known as the bottom-up approach. In this, we start with each object forming a separate group. It keeps on merging the objects or groups that are close to one another. It keep on doing so until all of the groups are merged into one or until the termination condition holds.

This approach is also known as the top-down approach. In this, we start with all of the objects in the same cluster. In the continuous iteration, a cluster is split up into smaller clusters. It is down until each object in one cluster or the termination condition holds. This method is rigid, i.e., once a merging or splitting is done, it can never be undone.

Here are the two approaches that are used to improve the quality of hierarchical clustering

Perform careful analysis of object linkages at each hierarchical partitioning.

Integrate hierarchical agglomeration by first using a hierarchical agglomerative algorithm to group objects into micro-clusters, and then performing macro-clustering on the micro-clusters.

This method is based on the notion of density. The basic idea is to continue growing the given cluster as long as the density in the neighborhood exceeds some threshold, i.e., for each data point within a given cluster, the radius of a given cluster has to contain at least a minimum number of points.

In this, the objects together form a grid. The object space is quantized into finite number of cells that form a grid structure.

Advantages

In this method, a model is hypothesized for each cluster to find the best fit of data for a given model. This method locates the clusters by clustering the density function. It reflects spatial distribution of the data points.

This method also provides a way to automatically determine the number of clusters based on standard statistics, taking outlier or noise into account. It therefore yields robust clustering methods.

In this method, the clustering is performed by the incorporation of user or application-oriented constraints. A constraint refers to the user expectation or the properties of desired clustering results. Constraints provide us with an interactive way of communication with the clustering process. Constraints can be specified by the user or the application requirement.

Chinas near total access to Americans personal data poses a clear and present national security risk

Could the CCP virus and its impact on Western economies and societies have actually been planned to facilitate Chinas ongoing bid to rule the world through the capture and manipulation of billions of peoples individual data?

If that sounds like an exaggeration, thats understandable.

Unfortunately, to deny the reality of whats truly going on is wishful thinking. The reality is that the Chinese regimes data theft operations have put U.S. national security and position of global leadership at risk.

To accomplish such a feat, China has been incredibly forward-looking in its data theft operations, which it has been perpetrating against its trading partners for decades. Americans remain their top target, and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has been successful in its efforts.

It is estimated that 80 percent of American adults have had all of their personal data stolen by the CCP, and the other 20 percent most of their personal data, saidBill Evanina, former director of theU.S. National Counterintelligence and Security Center.

That data would potentially include financial information, medical records, political preferences, buying habits, passwords to various accounts, and much more. Let that sink in for a moment.

It should put the last three years in a new and quite disturbing lightor darkness, if you will.

When one accounts for how much the world has changedand continues to changein the wake of the CCP virus and the COVID-19 pandemic, its impossible to ignore just how much Beijing has leveraged those events to its strategic advantage.

Since the very beginning, its apparent that Beijing has been accessing and harvesting personal data by processing COVID tests in a Google-like fashionon a global scale.

As I mentioned in a previous post, China is the main source of viral tests and analysis. Its offer to provide testing labs and facilities seems to have been nothing less than a massive operation to gather Americans data in order to mine it and gain strategically important information on as many of us as possible.

In a 60 Minutes interview, Evanina said the labs were modern-day Trojan horses. Their true purpose was to help the Chinese regime gain a foothold to bring in equipment, collect DNA, and start mining your data.

Thats quite a statement. In essence, no such testing equipment and subsequent data mining would be possible on such a scale without a pandemic to justify it.

But, of course, the CCPs data theft efforts didnt begin or end with harvesting data from COVID tests. The regime has been using networking equipment and social media technology to spy and steal data for decades. Huawei and TikTok are just two of many examples of that practice. The net result is a tremendous strategic advantage for China. The CCP knows much more about Americans and the United Stateswhich the CCP considers its adversary in every sense of the wordthan Americans know about the Chinese.

Again, this isnt hyperbole. Its not just personal data but critical technological information that China is capturing at an unprecedented rate. The U.S. National Counterintelligence fears that China is vacuuming up data about the U.S. and its citizens not just to steal secrets from U.S. companies or to influence citizens but also to build the foundation of technological hegemony in the not-too-distant future.

But the CCP isnt just capturing massive amounts of data on and from Western nations, which is bad enough. With no legal, moral, or ethical restraints, Beijing has likely weaponized artificial intelligence (AI) to gain strategic advantages from its data theft operations.

According to Stephen Yates, chief executive of consultancy firm DC International Advisory, with regard to the CCPs abuse of the rest of the worlds data, China has weaponized artificial intelligence and a lot of other studies of the human process in ways that civilized countries wouldnt even allow, so we dont have any way to really know what this dark window of the future might be.

As noted in my Dec. 21, 2021,post, Just as AI and genomics enable DNA manipulation to help the human body fight all kinds of diseases, this same technology can also be used to create unique pathogens that only impact specific people. DNA-specific weapons can target a race, a gender, or even a family or individual with a specific DNA structure. This isnt just a possibilityits a probability, if not already a reality.

In recent months, some national security authorities have also warned of the increasing likelihood of just such a reality coming to the fore. They point to the escalation by the CCP in its efforts to capture and control every bit of data that enters the country, no matter the source. The CCP is deadly serious in those efforts, particularly regarding data from American and other Western firms that have a presence in China.

Thinking otherwise is simply not justified. The CCPs pandemic behavior showed the world just what kind of inhumanity its capable of in incontrovertible terms.
