The Power of Hands-On Data Science | CSUF News – CSUF News

Computer science major James Owens II wanted to learn more about data science and how to use machine learning and data visualization to solve real-world problems.

Using data science tools, Owens studied the role of hippocampus, a complex brain structure embedded deep into the temporal lobe that plays a major role in learning and memory. This research is important so data scientists can intrinsically understand the brain, specifically how hippocampus aids in organizing memories.

With the information we obtained from our research, we seek to fully understand how the human brain can remember how, when and where events happened, he said. Once we fully understand how the parts of the brain organize memories, we can hopefully find a solution to illnesses such as Alzheimers disease or dementia in the long-term.

As a fellow in the SoCal Data Science Program, a collaboration between Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine and Cypress College launched earlier this year, Owens had the opportunity to learn all about this interdisciplinary, data-focused field through hands-on research.

Owens worked on the project with CSUF research adviser Sam Behseta, professor of mathematics, and UC Irvine researchers to develop statistical models to understand underlying neural mechanisms of memory.

Behseta, director of CSUFs Center for Computational and Applied Mathematics and the universitys 2022 Outstanding Professor, and Jessica Jaynes, associate professor of mathematics, are leading the CSUF effort and mentoring students selected for the program.

Funded by a $1.5 million National Science Foundation grant, the SoCal Data Science Program aims to recruit, train and dispatch a diverse workforce of STEM and data science majors.

Through this collaborative effort, we are providing opportunities for underrepresented students in data science early on in their academic career, Behseta said. Were equipping undergraduate students with the required skills to solve real-life problems by creating hands-on research and practical projects.

The program also is preparing students for a successful career path through mentoring and direct engagement with academic and non-academic institutions.

It is our passion to provide opportunities for our students to learn the necessary skills for the workforce, Jaynes said. As the amount of data produced continues to increase exponentially, so does the demand for a skilled workforce trained with the necessary skills to understand scientific questions related to data, data management, data visualization and summarization, and the ability to communicate with data.

This first class of 31 fellows from the three institutions, including 20 fellows from CSUF is diverse, with the majority from underrepresented backgrounds, including Hispanic, Black, Filipino and Vietnamese ethnicities.

Program fellows were selected from over 200 applicants, with half of the applicants from CSUF. The goal is to recruit a total of 120 students over the three-year program.

Owens noted that its important to train diverse data scientists who are from varied backgrounds and disciplines: Diversity promotes new and better innovations and different perspectives from around the world.

The fellows participate in winter and spring coursework related to data science. The CSUF students, who are biological science, chemistry, computer science and mathematics majors, also enroll in the pilot course, Foundations of Data Science, taught by both Jaynes and Behseta.

In this course, students learn critical skills for data analysis and problem-solving, noted Jaynes.

In the summer, students attended a one-week bootcamp and participated in a six-week data science research project, led by faculty from each of the institutions.

Students worked alongside data science researchers and industry partners, such as Childrens Health of Orange County-CHOC, on six different research projects to address real issues in daily life.

In addition to Owens project, other research included the effects of COVID-19 in pediatric patients with cystic fibrosis, how diet affects cancer within the blood and bone marrow and the negative impact of smartphones on infant language development.

The program culminated with a research symposium in August at UCI, where fellows presented their projects through short talks and poster presentations to more than 100 attendees.

The ultimate highlight of the program was watching the students share all of their hard work with their families and friends at the research symposium, Jaynes said.

Owens, who is considering a career as a data scientist, was introduced to statistical modeling techniques, brushed up on communication, analysis and research presentation skills, and found a like-minded community of peers.

What fascinated me about data science is that I can use my computer science skills to solve real-world problems by using different algorithms and problem-solving techniques that Ive learned, he said.

Behseta and Jaynes plan to build on this years successes and continue developing and expanding the curriculum to create a community of data science learners.

Dr. Liu and Dr. Suchow appointed as Presidential Fellows The Stute – The Stute

At Stevens, one of the most prestigious honors a young professor can achieve is to be a Presidential Fellow. A Presidential Fellow recognizes a staff member at Stevens and the achievements of their research and potential contributions to the institution in the future. This year, President Farvardin and Provost Qu announced that Dr. Hang Liu, Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering and Science, and Dr. Jordan Suchow, Assistant Professor in the School of Business, were appointed as Presidential Fellows.

Dr. Liu earned a B.E. in Software Engineering from Huazhong University of Science & Technology in 2011 and went on to his Ph.D. from George Washington University in High-Performance Computing in 2017. He started at Stevens in 2019, and his work focuses primarily on data science, machine learning, and cybersecurity. In his time here at Stevens, Dr. Liu has received three National Science Foundation (NSF) Awards totaling over $1.1 million, including the NSF CAREER award. Recently, he won the IEEE Computer Society Technical Community on High-Performance Computing (IEEE CS TCHPC) Early Career Researchers Award for Excellence in High-Performance Computing 2022. Dr. Liu also won the Stevens Early Career Award for Research Excellence as a 2022 recipient.

Dr. Suchow earned his B.S. in Computer Science from Brandeis University in 2009, his Ph.D. from Harvard University for Cognitive Psychology in 2014, and completed his postdoc at the University of Southern California, Berkeley. Dr. Suchow started at Stevens in 2019, leading much research in artificial intelligence due to his background in cognitive studies and computer science. His work focuses on developing computational models regarding group and individualistic thinking, learning, and decision-making. In a recent project funded by The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Dr. Suchow developed technologies that help in experimental and social science data at scaled levels. Since his time here at Stevens, he has been awarded a patent and has had articles published or accepted by 18 papers, most of which are high-impact publications.

Being a Presidential Fellow is a keystone moment in a professors career. According to Dr. Liu, It means a great recognition to my group, as well as my teaching to our students and service to the university and my community. It cheers my students upthey knew that their advisor got this award, in part, because of their hard work. Beyond being recognized for outstanding work and research, the Presidential Fellowship also offers a new perspective on the future of their work. Dr. Liu explains that winning the award means, I will have to stay closer to my inner peace such that I can think deeper and produce better research, teaching and service.

Being a Presidential Fellow is a great honor. Dr. Suchow and Dr. Liu received this recognition because of their incredible work and embodiment of Stevens. Tech pros from Microsoft, Amazon, more share career paths with students | University of Hawaii System News – University of Hawaii

More than 150 University of Hawaii at Mnoa students from a variety of majors took advantage of a rare opportunity to meet one-on-one with technology industry professionals from organizations such as Microsoft, Amazon, LinkedIn and Activision Blizzard, to learn about technology career opportunities.

The event on October 11, at Kuykendall Hall began with an introduction of more than 20 professionals, which included software engineers, company founders, business leaders and cybersecurity experts, followed by a one-hour mixer where students were able to chat face-to-face with the speakers.

The event was hosted by the Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship (PACE) in UH Mnoas Shidler College of Business, Association for Computing Machinery at UH Mnoa, ThriveHI and Builders VC.

Amanda Nitta is a UH Mnoa senior majoring in computer science and data science, and vice president and chief of operations for the Association for Computing Machinery at UH Mnoa. Nitta was one of the events student organizers and gained knowledge about how to apply data science and management in a future career.

This is a great opportunity for these students because of the fact that it gives exposure to what they are able to do, and be able to apply what they learned and see that they are not restricted to one thing such as software engineering, Nitta said. They have so many other capabilities within them to do interdisciplinary work and have different mindsets going into the workforce.

Kanai Gooding is a computer science student and president of the Association for Computing Machinery at UH Mnoa. Gooding said many of the tech professionals featured at the event are remote workers for companies based on the continental U.S. He said there is a disparity between salaries offered by those companies and salaries offered by companies based in Hawaii. Goodings goal for the event was to begin a dialogue to take steps forward so Hawaii-based companies can match the salaries of their continental U.S.-based counterparts.

This is just one of the many aspects that we are trying to attack the problem with, Gooding said. One of our big asks for the professionals here was, Hey, were going to have the students ask you your salary. Please be ok with us asking and you answering. Hopefully that spreads loudly across the community.

Kevin Shin, a senior software engineer at LinkedIn, shared his manao (thoughts and perspectives) with UH Mnoas current students. Shin graduated from UH Mnoa 2014 with a degree in mechanical engineering, before pursuing a graduate degree at Stanford University.

His goal for the event was to let the students know that there is a path to tech and people from Hawaii can make it. There are a bunch out here doing it.

Students at the University of Hawaii are just as capable of taking on tech careers, including tech-centered entrepreneurship, as their mainland counterparts. Because of Hawaiis distance from major technological hubs, however, local students may be learning about these careers from the internet or other secondhand sources, PACE Executive Director Sandra Fujiyama said. PACE, along with ThriveHI, ACM@Mnoa and Builders VC, recognized the need to close that gap and connect students directly to people who know what it is to work in tech today.

SDSC’s Chief Data Science Officer Elected to IEEE Computer Society Board of Governors – HPCwire

Oct. 12, 2022 The Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers Computer Society (IEEE CS) recently announced that Ilkay Altinta, chief data science officer at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at UC San Diego, has been elected as an IEEE CS 2023 Board of Governors member for a three-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2023.

The IEEE CS Board is responsible for providing policy-level guidance to all the organizational entities with the society. The board sets directions and strategy for the society and reviews the performance of the program boards and other committees to assure compliance with its policy directions.

The Board of Governors sets the direction and determines the strategy for the Computer Society and provides guidance at the policy level to all of its organizational entities, said SDSC Director Frank Wrthwein. Congratulations to Ilkayit is a significant achievement to be elected to such a leadership position by ones peers.

Altinta is no stranger to leadership as she directs three successful entities at UC San Diego: SDSCs Cyberinfrastructure and Convergence Research and Education Division, Workflows for Data Science (WorDS) Center of Excellence, and the WIFIRE Lab. She is also faculty co-director for UC San Diegos Master of Advanced Study in Data Science and Engineering and a fellow with the Halcolu Data Science Institute.

The latest strategic plan of IEEE includes providing value to the whole community, which comes at a time when we have complex societal problems to solve and less than ideal workable solutions, Altinta said. IEEE Computer Society has unrealized potential to push progress forward through integration of technology and inclusion through dialogue and collaboration throughout the research and education cycle. Im excited to apply my experience in translational programs, experiential education and convergence research to foster programs toward long-term, trusted partnerships with underrepresented and cross-sector communities, and to contribute to the discussion on an inclusive approach to identify, prioritize and co-create solutions, and diversify the pipeline of students and researchers in ways that expands our impact.

Applications are invited for a permanent post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 2 within UCD School of Computer Science.

UCD is a European leader in Data Analytics and Connected Health. Nationally we host flagship collaborative programmes under Science Foundation Ireland's Research Centres programmes and Enterprise Ireland/IDA's Technology Centre programme. We work with industry partners to develop projects within these programmes and under separate funding streams from the European Commission, Enterprise Ireland, the Irish Research Council, the Health Research Board and others.

We are looking to recruit one Post-Doctoral Research Fellows to start in January 2023 on research projects, funded by Industrial Partners and the European Commission.

The projects are in the general area of Machine Learning, Data Analytics and Recommender Systems. Whether its for a technical certification, a doctorate in a given field or a degree somewhere in between, Northern Virginia boasts a wealth of opportunities for residents to become educated about the digital world.

Area institutions, including Virginia Tech and Northern Virginia Community College, offer a host of classes and educational programs to help students prepare to land one of the regions myriad technology jobs.

The local jewel in Virginia Techs technical crown is still under construction. Thats the universitys Innovation Campus, part of the states successful effort to attract Amazons HQ2. The $1 billion, 1 million-square-foot campus in Alexandria will offer graduate education in computer science and computer engineering, and Tech officials hope it will lead to the creation of an East Coast version of Californias Silicon Valley, said Lance Collins, vice president and executive director of the campus.

The Innovation Campus will offer advanced degrees in computer science and computer engineering, including masters of engineering, masters of science and doctorate degrees in each subject. At build-out, it will have about 750 masters of engineering and 200 doctoral students and award 550 masters degrees and 50 doctorates annually.

Were not talking about a boutique operation here, Collins said.

The Innovation Campus isnt scheduled to open until 2024, but some students are already taking courses at the universitys Falls Church location. Tech chose the educational programs for the campus that it did because they produce the degrees for which there is the biggest need, Collins said.

The masters of engineering degree programs are centered around projects sponsored by an external organization, such as a business, government agency or nonprofit, which will provide learning opportunities for both technical and professional skills. This setup will create the environment that students would see in their careers while providing them coaching from real-world workers. Some of the projects likely will morph into new companies, Collins said.

Working in a project world, it just brings out the best in everybody, including the students, Collins said.

Twelve Virginia Tech faculty members in computer science and computer engineering have already transferred to the Innovation Campus, and more educators are on the way. At build-out in 2028-29, the faculty should total 50 members.

We really want the campus to be a robust place, Collins said. And Tech officials have the goal of fostering the most diverse graduate technology program in the nation.

The mission of shepherding such a campus into existence is one Collins has accomplished before. He joined Virginia Tech in 2020 from Cornell University, where he was the dean of engineering for a decade and part of a team that successfully bid to partner with New York City to build Cornell Tech, which opened its Roosevelt Island campus in Manhattan in 2017.

As with the Innovation Campus, Northern Virginia Community College tries to make sure its offering the courses that businesses want prospective employees to complete, said Steve Partridge, the colleges vice president of strategy, research and workforce innovation. It does this by examining labor market data and targeting the subjects that will prepare students to qualify for not just a few open jobs but for thousands of openings.

The college also provides career advising and many other resources through a Business Engagement Center that helps students find out where the jobs are, what they pay and what future positions they lead to. To accomplish this, NOVA engages industry leaders and uses labor market intelligence data. For example, Partridge said the college is hearing a lot lately about data analytics, and that businesses are hiring not just for data center employees but for data center managers. Software development is still a growing field, as well, he said.

If a business or businesses are looking for job candidates with a specific technical certification, the college can mobilize quickly to offer short-term credentialing programs to fulfill that need. NOVA is one of the top community-college grantors of technical credentials in the country, Partridge said.

Credential programs can be launched more quickly than degree programs, he said. Those types of programs primarily aid two types of students: working adults who want to add another skill or workers who are switching careers. The college can decide whether a credential program is appropriate by asking a given business: What do you actually want this person to do? Is a degree really necessary?

Even with these efforts, some jobs continue to go unfilled, prompting Partridge to say that knowing IT is right up there with the necessary skills of writing, reading and arithmetic in the old axiom. The educator also pointed out that employees tend to be more loyal to companies that invest in them and to work longer for those businesses.

NOVA also is a national leader in granting associate degrees in technical fields, offering programs in computer science, cloud computing, cyber security, information technology and engineering technology, said Chad Knights, vice president of information and engineering technologies and college computing.

These workforce-based programs match the needs of our business community, said Knights, who oversees all technology degree programs.

As with credentials, he said the college analyzes what the regional business needs are and aims to make sure its degrees match them. For instance, the college has worked with Amazon Web Services and the Marine Corps on topics leading to degree offerings. In this way, he said, the college is responsive to both student needs and the needs of the business community.

Some faculty hail from the industry, as well, so they know about the latest trends among businesses.

To propel innovation, in November 2021, NOVA and the Virginia Tech Pamplin College of Business celebrated the newly-formed Business Information Technology-Cybersecurity Management and Analytics (BIT-Cyber) program. The partnership provides a pathway for students to earn a bachelors degree in Business Information Technology with the option to focus on Cybersecurity Management and Analytics (BIT-Cyber). This is the first Virginia Tech bachelors degree available to students outside of its Blacksburg campus.

Animation and nontraditional art forms Trinitonian – The Trinitonian

Animation club aims to bring support to a steadily growing artist demographic

Theres a new club in the works and its looking to provide resources that Trinitys campus currently lacks. Digital artists are a growing demographic in todays technology-driven society, but Trinitys campus lacks the resources for these artists. While traditional artists have access to the Dicke-Smith buildings wide array of materials paints, brushes, paper, wood and anything else a budding artists heart may desire digital artists are limited to Trinitys computers and the technology in CSI.

The up-and-coming animation club wants to fix that. Kinsey Neas, sophomore computer science major and a co-founder of the club, explained her initial frustrations with Trinitys lack of digital art resources.

When I first came to Trinity, I went to the art department and was like, Hey, what digital art resources do you have? Because digital art resources can sometimes be expensive. And I was like, before I go and try to buy stuff myself, Im gonna see if they have anything. And they just dont have any resources at all. They have nothing like digital art, animation Its all just traditional art, Neas said.

Trinitys curriculum also lacks classes for nontraditional artists, such as animation. Jack Pittman, junior computer science major and animation club co-founder, said that the club was not only looking to provide physical and digital resources, but also a space to teach nontraditional art skills and network with other nontraditional artists.

So that way people either can do it for fun, do it on the side, put in however much they want to, or potentially pursue it as a career, like what Im trying to do. That way people have options and all this variety and can use resources that Trinity has for animation, Pittman said.

The demographic of digital artists has seen exponential growth in the past decade. New technology has allowed media such as animation, 3D modeling and virtual reality to grow and change at unprecedented rates. Accordingly, the number of artists who work with these media has also increased rapidly. These artists dont work with the canvases, paints and tools that many associate with traditional art forms. Instead, they work with graphics tablets, desktops and even 3D printers to take their creations from ideas to reality.

These artists are also growing in number. Its easier than ever to gain an interest in the digital art that constantly surrounds us, but learning to create it can be challenging. Along with physical and digital resources, the animation club wants to offer workshops and classes that help new and established artists hone their skills. Pittman explained their current plans for art education are as follows:

Were looking to have students come in and be able to show them skills that Ive developed on my own because a lot of people are coming in with little to no 3D experience. Even a little bit of pointing them in the right direction is super helpful, Pittman said. I know certain professors know people who are in the industry I got to talk with. They had someone who worked at DreamWorks at one of the computer science colloquiums, and hes now a technical director for a VR-like studio. And so I got an interview with him after he talked at the colloquium.

Digital art is a field that consistently welcomes flexibility and new talent, and Trinity students with any interest in art are encouraged to check the club out.

William Abbott, junior business administration and communication double-major, has an interest in the club but no traditional art background.

I used to be an all-state singer. But thats completely different, Abbott said. I dont really have a huge physical art background. Im in Graphic Design Principles right now. So thats kind of dipping my toe into it.

Abbotts interest is in stop-motion animation, a time-consuming medium that yields beautiful results. Hes hoping that the animation club will continue to focus on these less traditional forms of art in the future.

Its such a cool field, Abbott said. Its very time-consuming, and its really difficult. But I think some of the most beautiful video you can do is animation.

MIAMI and BALTIMORE, Oct. 13, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Citadel Founder and CEO Ken Griffin today announced a $3 million donation to launch a new multi-year scholarship program to help exceptional Ukrainian students continue their science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) studies. The Ukraine Math and Science Achievement Fund, administered by the Digital Harbor Foundation in Baltimore, will provide tuition assistance and other support to help dozens of top Ukrainian students affected by the war pursue STEM studies at leading educational institutions around the world.

"Ukrainian students including some of the brightest of their generation have faced unimaginable hardship and have had their education and futures disrupted," said Ken Griffin. "The Ukraine Math and Science Achievement Fund aims to ensure that these brilliant students have the opportunity to realize their academic ambitions and leave their mark on the world."

Three of the initial Griffin Scholars hail from Lyceum 27 in Kharkiv, a city in Ukraine that has been particularly hard hit by the war. They include Ihor Pylaiev, an International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) two-time gold medalist who, with a perfect score, was this year's overall IMO winner; IMO two-time silver medalist Svyatoslav Deniskov; and IMO bronze medalist Vadym Hasseiev. Four additional Griffin Scholars Liza Horokh, Roksolana Ivanchuk, Mariia Mikhnovska, and Anton Havrilyuk studied in Ukraine's capital city of Kyiv.Like theirKharkiv peers, they have each medaled at various Olympiads, share a passion for math and problem-solving, and have endured war-related hardships.

The fund has enabled four of these outstanding students to accept offers to study at the University of Cambridge this fall; the three other members of the first cohort are attending secondary school Hills Road Sixth Form College in the City of Cambridge. Future funding rounds beginning later this year will allow additional talented Ukrainian students to pursue educational opportunities around the world and scholarships to study at universities in both Europe and the United States.

The Ukraine Math and Science Achievement Fund builds on an effort led by Dr. Ferenc Huszr, an associate professor of computer science at Cambridge; Dr. Iryna Korshunova, a machine learning researcher; and a group of volunteers who have been providing the displaced Olympiad community from Ukraine with access to financial support, laptops, and educational resources since the onset of the war. After learning about this grassroots effort, Ken Griffin was inspired to amplify this work and further support top STEM students seeking to pursue their studies and maximize their potential.

The funding enabled a group of students to train in Poland, compete in Olympiad competitions across Europe, and travel to Indonesia in August to compete in the International Olympiad in Informatics, the most prestigious computer science competition for secondary and high school students around the world.

The Ukrainian team placed first among all the European teams and sixth globally at the competition.
