You've read the articles, you've seen the reviews, and you've finally made up your mind about ditching iPhone and switching to Android. You're looking forward to exploring everything that Android has to offer and experimenting with all those fancy features fans keep talking about.

However, do note that Android comes with its own pros and cons just like the iPhone. This guide will help you know what you can realistically expect when switching to Android.

While iPhones usually start at $799, Android phones are available at every price point so you have more control over how much to spend on a new phone. Granted, there's the iPhone SE series which is more affordable, but it's dwarfed in terms of specs, features, and design when compared to similarly priced Android mid-range phones.

When switching to Android, you'll find it difficult to let go of the Apple apps you are used to enjoying on the iPhone, especially iMessage and FaceTime. Doing so is even harder if you've subscribed to Apple services like Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, Apple Music, and Apple Fitness+.

As a new Android user, you'll find it rather disappointing that although you have more freedom now, the Android ecosystem is a bit messy and scattered. That means there isn't just one place you can go to for all your technology needsa major pain for non-tech-savvy users.

One thing you'll notice immediately after switching to Android is that there are a lot more apps and features here than on iOS. This is because iPhones (and Apple products in general) prioritize simplicity and usability, whereas Android phones prioritize functionality and utility.

You'll find features on Android that you never knew you needed. In fact, manufacturers also add a custom "skin" on top of the Android OS to differentiate their products from other brands.

For example, some of the best features on Samsung phones are Edge Panels, Secure Folder, and Modes and Routines. Pixel phones boast Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, and Call Screen. You won't find them on other Android devices.

While exploring all the apps and features on your new Android phone, you'll also discover that there are sadly more bloatware apps and system ads too. This is especially true for heavier Android skins like Samsung's One UI or Xiaomi's MIUI.

To be fair, you can delete these pre-installed apps from your phone and turn off system ads, but having them there in the first place is an annoyance you wouldn't want to deal with.

One area where iPhones have not made progress in a very long time is charging speeds. While Android manufacturers today offer crazy-fast speeds like 65W, 100W, or even higher, iPhones are still stuck at under 30W. That means iPhones take around one-and-a-half to two hours to fully charge, but some Android phones can do so in just around 30 minutes!

Switching to Android makes even more sense if you own a Microsoft Windows computer. You probably already know that Apple MacBooks don't play nice with Android, and this can interrupt your workflow and slow down productivity.

Thankfully, you can easily link your Android phone and Windows PC using the Microsoft Phone Link app. With it, you can access your phone's apps and photos on your PC, share files between the two devices, read and respond to messages, make and receive calls, and receive and manage notifications.

An annoying thing about Android is that you have to manage more accounts. Aside from having a Google account, you'll also have to create a new account with the manufacturer you buy the phone from. This is necessary for backing up your data and using their Find My Device services (except if you're buying a Google Pixel phone).

This is even worse when you're buying a Galaxy phone because Samsung outsources some of its cloud storage requirements to Microsoft to back up your photos, videos, and files. That means you'll now have to have a Google account, a Samsung account, and a Microsoft account. A nightmare indeed.

Another complaint with Android is that software bugs usually take longer to get fixed than on iPhones. This is because, unlike Android which is open source, iOS is proprietary software that gives Apple complete control over the software running on iPhones. This allows the company to quickly spot bugs and roll out a patch to fix them.

Also, since Android phones come with custom skins, it's even harder to find and fix bugs as you have to figure out whether the problem is with Android itself or the skin you've put on top of it. It's also why software updates in general are slower on Android phones.

Android offers you more control over your device, and you'll notice this in multiple ways. For instance, there are more options for customization, more tools for multitasking, and more ways to manage your storage.

As a former iPhone user, you'll also appreciate the better file management on Android and the ability to run third-party launchers and to be able to force-stop apps and clear their cache.

Since Apple only releases a couple of iPhone models in a year and doesn't change the design much with each generation, companies find it easier to make accessories like cases, stands, wireless chargers, car mounts, and more for the iPhone.

In comparison, there are hundreds of Android phone models launched in a year, and so companies find it difficult to keep track of them all, let alone build accessories for them.

Just like iPhone, Android has its pros and cons. But depending on who you ask, one surpasses the other. As a new Android user, the one thing that you'll enjoy the most is that Android adapts to you and not the other way around.

You can customize and personalize your Android phone in whatever way you like so that it best fits your unique needs, style, preferences, and lifestyle. Such is harder on iPhones.

Zoe Wei, Head of Developer Relations and Marketing of BNB Chain speaks about her recent initiative BNB Greenfield which focuses on decentralized storage and the Zero2Hero hackathon in an exclusive YouTube interview with Coin Edition.

In the video, Zoe Wei can be seen speaking about BNB Greenfield and explains it as a decentralized storage infrastructure within the broader BNB chain ecosystem. She tells Coin Edition that the idea is to help users and DApp to trade, store, and exchange data with full ownership and to form a new data economy.

Wei explains that BNB Greenfield stands apart from other decentralized storage systems with its data access, programmability, full ownership, and speed. Furthermore, she highlights that BNB Greenfield is teaming up with various decentralized networks such as AWS or GOOGLE, which can still remain as an individuals primary storage provider, while BNB Greenfield acts as a secondary provider.

To help large-scale adoption, Were trying to provide a user-friendly infrastructure to develop apps that can create a user experience very similar to Web2, says Wei. When asked about how BNB Greenfield will tackle the challenges in the current decentralized storage network landscape, she replied, BNB Greenfield can minimize the speed taken to compile encrypted data from different providers. We can also offer ownership to data which can then be commercialized, unlike other blockchains.

Wei also spoke about some industries that could benefit from this technology such as personal cloud storage, web hosting, and content creators. Further in the interview, she announced that their Zero2Hero Hackathon had launched on April 17 and would last until May 14. This hackathon is a technology bootcamp that is aimed at aiding individuals who wish to join Web3 but do not have the technical skills required.

Wei states that this four to five week long bootcamp offers more than 20 workshops across seven tracks. The participant will be able to find project partners from across the world and then bring their ideas to life.

It does not stop there, Wei adds; if the projects are valid then the winners will be moved to an incubation round which is incentivized by both their web2 and web3 partners. BNB Greenfield has partnered with AWS, Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Cloud, Tencent, Channelling, Acceler, UniSwap, Pancake, and more for the same.

How ‘The Rings of Power’ Is Fueling New Cloud-Based … – TV Technology

LAS VEGASAmazon Studios The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is widely known as perhaps the most expensive and lavishly produced series in the history of television and streaming media. But a NAB Show session, A Case Study: Color and Finishing in the Cloud, also highlighted how the programs pioneering cloud-based collaboration tools promise to revolutionize production processes in years ahead for many other series, large and small.

During the session, Jesse Kobayashi, co-founder of The Modern Film Consortium and VFX producer on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, discussed how Blackmagic Design, Company 3 and Amazon Web Services (AWS) collaborated to create an entirely cloud-based infrastructure for conform, color-grading and to deliver the show.

This technology has done something thats important, Kobayashi said. Its democratized storytelling. Whats so amazing about being here at NAB Show and speaking to you about our experiences in creating The Rings of Power is that when you walk the floor, you now see these tools available to all of us and to shows of all sizes. That is really exciting.

While the results of these technologies can now be applied to productions large and small, which are being exhibited by vendors like Blackmagic Design and AWS, much of the original development work for the cloud-based production tools was designed to handle a production of mind-boggling scale and complexity.

We had 186 hours of 4K camera dailies, Kobayashi said. We tracked over 9,164 visual effects shots. And we delivered more than 480 minutes of blockbuster action to Amazon Studios from a production that involved 12 global VFX vendors spanning three continents around the world.

We knew we needed a modern solution in order to deliver a show like this, he said. Working with the team at Amazon, they knew the answer for this was going to be leveraging the cloud in a way to bring together this global workforce in an efficient way.

To do that, they set up a Pixstor storage solution in Auckland, New Zealand, and had 100-Gbps connections between two studios in Auckland. These were connected to AWS cloud storage in Sydney, Australia. Finally, they created a pioneering camera in the cloud system to deliver footage securely to AWS by working with Rebel Fleet in New Zealand.

This gave us the flexibility, the automation and the protection that we needed to feel safe that our most important asset or camera negative was being stored securely, he said.

To develop a system so all the creatives around the world could collaborate, they turned to Blackmagic Design already an integral part of the production, supplying equipment and software and the post-production firm Company 3.

Blackmagic Design worked closely with Company 3s dedicated engineering team to facilitate the creation of what would be essentially a post-production studio in the cloud, with color-precise High Dynamic Range (HDR) monitoring synced live at each location. Based on AWS architecture, the solution allows media to be manipulated and conformed in the cloud as if all involved were in the same location, using local storage to hold the media.

Looking ahead, Kobayashi is already working on some new projects using these tools. But companies need to pay attention to a number of new requirements if they want to take full advantage of them, he stressed.

Understanding the importance of interconnectivity and having the right people when it comes to IT staff, asset management and storage, is crucial, Kobayashi said. Those things need to be as much of a standard part of production as having trucks and food on the set.

Google Uncovers APT41’s Use of Open Source GC2 Tool to Target … – The Hacker News

A Chinese nation-state group targeted an unnamed Taiwanese media organization to deliver an open source red teaming tool known as Google Command and Control (GC2) amid broader abuse of Google's infrastructure for malicious ends.

The tech giant's Threat Analysis Group (TAG) attributed the campaign to a threat actor it tracks under the geological and geographical-themed moniker HOODOO, which is also known by the names APT41, Barium, Bronze Atlas, Wicked Panda, and Winnti.

The starting point of the attack is a phishing email that contains links to a password-protected file hosted on Google Drive, which, in turn, incorporates the Go-based GC2 tool to read commands from Google Sheets and exfiltrate data using the cloud storage service.

"After installation on the victim machine, the malware queries Google Sheets to obtain attacker commands," Google's cloud division said in its sixth Threat Horizons Report. "In addition to exfiltration via Drive, GC2 enables the attacker to download additional files from Drive onto the victim system."

Google said the threat actor previously utilized the same malware in July 2022 to target an Italian job search website.

The development is notable for two reasons: First, it suggests that Chinese threat groups are increasingly relying on publicly available tooling like Cobalt Strike and GC2 to confuse attribution efforts.

Secondly, it also points to the growing adoption of malware and tools written in the Go programming language, owing to its cross-platform compatibility and its modular nature.

Google further cautioned that the "undeniable value of cloud services" have made them a lucrative target for cybercriminals and government-backed actors alike, "either as hosts for malware or providing the infrastructure for command-and-control (C2)."

A case in point is the use of Google Drive for storing malware such as Ursnif (aka Gozi or ISFB) and DICELOADER (aka Lizar or Tirion) in the form of ZIP archive files as part of disparate phishing campaigns.

"The most common vector used to compromise any network, including cloud instances is to take over an account's credentials directly: either because there is no password, as with some default configurations, or because a credential has been leaked or recycled or is generally so weak as to be guessable," Google Cloud's Christopher Porter said.

The findings come three months after Google Cloud detailed APT10's (aka Bronze Riverside, Cicada, Potassium, or Stone Panda) targeting of cloud infrastructure and VPN technologies to breach enterprise environments and exfiltrate data of interest.

Other features of the new WordPress version include the automation of single WordPress instances to multi-region WordPress clusters with CDN configurations.

Virtuozzo also claims that with the update, customers are only charged for the resources they actually consume, in comparison to some shared hosting and cloud hosting services that charge for reserved instances and resources.

A single data center can consume the equivalent electricity of 50,000 homes. At 200 terawatt hours (TWh) annually, data centers collectively use more energy than some nation-states. And the cost of those duplicate pictures cluttering up your camera roll? 355,000 tonnes of CO2 every year according to The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

However, Gonzalez notes that not everything we do digitally has the same metabolic weight. Things like artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency miningthose activities are computationally very intensive so they use something like quadruple the amount of electricity than normal kinds of computing or basic storage he said.

Gonzalez also encourages a holistic approach to the growing issue of data storage. There are additional ecological factors and that is water-based cooling for these IT systems, he said, adding that data centers use billions of gallons of water a day to keep cool. The use of these water resources is in direct competition with local farmers.

Then there is the issue of electronic waste. These data centers have finite life spans of about two to three years, said Gonzalez. Youre also cycling through a lot of computing equipment which is made out of rare metals like cobalt, vanadium, and lithiumand the mining conditions in which theyre produced are absolutely horrific from a human rights standpoint.

With that in mind, will clearing out your digital clutter make a difference? Gonzalez maintained that the larger issues of data storage are structural and regulatory. I think most of the onus is on them because it is possible to have a cloud that is more metabolically sustainable for our planet. I just think there hasnt been that huge concerted regulatory push at the UN level and at the level of governments, to enforce these kinds of climate standards, he said.

Its so easy to think of the cloud as this global singular thing, Gonzalez added. And it is this kind of diffuse thing that makes it hard to pinpoint where it starts and where it ends. But its also very local. There is a data center somewhere where you live probably, you might just not know its there.

For Mel, starting again with a new phone free from the digital clutter made her feel like a new person. Recognizing her digital hoarding has also allowed Mel to connect and empathize with her father who has hoarded throughout his life. A lot of people will think that [physical] hoarding is crazy, she said. And then they sit down on their phones and realise Oh, wow, Im a hoarder as well.
